Take a Chilling Stroll Through the Real Camp Crystal Lake From Friday the 13th

Adrienne King in Friday the 13th (1980).

While he hasn’t been seen onscreen since 2009, Jason Voorhees remains one of the horror film genre’s most iconic figures. The star of 10 Friday the 13th films as well as 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason , the boogeyman has slashed his way to infamy.

If you’re a die-hard Jason fan, now you can take a walking tour of his old stomping grounds—Camp Crystal Lake, the summer getaway that was host to some of his greatest hits.

According to Bloody Disgusting , the filming location for the original 1980 movie, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Hardwick, New Jersey, is still an active Boy Scouts camp. While it's normally closed to the public, it will be open several days this fall so that horror movie fans can take a scenic stroll through Jason’s effective birthplace.

The tours are being organized by Crystal Lake Tours and feature a number of options. The limited Lakefront Tour will take visitors to the lake seen in the film for $89. A Full Tour allows fans to see all the filming locations in the property, as well as a chance to see them all in the dark. That runs $159. (Taxes and fees are extra.) Photos are allowed for either tour, and temperature checks and social distancing will be enforced. You have to be at least 15 years old to enter.

Crystal Lake Tours is booking guests for October 23, October 24, October 25, October 30, October 31, November 13, and November 14. Tickets are first-come, first-serve, so if you want to spend the Halloween season with Jason, you should register on the Crystal Lake Tours website.

Fans of Friday the 13th will soon have the chance to experience Camp Crystal Lake in real life . Crystal Lake Tours is currently offering tickets for experiences in New Jersey this spring. The various tours will let fans explore the actual filming location that was used for the original slasher classic. These experiences range from a guided walking tour to a full-on hours long experience leading into a night at the camp.

Crystal Lake Tours currently has tickets available for experiences beginning in mid-April. The experiences include Morning Lakefront Tours, Afternoon Extended Tours, Afternoon Canoe Tours and Evening Flashlight Tours. The most inclusive package offered is the Evening Fan Tours With Fan Favorite Activity. Per the company's website, here's what that entails.

"These tour sessions are the perfect fit! The extended tour session takes you on the full tour loop and includes all filming locations. These tours start out in the daylight and finish up in the dark - just like the movie! Bring along a flashlight as it will be dark when your tour ends. These tour sessions include a special fan favorite activity at our famous waterfront following the tour - please bring along a comfortable camp chair (and a blanket in cooler weather). This session includes special gifts (approximately $35 value).

1980's Friday the 13th , which introduced the world to Jason Voorhees (albeit in a brief cameo at the end before he became the face of the franchise) was filmed at an actual Boy Scout camp, Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco. Located in Hardwick, New Jersey, it has since become a haven for horror fans. Since it is an active Boy Scout camp, fans can't just wander the grounds as they please. But these ticketed experiences give horror lovers the chance to set foot on Jason's stomping grounds.

The company offers guided tours, canoeing excursions, celebrity reunions, movie screenings and more. Over the years, Crystal Lake Tours has hosted events with guests such as Adrienne King, Jeannine Taylor, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Ron Millkie, Tom Savini, Taso Stavrakis and Harry Manfredini. In 2018, the company held an overnight experience, which was arguably the holy grail for Friday the 13th fans.

Meanwhile, the Friday the 13th franchise itself remains dormant . The last movie in the series was 2009's Friday the 13th remake. Ever since then, it's been a battle to get Jason and his machete back on the big screen. Much of this has to do with an ongoing legal battle involving original director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller. If the rights ever get sorted out, it's a safe bet that a new project will get moving in a hurry. But at this point, given how long this has all been dragged out, that may be a big if.

These various tour options range in price from between $89 and $179. Tickets tend to sell out, so those who are interested would be wise to jump on it sooner rather than later. Tours begin on April 16 and run through early June. Those who are interested in grabbing tickets before they're gone can head on over to CrystalLakeTours.com .

This year’s Halloween celebrations won’t be able to be as festive or outlandish as before, thanks to the global pandemic. But that doesn’t mean that everything fun is off the table. Thanks to Bloody Disgusting , we’ve learned that if you’re on the East Coast during this spooky season, there’s a special event you won’t want to miss if you’re a horror fan. The original Friday the 13th was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, which is still an active Boy Scouts camp in Hardwick, New Jersey. If you want to splurge, for a little extra dough there’s even a tour that takes you to those same locations at night. In a statement on their site , it says “Similar to our recent summer tours, these events will feature a limited number of guests to allow for proper social distancing. Temperature scans will be performed at check-in and face coverings will be required at all times. We will continue to monitor the situation and send updates to all ticketed guests.”

