Wine Tours and Excursions in New York State

Credit: @caicedojp on instagram.

One way to see the diverse landscapes of New York State is by visiting its wineries. Some are nestled into sloping lakeshores while others are tucked into the woods, or part of a scenic rural vista. How to visit varies, too. Depending on the experience, you may take a bus tour or limousine service or even a bicycle or boat. Or perhaps you’ll sip wine on a train, watching the countryside pass you by. Decide what you want your wine experience to look like and start planning now.

Masks are encouraged, but optional in most settings per New York State guidelines . Individual businesses or attractions may require mask wearing. Call ahead and check websites and social media to make sure attractions and amenities are open and available.

Captain Jim’s Wine Cruises (Finger Lakes)

Finger Lakes wineries are famously scenic but there’s something extra special about arriving by boat. Make the most of your trip with Captain Jim’s Wine Cruises, where you’ll take a leisurely pontoon boat ride on beautiful Cayuga Lake while Captain Jim describes points of interest along the way.

You can choose to visit three of the following wineries: Sheldrake Point Winery , Long Point Winery , Thirsty Owl Wine Company (which has a bistro perfect for lunch), or Goose Watch Winery . You’ll have about an hour at each stop, giving you ample time to eat, sample wines, and stroll around the picturesque vineyards.

Captain Jim’s Wine Cruises take place Thursday-Monday and last from 1:00pm to 5:30pm. The 2023 cruise season kicks off May 14. Each cruise is limited to six passengers.

East End Bike Tours (Long Island)

Pedal your way through Long Island’s idyllic wine country, stopping to spot wildlife, take in harbor views, and of course sample plenty of North Fork vino. East End Bike Tours offers a range of experiences. Their fleet includes single-rider or tandem bicycles and tours range from 13.5 to 18 miles long. Depending on the tour, you may also stop to pick fresh fruit, browse in local boutiques, or check out some craft breweries.

Tours include a guide, unlimited non-alcoholic refreshments, olive oil and vinegar tastings, and a support vehicle to carry whatever you may buy along the way. Private and self-guided tours are also available, as are limousine tours for those who prefer not to ride bicycles. Tours run from May through October.

The Little Wine Bus (Hudson Valley/New York City)

Credit: @deep2105 on instagram.

The Little Wine Bus takes care of every little detail so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride through Hudson Valley’s Wine Country . The company will be starting up their public tours from New York City in the fall with their famous singing karaoke bus from Times Square and also offers private tours. Maybe you want to woo your sweetheart with a day of romance, celebrate a milestone birthday with everyone you ever knew, or host a corporate event. Either way, The Little Wine Bus has you covered. Their fleet of vehicles accommodates anywhere from two to 56 passengers. Once you know your group size, they’ll work with you to build your perfect itinerary, whether you want an educational outing, a party scene, or something in between.

Owner Tania Dougherty is a Hudson Valley local, a Certified Travel Counselor, and Certified Meeting Professional, credentials that assure customers will have the most seamless experience. A vehicle will pick up your group at your home, hotel, or rental in the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, or any of the five boroughs in New York City. Tour prices include food, wine tastings, bus driver, host, and gratuities. Private tours are available seven days per week all year long. The Little Wine Bus also hosts weekday corporate tours to Long Island’s wine country.

Spa City Brew Bus (Capital-Saratoga)

Credit: @fossilstonefarms on instagram.

Assemble your crew and climb aboard for a day of fun among friends. The Spa City Brew Bus seats up to 24 passengers with a minimum of 12 required. Tours are private so you and your group have the bus to yourselves and can set the tone, whether you want some calming background music for the ride or want to rev up the party with a round of karaoke. You’ll work with the Brew Bus folks to arrange pick-up time, location, and desired destinations. Tours typically last four hours (additional time can be added for a fee) and visit wineries (or distilleries and breweries) in the Capital-Saratoga region. In addition to a professional driver, you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who’ll regale you with music, games, raffles, snacks, and water.

Pair Wine Tours (New York City)

Credit: @pairwinetours on instagram.

You’ll want to take notes on this one. Led by a sommelier, this neighborhood walking wine tour educates participants on wine tasting techniques, food and wine pairings, label reading, and top wine producing regions. You’ll also learn how to open a bottle of vino like a pro so you can impress your friends at your next dinner party! Each tour includes stops at one wine shop and two restaurants. You’ll sample two wines at each stop, with snacks served at the restaurants. New York City tours are available in Hell’s Kitchen and the Lower East Side. Tours conclude at local wine shops, where, in addition to sampling wine, guests can purchase bottles at a discounted price.

If your walking tour whets your appetite for more wine tasting in NYC, head to City Winery . The wine-tasting, dining, and live performance space at Pier 57 is the largest winery in New York City. Sample in-house wines in their tasting room, grab some dinner, catch a concert, or simply sip a glass of wine and watch the sun go down over the Hudson River. City Winery hosts regular dining and wine tasting events and they plan to resume their winery tours once it’s safe to do so.

Amore di Vino Tours (Greater Niagara)

Honeymoon Trail Winery in Lockport, NY.

A chauffeured limousine lets your group travel in style as you tour the wineries in this astonishingly beautiful region. Amore di Vino offers several themed tours. Amenities vary but tours typically include stops at five wineries, wine tastings, a wine specialist, and a complimentary gift for everyone. Themed options include the Chocolate Lovers tour, which concludes with a heaping tray of mouthwatering desserts, and Fun With Friends, where each guest goes home with a hand-painted wine glass. Itineraries can also be completely customized to suit your wishes. All tours make stops along the Niagara Wine Trail and Niagara Wine Country . The region’s cool climate creates a favorable grape growing season, which in turn allows wineries to excel in the production of wines like Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Vidal Blanc. And you can’t beat the scenery, with some wineries set on the scenic shores of Lake Ontario and others just a short drive from Niagara Falls .

DIY Wine-themed Road Trip (Catskills/Hudson Valley)

Bashakill Vineyards in the Catskills.

This wine-themed road trip will take you into the heart of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley, and through adorable mountain towns like Phoenicia, Mount Tremper, and Ellenville. It’s a drive that allows you to explore the area’s scenic byways and attractions entirely at your own pace.

Kick off your trip at The Vineyard at Windham in the northern Catskills. Their four-acre property offers views overlooking Windham Mountain . The cozy tasting room is outfitted with plenty of windows so you don’t miss a moment of those views. While you’re basking in the scenery, sip on their merlot, Riesling, or rosé, or try a wine they’ve sourced from within New York State.

Next, put on some good driving tunes and head south through the Hudson Valley to Christopher Jacobs Winery at Pennings Vineyard . Sample their award-winning wines while enjoying fresh air and mountain views. June marks the start of their Summer Live Music Series every Friday from 4:00pm-sunset.

