Testimonials
What our clients say.
This driver chap is just great. Every morning the bus is a nickel. The floor washed. He is a humble man who has a good report with the clients as well. He is conscious and concerned about their welfare and not in a self-elevator way. Genuine.
Thomas was an absolute pleasure to work with. He mingles with the guests and gets involved. Would love to work with him again!
Professional Guide
I have received a excellent report from the tour leader and group. No complaints! All very positive. God is so gracious and kind. Thank you!
Kyani Tours & Safaris
On a journey in luxury like no other.
The Honeybadger and the Honeyguide live in a symbiotic relationship. The Honeybird locates the bees’ nest but is too weak to break the comb apart. He then tracks down the tough-skinned Honeybadger to do the hard work for him. The spontaneous trust and cooperation between these two creatures dates back ages, so the badger follows the bird. The Honeybadger breaks open the comb, feasts on the honey, but leaves enough for the Honeyguide.
In appreciation of the characteristics of these two fascinating creatures, the idea behind the brand of Kyani Tours and Safaris was born.
With years of experience in the transport industry, we really do have the expertise to offer you top-of-the-range vehicles for unforgettable safari experiences. Our safari vehicles offer luxury and semi-luxury comfort with off-road capabilities no matter how harsh, rugged or remote the terrain.

Camping is possibly the best way to fully appreciate Namibia’s wild places. Your senses come alive when you spend the night out in nature. You’ll tune into the sounds and smells of the bush, and even the sunrise might appear more magical when you come out of your tent with bird chorus all around. Regular campers know that already, but even if you’ve never camped before, you might want to consider a camping safari in Namibia. After all, you’ll know that all your needs will be taken care of by a team of professionals.

6 Questions About Namibia Camping Safaris
Answered by
Ariadne van zandbergen.
What are the pros and cons of a Namibia camping safari?
“Namibia is equally well equipped for camping and lodge safaris, and there are pros and cons to both. If you like getting back to basics, camping is a great choice. It certainly is the most budget-friendly way to get around the country. Many campsites are in excellent locations and in some cases, they offer the only practical or affordable way to stay inside the parks and reserves. This can give you a real advantage in being able to get out on early game drives or getting to scenic highlights, such as Sossusvlei, at sunrise. A camping safari is a great adventure and an opportunity to get close to nature. Eating dinner around a fire and sleeping under canvas are experiences you will cherish forever. The bush doesn’t go to sleep when the sun sets. You’ll be amazed at the range of animal noises you’ll hear in your tent at night. However, camping isn’t for everybody. You will be more comfortable when staying in lodges and camps. Luckily, there are plenty of lodge tours available, even for those traveling on a budget. A nice lodge stay can be part of the experience too, and so is the wining and dining offered at most places.”
What facilities can I expect in the campsites?
“Namibian campsites are usually equipped with ablution blocks (mostly communal, but in some cases private) and food-preparation areas. You can usually choose a campsite with or without electricity supply. There is often a small shop selling basics, as well as popular items, such as braai packs (a selection of meat to barbeque) and charcoal. Some campsites in park rest camps or on hotel grounds might also offer hotel facilities, such as a restaurant or swimming pool, to campers. Most campgrounds are fenced and child-friendly. Take note though that wilderness and some community campsites have very limited or no facilities at all. These aren’t usually used on standard tours. Namibia is a great country for a camping safari. Due to the dry climate, conditions are usually ideal. There are many campsites spread around the country, especially in all parks and reserves and near established tourist attractions.”
How much will this safari cost?
“The price of a 7-day camping safari in Namibia starts at about US$1,150 per person. This is only a guideline as there are several factors determining the cost. Namibia camping tours are mostly shared group tours. The group size can influence the price of the tour. Tours aimed at big groups often travel in large trucks. You might be allocated some camp duties, such as pitching your own tent and cooking. Smaller group tours are usually of a higher standard and a bit pricier. Private camping tours are available, but are less popular. Shorter Namibia packages, such as 3-day Etosha National Park or Sossusvlei tours, start at about US$400 per person.”
