2017 Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series Single Cab-Chassis Review

aftermarket cruise control landcruiser 79 series

2017 Toyota 79 Series LandCruiser Road Test

With the demise of the Y61 Patrol, the 70 Series range is the only semi-affordable, properly heavy-duty 4X4 available in Australia.

Perhaps the first myth to dispel here is the idea that the average dual-cab 4X4 is ‘heavy-duty’ – they’re not. Sure, they all come with stupendous tow ratings, but that’s more a measure of the manufacturer’s optimism, than any accurate measure of robustness.

And yes, the recently released ‘down-under’, Mercedes-Benz G-Class Professional is – on the spec sheet at least – similar to a GLX 79 Series cab-chassis, but have you seen the price? One hundred and twenty gorillas (!) guarantees the very sexy G-Pro a limited audience, leaving the 70 Series LandCruiser with the heavy duty 4X4 market all to itself.

TOYOTA LAUNCHED AN UPDATED 70 SERIES RANGE IN OCTOBER 2016 WITH UPGRADES TO IMPROVE SAFETY, EFFICIENCY AND COMFORT.

You can read our article on the 2017 70 Series LandCruiser updates and pricing here .

The Toyota 70 Series range includes the 76 Series wagon, 78 Series Troop Carrier and the 79 Series single and double-cab cab-chassis variants.

Toyota admirably made the decision to make the updated 2017 70 Series range safer by adding a full electronic safety package that includes vehicle stability control (VSC), active traction control (A-TRC), hill-start assist control (HAC), brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution in addition to the existing anti-skid brakes.

70 Series whisperers will note the bulky new bonnet. It’s muscled up to improve pedestrian safety by creating a larger gap between the bonnet and the top of the engine.

In what has proven to be a controversial move – mostly controversial with people who’d never buy one – Toyota also made the decision to chase a 5-Star ANCAP rating for the single cab-chassis only. The logic being that the single cab-chassis is the bread and butter model purchased by commercial buyers and they for the most part are losing interest in any vehicle that isn’t 5-Star safety rated.

Achieving the 5-Star rating for the single cab-chassis required significant re-engineering that includes a thicker, stronger and more rigid frame with an additional cross-member, and importantly three additional airbags; one for the driver’s knees and two side curtain airbags.

Safety aside, the entire 70 Series range is now running a Euro-5 compliant upgraded version of Toyota’s 1VD-FTV 4.5-litre V8 single-turbo diesel; including piezo-electric injectors and a diesel particulate filter. Outputs remain unchanged at 151kW and a very lazy 430Nm of torque. Notably the diesel particulate filter can be left to its own devices on auto regen or manually switched to burn mode.

The old style two-piece steel rims that were fitted to the base-spec Workmate and the GXL Troop Carrier have been turfed and replaced with wider single piece steel rims and tubeless tyres.

The other big news is a taller second and fifth gear, auto-locking front hubs with a manual option and cruise control is now standard across the range!

What’s that? You want to know if the rear track has been widened? No, sadly it hasn’t – which didn’t bother us during our testing in a sand quarry – but we have heard reports from rural users who reckon it can make life a bit interesting on rutted tracks.

In base-spec Workmate trim, the 79’s wheels are 16” steelies, the floor and seating are vinyl, the windows have manual winders, you use the key to open the door and start it, the intermittent wipers aren’t adjustable and the door mirrors are mounted on a bent piece of steel (otherwise known as a bracket) and require manual adjustment. None of which I have a problem with and, in many ways, prefer… but it kept me thinking about that $65,251 (including air-conditioning) plus on-roads price tag.

In mid-spec GX trim (as tested), the stakes are raised with the addition of 16” alloy wheels and a digital clock. The price (including air-conditioning) jumps to $67,251 plus on-roads.

The top-spec GXL is a $2,000 premium over the GX and adds a pair of diff-locks, carpet, cloth trim, central locking, power windows (front only), first row door pockets, a chrome grille and a power antenna. The diff-locks alone are a $1,500 option on the GX (which is an absolute steal) making the GXL the bargain buy, if you don’t mind getting mud on ya carpet.

