The South has some charming towns and romantic destinations that are the perfect place to spend time with your sweetie. Beaches and mountains tend to be the biggest hits for romantic weekends away. Thankfully this region has plenty of both.

St. augustine.

America’s oldest city is the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, especially instead of a flight to Europe. Wander the ancient streets and dine at the incredible restaurants.

The town of Blue Ridge is one of the state’s most charming with a thriving downtown. While there are a handful of small inns, it’s also a nice place to rent a cabin.

The town of Dahlonega is known as the site of Georgia’s first gold rush. But these days it’s an easy getaway from Atlanta with charming shops and inns downtown.

My top pick for a romantic getaway in the South has to be Asheville, North Carolina . Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Asheville is home to great dining and the world-famous Biltmore Estate .

Asheville makes a wonderful romantic getaway destination in any season, but it’s especially beautiful in the fall. Word on the street is that the variety of deciduous trees in the Blue Ridge around Asheville is what makes an especially vibrant and long fall color season.

Speaking of quaint and cozy towns for a romantic getaway in the South, Hubby and I also love a Williamsburg weekend . Home to Colonial Williamsburg, the largest living history museum in the world, this part of Virginia is rich with history and beautiful architecture…plus some great places to eat .

Even if you don’t buy a Colonial Williamsburg ticket, you can still enjoy the shopping and restaurants at Merchants Square, walk around the Historic Center, and dine in a historic tavern (definitely a “must do”).

For the most immersive experience, stay at the Williamsburg Inn or Williamsburg Lodge just steps away from Duke of Gloucester Street (Colonial Williamsburg’s “main street” through the Historic Center).

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

When you want a beachy good time with your spouse and some good food, try a Hilton Head Island getaway. We think Hilton Head Island is one of the best places in the South for a relaxing weekend.

Spend the day at the beach, visit Coligny Beach Park with its nearby shopping center, or check out Harbour Town (there’s a gate fee) and the lighthouse. Grab dinner at A Lowcountry Backyard. (Make sure you arrive early since they don’t take reservations.)

In the morning, you can enjoy breakfast at Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café like a local.

Savannah, Georgia

For a quintessentially Southern escape, you simply must book a weekend in Savannah, Georgia . And it helps if you say it all drawn out like Suuuuvannuuuh. Savannah simply drips with romance and history, like the trees drip with Spanish moss.

If you want to creep yourself out, try a nighttime ghost tour. The locals will tell you that Savannah is the most haunted city in America. I’ve decided not to test that theory.

And the food. Oh, the food. You could go to Savannah only for the food and come away happy. Grab breakfast at The Collins Quarter before going on a history walking tour. Eat dinner at Vic’s on the River (ask for a window seat if they’re available) and then go for a stroll down the famous River Street or grab some amazing Leopold’s ice cream for dessert.

Oh! And don’t miss the biscuits at Back in the Day Bakery.

Try a beach weekend getaway at 30A

For a relaxing and romantic beach getaway, try 30A in Florida’s Walton County. The white sand beaches on this stretch of scenic highway are beautiful. And there are plenty of things to do in 30A even if you don’t consider yourself a “beach person.”

From great shopping and food to biking and kayaking, you definitely won’t lack for fun activities in 30A.

Hotel stays in 30A can be quite pricey, so consider renting a condo on the beach to save some money. And with a full kitchen, you can save money on food as well.

Why not try a romantic getaway in the oldest city in America? St. Augustine, Florida’s historic district and downtown area are where most of the action is located. It hosts many museums, shops, art galleries, and restaurants that attract thousands of visitors every year.

From the Spanish fortress Castillo de San Marcos to the multitude of historic houses, museums, available guided tours, and other attractions there is plenty for you to see and do during your getaway whether it’s a St. Augustine day trip or a weekend visit .

Charleston, South Carolina , is steeped in history and Southern charm. If you’re looking for a more “historical old town” city break weekend, stay in the heart of the city.

Top sites to visit on your trip to Charleston include Fort Sumter, Aiken-Rhett House, Historic Charleston City Market, and The Battery. Charleston Tea Garden, the only tea plantation in North America, is just a short 20-mile drive outside the center of Charleston.

Great shopping and good food are also easy to find in Charleston. King Street has been dubbed one of the top 10 shopping streets in the U.S.

If you enjoy seafood, you’ll love eating in Charleston. And hushpuppies. Bathe in the hushpuppies. Jump headfirst into a basket of hushpuppies and eat your way out.

Hotel rates are high in the Charleston historic district. To save money on accommodations, your best option is to stay outside the city in Mount Pleasant or North Charleston.

Washington, DC

Other than maybe snow-covered mountains and waterfalls, I don’t think there is a natural site more romantic than cherry blossoms in full bloom. If you’ve spent any time in Washinton, DC, during cherry blossom season, you know what I’m talking about.

A little breeze blows through and it’s like it’s raining cherry blossom petals. Perfection.

Take a romantic stroll along the tidal basin to the Jefferson Memorial to see the blossoms at their peak in early spring. It’s like being in the middle of a fairy tale.

If you want to explore some of Northern Virginia, George Washington’s magnificent home on the Potomac, Mount Vernon, is a short drive outside the city. It’s a wonderful way to spend a day.

Annapolis, Maryland

I’d say that Annapolis, Maryland, is an underrated weekend destination. Perhaps it’s overlooked because it’s overshadowed by nearby Washington, DC, and Baltimore, but I’d book a romantic getaway there in a heartbeat.

And if you can travel there in the fall for the peak colors in the Chesapeake Bay area then do it. It’s stunning. You can stroll through old, colonial streets in the historic district. You’ll see lovely old colonial-era row houses.

Tour the Maryland State House , once the home of the Continental Congress. Visit the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy or go sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.

Tucked away in the Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is a top honeymoon destination in the Eastern United States. And I can see why. The Smoky Mountains are beautiful.

I recommend you bypass the touristy attractions in Gatlinburg and nearby Pigeon Forge. Instead, explore one of the many scenic drives and hikes in Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

More adventurous people (i.e., not me) might enjoy white water rafting, camping, or fishing. And if it’s cold or rainy outside, you can just cuddle up in your hotel room or cabin with your boo.

Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, holiday, or need a quiet weekend getaway, these fabulous destinations are just what you need!

Romantic Getaways in Virginia

This historic town is located in the northern part of Virginia, just a quick drive to Washington D.C.

Each street is full of hundreds of years of history and lined with beautifully preserved 18th-century buildings.

Old Town Alexandria is a bustling area with many boutiques, restaurants, and museums on the water. Take a romantic stroll along the Potomac River, bike down the Mount Vernon Trail, drive out to Mount Vernon, take a ride on the King Street Trolley, and go on an intimate river cruise.

There is no shortage of romantic restaurants and bars here either. The river is lined with cozy spots like Ada’s on the River and Chart House .

Other romantic dinner spots include The Majestic, Bastille, and the Wharf .

Places to Stay in Alexandria

The Alexandrian Old Town Autograph Collection is in the heart of the Old Town and just steps from the waterfront. The Alexandrian is the person spot to walk to all the main restaurants and shops.
The Morrison House Boutique Hotel is close to King Street and within walking distance to the waterfront.
Kimpton Hotel & Spa: For the ultimate luxurious experience, visit the Kimpton. Guests have full access to the outdoor garden, terrace, and remarkable spa. The hotel also has a delicious french restaurant called Brabo. Make sure to check it out!
Hyatt Old Town is a modern hotel in Old Town Alexandria. It is near King Street and only a few minute’s walk from the metro station.

Williamsburg

Williamsburg is the perfect romantic couples getaway. It is also one of the United State’s oldest and most historic towns full of museums, preserved colonial buildings, cozy restaurants, and fascinating history.

Williamsburg is most romantic to visit during the fall when the leaves or changes or even in the winter months.

The town is beautifully decorated and gleaming with thousands of lights during the holidays. Visitors can enjoy live Christmas music, special celebrations, and holiday shops.

Spend a night or two in Colonial Williamsburg with day trips to Jamestown and Yorktown.

