Famous Gaia sculpture comes to Tewkesbury Abbey

Gaia returns to Gloucestershire in 2024, as Tewkesbury Abbey hosts the spectacular seven-metre art installation, created by renowned artist Luke Jerram, in February — for a chance to see planet Earth as it appears in space.

gaia sculpture tour

Gloucestershire residents have another chance to see Luke Jerram's acclaimed Gaia sculpture in the county, as the seven-metre replica of planet Earth comes to Tewkesbury Abbey in February 2024.

Back in Gloucestershire after touring the globe, with a residency at Gloucester Cathedral in October 2020, visitors can see the striking artwork in place from Friday 2 to Tuesday 20 February 2024, to get a new perspective of our planet.

Hosted by the abbey in partnership with Tewkesbury Culture's Two Rivers Converge Festival, Gaia is a spectacular sight in the evening.

Internally lit as the building is cast in shadows, suspended from the building's medieval nave, it gives spectators a profound sense of what it might be like to see the Earth from space.

Gaia is accompanied by a specially made surround sound composition, providing an immersive experience  and chance to feel the 'Overview Effect' — a unique phenomenon commonly experienced by astronauts, described as a feeling of awe for the planet, an appreciation for the interconnection of life and a renewed sense of responsibility for looking after the environment.

Tewkesbury Abbey is also hosting relaxed viewings for visitors with dementia and SEN on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 15 February at 4pm.

Reverand Canon Nick Davies, vicar of Tewkesbury Abbey, said: 'We're really excited to be hosting Gaia. We live on a fragile planet facing a climate emergency. I hope that this event will give tens of thousands of people the opportunity to wonder at the beauty of the Earth.

'Floating in the Abbey, this globe offers us a new perspective on our planet and might help us to see it as a sacred place.'

Tickets to see Gaia in the evening are available from The Roses Theatre box office and can be booked via the website.

Tewkesbury Abbey is also free to visit the daytime, open from 9am to 4pm and Gaia can be seen during this time, too. Please note, the abbey is closed from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 February 2024.

Gaia at Tewkesbury Abbey

Friday 2 to Sunday 11 February 2024; Thursday 15 to Tuesday 20 February 2024

Evening slots are available from 4pm to 7.15pm

Tickets to see Gaia in the evening cost £8 for adults and £6 for children aged three to 16

Bath Abbey

Gaia & Treasuring Creation Festival

Large scale model of the Earth with people stood in front

Gaia represents this wonderful earth which Christians believe is a gift of God who calls us to be good stewards in co-operation with him and one another. In the breathtaking setting of the Abbey, the Treasuring Creation Festival will provide many and varied opportunities for celebration and for learning how we can better work together.”

- Revd Stephen Girling, Abbey Missioner and Chair of Bath Abbeys’ Eco Group

Gaia  By Luke Jerram

18 th September - 29 th October 2023

Bath Abbey is hosting Luke Jerram’s touring Gaia artwork as part of the Treasuring Creation Festival . Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface and provides the opportunity to see our planet floating in three-dimensions.

Gaia will be suspended underneath the tower in the centre of the Abbey, providing an awe-inspiring view as people enter the building. The artwork was previously on display at Wells Cathedral.

Gaia creates a sense of the Overview Effect , which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface.

A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones will be played alongside the sculpture. In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth.

Gaia is only available to see during Abbey opening times . As an active working church in the community, at times the Abbey is closed for visiting. Please check before you visit for last minute variations.

gaia sculpture tour

On view July 19–August 14

Join us for Gaia , a touring installation by UK artist Luke Jerram, July 19–August 14 .

Gaia is an internally-lit sculpture of the Earth featuring imagery from NASA’s Visible Earth project. At 23 feet in diameter, it presents the Earth at a scale 1.8 million times smaller than its real size. The work includes a surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Jones.

The installation evokes the overview effect, a shift in awareness experienced by some astronauts during space flight. It’s an experience of awe, interconnection, and renewed responsibility to care for the planet.

We have extended hours! We’ll be open all day on Thursdays, 10 am–10 pm, throughout Gaia ’s run!

About the artist

Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations, and live arts projects. Special Planetarium Show

An artistic depiction of the earth with a large city next to the arctic and the text, "Atlas of a Changing Earth"

The University of Minnesota’s Polar Geospatial Center is featured in this stunning film visualizing the processes affecting our warming planet. Using latest-generation imagery from space, “Atlas of a Changing Earth” takes viewers into the dynamics causing coastal glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica to melt, and explores how rising seas could threaten coastlines the world over. These striking new images are produced by the confluence of satellites and supercomputers, revealing Earth in a degree of precise detail scarcely imagined a generation ago.

Our Planet Earth – Gaia

Mother holding small child, looking up at Gaia, Life Science Centre's huge replica of Planet Earth.

Wonder at Gaia - a mesmerising, seven-metre-diameter recreation of Planet Earth.

Gaia, created by British artist Luke Jerram, is a mesmerising seven metre diameter installation of planet earth. It features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface and has impressed audiences across the globe from as far afield as London, Hong Kong and Australia.

The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface. By standing 211m away from the artwork, you can see the Earth as it appears from the moon!

This permanent installation aims to create a sense of the Overview Effect. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

The Giant Illuminated Model Of The Floating Earth Has Just Returned To London

Luke Jerram’s masterful floating Earth model, ‘Gaia’, has returned to London for a stint at Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington.

Jack Saddler

You know how someone can promise you the world and not deliver? That’s the complete opposite of what’s happening here. Kind of.