Is it possible to do a safari in Namibia where only some nights are spent camping?
“In some cases, a safari itinerary consists of some nights camping and some nights spent in the comfort of a guesthouse, lodge or hotel. This might simply be for logistical reasons. For instance, flight arrival times and road travel often dictate that the first and/or last night of a camping safari is spent in an urban hotel. This can be an enjoyable interlude, offering an opportunity for a good night’s sleep and a bath after a long flight, as well as allowing you to reorganize your luggage. For similar reasons you might want to spend your last night in comfort too. There might be other reasons for mixing it up. Some people like the experience of a few nights camping, but wouldn’t want to spend the whole trip sleeping in a tent. In many cases, however, it is about getting you to stay in the best locations. Where it pays to be inside the park, camping is often the only affordable option. But when visiting towns or other places of interest, a lodge stay is often more convenient. Your tour operator has the experience to put together the best combinations according to your preferences and budget.”
Is a self-drive camping safari in Namibia recommended?
“If you like a certain degree of independence and you’re not a fan of group tours, a self-drive safari might be perfect for you. Self-drive is a popular option in Namibia. Not only is Namibia a very safe country, but the roads are generally very good and campsites have great facilities. For obvious reasons, self-drive tours are usually more budget-friendly than similar guided private tours. However, while heading out unguided is a great adventure, consider that a guide brings a lot of knowledge and experience to the safari. They tend to be excellent animal spotters too, so your chances of seeing lots of animals are better on a guided trip. Several operators specializing in self-drive safaris can provide you with a reliable vehicle and camping gear (a rooftop tent is very popular). They can help you set up the trip, make all the bookings and offer 24/7 roadside assistance.”
Is a Namibia camping trip safe?
“Camping in Namibia is very safe. Most campsites are fully fenced, so no dangerous animals can move around the tents. There are snakes and scorpions around, but encounters are extremely rare. It is, however, recommended to keep your tent closed. There are very few insects in the dry environment and malaria isn’t much of a concern either. It is restricted to the north of the country and even there it is only a small to medium risk in the Wet season from October to May. Last but not least, crime against visitors is very rare in Namibia. And if you ever encounter any problems, the friendly Namibian people will be more than happy to assist you.”

Start Windhoek
Ends windhoek.
Day 1 | Windhoek – Gamsberg
Distance approx. 150 km; driving time approx. 2-3 hours
Windhoek – Gamsberg
Your adventurous 10-day Namibia camping safari starts in Windhoek where you will meet your guide in the morning. On the first leg of the journey, you will travel to Gamsberg. Gamsberg is a prominent table mountain in the Hakos mountains, south-west of Windhoek. High up on the Gamsberg Pass you will find your campsite for the night. After setting up camp, take a moment to relax and take in the moment. In the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding area on a tour together with your guide. Look out for mountain zebras, Oryx antelopes and kudus and enjoy the fantastic views of the wild mountains. In the evening, you can look forward to a delicious campsite dinner and the starry night sky. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 2 | Gamsberg – Sesriem
Distance approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 3-4 hours
Gamsberg – Sesriem
After a hearty breakfast and the packing up of the camp, your journey continues south through beautiful farm land. As so often in Namibia, today the journey is the destination. The bumpy and bendy approach road to the next mountain pass will reward you with views from the spectacular Spreetshoogte Pass, one of the most beautiful in the country. From the view point you will have magnificent views across the Namib Desert at your feet. You continue downhill to the plains until you pass Solitaire and reach your campsite in Sesriem. In the afternoon, you will visit Sesriem Canyon which was formed over millions of years ago by the Tsauchab River. On a hike, you can explore the impressive rock formations of the canyon. Spend the evening sitting around a crackling campfire, before falling asleep in your tent.
Day 3 | Sesriem – Sossusvlei – Rostock Ritz
Sesriem – sossusvlei – rostock ritz.
