Public Transport in Dusseldorf: Buying Tickets and Using Trams

Updated on  February 7, 2024

Be it trains, buses or trams, public transport in Düsseldorf can get you anywhere you want affordably and conveniently.

It's so easy to travel around Düsseldorf that it's known as the "15-minute city" — almost everything important can be reached within 15 minutes!

So here is your ultimate guide on taking public transport in Düsseldorf , where we explain your best options, the best journey-mapping apps, how to purchase bus or tram tickets, and more! 👇

How To Navigate Public Transport In Dusseldorf

Types of public transport in dusseldorf: trams, buses, u-bahn, s-bahn.

In Düsseldorf you can ride the public transport system and often get to your destination quicker than walking or driving!

Here are the types of public transport you'll find in this city:

The U-Bahn, also known as untergrundbahn , are city trains that connect different spots within city limits.

They typically make more frequent stops and are similar to metro trains. These stations are identifiable by signs featuring a white 'U' on a blue background.

With the S-Bahn, traveling to nearby places is easy and fast. These are trains that usually connect cities with their suburbs or nearby towns in some cases.

They cover a larger area than U-Bahns and have stations spaced farther apart. S-Bahns mostly run on the surface, but they can also go underground, especially within city limits.

These tramways run on rails alongside regular roads and make multiple stops within the city center. Think of them as something between a bus and a U-Bahn.

Buses go everywhere in the city, and as especially helpful when you're in the suburbs or are planning to minimize walking on foot.

Night Express

During Friday and Saturday nights, as well as before public holidays, you can count on the Night Express (NachtExpress) departing from the main station. While most public transportation winds down shortly after midnight, these services keep rolling from 1 a.m. to 4 a.m., ensuring night owls can get safely from the party zones to the main train station and beyond.

Regional Trains

If you want to explore even further to nearby suburbs or cities like Cologne, regional trains (RE, RB) are perfect for these long-distance trips.

Purchasing Tickets And Fares: Single Tickets, Day Tickets, Weekly, And Monthly Passes

In Düsseldorf, fares are calculated based on short trips and fare zones.

Short Trip Ticket

A short trip ticket, or Kurzstrecken-Ticket , lets you travel up to three stations or 1.5 km for 20 minutes after it's activated. It's only for direct trips and can be used on buses, trams, and the U-Bahn, but not on regional or S-Bahn trains!

Apart from short-trip tickets, most public transport tickets in Düsseldorf are priced according to the zone you're traveling in.

There are a few main fare categories, and most tourists who only plan to travel within the city will only need to buy tickets for zone A3.

Tickets for Occasional Rides

There are several ticket types available, but there are only a few that tourists usually get. Single Tickets (EinzelTicket) are best if you're just making one trip. If you plan on traveling more in one day, there's the 24-hour Ticket (24-StundenTicket) .

🚨 TIP:  Get the Düsseldorf tourist card to enjoy free unlimited public transport rides   and discounts on tourist attractions!

➡️ Get your DüsseldorfCard here ! ⬅️

For those who plan to travel for a week, the Weekly Pass is a good choice as it helps you save a little more money.

You can also choose from other options like the 4 trip ticket (4erTicket) , which is good for four journeys, or the 10erTicke t for ten trips.

Want to travel all month? Get the 30-day pass called Ticket1000 or opt for the same pass but start before 9.00 a.m. for a bigger discount.

Whether you get the Düsseldorf tourist card or a transport pass, they make regular travel cheaper than buying single tickets each time.

Lastly, kids under six years old ride for free, always!

Where to Buy Public Transport Ticket in Dusseldorf

Buying your public transport tickets in Dusseldorf is a breeze. Wherever you turn, there's probably somewhere you can get your tickets from.

The best places are the ticket machines at train stations; they are easy to spot and use.

If you need to speak to someone, there are five customer service centers scattered around the city, such as at Main station or Heinrich-Heine-Allee station.

Otherwise, you can get tickets from kiosks and lottery ticket offices too.

Another convenient way is downloading the Rheinbahn app or redy app on your phone, where you can plan your journey, then buy tickets before you hop on a tram or bus.

Lastly, bus drivers can also sell you a ticket on the bus! How convenient is that?

Best Savings!

Only Visiting For A Day or Two?

Then consider the DüsseldorfCard (24 or 48 hours) — you'll enjoy free unlimited public transport rides & attractive deals across the city.

For example, get cheaper or even free entry to museums, & save money on city tours .

It's hands down the best deal for tourists.

Frequency And Operational Hours

In Düsseldorf, buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and regional trains (RE, RB) usually run from 9 a.m. until midnight.

Most trains go every 5-10 minutes. However, as you head out to the suburbs, especially in the evenings or on weekends, you might wait 20 to 30 minutes between trains.

On the other hand, buses might be less frequent. You could wait anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for the next one. So they're also not the best choice when you're in a rush because they're affected by traffic and can be unpredictable, especially on weekends.

But keep in mind that different lines might have their own schedules, so it's always good to double-check!

Ticket Prices

Ticket prices in the city mainly vary depending on the number of zones you travel through. A single ticket for one zone costs about €2.90, while a day ticket covering all zones is approximately €9.

The great thing about using public transportation in Düsseldorf is that your tickets work for all types of travel. With just one ticket, you can change between buses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and trams without having to buy another ticket or pay more.

However, if you plan to make multiple trips across several days, it may be more cost-effective to purchase a weekly or monthly pass for unlimited travel within your specified zones.

👉 For tourists, there's also the option of the DüsseldorfCard , which provides 24- or 48-hour free access to public transport and discounts at various attractions in the city 😊

Validating Your Tickets

Before boarding, you must validate your ticket to avoid getting fined. When using trams or buses, look for the red or yellow validation machines on platforms or inside the vehicle. Simply insert your ticket into the machine, and it will be stamped with the date and time!

