Thule are better known for roof racks, and in the bike world for their roof-, towball- and hatch-mounted bike carriers. They bought the design for the Pack 'n Pedal rack from New Zealand product design company Freeload and have developed a range of panniers around it, some of which we'll be reviewing over the next few weeks.

The rack is made from aluminium and glass-fiber reinforced polypropylene, assembled with stainless steel bolts. It comes with a selection of struts that should allow it to attach to virtually any bike. We used the shorter struts for a fairly standard road bike, and the medium-length ones to get the rack level on a smaller hybrid.

The very longest struts will likely work for the very low stays on some suspension mountain bikes, but we didn't try that. We'd be surprised if you can find a standard double diamond frame the Tour rack won't fit, though you might run into trouble if you're running tyres fatter than 2.5 inches wide. As this is a website mostly about road bikes, that shouldn't be a problem for most of you.

The ratchet strap attachment system works well - much better than you'd expect from looking at it. It really does provide a platform stable enough to hang up to 18kg of luggage off (25kg if you strap it on top).

To fit the rack, you thread each of the four straps through the mechanism and then tighten it up with the supplied 5mm ball-end Allen key. Thule also supplies a security release key to loosen the rack, so a passing low-life can't steal the rack. The key has an offset pin to release the ratchet mechanism, and as far as we can tell it's unique to the Pack 'n Pedal rack, so keep in somewhere safe.

The main selling point of this rack is its versatility and the only situation we found where it ran into trouble was fitting bikes with cables down the seat-stays like some cyclo-cross bikes. If that's your bike, try before you buy to make sure the cables and straps don't do battle.

The rack works best with Thule's own range of panniers. It is possible to use other panniers, but you might run into problems with the fatness of the tubes (Ortlieb), or the solid plastic platform that gets in the way of the hook release (Carradice). Thule sells a pair of side frames that allow you to use 'virtually any type of pannier' and that also have a second rail so you can mount the panniers nearer the ground for a lower center of gravity.

These will cost you another £25 on top of the £85 you've paid for the rack (£22.49 and £76.95 if you shop around). That's the same retail price as the stainless steel Tubus Cosmo. The Cosmo weighs 730g, against the 1420g of the Tour rack with side frames, and will carry twice as much. Tubus offer adapters to coax a rack on to a frame without eyelets too, though Thule's way of doing things is undeniably more elegant.

If you haven't got braze-ons, or your bike has some other awkwardness that makes fitting a regular rear rack difficult or impossible, the Thule Pack 'n Pedal Tour rack is a great way to carry luggage. It's well-made, the design is clever and it's surprisingly solid on the bike.

Having said that, it might be worth thinking about why your frame doesn't have braze-ons: it might not be designed to carry loads, and you might run into issues around stability under load and heel clearance. If you do have braze-ons, the Thule rack is still a viable option, but most regular four-bolt racks will be cheaper, weigh less and will be more stable.

It's a good solution for running a rack on a bike without braze-ons, though it's expensive and heavy.

The aluminium and polypropylene components look well made and are assembled using stainless steel bolts.

Does the rack provide a sturdy platform that stays put and allows you to hang panniers off of it? Yes. Much better than you'd think from looking at it.

I have not had this rack for nearly long enough to comment on long-term durability through experience. Having said that, it's certainly well made and I would expect it to last you a long time, provided you keep all the bolts tightened.

There are lots of comments on the internet from people who question the durability of a 'plastic' the rack on longer tours. Mostly from people who haven't actually seen or used the rack. One review I read was from a lady who had used a Sport on the front and a Tour on the back for 5 months through the Andes and had no problems.

You don't get much change from a kilo, more than 150 grams heavier than the standard Blackburn EX2 (and twice as expensive). If you want to use non-Thule panniers, you'll need the sideframes which add another 430 grams.

Nothing particularly comfortable or uncomfortable about it.

At £85 RRP (£10 discounts can be found online), twice as expensive as the Blackburn EX2. About a tenner cheaper than the Tubus Logo rack. Significantly heavier than both, but more versatile. Bear in mind you'll more than likely need the optional sideframes (another £25) if you want to use non Thule Pack 'n Pedal panniers.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

It's a luggage rack and it does the things a luggage rack does. However, it's a shame there isn't a mounting point for a rear light and the full plastic platform construction on the top can make it difficult to release certain panniers. The Carradice C-hook system proved troublesome for me. The struts have a large diameter which rules out certain panniers, like the Ortlieb classic front pannier for example. The optional side frame (£25 RRP) may well sort some of these problems out - we're testing a set at the moment.