Today, you rise earlier than the sun. While it’s still dark outside, you make your way towards Sossusvlei so by the time the sun rises, you find yourself surrounded by the dunes of the Namib Desert. Sip your tea or coffee with some rusks and watch the sun grow bigger behind the dunes, colouring them in a fascinating chase of light and shadow. Afterwards, you visit the famous Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei. The contrast between the white Vleis, the rust-red dunes and the dark blue sky makes for impressive memories and photographs. Back at camp, you rejuvenate with an extensive brunch. Once camp is packed up, you continue to Rostock Ritz at the edge of the Namib Desert. You can spend the rest of the afternoon at your leisure. Enjoy the beautiful views across this untouched landscape and the solitude of this secluded place. You will spend the night in your tent.
Day 4 | Rostock Ritz – Swakopmund
Distance approx. 250 km; driving time approx. 3 hours
Rostock Ritz – Swakopmund
At sunrise, you should definitely go for a walk. There is nothing more enchanting than to let your gaze wander across the seemingly endless and solitary landscape in the light of the early morning hours, feeling absolute freedom. On your return, your guide welcomes you back with breakfast. You continue to the coastal town of Swakopmund at the Atlantic Ocean and swap nature for civilisation – just for a short while. In the afternoon, you explore Swakopmund on a city tour. Swakopmund is known as the German city of Namibia; you are reminded of the German colonial time on many corners – you will recognise the German language, cuisine and architecture, including the train station and court house. Have dinner in one of the many restaurants (at your own cost). You spend the night in the cosy Organic Stay Guesthouse.
Day 5 | Swakopmund – Brandberg
Distance approx. 300 km; driving time approx. 4-5 hours
Swakopmund – Brandberg
After breakfast, you leave Swakopmund, heading towards Cape Cross and its seal colony, one of the largest in the world. Seal next to seal as far as the eye can see – a true spectacle on land and sea. Along a beautiful route, you continue inland to Brandberg mountain. You set up camp under shade-giving trees in the dry river bed of Ugab River. In the afternoon, a local guide takes you on a casual hike to the well-known rock painting of the “White Lady”. Back at camp, relax and take a nap. Keep a look out for visitors – now and then desert elephants cross the area. Another eventful day comes to a close at the campfire. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 6 | Brandberg – Palmwag
Brandberg – palmwag.
You reach the Petrified Forest before lunch time. Be prepared to be amazed by the petrified trunks which are more than 200 million years old. Take a closer look at the Welwitschia plant and the Organ Pipes, ancient pillars of basalt, you find here. Your destination for today is Palmwag, an oasis of palm trees at Uniab River in north-west Damaraland. Take a quick dip in the pool before you go on a game drive around the 5,000 square kilometre large private concession area. The flat hills and rare plants look magnificent in the afternoon light. Plenty of wildlife is at home here, among them Oryx antelopes, kudus, ostriches, jackals and hyenas. With a little bit of luck, you might even spot a lion, the rare black rhino or desert elephants. Enjoy a sundowner drink and watch the sunset before heading back to camp. For a change, you have dinner at a restaurant – you can look forward to a delicious menu. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 7 | Palmwag – Etosha National Park
Distance approx. 200 km; driving time approx. 2-3 hours
Palmwag – Etosha National Park
Along the picturesque Grootberg Pass you reach Grootberg Plateau. You stop at the viewpoint to enjoy the spectacular views across the Klip River Valley. Continue to the world-renowned Etosha National Park, one of the most popular national parks in Southern Africa and the safari highlight of your 10-day Namibia camping safari. The park is home to hundreds of mammals, birds and reptiles. Entering through the Galton Gate the search for the wild animals begins. You set up camp at Olifantsrus Camp. From a raised platform, you can watch animals at the watering hole below which is very popular with elephants. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 8 | Etosha National Park
The day starts early with a cup of coffee or tea and rusks. The cool early morning hours are the best time to go on game drives and you are out and about at sunrise, scouting the west of the park for elephants, rhinos, giraffes, the rare black-faced impala, lions and cheetahs. You stop at watering holes and with a bit of luck you can spot elephants drinking and taking a bath. You return to camp for a hearty breakfast. You continue to Okaukuejo where you spend the next two nights. While on the road, you have plenty of opportunities to stop for wildlife sightings. In the evening, you can spot wildlife at the illuminated watering hole which is a popular hangout for many of the park’s animals, making it a great spot for observing and taking photos. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 9 | Etosha National Park
Another day of exciting game drives and wildlife sightings in Etosha National Park begins. Together with your guide you go on extensive game drives in the morning and afternoon. Most of the time is spent scouting for elephants, rhinos and giraffes, different kinds of antelopes and other wildlife near the water holes. With a bit of luck, you can even see lions and leopards. You have the option to join a night game drive with a park ranger, spotting nocturnal animals. You spend the night in your tent.