But tickets purchased from ticket machines on board trains and buses are valid from the time of purchase and do not require validation.

Benefits Of Using Public Transport In Dusseldorf

Cost-effective.

Compared to renting a car or taking a private taxi, you save a lot more by using public transport. Sometimes public transport is so efficient, you might get to your destinations at the same time (or faster) than if you took a car!

Ticket prices are budget-friendly too, especially when considering the convenience and coverage of the network.

Environmentally Friendly

Using public transportation in Düsseldorf reduces the number of cars on the road, which helps decrease air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. [ 1 ]

By choosing trams, buses, or bikes over private vehicles, you are actively participating in creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly world!

Avoid Traffic Congestion And Parking Hassles

You can dodge traffic congestion, and parking headaches too. It's no secret that parking fees can be steep in the city too. With a well-connected tram, bus, S-Bahn and U-Bahn system, getting around the city is more stress-free than ever.

Explore The City With Ease

You can effortlessly visit popular landmarks like the Rhine Tower, MedienHafen, and Königsallee via public transport, without having to walk very far.

Even attractions in the outskirts, like Schloss Benrath, are easily reached using the well-connected metro system, no matter where in Düsseldorf you're staying .

When you're ready to venture further from central Düsseldorf, regional trains are available for seamless travel to neighboring towns and cities.

Tips For Efficiently Using Public Transport

Checking schedules and routes.

Plan your journey in Düsseldorf by checking tram and bus schedules beforehand using the Rheinbahn app — that's the best way to get updated on arrival times or delays.

Even at the station or tram stop, I'll watch the digital displays for real-time updates, just to make sure my rides are on track.

However, consider avoiding rush hour to dodge the crowds, especially during peak times.

Using Maps And Apps

There are many great transport apps available from both Rheinbahn and other local authorities to help you plan your journeys and make it convenient to purchase tickets.

You can also get free maps from tourist information offices, or download them for easy access.

These resources are handy for finding the best routes, stops, and connections!

Watching For Pickpockets

Even though Düsseldorf is generally safe , pickpockets, especially in crowded areas like trams and buses, are not unheard of.

Keep an eye on your belongings, particularly in tourist spots and during rush hour times when it gets busy, especially in places such as tram stations and inside the tram itself.

Be cautious of anyone invading your personal space or causing distractions; these could be tactics used by pickpockets to steal from you. In fact, use secure bags and wallets that are not easily accessible to others.

Trust your instincts and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities immediately if you feel threatened!

Being Aware Of Rush Hour Times

Rush hours in Düsseldorf are usually early morning and late afternoon during weekdays.

Planning your travel outside these peak times can save you from long waiting lines and packed buses or trains.

Conclusion: Dusseldorf's Public Transport

Düsseldorf is known as the "15-minute city", thanks to its superb public transport system.

It's convenient, cost-effective and easy to navigate even for non-German speakers!

How to Take Public Transport in Dusseldorf:

Here are the steps to take public transport in Düsseldorf:

1. Choose your mode of transport: Bus? Tram? U-Bahn? Using the Rheinbahn app can help you plan your journey with the most effective route, based on time and date.

2. Purchase a ticket: You can buy tickets at ticket machines located at most stops and stations, kiosks or through the Rheinbahn app. Tickets are also available for purchase on trams and buses.

Ticket costs are defined by zones, and the zones are defined by bright color-codes, so it's easy to understand which ticket to buy.

👋 If you have a DüsseldorfCard , then you don't have to fuss over ticket prices, because your card includes unlimited free travel on all means of public transport.

3. Validate your ticket:  Before boarding, you must validate your ticket at one of the machines located on the platform or inside the vehicle.

4. Board the vehicle:  Wait for your bus, tram, or train at the designated stop or station. Trains and buses regularly go at least every 20 minutes until the very late evening and then thin out to 30 to 40 minutes.

During rush hours, most of the trains go every 5 minutes and most buses every 10 minutes.

5. Get off at your destination:  Listen for announcements or watch for signs indicating your stop. In the city center, you can reach almost any place within a couple of minutes.

6. Repeat steps 2-5 as needed:  If you need to transfer to a bus, make sure to show your ticket to the driver when you board.

7. Consider other modes of transport: If you prefer, you can also use bicycles, carpool services, or walking to get around Düsseldorf.

Why The Dusseldorf Card Is The Best Way To Explore Dusseldorf

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

We’re telling everyone who will listen Dusseldorf was an unexpected but total delight on our recent travels around Europe. Berlin and Munich might get all the attention, but Dusseldorf is pretty, cycle-friendly, arty and has a great nightlife. What’s not to love?

There’s tons to see and do as well, which is where the Dusseldorf card comes in. After all, no one likes having to constantly think about budgeting when you’re trying to sightsee and fiddling with ticket machines in a foreign language can be a nightmare.

We’re big fans of city cards like these which we also used with the Vienna Card , KL Pass and Taipei Fun Pass — but this is one of the better ones we’ve come across. Although the initial outgoing might seem steep, you’ll find you can quickly make the money back. Especially if you make the most of the available attractions and transport options.

So, what is it and what are the advantages? The Dusseldorf card is a travel card that offers you discounts on attractions around the city. You can buy it for 24, 48, 72 or 96 hours as either a single or a group ticket and you get free travel on all public transport in Dusseldorf as well as discounts of up to 100% on museum entry, guided tours, events and even souvenirs.

See, we told you it was a total bargain! If you’re the organised type you can buy it online in advance, or if you decide to get it once you’re there, simply head to the Tourism Office. Once you date it, it’s activated and then you have however many days (depending on what you bought) to use it was much as possible.

Dusseldorf Card

We love that it’s not only useful for transport and big attractions. Certain food and drink places are part of the scheme, for example Zum Schiffchen will give you a free Altbier if you’re eating there; you can also get discounts on things like bike rentals, rounds of golf and trampoline parks!

