Woman dancing in colourful red and yellow costumes, with headdresses at the Rio carnival in Brazil

Everything in Brazil is bigger, brighter and bolder – from the waterfalls and jungles to the street parties and beaches. It’s no wonder there’s always a festival.

Brazilians are famous for their zest for life. The country is loaded with incredible natural attractions – the Amazon, roaring Iguazu Falls and jungle-clad mountains where you feel on top of the world (much like Christ the Redeemer). And let’s not forget Brazil’s infectious music – from samba and bossa nova to Afro-Brazilian beats – and a party to be had around every corner. And of course the pumping beaches, where you can play football until the sun dips low behind Corcovado.   Brazil   is your cue to pick up a caipirinha and join the fun.

Best time to visit brazil.

In most parts of Brazil, temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, regardless of the season. The summer months between December and February can be hot and humid, bringing temperatures to the high 30s – perfect weather to enjoy Brazil’s famous beaches. It’s also festival season, so it’s well worth visiting during this time.

Rainfall varies greatly around Brazil so depending on where you’re traveling, you could experience some rain. Around the Pantanal, Manaus and the Amazon basin, expect patches of rain all year round. Rio and the areas around Foz de Iguacu don’t have distinct rainy seasons and are typically drier than some other areas of Brazil.

The south of Brazil experiences extreme seasonal changes, so pack accordingly.

Culture and customs

Brazilians are universally known for their infectious enthusiasm and lust for life. The wild celebratory atmosphere of Carnaval isn’t a one-off —impromptu street parties, heaving nightclubs and busy dance halls all display the same vibrant energy and passion all year round. Travelers will find that music, dance and good times are all passionately pursued by most Brazilians, regardless of income, gender or age. But it doesn’t stop there. Fun is not limited to the dynamic bars and clubs of the big cities - the natural world is also enjoyed by most Brazilians. With so many spectacular beaches, national parks, mountains and forests, there are plenty of places for Brazilians to enjoy their favorite past times – football, surfing, swimming, hiking, volleyball and capoeira (a Brazilian blend of martial arts and dance). Brazilians are also known for being one of the most open, friendly and affectionate nationalities – personal space isn’t regarded as highly in Brazil as in most other countries, so expect to be hugged and kissed by new and old friends when traveling here.

In contrast to the exuberant, modern life that Brazil's city dwellers live, are the humble, traditional ways of the indigenous tribes that live in the Amazon and surrounds. Despite modern advances, many still live off the land – hunting for wild animals and gathering fruit and berries - although sadly this is rapidly changing due to deforestation and urbanization. In the face of this, many tribes still cling to their ancient culture through traditional clothing, dance and song.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Brazil’s major cities feature a wide range of international cuisine, so it’s possible to eat a western-style breakfast, Mexican for lunch and Italian for dinner, with a few traditional Brazilian snacks in between. For an in-depth look at what you can eat in Brazil, visit our   South American food guide .

Things to try in Brazil

1. Churrasco

This traditional Brazilian barbecue is a true pleasure for meat eaters. Beef, pork, chicken, duck, lamb and fish are all skewered and cooked to perfection over hot coals, creating a smoky flavor and tender texture.

Brazil’s coastline is home to a bounty of marine life so when on the coast, be sure to eat seafood while it’s at its freshest. Fried baby octopus, king prawns and fragrant, seafood stew are great options.

3. Feijoada

This stew of beans and beef is Brazil’s national dish, and reflects its rich immigrant history. The flavors and style are a mix of African, Indian and Portuguese food traditions, making it a direct culinary link to Brazil’s past.

4. Caipirinha

This refreshing cocktail made from cachaca (a spirit derived from sugar cane), sugar, crushed ice and lime is the Brazilian national drink, and the perfect accompaniment to a beachside sunset.

Brazil has plenty of tropical fruits and berries – so for a quick snack, head to the markets and buy fresh bananas, limes, oranges, guava, jackfruit and acai berries.

Geography and environment

Being the fifth largest country in the world, Brazil shares land borders with many other countries including   Venezuela , Guyana,   Colombia ,   Peru ,   Bolivia , Paraguay,   Argentina , Uruguay, Suriname and French Guiana. Home to many different landscapes and ecosystems, Brazil’s natural environment is one of the most famous in the world. From the steamy tropical rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River and the swirling torrents of white water at Iguazu Falls, to the stunning beaches, reefs and islands of the coast, Brazil is certainly blessed with the very best of Mother Nature. Home to many of the world's most rare and endangered species, travelers will be able to see the full spectrum of colorful bird life, curious mammals, gigantic snakes and unique marine life.

With such a large population, Brazil’s major cities are busy, crowded and chaotic. It can take some getting used to, but once you’re working with the flow of the Brazilian way of life, you’ll begin to enjoy the pace. With a widening gap between the rich and the poor, housing can vary from large mansions in upscale neighborhoods and modern apartments right in the heart of the city, to humble tin sheds in the sprawling favelas. In some ways, Brazil’s major cities are full of contrasts but the universal appeal of partying, dancing and drinking seems to cross all cultural and social barriers.

History and government

Early history.

Indigenous tribes inhabited Brazil for centuries before the arrival of the first European settlers from Portugal in the 1500s. Colonization brought agriculture and crop growing to Brazil, resulting in extensive land clearing which dispossessed much of the indigenous population. The growing of sugar cane resulted in an influx of new residents, mainly slaves who brought rich African traditions with them. Remnants of this can still be seen in much of today’s music, dance and food. By the 19th century, coffee had taken the place of sugar as Brazil’s most valuable crop. The increase in coffee production brought a new wave of migrants to Brazil, mainly from Europe, and Brazil’s economy continued to flourish until the military coup of 1889.

Recent history

Brazil’s more recently history has also been characterized by wide spread immigration – especially during and after World War II - with large numbers of Jewish people choosing to flee persecution to live in Brazil, as well as significant numbers of people from the Middle East and other European countries.

In 1989, Brazil held its first democratic election in almost 30 years after decades of military rule. More recently, a stable government has resulted in increased economic prosperity, although many of Brazil’s residents are still impoverished, living well below the poverty line.

Top 10 beach spots of Brazil

1. praia do rosa.

The big surf and relaxed vibe of this hip holiday haven in Southern Brazil makes it a firm favorite with visitors and locals alike. Praia do Rosa manages to balance development with tradition - elegant small-scale hotels and eco-lodges provide the perfect place to rest after hiking, whale watching or surfing.

The cosmopolitan charms of this world-famous beach make it popular with people from all walks of life. Expect to see enthusiastic travelers, smug millionaires, bohemian artists and indifferent locals all enjoying Ipanema’s magnetic magic.

3. Jericoacoara

Far away from the showy extravagance of Rio lies this secluded spot only accessible by 4x4. Strictly protected from overdevelopment, the slow pace suits the windsurfers and kite surfers who prefer to get their thrills from the ocean's wild tides.

4. Lopes Mendes

This beach, located on the island of Ilha Grande, is considered one of Brazil’s best. The killer combination of fine white sand, great waves and clear, blue water guarantee perfect conditions for swimming, surfing and sun-worshipping.

5. Canoa Quebrada

This mellow hippie haven boasts stunning sand dunes and a deep blue-green sea. Horse riding on the dunes at sunset or cruising the coast on an old fishing boat are great ways to make the most of this picture perfect piece of Brazil.

Put on the world map by Bridget Bardot back in the 1960s, Buzios is the epitome of Brazilian sophistication. The designer boutiques, glam hotels and cool bars attract the celebrity jet set – but it’s the beautiful bays and beaches that are the true superstars of Buzios.

7. Copacabana

One of the world’s most famous urban beaches, Copacabana, is a top spot to indulge in a bit of people watching. Watch an eclectic mix of people play football, work on their tans and strut their stuff on this busy meeting spot that attracts all walks of life.