Day 10 | Etosha National Park – Windhoek
Distance approx. 450 km; driving time approx. 5-6 hours
Etosha National Park – Windhoek
After a tasty breakfast, your last leg of the journey begins. On your way to Windhoek you have time to stop at a souvenir market in Okahandja. You can find handmade souvenirs, wood carvings, baskets and jewellery. During the course of the afternoon, you arrive in Windhoek where your 10-day Namibia camping safari will come to an end. Your guide takes you to your hotel in the city or the airport where you say your goodbyes.

We have booked multiple trips now with Cooldrive and had a very positive experience each time. The staff know a lot about motorhomes from the various brands. It is nice to be able to deal with people that are genuinely interested in the product and that have experienced what they are selling.
My family and me had an excellent experience we loved the vacation we had in Iceland. Very good site for comparing price and quality. It was my first time booking a camper van and it was with Cooldrive, it was smooth and easy and I had the best value for money after comparing many sites. The guy who served has spent time with us on how we can we use the vehicle and gave us useful tips. We will use Cooldrive again for our next trip to USA.
Professional and hassle free service. The staff is great integrity and dealt with us swiftly, effectively and wholly to my satisfaction. I would have no hesitation in booking with Cooldrive again or recommending them to others.

Last Update Feb 2023 by RVRentaCampervan Editorial Team
A premier destination for safaris, Namibia is perfect for hiring a 4×4 campervan enabling you to stay out overnight in the African wilderness! But it’s not just lush greenery; Namibia has a varied topography, including canyons, deserts and savannah. Self-drive safaris are becoming increasingly popular, with plenty of self contained camper vans available.
Visitors flock to Namibia from all over the world to enjoy the wilderness. Roads are generally in good condition, but care should be taken when driving. All the nature reserves and game parks have campervan sites; however, facilities vary from place to place. Namibia is compact and easy to navigate on your own.
Campervan & 4×4 Camping Vans Namibia
The vehicles offered for rent are mostly 4-wheel drive campers built on the Toyota Hilux platform. These vehicles are essential for traversing game parks as the roads are often unsealed, gravel, or sandy, making travel difficult for vehicles with two wheels. Some of the vehicles come equipped with roof tents or camping gear, but not all. This will be clearly stated in the vehicle description, for example the Toyota Hilux Double Cab Manual 2.4L offered by Caprivi Camper Hire comes without Camping equipment
Great Choice of Campervans from Leading Namibian Suppliers
Top rental suppliers in Namibia include :
- Caprivi Camper Hire
- Britz Campervan Rentals ZA
- Bobo Campers ZA
Britz Campervans Namibia
Britz Campervan Namibia specialises in 4×4 campervan hire in Namibia and their range of 4×4 camping vans are all fully equipped for Safari life. The rigged fleet of vehicles can easily negotiate the local terrain, getting you safely to your caping locations.
Choice of Pickup locations in Namibian Suppliers
The wide range of suppliers that offer 4×4 camping vans and motorhomes is extensive, and the choice of location is also extensive. Whilst Windhoek International Airport is the most popular pickup location, you can choose from the following list.
Divundu, Epupa, Farm Homestead, Gobabis, Grootfontein, Katima Mulilo, Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, Namutoni, Okahandja, Okaukuejo, Okomitundu, Omaruru, Ondangwa, Opuwo, Oshakati, Otavi, Otjiwarongo, Palmwag, Rundu, Sesriem, Swakopmund, Tsumeb, and Walvis Bay
Recommended campervan rental drives in Namibia
Walvis bay:.