Quite a few sightseeing tours will give you a discount with the Dusseldorf Card as well. If you’ve got a taste for Altbier, go on the Altbier Safari and get a couple of Euros off; or get a 20% discount on the Christmas tour or MedienHafen tour.

We’d totally recommend using it on a boat trip – you know how much we love seeing a new city from the water and floating about on a boat! In the winter months you can also use it to zip between all those amazing Christmas markets….

It’s incredibly easy to use and very cheap. For an individual, prices start at €10 for 24 hours, then go up to €15.50 for 48 hours, €17 for 72 hours and €21 for 96 hours. We know; we couldn’t believe it, either! The group tickets are even better value – a group is classed as 3 adults or a family of 2 adults and 2 kids under 14.

We’ve talked a bit about some of the discounts the Dusseldorf Card offers, but what about its best feature, the free entry to attractions? Below we’ve got a selection of our Dusseldorf highlights that will help you get maximum value from your card!

But if you are not yet convinced on Dusseldorf as a destination, we have also put together 15 top things to do in Düsseldorf  that is sure to have you booking the next available flight…

Dusseldorf Card

Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum (free entry)

To be honest, we’d recommend going to this unique place even if you didn’t have the Dusseldorf Card , but with it you get free entry, so heading there is a no-brainer. Part aquarium, part natural history museum, part adventure through the history of biodiversity, it’s a child-friendly and well-designed museum that houses many a fascinating surprise.

There are 25 themed rooms that together tell visitors about the development of marine life over time. In the tanks you can see crocodiles, seals, piranhas and other amphibians, reptiles and insects; in other areas you can walk through desert or tropical environments.

Dusseldorf Card

Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (free entry)

Dusseldorf has one of the best art scenes in the country due to its history as the artists’ hub in West Germany. Not everyone has moved to Berlin and you can still find innovative art and forward-thinking galleries galore. Kunsthalle Dusseldorf is one such place, a Brutalist concrete cube that houses an ever-changing collection of work.

Its aim is to not have its own permanent exhibition, but to be a blank canvas for pioneering shows and ideas, and thus to contribute to discussion and artistic development.

Admission is free with the Dusseldorf Card so pop in and see what’s new while you’re there!

Kunsthalle Dusseldorf

KIT – Kunst im Tunnel (free entry)

This is an underground exhibition space of 850 meters squared belonging to Kunsthalle Dusseldorf (and therefore also free entry for card holders).

As you might have guessed from the name, it’s located in a tunnel with a café above it beside the Rhine. The large space shows off the modern art to good effect as, like its mother gallery, it works as a blank canvas for the artist.

Concerts and DJ nights have also been held in the space, making it a very happening place to go – we don’t think the music events are free, though, sorry!

KIT - Kunst im Tunnel

Filmmuseum Düsseldorf (free entry)

Open since 1993, this interactive museum is a fascinating insight into the world of film with a wide-ranging exhibition covering the silver screen from its origins to now.

Free entry with the Dusseldorf Card makes it even more worth visiting. Even if you’re not a film buff, the collection of vintage film equipment and the set models are really interesting, and the replica film studio makes you feel like a producer!

The sections that focus on special effects, 3D and animation are highlights – you can even play about with blue screen techniques. Trust us; it isn’t only the kids who get enraptured by this!

Filmmuseum Düsseldorf

Goethe-Museum Düsseldorf (free entry)

While the exhibits at this museum devoted to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe are great (especially when you get free entry), it’s the beautiful house that holds the museum that really grabbed our attention.

The imposing red-brick building has gorgeous views of the surrounding park and is elegantly decorated, if a little faded! Inside you’ll find a collection of manuscripts, first drafts and final copies of Goethe’s work, artworks and coins all linked to the poet’s life.

If you’re not a huge Goethe devotee it might be a little over your head, but it’s worth a visit with your Dusseldorf card!

Traveling to Dusseldorf in every season of the year has its own interesting. If you are not like the hustle and bustle, you should avoid July or November because this is the time when most of the major festivals in Dusseldorf take place. This time, there are 2 big festivals, namely The Biggest Funfair on the Rhine (Größte Kirmes am Rhein) taking place in July and Dusseldorf Carnival in November. Some types of tickets to getting around Dusseldorf by public transport:

  • Single ticket: €2.7/way
  • Day pass – TagesTicket: €7. Tickets are only valid until 3 am the next day, not 24 hours. Tickets purchased in groups of 2-5 people will be more profitable than buying individually. (If I remember correctly, the price is €13 for a group of up to 5 people).

You can buy these two types of tickets directly on the bus or at the orange vending ticket machines or on the tram.

The Dusseldorf Card is free for bus, tram and train travel within the city as well as free for some museums and 20% discount for other activities.

Dusseldorf travel blog: Where to stay?

During my trip, I stayed at a studio apartment , about a 15-minute walk from the central station. The apartment is fully equipped and quite new and modern. The house is only a few steps from the tram station and from here to get to the central area, the old town is only 10-15 minutes. In addition, this place uses a bluetooth check-in system, so you don’t have to meet the owner and look for the key box like other places. This is probably the first place I see self-check-in in such a modern way. Rental price is €39/night.

The most visited palace in Dusseldorf. However, on my trip because I didn’t have too much time, this place was about 10km from the center, so I skipped it. Instead, I visited the Goethe-Museum (Address: Jacobistraße 2, 40211 Düsseldorf, Germany / Hours: 11AM–5PM; Monday: Closed;Saturday: 1–5PM) because this place is quite close to other Dusseldorf’s tourist attractions.

