While tourists are not allowed to swim on the nearby beach , there are plenty of souvenir vendors selling miniature windmills and t-shirts with windmill prints at very reasonable prices.

Pagudpud is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Philippines , with Saud Beach being a particular standout.

I had the pleasure of witnessing my brother-in-law’s proposal to his long-time girlfriend on this very beach, making it an even more special memory.

Although the water clarity may be affected by the presence of seaweeds at times, there are plenty of exciting water activities to enjoy , such as banana boat rides, jet skiing, and snorkeling.

8. Patapat Viaduct Bridge

The Patapat Viaduct Bridge is a picturesque spot that has an amazing view of the mountains and the sea in one frame!

Be sure to try their Ilocos longganisa (garlicky pork sausage)! I bought this on our way home and had to buy a few for my relatives back home. 1 dozen of longganisa costs P100 only!

Other street food favorites include Ilocos Miki (handmade noodles in a hearty broth) and Ilocos chichacorn (deep-fried corn kernels seasoned with garlic and vinegar).

The best time to visit Ilocos Norte is during the dry season , which runs from November to April.

During these months, you can expect sunny skies, minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing .

If you’re planning to visit the tourist spots in Ilocos Norte during the peak season ( December to May ), be sure to book your accommodations and tours well in advance, as prices tend to be higher and availability may be limited.

For a more laid-back experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November or June to August .

Getting to Ilocos Norte

If you’re planning to drive to Ilocos Norte, be prepared for a long journey .

Our trip took almost 22 hours, with several stopovers along the way to allow our driver to rest and for us to stretch our legs.

While the extended travel time can be tiring, trust me when I say that the destination is well worth the effort!

To make your road trip more comfortable, I recommend taking regular breaks to stretch and move around.

This will help prevent back pain and stiffness, which I experienced for a few days after returning home.

Also, be sure to pack plenty of snacks , water , and entertainment to keep yourself occupied during the long drive.

Alternatively, you can fly to Laoag International Airport or take a bus and then hire a car or join a guided tour to explore the region.

What is the Best Way to Get Around Ilocos Norte?

The best way to get around Ilocos Norte depends on your personal preferences and travel style .

We used the family car for our Ilocos Norte trip, which allowed us to customize our itinerary and travel comfortably.

Officially known as the Saint Augustine Church , the church is known for its beautiful Spanish-era architecture. In 1993, Paoay Church was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once here, don’t forget to take photos of the PAOAY signage in front of the church. Marvel at the beauty of the church and stroll around the surrounding restaurants, food stalls, and souvenir shops. We particularly recommend dropping by Kusina Valentin for a bite of pinakbet pizza while enjoying the view of the Paoay Church.

Location: Paoay

The Bangui Wind Mills is a set of 20 colossal wind turbines standing along the coastline of Bangui Bay. A project aimed at generating hydro-electric power for electricity, it has since become one of the most popular Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Each wind turbine at Bangui stands at an impressive height of around 70 meters (230 feet), with massive blades spanning over 41 meters (135 feet) in diameter. Together, they form a captivating sight against the backdrop of the sea and clear skies.

When visiting here, don’t forget to check out the souvenir shop for miniature windmills that you can take home and check out other nearby activities, such as ATV rides.

The Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is one of the most popular tourist spots in Ilocos Norte. This geological wonder was carved by relentless forces of wind and sea along the coast of Burgos. Its name, “kapurpurawan” came from the Ilocano word “puraw” (or white), referring to the unique white limestone rocks found in the area.

To get here, you need to walk for about 3 kilometers from the main road or go on a horseback ride. Once you reach the rock formations, take a moment to enjoy the view of the limestone along the ocean and feel the fresh breeze. It’s a spot that’s as atypical as it is arresting.

Also located in the town of Paoay, the Malacañang of the North is a stately mansion that once served as the official residence of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos and his family. The state is now open as a museum, offering a glimpse into their opulent lifestyle.

Constructed in the 1970s, the mansion is characterized by its spacious layout, imposing façade, and meticulous attention to detail (check out the grand staircase, built according to a superstition in luck).

However, beyond its practical function as a transportation artery, the viaduct has become a popular tourist attraction in its own right.

The viaduct spans approximately 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles) and is supported by elegant arches, similar to those seen in Europe. Perfected on the edge of the coastal cliffs, it offers panoramic views of the ocean, with waves crashing against the rocky shores.

It’s common for tourists to take pictures on the side — and even middle — of the road. If you’re planning to do this, just be safe and watch out for incoming vehicles on either side!

Location: Pagudpud

The Sinking Bell Tower is a historical landmark in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. It was built during the Spanish Colonial Era and has earned its nickname due to rumors that the tower is sinking an inch per year. According to local stories, in the past, it was possible for a person mounted on a horse to pass through the gates, but today you’d have to crawl through to get inside.

But is it really sinking? Sadly, getting inside the tower is currently prohibited so it is not possible to try it for yourself. According to our guide in our Ilocos tour, the bell tower is not actually sinking — rather, roads were built higher.

Another interesting fact about this bell tower is that it is located several meters away from the St. William Cathedral which it was built for.

Regardless of what you believe about the Sinking Bell Tower, it is still one of the must-see Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

Location: Laoag City

There is something charming about lighthouses. Perhaps it’s their unique architecture or the fact that they are perched on high locations with the most amazing views!

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a Spanish Colonial-era lighthouse built atop a hill, overlooking the scenic coastline of Burgos, Ilocos Norte. It makes for a quick stopover during your Ilocos Norte itinerary and one that will leave you with great photos (and memories).

You can explore the base of the lighthouse, look at the items in the small museum, and of course appreciate the gorgeous view of the ocean from above. Don’t be shy in getting creative when it comes to picture taking; ask the guides at the lighthouse to show you the best spots!

To get here, you need to ride a tricycle to the parking area near the lighthouse. There are also souvenir shops and food stalls you can stop by along the way.

One of the two wind farms in the Ilocos Region, the Burgos Wind Farm is a 600-hectare project featuring 50 colossal wind turbines built along the rugged coastline in Burgos. The wind farm is so large that it covers three barangays and powers over 2 million households.

Similar to the Bangui Wind Farm, this place is also open to tourists who wish to see the windmills up close and take pictures of the structures against the backdrop of the ocean. Make sure to wear your best OOTD because this is one of the most scenic tourist spots in Ilocos Norte!

Saud Beach is a great place for swimming for families, along with other watersports activities. There are also plenty of beachside resorts and cottages that you can rent overnight or in a day, as well as restaurants and bars for local and seafood delicacies.

Despite its beauty, Saud Beach remains relatively less crowded compared to Blue Lagoon and other beach destinations in the Ilocos Region.

If you’re looking to explore beyond the beach, Saud Beach is nearby other attractions in Pagudpud, such as Bangui Wind Farm, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, and Blue Lagoon.

The Ilocos Region is home to some of the most beautiful Spanish-era churches, and one of those is located at the town of Bacarra.

Bacarra Church (also called  St. Andrew the Apostle Church ) was built in 1593, featuring Baroque architecture with a prominent red brick exterior. Beside is it the Domeless Bell Tower, which was damaged by several earthquakes in the past until one finally toppled off its roofing.

The Bacarra Church is a beautiful spot to visit especially for those who love architecture. There is also a museum beside it that houses various artifacts about the town’s history.

Location: Bacarra

Kabigan Falls is an 80-feet waterfall tucked away in the lush forests of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It is a secluded spot ideal for those who are looking for a short nature trip, with an ice-cold basin perfect for summer days.

Getting here is easy; in fact, it is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the area. You are required to secure a guide and then trek for 20-30 minutes across the jungle, depending on your pace. You can also go on a carabao ride and then trek for the rest of the way.

Make sure to bring snacks, water, and towels with you because there are no commercial structures in the waterfall area.

Pro Tip : Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Badoc Island is a privately owned island with a gorgeous white-sand beach, located 25 minutes away by boat from La Virgen Milagrosa Cove in Badoc, Ilocos Norte. This secluded spot is ideal for beach bumming, swimming, and of course taking lots of IG-worthy photos! Other activities include snorkeling, freediving, and hiking to see unique rock formations.

Since there are no commercial infrastructure in the island, only day tours are allowed.

As of 2022 , the island is listed for sale, with the local government hoping for it to be developed into a luxury resort. As of this writing, it is still part of the tourist spots of the Ilocos Norte tourism.

There is more to Ilocos Norte than its heritage structures, beaches, and windmills.

Opened to the public in 2022, Paoay Lake Water Park is one of the newest attractions in Ilocos Norte, featuring a hotel, a nice lakefront, and a sprawling water park with over 30 obstacle courses. Aside from the obstacle courses, there are also other activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, and volleyball.

For those who just want to chill, you can relax in one of the chic bean bags at the beachside while enjoying a summer drink of your choice.

You can visit here on a day pass or you can stay at the hotel overnight.

The easiest way to get to Ilocos is thru Laoag International Airport. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines flies from Manila to Laoag City.

Alternatively, you can also ride a bus from Manila to several destinations in Ilocos, including Laoag, Pagudpud, Vigan City, etc.

Ilocos Norte has a special place in my heart. I know, that’s quite a statement, but hear me out. This province has so much to offer giving you a lot of reasons to fall in love with it. It boasts many natural attractions , historical sites , and rich culture . And to top all of that, they have a lot of delicious food so there’s no going hungry when you visit this part of the country.