You’ll swing back into the Catskills on your next and last stop at the adults-only, dog-friendly Bashakill Vineyards . Their wines are vegan, made by hand, and organic or low-spray, and they specialize in wines aged in French and American oak barrels. You’ll remember you’re in the wilds of the Catskills with wine names like Red Fox, Coyote, and Black Bear. You’ll probably be ready for dinner by this time and can sample bites from Bashakill's rotating menu of fresh ingredients.

Lake Erie Wine Country (Chautauqua-Allegheny)

Courtesy of johnson estate winery.

More than 20 wineries spread across 53 miles of Lake Erie’s south shore make up the wine country here, giving road-tripping wine lovers miles of picturesque scenery. Visitors looking to carve out their own wine trail vacation will find a great resource in the Lake Erie Wine Country website . There’s information on transportation services, accommodations, restaurants, and of course, which wineries suit you and your group the best. The website helps users narrow down choices for easier planning. Looking for a winery where you can also grab a bite to eat? Add 21 Brix Winery to your itinerary. If you have a beer-drinker among you, head to Five & 20 Spirits/Mazza Chautauqua Cellars . If your pup is your travel partner, there’s a list of pet-friendly wineries, too. There are also recommendations on area attractions like the National Comedy Center and Panama Rocks Scenic Park to round out your trip to the region.

Adirondack Craft Beverage Trail (Adirondacks)

You don’t need a special excuse to visit Lake George but making the wineries on the Adirondack Craft Beverage Trail into a short road trip certainly gives you one. Adirondack Winery is located in the heart of Lake George Village , a lively local spot that’s usually offering one drink special or another in celebration of a holiday or local event. A second location in Queensbury includes a winemaking facility, brand new tasting room, and a space for live events. Adirondack Winery creates inventive blends like a lavender infused rosé and a blueberry infused red, as well as a wide selection of red, white, and sparkling wines.

The next and last wine destination on the Adirondack Craft Beverage trail is Ledge Rock Hill Winery & Vineyard , a family-run business with an Adirondack-style tasting room in a woodsy setting. Featured wines include Cranberry Blanc, Traminette, and Melody, a dry citrus white made from a grape of the same name. Ledge Rock Hill Winery & Vineyard often holds live music events.

Take a Wine Cruise with Coyote Moon Vineyards (Thousand Islands)

Courtesy of taste 1000 islands .

Take a relaxing two-hour cruise with an experienced crew and Coyote Moon Vineyards. All cruises include one bottle of Coyote Moon wine per person and a cheese and cracker snack box. Plan to arrive at least one hour before departure, at which time you’ll take part in a wine tasting and select the bottle you’d like to take aboard. The cruise takes passengers on a relaxing ride through the scenic Thousand Islands. Large groups can book their own private wine cruise. The cruise season with Coyote Moon Vineyards runs from the end of June through early September.

Ride the Adirondack Railroad Beer & Wine Train (Central New York)

Adirondack Railroad train pulling into the station.

All aboard the Beer & Wine Train , an excursion that departs from Utica’s Union Station, a historic Beaux Arts building with marble pillars and a 35-foot tall barrel-vaulted ceiling. On board, passengers receive a complimentary glass. A selection of beer and wine is available for purchase. The train travels 20 miles north through the countryside and arrives at The Remsen Depot, where passengers will have 30 minutes to stretch their legs and browse in the gift shop before returning to Utica. First class and coach class tickets are available. Light snacks are served to all; first class passengers receive hors d’oeuvres. The Adirondack Beer & Wine Train offers trips in the spring, summer, and fall.

Duck Walk Vineyards

By far our most requested and most popular vineyard stop. Duck Walk Vineyards is one of the most well known names in quality wine on Long Island, NY. Encompassing 140 scenic acres and producing some 5,000 cases of awarding-winning wine each year, Duck Walk Vineyards has become a staple on one of the most famed growing regions in the country. From Vidal Ice Wine made with grapes actually frozen on the vine, to the renowned Blueberry Port crafted from wild Maine blueberries, their wines are crafted to be distinctive and exceptional.

Pindar Vineyards

Another one of our absolute favorites, and one of Long Island's most popular vineyard destinations! Pindar Vineyards encompasses more than 500 scenic acres. They grow 17 varieties of grapes, crafting them into some 23 varietals and proprietary blends. Pindar produces 70,000 cases of wine a year, making them the largest vineyard on Long Island! But at heart, they are still a family business with a personal touch in every aspect of the process. Pindar also puts an emphasis on striving to create more impactful wines with less impact on the environment.

Hawk Ridge Winery (CT)

One of our popular non-Long Island destinations. Hawk Ridge Winery, part of Hidden Breeze Farm, is located in Watertown, Connecticut, a peaceful farm setting, in which to enjoy friends, family, and fantastic wine. Hidden Breeze Farm has been in existence since January, 2012. They decided to name our winery after the abundance of red tail hawks on the property. Hawk Ridge is dog friendly on the lawn and in the tent area. You may bring your own food it just can’t be serving style/in serving trays/or from an outside caterer. Ideal destination for tours leaving from New Jersey.

Long Island Spirits

A great vineyard alternative to add some diversity to your tour! Long Island Spirits was established in 2007 as the first distillery on Long Island since the 1800's and became the 100th Distillery in the United States of America. Surrounded by centuries old of potato, corn and rye farms, the distillery is located on the bucolic North Fork of Long Island, in the heart of the acclaimed wine region. Long Island Spirits is proud of its sustainable distillery practices and the innovative fermenting, distilling and blending techniques it has pioneered.

Jason's Vineyard

Jason’s Vineyard was planted in 1996 using only the finest clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Jason's Vineyard also purchases the grape varietals of Sauvignon Blanc, Seyvel Blanc, Cayuga and Riesling. Jason's pioneered the dense spacing of vines on the North Fork. This technique, not seen prior to Jason's Vineyard, is more closely planted than many other local vineyards. The six feet between rows and three feet between adjacent vines are Bordeaux measurements. A lovely and relaxing vineyard destination.

Jamesport Vineyards

Jamesport Vineyards is a father-son collaboration that began in 1986 making it one of the North Fork’s oldest vineyards. The tasting room has increased to accommodate an ever growing number of visitors. The great lawn out back provides the perfect setting for the Jamesport weekends where people gather to enjoy great wine, light fare and summer jazz concerts. Other event spaces throughout the property provide the perfect setting for weddings, private parties and small gatherings. A fun and lively vineyard destination!