The Rhine River

travel card dusseldorf

This is a very unique beauty of the city of Dusseldorf. This is a great place for a walk. Lots of eateries and cafes are located next to the river. You will easily find a suitable sitting position to enjoy the view. In addition, the river is also one of the extremely important waterway transport networks of the city and surrounding areas. In the early morning or late afternoon, people will flock to both sides of the river to admire the scenery and enjoy the fresh air here.

Dusseldorf travel blog: Suggested Dusseldorf travel itinerary

You should take the tram to the stations near Kö-Bogen or Goethe-Museum. The first place to visit should be the Goethe-Museum, which is the most suitable starting point. Dusseldorf self-sufficient travel itinerary 1 day can go as follows:

Goethe-Museum – Church of St. Mariae Empfaengnis – Church of Johannes – Kö bogen- Konigsallee – Rheinuferpromenade – Church of An St. Lambertus – Old Quarter.

travel card dusseldorf

Most of these places are very close to each other, so walking is pretty easy. Especially if you starting from Johannes Church, these locations must be said to be quite close together.

Rheinuferpromenade is a road along the river so you don’t have to go to the right place like Google suggests, just go straight from Konigsallee to the riverside. Also, because I didn’t have too much time, I just watched the Rhine Tower from afar, not visit it.

Besides, right next to the Johannes church is a very large shopping area. You can come here to visit and eat. In the basements of this central area, there are many restaurants serving Japanese to Thai, Italian, German… cuisines.

travel card dusseldorf

While exploring, I also accidentally discovered a pretty famous Japanese restaurant called Naniwa . I counted more than 20 people queuing outside waiting for their turn. This restaurant is located quite close to St. Mariae Empfaengnis Church. Honestly, this is the first time that I have come to a city where I see so much Japanese people. Going to other European countries is mainly seeing Chinese people.

Dusseldorf blog: What to eat?

Traditional dish Rheinischer Sauerbraten . The beef is marinated for a few days with vinegar and spices, then baked. Served with gravy and raisins.

travel card dusseldorf

Also you should try Himmel und Erde (Heaven and Earth) (pudding with stewed apples mixed with mashed potatoes). Feel free to enjoy traditional German dishes such as German beer, curry sausage, potato salad, pork leg served with pickled cabbage, meatballs…

travel card dusseldorf

Dusseldorf is famous for its distinctive beer taste. You will easily find attractive cups of beer in any bar. The tradition of making Original Schlüssel German beer here goes back more than 170 years.

travel card dusseldorf

Dusseldorf blog: Traveling costs

  • Hotel: €33/person/night
  • Meals: €30/day
  • Dusseldorf Card: €10

The total cost is about €70-80/day. I find the cost of eating here is a bit more expensive than Cologne and Berlin. A meal here averages around €11-12. I ate pho (beef noodle soup) at a Vietnamese restaurant, the price was €12.5 and the ramen of the Japanese restaurant in the shopping center near the Johannes church was also priced at the same price.

Dusseldorf travel blog: Some tips before you go

travel card dusseldorf

  • I was quite surprised because I did not think that Dusseldorf tourism would be so developed and notable. I saw most of the streets in the central area and the old town were really crowded. It’s like having to jostle step by step. Dusseldorf is much more crowded compared to Cologne although Cologne is more famous and familiar with tourists.
  • As a city of fashion and art, there are many interesting museums in Dusseldorf. If you have free time, check it out.
  • For those who are fashionistas, Dusseldorf is indeed an ideal destination. There are countless high-end fashion stores that come with extremely good quality of service.
  • If you are going from Dusseldorf to Colgne try searching for tickets on the Omio site. Travel time from Dusseldorf to Cologne is only about 20 minutes and usually there is a national DB train company running quite often. Although the travel time is quite short, the fare is usually in the range of €13-17. Instead of taking this train, I recommend you to look for the Flixtrain. I remember that there were only a few trains a day, but the fare was only €3.

Travel tips every first time Düsseldorf visitor needs to know

First time in tech-town? Get to know the city with our selection of travel tips for first-time visitors to Düsseldorf

Hitting up Düsseldorf for the first time? We’ve got some tips for you. Over the last century or so, Düsseldorf has developed from a collection of disparate villages into one of the most exciting cities in Germany, a hub of innovation and culture that attracts visitors, entrepreneurs and adventurers in equal measure. The ‘traditional yet modern’ cliche is alive and well here, with a community vibe that juxtaposes that glittering skyline and business-friendly mentality of the city. Our collection of travel tips for first-time visitors to Düsseldorf will help you navigate the city and make the most of this marvellous place, with its impressive range of restaurants and exciting attractions .

RECOMMENDED: The 19 best things to do in Düsseldorf

An email you’ll actually love

The world revolves around the tower

1.  The world revolves around the tower

Getting your bearings in Düsseldorf can be hard. With neither a “true” downtown nor an easily discernible pattern to the street layout, the easiest way to determine where you’re at is to look for the round television tower, the Rheinturm, located amid the Medienhafen and directly on the river. It’s also a great place to grab a drink and see the skyline.

Learn how to order

2.  Learn how to order

Visitors are often shocked at the lack of friendliness by customer service personnel. The first place many visitors notice this is in cafes or restaurants, where servers only come to you when called—and called in the right way. Snapping your fingers, whistling or calling out garcon is the epitome of rudeness. A raised hand and wave in their direction will suffice. In breweries, you can also order another by simply making eye contact with the server and giving the thumbs-up sign, signifying the number one.

Dress to impress

3.  Dress to impress

One of Germany’s wealthiest cities, Düsseldorf is also one of the country’s most fashion-conscious destinations. Although torn denim and sneakers are more acceptable attire today than they were just a few years ago, there is still an unwritten dress code in many establishments. If you’re headed to the Oper am Rhein or embarking on a shopping spree on the Kö , make sure to dress the part or risk being turned away at the door. You can leave the penguin tails at home—just don’t show up in flip-flops and tank tops.