8. Praia da Mole

Soft white sand for lazing in the sun and a year-round supply of waves for surfing make this beach in Florianopolis a top pick. Paragliding, wakeboarding and other water sports provide more thrills, while the nearby bars and clubs ensure good times when the sun goes down.

9. Maragogi

Found on the Coral Coast of Brazil, Maragogi’s calm waters offer some respite from the big breaks found on many other Brazilian beaches. Colorful offshore reefs make snorkeling or scuba diving a must for visitors looking for aquatic adventures.

10. Tambaba

One for the free spirits of the world, Brazil’s only official nudist beach is flanked by steep, dramatic cliffs and dotted with swaying coconut palms. Choose to get cheeky and take advantage of lying on Brazil’s only sanctioned nudist beach in all your glory, or keep your kit on and stick to the “non-naturist” side.

Brazil’s two largest cities – Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – offer a wide range of shopping opportunities, from high-end designer shops to independent boutiques and everything in between. Every mid-sized city will have at least one ‘shopping’ (what Brazilians call their shopping malls), but as you move to more rural and remote areas, your best bet is the local market.

Shopping tips in Rio

Peddlers roam Rio’s beaches offering an enormous range of items including footballs, bathing suits and jewelry. Be aware that the price might be good but the quality likely isn’t. For better quality bikinis and swim trunks, consider heading to Blue Man, Brazil’s most successful beachwear label. Or visit Barra Shopping, one of the largest malls in South America, which boasts more than 570 stores, a movie theatre, a bowling alley and a range of restaurants and bars. Rio also hosts a number of popular markets including the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, where more than 700 vendors sell one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, leather shoes, paintings and gourmet goods each Sunday. Like many markets, bargaining is accepted.

Responsible travel tip

You may come across goods made from the skins of protected species (such as reptiles or wild cats). Keeping with Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, please refrain from supporting any business that exploit or abuse endangered animals.

Festivals and events in Brazil

Rio carnival.

Colorful, raucous and hedonistic, there’s a reason Rio’s Carnival is one of the best-known parties in the world. The parade of elaborate floats and colorful, bejeweled dancers in barely-there costumes dancing to samba may be the main event, but the revelry begins a whole month before. Each February in the lead up to Lent, the caipirinhas are free-flowing as clubs hold glitzy parties and bandas (street parties also called blocos) take over the streets.

Parintins Folklore Festival (Bumba-mei-boi)

An annual spectacle that commemorates a legend about a pregnant woman’s craving for bull tongue, the murder of a bull to satisfy said craving, and the bull’s magical resurrection. Two teams retell the myth and attempt to outdo each other using flamboyant song and dance routines, colorful costumes and giant floats. Spectators cheer and moo to performances at this three-day June celebration.

Festa Junina

This nationwide festival held each June celebrates saints John the Baptist, Anthony and Peter, but celebrations in the north-east take on a distinctly country flair. People flock to rural fairs wearing straw hats and plaid shirts to feast on corn and sweet treats, play games and dance the quadrilha (similar to a square dance).

Rio New Year’s Eve

Join two million revelers decked in white at Copacabana beach for a unique New Year’s celebration. Before the concerts and massive fireworks display begins, Candomble worshippers (an Afro-Brazilian religion) push boats filled with flowers and other offerings into the sea in exchange for safe sailing in the upcoming year.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Independence Day

Our Lady of Aparecida

All Soul's Day

Republic Day

Please note dates of Brazil's public holidays may vary.

Brazil Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Brazil, by far the largest country in  South America , encompasses one of the widest gulfs between raw nature and urbanity anywhere in the world. It's home to both bustling cosmopolitan cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo along the Atlantic coast and to indigenous tribal villages virtually untouched by outsiders in the Amazon Rainforest . There's the frontier city of Manaus along the Amazon and the heavily Afro-Brazilian culture of Bahia along the Atlantic adding further diversity.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

But even more than its places, Brazil is known for its fun-loving people, exemplified by the spirit of their annual Carnival celebrations, marked by samba dancing, skimpy and elaborate costumes and all-night revelries.

A Brief History of Brazil

One of the biggest misconceptions about Brazil is its official language. Unlike its Spanish-speaking neighbors, Brazil’s official language is Portuguese. The first European settlers arrived from Portugal in the 1500’s to harvest the profitable pau-brasil, the red wood, that gave the country its name.

Before European colonization, the territory of Brazil was inhabited by millions of indigenous peoples. Much of the indigenous population died of disease or fled from the coast. The Portuguese monarchy turned to the African slave trade in order to maximize the potential of gold, sugar, and diamond exports.

In 1888, Princess Isabel officially ended slavery. However, the melding of indigenous, European, and African ancestry can still be seen today in the people and culture of Brazil.

The Sights of Rio

Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Most travelers visiting Brazil start (or eventually make their way to) Rio de Janeiro , known for its iconic landmarks, gorgeous beaches, boisterous Carnaval celebrations, and as the host city of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. While in Rio, which fronts the Atlantic Ocean, it’s almost mandatory to spend some time on Copacabana or Ipanema beach.

These beaches are known for their beautiful views, relaxed atmosphere, and the beautiful people that visit the. Other must-sees include the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which occupies the highest point of the city and offers spectacular views of Sugarloaf Mountain and one of the world’s most beautiful harbors. Rio’s nightlife is also some of the best in the world.

Natural Wonders

The Amazon region, the largest tropical rainforest on earth, is centered in Brazil. Manaus, the capital of Amazonia, is the starting point for many of the river cruises on the Amazon River and its tributaries such as the Rio Negro, which flows into the Amazon just outside the city. Manaus is also known for its opulent 19th-century opera house, financed by the wealth of rubber barons and considered the finest outside Europe in its day.

Small-ship cruises usually make multiple stops per day for rainforest hikes, visits to remote villages, and dugout canoe rides through jungle creeks. Listen for howler monkeys in the trees and watch for pink dolphins in the rivers. You might also spot sloths and alligators.

Manaus, State of Amazonas, Brazil.

The Pantanal is an often overlooked but fascinating natural region. Lying south of the Amazon, it’s the world’s largest wetlands area and is a prime spot, many say the best in the Americas, for spotting wildlife such as jaguars, tropical birds, and giant otters. (The Pantanal lacks the thick foliage that often obscures Amazon wildlife viewing).

And in the far southeastern part of the country, on the border with Argentina , stands enormous Iguazu Falls , one of the most powerful cascades on earth. A mile and a half wide, it consists of 275 separate falls, producing often thunderous noises and towering mists.

Weather in Brazil

Brazil’s climate is as diverse as the country is large, with microclimates in the far north and along the eastern coast. However, Brazil’s climate can generally be described in three main categories: equatorial, tropical, and temperate. The Amazon Rainforest in Northern Brazil is crossed by the equator and experiences constant rainfall and thunderstorms.

Temperatures generally remain near 85 degrees in the forest. Moisture is almost always at 100%, creating the perfect habitat for the dense, exotic foliage the Amazon is known for. Although the heat and humidity are year round, the heaviest rainfall occurs from December to May.

Most of central and southern Brazil has a tropical climate, with a rainy season from October to March, and a dry season from May to August. Temperatures generally fall in the mid to high 80’s with little fluctuation. The sea on the northeastern coast hovers in the 80’s, while the southern coast averages between 72-77 degrees, making Brazil’s coast a perfect destination for swimming and beach-going.

Tropical weather on the beach in Brazil.

The farther south you go, the more temperate the climate becomes. Rio de Janeiro and its southern neighbors do experience a colder winter from June to August, with some temperatures falling to the low 70’s, still plenty comfortable for most travelers.