The 24 Best Wineries and Vineyards Near NYC That Are Well Worth the Trip

Author image: purewow author

The West Coast may get the lion’s share of the glory when it comes to America’s wine regions but guess what: the East Coast (especially the Tri-State Area) can more than hold its own when it comes to vino . In fact, New York State alone has a long history of wine production and is even home to America’s oldest winery. From Finger Lakes to Cape May to New Haven, there are plenty of gorgeous vineyards to see and outstanding wines to try just a stone's throw away from the city. So the next time you’re in the mood to tour and taste grapes of the fermented variety, forget the pricey trip to Napa and instead head to one of these 24 wineries and vineyards near NYC. Cheers!

THE 41 BEST ROOFTOP BARS IN NYC TO HANG OUT ON FROM NOW UNTIL SEPTEMBER

New York Wineries and Vineyards

1. brotherhood winery.

  • Why We Love It: live music series; wide selection of reds, whites, rosé, sparkling and sangria
  • Distance from NYC: About 1 hour and 15 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed: Yes with a limit of four guests when booking

We’d like to take a moment to thank visionary Jean Jaques, who bought land in 1810 and began planting grapes. By 1839, he had fermented the very first wine vintage in America. While many more wineries have popped up since, the Brotherhood is still a must for wine lovers. Check out their hand-excavated underground cellars, try out five of their popular wines and even enjoy live performances every weekend.

100 Brotherhood Plaza Dr., Washingtonville, NY

2. Standing Stone Wines

  • Why We Love It: overlooks Seneca Lake, known for Gewürztraminer variety, cultivates lesser-known varietals
  • Distance from NYC: About 4 hours and 40 minutes by car

If you're in the Finger Lakes area (specifically Seneca Lake) for weekend getaway, head over to Standing Stone Wines. Reserve a table and try their extensive wine list while learning all about the production that dates back to the '70s.And while you're enjoying a nice glass, take in the gorgeous view of the vineyard that expands over 46 acres and overlooks the lake.

9934 Rte. 414, Hector, NY

3. Hudson-Chatham Winery

  • Why We Love It: curated tasting experiences, good for groups, walk-ins welcome
  • Distance from NYC: About 2 hours and 35 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed: Yes (but parties over six guests need to be booked via phone)

This Hudson Valley mainstay’s list of accolades is too long to get into here, but trust us, you’ll love the wine as much as you love the sun-drenched tasting room.Since it was originally a dairy farm, don't be afraid to pair your wine with the in-house line of artisanal cheeses, jams and sauces, made in collaboration with local farmers. (Blood-orange cheese drizzle, where have you been all our lives?)

1900 State Rte. 66, Ghent, NY

4. Bashakill Vineyards

  • Why We Love It: live music, food and drinks on the weekend; walk-ins welcome (no reservations); adults-only; try three or six wines free for the price of a $12 souvenir glass

Looking for a fun thing to do this weekend? Visit Bashakill Vineyards. Whether you're there for the wine tasting (try three drinks for free and get a souvenir glass for $12) or the food (the seasonal and homemade dishes from the on-site chef are exceptional), or just looking to getaway from the bustling city, here's a full experience worth exploring. 5. Benmarl Winery

  • Why We Love It: summer sangria festival, annual barrel tasting, takes reservations
  • Distance from NYC: 1 hour and 50 minutes by car Reservation needed: Yes

Known as the oldest vineyard in America, Benmarl Winery continues to be a staple in Malboro. Grab a tour, sip some of their wines and take in the views of their 37-acre state with an impressive shot of the Hudson River Valley. And if you're lucky, they just might be making some pizza in their wood fired oven (so call ahead to find out).

  • Distance from NYC:  2 hour and 30 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes (but walk-ins are allowed for wine tastings on a first come, first serve basis)

Owner John Dyson’s interest in wine started when he tried to impress a date with a jug of the stuff and enrolled in a wine course, but then grew to a full-fledge winery for everyone to enjoy. Since 1998, you can enjoy outdoor and indoor guided wine tastings, tours of 30 acres and relaxing in the picnic area (or terrace seating) overlooking the Catskills Mountains. Plus, if you're stopping by on Fridays, enjoy Friday Night Food Trucks, where you can enjoy local food, tap wine and fun lawn games for the whole family.

26 Wing Rd, Millbrook, NY

7. Rooftop Reds

  • Why We Love It: seasonal pizza and wine movie nights, rooftop views, offsite tastings available
  • Distance from NYC:  40 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes

While we have a few notable wineries in the city, the so-called concrete jungle isn’t exactly conducive to a proper vineyard. Fortunately, the Rooftop Reds founders were up for the challenge, opening the world’s first commercially viable rooftop vineyard inside the Brooklyn Navy Yard (and trust us, the space has a lot to offer). Grab your friends and enjoy a glass while taking in the views of the bustling city, or for a more hands-on experience, join a wine tasting, participate in one of their nightly yoga classes or catch a movie overlooking the Empire State building.

299 Sands St. Bldg. 275, Brooklyn, NY

8. Croteaux Vineyards

  • Why We Love It: specializes in rosé, tasting garden, Condé Nast Traveler favorite
  • Distance from NYC:  3 hours and 15 minutes by car

This Instagram-perfect vineyard, with its charming cobblestoned back patio and intricately designed bottles, can appropriately be summed up in a certain three-word hashtag:#roséallday. It’s the only vineyard in America dedicated exclusively to the pink stuff (and we're here for it). During the spring and summer, the tasting garden is particularly breathtaking as you're surrounded by a colorful and vibrant backdrop.

1450 S. Harbor Rd., Southold, NY

9. Wölffer Estate

  • Why We Love It: cider, spirits and non-alcoholic beverages available, seasonal Yoga in the Vines events
  • Distance from NYC:  3 hours and 10 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes with a limit of eight guests when booking

Head over to the Hamptons to this 30-year estate where you can try wine, spirits and ciders. They offer four unique experiences that feature the tasting room, a tour and so much more. For example, the Taste of the Season lets you try different wines with a few festive bites by their in-house chefs. A wine expert will guide you through the tasting while teaching you the ways their award-winning drinks have been made. And if you want to skip the tour and tasting, come by for Sunset Fridays and Saturdays where no reservations are needed. Just order a glass of wine, grab a bite and enjoy live music.

139 Sagg Rd., Sagaponack, NY

10. Bedell Cellars

  • Why We Love It: walk-ins welcome, great for groups up to 15 people, sustainable farming commitment, Wine Spectator calls it a “grand vin” of New York
  • Distance from NYC:  3 hours by car
  • Reservation needed:  No

This family-run winery owes its high-quality wines to sustainable farming methods and a small-batch process. While you won’t want to leave the sunny outdoor pavilion, we insist you step inside the restored barn to peep the owner’s contemporary art collection. And if you're stopping by on a Sunday enjoy live music from local artists.