Take some time to explore the Colonial Williamsburg Museum, stroll around Merchant Square , and dine at one of the town’s delicious restaurants.

For a romantic night out, try a horse-drawn carriage ride followed by a pint at a cozy colonial pub or dinner at the Williamsburg Winery.

Le Yaca French Restaurant and The King’s Arms Tavern are highly recommended dinner spots. The King’s Arms Tavern even offers a romantic wine dinner for two during the holidays.

The Williamsburg Inn is a must if you want the “colonial” experience. The Inn is impeccably decorated and offers a plethora of luxurious amenities.
The Williamsburg Lodge is another accommodation in the Colonial Williamsburg Resort Collection. The rooms have recently been renovated and modernly decorated. Guests receive additional perks such as shuttle service and access to the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.
Wedmore Place is a European-style hotel located at the Williamsburg Winery. The small 28 room hotel is the perfect spot for a quiet and romantic experience with many fireplaces and cozy rooms.

Secluded Destinations in Virginia:

Shenandoah valley.

The 200,000 acre National Park is home to romantic waterfalls, spectacular wildlife, and lush forest. This beautiful destination is full of outdoor activities and is perfect for a quiet getaway.

The Shenandoah Valley is home to the extraordinary Luray Caverns and one of the top secluded romantic destinations in the US.

Go on a hiking or kayaking adventure, and end your day at one of the valley’s quaint wineries. The Chesapeake Bay Wine Trail includes eight of Virginia’s best wineries.

Some romantic accommodations include L’Auberge Provencale and Piney Hill Cottages . Both offer a variety of romantic couples packages and activities.

If you want something a little less remote, try the Georges Inn in Lexington. This beautiful historic Inn has 21 rooms and a delicious continental breakfast made with local ingredients.

Asheville is a lively city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains . It has become a popular destination due to its fast number of breweries and large art scene.

The Pisgah National Forest is a popular mountain destination with several hiking trails and cozy cabin rentals.

Asheville is most famous for being home to the Biltmore Estate . This extravagant 19th-century estate was home to the Vanderbilt family, who opened it to visitors. Visitors can tour the castle, hike and wander the grounds, grab a bite at one of the local restaurants, and partake in some delicious wine tasting.

For the most romantic experience, try visiting during the holiday season when the entire grounds are decorated immaculately for Christmas.

Places to Stay in Asheville

The Inn on Biltmore Estate sits on the property and is perfect for a luxurious getaway. You are within walking distance of the Biltmore mansion and have access to many amenities.
Village Hotel is another option if you want to stay on the estate. The rooms here are cozy, and the hotel is within walking distance of the winery and Antler Village.
The Windsor Boutique Hotel is located in downtown Asheville within walking distance of many breweries and restaurants.
Omni Grove Park Inn – For a more quiet experience, the Omni Grove Park Inn is nestled in the mountains. The hotel has its own golf court, swimming pool, spa, and restaurant for guests to enjoy.

Secluded Destinations in North Carolina:

The Highlands is a small, luxurious mountain town in North Carolina, near the Nantahala National Forest. The Highlands is known for high-end shops, art galleries, antique stores, and charming restaurants.

The sleepy town also has terrific hiking trails ranging in length and difficulty.

Like everything else in the Highlands, the food is top-notch. Some most highly-rated restaurants are the Wine Garden, Wolfgang’s Restaurant and Wine Bistro, and Madison’s Restaurant.

There is no shortage of cozy inns and luxurious hotels here. Three of the most romantic places to stay are the Old Edwards Inn , White Birch Inn , and Skyline Lodge . You will be taken care of no matter where you choose to stay!

Romantic Getaways in South Carolina

Charleston is one of my favorite U.S destinations to visit year-round. The city is full of southern charm and a wonderful place to learn about the south’s history. Charleston is also a popular place for weddings and romantic weekend getaways.

History lovers can visit Fort Sumter, Boone Hall, Aiken-Rhett House, Drayton Hall, and Middleton Place. The downtown area has many attractions as well.

Book a carriage tour company that will take you around the Battery and surrounding areas in style.

Looking for some delicious food and a relaxing getaway? Charleston has some of the best seafood restaurants around. Hands down, the Darling is the best place to grab some oysters!

You really can’t go wrong with food in and around the downtown area. Both downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant have a plethora of amazing restaurants.

Charleston is also known for its high-end shopping on King Street and quiet beaches. Folly Beach is a popular beach just 30 minutes from the city.

If you want a more romantic experience, I highly recommend Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island . These two beaches are much quieter and lined with beautiful million-dollar beach homes.

Francis Marion Hotel was opened in 1924 and beautifully restored in the 1990s. The hotel includes spacious suites, conference rooms, a restaurant, bar, spa, and ballrooms.
Wentworth Mansion is a 19th-century mansion-turned boutique hotel with 21 elegantly decorated rooms.
The Spectator Hotel is known for its stunning 1920s decors, making you feel as if you have stepped back to Prohibition times. Whether you decide to stay here or not, make sure to stop by their bar for some of the most creative cocktails around.
Zero George Street is a small hotel made from restored 1800s carriage houses. Guests can enjoy drinks and dinner in the courtyard and relax on the beautiful southern porch.

Secluded Destinations in South Carolina:

Kiawah and Seabrook Islands are two terrific destinations close to Charleston that offer a more secluded experience.

Kiawah Island

Kiawah has gained popularity over the last few years for its exclusiveness and pristine gold club, The Governor Club. The 11-square-mile island is gated and preserved by the Kiawah Habitat Conservancy.

Guests on the island can enjoy over 30 miles of biking trails, natural parks, private and public beaches, and club amenities.

Seabrook Island

Seabrook is a lesser-known island located just 30 minutes from Charleston. It is a little more residential than Kiawah and also much smaller.

The island has a large number of vacation rentals that you can purchase year-round. Seabrook Island is also home to a large equestrian center and Seabrook Island Club.

Romantic Getaways in Georgia

Coming in as the top romantic getaway in Georgia is the city of Savannah. This historic city needs to introduction.

Savannah is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the south. With its tree-lined oak trees, beautifully kept squares, and 19th-century homes, this is about as romantic as it gets.

There is no shortage of things to explore in Savannah. For a more romantic experience, the Historic District is the area of Savannah I recommend you try. Here you will find some trendy rooftop bars and delicious restaurants. There is no shortage of delicious and unique places here.

Other great things to do are tour the historic homes, visit Forsyth Park and other lush city squares, and take a stroll down River Street. River Street is the more touristy part of the city, full of restaurants and tourist shops. It is worth checking out if you have never been before!

Places to Stay in Savannah

Eliza Thompson House is a cozy historic inn built in 1847. This adult-only accommodation is perfectly located near Forsyth Park and within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants.
The Mansion on Forsyth Park is a 19th-century mansion-turned hotel. Like many places in Savannah, the hotel has a spooky history. It is a very cozy place to stay with a spa, bar, restaurant, and pool.
The Cotton Sail is an old cotton mill that was turned into a small 56 bedroom property. It is located right on the river and has a popular rooftop bar with spectacular views.
The Kimpton Brice Hotel is a contemporary hotel just outside the downtown area. Guests have access to a variety of amenities, including complimentary bikes.

Secluded Destinations in Georgia:

Want a more secluded destination? The Blue Ridge Mountains are perfect for a quiet getaway. The mountain range spans the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Some of the best cabins are outside of Asheville, NC, and in the town of Blue Ridge, GA.

Blue Ridge is a cozy little mountain town in northern Georgia. There is plenty here to do in terms of outdoor activities.

Hike one of many trails to a waterfall with a picnic, go on a horseback riding adventure, and wander the streets of the bustling town. When the day is over, relax in your log cabin with serene views of the mountains.

Another secluded mountain getaway is Dahlonega . This small town in the Georgia mountains was first known for its involvement in the gold rush.

Now, Dahlonega is known as a filming location for many Hallmark movies.

The little town has many charming shops selling local products and cozy little restaurants for a quiet meal. One of the main things to do in Dahlonega is to tour the surrounding wineries. My personal favorite is the Montaluce winery which is designed to look like a Tuscan villa.