Again, microclimates and exceptions in weather do exist in this diverse country. It is best to research the particular towns, cities, and attractions you want to visit in order to get the most accurate information on weather.

The City of Curitiba

Curitiba, Brazil.

Curitiba lies east of Sao Paulo and is the capital city of the Brazilian state Paraná. While Curitiba is not the most glamorous Brazilian city, it has been recognized as one of the best examples of urban planning. What that means for visitors is clean streets, a pedestrian friendly city center, and a transportation infrastructure that really works.

The city boasts a downtown area closed to vehicles, where pedestrians can walk to shops and restaurants safely. Visitors to the city can hop on one of the many express buses to see the sights, such as the Panorama Tower, which offers a 360° view of Curitiba, or one of the plethora of green spaces. Bus fare is the same no matter how far you’re riding.

This city is a welcome respite from the intensity of other major cities in Brazil, and is well worth a stop if you are traveling to Iguazu Falls from Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo.

Top Festivals in Brazil

Reveillon  - On New Year’s Eve, Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro is packed with two million party goers. Festivities run from 7 pm to 4 am and include music, dancing, and fireworks. If you want to party like the locals, wear all white, as this is the official color of the Brazilian New Year.

Celebration of Iemenjá  - This festival pays tribute to the Candomblé goddess of water, Iemenjá, and is particularly popular in the city of Salvador. On February 2, devotees dress in white and send their blessed offerings out to sea. If the offerings do not return, Iemenjá has accepted them.

Festa Junina (June Festival)  - Across the country, Brazilians celebrate the beginning of winter with festivities spanning the entire month. These celebrations also recognize the Catholic saints Saint Anthony, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Peter. Celebrants also honor the harvest season while enjoying its plentiful food. Specific traditions vary from region to region.

Festival Parintins - Also known as Boi Bumbá, this festival is held in the city of Parintins on the banks of the Amazon. Boi Bumbá is part folk art, part performance, and part storytelling, as two groups compete to see how who can provide the most compelling reenactment of important folklore. Think colorful costumes, big dances, and serious but respectful rivalries.

Nazaré - About two million Catholics parade through the streets of Belém to pay tribute to Our Lady Nazareth in one of the largest religious festivals in the world. The festival takes place in October and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. No matter what you believe, witnessing devotees pulling the car that contains Our Lady of Nazareth’s image by a rope, is unforgettable.

Carnival in Rio - The city of Rio makes the list again with their famous Carnival celebration. Even though other cities offer their own festivities, Rio by far is the most popular. Look below for a more in-depth guide to Carnival.

All You Need to Know About Carnival in Brazil

What has become one of the biggest parties in the world actually began as a religious celebration. Carnival is held the week before the Catholic observance of Lent, in late February or early March, and marks the last feast and revelry until Easter. The official celebration begins the Friday afternoon before Ash Wednesday and ends on Ash Wednesday at noon, but for some Brazilians, especially in Rio de Janeiro, the party starts months before.

Carnival has become synonymous with Samba, the music and dance of Brazil that showcases its Latin and African roots. In Rio de Janeiro, Samba schools prepare all year for a chance to compete in a city wide competition, held in the Sambadrome Arena in front of over 70,000 spectators. These schools prepare elaborate costumes and parade floats, sometimes costing millions of dollars, to carry their dancers and musicians to victory.

The winning Samba school brings serious bragging rights to its neighborhood for the rest of the year. Ticket price to the Sambadrome parades range from the affordable to the luxurious. Tickets do sell out, so it is best to book early and always through a reputable party, as counterfeit tickets exist.

Some argue that the real party happens in the hundreds of block parties, or blocos, that happen around Rio from early January to mid February. Streets are shut down as musicians and drink vendors move in, drawing in crowds of hundreds to join in the fun. Some blocos boast hundreds of thousands of attendees.

These street parties are for everyone, not just the hedonistic. Although some blocos are known for an anything goes attitude, others cater to a mellower party-goer. There are blocos for the mature, the young, and the whole family.

Lodging in Rio becomes scarce and prices increase dramatically during the Carnival season, so it is best to book early. Rio de Janeiro has become synonymous with Carnival, but this celebration is not unique to one city. Cities all over Brazil, such as Sao Paulo, Recife, and Salvador, have their own unique Carnival traditions that all center around music, dancing, and the joy of celebration.

Common Tour Routes in Brazil

With Brazil being such a large country, it can be overwhelming trying to decide on your trip route. Most tours will cover specific regions to ensure you’re not spending most of your trip seeing Brazil through the window of your vehicle. Less travel time means you get to experience more.

Many Roads Lead to Rio

The most popular city on tours, by far, is Rio de Janeiro. Located on the eastern coast in the southern part of Brazil, Rio offers a starting point for many Brazil tours. From here, tours head north, to the state of Bahia. Visitors can go to Salvador, once the capital of Brazil, and experience the deep influence of Africa on Brazil's culture. Salvador is known for its music, food, and beaches.

Another popular destination for tours starting in Rio is Iguazu Falls, on the border of Argentina and Paraguay. On their way, tours often stop in Curitiba, a very unique Brazilian City, before continuing through the rainforest, and arriving in Foz do Iguazu.

Wildlife and Adventure Travel in Brazil

Hyacinth macaw in Pantanal, Brazil.

If your dream is to see Brazil’s wildlife in all its glory, then these tour routes are for you. Amazon tours typically begin in the city of Manaus, where guided boats steer you through the river and its abundant vegetation. Some tours cruise leisurely downstream while others offer a bit more adventure.

The other popular wildlife destinations are the Pantanal, the world’s largest wetland, and Bonito, known for its clear waterways and fascinating caves. These two destinations are a 4 hour drive apart, making them a popular pair on tour routes.

If you have the time, resources, and the drive, there are tours that visit every region into one trip! That way, you don’t have to choose between the excitement of Rio and the wonder of the Amazon. You can choose whatever tour route speaks to you.

Food in Brazil

When you’re eating in Brazil, expect a lot of meat! Brazil is known for its barbecue and serves it in generous portions. In churrascarias , or steakhouses, waiters cut meat straight from the skewer onto your plate.

Feijoada, a hearty stew of black beans and different cuts of pork, is another traditional Brazilian meal. Sea food, as in the dish bacalhao , is also popular along the coast. Pão de queijo , a sort of cheesy bread, is made with tapioca flour and curado minas cheese, and is naturally gluten-free.

Steak in Brazil.

Vegetarians and vegans will be hard pressed to find options, as most meals center around meat with rice and beans, and foods often include cheese. However, por kilo restaurants, which are self-service and priced by weight, could provide some choices.

Brazil also has some of the most available and delicious fruit juices, including acaí , which is often blended with ice and topped with more fruit and granola. And anyone can enjoy cachaça , a sugar cane alcohol used in Brazil’s national drink, the caiparinha.

5 Must Try Brazilian Foods:

1. Feijoada   - This traditional Brazilian meal is a hearty stew of black beans and different cuts of pork. It usually takes at least 24 hours to make and is traditionally served on the weekends when families can enjoy it together.

2. Moqueca -  This dish is typical of the northeastern state, Bahia. This fish or shrimp stew utilizes ingredients commonly found in the region, such as coconut milk, coriander, onions, and dendê , or palm oil.

3. Pão de queijo   - Literally translated as “cheese bread,” this dish is just that. It is made with tapioca flour, making it naturally gluten-free, and curado minas cheese, all rolled together and baked until the unique bread rolls are golden brown.

4. Acaí   - Brazil is the birthplace of this now-popular superfood, which is often blended with ice and topped with more fruit and granola.

5. Cachaça   - This isn’t technically a food, but it sure is an important part of Brazilian meals. Cachaça is a sugar cane alcohol used in Brazil’s national drink, the caiparinha. While the lower end stuff can have a strong resemblance to paint thinner, aged cachaça can be quite high end and smooth.