Personally, there are a few more reasons why Ilocos Norte is special for me. One, this is where we went to on my first ever out of town trip with friends. Along with that, it was my first airplane ride too! We decided to fly to Ilocos because none of us drives and we weren’t sure if we could manage the really long bus ride. Another reason is because I took my longest vacation in the province here. As a Manila girly, I’ve never really stayed in the province for more than just a few days. So when my friend invited me to go on a vacation with her family in their hometown a few years ago, I said yes right away. I enjoyed my time there so much that it kind of feels like a second home now.

So whenever there’s a chance to visit Ilocos, I always take it. Especially if that means I’d get to eat the very tasty Batac Empanada! Paoay, Laoag & Batac

Paoay church.

This UNESCO-listed attraction in Paoay is also known as San Agustin Church . It is also one of the most beautiful and ancient churches in the country. Before being declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it was first declared a National Cultural Treasure in 1973. According to the historical marker by the church entrance, the Augustinians laid the cornerstone of the church in 1704. The church is built using coral stones and bricks and it took 192 years before it opened to the public in 1896.

Its stunning facade has become a popular backdrop for tourist photos. It has a mix of Gothic and Baroque designs with some Oriental elements. Its exterior is also reminiscent of temples in Java. Aside from the facade, another distinct feature of the church are the huge buttresses on the sides and the back of the building. These buttresses were built to make the church withstand strong earthquakes that often happen in the province.

Next to the church, you will see a three-story bell tower . Separating it from the church was also a measure to protect it against earthquakes. Historically, the bell tower was used as a communication device to the townspeople. It also served as an observational post for Filipinos during the World War II.

Paoay Sand Dunes

If you didn’t know there’s a desert in the Philippines, it’s time to head to Paoay! Paoay Sand Dunes is one of the two most popular sand dunes in the province, next to La Paz in Laoag City. Sitting next to Suba Beach, the Paoay Sand Dunes span 88 square kilometers which makes for a great 4×4 off-road adventure .

Riding a 4×4 through the ups and downs of the sand dunes feels like a roller coaster, albeit an extra dusty one! This activity had me holding on to the metal bars of the truck for dear life, but it was worth every adrenaline-inducing minute.

Apart from being a tourist attraction, the Paoay desert has brought many a film to life. Among notable films shot here were Nora Aunor’s Himala and Mel Gibson’s Mad Max .

The best time to do this activity is in the morning when the sun isn’t as harsh yet or in the late afternoon so you can enjoy the colorful sunset. And don’t skip the sand boarding ! It may look scary especially if you see people doing it standing up, but you can definitely do it sitting down. Just try to keep your mouth closed or you might get a taste of the sand. Haha!

Malacañang of the North

This former Marcos residence turned museum is an attraction you can add to your itinerary. Overlooking Paoay Lake, the Malacañang of the North was built in 1977 by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority or TIEZA formerly known as the Philippine Tourism Authority. Featuring 19th-century Spanish colonial architecture, this two-story mansion features seven bedrooms.

Ilocanos refer to the mansion as Malacañang ti Amianan which is now a museum managed by the provincial government of Ilocos Norte. While most of the original structure remains, some of the rooms were converted into restrooms for visitors. What’s left for viewing are the four bedrooms, including three rooms that were once occupied by the Marcoses and the very spacious living room and dining room areas. The office of Ferdinand Marcos inside the mansion is also accessible to visitors including a gallery with photos during his administration. Guests can also wander around the Chinese garden located within the property.

Kusina Valentin

Located right across Paoay Church is a quirky little restaurant called Kusina Valentin . Its facade will remind you of Filipino ancestral homes, but its menu takes a modern twist. Formerly known as Herencia de Paoay, their signature pinakbet pizza is a must try, if only to satisfy your curiosity.

At first glance, it might seem like a regular vegetable pizza using pinakbet veggies. However, this pizza comes with a side of bagoong . I know it sounds a bit odd! Trust me, I was a bit skeptical to try it, too. But those who are curious enough to try are in for a treat. The bagoong gives this pinakbet pizza a unique burst of flavor.

Aside from their pinakbet pizza, they also have longganisa pizza , and bagnet pizza . If you can’t decide which Ilocano-themed pizza to try, you can also order their sampler. Kusina Valentin also serves Ilocano dishes like poqui poqui, dinengdeng, and insarabasab, along with their all-Filipino menu.

Nagbacalan Loom Weaving

Abel Iloco or Inabel is a local innovation that Ilocanos take pride in. This hand-woven textile with intricate patterns traditionally comes to life using a weaving loom. Today, a few towns in the region retain weaving communities that continue this legacy. One of these towns is Nagbacalan, Paoay .

A visit to the Nagbacalan Loom Weavers Multi-purpose Cooperative allows you to step into history to see how Inabel gets crafted. According to our tour guide, Manang Arlene, the whole weaving process used to start with preparing the cotton to make threads. However, because of the lack of availability of raw cotton, threads used to make Inabel today are now purchased.

You can watch every step of this process and even try weaving in Nagbacalan. Spoiler alert, it’s not easy! But you’ll surely have a different appreciation for this traditional weaving process that is an art in itself afterward.

La Paz Sand Dunes

Much like the Paoay Sand Dunes, the La Paz Sand Dunes have set the scene for different films. Among them, Fernando Poe Jr.’s Ang Panday features the sandy expanse!

And if you are looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity? Thrill-seekers can head here for an adventure-filled ride! This activity will have you riding on the back of a 4×4 truck as it drives through the bumpy sand dunes. When you reach a high portion of the dunes, you can go sand boarding . Using a board, you’ll go sliding down the sandy slope like it’s an outdoor slide. You can either do this sitting down or standing up if you’re brave enough.

If you’re interested in adding this to your itinerary, here are some tips for you. Make sure to hold on tight when you’re riding the 4×4, as the waves of the sand dunes is not for the faint-hearted. Wear comfortable clothing especially if you plan on going sand boarding. And if you go sliding down the sandy slope, keep in mind that you’ll have to climb back up too. This part is actually more tiring, to be honest. With that, remember to bring a bottle of water with you.

Sinking Bell Tower

The region has many historical structures that are more than a century old. One of them is the Sinking Bell Tower in Laoag. The bell tower is called such because it is said that the bell tower is slowly sinking over time. According to stories, back in the day, the tower entrance was high enough for a man-mounted horse. Today, one would probably have to crawl to be able to fit in. However, note that entering the bell tower is no longer allowed.

Although it is the sinking bell tower that mainly attracts the tourists, the church is worth a visit too Laoag Cathedral , formally called Saint William’s Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laoag. Established in 1580, wood and thatch made up the foundations of the first church. Meanwhile, the present structure, highlighting Italian Renaissance, came to be in 1612.

If you’re looking for a place to try Ilocano dishes in Laoag, consider La Preciosa . They serve Ilocano favorites along with other Filipino dishes. Among the dishes you can try are their crispy dinardaraan (an Ilocano version of dinuguan). Other Ilocano dishes you can order here are insarabasab, dinengdeng, sinanglao, warek-warek, higadu, and various bagnet dishes.

La Preciosa is also known for their cakes and pastries. We were told that this is where you can try the best carrot cake in the province. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to try it during our visit. If you dine at La Preciosa during your Ilocos trip, give it a taste and let us know if their carrot cake lives up to its reputation!

Batac Empanada

There are a lot of delicious Ilocano dishes, but you likely won’t be leaving Ilocos without a taste of empanada. Honestly, why would you even want to!?

In Ilocos Norte, a popular place to get them is the Batac Riverside Empanadaan . Here, there are numerous stalls selling empanadas. Even Glory’s Empanada , which was the catalyst of the local spin on the perfect afternoon snack, sits along this riverside.

Gloria Aduana Cocson or Glory has been making empanadas since she was 15 years old. Standing strong at 81 years old, Lola Glory thought of adding longganisa to the usual empanada that has vegetables and egg, eventually creating a unique product. Along with the empanada, Lola Glory has also become an icon in Ilocos Norte, taking home the Kalipi Award and Gameng Lifetime Achievement Award .

When you visit Batac, make sure to visit the riverside and try an empanada or two! It’s served with ketchup and vinegar, but different people have different preferences. So why not try both and see what you like best? And if you’re looking for a heavier meal, have your empanada with miki, a noodle soup dish that uses thick noodles, which is also available at the riverside.

St. Andrew the Apostle Parish & Bell Tower and Bacarra Museum

Also known as the Bacarra Church , St. Andrew the Apostle Parish is a Roman Catholic Church under the Diocese of Laoag. It has a domeless bell tower located a few meters away from the church which is its key feature. The church is a National Historical Landmark as declared by the National Historical Comission of the Philippines. It was also declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 1973.

The Augustinians established this church in 1591, which makes it one of the oldest parishes in Ilocos Norte. Today, a key feature of this church is its coral-brick bell tower, which collapsed after multiple earthquakes from 1931 to 1971. A portion of the bell tower was kept after its collapse and can still be seen today.

Adjacent to the church is the Museo de Bacarra . The two-story Spanish-colonial-era structure used to serve as the church convent. Repurposed as a museum, it now hosts religious and cultural artifacts, old photos, and documents.

Santa Monica Parish Church

The Santa Monica Parish Church is another noteworthy historical structure you’ll find in Ilocos Norte. Originally called San Miguel Church, this Roman Catholic parish church was constructed in 1779 in the municipality of Sarrat. Meanwhile the locals usually refer to it as Sarrat Church . It was declared as an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2009.