Driving along the B2 highway from Windhoek to Swakopmund and Walvis Bay is a must. The coastal towns and beaches here are beautiful. The road is a straightforward drive along the coast. Visitors will find two campervan grounds to choose from in Swakopmund: Swakopmund Municipal Rest Camp and Sophia Dale Base Camp
The Caprivi Strip:
Head north from Otavi towards Caprivi Game Park, known for its wildlife. This a small sliver of Namibia which juts into Botswana, Angola and Zambia. Campervan sites are available on the edge of the game park, such as Kwando and Namutoni.
Desert drive:
exploring the naturally beautiful Namib Desert is a must. Encompassed within Namib-Naukluft National Park, the desert is located southwest of Windhoek. Campervan sites are aplenty and visitors can overnight at Hoodia Desert Camp or Camp Gecko Desert Lodge.
Driving a RV rental in Namibia
Road network:.
Roads in the urban areas are in good condition; even in remote areas, most roads are paved. However, petrol station can be sparse and carrying an extra fuel tank is a good idea. Mobile phone coverage outside urban areas can be patchy.
We have teamed up with the top camper companies in Namibia that include KEA Campers Namibia, Compass, Bobo Campers, Explorer Safaris and Britz 4 wheel Drive Rentals.
Speed limits:
Urban roads: 60kphProvincial roads: 100kphNational roads and motorways: 120kph
Alcohol limits:
0.5 per cent; this is lower than in the UK and is enforced primarily in the cities.
Driving is on the left-hand side and seatbelts must be worn at all times, by all passengers. All roads signs are in English and easy to follow. Unlike in other African countries, drivers in Namibia tend to be courteous. Theft is an issue, so always drive with your doors locked.

Self Drive Namibia & Botswana – Safari Camper Adventures
Self drive namibia, botswana, victoria falls – wild trails, wild animals, wild water.
My police escort was nodding off in the passenger seat. Her head kept dropping then jerking back, the way it does when you’re falling asleep while sitting up. Each drop was a little deeper than the last.
I didn’t know how she could sleep with the 4×4 bouncing and squirming over the gravel as we raced through the wildlife reserve at double the speed limit , a rooster tail of white dust hanging in the air behind us.
Her hand relaxed its grip on the AK47 assault rifle that was leaning against her leg and the next bump caused the weapon to slide down into the footwell with a clatter. Woken, she stretched out and yawned. I still couldn’t quite believe I had an armed policewoman in my car.
I often take a drone on my travels. They’re great for photography from a completely new perspective. Unfortunately they’re banned from Namibia’s Etosha national park so mine had been handed in to the police at the western gate.
They had promised to have it delivered to the eastern gate ready for my onward journey, but they forgot. A very friendly man called Moses, who was the head of the park rangers, had arranged for me to be allowed to drive the 150km across rough gravel trails all the way through the park to collect my drone, and 150km back again.
The condition was that I could only do this with the young policewoman armed with pistol and rifle accompanying me in order to comply with park rules.
300km is a long way and so she had pretty much ordered me to drive well over the speed limit so that we would make it back and out of the park before nightfall.
It’s the time like that when things haven’t gone according to plan that you get the best stories, but it was about to get better. We still had about 80 miles to go when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye.
I eased off the throttle as I looked again, trying to see what had caught my attention.
Something in the distance across the grass…
And then another!
I stopped the car and grabbed the camera. All the other animals on the plain — a couple of elephants, a lone zebra, and countless antelope and ostriches — stood motionless and watching intently as what I could now see were both lionesses just strolled about like they owned the place.
When I’d decided to have an adventure and self drive Namibia and Botswana, one of the biggest bucket-list dreams was to see big cats in the wild.
While planning, I spotted a place on the map called “Elephant Dance Village (abandoned due to lions)”. It’s hard not be excited by things like that.