Working with a Brazil Trip Designer

The best way to ensure that you see everything on your Brazil vacation bucket list, working with a trip designer is a must. Trip designers help travelers make travel arrangements and customize their trip. They often make reservations for accommodations and activities.  They do all the hassle and you get to sit back and dream up your perfect trip.

The alternative is joining a pre-planned tour. If you like meeting new people and want to explore Brazil with a group, this is perfect for you. However if you want a personal touch to your visit, then this won't be the right fit. Pre-planned tours are great too, but you only can get so close to your dream vacation. With a Brazil trip designer, you can make your dream trip a reality.

Brazil Vacation Cost and Trip Length

Much like any destination, the cost of a trip to Brazil can vary and depends on many factors. The type of tour whether it be small group or private guided can influence price as well as the duration. We Focus on Sustainability

Good tourism is responsible and adapts to the country and its conditions. Therefore, we decided to champion sustainability as Brazil travel experts and support the project " Salve Floripa " in our home town of Florianópolis. The project promotes awareness for the local environment and seeks to preserve the Atlantic Rainforest and its biodiversity . We support various projects within this initiative, for example the creation of the first ecological map of Florianópolis. For you as a traveler in Brazil, this social commitment has an added value, as the ecological map also provides you with information about hikes or places for water sports. The preservation of nature in Ilha de Santa Catarina is particularly close to our hearts. Therefore, on World Environment Day on June 5th, we actively support beach maintenance in Barra da Lagoa. If you want to experience the project up close, we have attractive travel packages in and around Florianópolis for you!

Personal Recommendation From Our Team

We have grown particularly fond of the small and rather unknown state of Santa Catarina in the South of Brazil, which we have made our new home. Santa Catarina, with its capital city of Florianópolis, offers beautiful landscapes, fantastic beaches and an unimaginable variety of activities for your vacation. Small romantic fishing villages, secluded bays, white dream beaches, the Atlantic Rainforest and untouched canyons offer the best conditions for varied tours in Brazil. Discover with us the wondrous South of Brazil, hardly known outside of the country until now, and enchant your senses with its beauty and warm people!

Brazilian Amazon Tour Reviews

An amazing but very full on adventure. From day one, right through to the end it was very eventful, busy, challenging but most of all extremely rewarding. We had no expectations we we began the tour but our expectations were exceeded. We were blessed with mostly great weather, amazing scenery, fabulous fellow travellers and fantastic and very supportive guides.
The trip was incredible all the way our guide was full of character and had so much information the scenery was unreal and I would recommend this to everyone
Once again a dream that I realize Gorgoeous trip. This trip will not so fantastatic without Carmen our tour leader. She has excellent knowledge who was passionate about her country and love to share her culture and heritage with the group. She did that with her heart. Very good other guide also Keke for the Colca Canyon,... Varied activities, historical, homestay (communities), landscape, some animals (condors, other birds...), pisco sour, ... And also the wonderfull Inca trail (Yes I did it ;-))).Magic moments when we arrive to see the Matchu Pitchu after the 4 days of the trail. In more very good group good mood, atmosphere, ecouragments, partying... Good accomodation (big room, good located, ), good oragnized, excellent night bus (very confortable, space realy better than in Europe) . There are some long travel but it is like that. I come back with a lot of stars in my eyes !

G Adventures

"Itinerary: Overall Good. You will do many varied things on this tour. But you will completely miss Sacsayhuaman and Ollantaytambo. Two of the most important archeological sites in Peru. They will not bring you to those sights because there is an admission fee. They will instead bring you to free sites like Big White Jesus statue and the granaries of Ollantaytambo. Which is extremely lacking. They will also make you spend an entire day at their sponsored co-ops where they produce very overpriced goods. Complete waste of a day that you paid for. Tipping: There is a persistent request for tips. This makes one think that G adventures does not pay their workers a fair wage or asks them to expect less in hopes of making it up in tips. I don't mind in tipping hard working individuals like the porters on the Inca trail that go above and beyond, but when its always expected on small day trips, it gets tiring. Do not Pre-pay in advance for day tours Never pre-pay for a day tour too far in advance. Decide the day before. I pre-paid for the Rainbow mountain hike after the Inca trail. Big mistake. You may not feel like wanting to go on another long hike after the Inca trail. And there's no refunds. Looking back, I would have stayed in Cusco and relaxed for the day. Meals Some meals are included and some are not. The ones that are not are opportunities for the guide to introduce you to something new while getting a commission. You're free to go somewhere else but with peer pressure, you may find it hard when the entire group is going somewhere. Figure out where and what you want to eat and let the others get fleeced. Hotels They will be 1-2 stars. Bathrooms and beds are clean but the room itself seems poorly constructed. Would I go again? Yes, but I would pay attention to the things that make it a lesser experience. Figure out what's important to me and deviate from their agenda that makes it a lesser experience when possible.

Experience the true power of nature in Iguaçu and Pantanal!

Straddling the natural river border between Brazil and Argentina, the Iguaçu Falls are the largest in the world in terms of volume of water .

The enormous waterfalls of Iguaçu are listed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. With the roar of the falling water and the thousands of rainbows appearing in the mist surrounding 275 cascades, this unique natural site offers you an unprecedented multi-sensory experience.

In the middle of a luxuriant tropical forest, which is also a national park, you can observe this magnificent and hypnotising spectacle, from both the Brazilian side and the Argentinian side.

Access to the falls is via a network of paths and bridges that pass above the falls. The “Garganta del Diablo” bridge takes you as high as 90m to where the river falls into the abyss and you can enjoy the  impressive view.

Next stop is the savannah and flooded plains of Pantanal in the centre-west of the country. The biggest terrestrial wetland in the world, this region is still scarcely inhabited by man and essentially untouched offering a unique discovery experience. Both land and aquatic animals live here in abundance, due to the extraordinary variety of plants, a favourable climate and little human impact.

There are safaris on foot, by vehicle, on horseback or by boat that can take you to see rare animals such as Jaguar, Giant anteater and the Maned wolf as well as many others living in this amazing environment.

You can also get up close up to hundreds of little Jacaré (alligators) by day or night and see hundreds of exotic birds, such as the famous Jabiru, the emblem of this region.

This immersion in a natural paradise also presents an ideal chance to connect with the locals by staying in guest houses on the local farms or fazendas that are several hundred hectares in size.

Explore the unseen world of the Amazon and Lençóis Maranhenses

The next stage will take you further into the Amazon. The world’s largest tropical forest is an absolute must if you have come to Brazil to see nature.

You will begin your Amazonian stage with a private visit of Manaus , accompanied by a guide who will reveal all the secrets of this incredible town. You will be dazzled by the amazing Belle Epoque theatre, the interesting floating jetties and the colourful market.

Then you will set off towards the Juma lodge , a small hotel in the jungle with 20 rooms, isolated in a totally preserved part of the rainforest. It consists of charming bungalows on stilts facing a beautiful, calm lake. On the way to the lodge (3hrs) by vehicle and boat, you will experience the “meeting of the waters” where the Solimões and Negro rivers meet to create the majestic and famous Amazon.

This is a rare and fascinating phenomenon where the two rivers flow side by side for tens of kilometres but don´t mix. You will then spend several days isolated in the heart of the Amazon jungle, a new world waiting for you to discover through excursions to see the many beautiful and natural sites. Fishing for piranha and  getting up close and personal to alligators are some of the options available for the brave! You will leave with a totally different image of this complex and enchanting environment.