A cold stare is a form of greeting

4.  A cold stare is a form of greeting

Don’t take it personally if no one says hello as you pass by. Or when you walk into a store. Or even in a restaurant when someone comes to take your order. Germans are a formal bunch and an expressionless nod is often used as a polite form of greeting—and one you should reciprocate.

This city can be sleepy

5.  This city can be sleepy

For a city of more than one million inhabitants and with several universities, Düsseldorf can be eerily quiet late at night. While pubs and clubs in the Altstadt—especially around Bolker Strasse or Ratinger Strasse—are open every day, in other neighbourhoods finding something doing after 10pm on a weekday can feel near-impossible. One area to look is Bilk, the student district, or Pemplefort, filled with bars and restaurants which get lively on warm summer days.

Don’t miss the (free) art

6.  Don’t miss the (free) art

Home to the Arts Academy that counts Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter and Andreas Gursky as alumni and where some of the biggest artists of the 20th century have taught, Düsseldorf has a reputation as a leading arts centre to uphold. Grab an Art:card from the Tourist Office and get entry for a year to most of the city’s museums. Or check out the K20 and K21 Museums after 6pm on the first Wednesday evening of every month for free entry. Just be sure to note: most museums are closed Mondays.

…It’s not just in museums!

7.  …It’s not just in museums!

Lovers of modern and contemporary art will feel drawn to the more than 100 galleries dotted around the city, especially in the Stadtmitte neighbourhood. Openings occur nearly every weekend and since 2017, the city plays host to its own annual art fair.

Japanese culture is everywhere

8.  Japanese culture is everywhere

Home to Europe’s third-largest Japanese community, Düsseldorf celebrates the contributions of the country’s immigrants with a city-wide party and awesome fireworks display over the Rhine on one of the last weekends in May. If you’re here at another time, check out the area around Schadowstrasse for some of the best Japanese food in Germany.

Keep cash on hand

9.  Keep cash on hand

No matter what you’re doing or where you’re going, it’s always a good idea to keep cash on you. Although Düsseldorf is home to loads of start-ups and new media companies, banking is still behind the times. Few taxis, pubs and dining establishments take credit or bank cards and even fewer places are set up for mobile pay. The pandemic has changed this somewhat, but better to be safe than sorry.

Make a shopping bee-line for the Kö-Bogen

10.  Make a shopping bee-line for the Kö-Bogen

Königsallee is one of Germany’s most expensive shopping streets, with luxury goods stores like Gucci and Chanel drawing shoppers from around the world. Divided by a canal and lined with chestnut trees, the kilometre-long boulevard is one of the city’s prettiest streets. Bordering the Altstadt, it runs from the city’s main park, the Hofgarten , and is filled with fantastic architecture, including the Kö-Bogen shopping mall, designed by Daniel Liebeskind.

There’s media in Media Harbor

11.  There’s media in Media Harbor

Düsseldorf is not only Germany’s fashion capital, it’s also home to hundreds of advertising agencies, publishing houses and several television studios. It is a place concerned with appearances and nowhere is that more apparent than at the Medienhafen , the city’s upscale riverfront office district with buildings designed by Frank Gehry that are well worth a look.

Round up to tip

12.  Round up to tip

Tipping in Germany is a polite show of appreciation, but don’t go overboard. Most servers and taxi drivers are happy if you round up to the nearest Euro or two and will look at you funny if you approach even ten percent of the bill.

Altbier is no joke

13.  Altbier is no joke

It bears repeating that not all beer is created equally. The top-fermented lager native to the region may be low in price, but not in alcohol content. Drink slowly. Drink wisely. And while drinking, keep in mind that public toilets are a rarity.

Watch traffic while on trams

14.  Watch traffic while on trams

Düsseldorf has an extensive public transportation network comprised of U-Bahn (underground subways), S-Bahn (suburban rail), buses and trams. The trams, denoted by their numbers 701-709, run on tracks in the middle of busy city streets, so while boarding and exiting, it’s vital to stay aware of traffic. Pedestrian-tram accidents are increasingly common so pay attention, especially with earbuds in.

Always stamp your ticket

15.  Always stamp your ticket

Public transportation runs on the honour system, with authorities often boarding mid-trip to ensure everyone has a valid ticket. You can buy your ticket from a machine onboard (not the driver) and be sure to time-stamp it—or risk a fine.

This is a cycling city

16.  This is a cycling city

With lots of parks and marked bike lanes, Düsseldorf is a great city to see by bike. Bike-sharing is simple and easy using the FordPass mobile app/DB Call a Bike program. But remember that bikes are subject to the same rules of the road as vehicle traffic: stop at red lights, don’t turn right on red and make sure your lights are on after dusk.

if it’s late, hail a taxi

17.  if it’s late, hail a taxi

With no official closing times, club nights can bleed into the wee hours of the morning. Planning a night out? Figure in cab fare for the ride home, as public transport runs sporadically after midnight and before dawn.

Be aware of Karneval closings

18.  Be aware of Karneval closings

Germany’s Rhineland region celebrates the start of Lent every year by throwing a five-day party before the fasting begins. Beginning at 11:11 on Weiberfastnacht (Ladies Night) on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (usually in mid-February to mid-March), the streets are flush with drunken revellers. Most bars are open, but many shops are closed for the party, which carries on through the following Tuesday. One highlight is the Rosenmontag parade on Monday, filled with drum corps, dancers and floats poking fun at politics. Though it may not be fun for everyone, it’s definitely worth a visit at least once.

Beware of swift currents

19.  Beware of swift currents

The Rhine may be the city’s centrepiece, but dipping more than a toe into the busy shipping channel isn’t a wise idea. Grab a beer and hang out riverside (not too close to the edge) or take a boat cruise down to nearby Cologne if the water’s calling.