Built using red bricks, it is a striking structure with Neoclassical architecture and earthquake Baroque (a.k.a. seismic Baroque). Like most churches in the province, its bell tower is built a few meters away. Sarrat Church is also the biggest church in Ilocos Norte with the longest nave or isle.

Pagudpud, bangui, burgos & adams, kabigan falls.

Located in Barangay Baloi in Pagudpud, the 87-feet-high Kabigan Falls is a gorgeous natural wonder. It is about 1.8 kilometers from the national road so you’ll need to walk a bit to get here. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the falls, but no need to worry because it’s an easy trek. However, if you really prefer not to walk for whatever reason, you can also rent a vehicle to take you there.

The trek itself is already nice. With the trail lined up with trees, you don’t have to be under the sun so much. You’ll also get a picturesque view of the rice field and hills. But note that you’ll have to cross multiple streams to get to the falls so getting wet is unavoidable. Once you reach the falls, all that walking would be worth it when you see the beautiful cascade. You can also take a refreshing dip in the pool at the bottom of the falls.

There are many beautiful beaches in Ilocos Norte and one of them is Saud Beach in Pagudpud. This long and wide stretch of sand has been named as one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia by Travel & Leisure magazine. It may not have white sand, but it is laced with very fine sand that you can sink your feet into. Its crystal clear waters are so inviting that you’ll probably find yourself swimming before you know it.

The waves are mostly calm during the dry season, but you have to be mindful of the sudden drops in the water just a few meters from the shore. Saud Beach is also lined with multiple resorts so looking for a place to stay is not a problem. You can also just go on a day tour at one of the resorts if you don’t have plans of staying overnight.

Another great thing about Saud Beach is it is not crowded. Even during peak season, there’s not too many people on the beach. If you’re in need of a quiet and relaxing beach vacation, head to Pagudpud!

Blue Lagoon

This is another beach destination to include in your itinerary if you’re traveling further north to Pagudpud. Blue Lagoon , also known as Maira-ira Point is another stunning beach on the tip of Ilocos Norte. Its stretch is covered with white pebbly sand and its waters are also stunning. When it’s not surf season, the water here can be very still and reflect the blue sky. The name “Blue Lagoon” likely takes after this imagery.

Along the beach, you will find a number of resorts and restaurants. There are also many water sports to try. Despite being a bit commercialized, its natural beauty still remains for visitors to bask in. If you can’t decide which Pagudpud beach to visit, you can also go beach hopping!

Patapat Viaduct

Located in Pagudpud, the Patapat Viaduct connects the Maharlika Highway in Laoag to Cagayan Valley. Measuring 1.3km, it is the fifth longest bridge in the Philippines . This elevated, winding bridge hovers over 30 meters above sea level. Because of this, the bridge provides a scenic view of the sea and the coastal mountains.

Aside from the stunning views from the bridge, Patapat Viaduct is also an architectural marvel. Since its completion in 1986, it has solved the problem of landslides that used to cause vehicular accidents. You can make a stop at the viaduct if you’re making a trip to the beaches in Pagudpud.

Bangui Windmills

Bangui Windmills serve as both a tourist attraction and source of renewable energy in the region. These gigantic wind turbines stand along the shore of Bangui Bay making it a postcard-worthy attraction. Being one of the three wind farms in the province, Bangui Windmills take pride in being the first. It was developed by Northwind Power Development Corp with its Phase I being inaugurated in 2005. Today, the wind farm is mostly owned by the Ayala Corporation through AC Energy, but it is still operated by Northwind.

The area is also an ideal spot to watch the sunset so it would be best to time your visit to the sundown. Just make sure to hold on to any loose items because it can get really windy here!

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

This stunning rock formation in Burgos is one of the most recognizable attractions in the region. Named after the Ilocano word puraw , which means white, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation got its name from its white limestone formations. These formations took eons of constant pummeling of waves into the shore to be formed. It’s located very close to the Burgos EDC Wind Farm and Bangui Windmills, so aside from the picturesque formations, you can also see a few windmills from here.

From the jump-off point, there’s a 10-minute walk to reach the rock formations. Alternatively, you can ride a horse for P100 for a roundtrip ride. The trail involves going down a flight of stairs, but the rest of the way is flat. However, there are portions of the trail with small rocks so it’s still best to wear comfortable footwear. And if you visit around early afternoon, expect the scorching heat of the sun. You will find refreshments being sold at the jump-off point so you can grab a cold drink there if you don’t have a bottle of water with you.

EDC Burgos Wind Farm

Yes, there’s more than one wind farm in Ilocos Norte and one of them is in Burgos.

The EDC Burgos Wind Farm is the second wind farm built in the province and the largest one in the Philippines. Owned and operated by Energy Development Corporation or EDC, the project occupies a 600-hectare site with a total of 50 wind turbines. It covers barangays Saoit, Poblacion, and Nagsurot.

Located on higher ground, a portion of the wind farm is a cliff that serves as a viewpoint of the wind turbines. Paired with this is a stunning view of the ocean. And if you look a bit further, you can get a glimpse of the first wind farm in Ilocos Norte, Bangui Wind Mills, as well as the Pagudpud Wind Farm from a distance.

If you can, visit Burgos Wind Farm during the late afternoon so you can watch the breathtaking sunset over the spinning turbines. It’s also a great spot to take photos. Just be careful not to get too close to the cliff edge for your safety!

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

This historical attraction is a Spanish colonial epoch relic. Cape Bojeador Lighthouse , also referred to as Burgos Lighthouse stands in the town of Burgos. Perched on top of Vigia de Nagpartian hill, it stands at 160 meters above sea level and marks the northwesternmost point of Luzon.

Despite its age, the original structure remains and the lighthouse still beams a light for those sailing through the area. Although its light now comes from an electric lamp, you can see the original apparatus displayed in the main pavilion. This room and three other rooms used to be offices and living quarters. Now, they serve as galleries where you can see Cape Bojeador’s history.

Anuplig Falls

There are multiple waterfalls scattered all over Ilocos Norte and one of them is Anuplig Falls in Adams. Located in the northern part of the province, Adams is a small municipality composed of only one barangay and a population of just over two thousand people. But don’t underestimate this small but mighty collection of natural attractions.

Anuplig Falls is one of the attractions that the town takes pride in. Getting there entails trekking for 45 minutes to an hour . The trail is generally easy with a few steep spots, but it’s nothing a beginner wouldn’t be able to handle, even if you’re not the most active person in the room. However, the path is just big enough for one person to walk on and it’s very close to the edge so you have to be careful.

After about an hour of trekking, you’ll be greeted by the wonderful view of the waterfall and the rushing sound of the cascade. When we visited, no one in our group planned to take a dip, but the cold water was so inviting we couldn’t resist it! After all, we did brave the trek to get there! It would be a shame not to experience a refreshing dip in the water.

If you plan to visit, having a nature guide is a must. You can get a guide at the tourist center located across the municipal hall. This is mandatory upon entering Adams. The guide fee is around P150-200 and one guide is good for a group of up to 5 persons. Aside from Anuplig Falls, your guide can also take you to other attractions in Adams, so it’s best to start early in the morning. It is also best to wear comfortable footwear with ample grip to make your trek easier.

Cardom’s Winery

It’s not just good food that you can find in Ilocos Norte, they have drinks you can pair with it too. You can find local wines in many shops around the province, but if you want to try it straight from the source, go to Adams. There are multiple wineries you can visit here, but one of the most popular ones is Cardom’s Winery .

Their place is very unassuming. From the outside, it’s just a bare house with nothing but an old tarpaulin as a signage. To be honest, it felt a little bit odd entering here because the place is also very dim. But it’s not really the aesthetics you’re going here for, it’s their wines. Their signature is the bugnay wine , but they have over a dozen more flavors to choose from. You can taste each flavor if you wish because Cardom’s offer unlimited wine tasting.

We tried a few of their flavors during our visit. First, we tried the bugnay , then the tapuey (rice wine) which our tour guide recommended for us to try. Then, we picked various flavors that piqued our curiosity. We had a taste of the lemon, calamansi, roselle, and sampaloc among others. Out of all the ones we tried, our group had a consensus that the roselle is the best of them.

Of course, you can take home bottles of wine after trying them. They sell it in various sizes and even have an option between cork sealed and cap sealed for their biggest size. It makes for a great pasalubong for your family or even yourself! Their wines range from P50-P350.

Inuwayan Farms

Inuwayan Farms will give you a farm-to-table experience here in Ilocos Norte. They grow, make, and serve many of the items they offer here. When you enter, you’ll first pass through their shop where you can see all their products like cacao wine , chocolate , and more. And once you exit the shop, you’ll see a garden surrounded by multiple cacao and bugnay trees leading to the restaurant. Here, you can dine right under a cacao tree.

We stopped by Inuwayan Farms for our breakfast and taste their locally made chocolate products. We were served with bread and their chocopeanut spead which was paired with their version of an instant hot chocolate . It’s similar to tablea, but unlike the traditional ones, you only have to stir this in hot water or milk. Little did we know, this was just our appetizer and we were served with rice, kardis (pigeon peas) soup, and vegetables.

Apart from the farm-to-table experience, another notable thing about Inuwayan is how they help the locals in their community. The owner, Dra. Bielmaju Waley helps IP farmers who grow cacao. Inuwayan also helps provide jobs to the locals with their small chocolate factory.