If you want to spend the night, some great places like The Smith House .

Romantic Getaways in Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee is a top destination for music and art lovers. Beale Street is one of the city’s top attractions. Here you will find a variety of shops and restaurants.

Memphis is also home to the Brooks Museum of Art and Botanical Gardens . For a romantic outdoor excursion, pack a lunch and have a picnic in the 100-acre gardens.

Another terrific thing to do in Memphis includes taking a river cruise on the Mississippi River. and climb to the Peabody Rooftop with views of the city

At night, take a stroll along the Riverbluff Walk or catch a show at the Orpheum Theater . Visit historic Beale Street for dinner and drinks afterward. Try the Peabody Hotel rooftop at night for sunset views of the city. On Thursday nights, the rooftop bar has live music and other events.

Places to Stay in Memphis

Peabody Memphis is famously known as being home to a family of ducks that swim in the fountain lobby each day. But there is much more to this hotel than that. Traditionally furnished with a lavish lobby and lounge, the Peabody is perfect for a romantic stay. They even offer an assortment of romance packages to be added to your room.
Big Cypress Lodge is a luxury accommodation that makes you feel like you are in a secluded cabin in the woods. For a romantic night in, check out the third-floor bar and lounge.
River Inn of Harbor Town is the smaller of the three accommodations and is another highly-rated Memphis hotel. Ask for a room overlooking the river and enjoy a delicious dinner at Paullette’s and a complimentary breakfast during your stay.

Romantic Getaways in Louisiana

For a fast-paced getaway, New Orleans has lots to offer. This beautiful french city is steeped in history and known for delicious creole food.

When you get hungry be sure to check out Miguel’s Pizza . The place is known nationally by rock climbers but hikers and locals share the love too. They can accommodate gluten-free and vegan diets. Miguel’s is packed on weekend days; expect a wait but it’s worth it.

For drinks head to Hops , a bar made out of old shipping containers with views on each side.

Orange Beach, Alabama

To get to Charleston, you can fly to Charleston International Airport or drive through I-26/US17.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Nestled among the Ouachita Mountains , Hot Springs is the perfect vacation spot for a relaxing and romantic getaway. Enjoy hiking through the nearby wilderness, soak up in thermal springs, and enjoy the town’s many cultural activities.

Hot Springs National Park is at the top of things to do in Hot Spring. You can go a leisurely hike through the park’s stunning mountainside or take a scenic drive . Make sure to visit one of the historic bathhouses along the way. You can camp there as well.

You can also take a stroll and plan a picnic at Garvan Woodland Gardens featuring forest trails, waterfalls, and old buildings. During the holidays, the park turns into a fairyland with over 5 million twinkling lights.

For dinner and to sample some local beers , head to Superior Bathhouse Brewery located in a restored historic bathhouse.

You will find plenty of thermal baths and spas in town to soak up for a couple of hours. Quapaw Baths and Spa is the most popular and top-rated spa in Hot Springs.

For something secluded, you can book a cabin in the forest, or check out the lakefront properties as well for some sweeping views. Otherwise, the 1884 Wildwood Bed and Breakfast Inn is highly rated by couples – breakfast is included and some rooms come with a fireplace and a spa bath.

Saint Simons Island, Georgia

The Golden Isles in Georgia, consisting of Saint Simons Island, Little Saint Simons Island, Jekyll Island, and Sea Island, is one of the most romantic places in the southeast.

The easiest way to access these islands is by car. There are two major airports nearby – Jacksonville, FL, and Savannah, GA. From Jacksonville, St. Simons Island is a little over an hour’s drive. From Savannah, the islands are a 1.5-hour drive.

Once on the islands, it’s fairly easy to explore by car or on foot. Looking for a more adventurous alternative? Try renting a golf cart ! Red Bug Motors is a great option. Their electric vehicles will get you anywhere you want to go!

In terms of sites, be sure to see the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum , which was rebuilt shortly after it was destroyed in the Civil War. The fishing pier is also a must on SSI – it’s right downtown near most of the island’s quaint boutiques and restaurants.

The best time of year to visit Saint Simons is during the shoulder seasons , specifically in April and September. There are fewer crowds, you can avoid the blazing summer heat, and there’s a better chance of finding cheaper hotels and rental cars.

In terms of restaurants, be sure to swing by the Southern Soul BBQ. It’s a former gas station turned bustling BBQ joint – there’s usually a line, but don’t miss it, it’s definitely one of the top things to see on Saint Simons Island.

The occasional longing for a getaway with the one you love is sometimes a much-needed break to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Mountain breaks, candlelit dinners on the beach, quaint little towns, relaxing spa retreats, or a walk through isolated nature trails; there’s something for every couple in the Southeast United States.

Here are my recommendations for the 23 most romantic getaways in the south east United States.

1. Gulf Shores Alabama

Spread over 32 miles, Alabama’s sugar-white sand beaches make the perfect romantic getaway with warm water, mild temperatures, and romantic sunsets.

You can choose one of the splendid beach resorts or homes to stay at and dine in any of the 200 restaurants (with outdoor and waterfront dining options, too) that offer a range of cuisines and drinks.

If you’d like to take the romance up a notch, you could arrange a helicopter ride with the sunset in the backdrop. It’ll make a memorable experience.

The numerous water activities offer quite the adventure for those couples looking for that. In the evenings, The Wharf has a lot to offer, from a Ferris wheel or train ride to a place to catch a movie or a laser light experience show, among others.

I recommend a stay at The Beach Club by Spectrum Resorts . Lakeside cottages, private pools, a spa , and an in-room garden tub; it’s all things romantic.

2. Mobile Alabama

For a magical experience that will keep you on your toes, Mobile is the place to visit with your beloved.

The French -inspired architecture gives it a 19th-century charm. I’d suggest you visit here in spring for the mesmerizing views of a city filled with white and pink azalea blooms. It’s also the time of the Azalea Trail Festival.

For a romantic waterfront dining experience, I recommend Sunset Pointe in the Fly Creek Marina. They have a fantastic selection of craft beer and wines and a mixology bar.

Drop by the Azalea City Golf Course for some tee time, or visit the Urban Emporium for some tasteful shopping. And if you want the ambiance of a bed and breakfast combined with the elegance and privacy of a boutique hotel, stay at the historic Malaga Inn .

This vibrant coastal town is a gem of the Gulf Coast.

3. Little Rock Arkansas

For those who would like to visit a city by the river, Little Rock, on the Arkansas River banks, is the perfect pick.

And there’s no place like the Capital Hotel for the perfect romantic getaway. Considered the “front porch of Little Rock,” they have incredibly spacious rooms with four-poster beds, and for the romantic ones, bathtubs big enough for two.

The two restaurants at the hotel, One Eleven and Capital Bar and Grill, serve comfort food, great liquor, and drool-worthy desserts, making for some upscale dining. Surprise your sweetheart by reserving a private dinner with access to their hidden gem, the Capital Wine Cellar.

Take a stroll along the river and the bridges , beautifully lit in the dark. The Clinton Presidential Park has a pedestrian bridge with splendid city views. Finish your evening by dining at 42 Bar and Table on their patio or terrace with unparalleled views.

4. St. Augustine Florida

A city steeped in history is also the perfect romantic getaway in Florida . St. Augustine is brimming with romance with beautiful beaches, striking architecture, horse-drawn carriages, and hidden courtyards.

Book your stay at The Collector Inn , an adults-only inn that has a heated pool and is made of nine historic buildings. My next favorite is Casa Monica Resort and Spa , with a private beach, many restaurants, and a Moroccan-style design with chandeliers and artwork.

For daytime activities, visit Whetstone Chocolates for a 45-minute tasting tour and a wide variety of fresh, delicious chocolates.

The San Sebastian Winery offers free wine tasting and a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of how wine is made. Also, don’t miss out on the iconic Lightner Museum for some art and history.

Dine at Michael’s for some great steak, seafood, and an extensive wine selection.

5. Key West Florida

A remote island 90 miles from Cuba is where you’ll feel like you’re away from it all.

If you have the time, drive down to Key West via the famous Overseas Highway, a perfect scenic drive for couples.