Lençóis Do Maranhão  is the next stage of your tour. This vast natural park at the gates of the Amazon that resembles giant crumpled white bed sheets from the sky, is in fact a giant dune field dotted with thousands of rainwater lagoons. This is the combined result of the rains falling every year from March to May and the water-tight ground that traps the water on the sandy surface where it slowly evaporates under the hot tropical sun.

After venturing into the dunes, you will find it is totally deserted and you can experience magical moments; bathing in these natural swimming pools of fresh water, alone in the calm of this incredible landscape. You will be able to truly relax in this unique destination, walking bare foot and bathing in the clear waters. Top it off with a fabulous sunset over the desert, a rare and unique moment you will never forget!

To get to this other world, you pass through the regional capital  Sáo Luís , then 4hrs. by road to the small town of Barreirinhas  from where you will set off to explore this unique desert. On the way back you will get to visit this interesting town founded in 1612 by a French expedition from Cancale.

After having conquered the town, the Portuguese established a large and prosperous trading port here. The wealth created attracted many artists and the affluent traders lived in beautiful houses. These are listed as important and historic pieces of Portuguese colonial architecture.

Top it all off with the legendary Rio de Janeiro

Your tour comes to a majestic end in Rio de Janeiro . It has been the world’s samba capital for years, and as the most visited tourist destination in Brazil, the Fluminense capital is a must.

The “ Zona Sul”  is in fact one of the greenest urban areas in the world which is why it´s included on our Discover Nature Tour. Surrounded by the “ morros” – small rounded mountains with their feet in the ocean, Rio is in a unique geographical setting especially when you consider the size of the city.

Sugar Loaf Mountain and its little brother Urca mountain that stand at the entrance to Guanabara bay and Corcovado are surrounded by the Tijuca forest. Atop these guardians of Rio you will be greeted with a breathtaking view of the “City of God.”

One always remembers a visit to Rio, where you can really feel the famous “joie de vivre” of its inhabitants, the “Cariocas.” Proof that you can reconcile nature and urbanism in a harmonious way, Rio is a city full of nature and simply amazing!

There is the court house, the Rio Negro palaces and the famous Amazonas theatre built in the mid 19th century and recently totally refurbished. This beautiful theatre has become the symbol of Manaus. Inside you will find a magnificent European style performance hall but with a characteristic Brazilian rococo touch.

You will also see the Mercado Municipal, a permanent market with literally piles of “cuia” for sale. These are small bowls for drinking tea, made from the fruit of the Cuiera tree. They are usually carefully painted with local designs or flower designs on a black background. An interesting market full of this kind of handicraft. The Mercado Municipal is a great opportunity to taste lots of new and different local forest foods as well.

Furthermore there is a local fish market that sells very exotic and delicous fish. There are enormous Pirarucu and the unusual Tambaqui with almost human-like teeth and the delicious Tucunare. Ideal for choosing what you want to eat later!

After returning to the hotel and having lunch, it’s off to the port to take a ferry for your transfer to the lodge . It’s a 3hr expedition to reach your destination in the heart of the jungle and the transfer itself is already an adventure. You will experience the “Encounter of the Waters,” the contrast between the dark but clear waters of the Rio Negro running alongside the lighter but murky waters of the Rio Solimoes, creating an unusual phenomenon in that they don´t mix for kilometres.

Once across the river you will take a vehicle and another boat before arriving at your lodge. Then you will go nocturnal alligator watching!

After lunch, you continue towards the other amazing view point in town, Sugar Loaf Mountain.

tours through brazil

Getting behind the wheel of a car in Brazil opens the door to a world of road trip adventures. Distances may be long and routes may be rough in places, but the sense of achievement that comes from driving the country’s snaking coastal byways, inland highways and high mountain roads will stay with you for a lifetime.

With the opt-in approach to road traffic laws and the fact that 87% of Brazil's rodovías (highways) are unsurfaced, undivided roads, driving in this huge country isn't always easy, but don’t let that put you off. If you stick to daytime driving and avoid bigger cities, road travel in Brazil gets a lot less stressful.

With some careful planning and a philosophical commitment to taking it slow, a road trip through Brazil can be an uplifting adventure through a world of natural wonders. Here's our guide to the best road trips in Brazil.

Rio-Santos Road

Best road trip for beautiful beaches.

Santos–Rio de Janeiro; 550km (341 miles)

The coastal road linking Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo  is definitely not the quickest way to get between the two cities, but it’s certainly the most interesting.

Wedged between the forest-covered slopes of the Serra do Mar and the Atlantic Ocean, this winding route takes in all the curves of the coastline, passing thousands of beaches and hundreds of islands, some of which are well worth an overnight stop (Ilha Grande and Ilha Bela are standout places to break the trip).

While the journey can be completed in two or three days, it’s worth taking your time. The road was built in the 1970s and it has views of the ocean for much of the way, crossing sparkling rivers and passing peaceful fishing villages as well as more bustling vacation spots.

The Portuguese-founded town of Paraty is an essential overnight stop, as are the pristine beaches north of Ubatuba, such as Praia do Félix and Itamambuca.

Leave time for activities, too. Along the way, you can explore waterfalls, hike in the dense Atlantic Forest and enjoy tastings at distilleries making cachaça (a distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice). Make regular pit stops at beach shacks or upscale restaurants to try caiçara cuisine, the seafood-rich cooking tradition of the coastal communities in Brazil’s southeast.

Woman walking past colorful colonial architecture in Ouro Preto, Brazil

The Royal Road

Best road trip for historical sites.

Ouro Preto–Paraty; 710km (441 miles)

The Estrada Real (Royal Road) charts a major slice of Brazil’s colonial history along its 932-mile route. Actually a network of roads rather than a single route, the Estrada Real was built on the labor of thousands of enslaved people from the 17th century onward to connect the mining towns in Brazil’s interior with the ports in Paraty and later Rio de Janeiro, from where gold and diamonds were shipped to Portugal. So, yes, the usual colonial story...

These days, the route stands out for its scenery, culture and architecture, linking many of Brazil's most striking Portuguese-era townships. To help with route-finding, the Instituto Estrada Real can provide maps and a Royal Road “passport” that can be stamped at checkpoints along the way.

The most interesting stretch is the Caminho Velho (Old Route), which links the colonial towns of Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Mariana and Congonhas, famed for their baroque churches and steep cobbled streets.

The Caminho Velho takes about eight days to drive and mainly follows dirt roads, so a 4x4 is a must. The route starts in Ouro Preto and ends on the coast in Paraty – both are Unesco World Heritage sites, hailed for their history and biodiversity, respectively.

Stop along the way to visit waterfalls, traditional cheesemakers and restaurants serving comida mineira (the region's hearty comfort food – packed with corn, cassava, beans, and pork and slow-cooked on a wood-fired range). Trips can be planned around the route’s many festivals, covering everything from film to photography to food.

The Northern Bahian coast

Best road trip for sea views.

Aracajú–Boipeba; 560km (347 miles)

Bahia is the Brazilian state with the longest coastline – an impressive 930km (579 miles) of chic beach resorts, small fishing villages and everything in between. Coconut Coast, Cacau Coast and the Discovery Coast are some of the evocative monikers applied to specific stretches of this coastline.

In Bahia, no one is in a hurry, and that’s the best approach to take on this road trip, stopping as often as possible for fresh seafood lunches and dips in the sea.

Starting in the Sergipe state capital of Aracajú, it’s an easy drive south to Mangue Seco, a beautiful peninsula on the northern tip of Bahia state and the start of the palm-fringed Coconut Coast. The vacation town of Praia do Forte and the Tamar turtle preservation project are well worth a visit, too, before reaching Salvador , the historic state capital and the heart of Brazil’s Afro-Brazilian culture.

A regular car ferry crosses the Bay of All Saints to Bom Despacho, from where the Dendê Coast heads south, offering more appealing beach stops. To finish, park up in Valença or Graciosa and take a small speedboat over to Boipeba Island, famed for its pristine white sand and turquoise waters.