Southern ilocos norte, la virgen milagrosa de badoc.

The Shrine of La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc , also known as Saint John the Baptist Basilica or simply Badoc Basilica sits in the town of Badoc. It houses the statue of the Virgen Milagrosa of Virgin Mary and is dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Locals will tell you that the Virgen Milargrosa washed up on shore along with the statue of Christ of the Black Nazarene . Fishermen supposedly found both statutes, encased in wooden boxes, on the border of Sinai and Badoc. Stories claim that people from Badoc tried to pick up the Black Nazarene Sinai locals tried getting the Virgen Milagrosa. However, both religious images were too heavy for them to lift no matter how hard they tried. Eventually, they decided to switch and the people were able to pick the statues up without breaking a sweat. The belief that both the Virgen Milagrosa and the Black Nazarene chose their own homes stems from this story.

Museo nina Juan at Antonio Luna

Badoc is a relatively quiet town. It doesn’t attract as many tourists as other towns in Ilocos Norte, but it has its fair share of history. One of the greatest points of pride for Badoc is the artist Juan Luna Juan Luna . For those who may not be familar with Luna, his proverbial resume spans quite a few roles, as he was a painter, sculptor, and a political activist in the Philippine Revolution during the 19th century.

Housed in what used to be the Luna home in Badoc, the Museum of Juan and Antonio Luna is just a few meters away from Badoc Basilica. Displayed here are reproductions of Juan Luna’s paintings and belongings of his brother, General Antonio Luna . Additionally, antique furniture on the second floor of the museum give visitors a glimpse of what the house looked like in the past, including the bedroom, chapel, and azotea. Even the house itself is a historical artifact: despite being restored, portion of its walls were preserved from the original structure.

Pinili Inabel Center

Art and culture enthusiasts will surely love a visit to Pinili Inabel Center . It was built in honor of Magdalena Gamayo who is a National Living Treasure awardee. The center was inaugurated in August 2023 in time for Nana Magdalena’s 99th birthday. It was put up with the goal to inspire the younger generation to continue the art and tradition of weaving inabel and serve as a tourist attraction as well. The weaving center also gave job opportunities to women in Pinili and its nearby towns.

Located in Barangay Lumbaan, the center stands on a portion of land that Nana Magdalena donated to the government for this project. When you visit, you can see how they weave these Inabel fabrics with different designs. On another area is a gallery where you can see the different Inabel designs they weave here. We were lucky to see Nana Magdalena herself when we visited, doing what she does best — weave inabel! At almost 100 years old , she continues to weave these fabrics that are a huge part of the Ilocano culture. You can also purchase Inabel here with prices ranging from P400-600 per yard.

10 Things To Do In Ilocos Norte, Philippines [With Sample 3 Day Itinerary]

If you have read my Ilocos Sur Itinerary , then don’t forget to pair it with a trip to the north. Here’s our travel guide with things to do Ilocos Norte , Philippines. With the many fascinating spots like Pagudpud, Paoay, and Bangui, you’ll be filled with awe in this beautiful province.

Last 2019, my parents and I booked a flight from Cebu to Clark for our travel to Region 1. From Dau Terminal, we got on a bus to Vigan then we were off to Laoag. Read awesome things you could do, how to go there as well as a sample itinerary if you want to travel here, too!

Things to Do In Ilocos Norte

1. be amazed by the windmills.

One of the most iconic things you should not miss in Ilocos Norte is the Bangui Wind Farm. You will be amazed at how enormous these wind turbines are. About 20 units are stretching along the beach of Bangui Bay. However, as you travel along Ilocos Norte, you could see much more. The state of the art turbines can carry about 1650 KW of electricity!

2. Sand Board!

One of my favorite experiences in Paoay is sandboarding in Paoay Sand Dunes. This is also a place where movies like “Himala” and the “Bagani” series was filmed. Ride a 4×4 ATV and brave the high and fun dunes. Get ready to fall and get dirty! I did on the more elevated spot for Sand Boarding!

3. Check out the Churches!

There are many historical churches in Ilocos Norte. One is the Paoay Church that is known as the “Earthquake Baroque Church in the Philippines” and built in the 1700s. Another one is the Bacarra church that has a domeless bell tower built in the 1700s, too!

4. Walk to see the Rock Formation

On the coast of Burgos in front of Bangui Bay is the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. The structures are purely nature-made and beautiful. I walked this under the scorching heat of the sun; most prefer to ride horses. It’s a bit of a long journey from the top to the rocks, so prepare water or buy ice candy as you go back.

5. Dip in the waters!

Go to the Blue Lagoon of Pagudpud or the “Boracay of the North,” and take a dip. There are many resorts nearby, so you’ll surely a night here. It doesn’t have as many tourists as other destinations so that you could enjoy the beach for yourself. Try the zip line down, too!

6. Visit the Malacañang of the North

Ilocos Norte was the home province of former President Ferdinand Marcos. So, he had built an official residence for his family in Paoay. This two-story mansion has gorgeous views you would enjoy. Now, this became a museum. You can see their rooms as well as his office and know a slight history.

7. Climb to the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Want a fantastic view of Ilocos Norte? Well, go to Burgos and see the view of the province through the lighthouse. This was made during the Spanish occupation and lit in 1892. I suggest riding a tricycle to the top as you need to climb stairs to the lighthouse still. You’ll need to save energy for your adventures!

8. Witness how people make Salt

In Pasuquin, you will witness how people make Salt from water. The process is called Asgana, and you’ll see them boiling saline water. It’s exciting and will make you curious. It’s also lovely if you tip the workers so they could have some snacks!

9. Take a picture at Patapat Bridge

Do you want to go to Region 2? Well, go through the Patapat Viaduct in Ilocos Norte, and you’ll be in Region 2 in no time. This bridge is the fifth-longest in the country. It’s not only long, but the views are also gorgeous! Cross with caution!

10. Food-trip!

Don’t miss authentic local cuisines when you travel to another place. Try their Pinakbet, Empanada, and Bagnet. But also some Dragon Fruit as there’s a farm in Ilocos Norte. You’ll love it here, especially if you’re a foodie!

Here’s our Ilocos Norte Itinerary, you can enjoy it on a day and a half or two.

Day 1 in Ilocos Norte

Travel from Vigan to Laoag

We got on a bus from Vigan to Laoag, and travel time was about 2 hours. Since it was super-hot in the afternoon, we traveled at about 3 or 4 PM.

How to Go to Ilocos Norte

From Manila by Bus

You can ride a bus from Manila. Popular buses are Partas Bus in Cubao, Florida Bus in Sampaloc, and Fariñas bus. There are a few trips in the morning as early as 6:00 AM, but most are at night. It will cost at least 700.

Travel time is about 10 to 12 hours, especially if it’s traffic. P.S. If you are flying to Clark, you can wait for buses in Dau Bus Terminal.

From Manila by Car

Should you have a private car, you’ll most likely pass by the North Luzon Expressway and MacArthur Highway. You can use google maps. However, it’s better to drive midnight as there is less traffic. It’s going to be along the trip, so better have an extra driver or at least stop at some cities.

There are direct flights from NAIA to Laoag, Ilocos Norte. Travel time is 1 hour and 10 minutes. It’s expensive, but it will save you a lot of time. It’s preferred if you are not good with long-distance travel.

Where to Stay in Ilocos Norte

Hannah’s Beach Resort

If you want to stay near the Blue Lagoon, Hannah’s Beach Resort offers the best view. There are a pool and some characters by the beach which you will enjoy taking pictures with.

Fort Ilocandia Resort Hotel

Located in the city center in Laoag and also near the beach in Fort Ilocandia. The hotel is so big; you’ll think you’re staying in your private mansion. There are also facilities like Swimming Pool, Bars, Gym, and more.

Hotel Asuncion

Located in the City Proper, hotel Asuncion is excellent for those on a budget. It’s near a hospital, supermarket, restaurants, and tourist attractions. The rooms are spacious, and they serve free breakfast!

Where to Eat in Ilocos Norte

Cuisine De Iloco

One of the best restaurants in Laoag is Cuisine De Iloco. Taste authentic Ilocano and Filipino food in this restaurant! Try Ilocano Express, Poque-Poque, and Bagnet. There are also delicacies for sale in this place.

Saramsan Ylocano Restaurant and Bar

This house turned restaurant also serves authentic Ilocano Dishes. “Saramsan” means informal dining in Ilocano, surely you’ll feel at home and go home full after a tasty lunch or dinner here! The diners are always satisfied with their orders!

La Preciosa

If you want Ilocano cuisine and delicious deserts, La Preciosa is where to go. Their carrot cake is a must-eat when you visit here. The ambiance of the restaurant is impressive, too! You’ll love the coziness here.

Top 10 Ilocos Norte Attractions to Add in Your Itinerary

Located in the northern part of the Philippines, Ilocos Norte is a beautiful province that brings visitors on an out-of-this-world journey. In fact, when we explored the province, we felt like we were constantly teleporting from one era to another. From the enigmatic natural wonders to awe-inspiring historical attractions, here are the top Ilocos Norte attractions to add in your itinerary.

But before your trip, it would be great to pick up some Ilocano words and phrases so you can interact better with the locals. Agannad ka! (Take care!)

Top Ilocos Norte attractions and tourist places

1. pagudpud.

Pagudpud is a coastal town on the northernmost tip of Ilocos Norte. It is often hailed as the “Boracay of the North” with its long stretch of white sand on Saud Beach like that of Boracay but a smaller, quieter version. Beyond the beach, you can also trek Kabigan Falls and Bantay Abot Cave for added adventure.

