Proud enough, in fact, to put together this list of more than 70 different Star Trek baby names, inspired by the five different series: the original, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise .

We also can’t forget to honor the creator of the Star Trek universe: you could always name your kid after Eugene “ Gene” Wesley Roddenberry.

Want something completely alien? Got that. Something traditional from Earth? Have some of those, too. We also have a few that are interesting but don’t scream, “My mom took me to Comic Con when I was a month old.”

Baby names inspired by Star Trek (the original series)

So, you’re enough of a geek that you love Star Trek so much that you’d consider naming your child after someone or something from the show. Awesome.

I’ll spare you casually listing off the first name of every character with a “normal” name, because it’s not like no one has thought of naming their kid James before — but James Tiberius (or just Tiberius, for that matter) is far more interesting, and will absolutely get your point across.

Infinite diversity in infinite names

For the more adventurous, you could consider the gamut of Vulcan names such as Spock, Sarek, T’Pau (where do you think the “ Heart and Soul” band got the name, hmm?), or T’Pol.

I suppose if you’re a fan of the Klingons, you could go that route as well — but personally, I don’t think I’d name my son or daughter anything that sounds like my cat being sick on the living room floor.

Interplanetary Star Trek baby names

There is nothing restricting you to using just character names. You can go with Vulcan (also, of course, the Roman god of the forge), or perhaps Andor or Andoria, if you’re a fan of the blue guys with the funny antennae.

Truly, one can run wild with a Star Trek-themed name, as there are over 35 years’ worth of work to choose one from.

As such, this can only be an extremely partial list, intended to get your creative naming juices flowing. In no time you’ll have that perfectly geeky name for your little one.

Names from Star Trek: The Next Generation

If you want to make it so, Jean-Luc is a nice choice, and will stand out without being blindingly obvious that mom and dad are complete nerds.

If you’re slightly more daring, why not try using a last name instead? Picard or Riker would certainly make for good, interesting boy names.

There’s a limit to what works here, however. For example, you may wish to avoid naming your son Crusher , unless you plan on him becoming a professional wrestler.

And unless you want to give your child a life of computer record hassles — meaning everything from his driver’s license to his direct-deposit — there’s one more name we definitely can’t recommend: Data.

You could also consider the old Welsh name Rhys for Lt. Gen Rhys , and Bryce for Lt. R.A. Bryce — plus the names Ash, Tyler , Keyla , Philippa and Georgiou. Also consider for a girl Sonequa, for Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Michael Burnham.

Star Trek: Picard

In this 2020 TV series, the multi-talented Isa Briones plays sisters Soji and Dahj — both unique and beautiful names. (Isa is short for Isabella .)

Kimara  – Portrayed by Adrienne Barbeau (Rizzo in Grease ) Kimara Cretak is the name of a Romulan representative on season 7 of Deep Space 9 .

Kira  – The surname comes first for Deep Space Nine character Kira Nerys and her kin, as is Bajoran custom. Possibly derived from Hindi/Sanskrit Kiran, ‘giver of light.’

Kirk  – A Scottish and Northern English word meaning “church,” or more specifically the Church of Scotland. Surname of the original Enterprise captain, James T. Kirk.

Maxwell  – A vice admiral on Starfleet Command, the human character Maxwell Forrest appeared on Star Trek: Enterprise (seasons 1-4).

Leeta  – A Dabo girl for the betting game and Deep Space Nine resident who later married Rom, this Bajoran name sounds the same as that of female wrestler, Lita.

Leland  – Or “Lee.” Star Trek: Discovery (season 2) — a commanding officer in Section 31. Originally the name is Old English for “lives by unseeded land.”

Linus  – A science officer on Discovery and the son of Apollo in Greek mythology, it’s a respectable name that would do well to emerge from the shadow of Peanuts .

Mila  – A Cardassian housekeeper in seasons 3 and 7 of Deep Space 9 , Mila is also a female Slavic name from Eastern Europe meaning “gracious” or “dear.”

Miri  – Diminutive of the name Miriam, recorded in Biblical Hebrew, and the name of the eighth episode in TOS and its teenage title character played by Kim Darby.