Lagoon in the dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Brazil

Rota das Emoções

Best road trip for escapism.

São Luís do Maranhão–Jericoacoara; 642km (399 miles)

A ride on the wild side might be a more poetic translation of Rota das Emoções – the "Route of Emotions" (happy ones, we hope). The long stretch of road that connects São Luís , the capital of Maranhão, with the seaside vacation town of Jericoacoara takes in the natural wonders of this wind-swept corner of Brazil’s northeastern coast.

The first stop is Lençóis Maranhenses , where crystal clear freshwater lagoons form during the rainy season across a 1550 sq km (598 sq mile) expanse of sand dunes. To take in the majesty of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park , a chartered flight offers the best vantage point, though hiking, quad bikes and jeep tours allow visitors the bonus of a dip in the lagoons.

Next, stop at the Parnaíba River Delta, where dozens of islands are home to mangrove forests and a set of flora and fauna best explored by boat. Flocks of bright red guarás (scarlet ibises) fill the skies as they come in to roost at sunset.

The final stretch is along the Ceará coast – one of the world's top destinations for kitesurfing – ending in Jericoacoara (or “Jeri”) for a few days soaking up the beauty of the neighboring national park, kitesurfing or just relaxing on the beach. The town is surrounded by sand dunes and sea, but it is possible to drive all the way to Jeri by picking up a local guide in Jijoca or Prea and deflating your tires for sand driving to navigate the final stretch.

Otherwise, you can park outside the dunes and take a transfer by 4x4. The small town of Camocim also has parking options and beach buggy rides to Jeri.

Wild Jaguar walking through thick vegetation in Pantanal, Brazil

Estrada Transpantaneira

Best road trip for wildlife.

Poconé–Porto Jofre; 150km ( 93 miles)

The Pantanal is the world’s largest wetland, covering some 209,790 sq km (81,000 sq miles), mostly in Brazil but also spilling into neighboring Bolivia and Paraguay.

This natural wonderland is a must-visit for wildlife lovers – the forests teem with big creatures such as caimans, capybaras and jaguars and a menagerie of birds. The best way to reach more remote parts of the Panatal is by plane or boat, but you can get here on four wheels following the road known as the Transpantaneira – route MT-060.

This dirt road cuts into the Pantanal from the north and can be driven in a regular car during the dry season (April to September) when wildlife is also easier to spot. However, a 4x4 is essential during the rainy season when rivers can turn into lakes. Hotels of varying standards line the Transpantaneira, and most can arrange boat rides and nocturnal excursions to seek out wildlife.

When fires ravaged the Pantanal in 2020, a campaign was launched to encourage tourists to visit, promoting responsible tourism as a viable economic alternative to cattle ranching to help protect the region's unique biodiversity. The Instituto Homem Pantaneiro is a local NGO that, among other things, promotes ecotourism experiences, investing its income in local conservation projects.

Walker at the top of Pico da Bandeira, Brazil

Espírito Santo Mountains

Best road trip for eating and drinking.

Start – Vitória; Finish – Alto do Caparaó; Distance – 151 miles/243km

The coastal state of Espírito Santo is sandwiched between Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, and its green mountains offer some of Brazil's best hikes . Less than an hour’s drive from the state capital, Vitoria, the BR-262 highway climbs slowly up into the Serra Capixaba where an agritourism scene has flourished in recent years.

Organic farms, delis, restaurants, cafes and guesthouses are all mapped out on a gentle route that connects Domingos Martins and Venda Nova do Imigrante.

In the mid-19th century, immigrants began to arrive in this area from Germany, Italy and Pomerania (a historical region on the Baltic Sea), and they lived in relative isolation until the BR-262 was constructed in the 1960s.

Many of their traditions are still alive, particularly in their kitchens. In Venda Nova do Imigrante, highlights include socol (a pork sausage of Italian origin) and polenta – the town even hosts an annual polenta festival serving up a giant pot of polenta weighing in at more than one ton.

The Rota do Lagarto, a bucolic 8km (5-mile) detour off the BR-262, goes past the entrance to the Pedra Azul state park where hikers can climb to the top of the “blue” granite rock that gave the park its name. For equally stunning vistas and a more challenging hike, it’s a further 62 miles to 2892m (9488ft) Pico da Bandeira, the third highest mountain in Brazil.

Lush green landscape of Serra do Rio do Rastro in Brazil

Rio do Rastro

Best road trip for panoramic views.

Lauro Muller–Bom Jardim da Serra; 34km (21 miles)

High up in the Serra Catarinense, where the tops of the peaks are sprinkled with snow in winter, the Rio do Rastro road winds its way along a sheer ridge in a series of sharp chicanes. This short stretch of road, which precariously hugs a steep mountainside, is possibly the most breathtaking drive in Brazil.

Spectacular views of the valleys below open up beside the route, and panoramic lookout points along the way allow drivers to stop and snap away. Start or end in either Lauro Muller or Bom Jardim da Serra – the two small towns that bookend the Rio do Rastro road, officially known as the SC-390 – finishing about 100km (62 miles) east on the coast.

The road’s highest point, the 1460m (4790ft) Mirante Serra do Rio do Rastro, is a good spot to park and have lunch. On a clear day, visitors can see as far as the Atlantic Ocean; avoid the morning fog by visiting between 11am and 3pm.

From here, it’s a short 2.9km (1.8-mile) detour to visit the Cânion da Ronda – a canyon with a 360-degree view, a wind farm and a rewarding short hiking trail. While in the area, the Barrinha waterfall is worth a stop.

Destination Description

See the Department of State’s Fact Sheet on Brazil for information on U.S.-Brazil relations.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.

Effective midnight on April 10, 2025 , a visa will be required for U.S. citizens to travel to Brazil, regardless of the purpose of travel. For more information about visa requirements, visit the Brazilian government-authorized website, https://brazil.vfsevisa.com

You will need:

  • A valid U.S. passport.
  • A valid Brazilian visa or e-visa, beginning April 10, 2025 for tourists and currently for all other types of travel.
  • Visit the Brazilian government-authorized website to obtain your e-visa: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com

Find a  Brazilian consulate abroad .

Brazilian law requires any minor who is a Brazilian citizen (even dual nationals who are both U.S. and Brazilian citizens) to have permission from each parent to travel within Brazil or exit the country. When a minor travels with both parents, no written authorization is needed. When the minor travels with only one parent or without either parent, s/he  must have two original written authorization letters from each absent parent  and carry a copy* of the child’s birth certificate or have an annotation in his/her Brazilian passport authorizing travel alone or with only one parent. Brazilian citizen minors without authorization letters and a birth certificate* or an annotated Brazilian passport likely will not be allowed by authorities to pass through immigration or to board a flight departing Brazil.

The U.S. Embassy and its consulates cannot intervene in Brazilian immigration matters or request that this requirement be waived for U.S. citizen travelers.

Written Authorization Letter:  If the absent parent is in Brazil, written authorization letters must be in Portuguese and notarized by a Brazilian notary. If the absent parent is in the United States or elsewhere outside of Brazil, the authorization must be done at the nearest Brazilian Embassy or Consulate using the form provided by that office. Again, please note that Brazilian law requires two original authorizations for each absent parent. This is important, because Federal Police may request and retain one authorization upon the minor’s entry into Brazil. Authorities may then request the second original document upon the minor’s departure.  Authorizations written in English or executed before a U.S. (or any non-Brazilian) notary public are not accepted by the Brazilian Federal Police.  Similarly, birth certificates issued outside of Brazil that are not  apostilled * and translated by a certified translator may not be accepted.