We had so much fun swimming and road-tripping in Pagudpud. What amused us even more was the fact that we could hear a different language broadcast over the radio. It felt like we were no longer in the Philippines. Then, we realized we were already very close to Taiwan . Which brings us, Taiwan is still visa-free for Filipinos until July 2024.

2. Patapat Viaduct

While you are in Pagudpud, be sure to pass by the Patapat Viaduct , also called Patapat Bridge . Spanning 1.3km with an elevation of 30 meters above sea level, it connects the regions of Ilocos and Cagayan Valley.

If you didn’t know already, a viaduct is a special kind of bridge with arches or columns like the ones you usually see in Europe. The Patapat Viaduct is so scenic and distinct that it’s considered one of the most photographed tourist places in Ilocos Norte.

3. Bangui Windmills

No trip to Ilocos Norte is complete without visiting the Bangui Windmills along the 9km stretch of Bangui Bay. Aside from providing wind energy, Bangui Windmills is a popular tourist attraction in Ilocos Norte because of its postcard-worthy views.

Of course, we didn’t miss the chance to do some photo ops here with the Bagui Windmills as our breathtaking backdrop.

4. Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

From Pagudpud and Bangui, go south and proceed to Burgos, another charming municipality in Ilocos Norte where you can find the famous Kapurpurawan Rock Formation . This white limestone rock formation is so unique and enigmatic that it has become one of the top natural attractions in Ilocos Norte.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Burgos was named after José Burgos of GOMBURZA since he is from Ilocos? The three Filipino Catholic priests Mariano Gómes, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, were accused of treason and were executed by the Spanish authorities in 1872.

5. laoag cathedral.

One of the best heritage sites you should visit in Ilocos Norte is the Laoag Cathedral or the Saint William’s Cathedral . Aside from being the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laoag, this majestic church is famed for its Italian Renaissance design.

Stepping foot here made us feel like we were transported to Europe — it was so surreal!

6. Sinking Bell Tower

Within the vicinity of the Laoag Cathedral is the Sinking Bell Tower . As you might have probably guessed, it’s called a sinking bell tower because it actually sinks gradually. Why so? You might be as curious as us. The tower is said to be built on a sandy foundation, which is why it’s sinking every year for about an inch.

At 45 meters high, it is the tallest belfry in the Philippines that withstood the test of time. In fact, it survived a typhoon, earthquake, and fire. We can only wish that preservation efforts will continue so the next generations will still see this architectural wonder.

7. Museo Ilocos Norte

While you’re still in the capital city of Laoag, do drop by the Museo Ilocos Norte . Housed in a tobacco warehouse, this quaint museum displays important relics and artefacts of the local tribes.

If you want to dig deeper into the culture, heritage, and ethnography of the people of Ilocos, this is where you should go.

Paoay Sand Dunes is one of the top Philippine tourist spots for adrenaline junkies. Here, you can ride a 4×4 vehicle through the expansive desert and go sandboarding for the ultimate fun in the sand.

Fun Fact: Did you know that the Paoay Sand Dunes was the filming location of numerous classic Filipino and international films including Panday (1980), Himala (1982), Mad Max (1979), and Born on the Fourth of July (1989)?

When we set foot here, we really felt like we were in a vast desert in the middle of nowhere that’s not in the Philippines. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction in Ilocos Norte you shouldn’t miss.

9. Paoay Church

While you’re in Paoay, do visit Paoay Church or Saint Augustine Church . This Roman Catholic church was declared a National Culture Treasure in 1973, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 as one of the “ Baroque Churches of the Philippines ”.

When we came here, it was as though we were transported back in time. The church and surrounding area had a certain sacredness and old-world charm that made us stand in awe.

10. Malacañang of the North

As the tourism industry adjusts to the new normal, more local destinations are opening to travelers who are hungry to explore what the Philippines has to offer. One of which is Ilocos Norte – a province up north where you’ll find hidden gems worth discovering. A trip to the northernmost tip of Luzon is something you wouldn’t normally go for but if you’re looking for a unique adventure, the eight hours spent on the road will be worth it as you’ll be greeted by these breathtaking scenes:

Solsona-Apayao Road

You don’t have to spend hours hiking when you pay a visit to Solsona-Apayao Road located 40 kilometers from Laoag City. Over the recent years, the highway linking two provinces has been gaining popularity for its breathtaking sight of the Cordilleras where you’ll find rich flora and fauna, a view deck, and a camping site. Visitors are also reminded of views similar to old Baguio as tall pine trees surround the camping site. In the early mornings, you’ll be greeted by a sea of clouds, making the experience feel magical.

When visiting, you have to pay an environmental fee of P20.00 per head.

Paoay Lake Water Park

Boasting 478 hectares, Paoay Lake is a scenic body of water located in the Malacañang of the North. It is also now the home of the newly-opened Paoay Lake Water Park, the same floating playground known as Inflatable Island in Subic. The 4,200-square-meter playground has various obstacles that will test your endurance and strength. The village is the home of ancestral homes you can rent for a night starting at P5,000. Fun fact, it’s owned by Dr. Joven Cuanang, the same man behind the popular Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo, Rizal.

Paoay Sand Dunes

Perfect for thrill-seekers, Paoay Sand Dunes offers an action-filled 4×4 filled ride around the 1,479-hectare desert in Laoag City. Aside from the scream-inducing ride and sandboarding experience, visitors can now drive to two new art installations for picture-taking: Stacked Stones and Mirage, which features structures made of aluminum. During the 4×4 ride, you’ll also pass by two iconic statues from classic Pinoy movies: a statue of praying Elsa from Nora Aunor’s film Himala (1982) and a statue of FPJ whose Ang Panday films were shot in the same desert.

A 4×4 ride with sandboarding costs P2,500 at Paoay Sand Dunes. The best time to go on a ride would be early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Paoay Church

No trip to Ilocos Norte is complete without admiring and uttering a silent prayer at Paoay Church. Also known as The Saint Augustine Church, Paoay Church features Baroque architecture. After the exercise, cool off in its refreshing waters with a breathtaking 112-feet waterfall view. According to the tour guides, its waters can go as deep as 8 feet. Entrance to the waterfalls only costs P10.00 per head while the tour guide fee is P100 per 5 pax.

Patapat Viaduct

If you love scenic car rides, Patapat Viaduct in Pagudpud will make you swoon. Nestled at the foot of the cliff of North Cordillera Mountain Rangers, the 1.20-kilometer winding viaduct connects two barangays: Balaoi and Pancian. It’s also known as the French Riviera of the North, and tourists often stop to witness the rocky shores and get a glimpse of humpback whales in Pasaleng Bay.

Burgos Windfarm

Owned by Energy Development Corporation, Burgos Windfarm is the second wind farm that can be found in Ilocos Norte and is the center of renewable energy in SEA. There are 50 vestas in the 600-hectare property and the view of the sea and distant windmills is just breathtaking. Prepared to be blown away – literally!

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is arguably one of the most scenic landscapes you’ll find in the town of Burgos. Its massive rock formations jut out into the sea, and if you don’t want to go on foot in between visiting locations, you can hire a horseback ride for a fee. It would make you feel like you’re filming a scenic commercial! The entrance to the park is only P30 for adults and P20 for kids.

Here are 10 places to visit in Ilocos Norte for free or under P100 for a budget-friendly but productive trip to the province.

1. Sarrat Church – largest church in Ilocos Norte

Sarrat Church , or Santa Monica Church, is the largest church in Ilocos Norte by length. If you’re into architectural designs, you’ll fall in love with this particular structure. It was built in 1779 with red bricks in neoclassical architecture and Earthquake Baroque – a style found in restored, old, Filipino buildings after the ravaging earthquakes that occurred in the 17th and 18th centuries . 

Unlike more popular tourist spots in the area, Sarrat Church is peaceful. Beyond the church, there are also ruins by the convent you can explore. Surrounded by trees, it makes a great place for a relaxing walk within historic walls.

In 2009, Sarrat Church was declared as an Important Cultural Property by the National Museum of the Philippines.

2. Cape Bojeador Lighthouse – functioning lighthouse built during Spanish times

The Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is a massive 66ft tall tower that overlooks Cape Bojeador. It was first lit on 30th March 1892 while the Philippines was still under Spanish rule. In fact, it was used to signal and assist galleons that used to sail by.

Today, at over a hundred years old, the still-functioning lighthouse serves as one of Ilocos Norte’s most popular tourist attractions. 

Tourists are no longer allowed to climb the lighthouse itself but you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of the cape, as well as the West Philippine Sea atop the hill where the lighthouse sits. 

The building by the lighthouse also houses a museum that showcases the place’s old lighthouse equipment, including a modest lightkeeper’s quarters.

3. Patapat Viaduct – scenic bridge built around a mountain

It’s quite literally impossible to pass by Ilocos Norte and not get a glimpse of the Patapat Viaduct . This bridge, constructed 31 meters above sea level, wraps around a mountain and gives passersby an unobstructed view of the sea. 

At 1.3km long, the Patapat Bridge is the fifth-longest bridge in the Philippines. It’s not usually busy but you should still look out for passing vehicles. Otherwise, it’s a perfect spot for photos.

4. Bangui Windmills – towering windmills lined on the beach

If you’ve ever looked at photos of people hanging out in Pagudpud, you’ve probably seen these giant structures poking out in the background. 