The real-life filming locations of Friday the 13th

Mrs. Voorhees slashed her way through the unsuspecting camp counselors of New Jersey's Warren County, and horror fans can relive the macabre magic while touring the shooting locations of Friday the 13th.

Most diehard fans can recall the exact moment they fell in love with the horror film genre, with that memory paving the way for a lifetime of enjoyment. But the fun of being a scary movie fanatic doesn't have to stop when the credits roll: You can immerse yourself in the action (if you dare) by visiting the real filming locations where your favorite horror flicks came to life.

Followers of Freddy Krueger can stroll down Genesee Avenue in Los Angeles and gaze at Nancy Thompson's $3 million Dutch Colonial ; Stephen King fans can book their stay at the Stanley Hotel (a.k.a. the Overlook) in Estes Park, Col.; and world travelers can even make the pilgrimage to Transylvania to visit Dracula's majestic stronghold inspiration of Bran Castle . But this story is for the Friday the 13th enthusiasts who want to saunter around the same campgrounds Mrs. Voorhees ( Betsy Palmer ) did in Sean S. Cunningham's seminal slasher.

Here's EW's peek behind Camp Crystal Lake's curtain, revealing all the real-life locations where Friday the 13th was filmed.

The daytime diner and general store (Hope Junctions Antiques, Hope, N.J.)

A proper tour of the original Friday the 13th filming locations lies just 60 miles northwest of New York City in New Jersey, and a complete expedition of the film's sets can be managed by fans who want to dedicate a whole day to sightseeing. First stop: Hope. With a population of approximately 2,000 people, the township is a quaint locale that will truly enchant Friday fans, especially those imaginative enough to match up their surroundings with the scenes and camera angles used by Cunningham. Following the 1958 flashback sequence, which serves as Friday the 13th 's creepy introduction to the mysterious murderer, fans join up with Crystal Lake's cook, Annie (Robbi Morgan), 22 years later in present-day 1980. Looking for directions to the camp, she enters a small diner/general store where she meets the kindly truck driver Enos (Rex Everhart).

Fans can still visit the daytime diner (the nighttime one will come up later), which remains in its original location, but now exists as Hope Junction Antiques located at 331 High St. Charles and Lisa Iulo own the antique shop, which was once a Hard Times Coffee Shop. Take the time to enjoy this jewel of tourism in its own right, but once Friday fans have soaked up the shop, they need only head to their left outside the store to continue their journey back to Camp Blood. Two buildings down, fans can track Annie and Enos' path after he agrees to give her a ride, where the characters bump into "Crazy" Ralph (Walt Gorney). The two-story building, which is now an Era Burgdorff Realtors business, has been painted white, and it sits on the corner of Walnut Street and High Street next to a one-way road sign. And as devoted fans all know, that's where Ralph tries to warn Annie about her destination: "It's got a death curse!"

The cemetery (Moravian Cemetery, Hope, N.J.)

After shrugging off Crazy Ralph, Enos does in fact give Annie a lift, but the truck driver drops off his passenger a ways away from Crystal Lake. The cook must proceed on foot the rest of the trip, and, behind Annie, viewers will spot a graveyard with a wrought-iron gate. This is the Moravian Cemetery in Hope, N.J.

The exterior set piece is only a three-minute walk west of Hope Junction Antiques on High Street and then onto Delaware Road. Once tourists are done taking in the eerie cemetery, it's onward to Blairstown, N.J. to continue the Friday the 13th adventure.

The nighttime diner (Blairstown Diner, Blairstown, N.J.)

Only a 12-minute drive north of the antiques store, on Hope Blairstown Road, fans will find the Blairstown Diner . This is where the new owner of Camp Crystal Lake, Steve Christy (Peter Brouwer), spent most of that fateful night back in June of 1980. Unfortunately, Steve makes the mistake of returning to camp, and that's where he meets his end at the hands of the vengeful Mrs. Voorhees. The Blairstown Diner proudly promotes the fact that the eating establishment was "featured in Friday the 13th ," and both interior and exterior were shot at the restaurant. So, if you happen to get hungry on your Friday fandom walking tour, stop in for an omelet or griddle specialty .