Although it's billed to work with any pannier, that's not really the case without the sideframes.

Did you enjoy using the product? It worked well enough, but I didn't enjoy using it more or less than any other rack I've used.

Would you consider buying the product? No. Having used it, I'll go back to using a traditional rack. If I wanted to fit a rack to my mountain bike (which doesn't have braze-ons) though, I would definitely consider it.

Would you recommend the product to a friend? If they need to put a rack on a bike without the necessary braze-ons, then yes.

Anything further to say about the product in conclusion?

The rack works better than you'd expect from looking at it, but works best with the Pack 'n Pedal panniers. Try before you buy if you plan to use your own.

Here is the Thule pack and pedal pannier/rack system on a Cannondale 2014 CAAD8 105.

I am very surprised at the result. It took me hours of figuring out the ratchet system. But I sorted out the ratchet system it is and proves to be a very strong rack. The rubber oval cleat cushions the rack against your seat stays and this also prevents slippage. It is a good product and very clever.

I have tested myself this bike rack and I think that this 85 pounds is too much for what it offers. It looks good, the brand is there but lacks in enginering quality, bike racks priced so high shouldnt slip on the frame.

I experienced slippage also until I realised I wasn't mounting it properly. The oval rubbers are placed between the seat stays and the rack. The straps are fitted as follows. The instructions are not clear so it takes some working out.

1. Work out where the rack is best suited 2. Prepare oval ring and short end of strap to fit between the frame and the rachet system. 3. Once the ratchet system is resting on the oval rubber wrap the strap around the frame and then under the ratchet mechanism. 4. Take the rest of the strap and feed it through the ratchet system. 5. Use the hex key provided to tighten it. As you tighten it the long strap finds around the fitting and becomes shorter.

I struggled initially and took me hours to figure it out. If you need help don't ring Thule write to me and I offer you assistance.

The problem with the Ortliebs I tried was that, without the side panels, the aluminium tube is too fat for the Ortlieb lower hook to go around it.

With the side panels (which I didn't have to test) I expect it's no problem at all.

Currently I use it on a steel frame but still use the textile tape as anti-slip.

I've got a set of these from Freeload (the NZ company who came up with them, before Thule bought them out) Couple more points:

- The front rack will not fit on a bike with canti brakes - the wire yoke of the brake will get in the way. Probably a consideration for anything other than discs, really

- unusual rear stay designs can also be a problem; if you don't have straight stays, you might not have a section to fit this on

- you should have a shake out ride before you set off; it's quite easy to have these set too loose, particularly if the straps get wet. Bring a ball-ended hex key, large enough to get some leverage. (ie not your multitool)

- my ortliebs fit this fine, not sure what the problem is there? (but yes you need the side panels for panniers)

- What I mainly use them for is bikepacking, ie light mtb touring offroad; I wasn't using panniers, but had strapped drybags on these front and rear. Rock solid, plenty of places to attach straps to. Weight not really an issue, my bags are much heavier than the racks.

oh dear, I have a few Thule products which, although not cheap, have proved their worth. But honestly, in excess of £100 for a rack setup on a bike not designed to carry those loads? Sounds like a failed entry from The Apprentice.

Used Once - Don't Buy

Doesn't hold, slips down and wears down on brand new bike tyres as well as the under side of the plastic rack itself. I had to stop constantly to try and reposition it. The small rubber parts barely hold in place once the rack is off, and do not come with anything to store them in, subsequently one of them fell off when I took the rack off and I was unable to find where it went. Will never use again. Please do not buy this it ruined my weekend for myself and for my friends.

Not Thule Quality

The good- Cool design and you are able to adjust to about any configuration. Relatively simple, but it mounts easily. The bad- The rack doesn't stay in place. Maybe because I'm using this on a road bike with smaller seat stays? I've had to use gorilla tape on my seat stay to create a bench for the rack attachment points to sit on to keep the rack from sliding down. I'm not even loading much into the pannier. Which is the other problem, twice the Thule Shield pannier went into my rear spokes brining me to an immediate stop. There's nothing to keep the bag from swinging into the spokes when you get a decent bump. Just not a great design.