Sundays are for strolling

20.  Sundays are for strolling

German law has that most shops remain closed on Sundays, and the centuries-old rule has created a culture of Sunday walkers. One of the best places to bust out your walking shoes is the Rhine Promenade. If green parks are more your style, the botanical gardens surrounding Benrath Castle have plenty of paths to get lost in your thoughts.

Time to explore

The best things to do in Düsseldorf

The best things to do in Düsseldorf

This medieval city on the banks of the Rhine recently celebrated its 730th birthday, but Düsseldorf isn’t resting on its historic laurels. With a slew of cutting-edge architecture and a booming arts scene both above and below ground, the capital of the of the North-Rhine Westphalia state is fast becoming one of Germany’s most lively metropolises.

What to do in Dusseldorf with the Dusseldorf Card

October 19, 2017 by Contributor

What to do in Dusseldorf with the Dusseldorf Card

Dusseldorf is the beautiful home of over a half million people. It is also the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the seventh most populous city in Germany. It has also been my home for the past 3 years and I love finding new and interesting things to visit with the kids, or when family comes to visit.

Free things to do in Dusseldorf with the Dusseldorf Card

There are various ways to see the city; day trips from out of town, move in and take months to explore every single square inch of the city, and everything in between. Personally, I like to visit a city once, good and proper. I want to see the most of what a city has to offer, and consulting the local Tourism Board is usually the perfect way to go (well, that and Travel Blogs of course).

What do they suggest I visit, how long do I need to visit properly/without regrets and how much is it going to cost me? City cards have a great way of answering all of those questions; I now know I have X number of days to get this giant list done, most entrance fees are already covered (or heavily discounted), and I don’t have to worry about how I am going to reach these locations.

Where to buy Dusseldorf card

The Dusseldorf Card  is a wonderful little card, purchased from the Tourism Office downtown or straight from their website. Once purchased, or printed, simply date it and it is activated. It is valid for 1-4 days (depending on purchase) and allows for free, unlimited public transit within the city limits. Since there is so much to see in Dusseldorf, and everything is spread out nicely throughout the city, this feature is particularly handy.

Dusseldorf things to do

The Aquazoo has finally reopened after 3 years of renovations! This building is an amazing mixture of Aquarium, Museum of the History of the Evolution of Biodiversity, and Animal Exhibition. It is also home to incredible creatures, like Penguins, Puffins, and Caimens.

It is extremely child-friendly, with elevator access and wide hallways for strollers and wheelchairs. The gift shop is more like a gift counter and there isn’t a restaurant or eating area but the neighboring NordPark  has plenty of open spaces, park benches, and coffee shops to keep the whole family happy after an hour or 2 exploring.

Looking for free things to do in Dusseldorf with kids? Check out this list of free things to do with the Dusseldorf card, as well as outdoor parks and event centers that can be enjoyed for free by all. NordPark | Aquazoo | Dusseldorf | Germany

(1-day family ticket costs 18 euro vs 1-day family Dusseldorf Card costs 18 euro)

Travel Tip – If exploring without the Dusseldorf Card or needing more tickets than your Card provides, it is best to purchase in advance. This will dramatically reduce your wait time, as the lines can get a little long during holidays and weekends. It did just open, after all.

he Filmmuseum Düsseldorf, located in the Old Town of North Rhine Westphalia’s state capital, was opened in 1993. This interactive museum gives an exciting access to the world of movies, spanning from its earliest beginnings to present day.

Its permanent exhibition (approx. 2,200m²) conveys a lively history of film and presents a selection of rare vintage film technology. Camera obscuras and laterna magicas from the 1880s, film projectors and cameras from early 20th century to present day, set models, stage design, props, and costumes can be marveled at. A replica film studio and a special effects section give an insight into actual movie making

GoetheMuseum

The Goethe Museum is a cultural-historical museum devoted to the greatest German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). It is funded by the Anton and Katharina Kippenberg Foundation and the City of Düsseldorf. The collection is based on what was at the time the largest private collection on Goethe and his time, acquired by the publisher Anton Kippenberg (1874-1950). It consists of manuscripts, books, art, arts and crafts, and a research library.

Deutsches Keramikmuseum

The Hetjens Museum was opened in 1909 as a municipal museum on the basis of the legacy of Laurenz Heinrich Hetjens (1830-1906). Hetjens, an industrialist and art collector, donated to the city, amongst others, a considerable collection of Rhenish stoneware, which formed the foundation of the present museum. Over the years, the collection was expanded through donations and selective purchases to present 8000 years of ceramics history.

Free things to do Dusseldorf

Media harbour.

The former Rhine harbour has undergone a drastic transformation: where silos and warehouses used to form the skyline of the harbour district, today, there are building complexes designed by nationally and internationally renowned architects. The MedienHafen (Media Harbour) is home to numerous companies, mainly from the fields of media and communication, fashion, and architecture, as well as art and culture. The harbour owes its special charm to the mix of “old and new”: the old quay walls, the steps and rail tracks of the old loading line have still been preserved and are classified as historical monuments.

Schloss Benrath Garden

While visits to the castle are only possible during guided tours, the Schloss Benrath gardens are free of charge and a definite sight to see. There are beautiful flowers, gardens, water features, mazes and rolling hills to keep everyone entertained.

Construction began in 1755 and was completed in 1770 and has been proposed for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Klemensvertel

A great little square full of local shops, restaurants, and bakeries. The clock chimes a beautiful tune every hour and the water fountain has enough bench space to park the whole family, and then some, to enjoy the sun, the ice cream, and people watch. Chase a few pigeons and let the kids burn off the sugar before moving on to your next stop.

Kaiserwerth Castle

Not far from Klemensvertel, otherwise known as Klemensplatz, and towards the Rhine River, is the beautiful Kaiserwerth Castle. It is only open from 9 am to 6  pm daily from April through October.

