VCT 2023 to kick off with a 30-team international tournament in São Paulo, Brazil

The 2023 valorant champions tour circuit will feature at least seven international stops contested over lan. .

Game developer and tournament organizer Riot Games has revealed the VALORANT Champions Tour circuit calendar for 2023, with the first event in February having all yet-to-be-announced 30 partnered teams compete in a giant kickoff tournament in São Paulo, Brazil.

The new VCT 2023 circuit system will be headlined by three international leagues: EMEA, Pacific, and the Americas. Teams who meet the selection criteria will be provided with financial support from Riot Games in the form of an annual stipend as well as the exclusive chance to collaborate on unique in-game activations and products.

The international leagues will run with ten teams each on LAN in the following three cities:

  • EMEA – Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪
  • Pacific – Seoul, South Korea 🇰🇷
  • Americas – Los Angeles, USA 🇺🇸

VCT 2023

Instead of hosting the first split early in the year, the inaugural competition next year will kick off in February featuring all 30 partnered teams for three weeks of high-stakes play, with the winning side granting their regional league an additional berth at the first Masters tournament of the year.

Once the one-time kickoff tournament has concluded, the only other split for the year will follow in March, spanning eight weeks for all three regionals. Although the VCT 2023 season will only have one split in each regional league, it will feature two splits beginning in 2024.

The only split this year will allow partnered teams to first settle their operations in their respective host cities (Berlin for EMEA, Seoul for Pacific, and Los Angeles for Americas). In the meantime, the kickoff tournament will give a first look at all the new rosters and serve as a testing ground for all 30 partnered teams before they compete in their respective regional league.

“The VALORANT community’s passion inspired us to dream big and evolve the VALORANT Champions Tour to meet the overwhelming demand we’re seeing in every corner of the world,” said Whalen Rozelle, COO for Esports at Riot Games.

“In 2023, we’re taking everything we’ve learned, adding in new ideas and forming partnerships that will help us realize our dreams for the next edition of the VCT.”

Following the conclusion of the only split of the year, the top teams from each international league will then qualify for the Masters 2023 event in June, which will host an unconfirmed number of teams from each region. The top team from Masters will receive direct qualification to the most prestigious event of the year, Champions. Other teams will have the chance to qualify through the Last Chance Qualifiers in July. Only one team will secure the Champions berth in each of the three LCQ events.

Teams that do not make the international leagues can compete in Challengers, which is the second tier of competition below the international leagues, running concurrently with the first two splits. Each champion of the 21 sub-regional leagues, such as Challengers MY/SG and Challengers Korea, will be funneled into a Challengers Ascension tournament. Teams who secure a victory there will earn a spot in the following year’s international league.

Through the Challengers promotion system, the three international leagues will expand by one team each year, reaching a cap of 14 teams in 2027. Teams who win Challengers Ascension will be promoted to their region’s international league for two years.

Besides the main circuit, a global Game Changers Championship will return at the end of the year.

Valorant Champions Tour 2023 teams revealed

The 30 teams entering the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific leagues for VCT 2023 have some glaring omissions.

Watch eight minutes of Scorn, if your stomach can handle it

Featuring the game's "first grotesque puzzle".

Next year will be different. Riot recently announced that the Valorant Champions Tour 2023 will be making the shift into an international leagues format. Regional tournaments for the Americas, EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa), and the Pacific will host select franchise teams as they compete to be the best in their league before moving on to the worldwide Masters and Champions competitions.

Today, Riot unveiled which sides will form the core roster in each of its regions for the 2023 Champions Tour, and there are certainly a few eye-raising exceptions. Before we dive into any points of contention, here are the Valorant Champions Tour 2023 teams for each region.

Valorant Champions Tour 2023 teams - Americas

VCT 2023 teams americas

VCT’s Americas league brings North and South America together for fierce competition. With both USA and Brazil falling into the same competitive bracket, this looks to be one of the most tightly contested leagues in the block. Matches are set to take place in Los Angeles, USA.

Valorant Champions Tour 2023 teams - EMEA

VCT 2023 teams emea

EMEA has always been a hotbed of talent in the FPS genre, and Valorant is no exception. The likes of Fnatic and Team Liquid are no surprise, but there are plenty of new sides included with a chance to prove their worth when brought under the wide net of EMEA. Matches are set to take place in Berlin, Germany.

Valorant Champions Tour 2023 teams - Pacific

VCT 2023 teams pacific

Packing in the best from Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia and more, the Pacific region is looking particularly spicy as we head into 2023. DRX are certainly the top contenders so far, but can rivals like Paper Rex and Zeta Division take this chance to upset them? Matches will be hosted in Seoul, South Korea.

While future years will have two league seasons. The inaugural run in 2023 will see all 30 teams from the three regions invited to a massive kickoff tournament in Sao Paolo, Brazil, early next year.