(A full list of features follows below.)

2017 79 Series Land Cruiser single cab-chassis range recommended retail pricing (price includes GST but excludes on-road and dealer costs):

Workmate:  (man): $62,490 plus $2,761 for air-conditioning GX:  (man): $66,490 plus $2,761 for air-conditioning GXL:  (man): $68,490 plus $2,761 for air-conditioning

THE 70 SERIES LANDCRUISER ONLY EXISTS BECAUSE THERE IS DEMAND IN SOME COMMERCIAL SECTORS FOR A PROPERLY HEAVY DUTY 4X4.

It’s been designed and built to offer a narrow range of end-users a durable and effective working platform and that’s about it.

It hasn’t been built for grey nomads to tow 3.0-tonne vans around the country (although it could) and it hasn’t been built for the recreational off-roader (although it’ll impress them); it’s been built to work in mines, on farms and outback properties and it’s been built to last in those environments.

Up to about 90 km/h it all makes sense. It’ll tow anything you hook up to it, it’ll carry any load you stuff in the tray, and it will handle the constant punishing duty-cycle that mine work will put it through, longer than most.

But even with the revised 5 th gear ratio, the open road and national speed limits are not the 70’s sweet spot. It’ll do 110km/h relatively easily, but the increased noise levels and the kick in the pants the fuel consumption cops, combine with a general sense that it’d rather jog than run. Drop back to 100km/h or a touch less and all is well again.

Where it excels is in it’s flexibility at low to moderate speeds. That 4.5-litre V8 is nearly as lazy as I am, and only manages to produce 430Nm, but it’s geared to make the most of it, and it feels bloody strong. The gearbox has a wonderful mechanical feel to its operation, which makes changing gears a pleasure, but you can keep the changes to a minimum if you choose to – highway touring for example doesn’t involve gear changes through 60 km/h town zones, you can glide through those in 5 th and drop the hammer on the other side without issue.

The stock factory suspension is surprisingly good; Toyota has the 70 Series riding better on the blacktop than the HiLux. There’s barely a hint of the fore-aft ‘jiggle’ you find with cart-sprung utes, and it soaks up bumps and broken bitumen very nicely.

It’s a live axle front-end with recirculating ball steering so yeah, it’s a little woolly on the dead-ahead and lacking in feel, but I personally don’t mind that – it’s more truck than car, and clipping those apexes just right isn’t a huge priority. The turning circle is a massive 14.4 metres, which means U-turns require plenty of forethought and three point turns are worth practicing.

Inside the cab, it’s basic but not uncomfortable. The new seats in the 79 are good things, the steering is tilt and reach adjustable, the air-conditioning is icy cold and the sound system is gloriously simple. The only thing it’s ‘connected’ to is a good old fashioned telescopic aerial (they work seriously well) and a nice tune is just a button push away – it’ll even play a CD for you if you ask nicely. It’s all a case of function over form, something that used to be the norm with 4X4s.

David Wilson piloted the 79 around his Adventure 4WD test track in the Barossa Valley, and I’ll leave it to David to go into detail on its performance in that environment, suffice to say (and this surprised me given its on-road ride) it wasn’t quite as nice to ride in as the SR5 HiLux in the slow going rough stuff.

The now standard traction-control looks to be very well tuned for low-range work, and the optional diff locks (that’s plural) are still the best traction aids money can buy; have I mentioned that they are a super cheap option on the GX at $1,500. Aftermarket lockers would cost double that and then some.

I tested the 79 up around the Riverland in South Australia and on corrugated dirt roads it’s a class act. I also know that off-road in Alpine country, they are one of the better riding 4X4s on that undulating rocky ground, the sort of terrain that can get some not-so-well set-up IFS utes all out-of-sorts.