The gorgeous ocean views, the laid-back atmosphere, and the serene ambiance make it feel like a paradise. Not to forget, there’s the lively nightlife, historic sites, and watersports.

Stay at The Laureate Key West , an all-suite retreat with modern, luxurious suites and prime bayfront views. Their ocean-influenced decor provides soothing vibes.

Spend your afternoon sunbathing at Smathers Beach, go snorkeling, and visit the beautiful Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. There’s a lot to do in this place that’s close to perfect and far from ordinary.

Don’t forget to dine at Santiago’s Bodega for some fine wine, sangria, tapas, and desserts.

6. Islamorada Florida

Islamorada, off the coast of Florida, is the perfect tropical romantic getaway.

There’s a lot you can do here as a couple or not. Whether you’d like to lounge around on the stunning white sandy beaches or enjoy some adventurous activities, you will love this place.

For a romantic stay, I recommend the Casa Morada . With Caribbean-inspired decor, you can choose a room with views of the garden, sea, or lake . They even provide complimentary use of their kayaks, bicycles, and paddleboards.

If you’re into water activities, there’s snorkeling, scuba diving, and canoeing in the area.

The Theater of the Sea is a must-visit if you’d like to get up close and personal with dolphins and sea lions, witness parrot shows, and more.

Visit the Islamorada Brewery and Distillery for great craft brews and a meal. And, if you’d like a souvenir to take back, drop by the Rain Barrell Village and explore the work of local artists.

7. Lovers Key Florida

It’s no surprise that Florida has many romantic getaways due to its coastal atmosphere.

Lovers Key is a place fitting for lovers with its beach and State Park, perfect for romantic walks and picnics. After all, there’s no better feeling than walking hand-in-hand with your partner across a sunset.

Lounge under an umbrella on the shore and enjoy the calm, turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico or walk through the lovely trails with views of untouched flora and fauna. You can even take your boat out onto the Gulf and enjoy quality time fishing or paddling through the canals.

8. Savannah Georgia

A quintessential city on Georgia’s coast, Savannah is draped in history and romance, just as the trees there are draped with Spanish moss. The historic squares, charming architecture, and beautiful mansions are worth admiring.

On your romantic stroll through the famous Historic District, drop into Wet Willie’s on River Street and hold onto a refreshing frozen daiquiri while you continue strolling.

If you’re a foodie couple, you’ll love the options here. I recommend breakfast at The Collins Quarter and dinner at The Olde Pink House (a popular place in an 18th-century mansion) with live entertainment and outdoor dining options.

Finish your evening with some dessert at Leopold’s Ice Cream; they have splendid choices.

As for accommodations, nothing can beat Savannah’s most eclectic hotel – Mansion on Forsyth Park ; it is sheer perfection inside out.

9. Blue Ridge Mountains

The mountains are calling, and all couples in love deserve a romantic mountain getaway at least once.

The ultimate romantic experience would be a road trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains. For your secluded mountain getaway, a mountain cabin is a perfect pick. The several options include Almost Heaven and Belcamp Cabins , among others.

Or, you could go for the all-in-one experience and stay at Serenity in the Mountains . They provide couples massages in a treehouse and have luxury suites.

10. Jekyll Island Georgia

Jekyll Island, an escape unlike any other, will get you and your partner more in love than ever with its Southern charm, abounding peace, and serenity.

I’ve been absolutely mesmerized by the Gilded Age feel of Jekyll Island Club Resort and can’t recommend anything better. You can stay at any of their three distinct resorts – Jekyll Island Club, Island Cottages, and Jekyll Ocean Club.

Pools, pristine beaches, miles of bike-paved paths, and the iconic Clubhouse croquet field will keep you occupied.

Sip a hand-crafted classic cocktail at The Bar or enjoy some oceanfront, open-air dining at Eighty Ocean Kitchen and Bar for some coastal Georgia fare and local favorites.

11. New Orleans Louisiana

New Orleans, aka the Big Easy, will enchant any couple with its charm.

A romantic stroll around the enchanting Garden District and the French Quarter with impressive architecture would make for some quality time. Even better is a tour in a horse-drawn carriage.

Quaint Creole cottages strewn throughout the city, unique jewelry shops, and beignets with coffee, New Orleans is all this and more.

The Chloe Restaurant has some delicious Creole cuisine, and the ambiance at N7 (a small, homey cafe) will make you want to cozy up with your partner.

Sitting along the historic St. Charles Avenue, The Chloe (a boutique hotel) will give you intimacy on your romantic staycation.

12. Beaches in Mississippi

With a short yet stunning coastline, coastal Mississippi, with its stunning beaches, makes for great fun in the sun for couples.

From fun outdoor activities and wonderful meals to phenomenal beach sunsets, Biloxi, Gulfport Beach, and Horn Island are some of coastal Mississippi’s offerings.

You and your partner will enjoy your experience here for a romantic weekend or an anniversary special. Visit Biloxi for a romantic steamboat tour, watersports, a lighthouse, and casinos.

You can stay at the Golden Nugget Biloxi ; they have a spa, casino, wellness center, four restaurants, and a bar. For a quiet and less crowded place, Horn Island is more appropriate.

The Half Shell Oyster House of Biloxi is a popular restaurant for great food.

13. Oxford Mississippi

Otherwise known as the “Cultural Mecca of the South,” Oxford makes a great romantic getaway with its small-town charm and exceptional culinary experiences.

This is one for the literary enthusiast couple. Spend time together visiting William Faulkner’s lush mansion, Rowan Oak, and the University of Mississippi Museum. Don’t miss out on Square Books to pick something to read on your journey home.

Dine at fine Oxford restaurants with your better half, like City Grocery and Chancellor’s Grill. For a lovely luxury boutique hotel, stay at Chancellor’s House ; it blends the comforts of a luxury hotel with the intimacy of a quiet boutique hotel right in the heart of Oxford.

14. Asheville North Carolina

Nestled amidst the enchanting Blue Ridge Mountains, the beautiful city of Asheville offers couples a romantic getaway worth revisiting.

Rightly named the “Crown of the Blue Ridge,” it’s an experience you mustn’t miss. Stay at the Chetola Resort for the beautiful lake views and cozy up by the fireplace in your room. The spa service at the Bob Timberlake Inn and the excellent food from Timberlake’s add to the joy.

Try skiing together at Appalachian Ski Mtn, with a vertical drop of 365 feet, and visit the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum for some cultural enrichment.

For a postcard-perfect romantic getaway, Charleston is the stop.

Visit the Cypress Gardens for all things romantic, with foliage, butterflies, and birds. A sunset sail in Charleston Harbor and romantic strolls through the gaslit streets, cobblestone alleyways, and past colorful homes will have you longing for more.

The elegant Southern charm of Charleston is juxtaposed with snappy street fashion and contemporary art. For a beachy weekend, visit Isle of Palms or Folly Beach, seeing as Charleston is by the ocean.

You can shop in King Street, visit the Charleston Tea Garden, the Waterfront Park along the Cooper River, and stay at The Dewberry .

Among Charleston’s biggest draws is its eats scene. Dine at high-end favorites like Husk and Fig or traditional brunch staples like Poogan’s Porch or Magnolias .

17. Beaufort South Carolina

Beaufort is more than a hidden Lowcountry gem; it’s a transformative destination that has charmed visitors since 1512.

Tucked into historic, winding streets with frames of natural foliage and centuries-old, moss-draped oak trees, Beaufort is a worthy destination for a romantic getaway.

This quaint waterfront town is brimming with entertaining activities. A kayak or stand-up paddleboard outing lets you see the North Carolina coast (courtesy Beaufort Paddle).

A romantic stroll in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park brings you and your sweetheart to the water-facing swings to watch the boats enter the marina. You could also meander through the art galleries, antique shops, and main street’s boutiques.

Stay at The Anchorage Inn ; it has waterfront views and luxurious four-poster beds and is conveniently located in the city’s heart. For a magical sunset cruise, rent a charter boat to the cozy waterfront restaurant – Saltus River Grill .