The last couple of days in Etosha I’d had no luck, but there they were, just when I least expected it. It was thrilling and captivating. It was all too brief because I still had to return my policewoman to her home, but still… What a day!
We made it back and I continued to my next safari camp where you need staff escorts after dark because of the cheetahs and leopards… There’s no doubt Africa is thrilling, and if you really want a thrill then try driving through it in your own 4×4 and sleeping under the stars.
Self Drive South Africa
Arriving at Cape Town airport I was met by a rep from the car hire firm. This was not an ordinary hire car though.
A Ford Ranger 4×4 pickup, with rooftop tents, a long-range fuel tank, and fully equipped with water tank, fridge/freezer, gas cooker, camp chairs and table, solar panel, and even an awning to sit under on a sunny day.
With space inside for four adults, and two tents each with a double bed, I was going to have plenty of room to enjoy living in it for the next month.
Perfect to self drive Namibia, Botswana, onto Zimbabwe and Victoria Falls, and back through South Africa. You can find safari camper rental in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.
Namibia is the biggest draw, and if you only have a couple of weeks you might choose to base yourself there. If you do want to self drive Namibia, you can fly into Windhoek and rent a safari camper there.
If you want to self drive Botswana and Victoria Falls as well, then you can start in Cape Town or Windhoek, and travel overland.
The border crossings can be intimidating and time consuming, especially in Zimbabwe, but in Southern Africa they are well-used to tourists passing through in rented safari campers, and it’s actually quite easy to do.
It’s certainly nothing like the corrupt, aggressive, confusing, and expensive procedures you sometimes encounter if you’re travelling by motorcycle in Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Russia.
In Cape Town I quickly discovered that the outdoor lifestyle is extremely popular and had no trouble finding enormous shops full of every imaginable piece of camping gear.
I stocked the camper with a couple of boxes of South African red wine and enough Biltong to feed an army, filled the fridge with Kudu sausages and Ostrich burgers, then set off north into Namaqua, hoping to find some off-road trails and bush camping.
I was starting to get used to the 4×4, which I had nicknamed “The Beast”, but was a little nervous at the thought of making my way into the wilderness.
I left town early, knowing that the first day on the road in a strange vehicle with unfamiliar equipment was going to keep me busy. City suburbs had already given way to rolling hills and farmland by sunrise, and the next three hundred miles passed easily with little traffic.
I soon found my way onto some exhilarating trails through the bush and began to learn what off-road driving is all about, before finding an easy camping spot and throwing a Boerewors sausage on the stove.
The camp-fire would have to wait for another day because I had to get to grips with erecting the tent (it was up in under two minutes!) and operating the gas and the all the other bits and pieces.
Darkness came on very quickly leaving just me and The Beast and a million freaky noises. On that first night, every distant animal noise had me jumping like watching a horror film, but the tent was so very comfortable.
The total absence of artificial light gave me an ink black sky with the milky way and a zillion stars interrupted only by the silhouette of the mountains surrounding my own personal campsite.
Self Drive Namibia
Border crossings in some parts of the world can be an intimidating, time-consuming, and sometimes very expensive hassle.
I’ve done a lot of overland travel, and I’ve seen it all. Bribes. Threats. Scams. Guns. The crossing from South Africa into Namibia was better organised and more friendly than any other I’d seen.
I’m always anxious on the approach but pulling away on the other side is a joyful blast of freedom, especially when you’re faced with the empty desert of Namibia.
I made my way to the Fish River Canyon. It can’t compete with the Grand Canyon when it comes to take-your-breath-away spectacle, but it wins hands down when it comes to atmosphere, thanks to the Martian landscape you have to pass through to get there.
That night’s campsite would be at the Canyon Roadhouse with its unique diner full of old vehicles. With country and western on the stereo, I enjoyed a glass of Namibian Erongo Mountain Shiraz and an Oryx steak.
Apparently in Namibia service is always with a smile and a “glass” of the house red is half a bottle of sensational wine. I don’t know what on Oryx is but judging by that steak it must be the size of an elephant.
Delicious, in great surroundings which looked even better as darkness fell and candles were lit, and it cost me about a tenner.