Rounding out the test was a 300km drive from the Riverland to Adelaide with around two-tonne of speed boat in tow. It behaved true to form and up to about 90km/h you wouldn’t know there was a boat following you. It would sit on 110km/h with the cruise control on no worries, but you could almost see the fuel gauge moving. Sitting on the limit comes with a sense that you were just being a little bit irresponsible.

A good compromise was 100km/h and Accommodation Hill – just North of Truro – was an ideal way to test the 79’s resolve at that speed. It’s a long, hard, grinding hill that knocks the stuffing out of plenty of tow-barges and as I suspected, the 79 was no exception. The cruise control very quickly lost control of the situation as fourth gear became a requirement and once selected, we sailed up relatively unruffled at, you guessed it, 90 km/h.

You don’t get a fuel economy readout in a 70 Series, so plucking that number from the dash and presenting it here as fact isn’t possible. According to the fuel gauge it used just over half of its 130-litre fuel tank in half a day, that included pick-up in Adelaide, a drive to the Adventure 4WD test track in the Barossa, a couple of hours of low-range work and then a (mostly) 110km/h trip through to Berri in the Riverland. All up a total of around 350kms.

The trip back from Berri with the boat in tow was 260km and saw another half a tank (per the gauge) used, sitting on 100km/h for the most part.

There are too many variables in this less than scientific approach (yes, we should have topped the tank off shortly after pick-up and filled it just prior to return) to put a number on it, but I’d eat my ARB cap if it was anywhere near the claimed 10.7 L/100 combined cycle figure.

‘Thirsty’ feels like an appropriate adjective and as I’ve said a few times now, this is one bus that gives you it’s best, up to but not much over 90km/h.

If we’re going to be realistic about this, our opinion isn’t going to matter diddly squat to any of Toyota’s commercial clients. The miner, the cocky and the outback property owner will buy the 79 (or 76 or 78) because it’s the only 4X4 platform out there that is geared to work hard and durable enough to last in extreme environments. The only choice they have to make, is whether to go with white or silver. They’ll say the price is right because it’ll last twice as long as lesser 4X4s that aren’t – truth be told – all that far away in price anymore anyway.

For the rest of us ‘recreational off-roaders’ the 70 Series range is a compromise. The gearing is still too short, and as David said soon after taking the wheel, “I wish they’d put a 6-speed in it!” A 6-speed with a higher overdrive that allowed comfortable and efficient cruising at highway speeds would make all the difference, and cut down on in-cab noise, which jumps noticeably in volume once you get up to 100km/h.

Equipment levels are best described as sparse and it challenges you to see the value in that circa $70,000 on-road pricing.

As far as safety is concerned, it’s a mile ahead of the pre-update models, but the double-cab, wagon and troopy are untested by ANCAP and will never (in their current form) achieve a 5-star rating like the single cab-chassis. And that’s a fact that gets up some people’s noses.

In-spite of the shortcomings, I can honestly see the appeal. It’s quite possibly one of the last modern vehicles with a modicum of character; it’s fun to drive, built like a Panzer tank and it would make a surprisingly comfortable and durable tourer.

In the right configuration, say a 79 double-cab or a 76 wagon, it’s possibly the best 4X4 touring platform this side of an Iveco Daily and imminently more useable.

If you buy one and want to make the most of the experience, remember that this old girl doesn’t like to be rushed. Set the cruise somewhere between 90 and 100km/h and smell the roses.

The new Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series is a modern-ish update of the immensely popular ute workhorse because you can choose one with a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

Don’t worry, the 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 and five-speed manual gearbox combination is still available across the range* but the introduction of a four-cylinder into the line-up is the big news.

* Except in the Troopie which is only available with the four-cylinder engine and six-speed auto.

So, what’s all the fuss about? Well, the four-cylinder engine yields more torque and better fuel efficiency than the V8, and overall the new 79 Series package is supposedly more refined and comfortable with more driver-assist safety tech than the previous generation.

So, is the new four-cylinder 79 better than the V8-powered version?