Brazilian Passport Annotation:  In lieu of carrying authorization letters, parents of dual U.S.-Brazilian citizen minors may instead request an annotation be placed in the minor’s Brazilian passport authorizing the minor to travel with only one parent, or to travel alone or with a third party. This annotation replaces the requirement for written authorization letters until the passport expires. Parents residing in Brazil should contact the Brazilian Federal Police for details on obtaining an annotated passport. Parents residing abroad should contact the nearest Brazilian Embassy or Consulate. The annotated Brazilian passport must not be expired and must be carried along with the minor’s U.S. passport at all times for Brazilian Federal Police to accept it in lieu of an authorization letter. There is no comparable annotation available in U.S. passports.

Children who are not dual citizens of Brazil: Please note that, while Brazilian law related to travel authorization does not explicitly apply to non-citizens of Brazil, Federal Police have, at times, delayed the travel of non-Brazilian minors who lack appropriate authorization from both parents. For this reason, we recommend that families of non-Brazilian minors who may travel through Brazil without one or both parents execute written authorizations (following the instructions in the preceding paragraph) in advance of travel and ensure that the minor, or the minor’s traveling companion, carries the original or notarized copy** of the minor’s birth certificate.

An exemplar of the form used by Brazilian authorities to document parental permission for minors to travel without one or both parents may be found here.

*There is a useful pamphlet published by the Hague Conference called “ The ABCs of Apostilles .” The Brazilian competent authority that issues apostilles is the  Conselho Nacional de Justiça .

**If the birth certificate was issued in Brazil, copies must be notarized by a Brazilian notary. If issued outside of Brazil, copies must be apostilled and translated by a certified translator into Portuguese.

HIV/AIDS Restrictions:  The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Brazil.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Crime:  The violent crime rate is high in most Brazilian urban centers. Public transportation, hotel sectors, and tourist areas report high crime rates, but these incidents can happen anywhere and at any time.  Be aware of your surroundings.

  • Informal housing developments in Brazil (commonly referred to in Brazil as favelas, vilas, comunidades, and/or satellite cities), even on a guided tour, at any time of day due to crime. Neither the tour companies nor the police can guarantee your safety when entering these areas. Even in favelas that the police or local governments deem safe, the situation can change quickly and without notice. In addition, exercise caution in areas surrounding favelas, as occasionally, inter-gang fighting and confrontations with police move beyond the confines of these communities.
  • Brasilia’s administrative regions (commonly known as “satellite cities”) of Ceilandia, Santa Maria, Sao Sebastiao, and Paranoa during non-daylight hours due to crime.
  • Any areas within 150 km of Brazil’s land borders with Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Paraguay due to crime. (Note: This does not apply to the Foz do Iguacu National Park or Pantanal National Park.)
  • Consider avoiding the use of public, municipal buses in Brazil at any time of day, and especially at night. Crime trends indicate an elevated risk of robbery or assault on public bus systems throughout Brazil. The U.S. government recommends against personnel using public, municipal buses in all parts of Brazil.
  • Avoid going to bars or nightclubs alone and avoid leaving with strangers.
  • Before going on a date with someone you met on a dating app, tell a loved one who you are meeting, where you are going, and the details of the dating application account.
  • Be wary about inviting individuals to your residence. If inviting a new acquaintance to your residence, speak to your door attendant in advance about your invited guest.
  • Trust your instincts – if something does not feel right or if you suddenly feel ill, walk away from the situation.
  • If you believe you may have been drugged, seek immediate medical attention. Some people can have life-threatening reactions to these drugs. After that, report the crime to local police and contact us at the numbers listed below.
  • Traveling Outside Metropolitan Areas After Dark: Travelers are encouraged to organize their trips so that they can travel during daylight hours. Road conditions throughout Brazil can vary widely, and travelers must exercise caution due to debris in the road, horse-drawn carriages, unmarked speed bumps, and other infrastructure deficiencies.
  • Armed hold-ups of pedestrians and motorists can happen, including at or near public beaches. Personal belongings, left unattended even for a moment, are often taken. If you are robbed, hand over your personal belongings without resisting. Resisting will increase your risk of injury.
  • Carjackings and hold-ups can occur at any time of the day or night, especially at intersections and in tunnels. Some robberies involve individuals robbed at gunpoint and taken to make purchases or to withdraw as much money as possible from one or more ATMs.
  • Crime on public transportation occurs.  Registered taxis have red license plates and openly display company information and phone numbers.
  • Credit card fraud and ATM scams are common in Brazil. Work closely with your financial institutions to monitor accounts and keep your credit card in view while it is scanned at a point of sale.
  • Avoid using ATMs in unfamiliar, secluded, or lightly protected areas. Be aware that criminals often target ATMs and businesses in the early hours of the morning when there are fewer witnesses and law enforcement response times may be delayed. If you opt to use an ATM, select those that are located inside of secure facilities, such as an airport, hospital, bank, or government building.
  • Avoid openly displaying your cell phone.  When using a ride share service or taxi, wait for its arrival in a secure area.
  • Avoid large groups or events where crowds have gathered. Public events of any nature, including concerts and sporting events, can unexpectedly turn violent.
  • Travel to any areas within 150 km of the international borders with Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Paraguay, except in limited circumstances with the appropriate U.S. Department of State approvals. Individuals with ties to illegal criminal networks operate along Brazilian borders. Travel to the Foz do Iguaçu National Park and Pantanal National Park is permitted.
  • Enter any informal housing developments in Brazil (commonly referred to in Brazil as favelas, vilas, comunidades, and/or satellite cities), except in limited circumstances with the appropriate approvals.
  • Enter Brasilia’s administrative regions (commonly known as “satellite cities”) of Ceilandia, Santa Maria, Sao Sebastiao, and Paranoa during non-daylight hours.

To reduce the chance of becoming the victim of a crime, in addition to the above recommendations, please review the below precautions:

  • Limit the personal belongings you carry with you. Carry your money in your front pockets and limit the number of credit cards you carry. Make copies of all of your personal documents – including your credit cards, license, passport, etc. – and keep them in a safe place. This will be helpful if you lose your documents.
  • Do not carry or wear valuable items that will attract the attention of thieves. If you need to wear expensive jewelry or carry a camera, conceal it until you arrive at your destination.
  • Be aware of the street environment and avoid contact with those who may be looking for robbery targets. Seek a safer location. Go into a store, bank, or simply cross the street.
  • Do not walk on beaches after dark. Assaults are common.
  • Use increased caution when hiking in isolated areas, particularly near popular tourist locations in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Demonstrations  and strikes are common in urban areas, may occur unexpectedly, disrupt transportation, and may escalate into violence.

  • Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent.
  • Avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • Check the website of the Embassy or Consulate nearest you for current information on demonstrations.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information.

Victims of Crime:

U.S. citizen victims of crime should contact the local authorities to file a Brazilian police report before departing Brazil. In most instances, you can report crimes to the tourist or civil police. U.S. citizens should also inform the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting the crime.