Who is missing?

If you followed the recent conclusion to Valorant Champions 2022 , a few names will immediately stand out as absent. North America’s current top dogs of OpTic Gaming finished second in the world at the close of 2022, yet find themselves without a spot at the start of the 2023 season. Likewise EMEA’s FunPlus Phoenix, winners of Masters Copenhagen in 2022 are also missing, as are North America’s XSET.

In the studio’s team reveal blog post , Riot lays down the groundwork for the season, listing the core values teams needed to have to get accepted. The developer also noted that results weren’t a guarantee of entry:

“It’s worth addressing directly that while we respect and celebrate past competitive performance, it was not a key consideration in our decision - as we instead focused on an organization’s ability to create the most compelling VCT for fans in the future,” the post reads.

Those who didn’t make it in still have a shot through the year’s Challengers leagues. These will build upon in-game tournaments to help foster new talent and allow other sides to rise through the ranks and fight their way into international Valorant competition.

Riot Games reveals 2023 Valorant Champions Tour format, with kickoff event in Brazil

champions tour 2023 kickoff tournament

One of the most anticipated announcements of the year was released today, as Riot Games revealed its plans for the 2023 Valorant Champions Tour. And to get things started, the 30 initial partnered teams, as selected by the tour, will travel to São Paulo for the Kickoff Tournament.

The tour has been soliciting applications from esports organizations from all over the world to identify 30 teams for the tour’s kickoff. These partner teams will see substantial benefits, with team stipends, a revenue-share package and more. Additionally, Riot Games has also created a path for non-partnered teams to earn the same incentive package, with a highly developed tier-two system that can propel teams to the top of the tour.

“The Valorant community’s passion inspired us to dream big and evolve the Valorant Champions Tour to meet the overwhelming demand we’re seeing in every corner of the world,” said Whalen Rozelle, COO, esports at Riot Games. “Next year we’re excited to be operating more events than ever, both within our own studios for the international leagues, and with the help of third-party partners for our Challenger Leagues. Our goal is to bring our biggest events to new audiences so that fans can experience the electricity of live Valorant competition no matter where they live.”

Riot is setting up three major hubs of competition: Los Angeles, Seoul and Berlin. Regular-season matches and more will take place in these cities, with sources saying upgraded arenas may be in the works to facilitate events. Each location will feature on-site broadcast talent providing coverage in multiple languages for fans watching from around the world.

The São Paulo Kickoff Tournament tour’s first event starts in February and ends in early March. The team that places first will earn its league an extra slot at the first international event of the season, Masters.

THE DETAILS

champions tour 2023 kickoff tournament

Afterward, the first competitive split will start in-person with weekly competition in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Pacific and the Americas. International League matches take place in Berlin, Seoul, and Los Angeles. Beginning in March, this portion of the tour will see eight weeks of regular-season competition and crown three league champions in May.

However, subsequent seasons will feature two International League splits, but 2023 will supplement one split with the international tournament in order to provide teams with “adequate time to set up in their respective hub locations.”

June will see the second international tournament of the tour, Masters, showing off the best teams from each international league. The top teams from each region will get a direct bid to Champions, the Valorant world final.

Those teams that are close but haven’t yet received a bid to Champions will participate in the Last Chance Qualifiers. Each of the three LCQ qualifier winners will advance one team into Champions.

The VCT main event will culminate with Champions in August.

One of the most exciting parts of this announcement revealed that the proposed tier-two system — Challenger Circuit — will be playing in conjunction with the VCT season. Aspiring teams have a path where they can qualify for international competition for the 2024 season.

Two Challenger splits will begin in January and conclude with the Ascension tournaments in July. The rest of the best will play in tournaments taking place in more than twenty different Challenger leagues. These leagues will also be competing in-person for “regional pride and promotion into the international leagues.”

Adam Hadwin, a week ago, in his home country’s Canadian Open , didn’t cash. After rounds of 72 and 70, he missed the cut.

But things weren’t all bad.

He was also gifted something valuable.

A round with a pull cart.

He said last weekend he played Toronto Golf Club. No pressure. Just friends. Just pulling.

“I think every one of us [Canadians] always loves when we get north of the border,” Hadwin said this week. “Some of the other guys spend a little bit more time up there than I do. I’m rarely up there anymore. So it’s always nice to kind of cross and be amongst other Canadians, and obviously we get really good support.

“Yeah, it sucks to not play well, especially up there. I mean it sucks to miss cuts, but missing a cut in Canada is definitely up there with some of the worst. I got to spend some time with my mom, just kind of chill out, played Toronto Golf Club on Saturday, just relaxed.