Based on new car retail price

Price and features – Does it represent good value for the price? What features does it come with? 7/10

The 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series single cab chassis in WorkMate spec has a recommended retail price of $76,800, but that doesn’t include on-road costs or the cost of the tray.

Standard features include a 6.7-inch multimedia touchscreen system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto , Bluetooth , cruise control, a raised air intake (aka snorkel), 130L fuel tank and 16-inch steel wheels.

Extras onboard this test vehicle include a galvanised general purpose steel tray ($4352.80, fitted), a towbar (3500kg, Single Cab Chassis - $728.05, fitted), a seven-pin flat trailer wiring harness ($253.58, fitted), a tow ball ($37.51, fitted), and towbar hitch receiver plug ($17.04, fitted).

All of these additions push this 79’s price as tested to $82,188.98 (excluding on-road costs).

Standard features include cruise control. (Image: Glen Sullivan)

Diff locks are not included on the 79 Series at this spec level – but they are a $1500 option, so get them.

The 79 is available in a variety of colours - 'French Vanilla' (on the test vehicle), 'Silver Pearl', 'Graphite', 'Merlot Red', 'Sandy Taupe' and 'Midnight Blue'.

Design – Is there anything interesting about its design? 7/10

It’s still boxy and blocky, and straight up and down but the hard edges have been softened a tiny bit.

The front end has been redesigned – take a look at the accompanying photos and come up with your own hyperbolic description – and the interior has undergone a styling upgrade of sorts, along with benefiting from a redesigned instrument cluster and centre console plus a multi-information display.

The mismatched wheel track remains. When the V8 was brought into the line-up in 2007, the front axle track was stretched 80mm (in the base-spec Workmate) and 120mm (in the GX and GXL), so the frame could accommodate the V8 and its bigger radiator. Nothing’s changed – even though it’s a new, smaller engine in the engine bay.

Good news is that there’s a thriving space in Australia’s dynamic aftermarket industry for rear-track correction systems – that widen the track of the rear axle so it matches the front – and their fitment.

The interior seat trim is grey vinyl in fitting with the 79 Series’ utilitarian character.

Practicality – How practical is its space and tech inside? 7/10

There are few substantial changes in the cabin beyond those mentioned in the Design sectipon, i.e. redesigned instrument cluster and centre console plus a multi-information display.

The 70 Series LandCruiser’s interior is spartan – and that’s being kind. This is a bare-bones cab made for people who do hard work in tough places. However, it at least now has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and there are USB-A chargers, a 12V socket and cupholders.

The 70 Series LandCruiser’s interior is spartan. (Image: Glen Sullivan)

The seats have a wipe-clean vinyl covering, and there are plenty of durable plastic surfaces everywhere else.

There’s not a lot of storage space. In fact you’d be hard-pressed to find somewhere to put anything once you’ve emptied your pockets into the small receptacles in between the seats.

Toyota Landcruiser 79 Series Workmate I Tray

Notebooks, etc can go atop the dash while a small tool bag, some water bottles and a few other bits and pieces can slot behind the seats. But otherwise you don’t have many storage options inside the 79’s cab.

Under the bonnet – What are the key stats for its engine and transmission? 7/10

This 79 Series has a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, producing 150kW at 3400rpm (1.0kW less than the V8) and 500Nm at 1600-2800rpm (70Nm more than the V8).

For reference, in case you can’t work out the simple maths, the LC79 V8 produces 151kW at 3400rpm and 430Nm at 1200-3200rpm.

This 79 Series has a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, producing 150kW at 3400rpm. (Image: Glen Sullivan)

For the first time in a 79 Series, a six-speed automatic transmission is offered.

All LandCruiser 70 Series variants have part-time 4WD, a transfer case with high- and low-range gearing working off a stubby shifter to the right of the auto.

Driving – What's it like to drive? 7/10

This 79 is 5235mm long (with a 3180mm wheelbase), 1790mm wide and 1970mm high. It has a listed kerb weight of 2145kg, but your 79’s weight will depend on what tray and other accessories you have fitted.