18. Daufuskie Island South Carolina

A small sea island tucked between Savannah and Hilton Head Island, Daufuskie Island is a paradise beyond.

This is where very little happens, making it the perfect romantic getaway. A ferry is the only way to get to this island, which is best explored by golf cart or bicycle.

The island’s attractions include The Iron Fish Gallery, Silver Dew Winery, and the island’s own rum factory – Daufuskie Island Distillery. There’s also the Daufuskie Blues, the Oyster Union Society Hall, and the Bloody Point Golf Club (with an 18-hole course).

Drop into The Old Daufuskie Crab Company for a funky, relaxed bar and grill.

I can’t recommend a better place than Haig Point for your romantic stay, with their restaurant Calibogue Club for some fine dining.

19. Georgetown South Carolina

South Carolina’s hidden gem – Georgetown is a small Southern coastal town filled with history, charm, and personality and is an hour’s drive northeast of Charleston.

You’ll enjoy the sparkling waterways, vibrant shop fronts, sprawling live oak canopies, and historic homes with gracious porches here.

There’s no place like the town’s only boutique hotel – 620 Prince , for a romantic stay. It’s an 1882 construction, yet it has a modern feel.

Strolling down Front Street and Harborwalk will bring you to funky boutiques and high-end furniture shops. Georgetown has no shortage of fishing charters if you want to go fishing with your partner.

The mouth-watering food at Root includes American cuisine with local roots, seafood, and meat, a full bar, and a gorgeous sunset view with their waterfront dining.

20. Memphis Tennesse

The vibrant city of Memphis, on the banks of the Mississippi River, is not only a getaway for art lovers but also the ones in love.

A romantic stroll through the Memphis Botanic Gardens, a romantic carriage ride through the neon-lit city after dark, a trip to the historic Beale Street, and a visit to the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; there’s a lot to do in Memphis.

For your romantic stay, go for The Peabody Hotel , which combines an old-world charm with modern conveniences. At Chez Philippe, you can dine on classic gourmet French cuisine.

Don’t miss the craft beer, local BBQ, and a visit to a Blues club for some real Memphis feels.

21. Gatlinburg Tennesse

A top honeymoon destination, Gatlinburg, tucked away in the Smoky Mountains, has stunning mountain scenery.

For the adventurous, outdoorsy couple, there’s white water rafting, ziplining, camping, or fishing. The aerial tramway will take you to the all-seasons mountaintop recreation and amusement park.

Other places worth visiting include the SkyTrail hiking path, SkyDeck amphitheater, SkyCenter mountain shop, and the Tulip Tower observation area. The Pigeon Forge also has many small, unique shops if you’d love to go shopping with your boo.

Park Vista is a great place to stay, with beautiful views of the Smoky Mountains. As for dining, try Mellow Mushroom , Ole Red , or The Melting Pot for a romantic dinner.

22. Pigeon Forge Tennesse

A moment can last a lifetime in this little mountain town at the foothills of the Smoky Mountains.

In Pigeon Forge, you have breathtaking mountain views and the thrill of a classic carnival ride with The Great Smoky Mountain Wheel. You can also indulge in a range of activities, including white water rafting, a game of golf, horse riding, hiking, and ziplining, to name a few.

1. Savannah, Georgia

With well-preserved architecture and oaks dripping with Spanish moss, Savannah is easy to fall in love with. A spotlight has been thrown on the city’s dining scene in recent years; splashy new openings like The Grey and Common Thread have impressed diners with their Southern hospitality and memorable takes on Georgia-grown ingredients.

2. Bowling Green, Kentucky

For some people, Bowling Green’s appeal can be summed up in two words: cars and caves. At the National Corvette Museum, even non-auto geeks might drool at the mint-condition models and prototypes of America’s most famous car. (Schedule an assembly plant tour if you want to see these babies in production.) The scenic riverside city leaves a mark on visitors with its mountain scenery and booming downtown filled with hotels, barbecue joints, and hot spots like Easy Bistro & Bar, a French restaurant and raw bar that makes full use of Southern ingredients (regulars love the charcuterie board). At Lookout Mountain, you can behold an underground waterfall and test your nerves on one of the world’s steepest passenger railroads.

4. Wilmington, North Carolina

Dawson’s Creek and other TV and film productions may have put Wilmington on the map, but there’s so much more to this lively riverfront city than Hollywood ties. Stroll the Riverwalk to the skylit Old Wilmington City Market and the rambling Cotton Exchange, a shopping and dining complex spread over several historic buildings. Get Airlie Gardens tickets in advance to see 100,000 azalea trees and a live oak dating back to the 1500s. Wrightsville Beach is 10 minutes away by car, and many other powdery island options are just a bit further. Natchez, Mississippi is packed with history. Spend time at the Natchez Museum of African American History and Culture and the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, a museum park with prehistoric Native American mounds. Riverboat gambling and annual festivals celebrating literature, film, and music are also big draws. The Natchez Trace — one of the most beautiful places in the country — kicks off here for its 444-mile journey to Nashville.

7. Asheville, North Carolina

This bohemian small city in the North Carolina mountains has been a favorite getaway for over a century. The best Asheville itinerary? Eat, hike, eat again, shop indie, drink a microbrew, repeat. Seasonal and sustainable fare is front and center on local menus, with faves like Rhubarb, Sovereign Remedies, and Cucina 24 making the most of the Appalachian bounty. To work off a meal (and build your appetite back up for the next), try Craggy Pinnacle, a hike popular for the amazing views from its summit, especially when the mountains are ablaze with turning leaves in fall.

You might think everything you need to know about Hot Springs is right there in the name. Yes, you’re probably here to “take the waters” in Hot Springs National Park . Yet there are also plenty of non-aquatic activities like hiking (including the 26 miles of trails throughout the national park), exploring the lovely Garvan Woodland Gardens, going on a self-guided downtown Art Deco tour, and more.

9. Charleston, South Carolina

If Southern hospitality had an absolute epicenter, it’d be Charleston, South Carolina . The city is the real deal in one walkable package, known for candy-colored homes fronted by palmettos and lush gardens shaded by oaks. Yet the city isn’t exactly frozen in time; Charleston’s culinary and shopping scenes are very much of the here and now, and there's always a new hotel to check out.

10. Louisville, Kentucky

If you like baseball, bourbon, bluegrass, and yes, horses, Louisville is for you. Hop on the bourbon trail at Stitzel-Weller Distillery, a historic distillery now offering tastings, mixology classes, and more. Then trade the malty aroma of local distilleries for the fresh greenery of Central Park or the cool air of Louisville Mega Caverns, where you can go on an underground zip line 100 feet above the canyon floor. Bed down at museum hotel 21c or the Grady Hotel, a swanky new boutique hotel in an 1883 building whose former tenants included the original designer for Kentucky Derby hats.

11. Bryson City, North Carolina

The town of Bryson City, North Carolina may be small (population: 1,500), but it's big on outdoor fun. Sitting just south of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Bryson City is a charming little mountain hub for hiking (the national park’s Deep Creek Trail is a favorite), horseback riding, zip lining, brewery-going, and scenic-steam-train-riding. A required stop is The Bistro at the Everett Hotel , right on the town’s main square; the local trout cakes and meatloaf make a welcome meal after a big day in the great outdoors.

12. Nashville, Tennessee

The Nashville renaissance shows no sign of slowing down. Neon-lit honky-tonks partying 'til the wee hours, country superstars taking the Grand Ole Opry stage, a booming food landscape encompassing everything from closely guarded hot-chicken recipes and venerable shrines to Southern cooking to James Beard Award-winning kitchens — Nashville’s star just keeps getting brighter. Drop your bags at the newly revitalized Hermitage Hotel and get on the dance floor.

13. Saint Simons Island, Georgia

Drive an hour and a half south of Savannah and you find yourself on Saint Simons Island, part of Georgia’s Golden Isles chain. Mother nature runs the show here, and it’s not always easy to tell where the land ends and the water begins. Expect rivers and creeks surrounded by salt marsh, live oak trees draped with moss (best seen at Avenue of the Oaks), and knockout beaches sweeping along the Atlantic. All that nature time can be peppered with (extremely scenic) golfing, biking, fishing, and visiting an impressive slew of historic sites.