“I was joking with the guys that I used a push cart around. I hadn’t done that in years, get back to what the game used to be for us growing up, just slugging it around yourself, hitting shots, having fun, enjoying company. The game can wear on you sometimes, and I think that I can lose sight of that sometimes with the best of ’em.”

Was playing that round, just pushing the push cart, helpful?

“Yeah, I think so,” said Hadwin, who entered Sunday’s final round of the Memorial tied for second. “I struggle sometimes to do those rounds. If I don’t play well, I kind of wonder why I’m out here. But, yeah, I think just kind of get back to what I used to do as a junior and as a young amateur when the game was not my livelihood and not how I paid bills or anything like that. Just go out and enjoy some good company and hack it around and hopefully hit a few good shots and kind of just enjoy the experience again.”

With that, you can check out the complete payout breakdown for this week’s Memorial, played at Muirfield Village Golf Club . The total purse is $20 million.

2024 Memorial Tournament leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler wins his fifth event of year, edging Collin Morikawa

Scheffler never pulled away sunday, but he did just enough to claim another trophy and massive check.

It is not that Scottie Scheffler's game is without its holes; it's simply that, when they emerge, Scheffler possesses plenty of plugs for them. Scheffler (-8) did exactly that over the weekend at Muirfield Village en route to his fifth PGA Tour victory of the season, a one-shot win over Collin Morikawa at the 2024 Memorial Tournament.

It was a familiar scene for Morikawa, who also played in the final Sunday pairing alongside Scheffler at the 2024 Masters. Scheffler won that one, too. This time around, it was a bit closer as Scheffler left the door open a handful of times during a punishing day in which the average score ballooned to nearly 75.

Scheffler shot 74, one better than that average and enough to defeat Morikawa to become the fastest golfer to reach five wins in a PGA Tour season since Tom Watson in 1980.

His play this week showcased not only the depth but the breadth of Scheffler's gifts. When his driver failed him, as it did Saturday when he hit a ball out of bounds on the par-4 9th hole (ultimately just the fifth triple bogey of his career), he was buoyed by the best approach game on the planet and a course management skillset that rivals anybody from the last 25 years.

When Scheffler left himself 16 feet for par Sunday on the par-3 16th hole -- with the tournament lingering in the balance -- he put the ball right in the center and one hand on the trophy. He needed it, too, as he made bogey on the next hole.

A player can get by and even win on the PGA Tour with one elite skill. But what if you have ... all of them?

In 2024, Scheffler has emerged as the best driver in the world and the best iron player in the world; he also ranks second behind only Hideki Matsuyama in strokes gained around the green, according to Data Golf. Throw in the course management and his toughness -- both mental and physical --  and even when you don't get his best stuff, you receive a floor of play that is far beyond most of the other best players in the world.

Sunday's victory was right out of Tiger Woods' playbook. (In fact, Scheffler became the first golfer since Woods in 2001 to win The Players Championship, the Masters and the Memorial in the same season.) Like Tiger, he built up an advantage over the first the first 54 holes and defended the trophy coming home. You don't have to win every event by 10 shots, and Scheffler used to his advantage everything he gained over the first 54 holes at the Memorial.

The result is five -- count 'em, five! -- wins in his last eight PGA Tour starts. Scheffler joins Justin Thomas (2017), Jason Day and Jordan Spieth (2015) as the only golfers to win 5+ over the last 10 years. Scheffler now has about three months to surpass them and potentially with an outside shot of joining the short list of 10 men who have won eight times or more in a single PGA Tour season.

Scheffler also blew past his all-time record of PGA Tour earnings in a single season record by collecting $4 million for this victory. He now sits at just over $24 million, about $3 million beyond what he earned a year ago.

Now, Scheffler marches to Pinehurst as a Tiger Woods-ian 3-1 favorite to win the U.S. Open. That's fitting, too. Because we have seen bits and pieces of greatness in these categories since Tiger returned from his apex around 2010, but we have not seen the full package since then like we have this season (and last season, too) with Scheffler. Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2024 Memorial Tournament.

2. Collin Morikawa (-7):  After a slow start to the year, Morikawa has been sneaky-good over the last two months. Every start beginning with the Masters has been a top 25, and he's now played in the final pairing on Sunday at the Masters, the PGA Championship and the Memorial. He's not really being talked about for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, but he absolutely should be. U.S. Opens should be the perfect major championship for his style, and every part of his game has been clicking. There's no shame in losing to Scheffler, and Morikawa seems close to PGA Tour win No. 7 (and perhaps major No. 3).  Grade: A

T15. Viktor Hovland (+2):  It was a tale of two tournaments for Hovland, who played his first 43 holes in 8 under and his last 29 in 10 over. Though his approach play was excellent all week, that volatility -- especially in his short game -- does not bode well for next week's U.S. Open. Hovland still seems to be mostly back, but this week was a bit of a check on the fact that he's not quite playing at the level that led to him winning the FedEx Cup nearly a year ago. He's close -- certainly closer than he was -- but clearly a step or two behind the end of 2023 edition of himself.  Grade: B-