New Bike Tour Rack

I have been using this new rack for several weeks and I must say I am definitely impressed. My new bike came without any front braze-ons so needing a front rack, I did not know what I was going to do.. The design is ingenious, Fits perfectly.I check it often before rides and it stays stable and secure. Thank you Thule.

Looks good and it works as well

A Super Trifecta Solution For Dirt Bike Riders

This Thule solution to carry bags and baskets is a sure winner in my books. I have a Surron Light Bee X Dirt Bike which I plan to use to make deliveries by where I live. I will note that I did have to remove my front fender in order for this work but that doesn’t bother me as I have tried to make the bike look as little as possible as a Dirt Bike considering regulations by where I live. However if your looking for a solution for carrying bags with your dirt bike- than look no further as this is it. I’ll be honest I did my research and there’s not many choices that work with Dirt Bikes as the manufacturers don’t make or market them for Dirt Bike riders. I am grateful to Thule for making a solution that works hands down the best in carrying bags and packages.

Rack is a nightmare to take on and off. Lost straps because it’s hard to set up the correctly and no spare parts are available. I’d avoid unless this is your last and only solution.

Texas to California with No Issues

I bought two of these Racks and two sets of the Thule Shield Panniers for my Houston to Sacramento BikePacking trip. The installation was not "Easy" due to the infinitely adjustability of the racks. But after adjusting, they were both sitting perfectly level and balanced. Along the way I removed the racks so that I could ride some trails. The removal and remounting was very easy since the adjustments had already been set. I had 30-35 pounds on each rack and I never had issues with the racks sliding or slipping. I would recommend this rack for anyone who wants a solid rack that is well worth the investment.

Thule Epos bike rack review – towbar-mounted, e-MTB-rated carrier

The swedish rack specialists have created a bike rack that is extremely hard to top.

Bike Perfect Verdict

With a folding base and tons of adjustability, bike racks don't get much easier to use than this – despite a hefty 23kg weight. The Epos is well designed for e-bikes, but with a maximum load of 60kg, the three-bike rack isn't rated to carry three full-fat e-MTBs.

Thule has a wide range of bike carriers for all kinds of vehicles. I've been testing the Thule Epos – a towbar/hitch carrier that's substantial enough to handle bikes up to 30kg, so has plenty of capacity for even the heftiest electric mountain bikes.

The three-bike version here comes with inbuilt rear lights, but there is also a two-bike model – both are available without lights for a lower RRP. My test Epos carrier comes with a pretty hefty $1,099.99 / £1,099.99 / €1,099.99 price tag, so is it worth the investment, and is it the best bike hitch rack you can buy?

Design and specifications

With a maximum load capacity of 60kg, the Epos needs to be sturdily built and so it is with an aluminum paneled, steel tubed base and arms with steel lowers and aluminum upper sections. The resulting overall weight is 23.2kg for the three-bike model, which is about the same as the average full-power electric mountain bike . To make maneuvering the rack easier, Thule have added two small wheels to the heavier end.

Unlike most tow hitch racks, the Epos is foldable which makes fitting it in place much easier than its rivals (more on that later). Once locked in place (with a key that also locks the rack's arm straps), it's also tiltable which enables access to the rear of your vehicle with the rack still attached. The 'something-able' functions don't end there though – as the three arms used to secure the bikes are tiltable and extendable, with moveable and lockable heads. Steel-reinforced ratchet straps on the arms secure the bikes in place, along with the ratchet straps on each wheel.

While the three-bike Epos is capable of carrying 30kg bikes, the rack's 60kg maximum load means only carrying two full-fat e-MTBs – as weights are around 25kg per bike. The two-bike version has the same weight limit, so I'd make an educated guess that the 60kg maximum comes from how much weight you can safely suspend on your tow hitch.

The model I'm testing came with a full electrical pack. This plugged into my towbar electrics via a 13-pin plug giving full rear lighting on the rack.

Performance and use

I've used a number of different bike tow hitch racks over the years, there are two main benefits over strap on racks that hook into your vehicle's rear shut lines: The lower position makes it easier to lift your bikes on and off, and by not being directly attached to your vehicle's body, your paintwork is less likely to get damaged. However, the big drawback with most hitch racks is that you have to bend down and reach forward over the rack to mount them to your tow ball. It's a manual handling fail that has given me a sore back many times.

I've been testing the Thuke Epos for a year now and the biggest advantage for me is its folding base which means you can fix the rack in place without breaking any safe lifting rules. It's easy to bend down next to the tow hitch to engage the handle on the rack's lockable coupling.