As mentioned earlier, this test vehicle has a galvanised general purpose steel tray which tips the scales at 319kg.

The single-cab chassis has a listed turning circle of 14.4m.

If you’ve driven a 79 before, you should know what to expect, woeful steering, harsh bouncy ride, noise from the engine, the wing mirrors, etc.

If you don’t love the noise, the bouncing and the all-pervasive feeling that you’re driving a mini-bus then go get in something else because you don’t belong here.

But, on road, the new 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and six-speed auto do make the 79 Series driving experience a lot smoother, more refined than you’d experience in the V8, for better and worse.

Better because driving the V8-powered 79 is like steering a tractor around that has ruined suspension. It’s gruff and agricultural with lots of engine noise and is a real rough rider.

This 79 is 5235mm long (with a 3180mm wheelbase), 1790mm wide and 1970mm high.

Worse because those agricultural characteristics noted above are exactly why the V8-powered 79 is so much fun to drive. It’s a whole-body immersive experience.

Engine noise is still there, just not as pronounced, and where the V8 growls, the four-cylinder whines.

In fact, no matter how clever this transmission is – and it is – this engine and auto combination feels much better suited to the HiLux and HiAce from whence it came than it does here. It just doesn’t feel right in the 79.

Off-road, the 79 is just as capable as always, except this base-spec ute does not have any diff locks but they are an option, so get them.

Ground clearance is 330mm (unladen) and off-road angles of 35 degrees approach, 29-degree departure and a (guesstimated) 26° ramp-over. Official wading depth is 700mm.

The four-cylinder offers up a flat and fat torque curve, just like its V8 big bro, and that’s ideal for low-range 4WDing , but there’s an underlying whininess about the four-cylinder engine.

Visibility remains great, due to the 79’s straight up and down cabin with plenty of glass every which way.

Maximum trailer weights of 750kg (unbraked) and 3500kg (braked). (Image: Glen Sullivan)

Ride and handling on the blacktop, dirt tracks and during low-range 4WDing are better than what you might expect, if you know what previous-gen 79s are like.

As noted earlier, the LC79's wheel tracks remain mismatched: 1555mm at the front, 1460mm at the leaf-sprung rear axle. This irregularity can cause, at best, mild annoyance or, at worst, major annoyance when you’re driving at speed through deep wheel ruts as the rear tyres try to grind or plow their way through unbroken terrain.

For those who tow, rest easy, the 79 can still tow maximum trailer weights of 750kg (unbraked) and 3500kg (braked).

Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is 3510kg, Gross Combined Mass (GCM) is 7010kg, and payload is listed as 1000kg (depending on the tray).

Australia’s aftermarket industry is full to the brim with every accessory you can possibly think of for the 79, so go nuts.

Efficiency – What is its fuel consumption? What is its driving range? 7/10

Official fuel consumption for the 79 Series with the 2.8-litre four-cylinder engine is 9.6L/100km on a combined cycle.

Actual fuel consumption on this test, from pump to pump, was 11.4.L/100km, but I did a lot of low-range 4WDing.

The 79 has a 130-litre fuel tank, so, going by that fuel consumption figure, you could reasonably expect a driving range of about 1140km from a full tank.

Safety – What safety equipment is fitted? What is its safety rating? 7/10

The LC79 had the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating (as a result of testing in September 2016) but that rating expired in December 2023. It is now designated 'unrated'.

As standard, new-gen 79s have AEB , driver and front passenger airbags, curtain shield and driver’s knee airbags, lane-departure alert , traffic sign recognition, auto high-beam LED headlights, off-road hill descent control and 'Hill-start Assist Control'.

Ownership – What warranty is offered? What are its service intervals? What are its running costs? 7/10

All LC70 series have a five-year/unlimited km warranty and capped price servicing is available.

Service intervals are scheduled for every six months or 10,000km whichever occurs soonest. That's more frequent than others in the market but Toyota says it's required for a vehicle often used in arduous circumstances.

Capped-price servicing applies for the first five scheduled services at $525 per visit. That means $1050 per year or $5250 over five years.