Luke Jerram’s giant floating model of the Earth – known as ‘ Gaia ’ – has returned to London, having enjoyed several popular stints in the past. Featuring a soundtrack by BAFTA award-winning composer, Dan Jones and high-res NASA imagery , it’s no wonder that crowds have been tilting towards this spectacle.

a floating earth model being reflected off the shiny floor of an ornate gilded room

After conquering the knolls of Kensington , the waters of Canary Wharf , and the grand Painted Hall in Greenwich , where is the latest checkpoint for the planet ? I hear you ask. The floating earth has returned to the south-westerly part of London, to go for a spin in Teddington .

Where can I find Gaia?

Running until July 2 at the Landmark Arts Centre , Gaia has set up shop as part of the Richmond Arts & Ideas Festival. Yes, you will have to venture beyond your Zone 4 comfort zone , but in doing so you’ll be able to see the whole world. And everyone has to journey to the outer reaches of London at some point in their lives.

Gaia measures seven metres in diameter , and you’ll find it suspended in mid-air in the Landmark Arts Centre. It’s the optimum station for a moment of tranquillity (or a snap for the ‘Gram). Visitors can gaze at the planet just as the stars and comets would, with Gaia aiming to provide a sense of renewed responsibility for taking care of the Earth.

This time around, Gaia will be on hand for late-night viewings , concerts, yoga classes, kids’ activities & school visits, specialist talks, and more.

Gaia by Luke Jerram (read more about his work here !) – who is also known for his spacey Museum Of The Moon sculpture – has been on a non-stop tour around the world. It’s travelled the world from Romania to Minnesota and currently has more dates scheduled in Ontario, Germany, and Hungary, among others. You can read all about the movements of the floating earth here .

Find Gaia, Luke Jerram’s magnificent floating Earth model, at Landmark Arts Centre (Ferry Road, Teddington TW11 9NN) from June 16 – July 2, 2023 . You can find more information about Richmond Arts & Ideas Festival here .

Gaia by Luke Jerram

Our display of Gaia ended on 4 September 2019. For details of our current exhibitions, take a look at our  what’s on page .

We displayed Luke Jerram’s spectacular artwork Gaia , a detailed sculpture of Earth measuring seven metres in diameter.

We have gazed up at the Moon for millennia, but the first time humankind got to see the Earth in its entirety—as a ‘Blue Marble’ floating in space—was in 1972 with NASA’s Apollo 17 mission. Our perception and understanding of our planet changed forever. Hanging in the black emptiness of space, the Earth seems isolated, precious and fragile.

Gaia , a touring artwork by Luke Jerram, is a stunning replica of our planet, created using 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The sculpture provides an incredible opportunity to view Earth as it might be seen from space, floating in three dimensions.

Looking up at Gaia , some have experienced the ‘overview effect’. Author Frank White coined the term in 1987 to describe the cognitive shift experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from space. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

A specially made composition by BAFTA Award-winning composer Dan Jones was played alongside the sculpture.

A must see experience.

Step into the magnificent Marble Saloon of Stowe House and take in the spectacle of the universe. Designed to imitate the Pantheon of Rome, statues adorn the room, and light pours in from the majestic domed oculus to highlight a Roman triumphal procession carved into a frieze depicting 280 humans and 14 animals. It’s the perfect space to display the three-dimensional, six-metre floating sculpture of Gaia by internationally acclaimed artist, Luke Jerram.

Visitors will be able to enjoy timed entry to the eighteenth-century historic house, allowing plenty of space to explore this multi-sensory experience and soak up the atmosphere – even being encouraged to lay on the floor to encounter Earth’s surface as it would be viewed from space using detailed NASA imagery.

The installation creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

Take a closer look at Gaia

Artist, luke jerram.

The artwork also acts as a mirror to major events in society, the artwork may provide the viewer with a new perspective of our place on the planet; a sense that societies of the Earth are all interconnected and that we have a responsibility toward one another.

Working in partnership with Stowe School, students will be exploring the environment and the impact of climate change. Workshops and talks will be given inspired by having Gaia – and the opportunity to see our planet as never before.

The artwork is named after mother nature. In Greek mythology, Gaia is the personification of the earth and the ancestral mother of all life. This installation is the sister sculpture to Jerram’s previous work, Museum of the Moon, which has now been seen by over 3 million people in more than 25 countries.

For those who enjoy gazing into the galaxy, the house offers additional astronomical delights. In the Marble Saloon stands the statue of Venus – The Romans once believed the planet to be the brightest star – and Urania goddess of astronomy who watched over the movement of the planets and stars. Meanwhile in the North Hall, amongst the dazzling gold decoration of the ceiling visitors can spot star signs and gods such as Mars, Saturn and Jupiter to name a few.

Take time to search out astronomical stories in the ceiling decoration of the North Hall

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

gaia sculpture tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. Theodor Tezhik

The big kremlin’s wind.

Theodor Tezhik was born in Elektrostal (Russia) in 1946 and lives in Prague. In 1989 he was the first Russian to paint on the Berlin Wall. His painting “The Big Kremlin’s Wind” shows the soviet president Gorbachev flying into a crowd of people above the Kremlin in Moscow. The painting addresses the role the Kremlin played in the fall of the Wall.

The artist completed his colourful work “The Big Kremlin’s Wind” in only two days. It depicts a blustery storm whirling people into the air and causing the towers of the Kremlin in Moscow to bend. The later Russian president Mikhail Gorbachev is shown hanging upside down in the air. The phrase “Tempus fugit” (“Time flees”) along the upper edge is a reminder of the role the Kremlin played in the fall of the Wall and of how suddenly the political circumstances can change – as shown at the time in both East Germany and the then Soviet Union.

Tezhik graduated from the Moscow College of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in 1970 and worked as a set designer for theatre and film. He became known for his fantastical set sculptures and inventive use of visual metaphors. He has also produced music videos for bands and acclaimed stage productions as artist-in-chief of the International Theatre Olympics in Moscow as well as author and director of various plays for the festival.