A low base height when fitted to my VW T5 Transporter van meant I had the option of rolling bikes onto the rack a wheel at a time when mounting – rather than having to lift them into place. While that's not such a big deal for conventional bikes, it definitely made life easier when loading heavy e-MTBs. While I've not tested it here, Thule also sells an additional loading ramp for the Epos for $59.99 / £59.99 / €59.99, which looks like it would make things easier still and the ramp can be neatly stowed away in the center of the rack when not in use.

The adjustability of mounting arms makes securing bikes in place as straightforward as it gets. The extending length and tiltable heads are really useful and the rubberized concave indents in the heads means bikes are less likely to move around and scuff frame finishes – I've had none of this during testing. Thule states 25cm gaps between bikes, but that is actually measured from the center of each wheel slot, so the actual distance is more like 18cm. This still gives more room than most for fitting though and multiple bikes don't rub up against each other either – as long as you're careful where you position pedals, bars, etc. Being able to lock the mounting straps in place on the heads gives a degree of security too, and while the steel strips running through the straps are by no means impregnable to would-be thieves, they're more resistant to cutting than non-reinforced versions.

When fitting longer bikes nearer to the stated maximum length of 135cm, there wasn't a huge amount of wriggle room, so I had to make sure I balanced the wheels so the overhang was even on both sides. Officially the max tire width is 3in, but I ran tires up to 3.5in with no problems – you can upgrade to 5in tire capacity with the optional Thule XXL Fatbike Wheel Straps.

It's easy to tilt the rack for boot access, just press on the metal foot plate below the license plate. But while it works well for hatchback cars, there still wasn't enough clearance to fully open the tailgate on my van. I've had the same issue with all the tiltable tow hitch racks I've used though, so it's not just an issue here.

The Epos is heavier than most rivals and the trolley wheels are designed to make moving the rack easier. However, I found myself needing to bend to the side to wheel it along which felt a bit awkward, so just carrying was actually less of a strain.

There's no doubt that Thule has created an excellent bike carrier in the Epos, it's definitely the best I've ever tested, and ignoring its hefty weight, in terms of ease of use and secure mounting, there's nothing that can touch it. 

It's also well designed for transporting e-MTBs, though the 60kg weight limit on the three-bike version means that you'll need to check your bike weights if you're looking to carry three e-MTBs. Three full-power bikes would overload it, but you may well be OK with a combination of light and/or midweight models.

These racks are designed to haul your pedaled possessions without a rattle; they make loading and unloading your bike easy. Our rack picks vary by mounting position, actuation of the rack for trunk access, and the number of bicycles they carry. But all are dependable options for your next two-wheeled adventure.

Type Of Hitch Bike Racks

Hitch racks fit into your vehicle’s receiver tube and come in three basic styles: hanging, tray, and vertical.

Hanging racks hold your bike, cradling its top tube and downtube on horizontal bars. These racks usually cost less and weigh less than tray and vertical racks, but they do not hold bikes as securely and have limited carrying capacity. Many contemporary mountain and aero road bikes cannot fit on these racks. Unless your budget is tight, we recommend tray or vertical-style bike racks for the best compatibility and ease of use.

Tray-type racks use a series of trays into which you rest your bike’s tires and are the go-to choice for most buyers. These racks swing out of the way or fold down for trunk or lift-gate access. Tray-style racks (like the Kuat Sherpa 2.0) typically are heavier but accommodate mountain bikes better than hanging variants (which secure the bike by its top tube). Per-bike weight limits vary between 35 and 100 pounds, and most of our picks have choices to fit 1.25- and 2-inch hitch receivers.

Vertical racks are a newer design and are most often used for transporting mountain bikes. These racks sometimes fit up to six (or even seven) bikes in an upright carrying configuration, minimizing how far the rack sticks off the back of your vehicle. Most are designed to enable easy bike loading and access to your trunk or tailgate. They come in front wheel, fork crown, and handlebar carrying styles. However, some types are unable to carry road bikes. Some are even rated up to 300-pound total load capacity. A vertical rack might be your best solution to haul more than two electric mountain bikes . Because these racks are robust (and carry many bikes), they also often cost more than hanging or tray racks, and most are only offered in 2” hitch versions.