This castle was first built in the 10th century but later expanded in the 12th century by King Barbarossa. After its initial destruction, bricks were eventually taken from the castle to rebuild the city and it was left in ruin. Climb the castle carefully as the steps can be a little slippery when wet, but all windows and walls have sturdy railings to keep little ones from slipping away.

Opened for the first time in 1927, the enclosure covered only 10 hectares and housed dam and deer. In the war in 1944, the park was closed, expanded in 1952 to 30 hectares and reopened. Today, the enclosure is 40 acres and the animals themselves decide when to approach and show themselves.

The children can feed the animals various fruits and vegetables brought from home – signs will indicate if an animal is not allowed to eat something.

Travel tip ; Food for the animals are not provided on site, and there are no restaurants/cafes either. Pack a picnic and hit the grocery store up for some apples and carrots. During the summer months, there is an Ice Cream truck in the parking lot – bring change and be prepared for little ones to asking for a scoop. It’s amazing, don’t worry.

Classic Remise

The Classic Remise Düsseldorf, a center for vintage cars, can be found in a historic roundhouse for locomotives. There are garages, services, and dealers for classic cars, shops for spare parts, clothing, model cars, accessories and restaurants in this landmark building

Children and teens are welcome, but please watch your kids as these vehicles are available for sale and are worth much more than one would want to pay to repair any damages. There is a cafe inside the building if anyone needs a break from “shopping”.

The heart of the fashion district in Dusseldorf, Konigsalle is next to the Altstadt and easily accessible by public transit. You don’t have to have a fat wallet to enjoy this street; find a nice cafe (seeing a trend so far?) and people watch, or just enjoy the sights along the canal and beautiful architecture.

Rheinufepromenade

Take a walk along the promenade just passed the Altstadt, catch a few buskers playing and maybe ride the Ferris wheel is you plan on visiting after October 1.

Summer also houses many pop up markets, carnival parades and cartwheel contests for the kids.

Next to the Aquazoo, NordPark is a great place to take the kids for a quiet picnic. The centre of the park also has a few playgrounds to burn off any extra energy before continuing on to view more beautiful gardens.

Besides geometrically landscaped flowerbeds, the park also contains themed gardens like the lily garden, which has a pond surrounded by pillars that provide welcome shade in summer. Altogether, the Nordpark has 4000 square meters of ponds, fountains and water features. If you enter the Nordpark from the Kaiserswerther Straße, the view into the park is dominated by the water features in the 170-metre-long basin, and the subsequent large fountain further along this axis.

Guide to Dusseldorf's public transport

travel card dusseldorf

When you explore rental homes in Dusseldorf , one of the first things you’ll have to get a hang of is how to get from A to B. Luckily, the German public transport network is very efficient and easy to navigate. So once you know what Stadtbahn is and where to buy your tram tickets, getting around in Dusseldorf will be a piece of cake!

Public transport in Dusseldorf

travel card dusseldorf

All the public transport in Dusseldorf is run by Rheinbahn, making it easy to switch between the city railway (U-Bahn), suburban trains (S-Bahn), trams and buses with the same ticket.

“ Get familiar with the public transportation network in Dusseldorf with this interactive map . ”

In general, the working hours of public transport in Dusseldorf are between 9 a.m. and midnight . But that differs per line and the type of transport, so it’s best to check your connection in real-time on www.vrr.de or moovitapp .

Stadtbahn/ U-Bahn

Stadtbahn (city railway) is the fastest way to travel through Dusseldorf as it allows you to escape traffic jams altogether. It’s something in-between a tram and a metro, but only in the centre do the lines go underground.

You can recognise Stadtbahn stations by a large sign with a white U on a blue background and each of the 11 lines is identified by a number (U70 – U79, U83).

When travelling within the centre, you normally won’t wait for your train for longer than a few minutes. But as you go further towards the suburbs , the waiting time in the evenings or on weekends can increase up to 20 to 30 minutes between trains.

Note that not all lines operate daily and on schedule. U70 is restricted to rush hours only, while U77 doesn’t operate on Sundays and holidays and U83 remains closed on weekends.

Trams ( Straßenbahn or streetcars) will become your reliable companion in the centre of Dusseldorf. Each of the 7 lines is identified by numbers 701 and 704 through 709. They stop frequently throughout the route, making them perfect for short travel .

While not all the tram stops are easy to spot, you can often recognise them by the yellow sign with a green ‘H’ for Haltestelle . The tram stops are usually combined with the bus stops.

Buses are helpful when transferring between tram and U-Bahn lines or travelling to suburbs . The bus network in Dusseldorf is rather extensive but less so in the city centre, where it gives way to tram lines.

The frequency of buses is also much lower than trams, trains, or metro. It might take from 30 minutes to an hour between each bus. Buses are also less reliable when in a hurry as they’re sensitive to traffic and their service can be sporadic on weekends.

Night travel: NachtExpress

When most public transport comes to a halt, the night bus service NachtExpress can come to your rescue. Most of the NE lines operate only on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday nights between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m or only perform a single route on the rest of the days. But night owls and partygoers can rely on NE3 that goes between Düsseldorf Hbf and D-Oberrath daily from 1:06 a.m to 3:36 a.m.

S-Bahn is a so-called suburban train , travelling at faster speeds and with fewer stops compared to U-Bahn. It’s usually less convenient for very short travels within the city limits but can prove handy if you need a quicker way to travel between Düsseldorf’s neighbouhoods that are far from each other.

And if you need to travel to other cities in the Ruhr area and along the Rhine, S-Bahn is your best bet. You can easily reach Dortmund by S1 and Cologne by S11 without spending extra money on the high-speed ICE train.