14. Amelia Island, Florida

Welcome to the quieter side of Florida. This sweet barrier island promises shimmering quartz beaches, towering sand dunes, peaceful bike paths, kayak-ready waterways, and a darling historic downtown area. Low-key and laid-back are a lifestyle here, though things pick up considerably during the annual car show (March), shrimp festival (April-May), and pétanque championship (November).

15. Roanoke, Virginia

Tucked into Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke, also known as “Star City,” is well-known in the area for its small-town charm, Appalachian heritage, and gorgeous mountain views. Mill Mountain Park is home to a zoo, wildflower garden, and hiking trails, and it's topped with a 100-foot steel-and-concrete mountaintop star, illuminated and visible for miles. From there, it’s just three miles to the antique cars and trains at the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Rockwells and Sargents at the (free!) Taubman Museum of Art.

16. Ocracoke, North Carolina

Getting to Ocracoke requires a bit of work. An island in North Carolina’s remote Outer Banks , Ocracoke is only accessible by boat or ferry, but those who make the journey are rewarded with sugar-white sands and a bustling coastal village. This is a true escape as nearly all of the island is protected by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

17. Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Hikers, drivers, birders, backpackers, anglers, equestrians, astronomy lovers — there’s something for everyone at Shenandoah National Park. Part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the park features famous Skyline Drive, a white-knuckle mountaintop ribbon of asphalt; wooded hollows; hundreds of miles of hiking and horse-riding trails; and nearly 100 mountain fishing streams. For epic stargazing, camp or stay at the lodges near Big Meadows.

18. Macon, Georgia

The birthplace of Otis Redding and Little Richard, the adopted home of the Allman Brothers, and the hometown of country star Jason Aldean, Macon is a small town that’s made a big dent in history — musical and otherwise. It’s home to prehistoric Indigenous sites, thousands of National Register-listed buildings, and the Tubman Museum honoring African American art and culture. It’s not called the “Festival Capital of Georgia” for nothing: Events celebrating music, film, Indigenous culture, sports, and more dominate the Macon calendar.

19. Oxford, Mississippi

Oxford is most famous for being the home of William Faulkner. For decades, the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner based his life at Rowan Oak, an 1840s Greek Revival mansion. On a self-guided tour, you can wander around the home at your leisure, seeing his typewriter and the plot outline for “A Fable” scribbled on the wall of his study. From the house, take the forested Bailey’s Woods trail to the University of Mississippi Art Museum to see works by Georgia O’Keefe and Man Ray.

20. Orange Beach, Alabama

As far as Gulf beach vacations go, Florida gets all the love, but check out this oft-overlooked neighboring town just over the state line. Laid-back Orange Beach offers the same unbeatable sugar-soft shoreline, plus family-friendly amusement and water parks, dolphin cruises, nature trails, championship golf, fishing excursions, and free concerts.

21. Memphis, Tennessee

In Memphis, the door is always open for barbecue lovers and music fans. The city’s Beale Street is a rowdy neon stream of flashing lights, club-hopping pedestrians (this is the one place in the state you can walk around with your drink), and the yowls of electric guitars pouring out of blues joints. Two essential Memphis stops are Sun Records, the studio where Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded, and Graceland, Elvis’ private mansion and frozen-in-time stronghold of midcentury kitsch.

22. Key West, Florida

Brimming with “Floribbean” flavor, Key West in the Florida Keys is so special, it almost doesn’t feel real. This coral island 100 miles from the mainland is a sun-soaked playground of tiki drinks, bike rides, Cuban sandwiches, key lime pies, and quirky Bahamian-inspired cottages. It’s where Tennessee Williams said he worked best, where Ernest Hemingway came from Paris to “dry out his bones” (and then remained for nearly a decade), and from where the first international passenger flight was made when Pan American Airways jetted seven riders to Havana in 1928. Today, the airline’s former headquarters is the sort of easy-breezy restaurant and bar where you could while away an afternoon with fish tacos and a key lime margarita.

23. Washington, D.C.

Monuments and museums (and for a few fleeting weeks in spring, cherry blossoms) may be what get you there, but once you see how rich D.C.’s cultural offerings are, you might just want to extend your stay. Walker-friendly neighborhoods like Georgetown and Dupont Circle, hiking and picnicking at Rock Creek Park, and a surprisingly hip nightlife and food scene are just some of the surprises the town has up its sleeve.

24. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Savannah, Georgia

We will never stop singing the praises of Savannah: not only is it one of the best weekend getaways in the south, but it’s also one of our favorite cities in the USA!

Featuring absolutely stunning architecture, 22 of its original 24 town squares, endless oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, and some of the best food in the country, spending a few days in Savannah is bound to be a delight.

While you’re there, be sure to check out Forsyth Park, hear some of the city’s most enduring legends on a ghost tour, enjoy views from River Street, and take in some of Savannah’s complex history at its various house museums and houses of worship.

You also can’t miss the chance to meander down beautiful Jones Street, often recognized as one of the most beautiful streets in America and one of the most charming photo spots in Savannah .

Birmingham, Alabama

Historic Birmingham is a perfect weekend trip in the south for anyone looking to dig deeper into American history.

Alabama’s biggest city played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement, and its historic sites are enshrined in the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument.

This national monument, created by President Obama during the final days of his administration, encompasses the 16th Street Baptist Church, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park, the Gaston Motel, and the immediate vicinity.

The Birmingham Civil Rights movement was one of the most important cities in the US for the fight for desegregation, and many of the most important events in the city happened or were planned in these few city blocks.

You can visit the church and park for free, but I highly recommend visiting the museum at the BCRI first so you understand the full context of what’s you’re seeing.

Beyond the city’s important historic sites, you can enjoy the great mix of classic Southern food and a burgeoning international food scene.

With influences from Spanish, French, West African, Caribbean, Native American, and Southern cultures you can find one of the most unique personalities a destination has to offer through its architecture, culinary, and music scene.

From strolling the beautiful streets through the historic French Quarter to admiring the incredible mansions and giant weeping willow trees in the Garden District to eating your way through the Creole cuisine and food scene to satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets, New Orleans is a destination that constantly reminds you of just how unique it is.

If you are looking for a weekend destination in the sunshine state, St Petersburg will be ideal!

Located a mere 30 minutes away from Tampa, St Petersburg is mainly known for its beaches and relaxed vibe.

There are many things to do in St Pete .

If you head downtown, you will find many bars and restaurants on central avenue. It’s also a great place for shoppers especially if you like small independent shops.

St Pete is also home to one of the best museums in the USA, the Dali Museum, as well as a memorable and moving Holocaust Museum.

Finally, if you wish to see a concert in a very cool venue, Jannus Live is for you! This open-air venue is very unique.

If you want to go to the beach (and so you should! After all, we are in Florida), head to St Pete Beach or Treasure Island.

If you are driving, you can also go to Clearwater Beach (often ranked as the #1 Beach in the USA) or Honeymoon Island if you want something more natural.

You will also find a few walks on Honeymoon and Caladesi Island, perfect if you want to see ospreys and American eagles!

St. Pete is the perfect destination for a relaxing and sunny weekend, and absolutely one of the best places to visit in the south.

Atlanta, Georgia

Officially established in 1847, Atlanta, Georgia is the capital of the state and a charming city to visit.

Throughout its history, it has been a center for the Civil Rights Movement and played a large role in the Civil War.

Present-day, some of the film industry has migrated to Atlanta from California.

Many popular movies such as The Hunger Games series and Avengers Endgame were filmed in Atlanta.

With so many fun and unique things to do, Atlanta is a perfect destination for a weekend trip in the southern United States .

Mobile, Alabama oozes southern hospitality and charm, and it also has a fascinating history, great local restaurants , and some lively festivals.

It often gets overlooked in favor of nearby New Orleans, but for couples and families, it may actually be a better option, providing many of the same attractions without the wild and raucous party atmosphere that can plague Bourbon Street in NOLA.