Once fans finish up at the Blairstown Diner, they're only a three-minute walk north on Carhart Street, and there they can find the First National Bank building still standing brick-for-brick and column-for-column as it appeared in the film. This is part of Blairstown's famed historic district, and the FNB is where the exterior shots of Annie entering the daytime diner (a.k.a. the interior of Hope Junction Antiques) were filmed. There are a number of Friday the 13th -related stops to make while visiting the historic district, and Roy's Hall is one such must-see. The non-profit offers special screenings of Friday the 13th each year, so if fans plan out their trips perfectly, they can tour all the film's sets and see one of the best slasher movies of all time while in Blairstown, too.

Camp Crystal Lake (Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, Hardwick Township, N.J.)

After having a fantastic time visiting Hope and Blairstown, it's time for the main event, so jump in the car and head 12 minutes north on Shannon Road. Your destination is the Hardwick Township of New Jersey. Take a left on Sand Pond Road, and you'll find Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco . While Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco has hosted thousands of Boy Scout troops since its inception in 1927, it is also where the majority of Friday the 13th was filmed.

Courtesy of Crystal Lake Tours , fans can visit Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco and explore nearly every square inch of Friday the 13th' s Camp Blood, which is an interactive dream come true. Tourists are virtually transported back to 1958, and they'll practically hear Claudette (Debra S. Hayes) and Barry (Willie Adams) singing "Michael" in the fellowship hall all over again. According to the tour, Hayes and Adams were dating in real life, and Friday fanatics will even visit the very loft where Mrs. Voorhees did away with the lovebirds, as they have the honor of being the film's first victims.

Back outside, fans will find the original Crystal Lake sign hanging approximately 20 to 30 feet away from a replica of the Jeep that both Steve Christy and Mrs. Voorhees drove during the movie. The filmmakers simply used two different license plates to distinguish who the Jeep belonged to in the film. Several crew and cast members even signed the infamous Jeep on its back gate, including Adrienne King, Robbi Morgan, Ari Lehman, and special effects extraordinaire Tom Savini .

Just nearby, a lonely canoe floats on the water. The Friday the 13th soundtrack resonates in the background, and fans will wait and wonder if Jason (Lehman) will pop out of the lake like he does when he frightens poor Alice (King) in the movie. Next, take a gander over to the Price Lodge, a.k.a. the Shower House, to see where Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) was slain by the killer.

The one sink where Marcie brushes her teeth remains, as does the lone light fixture that the murder weapon clangs against in the film. Savini decided to use a real axe, and made sure it clanged so that audiences would know it was authentic. That gimmick makes the terror all the more effective when Marcie slumps to her death with a separate (and fortunately fake axe) attached to her face via Savini's magnificent make-up effects.

Jack's ( Kevin Bacon ) quarters have been dubbed by his girlfriend's name, Brenda's cabin, and the interior appears much the same way it does when Mrs. Voorhees sticks the arrow through his throat. Further along the tour, fans will find the main cabin feels like it came out of a time capsule, too, and one can almost hear Jack's breakfast sizzling when Bacon cooks up his own bacon in the film. Even the "Comanche" sign hanging outside the main cabin has been perfectly replicated from the movie. There is also a chance to inspect the archery range where Brenda (Laurie Bartram) was shot down by Mrs. Voorhees, and a sign that reads "Danger" hangs in the same place Jason's mother left crooner Bing Crosby 's son, Harry Crosby, hanging out at the generator shed.

But not everything about the filming location has remained the same. Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco's docks are now configured quite differently from the movie's, and the lifeguard tower has been significantly altered in appearance. However, the beach where Alice battles Mrs. Voorhees is eerily similar, and it's easy to envision the two of them engaged in their final battle to the death.

Fans can expect to walk up to a mile while taking in the campground, but the tours can last two or even three hours depending on the amount of time each group spends inspecting all of Friday the 13th 's interior and exterior sets. Tours are offered in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings, but there's also a special "flashlight" session at night, which adds that spooky feel horror fans crave. Plus, some of the camp's other special activities include archery and canoeing sessions.