Allianz

The 79 Series with a 2.8L four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and six-speed automatic transmission offers more torque and better fuel economy than its V8 stablemate, so it makes a lot of sense.

But, outside of a mine site, farm or other remote-area work, the 79 Series doesn’t make a lot of sense at all. Which is why I reckon if you’re going to get a 79, go the whole hog, and get the V8.

Sure, logic dictates you should opt for better performance and fuel consumption, but since when has buying a 79 Series been logical?

Now you just have to join the long queue…

Dry weather gravel roads and formed trails with no obstacles, very shallow water crossings.

Hard-packed sand, slight to medium hills with minor obstacles in all weather.

This doesnt mean you can't fit one of these shifters in your own time down the track. But we have decided that for vehicles driven frequently its simply not the right option. The race shifter is great for rowing gears, but no so great for shunting in a car park.

DIY kits are not available, this must be installed by us or one of our installers. We currently have installers located, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Mackay, Newcastle, Melbourne and Perth. Please use the contact form if you would like to contact an installer in a specific area.

The base kit is supplied with the items listed below also as per this video - Youtube Link

There are now 4 optional extras for you too choose from. Which you can add to the cart with this base kit.

Optional Extra 1: The centre console. We currently have a reinforced version of the Pittman 4x4 console available. This is not the same as thier other consoles it has been made to our specification with a stronger section around the shifter to ensure strength where its needed. We have options for different chassis. Link to the console here - Automatic Console Options   WE CAN NOT MODIFY YOUR EXISITING CONSOLE, SO IF NOT ORDERING ONE, PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CONSOLE WILL BE READY FOR A 8SPEED GEAR SHIFTER

      Option

al Extra 2: Cruise Control. Vehicles fitted with factory cruise control will require an aftermarket cruise control module. This is to bypass the factory ECU's clutch slip detection. However, if you have an earlier model vehicle with out cruise control you can also option the cruise control to be supplied with your 8speed kit. Link here - Cruise Control Modules

al Extra 3: New modified transfer case gear. As explained in the above video, a cruical part of being able to maintain the factory rear tail shaft length and not need to shorten it, is getting the transfer case as close to the 8 speed transmission as possible, one part of us being able to do that is modifying the inlet on the transfer case input gear. Kits fitted by us do not require this option as we will modify your existing gear. However if you are fitting the kit yourself or even getting a shop to do it, this means it can be done with out needing to visit a machine shop. YOU WILL LIKELY NEED THIS IF WE ARE NOT FITTING THE KIT. - New Transfer Case Gear

al Extra 4: Transmission Upgrade. The base kit is supplied with a Reconditioned 8HP transmission with a 12 Month warranty. For high power applications above 1000nm engine torque ratings, please look at the upgrade option - Transmission Upgrade Options

This kit includes the following: BMW ZF 8hp70X - Reconditioned

This kit is designed to be fitted to a standard vehicle so modifications to certain parts of the kit may be required when fitting to a modified vehicle.

While we do our best to make the kit suits all modifcations or work around modifications as best we can, some long range tanks do have clearance issues with the transfer case and tail shaft and we do not recomend centrally positioned long range tanks to be used with this kit. If you have a long range tank it may require custom brackets to allow a few mm extra clearance, this is not something we can help with.

  • GR86 Sports Coupe Celebrates 40 Years Since AE86 Launch with a Special TRUENO Edition
  • AE86-Inspired Two-Tone Black Hood and Side Panel Graphic Paired with Halo or Track bRed
  • Upgraded Performance Package with SACHS® Dampers and Brembo ® Brakes
  • Performance Package Now Available for GR86 Models Equipped with 18-inch Wheels

PLANO, Texas (June 21, 2023) – Toyota is bringing a double dose of pure driving delight to the GR86 for the 2024 model year. First up is a limited GR86 TRUENO Edition with a throwback two tone look that will come in a choice of Halo and black or Track bRed and black. Next, a newly available Performance Package with SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes comes as standard equipment on the TRUENO Edition and will be available as an upgrade package for GR86 models.