Though it’s now part of Alabama, Mobile was the original capital of the French Louisiana Territory, and you will see plenty of French influence like wrought-iron balconies in the architecture of the downtown buildings.

Mardi Gras is also a big deal here, and Mobilians will proudly let you know that their city is home to the oldest Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States!

Parades last for about two weeks and feature people in colorful costumes throwing moon pies and beaded necklaces to the excited crowd.

It’s a pretty family-friendly affair, though, and a highlight of the year for kids and adults alike.

St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine, Florida is the perfect weekend getaway in the southern USA. Whether you like history (it is the oldest city in the US, after all), shopping, or the outdoors, it’s perfect and there is plenty to do.

There are plenty of activities in St. Augustine to keep you busy for a southern weekend trip.

If you like cities and being in the hustle and bustle of it all, some of the best things to do in St. Augustine include visiting the San Sebastian Winery, walking around the Old Town and visiting the shops, and doing a ghost tour one night.

If you’re a bit of a history buff, make sure to visit Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine Lighthouse, and Fort Matanzas.

If you like the outdoors, visit Anastasia State Park, St. Augustine Beach, and go Geocaching.

Of course, the best thing is to do all of those or a combination of all of them.

It would be very easy to do everything in one weekend since St. Augustine is a small city and a lot of it is all very close together.

There are hotels downtown, but if you’re on more of a budget, you’ll probably want to stay a little further from the Old Town area.

There are also tons of cute Airbnbs in the city if you want a more local experience.

The Floridian is one of the best places to eat and Crucial Coffee is a must-see. It’s a coffee shop across from Castillo de San Marcos in a building from the 1800s.

St. Augustine is the perfect hip but historic, cool, and unique city for a long weekend for so many reasons, and even if you’re not interested in the historic aspect that much, it’s still one of the best places to visit in the south.

Raleigh, North Carolina

Raleigh is home to world-class museums and a handful of makers with an eye toward quality and craft.

5,500-acre Jekyll Island is the smallest of Georgia’s barrier islands, but it packs in a lot of natural beauty as well as opportunities for fun and relaxation.

It’s also easy to access–it’s only a 90-minute drive from either Savannah, Georgia , or Jacksonville, Florida, and connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Once on the island, you can enjoy 10 miles of pristine beaches, as well as four golf courses, 20 miles of bike paths, some of the best bird watching in the U.S., and water sports like boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Family-friendly activities include the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, the state’s only sea turtle education and rehabilitation facility, and the Summer Waves Water Park.

The island also has a fascinating history–it served as a private winter getaway for some of the nation’s richest families from 1888 to 1942.

Today, you can tour the 250-acre historic district, which features 33 preserved buildings that date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

While there are a few hundred year-round residents who live on Jekyll Island, most of the land is preserved, so there hasn’t been much new construction since the 1960s.

There are, however, 10 hotels plus a campground, about two dozen restaurants and plenty of shops.

There are so many amazing, beautiful, and unique places to visit in the South of the United States. The southern states consist of a large chunk of the U.S. so if you plan on doing any major traveling in this country, you are bound to end up in the South at some point. And you are in for a treat once you arrive!

Whether you are taking a southern road trip, exploring a specific state, or want to cross off another U.S. National Park, whatever brings you to the South will be well worth the trip! There are so many things to do here from fun, history-rich cities to gorgeous natural landscapes. You are sure to make some great memories as you discover what these states have to offer.

Providence Canyon, Georgia

Providence Canyon State Park provides one of the best landscapes in Georgia and is 100% worth the visit if you are in the state. Known as Georgia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” the Providence Canyon makes a great day trip for nature lovers and hikers.

With over one thousand acres to explore, you will have so much fun searching out the best photo spots. The soil here is an array of pink, orange, red, and purple, creating an otherworldly appearance you will fall in love with.

If you want to check out the hiking trails, there are many to chose from with varying levels of difficulty. There are many scenic overlooks that give a view of the many gullies, the deepest of which is at 150 feet. If you visit in July or August, look for the rare Plumleaf Azalea flower blooming. You can camp at this park as well if you want to stay longer in the pretty area.

Ginnie Springs, Florida

Ginnie Springs is truly a beautiful hot spring oasis in Florida! With shockingly blue, crystal clear water, you will feel as if you have traveled to paradise. If you are looking for a place to relax, this is one of the best places in the South.

Spend time swimming, tubing, or paddle boarding in this consistent 72 degree Fahrenheit water. If you are scuba trained, this is a great place to go diving as well as there are many caves to explore.

Ginnie Springs can get quite busy in the summer due to its popularity, but if you visit in the spring or fall, you can avoid the worst of the crowds. The area is also fairly good-sized, so it is possible to find a little corner to yourself. If you want to make a weekend out of visiting the springs, you can stay at the campground.

Jacob’s Well, Texas

The Jacob’s Well Natural Area is about an hour southwest of Austin, Texas, and can be visited as a day trip from the city. Jacob’s Well is the second-largest completely submerged cave in Texas. This 81-acre area is free to visit unless you plan on swimming, in which case you need to pay a fee and reserve a time. Taking a dip here is a great way to cool off in the summer heat. The water stays at a constant 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Swimming is allowed from May until September.

Along with swimming, Jacob’s Well is a great place for hiking and bird watching. It is also possible to go on an hour-long tour with a naturalist guide. This is a great way to learn about the nature of the area along with the history of Jacob’s Well and the aquifer system. Tours are by request only on two Saturdays each month. You can also stop by the Nature Center any weekend.

Cummins Falls State Park, Tennessee

About an hour and a half from Nashville, you will find the pretty and tranquil Cummins Falls State Park. This is a great stop to make if you are doing a Tennessee road trip and love exploring nature. The beautiful Cummins Falls is a 75-foot waterfall that cascades down a cool rock base before ending in a swimming hole.

It is important to note that you do need to get a Gorge Access Permit before you begin your hike to the waterfall. The hike itself is relatively strenuous and involves traversing uneven ground, crossing water, and climbing rocks.

Because of this, it is not recommended for really young kids. However, the hike is very much worth it when you get to see the falls and cool off with a dip in the water. If you do not want to hike into the gorge, there is a viewpoint above it where you can get a great look.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is a must for any Georgia road trip! This is a city full of Southern charm, from its cobblestone streets to the Spanish moss covering the oak trees. This is the perfect city to escape to for people with any hobby or interest. History buffs will love exploring Old Fort Jackson or learning about the city’s past on an Old Savannah Trolly Tour.

If you are into architecture, you will really love checking out the Victorian district, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, or the Mercer Williams House. If you are traveling with kids and want some family-friendly fun, head over to pretty Forsyth Park or consider booking a river cruise on an iconic steamboat. No matter what you do in Savannah, you are sure to have a great time!

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is a vibrant, fun city where you can easily spend a couple of days or over a week. There is just so much to do and see! Start your stay here by familiarizing yourself with the city by walking the pretty streets and exploring the famous French Quarter. If you love photographing beautiful streets and buildings, then you will adore NOLA! There are so many balconies and amazing, Southern-styled architecture.

New Orleans is also one of the best cities in the South for food! It is really a destination for foodies who want to try French Creole cuisine, check out cute cafes, or even just bar hop.

When you are not stuffing your face with beignets, you can ride the streetcar, walk along the Mississippi River, or visit the Saint Louis Cathedral. When night falls, head to Bourbon Street to soak in the party atmosphere.

Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

In Arkansas, you will find Hot Springs National Park, which has some of the best hot springs in the U.S. Take a dip in the natural, thermal hot springs from inside one of the historic bathhouses.

While you can’t soak outside, you can still touch the fresh water in a couple of outdoor pools. The 4,000-year-old, protected spring water is drinkable so make sure to stock up on water by filling bottles at some of the many fountains.

While you are here, make sure to check out the Fordyce Bathhouse Museum and Visitor Center to learn about the history of the baths. The Hot Springs Mountain Tower is another thing to check out is you love great views. The open-air observation deck will provide views of the mountains and forest. There are also a few hiking and biking trails that will weave you through the nature of the park.

Stephens Gap, Alabama

The Stephens Gap Callahan Cave Preserve is one of the best places in the Southeast and can be found about two hours north of Birmingham, Alabama.