The Bangui Windmills is one of Ilocos Norte’s most popular attractions where you can feel as if you’re overseas – somewhere like Switzerland – but still enjoy the tropical breeze.

The windmills naturally stick out because they’re 230ft high. But these aren’t just for aesthetics. They actually generate a great amount of wind energy that Filipinos get to consume.

5. Paoay Church – iconic Spanish-era church that Ilocos Norte is known for

Saint Augustine Church, better known as Paoay Church , is probably on everyone’s list of places to go to in the north, and for good reason. This beautiful Baroque structure took two decades to construct and was completed in 1710. It’s famous for the huge buttresses on the sides and back of the church. 

Paoay Church is also another example of Earthquake Baroque architecture. It was declared as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

Fans of Thai actor Mario Maurer might also remember this church as one of the shooting locations of Suddenly, It’s Magic , a movie he starred in alongside Filipina actress Erich Gonzales.

In front of the church is the Herencia Cafe that serves elevated local cuisine. Their pinakbet (vegetable stew) pizza that comes with a bagoong sauce is definitely a must-try.

6. Sinking Bell Tower – Spanish era bell tower that’s sinking one inch a year

Built by Augustinian missionaries in the early 18th century, Laoag’s Sinking Bell Tower was said to be originally 150ft tall. Local legend claims that people were once able to ride on horseback into the tower through its gates but now, people would have to scoot down to enter it. 

The structure has mysterious origins which draws in curious travelers. One of the weirdest things about it is that it was built 80 meters from the church it was supposed to be attached to. 

Tourists are now barred from entering the sinking tower for safety, but you’re free to take pictures outside it. 

However, the Sinking Bell Tower is also next to Aurora Park which wasn’t built in the Spanish colonial period but gives off European vibes with a water fountain with sculptures.

7. Malacañang of the North – former president’s vacation home that’s now a museum

The Malacañang of the North is a grand mansion that was a gift from former first lady Imelda Marcos to her husband, the late former president Ferdinand Marcos. It is named after the official residence and workplace of the president of the Philippines in Manila called the Malacañang Palace. 

It was one of the properties owned by the Marcoses that were seized by the Philippine government when Marcos was removed from power. 

This beautiful mansion has a sprawling garden and a view of Paoay Lake. The house itself has a mix of Spanish and Ilocano architecture.

Now that it’s a museum, you will get a glimpse of how the Marcos family lived during the former president’s 20-year dictatorship at Malacañang of the North.

8. Juan Luna Shrine – former home of historical figures Juan and Antonio Luna

Filipinos usually associate Juan Luna with the Spoliarium , his iconic painting that’s on display at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila . However, many people tend to forget that he was also a revolutionary who fought against the Spanish during their occupation of the Philippines, which is what the Juan Luna Shrine commemorates.

The house itself used to be the Luna family’s ancestral home so you’ll be able to see authentic furniture and personal belongings used by Luna and his family. Besides the Spoliarium , you’ll also see more works from the artist, such as The Parisian Life which is said to depict the male gaze.

The shrine also has items from his younger brother, General Antonio Luna , who was a key character during the revolution as well as the Filipino-American War.

The house is made up of brick interiors and exteriors, making it an imposing structure in their town.

9. Bacarra Domeless Tower – ruins of a bell tower near two other tourist spots you can visit

The Bacarra Domeless Tower originally stood at 160ft tall. However, due to strong earthquakes, the tower lost its dome and has become tilted but you can still see the debris at its foot.

Behind the bell tower is an old, two-story convent that houses Museo de Bacarra where you’ll see religious artifacts from the Spanish colonial times. There’s also a garden with an underground tunnel that’s said to connect the tower, the church, and the Bacarra River.

The Bacarra Domeless Tower was declared as a National Historical Landmark and a National Cultural Treasure by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the National Museum of the Philippines respectively.

10. Taoid Museum – showcases artifacts from ethnic groups in Cordillera

The Taoid Museum features work highlighting the Cordillera ethnic groups’ cultures. Taoid is a word that means “inheritance” in Iloko, so here you can expect to see artifacts from different Cordilleran indigenous groups, their way of life, their traditions, and art preserved for younger and future generations.

Aside from the traditional, the museum also features contemporary art, still taking inspiration from Cordilleran life and culture. Visitors are even allowed to touch some artifacts, making the experience interactive.

It’s like riding a rollercoaster. There are pretty steep slopes and flat ones. It makes you wonder how did a place like this come to be?

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Built in 1887, the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse has been guiding ships from 1892 up to the present. Yes, the thing is still working! However, going up the lighthouse is prohibited. Once you get here, don’t be surprised if the staffs are friendly. They’ll even take photos of you. They know the best poses.

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations

Kapurpurawan Rock Formations is what it is –  white rock formations. It’s located in Burgos, Ilocos Norte and has been sculpted the weather and oceanic forces. The term ‘puraw’ is a local term for white. Because of the many vandals, it is prohibited to go near the rock formations.

Bangui Windmills

One of the most visited Ilocos Norte tourist spots is the Bangui Windmills. Here you will see 20 units of windmills along a 9 km shoreline. Yes. It’s located on a beach. Currently, it is recognized as the largest wind farm in Southeast Asia.

Bantay Abot Cave

Located in Baloi, Ilocos Norte, the Bantay Abot Cave is one of the unique rock formations in the region. This is a small rocky hill that was wrecked by an earthquake which led to the gaping hole. When you look at it from afar, the whole hill looks like a whale.

Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is named as such because of its crystal blue tint. Also known as Maira-ira Point, Blue Lagoon is packed during summer. Its sand is almost white and is considered as one of the most beautiful beaches up north. And if you’re up for some adventure, Hannah’s zipline is known to be the longest over the water zipline in the world. It’s around 1.2 kilometers long!

The Patapat Viaduct is the 4th longest bridge in the country with a length of 1.3 km. Elevated at 31 meters, this bridge was completed in 1986 and is one of the most majestic structures in Ilocos Norte. If you’re going to Cagayan from Laoag and vice versa, you’ll be passing here.

Paoay Church

As a historical church, the Saint Augustine Church also known as Paoay church was founded by Augustinian missionaries in 1593 and has become one of the best Ilocos Norte tourist spots. Over the centuries, it was damaged during the 1706 and 1927 earthquake. The Katipuneros used the tower as an observation post during the Revolution while the Guerrillas used it during the Japanese Occupation.

If you love empanada, the best place to eat would be its origin. The delicious empanada came from Batac. And to celebrate this, the place holds an annual Batac festival on the 23rd of June. Most of the empanadas here are sold at less than P100. There are several varieties that you can try. There’s the original and a lot of other doubles. Double egg, double longanisa, and so on.

Ilocos Norte, Philippines is a beautiful province found in the Ilocos Region. It is attracting many tourists both local and abroad. The place offers various tourist destinations highlighting nature and historical sites.

” Ilocos Norte: Your Ultimate Travel” aimed to provide information that a first-time traveler may need when visiting the province. I have linked my personal experiences in various places I visited in this province to give you first-hand information.

 The Burgos Lighthouse.  Popularly known as  Cape Bojeador Lighthouse,  is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, After more than 100 years since it was constructed, the lighthouse became a popular tourist destination in Ilocos Norte, yet, it still functions as a welcoming beacon to the international ships that enter the Philippine Archipelago. Free Shuttle from the Laoag International Airport to your hotel. I was impressed the first time I visited Ilocos when I knew that the shuttle was free for the tourists. HOW TO GET TO ILOCOS NORTE, PHILIPPINES ( TO SEE ITS TOURIST SPOTS )

Ilocos Norte, Philippines has an International Airport accepting tourists from various ports of origin:  45 minutes from Manila (daily), Philippines; 55 minutes from Kaohsiung, Taiwan ( Chartered flights); 80 Minutes from Guangzhou, Hongkong & Taipei; 2.15 hours from  Shanghai.

By land, various bus lines serve the Manila-Laoag route for an 8-hour drive. Ilocos Norte is just 477 kilometers north of Manila. It can also be reached 4 hours from Baguio City.

• Partas Bus Lines (best-in-class): Cubao-Laoag; Pasay-Laoag; Sampaloc-Laoag; Baguio-Laoag

GETTING AROUND ILOCOS NORTE, PHILIPPINES

Getting around Ilocos Norte can be made in various ways. Of course, the most comfortable and the one that I also used on my last visit to the province was the rent-a-car. However, for those who would want a various mode of transportation or for backpackers  who are traveling alone or with just one companion, the following might be of great help:

• PRIVATE CARS & VANS. You can book a van or a private car through your hotel. The average price is P3,500.00 for the whole day, inclusive of a private chauffeur.
• BUS. Prices vary, although bus owners usually collect a fee between  P25.00-P60.00 per passenger for an ordinary bus depending on the destination and a minimum of P50.00 for air-conditioned buses.
• Colorful utility vehicles that ply the standard routes. The average fee is P11.00 per kilometer.
• TRICYCLE. The most common and the easiest way to get around town, especially if short distances are involved. In other Asian countries, trikes are called “tuk-tuk.”  PHP 11.00   is charged for the first kilometer, after which it is negotiable. Higher rates are charged for outer limits. To avoid any misunderstanding, we recommend that you and the driver agree on the fare before embarking on the journey.
• CALESA. An exciting way to experience Ilocos Norte is to take the Calesa. The minimum charge is P15.00 for the first kilometer.