36225 Main Rd., Cutchogue, NY

11. Warwick Valley Winery

  • Why We Love It: seasonal weekend live music, also offer ciders and spirits, on-site café with seasonal offerings
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 55 minutes by car

The Hudson Valley is home to many wineries and vineyards but nothing beats Warwick Valley Winery. They started out growing apples, and have grown to providing wines, spirits and ciders (including New York's Original Cider). While you're browsing through their impressive drink collection, enjoy food straight from local farmers (like oven-ready pizza). And you can experience the winery all year long with apple-picking in the fall and musical festivals (including tribute concerts) in their outdoor stage in the summer.

114 Little York Rd, Warwick, NY

12. Macari Vineyards

  • Why We Love It: wine bar, memberships available, seasonal events
  • Distance from NYC:  2 hour and 40 minutes by car

This family-owned vineyard is a Long Island gem. Pick one of the experiences they offer to learn all about their wines while exploring the 500-acre space. Check out the Summer Tasting, where you can sample three wines, a cheese selection and a personal charcuterie board for each guest.

New Jersey Wineries and Vineyards

13. willow creek farm & winery.

  • Why We Love It: open year-round, full grill and charcuterie menu

Cape May is already a hot spot for beaches, resorts and entertainment. It's no surprise they have a farm and winery to add to the list of fun things to do. Indulge in their group wine tasting (exploring five favorites), a tour via an electric cart to learn about the 50-acre farm or stop by Fire Pit Fridays for drinks, farm-fresh food and live music.

160-168 Stevens St., West Cape May, NJ

14. Old York Cellars

  • Why We Love It: wine and comedy shows, food pairing experiences, pet-friendly
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 15 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes but limited to six guests when booking

Just an hour away from the city, Old York Cellars has all the activities you're looking for in a winery. Enjoy a nice glass of wine in a cabana or reserve your spot in the open acres with the family. If you're looking to enhance your wine tasting skills, add in the Wine, Charcuterie & Chocolate experience where you can pair award-winning wine with meats, cheeses and delicious chocolate truffles. Or, choose the Chef Jose's Wine and Tapas Experience where you try some wine and fresh Spanish tapas (because wine pairs well with more than just meat and cheese).

  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 10 minutes by car
  • Reservation needed:  Yes but open to walk-ins on a limited basis

This NJ vineyard is where you'll find the finest wines in the state, but it’s really the events that have us trekking away from the Big Apple. Every weekend, join "Group Therapy" where there are live performances, local food trucks and fun lawn games. Whether you're relaxing on the lawn or want a peaceful moment with your wine at their crush pad, the whole fam can join a weekend of bliss.

  • Why We Love It: specialties include white Port-style wine, Méthode Champenoise Brut and Méthode Ancestrale sparkling wines; seasonal live music and food events
  • Distance from NYC:  2 hours and 35 minutes by car

There's always something fun happening at the Hawk Haven Vineyard. Since opening its doors in 2008, it has delivered a variety wines and activities, plus a healthy dose of local pride. Daily you'll find an event for the wine lover, foodie or music aficionado. In particular, The Rootstock concert series bridges all those together every weekend with local musicians, ever-changing food trucks (and their priceless wines of course) and exclusively to adults only (so leave the kiddos at home). But if you're looking to mellow out reserve a spot to learn all about the vineyard, wine selection and local farm.

600 South Railroad Avenue, Rio Grande, NJ

17. Tomasello Winery

  • Why We Love It: 10 locations throughout the state, opera galas, seasonal events
  • Distance from NYC:  45 minutes by car

FYI, this is not your average winery. Yes, you can head to the Hammonton area to check out their vineyard but why limit yourself to one spot in the Garden State? If you’re interested in trying one of their 50+ wines, their tasting room is scattered across ten locations in the state. Once you head over to one, there you can choose from their signature (which has five samplings) or Riedel (which has eight samplings and a souvenir glass) tastings. How would it be visit all ten, we wonder?

new york vineyards: laurita winery

18. Laurita Winery

  • Why We Love It: food truck season pass available, seasonal food and entertainment events
  • Distance from NYC:  1 hour and 30 minutes by car

Come for the wine (and their signature sangria) and stay for all the fun events happening on the weekends. On Fridays, stop by for Fridays at the Grove, order from Laurita's Eats (we’re fans of the turkey club or steak melt) and hang out for a while. Or show off your cornhole skills at a friendly competition game where you can win big prizes (like a $200 cash card). And if you're in a dancing mood, grab tickets to an 80s-themed dance party because why not?

  • Distance from NYC:  2 hours and 20 minutes by car

The award-winning winery (with 440 awards) is a must-see spot in Guilford area. Why? For its wide selection of wine and hard ciders. You don't have to wait until the weekend to try a wine tasting (so, wine Wednesday anyone?). Take in a tour or finish off with a look at the Bishop's Orchards Farm. There you'll find a market, homemade ice cream and a chance to pick some blueberries and peaches.

22. Hopkin’s Vineyard

  • Why We Love It: wine bar; specializes in dry, semi-sweet, sweet and sparkling wines; seasonal live music
  • Distance from NYC:  2 hours and 10 minutes by car

For over 225 years, the Hopkin's family has turned this vineyard into a Connecticut staple. Explore all the wine selections (in the state's first established wine bar) and admire the 19th century aesthetic. When you're finished learning about ingredients and the best food pairings, make time to view Lake Waramaug in the background.

25 Hopkins Rd., New Preston, CT

23. Paradise Hills Vineyard

  • Why We Love It: book clubs, classes, live music
  • Distance from NYC:  2 hours and 25 minutes by car

While they're not offering wine tasting due to COVID, you can still explore and have fun at Paradise Hills. Order a glass and take in the musical performances on the weekend. Plus, the outdoor patio provides a stunning look at the vineyard and the hills along the George Washington trail.

24. Jonathan Edwards Winery

  • Why We Love It: winery tours, summer music concert series, seasonal food events
  • Distance from NYC:  3 hours and 20 minutes by car

Step into the New Haven area for Jonathan Edwards Winery. The family-owned business offers wine tasting that includes five samplings daily. While their tours have been halted, you can still check in for any festivals, concerts and more. Plus, the space alone (featuring stone patios, large barn doors and a front-row seat of the sunset) is enough to make the trip.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

Real testimonials from real people –  we love our customers and they love us..