Hitch Rack Features and Extras

Most hanging and tray hitch racks hold one or two bikes, although some can carry more with optional add-ons. Many vertical racks can hold six bikes. Some hitch racks feature integrated cable locks to secure bikes to racks and locking hitch pins to secure the rack to your car. The Küat NV 2.0 has an integrated repair stand , and the Yakima Holdup Evo has a built-in bottle opener for post-ride beer o’clock. We also included an accessory (at the end of our list) that allows non-pivoting racks to swing out of the way.

How We Tested

Our bike-crazed editors drove hundreds—in some cases, thousands—of miles with their bikes entrusted to these racks. We hauled road bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, and city bikes, as well as bikes with disc brakes, big wheels, fat tires, and more. We keep these racks on our vehicles for months, using and abusing them until we know what works and what doesn’t. We even put one to the “kid” test, giving an 11-year-old the responsibility of loading and unloading the bikes to see if he could do it without adult supervision (he had no problem). If we weren’t satisfied with a particular rack, we didn’t include it. So far, these hitch racks have earned their spots as the best.

You’re officially free to forget every complaint you’ve ever had about hitch racks. The Küat Sherpa 2.0 is sturdy and stylish as well as convenient and intuitive. Available for both 1.25- and 2-inch hitch sizes and in three colors, the Sherpa pivots up and down with ease via a large lever and fits two bikes (max: 40 pounds each, 47-inch wheelbase, 3-inch tires) on its lightweight aluminum platform (it also tilts down to get out of the way of your car’s hatch). Assembly is fairly simple (make sure you follow the directions when removing parts, as the packaging acts as an assembly fixture), and a hitch cam lets you hand-tighten the rack to the receiver for a secure connection. Loading bikes on the trays is a breeze: A ratcheting strap secures the rear wheel in its cradle, while an adjustable, hooked arm battens down the front. The entire system locks to your hitch, and a semi-integrated cable lets you lock your bikes to the rack. Tip: When unloading your bike, release the rear wheel before the front so you don’t inadvertently let your bike tip over and smash into your rear window (this may or may not have happened to one of our testers. 😬)

T2 Pro XTR 2

When first released over a decade ago, the T2 raised the bar for what riders expect from a hitch-mounted bike rack. Over the years, Thule updated the T2 to accommodate wider tires and different wheel sizes. Plus, it made the rack better looking and easier to operate. Topping the list of recent upgrades is a handle with a wide trigger that allows you, with a single hand, to raise and lower the rack (and dip it out of the way for access to rear hatches). Integrated cable locks keep your bikes from growing legs, and the rack’s arms have a wide, comfortable grip and slide easily to secure the front wheel, with tires up to 5 inches wide. Instead of using a bolt, the T2 secures to your hitch receiver with an expansion wedge that tightens with a locking knob. The system makes installing and removing the T2 easier (though it weighs 52 pounds, so you might still need an assist), but it’s not foolproof. The T2 is heavier and costs more than most racks, and the convenient features mean it requires a little more care. But the same was said when we moved from hardtails to full-suspension bikes , and few have looked back.

HR200Z Trail Rider

The Trail Rider is a great, lower-cost alternative to the premium racks on this list. It holds two bikes in fixed wheel mounts, secured with a single ratcheting arm that clamps down over the frame. The upright beam that holds the frame clamps folds back and out of the way for trunk access, which also came in handy for loading up two bikes: We could fold it down, set a bike on the rack closest to the car without having to lift it up and over the arm, lift the arm back up into place, and then position the second bike. When not in use, the rack can be folded up flush with the back of the car. It’s super sturdy—our tester drove from Philadelphia to Phoenix with a bike on the rack, and the lock on the securing arm let her comfortably leave bikes on the car in the hotel parking lots. The trade-off for a rack at this lower price has nothing to do with stability or strength, but adjustability: the bikes sit in a fixed location with minimal ability to adjust them away from each other if two bikes don't fit well together; though you can stagger the wheel cradles so the bars and saddles don’t interfere. But it accommodates wheelbase lengths up to 60 inches, tires up to three inches wide, and is appropriate for bikes that weigh up to 45 pounds.

Equip-D Double

1UP USA built a cult-like following with its industrial-looking racks that take a simplistic approach to securing your bike. Its two ratcheting arms clamp down on your wheels; there are no hooks, straps, or adjustments for different sizes or bases necessary. This model specifically features wider and taller arms to better accommodate 29-inch wheels and fat tires. The Equip-D’s pivot mechanism is smooth and a T-handle release positioned at the end of the hitch bar doesn’t require reaching through the rack to fold it up. Tiered trays allow bikes to sit closer together, and the rack rides high enough to be out of the way of most exhaust pipes .