WHAT TO EAT WHEN IN ILOCOS NORTE

Food forms a significant factor in one’s experience especially if you are visiting the place for the first time. As a traveler, I am not particular about the location or the ambiance, but what I am usually looking for is the authenticity of the taste. Each time I travel, I would want to try something that also tells about the culture of the place.

I have listed below, Ilocano food which I genuinely like.

Long before I visited Ilocos, I have read a lot of articles about Ilocos’ bagnet. I tried this bagnet on my first meal at Ilocos, and I didn’t regret.  The secret of making the Ilocos Bagnet is the slowly deep-frying of pork meat usually in slabs in a low-medium fire. The pork is usually marinated overnight with some natural spices available in the area.

Dinardaran (Crispy Dinuguan)

Another personal favorite that you must try when visiting Ilocos Norte is the Dinardaraan. Dinardaran is the Ilocano term for dinuguan or blood stew.   I don’t know if this is true to all Dinardaran, but what I tried was the version that has crisp in it, which for me is a nice twist considering that it gives the food a different texture. For this dish, they usually use large intestines and a bit of pork loin and pork fat, deep-fried until they are crunchy.

Poqui poqui is a local vegetable Ilocano dish using the eggplant as the main ingredient. Poqui-poqui is a grilled eggplant, peeled, then sauteed with lots of onions, tomatoes, and eggs.

A perfect pair maybe for bagnet is the pinakbet. This vegetable dish uses mainly the ampalaya or bitter melon, eggplant, okra, and string beans. For an added flavor they add some pork and fish sauce.

Perfect as a snack or even as a complete meal. The empanada in Ilocos is one thing which you must try when visiting the Province. The main ingredients for empanada include rice flour for the crust with achuete (for the color); whole egg and mongo sprout or parboiled mongo or grated green papaya for regular orders. Sometimes, Ilocos’ longanisa is added for the filling. Empanada is best when dipped in spicy vinegar.

I was intrigued the first time I saw the tinubong which leads me to try it. Tinubong is a delicacy that is very popular in the entire Ilocos Region. The name of this delicacy is derived from its container, an internode of buho (bulo in Ilocano) with the node at one end, which is called tubong in Ilocano. This native delicacy is made of grounded glutinous rice, sugar, coconut milk, and some coconut meat. These ingredients are being placed in its container (tubong) then steamed. This delicacy can be served as a dessert or as a snack.

I have stayed in two hotels when I visited Ilocos Norte. I can’t remember anymore the name of the other hotel because I don’t intend to recommend it. It was a 5 story hotel without an elevator, so I’m sure you won’t be happy being there. The first hotel which I stayed overnight and the one I stayed on my last night in my entire Ilocos visit was the Isabel Suites. This hotel has 2 buildings (new and old) facing each other. Communication is always essential for anyone traveling. We use the cellular phone to contact our home, even our guides, or to have some follow up with our airlines at times. Bangui Wind Farm. Located in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The Bangui wind farm uses 20 units of 70-metre (230 ft) high VestasV82 1.65 MW wind turbines, arranged in a single row stretching along a nine-kilometer shoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the West Philippine Sea. Ilocos Museum.  Gameng Museo is the term used to call the Ilocos Museum. The museum is well maintained for the people to see the rich heritage of the province. It showcases the history of Ilocos Norte. Gameng means “treasure” and the museum is a tribute to the wealth and history of the region.

Paoay Sand Dunes. One of my favorite outdoor experiences, when I visited Ilocos Norte, was riding the 4X4 vehicle and experiencing a thrill ride on a series of ridges.

Suba Beach. After the hilarious  4×4 ride experience at the dunes,  I think the best part is to have a break at Suba Beach and enjoy the view of the West Philippine Sea.[ Ilocos Norte Tourist Spots + Itinerary, Hotels ]

Sinking Bell Tower. The bell tower of Laoag Cathedral is claimed to be going down below the ground at a rate of an inch a year. The tower, built presumably after the 1707 earthquake, has a foundation of 90 meters (300 ft). The bell tower is made of locally manufactured bricks joined by molasses and juice of sablot leaves mixed with lime and sand and reinforced with four massive columns on each corner and a winding stairway leading to the belfry.

Marcos  Mausoleum.he current resting place of Ferdinand Edralin Marcos. Located at the heart of Batac City, Ilocos Norte, the mausoleum contains the glass-encased coffin in which Marcos’ embalmed body has been on public display since shortly after his remains were brought home in 1993. Ilocos Norte is a province in the northern part of the Philippines. The province faces the South China Sea in the west and The Luzon Strait in the North The sights and view that you can see and visit there are quite rich in natural beauty.

With its rugged mountains, old, historical churches and other establishments and its colorful history and culture, you’ll be sure that you are in for a ride.

We enjoyed our visit, especially in Pagudpud wherein we got to relax since it’s a quiet place and not very touristic.

How to get from manila to ilocos by bus.

Travelling by bus from Manila to Ilocos will take you 10 hours or so on the road. Buses like  Fariñas Trans  and  Partas  Bus have direct routes to Laoag. Fare can costs  900 PHP  for one way.

DAILY BUDGET IN ILOCOS NORTE

Since most spots are either free of entrance fee or the fee is cheap, Laoag day trips can be cheap and budgeted. Aside from experiencing the sand dunes which is one of the most famous yet also one of the most expensive activities to do in Laoag.

With  1500 PHP  can be a good budget with food, transportation and accommodation plus entrance fees to some spots. Bigger budget will of course bring you more memorable experience but Laoag can already be a beautiful experience just being there.

You can go for local food for  50-70 PHP  in local carinderias and around  150 PHP  in local restaurants in Laoag where you will find Filipino and Western food.

For accommodation a  budget room  would cost minimum  1000 PHP ($20 USD) and you can go up to 5000 PHP . There are Airbnb options starting from  $15-25 .

ILOCOS NORTE TOURIST SPOTS

1. paoay church.

The Saint Augustine Church, commonly known as the Paoay Church, is the Roman Catholic church of the municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. Completed in 1710, the church is famous for its distinct architecture highlighted by the enormous buttresses on the sides and back of the building.

2. MARCOS MUSEUM AND MAUSOLEUM

The Ferdinand E. Marcos Presidential Center is a museum situated in Batac, Ilocos Norte dedicated to former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos which also hosts the cenotaph of the former President. The museum shows memorabilia of the late president, from his stint in the armed forces down to his presidency.

3. BACARRA DOMELESS TOWER

Bacarra Church is a Roman Catholic church located in the municipality of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, Philippines under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laoag. The church was founded by the Augustinians, who dedicated it to St. Andrew.

The Bacarra church is famous for its centuries-old, domeless or “beheaded” belfry known as  Torre ti Bacarra .  The structure stands three stories and 50 metres (160 ft) high.

4. MALACAÑANG OF THE NORTH

Malacanang Ti Amianan, or also commonly called as Malacañang of the North, is a presidential museum in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. It was the residence of the family of Ferdinand Marcos when he was the President of the Philippines.

It is a two-story mansion overlooking the Paoay Lake, and consists of seven (supposedly a lucky number for Marcos) rooms, with each room having a theme of historical events from the Marcos era: Study, Agriculture, Diplomacy, OFW (overseas Filipino workers), Culture, Nation Building and Family. The entrance is 20 PHP and it is open from 9am to 5pm daily.

5. JUAN LUNA SHRINE

Located in Badoc Ilocos Norte, Juan Luna Shrine is the reconstruction of Juan Luna’s home. It is a 2-storey house that was said to be burned down around 1861 but fortunately enough, the ruins that remained made it possible to be reconstructed and made it into the Shrine that it is now.

There are collections and displays all over the house where you’ll get to know not just Juan Luna, but also his brother, Antonio Luna as well.

6. DAY TRIP TO VIGAN

A great option while staying in Ilocos Norte is a day trip from Laoag to Vigan that will take less than two hours by bus. Vigan is so beautiful and you can breathe the old Spanish culture around the streets with the calesas.

7. BANGUI WINDMILLS

Bangui Wind Farm  is a  wind farm  in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The wind farm uses  20 units of 70-meter  (230 ft) high VestasV82 1.65 MW  wind turbines , arranged on a single row stretching along a nine-kilometer shoreline off Bangui Bay, facing the West Philippine Sea.

The wind farm is  created to supply electricity to the province.  Thus, the windmills are not only beautiful to look at; they are also useful and environmental tools used to supply electricity.

The beach is so windy an ideal for taking pictures. To get Bangui windmills from Pagudpud is 25 kilometers ride. Once you are there you can buy souvenirs and enjoy the views. There is no entrance fee! Bangui windmills is clear our favorite Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

8. SAUD BEACH

The jewel in the crown of Pagudpud is Saud Beach, with its renowned wonderful fine white sand.  Saud Beach  has cream-colored sand and cool waters,  perfect for swimming and beach bumming in . Have a relaxing day or afternoon just on the beach.

The  resorts in the area makes sure that the shores are clean , so it is a plus point. There is plenty of room for  activities such as volleyball or throwing a Frisbee.

9. BLUE LAGOON

Maira-ira beach is a stretch of white sand and crystal clear waters stretching out to the West Philippine Sea. Dubbed as the  Blue Lagoon , this is one of the most well known destination in Pagudpud.

A number of resorts, luxury and budget, are along the way so tourists can surely enjoy the view and the activities such as swimming and other water sports longer.

The water is so clear and you can even get there with the zipline!