I just wanted to thank you for everything. We had a great time the other night, and the whole limo experience was wonderful! All the best – Brian

After researching my options for taking my boyfriend on a wine tasting for his 40th birthday, I decided on Metro Limousine Service, and boy am I glad that I did! My boyfriend and I have had THE most fun while on our wine tasting, and he was so pleased and surprised by the sumptuous accommodations provided in the limo! It was perfect, perfect, perfect. I wish I could do a commercial for you guys, but then if I did, I wouldn’t be able to reserve a future tasting with you guys, because everyone would be hip to the most perfect date/birthday/anniversary present in NY! Everyone was so courteous to me, even before the tour, reassuring me that I was all confirmed, and I can get compulsive, so this says a lot about the individuals running this establishment! Miss Julie was absolutely wonderful to me over the phone, Mike was so courteous the day of the tour, and let’s not get started on our driver, Bernardo! This had to be the NICEST guy anyone could ask to drive them from vineyard to vineyard. And our lunch was absolutely superb (we both had the grilled chicken sandwiches)!

If my boyfriend ends up proposing to me, I have you guys to thank, because he was so, so HAPPY with his birthday present!

Thank you for the best date ever, and for an unforgettable experience from the moment we were picked up, to the moment we were dropped off. You guys truly are a gem in the middle of the 5 boroughs! Sincerely – C. Ryan

I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time my daughter and her friends had last night…and her mom and sister, too… ?

…and wanted to mention what a lovely gentleman our driver, Jim was….the kids adored him!!

Thank you for the terrific experience. Take Care – April

Just wanted to thank you guys and let you know we had a GREAT TIME! Tom, our driver was wonderful and accommodated all of our needs!

We had been on a wine tour last year with another company…but your company has been the best so far! Lunch was delicious too! Thanks again-Jen

My friends and I had an amazing time on Saturday!! Richie was great, we appreciated his laid- back personality and he was very

accommodating. Ive recommended your company to alot of my friends already and I definitely plan on making it an annual event! I also

appreciate having the limobus it was a way better option for our group…Thank you for all of your help!! Danielle

I booked a wine tour with Metro Limousine service and Julie was incredibly helpful organizing our tour. Lauren our driver was friendly and efficient and overall we had a fantastic day thanks to Metro Limousine. Melissa Garville

I just wanted to let you know what a fantastic time we had on Saturday, and just wanted to make sure you knew how fabulous of a driver Gregory was. He was so wonderful to us and really made the day so much more fun! Thank you for your help and I will be sure to recommend your company to people in the future! Thanks-Meghan

Just a quick note to say that the limo service to and from AC went off without a hitch. The return trip, in particular, was very nice in large part to the driver, Tony, who couldn’t have been nicer and more efficient.I’ll definitely be using your company again. Thanks again for all of your help! Best-Vince Liaguno

I wanted to thank you so much for arranging the limo for us and for sending Jimmy to take care of us! We had such a wonderful time, my mom loved every minute as well as my entire family who were able to join in the special day! We had visitors from Chicago, VA, MD and PA and everyone loved the North Fork experience! I really appreciate the extra care and attention you gave us !! It was a memorable day for all involved! Diana O’Neill

I wanted you know that we had an amazing time on Saturday. JK was a great driver and we are going to recommend your service as well as use your service again. Thank you for everything. Aja Chism

I wanted to reiterate how wonderful my first experience was with metro limousine and li vineyard tours. Every little detail was taken care of for us from pick-up to drop-off. This was also my first experience planning a bachelorette party. Everything turned out fabulous. Charlie the limo driver was a delight and was extremely accommodating to our needs. We had a total of 19 girls and everything went smoothly. The lunch was better than we had all expected for a boxed lunch. We had a perfect day weather-wise and a perfect experience. Everyone is still talking about the party, two weeks later. I highly recommend this company and winery tour to anyone from a birthday to a bachelorette party to just a day out with some friends. Again, it was such a delight working with a company whose number 1 priority was making sure we were stress-free and happy. Look forward to booking another tour in the near future! Thanks-Jenna

I booked my sister’s bachelorette party through Long Island Vineyard Tours and just wanted to thank you for all of your help. Julie was fantastic throughout this entire process. She explained everything about the tours thoroughly and since I didn’t have much knowledge about the area, sent us to her 3 favorite vineyards. We held the party on Saturday, June 2, 2012. Our weather was rainy in the morning, but luckily it started to clear up while we were at the second vineyard. Along the way, we went to Baiting Hollow, Pugliese, & Vineyard 48. We ate our delicious & much needed lunch at Vineyard 48. We couldn’t have been happier with our limo driver, Jimmy. He got us everywhere on time and we were able to spend the afternoon at Vineyard 48. My sister said her bachelorette party could not have been more perfect. We were only a group of 7, but we met some fun people and had an awesome time. I have already recommended your services to several friends & co-workers. You made everything so easy & for a great price. Thank you so much. I will definitely be planning another tour with you in the future. Janine Harm

I just wanted to drop a note to let you know that we recently hired one of your buses to take my friends and I around the vineyards out east for a bachelorette party and our driver, Jimmy, made it one of the best experiences Ive ever had. He handled the (quite rowdy) crowd with ease and professionalism. He was also very helpful and thoughtful throughout the whole day. I will definitely be using Metro for future events and recommending your service to my friends. Thanks for making the day so great! Best-Tracy Bookspan

One word-FABULOUS!! Thank you so much for everything! The day was perfect! And Jimmy was the nicest! I will think of you and recommend your services!! I hope to talk to you soon! Thanks!! PS- also, thank you for the pie for my friend- she was so happy!! Randi

Matt and I wanted to let you know how wonderful it was to have your Limo Bus on Saturday. It was comfortable and it was great that we could all be together on the long ride back and forth to Montauk. Tommy was awesome! He was a great driver, accommodating and was very kind to all of us. Always had a smile on his face the entire day despite the rain for a lot of the drive. Please thank him again for us for getting us back and forth safely. Sabrina Lunde

We went on our wine tour this past Saturday, just wanted to let you know what a great time is was and how well it worked out. Our driver, Bernardo was fantastic- very professional, accommodating and really made the day run smoothly with 18 women! We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Thanks again-Katie Elias

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that our driver Roberto was fantastic, that everything was perfect (as you promised) and that we had a wonderful time. I highly recommend your company and tour to anyone and I will be booking with you again in the future. Thanks again-Samantha

I just wanted to thank you for everything this past Saturday! My bachelorette party was a blast! The package was a perfect deal and having everything included beforehand made it easy! The bus was spacious and our driver Bernardo was awesome! Everything at all the wineries was perfect! If I can send a testimonial in for your site, I gladly will! And I will be recommending you to anyone who asks! Thanks-Theresa Addeo

Just wanted to thank you for all your help with my sisters bachelorette party yesterday. Everything was perfect. The driver Tony was very nice. The transportation, vineyards and lunch all worked out perfect. We had a great day! I would definitely recommend this company. Thanks-Nancy

12 of the Best New York Wineries, From Brooklyn to the Finger Lakes

From the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley to New York City and Long Island, here are 12 of the best New York wineries.