Built on the Premium grade, the GR86 TRUENO Edition will be available in both manual and automatic transmission models with only 860 units to be produced for the US market, a number plate on the driver’s side dash will mark its rarity. A black wrapped hood, black TRUENO Edition side panel graphic, and black painted duckbill spoiler paired to either Halo or Track bRed will give the model its two-tone look. In a tribute to the 1980’s model that inspired its design, it will wear a TRUENO Edition badge on the front bumper lip and rear decklid. Additional accents will include black metallic finished 18-inch, 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels that are unique to the TRUENO Edition, along with black door handles and mirror caps.

Inside the special edition, Ultrasuede® sport seats are trimmed with attention grabbing red leather and complemented by a red-stitched shift boot and leather-wrapped steering wheel. A TRUENO Edition logoed shift knob and all-weather floor/trunk mats also add a unique touch to the driver-focused cockpit. An 8-inch touchscreen display that includes Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility and premium eight speaker audio system for an immersive driving experience, come standard.

Model year 2024 also brings suspension and braking upgrades with a GR86 Performance Package. Consisting of ZF SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes, this new Performance Package will be standard on the TRUENO Edition. The Performance Package will be an option that customers can add to for new 2024 GR86 models and available as a retrofit for any GR86 from the 2022 or 2023 model years (18-inch wheels required). The package is specially tuned by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing for the GR86, with the aim of maximizing handling, ride comfort, and brake system consistency.

A new addition for manual transmission equipped models is an Active Safety Suite. The system uses a stereo camera to monitor the road ahead and includes features like Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert and High Beam Assist. This system was previously available on automatic transmission equipped models. The addition of active safety adds to Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and more.

The 2024 Toyota GR86 TRUENO Edition will be available in limited quantities this coming Winter. The Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price for the GR86 TRUENO Edition and complete GR86 2024 lineup will be shared later this year.

The Thunderclap is Back

With its pop-up halogen headlights, angular hood, and liftback styling, the 1984-1987 Corolla Sport GT-S liftback, or Sprinter Trueno as it was known in Japan, brought sporty performance to the fifth generation Corolla line in the U.S. With it, Toyota brought a unique model to the hot hatch category.

Also referred to as the AE86, which was the chassis code for the 1980’s era model, it was powered by a 1.6-liter twin cam 16-valve engine with a rev-happy redline of 7500 rpms. Its low curb weight of around 2,300 pounds and rear wheel drive powertrain and factory limited slip differential, paired with a suspension that was a combination of MacPherson struts and 4-link coil springs with a lateral rod, made it a favorite of drivers who liked to tame the corners.

aftermarket cruise control landcruiser 79 series

The combination of a snappy 5-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel-drive platform, balanced front-to-rear weight proportion, and tunability made the AE86 popular among rally, circuit and touring racers. The fact that the liftback design could carry four mounted wheels and tires made it a favorite among weekend racers too.

The model became especially popular for use in drift racing. The weight and power proportions were a perfect fit for the style of driving that took corners with controlled oversteer. Notably, it became the model of choice for Japanese “Drift King” Keiichi Tsuchiya and other top Japanese drift racers, who cemented the model’s reputation in the motorsport. The AE86’s popularity also crossed over into popular culture in the 1990’s, as an AE86 Trueno GT-APEX Liftback with black rockers and hood known as the “panda” gained Anime fame as it twisted its way down fictional mountain roads.

For 2024, the heritage of the AE86 marks its return with the GR86 TRUENO Edition. Its design elements on the exterior and interior are a modern interpretation of the 1980’s model. As for performance, the GR86 is recognized by many enthusiasts as Toyota’s spiritual successor to the AE86. With a lightweight, RWD platform, and the TRUENO Edition’s upgraded suspension damper and brake system, it is a driver’s car engineered with a priority on handling and balanced power delivery, ready for the twists and turns ahead.