10. TIMANGTANG ROCK

Timangtang rock is a rock formation that can be seen along the seacoast of Sitio Gaoa, Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It is shaped like a sloped hill and is said to be a part of Bantay Abot Cave. They are often called the lovers as Timangtang rock is the male counterpart.

11. burgos lighthouse.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse  also known as Burgos Lighthouse, is a cultural heritage structure in Burgos, Ilocos Norte, that was established during the Spanish Colonial period in the Philippines.

The lighthouse of Cape Bojeador serves shipping heading towards the Pacific Coast heading towards the  Babuyan Channel , also serves ships heading towards the ports of Salomangue and Curmimao. The  entrance fee is 20 PHP .

12. KABIGAN FALLS

Kabigan Falls  is a rustic trail through tropical forest leads visitors to this dramatic natural waterfall. Reaching the place from the main highway is  approximately 30-45 minute walk  depending on your speed and power. The trek going to  Kabigan Falls  is mostly in a flat area so you’ll have time to enjoy the beautiful panorama.

It’s mandatory to hire a guide for  120 PHP  to reach the waterfalls. Once in Kabigan waterfalls is a nice place for relaxing and it’s not so crowded.

13. KAPURPURAWAN ROCK FORMATIONS

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation is a natural rock formation created through the years by the natural forces of the ocean on  the rocky coast of Burgos, Ilocos Norte,  just a few minutes from the  Cape Bojeador.

Kapurpurawan comes from an Ilocano word “puraw” which means white. Since most of the rock formations in that area are white,  local folks called it “Kapurpurawan”.

14. DOS HERMANOS ISLAND

The Dos Hermanos Islands are two rock formations located off the northern coast of Maira-ira Point in Pagupud, Ilocos Norte, the Philippines.  The twin islands are often visited by tourists, and are a natural landmark of Pagudpud.

15. BANTAY ABOT CAVE

Bantay Abot cave might look like a cave, but it is not really a cave. It is actually a hill that was  wrecked by an earthquake in the 80’s  leaving a hole in the middle. The top of the  cave is covered with lush green vegetation  thus adding the beauty of the cave.

To get to the interior of the cave, you have to go down a few concrete staircase and a rocky part going up to the hole.

16. PATAPAT VIADUCT

The Patapat Viaduct is a viaduct at the municipality of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, a coastal resort town on the northernmost tip of Luzon Island in the Philippines.  The bridge is elevated 31 meters over sea level.  The views are so impressive and it was one of our favorite Ilocos Norte tourist spots.

17. SINKING BELL TOWER

St. William’s Cathedral in Laoag City is famous for its Sinking Bell Tower. It is one of the things that will capture the attention of the tourists upon entering the city. The bell tower is one of the landmarks of Spanish colony in the Philippines.

The tower has earned its “sinking” reputation because it is so heavy and it was built on sandy foundations that it has been consistently sinking into the ground.

18. LA PAZ SAND DUNES

The La Paz Sand Dunes  is an 85-square-kilometer protected sandy coastal desert and beach located in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, in the Philippines. The area is known locally by the name Bantay Bimmaboy, a name which refers to the common perception that the dunes resemble pigs (“baboy” in Filipino) in shape.

The area is also known as the Desert of the North and is a popular location for shooting films.

19. PAOAY LAKE NATIONAL PARK

Paoay Lake, locally known as Dacquel a Danum, is a lake in the municipality of Paoay in northwestern Luzon in the Philippines. It is the largest lake in the province of Ilocos Norte and one of the largest natural lakes in the area.

20. SANTA MONICA CHURCH

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, commonly known as the Santa Maria Church is the parish church of Santa Maria in Ilocos Sur province, Philippines.

21. SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH

WHAT TO EAT IN ILOCOS NORTE

Bagnet  is the double-fried crispy pork specialty of Ilocos. It’s  a cross between chicharon and lechon kawali  where the lean  meat is crispy but not dry  and the pork skin is  fried to a crisp.  You’ll taste the natural taste oh so yummy taste of the pork!

Pinakbet is a popular Ilocano vegetable dish. t is a vegetable stew made with tomatoes, eggplant, string beans, okra, and bitter gourd. The dish might have different version all over the country but the Ilocano pinakbet uses a much loved fermented fish sauce called  bagoong isda  to season the dish, so it is really a must try!

Ilocos Norte has the best tasting empanadas. If you are in Laoag, you can go to Batac which was about 30 minutes away to buy empanadas. Batac is like the empanada capital in Ilocos Norte. They even have Empanada Festival on the City Charter Day each 23rd of June.

Ilocano Longganisa might be famous, but it is said that the ones from Laoag, specifically in San Nicolas Public Market are jucier because it contains more fat, making it also more lethal. Unlike the Vigan longganisa, Laoag has minimal vinegar or contains none at all.

Tinubong is a local delicacy that means cooking the mixture of young coconut meat, sugar, margarine, cheese, and ground glutinous rice inside a young bamboo or tubong. It is a native favorite and is usually made and serve for occasions such as Christmas, New Year and even Birthdays.

FESTIVALS IN ILOCOS NORTE

Dinaklisan festival.

Celebrated from April 29 to May 1, Dinaklisan Festival is celebrated to pay tribute to the fishermen and to give homage to the Almighty for the rich marine life in the sea. People come together for the float parade, street dancing and the coronation of the town’s beauty contest winner.

BAC-BACARRA FESTIVAL

Bac-Bacara Festival is a festival celebrated to honor the town’s patron saint, St. Andrew de Apostle. It happens every November and it started in 2005. The legendary word “bac-bacarra” is a specie of freshwater fish abundant in the river during the 15th century which gave birth to the town’s name.

PAMULINAWEN FESTIVAL

It is celebrated in Laoag every February 10, which is the feast day of Saint William the Hermit, its patron saint. It is an affair which is primarily done to give honor, pay our homage and extend our thanks for the benevolence and generosity of Saint William. Through his intercession to the Lord, Laoag City has been blessed and spared from calamities and disasters.

Construction of the church began in 1704 and was finished 90 years later. Masses are heard in Ilocano, English, and Tagalog.

Standing tall over the black sand beach, the windmills make up the first wind farm in the country and generate enough electricity to support 40% of the power requirements of Ilocos Norte.

You can clearly see the windmills on the road leading to the bay. There’s little to no signs to tell you where to turn, though, so it’s best to book a day tour in Ilocos so you don’t miss the turn going down the beach.

There is no entrance fee to the Bangui Windmills. There are a few souvenir stalls in the area, so you might want to consider getting a little wooden replica of a wind turbine as a souvenir.

The sand dunes of La Paz and Paoay, the natural coastal desert shaped by sea and wind, are located along the coast near Laoag City.

Many tourists go to Laoag for the sand dunes, or do a  Pagudpud tour  to swim in its beaches. You can also book a Laoag and Pagudpud day tour if you want to explore both destinations. In the nearby town of Burgos, a hidden gem is waiting to be discovered: the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation.

It is a natural formation that juts out of the rock along the beach. Its name was derived from the Ilocano word “puraw” meaning “white.”

The rock formation is known for its creamy white rock surface sculpted and shaped by the relentless pounding waves.

The rock formation is about 3km away from the drop-off point along the main highway. From the drop-off point, you need to go down a flight of stairs and trek towards the beach to reach the rock formation.

The museum displays memorabilia and some personal effects of the Marcos family. It’s open Tuesdays to Sundays from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 N.N. and 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Entrance fee is PHP 30.00 per person.

Since its construction, the bell tower has been sinking at a rate of about 1 inch per year. But despite its slow descent into the underground (literally), the bell tower still rings its bell every Sunday for mass. 

One of the largest natural lakes in the province of Ilocos Norte, Paoay Lake draws visitors not just because it’s right beside the Malacañang of the North, but because of its serene and calm beauty. 

The local legend says that the lake used to be the site of a barangay called San Juan de Sahagun, which sank after an earthquake and eventually submerged the village.

Today, Paoay Lake is a feeding stop for migratory birds, and you can go birdwatching near its banks. It’s a tourist attraction often included in

Make sure you don’t miss out on La Preciosa’s moist and fluffy carrot cake topped with white icing and sweetened shredded carrots, considered by locals and visitors as one of the best carrot cakes in town.

An old Tabacalera warehouse found a new lease of life as the Museo Ilocos Norte, which showcases the cultural heritage of the Ilocos Region. 

It houses a large collection of Ilocano, Igorot, and Itneg traditional clothing and artifacts, as well as exhibits telling the stories of the region’s Spanish-era churches.

If you’re lucky, you might be able to catch special performances and view exhibits from local artists.

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., and on Sundays from 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

Laoag Church, also known as St. William’s Cathedral, is the current seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ilocos Norte. It was first built out of wood and thatch in the 1500s.

Over the years, the church has evolved to its current Italian Renaissance architecture design. Masses are held in Ilocano, English, and Tagalog. It’s also a part of a day tour in Ilocos .

Despite its name, the Rizal Amusement Park isn’t really an amusement park, at least not in the conventional sense. Instead of circus rides and game booths, this park is instead a huge garden filled with lush greens.

The Batac Museum, also known as the Marcos Museum and Mausoleum, is dedicated to the late President Ferdinand Marcos.

View various pieces of memorabilia of the former president that are on display inside the museum. The museum also served as the old resting place of the former president.

There is no entrance fee to the museum, but donations are welcome. The museum is open daily from 8:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.