Anne Olivia Bauso is a travel writer and hotel expert based in New York City. She has written hundreds of hotel reviews, from 5-star Ritz-Carlton properties to treehouse eco-resorts in the jungle.

vineyard tours ny

When it comes to wine making in the U.S., sunny California gets all the love. It's true, the Mediterranean-like valleys north of San Francisco are certainly ideal for vineyards. (Fertile soil is one perk of the area's seismic tendencies.) Yet many grape varieties are cuckoo for cooler temps, and Northern California is not the end-all, be-all of American wine production. On the opposite side of the country, New York state — whose viticulture was once rather limited to sweet concord ice wine — has quietly grown into a wine-producing powerhouse. Wine making in the state's Hudson Valley dates back to the 1600s, so it's not totally surprising that New York has emerged at the forefront of the industry.

From the North Fork of Long Island to the Finger Lakes and back to Brooklyn (really!), the Empire State is home to some 2,000 wineries and vineyards — the majority family-owned and several truly outstanding. Here are some of the best New York wineries and vineyards.

Finger Lakes Wineries

Ravines wine cellars in seneca lake.

The Finger Lakes may not be as wine-famous as Napa and Sonoma, but this rustic winery proves that the region is just as stunning. The incredible natural beauty — rolling bands of green vines, the deep, dark blue of glacier-carved Seneca Lake — would tempt grape lovers to stick around even if the wine wasn't very good. (Luckily, it's very good.) Ravines ' beautifully restored barn looks like it's straight out of California wine country, as do the artful meat and cheese boards and the wedding-ready tasting menus.

Nearby: The 1914 Geneva on the Lake Boutique Resort Hotel was designed to emulate a villa outside of Rome. Pay homage to the hotel's Frascati inspiration by drinking up lake views and a glass of sparkling.

Boundary Breaks in Lodi

This pristine winery on the Seneca Wine Trail focuses on cool-air-loving riesling grapes, grown on-site, fermented in stainless-steel casks, and made in styles ranging from sparkling to sweet to super dry. Red wine lovers, fret not: Boundary is also known for its fruit-forward cabernet franc.

Nearby: The Finger Lakes region is patchworked with family winegrowers….and orchards, creameries, and horse pastures. Between idyllic vineyard visits, explore the area's non-wine offerings, like Rue Claire Lavender Farm and Wolftree , a pick-your-own blueberry farm with an apiary and wool from Icelandic sheep, set between Seneca Lake and Finger Lakes National Forest .

Vineyard View in Keuka Park

Go for the vino, stay for the views. This fifth-generation grape farm has a primo spot far above Keuka Lake. For the full experience, grab a two-top on the terrace and sample the selection, from the just barely spicy (and quick to sell out) traminette to the dry marquette — harvested, crushed, and pressed on-site.

Nearby: If Vineyard Views isn't hosting a pop-up event with a local restaurant, drive three miles up the lake for a heaping tray of fried chicken and mashed potatoes (and a sundae) at Seneca Farms Ice Cream .

Stever Hill Vineyards in Branchport

This family-friendly farm doesn't quite compare to Vineyard View's lake scenery, but its panorama of grapevines and forested hills is as peaceful as can be. And it has the sort of warm, laid-back vibe that encourages all-day lingering, with a genuinely friendly staff happy to make recommendations. A renovated barn (with a backbone of 1850s hand-hewn wood beams) houses the tasting room, wine shop, and big back deck. Try the fan-favorite Old Barn Red (aged in New York oak) or, on a hot summer day, a juicy, boozy slushie.

Nearby: Conklin's Gully and Grimes Glen are lovely waterfall hikes within easy reach by car, for anyone really wanting to earn their afternoon wine flight. Work in a stop at the Havill Pottery farm studio, long run by a husband-and-wife ceramicist team, for functional souvenirs of the hand-painted stoneware sort.

Hudson Valley Wineries

Benmarl winery in marlboro.

Benmarl is what you're picturing when you think of the ideal upstate visit. The small-scale operation has spruce columns of grapevines stretching along the hillside, an antique pick-up truck hidden in the garden, and a driftwood gazebo framing the Hudson River Valley — the perfect spot for sunset photo ops. Benmarl focuses on small-batch NY wines, from their site-grown Baco noir and cabernet franc varieties to North Fork merlot. If you need to soak up all that wine, order a bubbling pizza, wood-fired in an outdoor brick oven.

Nearby: Toast to a day well spent at The Ship Lantern Inn , a cozy dining room that throws back to another era, 10 minutes up pretty Highway 9W. (If you're looking for a pre-winery meal, try your luck for brunch at Blooming Hill Farm . Even if the wait stretches into hour-long territory, it's time well spent.)

Millbrook Vineyards & Winery in Millbrook

With 130 acres that feel like the French countryside and a big vaulted barn venue, it's really no surprise that visitors love this Millbrook winery. The wine holds its own against the magical setting — sit at the tasting bar to sample Millbrook's chardonnay, cabernet franc, and heady pinot noir, or pick up bottles and go at your own pace, preferably in an easy chair on the front lawn.

Nearby: Millbrook's shop sells crackers, sea salt caramels, and other local goodies, but if you're looking to have a picnic or throw dinner on the grill, head four miles north to Big Rock Community Farms Market . The charming two-room shop in Stanfordville carries local H.V. produce, meat, cheese, and more on the ground floor of an 1845 house. Call in advance to visit Conrad Levenson 's open-air sculpture garden, a little further north, with whimsical works made from materials like scrap metal, salvaged wood, and wagon wheels.

Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery in Gardiner

After a morning hike through Minnewaska or Mohonk Preserves (or a morning scramble up Bonticou Crag), reward your efforts in Whitecliff 's cozy tasting room or shady picnic grove. The sustainable winery (named for the white cliffs in the distance) is known for its merlot and malbec blend (a bestseller), fruity vidal blanc, and oak-fermented chardonnay. There's a solid menu of affordable flights, too; just be sure to book your reservation through the website.

Nearby: For more local goodness, drive up to Butterfield for a rhapsodic meal celebrating the natural bounty of the Hudson Valley (you'll see Whitecliff on the excellent wine menu). If you're in more of a bar food mood, there's the quaint New Paltz gastropub, Huckleberry .

Milea Estate Vineyard in Straatsburg

Though it's new on the scene, this 98-acre vineyard has already carved out a big name for itself on the Dutchess County wine trail. Anchored by a charming white farmhouse, this small estate makes a crowd-pleasing sparkling rosé, a plummy merlot, and a crisp chardonnay that reflects Hudson Valley's unique terroir.