Regional trains (RE, RB)

You can also travel to the nearby suburbs and cities like Cologne, Neuss or Essen by Regional Express (RE) and Regionalbahn (RB) trains. Operated by the national railway service Deutsche Bahn , these fast trains require different tickets than local transport. Make sure to buy those in advance as they don’t sell tickets onboard .

Long-distance travel by ICE

Would you like to explore the rest of Germany ? That’s easy and fast with the high-speed intercity trains (ICE). They take you to any part of the country or abroad in a blink of an eye. Travelling at the speed of 300 km/h , you’ll be in Berlin in 4.5 hours!

Just as with the regional trains, you’ve to buy a DB ticket in advance to travel with ICE trains.

Buying public transport tickets in Düsseldorf

Since Rheinbahn operates all public transport in Dusseldorf, you can buy bus, tram, metro or train tickets at any station via the vending machine . Or, when in a bus , directly from the driver .

While vending machines usually have an English language option, you might run into a language barrier when communicating with the driver.

“ We recommend that you save yourself the hassle and purchase tickets online via VRR app . ”

If you have a printed ticket , don’t forget to validate it in a yellow or red validator machine ( entwerter ) on the platform before boarding. Digital tickets can be activated in-app . For long-distance journeys in ICE, your tickets don’t need to be validated.

Rheinbahn price levels

In Dusseldorf, public transport tickets are priced based on the zone of travel . So, for example, when buying a ticket to travel within the city limits of Dusseldorf, you’ve to select the price level A3.

travel card dusseldorf

Rheinbahn offers various types of tickets . Let's look into some of them:

  • Short distance tickets ( Kurzstrecke ) are valid for maximum 3 rides within 20 minutes .
  • Single tickets ( EinzelTicket ) valid for 2 hours of travel in the same direction. So you can't use it for a return trip .
  • Happy hour ticket allows you travelling in the whole zone A freely between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. of the following morning.
  • 24-hour ticket is valid from the moment you purchase it until the local public transportation shuts down.
  • 30-day pass Ticket1000 can be used an unlimited number of times throughout a month.
  • 30-day pass Ticket1000 after 09:00 a.m. is the same as Ticket1000 but you can use it only after 9 a.m.
  • 30-day pass Ticket2000 same as the Ticket1000, but it allows you to take your bike onboard and you'd be able to lend it to other people . You can also take 1 passenger with you for free .

Rheinbahn price levels per ticket type:

“ Discover all types of public transport tickets in Düsseldorf . ”

Travel cards for students

Are you going to study in Germany ? Here’s some great news; you might be entitled to a so-called semester ticket . This ticket grants you free unlimited travel on all the local public transport. Most German universities provide semester tickets as part of paying a contribution fee to study at the university.

If your university in Düsseldorf doesn’t provide a semester ticket or you intend to do an internship or traineeship in Germany , you can purchase the YoungTicketPLUS ticket instead. You just need to fill in the subscription application , get it stamped by your educational institution, and hand it over to Rheinbahn.

“ How much does it cost to live in Dusseldorf? ”

Knowing your way around the city takes you a step closer to feeling like a local. Now that you know the ins and outs of public transportation in Düsseldorf, what will be your choice?

I have the following questions:

Q1. Does the DüsseldorfCard cover travel to Essen? I understand Cologne is under a different zone so not covered by the card.

Q2. Given our intended itinerary, would it be better for us to get the 24h card to cover just the first day or 48h (if it covers travel to Essen) or 72h for the entire duration in Düsseldorf?

' class=

Q1: No. The card only covers fare stage A3, which is strictly local transport in the city limits. On this map, that is effectively zones 43 and 53. The journey you want is fare stage C, which is €13 each way. There may be a small discount if you show your Düsseldorf Card at a DB Reisezentrum.

Q2: Bear in mind you may need local transport in Düsseldorf to get to/from the train station, or to a restaurant or whatever, and there are additional discounts over and above the transport offer. You'd need to do the maths to see if it works out for you.

Dear darrenmcc, thank you for the detailed reply.

As this will be a Christmas Market trip for us, we are intending to visit as many Christmas Markets as we can.

I will be starting another thread on Christmas Markets to get some information. Look forward to your assistance in the matter as well. :)

travel card dusseldorf

Hi Petra F, we were thinking of getting the card on day of arrival as it includes the train from the airport to city centre. It would cost Euro19.90 (24hr DüsseldorfCard) for the 2 of us to get from the airport and around the city for day 1.

Would it be cheaper if we get separate tickets instead?

You can buy a local day ticket (VRR Region 1 day pass, 24hours) for

- 7,30 EUR for a single person

- 10,90 EUR for 2 person

Dear Andreas

Thank you for the information. Definitely makes more sense to get the local day ticket for us.

I bought mine online and it was delivered as a PDF with a QR Code on it, should a ticket inspector have asked me for my ticket. There were two of us travelling together for 72 hours and we did use the discounts – 10% off at Lindt and free entrance to the Aquazoo made up the difference between the D-Card and buying transport passes.

So I might be spending some time in Düsseldorf soon - I've been looking on rheinbahn.de at the monthly travel passes/abos, which look like great value but I can't find a map with the different fare zones anywhere. Could anybody help out?

One more quick question - are there any neighbourhoods near the city centre that are particularly good to live in? Rent prices seem quite reasonable just about everywhere, so for me it might come down to what kind of character each area has.

' class=

For Düsseldorf itself you need a pass of the price level A3. Covers zones 43 and 53.

http://www.vrr.de/imperia/md/content/tickets/vrr_gesamtraum_allgemein_2015.pdf

With price level B you select one core zones and it covers the zones neighboring to this zone. With price level C you can select 2 adjacent core zones and it covers the zones neighboring to both. Plus a few exceptions.

Price level D are the zones grouped by the line in magenta on the above linked zone map.

Price level E are all zones shown.

Thank you! I have been searching for this map and this answer for weeks!