Performance Level-Up Acquired

For 2024, the GR86 amplifies its handling qualities with the addition of an optional performance package consisting of ZF SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes. This damper and brake package will be standard on the 2024 TRUENO Edition and can be added as a dealer installed option for any new 2024 GR86 lease or purchase, or any GR86 back to model year 2022, with 18-inch wheels.

The SACHS Dampers are filled with high pressure nitrogen and oil and are designed to absorb vibrations across a wide range of speeds, maximize ground contact, and support firm, stable steering, while also balancing road feedback and ride comfort. The red-painted Brembo 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers clamp down on smooth surfaced 12.8 x 1.3-in front rotors, with 12.4 x .79-in. rotors in the rear. The brake pad area is 11.6-in 2 in the front and 4.9-in 2 in the rear.

The upgraded dampers and brakes complement the GR86’s chassis well, which is already known for its taut, responsive feel. Crafted from a combination of high-strength steel, hot-stamped steel, and aluminum, each material in the frame is strategically placed to bring drivers a balance of roll and pitch that maximizes control. Up front it uses diagonal cross members and high strength fasteners to join the front suspension and frame together. At the rear, a full ring structure and high-strength fasteners connect the frame and suspension mounts. For additional reinforcement, structural adhesive throughout the underbody. Altogether creating a taut, connected frame.

Minimal Weight, Maximum Fun

All GR86 models pack in modern engineering, tech, and convenience – while sticking to its lightweight sports car roots.

Weighing in at just 2,811 pounds for the manual transmission equipped Base grade model, and at 2,851 pounds for automatic version, the GR86 is among the lightest sports cars on the market. An aluminum hood, front fenders and roof panel help keep the weight down on the body. While details such as the use of structural adhesives in the frame and seats that are over six pounds lighter than the prior generation 86, help save precious ounces in the name of maximum control.

The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter FA-24 engine delivers 228 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque and is tuned so that peak torque arrives at 3,700 RPM, resulting in a responsive and powerful driving experience in all situations. Zero-to-60 acceleration comes in at 6.1 seconds for the 6-speed manual transmission, and 6.6 seconds for the available six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT-i). With either transmission, the GR86 comes equipped with a Torsen® limited-slip rear differential for enhanced traction while cornering.

Sports car purists will love GR86’s 6-speed manual transmission. With the push of a button, drivers can engage Track mode or switch off Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). Additional clutch discs and a new high-capacity torque converter allow for smooth delivery of the 2.4-liter engine’s higher power and torque.

On the inside of GR86, drivers will experience a low-slung, driver-focused cockpit with digital instrument panel, push-button start, HVAC system with LED dials and piano-key switches, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls for the audio system. For the 6-speed automatic, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters offer enthusiasts a dynamic driving experience. Drivers can choose between Normal, Sport or Snow modes. When in Sport mode, the transmission senses brake and accelerator operation and vehicle behavior to automatically select the optimal gear, bringing drivers the control they want.

An 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system with a six-speaker audio system comes standard on the Base grade and an eight-speaker system is standard on the TRUENO Edition and Premium grade. For seating, the Premium grade comes with Ultrasuede® and leather-trimmed, six-way adjustable black and silver accented front seats with two-level heating. The Base grade has six-way adjustable black G-embossed fabric with sport fabric side bolsters. Rear seats are covered with Ultrasuede on the Premium and sport fabric on the Base grade.

GR86 Safety & Connected Services

All Toyota GR86 models come standard with an Active Safety Suite. On Automatic Transmission models this suite includes Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Sway Warning and Automatic High Beams. Manual Transmission models include Pre-Collision Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, and Rear Sonar Warning. An anti-theft system with engine immobilizer and alarm are also standard.

Toyota’s Star Safety System™ also comes standard on all models, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). It also includes Smart Stop Technology® (SST), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Track Mode and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC). Additional safety features include LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) with lower anchors on outboard rear seats and tether anchors on all rear seats and a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). Seven airbags are standard on all models, including a driver’s knee airbag.