Nearby: Stand high over Ferncliff Forest — a 200-acre chunk of old-growth forest peppered with easy walking trails and old stone ruins — in its fire tower with magnificent views of the land and Hudson River. Swing by Migliorelli Farm Stand for fresh dinner supplies or check into Mirbeau Inn & Spa Rhinebeck for a luxe retreat.

Long Island Wineries

Pindar vineyards in peconic.

Long Island's North Fork is a string of upscale wineries — and Pindar Vineyards was among the first. These days, the former potato farm is now a 500-acre enterprise with nearly 20 varieties of grapes (and a famous sunflower field). Fans swear that Pindar wines, including their red table wine (a smooth bordeaux blend) and vivid cabernet sauvignon, could vie with those made in California and France.

Nearby: Remain transported at North Fork Table & Inn — the chef earned his chops in kitchens in Paris and Napa Valley.

RGNY in Riverhead

Maria Rivero González harvested grapes with her family for years in Mexico's Parras Valley before setting her eyes on the North Fork. Attracted by Long Island's cool, maritime climate, the Mexican winemaker opened her certified-sustainable vineyard in 2019, where she grows and bottles unfiltered cabernet franc, velvety viognier with a hint of pineapple, and other meticulously thought-out wines.

Nearby: Taste the freshest oysters of your life at Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market , a homespun seafood shack in Greenport, before retiring to the beautiful The Menhaden (and its rooftop deck overlooking the harbor).

Castello di Borghese Vineyard in Cutchogue

Castello di Borghese lays claim to the title of Long Island's first vineyard. In the early 1970s, its founders realized that the area's fertile soil and oceanic climate were irresistible to grapevines. Modern-day visitors swear the vineyard's still got it (it's run by the original family, after all), praising its excellent pinot noir, peppery cabernet franc, and zippy sauvignon blanc.

Nearby: Hit up another local 70s-era landmark, Magic Fountain , where homemade ice cream flavors range from kulfi (rosewater, pistachio, and cardamon) to vegan coffee almond fudge.

New York City Wineries

Rooftop reds in brooklyn.

Beaches, ruins, cathedrals, caves...and wineries. Yes, New York City really has it all. The city is home to a number of wineries (where wines are made from grapes grown elsewhere), but Rooftop Reds ups the ante and actually grows grapes (via a unique planting system) on a 14,800-square-foot rooftop in Brooklyn's Navy Yard. You'll have more than a dozen bottle selections, plus traminette, white, and dry rosé on tap — not to mention killer skyline views and bragging rights (how many inner-city vineyards do you know?).

Nearby: Former Crown Heights favorite The Food Sermon is a go-to for huge, healthy Caribbean bowls (think gingery rice with curried chicken and market veggies).

What types of grapes are grown in the Hudson Valley?

The Hudson Valley is home to a vibrant and diverse range of grape varieties, thanks to its unique climate and distinct terroir. Among the grapes grown in this region, you’ll find a mix of hybrid and Vitis vinifera varieties. Hybrid grapes, which are crosses between American and European (Vitis vinifera) varieties, are popular in the Hudson Valley due to their cold hardiness and disease resistance. Some examples of these hybrids include Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Traminette, and Baco Noir. In addition to hybrids, the Hudson Valley also nurtures classic European grape varieties, also known as Vitis vinifera. Some of these grapes, like Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Riesling, are well-suited for the region’s climate and soil conditions. Wineries in the area have been successful in producing high-quality wines from these varietals. The Hudson Valley’s unique combination of grape varieties allows for the production of a wide array of wines, from crisp whites to rich reds and even sparkling wines. As you explore the region, you’ll have the opportunity to taste these distinct wines and discover how the Hudson Valley’s terroir influences their flavors and characteristics.

Where are the Hudson Valley wineries located?

The Hudson Valley wineries are spread across the region, spanning several counties in New York State. Stretching from just north of New York City up to Albany, the valley encompasses a variety of landscapes and terroirs. Some of the counties where you’ll find wineries in the Hudson Valley include: Dutchess County: Home to wineries like Millbrook Vineyards & Winery and Clinton Vineyards, this county offers a mix of beautiful rural landscapes and charming small towns. Ulster County: With a backdrop of the Shawangunk Ridge and the Catskill Mountains, wineries in this area, such as Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery and Robibero Family Vineyards, boast stunning scenery. Orange County: Rich in history, this county features Brotherhood Winery, the oldest winery in America, as well as other notable establishments like Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery. Columbia County: Rolling hills and picturesque farmland set the stage for wineries like Tousey Winery and Hudson-Chatham Winery in this county. Rensselaer County: Nestled near the capital region, wineries in this area, such as Brookview Station Winery, are easily accessible and offer a variety of wine-tasting experiences.

Do Hudson Valley wineries offer tours and tastings?

Yes, many Hudson Valley wineries offer both tours and tastings, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the winemaking process and sample their unique wines. Each winery may have its own approach to tours and tastings, so you’ll find a variety of experiences available throughout the region.

Are there any special events or festivals at Hudson Valley wineries throughout the year?

Some notable events and festivals in the Hudson Valley include: Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest: Held annually in September, this event features a diverse selection of Hudson Valley wines, along with local food vendors, demonstrations, and educational seminars. The festival takes place in Rhinebeck, NY, and offers a weekend of fun and discovery. Wreath Fineries at the Wineries: This unique event, typically held on weekends between November and December, is organized by the Shawangunk Wine Trail. Participants visit various wineries along the trail, collecting holiday ornaments and enjoying wine tastings and other treats. Hudson Berkshire Wine & Food Festival: Taking place in May, this festival brings together wineries, breweries, and distilleries from the Hudson Valley and Berkshire regions. Attendees can sample a variety of products, enjoy live music, and learn from cooking demonstrations and seminars. Winery events and concerts: Many individual wineries host their own special events throughout the year, such as themed wine tastings, harvest celebrations, or live music performances.

What is the best time of year to visit Hudson Valley wineries?

The Hudson Valley is a delightful destination for wine enthusiasts year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm and experiences. Spring, from April to June, is a beautiful time to visit as the vineyards awaken with new growth and the weather is typically mild. With fewer crowds during this season, you can enjoy a more relaxed and intimate winery experience. In the summer months of July and August, the warm temperatures and lush landscapes provide the perfect setting for outdoor activities and picnics at the wineries. Additionally, some wineries host special events or concerts during this time, making for an even more enjoyable visit. Autumn, particularly from September to October, is often considered the best time to visit Hudson Valley wineries. This period aligns with the grape harvest season, and the region’s foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning backdrop for wine tastings and vineyard tours. Fall is also when many wine-related events and festivals, such as the Hudson Valley Wine & Food Fest, are held. While the winter months of November to March can be cold and snowy, there’s still a certain charm to visiting wineries during this time. Indoor tastings can be particularly cozy, and the winter landscape can be quite picturesque. However, be sure to check winery hours during the winter, as some may have reduced schedules or close for the season.