Depending on the scheduled events, fans might even find Friday the 13th alumni in their midst, as the original cast and crew enjoy having reunions complete with Q&As at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco. For more information on upcoming events, visit the Crystal Lake Tours website . And don't forget to visit the gift shop to pick up your own sample of Crystal Lake's waters from the Angry Mother Bottling Co. Do it! You don't want to make Mrs. Voorhees angry.

'The Life of Chuck' Review: Mike Flanagan Makes Stephen King’s Story Soar | TIFF 2024

'joker: folie à deux's rotten tomatoes score is no laughing matter, denzel washington’s 81% rotten tomatoes crime thriller will have a new streaming home soon.

With summer coming to an end and Halloween around the corner, there is a certain appeal to campground-set slashers this time of year. From modern picks like last year’s Sadie Sink -led slasher Fear Street: 1978 and Peacock’s latest queer horror They/Them to cult-classics like Sleepaway Camp or 1981's The Burning , there’s a lot to choose from to quell this particular hankering. But none of these flicks live up to the original Friday the 13th , and now, fans of the essential slasher franchise can tour the real-life campground where the 1980 horror flick was filmed.

As most diehard Jason Voorhees fans already know, the original Friday the 13th was filmed at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, which is still an active Boy Scouts camp in Hardwick, New Jersey. Although the campgrounds are off-limits to the public, there are a few rare events offered by the camp that allow fans to visit the filming location. For the last few years, Crystal Lake Tours have come to the rescue: Friday the 13th fans have been offered the opportunity to tour the real-life Crystal Lake. A handful of events have been announced, per Bloody Disgusting , by Crystal Lake Tours as Halloween grows nearer.

Upcoming dates offered by Crystal Lake Tours include Friday, September 30 to Saturday, October 1; the weekend of October 21-23; and the weekend of October 28-30. As a special bonus, the first weekend, Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, the team at Crystal Lake Tours will be opening up the generator shed to the public for the first time ever. Visitor will be able to enter the building and get a free 8”x10” photo print standing next to the generator, which was turned off in the film, leaving the campground shrouded in the darkness.

RELATED: Why ‘Friday the 13th, Part 3’ Remains the Franchise’s Best Sequel

The 1980 classic follows a group of camp counselors who are stalked by a mysterious killer. Like many of the slashers that are now considered classics, Friday the 13th – directed by Sean S. Cunningham – started out as a pretty serious horror, but took on a more comedic tone as more and more sequels were added to the franchise. Now, one of the most iconic horror film killers, Jason Voorhees, technically wasn’t even in the original film in the franchise, with his mother (played by Betsy Palmer ) being the one doing all the killing. Since the original film, Friday the 13th has branched out into 11 different sequels/remakes that together have made a mark on pop culture, inspiring several subsequent campy horror films and even references in other genres.

A romantic getaway in NJ offers so many backdrops that even locals can stay in-state for a vacation and feel like they're getting a change of scenery. The state may be small, but it's as jam-packed with opportunities for couples getaways as the turnpike at rush hour.

More than a state of "exits," despite jokes stating otherwise, Jersey has lauded shore points with breathtaking views and tons of things to do courtesy of boardwalks, resorts and nightlife that keep you on your feet long after you've witnessed the sunset over the Atlantic. Its close proximity to New York City gives way to skyline views, minus the price tag of staying on that side of the Hudson.

The accommodation options for a couples getaway in NJ are as diverse as the landscape. You'll find coastal spa resorts that feel like a tranquil oasis and bed-and-breakfasts in Cape May, NJ, that leave you feeling like you've gone back to simpler times. Many offer easy access to the state's greatest hits (and we're not talking about those in Bruce Springsteen's catalog). From idyllic oceanside inns to sprawling resorts with nightclubs, these are the best spots for a romantic getaway in NJ.

HAPPINESS IS CAMPING – THANK YOU!

Beyond all the great things happening at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, we also raised funds for Happiness Is Camping during our events since 2019. Happiness Is Camping is a separate local camp that provides a high quality summer camp experience for children with cancer – all at no cost to the camper.

After counting up the donation jars after our last event, we are thrilled to announce that  the overall donation total is now $28,122.80 since we started this campaign in 2019. We are so happy to be able to support their cause – thank you for your amazing generosity!

If you would like to make a direct donation,  please click here to visit their website .

THANK YOU again for making a difference for all of these kids!