Yakima StageTwo 1.25 Premium 4 Bike Tiered Adjustable Tray Hitch Bike Rack

The last thing you want to see in your rearview mirror as you hurtle down the road is thousands of dollars worth of bikes rattling behind your bumper. Thanks to an expanding-wedge design that secures the rack in your vehicle’s receiver hitch and locks in place with a theft-preventing thru-bolt, the NV 2.0 stayed wobble-free throughout our testing. A stout pivot lets you flip the rack up when you’re not hauling bikes, deploy it flat for when you are, or drop it to a 45-degree angle for easy access to trunks and pickup beds. Other nice features include integrated cable locks, a repair stand, and adjustable cradles offering better clearance for stacked bikes when loaded. The only hiccup we noticed is the ratcheting system can get gunked up, making it hard to remove bikes. We also found that as long as we paid attention to cleaning dirt and grime off the ratcheting system after driving on dirty or dusty roads, trouble was eliminated. The NV 2.0 is available for 1.25- and 2-inch receivers. Extras include a 20- and 24-inch wheel adaptor for $15, the $98 bike ramp , the $359 one-bike , or $598 two-bike add-ons (compatible with 2" versions only).

MHS (Modular Hitch System) 3-Bike Package

Saris’ latest offering is one of the most configurable hitch-mount systems available. Since this rack is sold as a Base with add-on bicycle or cargo basket attachments, you can build this rack to meet your carrying needs or budget.

For 2-inch receivers, Saris offers the Base in two sizes: 2+1 (up to three bikes or one bike and a cargo basket) or 3+1 (up to four bikes or two bikes and a basket). For 1-1/4” receivers, the 1+1 Base fits up to two bikes and cannot fit a basket.

The bike holder options are 1Up-style dual-wheel arms (MHS Duo) or a slightly less-expense single-arm holder (MHS Uno). Both options held bikes securely in our drive-testing, though the MHS Duo feels more robust (the bikes did not sway as much).

The rack holds bikes up to 80 pounds in the inboard position(s) but only to 35 lb. in the outer add-on (+1) spot. This may limit some riders’ choices if carrying multiple e-bikes or downhill/enduro rigs.

Commonly spotted in parking lots of mountain bike parks and trailheads at popular riding destinations, North Shore Rack pioneered and popularized vertical-style racks. The North Vancouver, British Columbia-based brand (hence the name North Shore) produces two, four, and six-bike capacity racks in folding and standard versions. Rated to hold up to 60 lb. per bike (300 lb. total), the NSR-6 securely carries downhill bikes and electric mountain bikes. Since the NSR holds the bike by the fork crown, it is not compatible with road bikes. The NSR adjusts to fit a range of vehicles and folds down when not loaded. If you carry lots of bikes for family mountain bike trips or a NICA team, this rack is an excellent option.

RambleRack Heavy Duty Hitch

For true off-road and Overlanding, you need a rack durable enough to handle anything thrown at it. Rig’d Supply’s RambleRack is purpose-built for off-road use. Fully customizable for your vehicle fitment or gear-carrying needs, the RambleRack hauls bikes up to 150 lb. (on-road use), tires up to 5” wide, and wheel sizes from 22” to 29”. We tested the Rig’d RambleRack paired with the UltraSwing and carried everything from lightweight road race bikes to heavyweight eMTBs without issue, flex, or sway in the rack.

Camber 2 Bike

The Camber 2 is a two-bike hanging rack that’s a great lower-cost alternative to pricer tray racks. Bikes are hung by two horizontal arms that cradle the top tube. Rubber brackets with straps keep the bikes from sliding back and forth, but they aren't held as securely as tray racks. That's inescapable with this style of rack. The Camber can be rotated back to allow for easy trunk access, and the arms are easily folded down when not in use. Unlike tray racks, which tend to be very heavy, at only 28 pounds the Camber 2 is light and easy to install quickly, making it a great option as both a permanent fixture on your vehicle and as a rack that you put on only when you need it. Thule recommends a maximum weight of 37.5 pounds for each bike, which makes it a poor choice for transporting electric bikes. It’s also not ideal for bikes with non-traditional diamond-shaped frames like some full suspension mountain bikes or bikes with step-through frames.