It is a very cool place to visit if you love exploring unique nature locations. Stephens Gap is one of the most photographed caves in the country and it is no wonder why! It is so pretty here! The cave features a waterfall that cascades into a deep pit.

The cave has two entrances, one for hikers and one for people who are trained in repelling. Because of the position of the entrances, there is often light streaming into the darkness, creating an awesome scene. The hike is about a mile and a half round trip and is moderate difficulty. There are steep and slippery areas, so be careful and wear appropriate shoes. If you are repelling, you must bring your own gear. However you plan to visit, you must get a free permit.

Helen, Georgia

Helen, Georgia is hands down one of the cutest small towns in The South and you will instantly fall in love with its charm. This tiny town has German roots, a fact that will quickly become apparent by the architecture.

You will feel as if you are walking through an Alpine village. Come in summer to enjoy the surrounding great outdoors or plan your visit for December for European Christmas market vibes.

Even though the town only holds a population of about 550 people, it also home to a ton of fun activities. You can go zip-lining in the trees, tubing in the river, fly into the sky in a hot air balloon, or even pan for gold. In town, shopping is a great pastime, especially if Christmas is soon. Make sure to check out all of the cute, local artisan and treat shops.

Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Tennessee

There is a reason the Great Smokey Mountains are the most visited National Park in the U.S. The over half million-acre park is absolutely gorgeous, especially in the fall when the foliage is set ablaze.

If nature is your happy place, then you are sure to love the Great Smokey Mountains! Spend a few days here hiking scenic trails, horseback riding, exploring historic sites, and spotting wildlife, including the possibility of black bears.

You can camp in the park or you can stay in one of the cute, mountain towns on the park’s outskirts. Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are two popular options. These towns act as a gateway to the surrounding nature and have a host of fun things to do as well. The Great Smokey Mountains are not only one of the best places to visit in the South, but the U.S. in general. It is a popular road trip destination that you simply must visit at least once!

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina is a lovely coastal city with plenty of Southern charm, pretty architecture, and historic points of interest. There is truly something here for everyone, making this city a top place to visit in the South. Also, did we mention the food?! This is a city full of great eats and we suggest taking a food tour to get a bite of all the best Southern food the city has to offer!

When you are full from eating your way through Charleston, relax on a horse-drawn carriage tour of the city or a boat cruise of the harbor. If you are into history or architecture, then check out the Fort Sumter National Monument, the McLeod Plantation Historic Site, or the Citadel. If you are traveling with kids you might have fun at the Joe Riley Waterfront Park, the South Carolina Aquarium, or the Magnolia Plantation & Gardens.

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

Shenandoah National Park is a great Southern getaway found in the wilderness of Virginia not far from Washington D.C. This is the perfect place to escape the city and become one with nature. There are over 500 miles of hiking trails to explore. Discover beautiful fields of colorful wildflowers, flowing waterfalls, and a plethora of wildlife including deer, birds, and black bears.

Along with hiking, you can spend your time in the park driving the scenic Skyline Drive, riding your bike, fishing tranquil mountain streams, rock climbing, or stargazing. Pretty much the list is endless! There is so much to see and experience here that you can easily spend a day or three here. If you are staying the night, you can camp or stay at a lodge.

Places to Visit in the South Shenandoah National Park

Upper Caney Creek Falls, Alabama

The hidden gem of Upper Caney Creek Falls is like a scene from a fairy tale. The hike to discover this sight is just under two miles round trip and is pretty easy. After wandering through the forest like a Disney princess, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the tiny, 20-foot waterfall dropping into the perfect swimming hole. Another cool feature of this waterfall is the fast that you can actually walk behind it because of the shape of the cliff. This gives you a new perspective and a great place to take photographs.

If you visit in the summer, the forest will be bright green and full of wildlife. The pool under the falls is usually a pretty, blue-green color. After enjoying the upper falls, you can choose to continue down the creek to find the Lower Caney Creek Falls. To find the trailhead to this secret place in Alabama, drive about an hour and twenty minutes northwest of Birmingham to the small town of Ashridge.

Everglades National Park, Florida

If you are planning a Florida road trip you have to go to the Everglades National Park ! Whether you want to check another National Park off your bucket list, are an avid birdwatcher, or just love to discover cool and unique landscapes, the Everglades are for you! This park features over two million acres of wetlands, saw-grass marshes, and mangrove forests. It is the only place in the wild where you can spot both American alligators and American crocodiles. It is also home to a ton of species of beautiful birds, snakes, and manatees.

While in the Everglades, enjoy waking scenic trails, taking an airboat ride , finding all of the best observation towers, and visiting the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. If you are exceptionally keen to see wild alligators , hike the short Anhinga Trail, which is one of the best places in the park to find these amazing creatures. Just be careful not to get too close!

Austin, Texas

A Texas road trip is sure to bring you to Austin, one of the best cities in the South. Known as the Live Music Capital of the World and with a slogan of “Keep Austin Weird”, this city is very hip. diverse, and full of music culture. Spend a couple of days here taking in the sights and just overall having a blast. Head to Sixth Street to soak in the vibe of the city as you bar hop and listen to live bands.

If you are into art or history, make sure to visit some of the city’s museums, including the Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Blanton Museum of Art, or the Mexic-Arte Museum. If you are looking for a place to relax and cool off, the Barton Springs Municipal Pool is the place for you. The natural, spring-fed pool is found in the pretty Zilker Park.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville, North Carolina is another Southern city worth visiting! This is a popular travel destination for a number of reasons. For one, the cute city is surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy “America’s favorite drive” on the Blue Ridge Parkway as you twist through the mountains to find hiking trails and gorgeous scenic vistas. The nearby French Broad River gives tourists a place to go tubing, boating, or fishing.

When you are not exploring the encompassing nature, you will want to wander the cool city. Known for its art scene, Asheville is a hip city full of unique shops, outdoor markets, craft breweries, and local art galleries. Take a trolley tour to learn the history of the city or enjoy a delicious food tour. Another way to step into the past is to visit the Biltmore mansion, which was built by George W. Vanderbilt in the 1890s.

Anyone interested in science or space will want to take a day trip to the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral. When you are ready to relax and unwind, head out of the city to Blue Springs State Park or Rock Springs at Kelly Park.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Big Bend National Park is another place to stop in Texas . Since it is found on the border with Mexico, make sure to pack your passport if you want to make a stop in another country and visit some cute, small towns. The park itself is a prime desert and mountain location. This is a great place to camp, hike, and photograph nature.

One of the best hiking trails is found at Santa Elena Canyon. This two mile round trip hike will provide amazing views. This park also has historic ruins to discover, including a mine, a house, and a post office. When your muscles start to ache from hiking and adventuring, head to the Hot Springs Historic Trail by the Rio Grande to soak in natural hot springs while taking in great views of the river.

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is a great place to visit in the South if you love music or having fun in general! It is, of course, known as the Music City and is drenched in music culture. The entertainment district on Low Broadway is full of honky-tonks, themed restaurants, bars, and shops. You will also find the Country Music Hall of Fame here as well. If you want to learn the history of the area, consider taking a walking tour.

While in Nashville, you can also check out the historic Ryman Auditorium, explore pretty parks, or learn about science and history at museums. If you are up for an hour and a half drive, you can head down to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Nashville is a great city to explore as a family or as a friend’s getaway. No matter what you are interested in, there is something for you!

Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia

The gorgeous Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia is where you will find the ridge of Yonah Mountain, whose name translates to Bear in Cherokee. The hike to this mountain’s summit is just over two miles one way and is relatively easy. The views are to die for from the top! Come to this area in the fall to catch the mountain peak drenched in lovely golden foliage .

There are plenty of other things to do in Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest as well. There are over 800 miles worth of hiking trails to explore. Search for ancient petroglyphs and gorgeous waterfalls. You can also go canoeing, horseback riding, or camping. The Scull Shoals Historic Site features the state’s first paper mill dating back to 1811. Chattahoochee National Forest is near Helen, Georgia, so you could easily make a day trip from the small town.