Nilsson  – The name of a female officer in seasons 2 and 3 of Discovery , we also like the name for boys as an homage to American songwriting great Harry Nilsson.

O’Brien  – Miles and Molly O’Brien are a human couple on Deep Space Nine and aboard the Enterprise. He is the only major character who is Irish, from Ireland.

Owen  – Owen Paris is a cast member on the Pathfinder Project in Star Trek: Voyager . It’s Welsh, dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, meaning “noble-born.”

Jet  – Jet Reno is Lt. Commander on Discovery , played by stand-up comic and actor Tig Notaro. Can be masculine or feminine, it’s common in Dutch-speaking countries.

Cristobal  – Cristobal ‘Chris’ Rios is a character on Star Trek: Picard who, at first, is reluctant to help the hero of this new series debuting this month on CBS All Access.

I really can see quite a few of the names from both genders being usable today and not getting , “old and dated”, in 20+ years.

But most of them are fantastic names for, of course, science fiction, or even fantasy stories. I loved Data’s daughter’s name Lal, which I saw on here for a boy, and wonder if it was a reuse or not. I loved Data’s brother’s name Lor. I wanted to name another boy Lorne, after Lorne Greene (Bonanza/Battlestar Galactica) but people kept thinking I was saying Lauren, so I scrapped it. LOL I wonder how all of these children faired in school and later in life. Surely some must still be living? I am curious as well to surnames for these unique first names (would they be called Christian names?) would they be like, Moon? I went to college with a gal Ginger Moon, and yes, she was a ginger.

Aurelan is my favorite girl name. Merik is my favorite boy name.

Although you know Jayden is my favorite ;o)

I could totally see everyone mistaking “Lorne” for “Lauren,” at least in the U.S. (Perhaps less often in Canada…?)

The Next Generation – Riker’s Connecticut Newborn Session

With so much space travel news happening lately, I thought it fitting to share this session, in honor of The Final Frontier! And of course, it’s a studio newborn session. Once I photograph a session in my Greenwich, Connecticut studio space, I find it hard to forget about for awhile! I guess I’m going to have to face it – my professional life revolves around miniature humans and, well, I’m here for it. Follow me into the Great Beyond because this is one studio newborn session that will be sure to put a smile on your face. An out-of-this-world smile, if I may say so.

Let’s start with Riker’s solo images, shall we? My clients always come up with the most amazing baby names and Riker was no exception. How adorable is his Star Trek: The Next Generatio n inspired name? And what kid wouldn’t want to tell their friends that they’re named after Captain Picard’s first officer?! I think I can say I fully endorse a solid, fandom-inspired name! Yes!

This was such a fun setup, and so simple and contemporary per mom’s wishes. I love that Erica took this as an opportunity to update their family photos, and also to get some solo pictures of big brother Wyatt. Over the past year, so many families just didn’t have the time or opportunity to update their family portraits. Needless to say, Erica and David are big Star Trek fans and, as I mentioned above, used Star Trek: The Next Generation as the inspiration for Riker’s name! I am feeling so inspired to go search for all the cute “geeky” baby names now. What a wonderful way to show off your family’s personality!

Of course, the lighting in my studio didn’t disappoint. I’m obsessed with how wonderfully this space performs for me, for each and every session. It is absolutely wonderful! And I love the fawny backdrop I used for that first set of images, that went along with mom’s contemporary décor and added a pop of texture to Riker’s newborn gallery.

The studio lighting created the perfect environment for some family newborn pictures. I know I say that all the time, but it’s true! Those tones are so gorgeous and I adore them.

🚀 Baby-naming Drama: Mom-to-be Wants Star Trek-inspired Name, Dad Freaks Out! 😱

Baby-naming can be a fun and exciting time for expecting parents, but it can also lead to some serious disagreements. One mom-to-be (33F) found herself in a heated debate with her husband after suggesting they name their unborn son after a Star Trek character. She's a big fan of the series, especially Deep Space Nine, and fell in love with the name Julian, inspired by Dr. Julian Bashir.