MC. Jordan Spieth (+5):  Are you panicked? I'm not panicked. Are you panicked? (OK, I'm maybe a little bit panicked.) Spieth missed the cut at the Memorial, which was a bit difficult to do. Since his T6 at the Phoenix Open in February, Spieth has a DQ, five missed cuts, and just one top 25 finish. What's not working? He's been just average at everything other than driver (a bit shocking). I've never been more sure of anything than I am that Spieth will not come close to winning the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.  Grade: D-

Scottie is hanging on

Muirfield Village is so difficult today, and Scottie is kind of just hanging tough at the top of this board. He's even par through three holes of his back nine, and if he does that for the entirety of the back nine, that should be enough for win No. 5 on the year.

2024 Memorial Tournament Round 1 updates: Adam Hadwin holds onto Memorial lead after first round

champions tour 2023 kickoff tournament

The 2023 Memorial Tournament did not scare Adam Hadwin off from returning to Muirfield Village Golf Course.

After finishing the first round in 2023 3-under par, Hadwin missed the cut after finishing with four bogeys and two double-bogeys in the second round.

Follow Memorial Round 2 here: 2024 Memorial Tournament Round 2 updates: Adam Hadwin keeps lead into second round

Hadwin is a stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler , the No. 1 golfer in the world, at 5-under par. Xander Schauffele , Ludvig Aberg , Collin Morikawa and Corey Conners are two strokes behind Hadwin at 4-under.

“I feel pretty comfortable right now over the golf ball with kind of the entire game,” Hadwin said. “I never felt rushed. I never felt that as I kept making birdies, like I was getting ahead of myself or anything like that. Very comfortable. I feel in a lot better position to kind of handle any sort of adversity that may come or when it comes, because I feel like it will come around this place. There’s just too many holes where the margin for error is so small that you can feel like you hit a good shot and get absolutely screwed. I feel like mentally I’m in a really good place right now to be able to handle that and move forward and accept it. And so we’ll show up tomorrow and get ready and see what it holds.”

The second round of the Memorial Tournament tees off at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Here’s what happened in the first round Thursday:

When?: 16th June, 2024, Where?: Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen Kick-off time: 8pm BST.

England open their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia at Schalke’s Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen. Gareth Southgate’s side will want to get off to a good start but have a poor record when it comes to opening night at the European Championship. In 10 previous campaigns in this competition, England have won their first fixture just once – the 1-0 win over Croatia on home soil at Euro 2020.

Serbia have underachieved in recent tournaments but will offer a threat, with ex-Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic and Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic spearheading the side.

Denmark vs England

When?: 20th June, 2024, Where?: Frankfurt Arena, Frankfurt Kick-off time: 5pm BST.

England take on Denmark in Matchday Two of the tournament, a rematch of the Euro 2020 semi-final between the teams. Southgate’s side triumphed in that contest after extra-time, courtesy of Harry Kane’s winner.

The Scandinavians are awkward opposition, however, and have previously upset the odds in this competition. In 1992, Denmark were crowned European champions despite not initially qualifying for the tournament. Instated following Yugoslavia’s expulsion due to the outbreak of war in the country, the Danes went all the way.

England vs Slovenia

When?: 25th June, 2024, Where?: Cologne Stadium, Cologne Kick-off time: 5pm BST.

England’s final match-up of the Euro 2024 group stage will see the Three Lions take on Slovenia. England are unbeaten in their previous six fixtures with Slovenia, winning five, though will have to find a route past one of Europe’s best goalkeepers with Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak captaining the side.

Further forward, Benjamin Sesko will offer a real threat. The 21-year-old scored 14 goals in just 17 league starts for RB Leipzig in 2023-24 and recently snubbed interest from Arsenal and Chelsea to remain with the Bundesliga side.

Who could England face in the knockouts?

The complicated format of the 24-team tournament means England’s opponents for the next stage – provided qualification is assured – are unclear.

Should England win Group C, the Three Lions will take on the third-placed team from either Group D, E, or F, which could be Slovakia, Turkey, or Austria – among others.

The fixture would take place on 30th June 2024, at the Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen, with a kick-off time of 5 pm BST.

If England were to finish as runners-up in Group C, Southgate’s side would take on the winners of Group A, which contains Germany , Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland .

The fixture would take place on June 29th 2024, at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund , with a kick-off time of 8 pm BST.

Finally, England could qualify as one of the best-ranked third-place teams. If this were to happen, the Three Lions would meet the Group E winners (Belgium/Slovakia/Romania/Ukraine) on the 2nd July 2024, at the Allianz Arena in Munich, with kick-off scheduled for 5 pm BST.