Wrap-Up: Summer / Fall 2020 Tours

Masks, temperature checks, social distancing… even a bottle of Camp Crystal Lake hand sanitizer for each attendee!  Tons of careful planning went into our Summer and Fall 2020 tours.  This series of tours included celebrity meet & greets from Part 1 and Part 2 (including Ari’s first return to camp!), canoeing on the lake, evening flashlight tours, costumes on Halloween – and it all wrapped up on a Friday the 13th weekend in November.

The goal of these tours was to replace some of the lost summer camp revenue. If you joined us for one of these  43 tour sessions, we thank you for your support! It was fantastic to meet so many great local fans. We hope you enjoyed your visit.

September 2019: The largest cast & crew reunion in 40 years!

On behalf of all the volunteer tour guides and the rest of the Scouting community, we would like to thank all of the September 2019 tour attendees for their support and generosity.  All profit from the event will go directly towards our restoration projects at the camp.

Our 14th and 15th tours drew fans from 42 states and 7 countries!  With 7 cast & crew, this was also the largest reunion since the filming of the movie 40 years ago.  Absolutely amazing! We really enjoy providing these experiences and we hope you had a great time during your stay.

We would like to thank each and every attendee for making this event a massive success.  You are now part of NoBe’s history which stretches all the way back to 1927.  As an ambassador of our tour, please tell your fellow fans about your experience and please discourage anyone from trying to enter the property outside of an official tour.  Trespassers on the youth camping property make it very difficult for us to get permission to run these tours.  Thanks for your help!

Finally, we would like to thank Adrienne, Jeannine, Robbi, Ron, Harry, Tom, Taso and C and V Promotions for making this event even more special for our fans.  The memories from this weekend will certainly last a lifetime.  Until we meet again…

May 2019: Fans from far and wide!

On behalf of all the volunteer tour guides and the rest of the Scouting community, we would like to thank all of the May 2019 tour attendees for their support and generosity.  All profit from the tour will go directly towards our restoration projects at the camp.

Our 11th, 12th and 13th tours drew fans from 39 states and 6 countries!  Except for a little rain on Friday morning, the weather was outstanding.  We loved watching your reaction to Jeannine opening the shower curtain!  We had a great time providing these experiences and we hope you had a great time.

Our 8th, 9th and 10th tours drew fans from 28 states and five countries – covering 4 continents! Except for a little rain on Saturday morning (we dodged Hurricane Michael!), the weather was ideal for October.  We’ll certainly never forget seeing Robbi dropped off for the first tour in an Elston Oil fuel truck. We had a great time providing these experiences and we hope you had a great time.

April 2018: Thank you, thank you and thank you.

On behalf of all the volunteer tour guides and the rest of the Scouting community, we would like to thank all of the April 2018 tour attendees for their support and generosity.  All profit from the tour will go directly towards our restoration projects at the camp.

What a weekend!  Snow on Tuesday morning, then 81°F on Friday and 80°F on Saturday.  Our Saturday overnight campers also had a dose of winter weather – flurries were falling when Adrienne made a surprise visit to our campers in the middle of the night!  That didn’t stop them from enjoying a morning canoe ride when it was only 42°F.  We then experienced flooding rains here in New Jersey on Monday, so we were VERY lucky.

A perfect November tour!

After selling out within seconds, the third ever public tour of the primary filming location of Friday the 13th, Part 1 took place on Friday, November 13th, 2015. The autumn winds were howling, but it was an otherwise perfect day with the sun shining.  This was by far the largest tour and once again a great group of fans.  “Campers” came from at least 7 different states including California and Florida!

September 2013: THANK YOU!

crystal lake tours new jersey

The second-ever public tour of the primary filming location of Friday the 13th, Part 1 took place on Friday, September 13th, 2013. It was another beautiful, sunny day at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco – similar to the day of the first tour. An intense line of thunderstorms had passed through the area the night before and knocked out power to much of the area, but that wasn’t going to stop us from making dreams come true – after all, three of our guests were coming from as far away as California, Ontario and Norway! We quickly found a vendor to deliver porta-potties on short notice, cooked lunch in a dark kitchen and prepared the tour locations for some great photo opportunities.

Everything else that day went very smooth and our guests all left with smiles on their faces – and of course the power came back on while the last guests were leaving! We hope everyone got back home safe and we hope you’ll be able to join us again in the future.