  • Police number - 190
  • the U.S. Embassy at 011-55-61-3312-7000
  • the U.S. Consulate General in Porto Alegre at 011-55-51-3345-6000
  • the U.S. Consulate General in Recife at 011-55-81-3416-3050 or 011-55-81-3416-3080
  • the U.S. Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro at 011-55-21-3823-2000
  • the U.S. Consulate General in Sao Paulo at 011-55-11-3250-5000

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Replace a lost or stolen passport
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Provide information on  victims' compensation programs in the U.S .
  • Provide a list of local lawyers who speak English

The local equivalent to the “911” emergency line in Brazil is divided among four services:

  • 190 - Policia (Police)
  • 191 - Policia Rodoviaria (on interstate roads)
  • 192 - Ambulancia (Ambulance)
  • 193 - Bombeiros (Fire Department)

Victims of Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault:  Contact the nearest Embassy or Consulate for assistance after contacting local authorities.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities are inconsistent. Inquire with property management about the presence and functionality of safety equipment, such as fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Hazardous areas/activities are normally identified with appropriate signage in major urban centers but may not be in other locations. Tourism industry staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate and timely medical treatment is consistently available only in or near major cities. First responders can face delays accessing areas outside of major cities to quickly provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy or Consulate immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Firearms: Brazil forbids importing, exporting, and possessing firearms without prior authorization of the Brazilian Government. U.S. citizens are subject to arrest and prosecution in Brazil for possession of unauthorized firearms or firearm components anywhere in the country, including airports. This prohibition extends to spent shell casings or ammunition, even if inside luggage during transit, regardless of whether those items were legally purchased in the United States or elsewhere.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

Water Hazards:  Many of Brazil’s beaches have very dangerous riptides, even if the water looks safe. Ocean currents and waves are unpredictable, even in popular beaches frequented by tourists. Shark attacks are reported in the waters of some beaches in northeastern Brazil, particularly near Recife. Always observe posted warnings and never swim while under the influence of alcohol. Follow local authorities’ guidance and refrain from swimming alone in areas marked with red warning signs or at beaches where there are no municipal lifeguards or first responder services.

Electricity Blackouts:  Power failures in large urban centers are common and sometimes followed by increased crime. Most tourist hotels are equipped with generators, minimizing the impact of a blackout, but you should remain cautious.

Natural Disasters:  Flooding and mudslides occur throughout the country and can be fatal. Monitor news and weather reports and adhere to municipal advisories before traveling to areas prone to flooding or landslides. Many of Brazil’s larger cities have frequent heavy rainstorms that cause flash flooding and can disrupt traffic.

Customs Restrictions : Contact the Brazilian Embassy in Washington, D.C. or one of Brazil's consulates in the United States for specific information regarding import and export regulations. Please also refer to our  information on customs regulations .

  • Brazilian customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning temporarily importing or exporting items such as firearms, antiquities, mineral samples, tropical plants, wildlife, medications, and business and communication equipment.
  • In the Amazon region, there is special scrutiny of exporting biological material. People raising, growing, or exporting biological materials without permits can be charged with “biopiracy.”

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  Brazil does not have legal restrictions on same-sex marriage, relations, or events coordinated by LGBTI organizations. However, according to the 2019 Human Rights Report, violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) individuals was a serious concern, with local NGOs reporting 297 LGBTI persons were victims of hate killings. See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  Brazilian law prohibits discrimination against persons with physical and mental disabilities in employment, education, and access to health care. However, accessibility to public transportation and the ability to accommodate the needs of physically disabled persons are limited in most areas.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

COVID-19 Testing: Brazil is a very large, diverse country with varying medical resources, both private and public, throughout the country. Many private labs perform COVID-19 testing at various prices, typically between $20 and $100.  PCR, serology-based antibody tests, and antigen tests are available.  Turn-around time varies widely depending upon location. Please verify turn-around time with your chosen lab before taking the test.  Express results within 2-4 hours are available in many locations at an increased fee, including in the Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo and Galeão International Airport in Rio de Janeiro. Testing is available in the private sector without a doctor’s prescription, but a prescription may be required for insurance payment.

In the public healthcare system, each Brazilian state has its own COVID-19 testing plan. We recommend that you  contact local/state authorities for more information.  Typically, a COVID-19 test is ordered by an emergency room physician and then sent to a public lab. Turnaround time is much slower and can take up to seven days, but tests are generally free.  Information on testing sites and procedures is available through the  official app of the Ministry of Health.

COVID-19 Vaccines: The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Brazil once they register with the public Unified Health System (SUS) . According to the Ministry of Health, available vaccines include AstraZeneca/Oxford (Fiocruz), CoronaVac (Butantan), Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), and Pfizer (BioNTech). For more information on local availability of COVID-19 vaccines, please see the Brazilian Ministry of Health’s website and also contact local health authorities .

For emergency services in Brazil, dial 192.

Ambulance services are not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except in state capitals and other large cities.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on overseas insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

If traveling with prescription medication, check with the  Government of Brazil  to ensure the medication is legal in Brazil. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Though the yellow fever vaccine is not required to enter Brazil, travelers wishing to be vaccinated should consider receiving it prior to travel, as local supplies are limited. Please note that the yellow fever vaccine should be administered ten days prior to travel for it to be effective.

Also note that, while yellow fever vaccine is not required to enter Brazil, some neighboring countries (French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, Bolivia, and Paraguay) do require travelers with recent entries in Brazil to show proof of yellow fever vaccination.

All travelers to the country are advised to carry documentation, such as a vaccination card, that they have been appropriately vaccinated for yellow fever.

The following diseases are prevalent in Brazil:

  • Chikungunya
  • Leishmaniasis
  • Travelers' diarrhea
  • Tuberculosis
  • Schistosomiasis

In recent years, outbreaks of these diseases have also been detected in certain areas of Brazil:

  • Yellow fever

Elective Surgery : Although Brazil has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies widely. If you plan to undergo surgery in Brazil, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available and professionals are accredited and qualified. Some “boutique” plastic surgery operations offer luxurious facilities but are not hospitals and are unable to handle emergencies.

Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for information on Medical Tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to Brazil.

Non-traditional Medicine: Several U.S. citizens have died while seeking medical care from non-traditional “healers” and practitioners in Brazil. Ensure you have access to licensed emergency medical facilities if seeking such services.

Travel and Transportation

Public Transportation:  Consider avoiding the use of public, municipal buses in Brazil at any time of day, and especially at night. Crime trends indicate an elevated risk of robbery or assault on public bus systems throughout Brazil. The U.S. government recommends against personnel using public, municipal buses in all parts of Brazil.

Public buses are one of the main modes of inter-city road travel. Buses can range (depending on route and price) from luxurious and well-maintained to basic and mechanically unsound. Bus hijacking can occur at random.

Road Conditions and Safety:  Driving on Brazil's roads poses significant risks. Poor driving skills, bad roads, and high-density traffic make road travel more hazardous than in the United States. Road maintenance is inadequate in many areas and some long-distance roads through the Amazon forest are impassable much of the year due to flooding.

Apart from toll roads, which generally have their own services, roadside assistance is available only sporadically and informally through local mechanics. The fastest way to summon assistance in an emergency anywhere in the country is to dial 193, a universal number staffed by local fire departments. This service is in Portuguese only.

Traffic Laws:  Travelers planning on staying for more than 180 days should obtain an Inter-American Driving Permit to carry with their valid U.S. license if they plan to drive in Brazil. Such permits can be obtained through AAA or other sources. Please note:

  • Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt. Brazilian federal law requires child seats for all children under the age of 7 ½. From age 7 ½ years to 10, children must only ride in the back seat.
  • Drivers must yield the right of way to cars on their right. Compliance with stop signs is rarely enforced, so many motorists treat them as yield signs. It is common for drivers to turn or cross one or more lanes of traffic without warning.
  • Drivers often flash their lights or wave their hand out the window to signal other drivers to slow down.
  • Pedestrian crossings are only observed in some places, such as Brasilia.
  • Drivers must have their daytime running lights on during the day and headlights on at night on Federal Highways.
  • Under Brazil’s Lei Seca (“Dry Law”),  you cannot operate a vehicle with any measurable blood-alcohol level. Checkpoints are often set up in urban areas, and randomly chosen drivers are required to perform a breathalyzer test. Those in violation are subject to legal penalties and having their vehicle impounded.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Visit the website of Brazil’s  national tourist office  and  national authority responsible for road safety .

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Brazil’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Brazil’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Brazil should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts .  Information may also be posted to the   U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the  NGA broadcast warnings .