Highly recommend! NFWT was responsive over email, leading up to the trip, making every little change I needed and answering every concern. And on the day of, the driver was an absolute gem. Showed up on time, bus looked great, clean, had a working bathroom, had ice and waters, and Bluetooth… He was so friendly and helpful, getting us set up at each winery, patiently taking group photos for us, texting me when we were 15 minutes away from leaving each, and then coming inside to check on us if I didn’t respond, (drinking and socializing, so you know how it gets.) We got the lux option with lunches, and they were all good and served to us at a good time. We visited Raphael ‘s, which was an extra cost, but honestly so worth it if you have a crew who likes beautiful, ambience, and good wine. We also did Pellegrini ‘s and a private area for our group. It wasn’t as pretty and the service wasn’t as good as Raphael ‘s, but had some great wines. We are super happy with our experience with NFWT, and I was nervous because we were hosting an older crowd who is used to nice things. I will definitely use them again. Kasey M.

June 13, 2023

Before booking, I had spoken with Michael on the phone, who was amazing. I was unfamiliar with the wineries over in North Fork, and he was extremely informative and helpful. We visited ospreys, Pellegrini with the lunch delivery and duck walk. Tommy was our driver, and he was fantastic. He was so kind. He took many pictures of us (on a bachelorette party, so many pictures are a must!), and was in constant communication with me throughout the trip. We even met Michael at Pellegrini‘s and he was so kind, making sure we were enjoying ourselves. We were recommended NFWT through some of the guests on the trip. And they certainly delivered. I hope to use their services again – it was a memorable trip and experience! Kathy C.

June 7, 2023

Had a great experience with this company… Had a great experience with this company for my sister’s bachelorette party. They were quick to email me back and very thorough with information especially since so many wineries have restrictions due to Covid. Our driver Darrell was awesome. He made sure we were comfortable, knew how to work the music, and took tons of pictures of the group for us. You could tell he really knew the area and each winery well. He was really flexible too when we changed up the pick up location day of. Thanks Daryll! Nina S. October 7, 2022 This was an excellent experience all around... This was an excellent experience all around. Our bride-to-be was thrilled, and our driver took excellent care of us along the way. NFWT was on time, friendly, and responsive. I would recommend them to anyone! Bachelorette Party from Bellmore October 7, 2022 Wow!! Another amazing trip... Wow!! Another amazing trip. This was our second time using the North Fork team for our wine trip and they KILLED IT!!! We had 60 people, two buses, visited two wineries and a brewery everything went off without a hitch. Mike and his team are a pleasure to work with. Our drivers Rob and Dennis were professional and friendly and took great care of us. No question I will be booking next years trip with North Fork. We might need THREE buses after this amazing trip! (The 2 Vineyards where Laurel Lake and Pellegrini. The brewery was Jamesport Brewery) 2019 KDOC/TMEDIA Wine Tour- NYC October 10, 2021 Michael + team was able to tailor a 2 day… Michael + team was able to tailor a 2 day offsite trip exactly to our needs. He sent 2 coach buses for our team of 75. We visited Raphael‘s, where we had an executive lunch, group presentations with AV, and structured wine tasting, before doing a second, more casual, tasting with catered small treats at Laurel Lake.  Communication was seamless, and both wineries were absolutely wonderful. The next day, he sent the same buses for our trip home, with snack packs and wine bottles ready to go as takeaways for our guests. Our team had an amazing time. Highly recommend – – professional, family service! SquareSpace -NYC October 14, 2021 We used North Fork Wine Tours  for my friends bachelorette party… We used North Fork Wine Tours  for my friends bachelorette party and things could not have gone more perfectly! I was planning the event while working overseas this summer and I cannot express how easy they made the process for me. The fact that they specifically had wine tour options for a bachelorette parties which included food made them perfect for one stop shop. We also had an incredible driver, Nick, the day of. I would highly recommend! Stacy D/ Greenport October 7, 2020   "My family and I had a wonderful experience with Mike and team at NFWT!! We had planned a wine tour originally this summer and had to cancel last minute due to a family emergency. Mike could not have been more accommodating and understanding. Our family is so grateful to you for that! Once we were able to reschedule and head out to the wine tour – we made up for lost time and had a perfect day for my dad‘s 60th birthday celebration with Brett as our driver! We love the day so much we are hoping to make this an annual family outing!!" Ashley T. From New York, New York September 10, 2020   Our Fleet

7 Vineyards To Check Out Within 90 Minutes Of NYC

7 Vineyards To Check Out Within 90 Minutes Of NYC image

Matt Tervooren

October 2, 2020

New York makes the third most wine of any state in the US. There are a couple things you can do with that tidbit of information. You can repeat it the next time you want to make an awkward silence even more awkward. Or you can hop in a car, and check out where all that wine is made for yourself. If you go with the latter option, the vineyards on this guide are great places to start.

Benmarl Winery

Benmarl overlooks the Hudson River, and serves wood-fired pizzas you can eat outside on a deck while you wonder why Adirondack chairs aren’t called Hudson Valley chairs. In other words, there are lots of reasons to drive 90 minutes north to this winery in Marlboro, not least of which are their estate-bottled wines. Make a reservation through their website for proof that good cab franc can be grown outside France on a vineyard that’s both family and dog-friendly.

Brotherhood, America's Oldest Winery

This winery in Washingtonville produced its first commercial vintage 16 years before Napoleon’s nephew even had the estates of Bordeaux classified. It’s the oldest operating winery in the country, and while tours of its underground cellar are currently not being offered, you can still reserve tastings for up to six people Wednesday through Sunday.

Old York Cellars

New Jersey is dubbed The Garden State. And you know what grows in gardens? Wine grapes. Well, it depends how you define garden, but regardless, New Jersey makes some good wine. You’ll find some of the state’s best at Old York Cellars a little over an hour drive into farm and horse country in the Sourland Mountains. Sit on the big outdoor patio overlooking the vineyard, and pack your table with various wines and tapas any day between 12-6pm.

Torne Valley Vineyards

Walking around the grounds of this vineyard in Milburn feels like strolling around Storm King, but with grapevines instead of sculptures. They only make a couple of wines, but if you’re more interested in finding a gorgeous spot for a day date than listening to details about whole cluster fermentation, drive an hour north of the city to Torne Valley Vineyard.

Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery

Despite what your friend who just watched Sideways for the first time tells you, there’s no best or worst wine grape. And no matter what your wine preferences are, you’re likely to find something you like at Whitecliff. In the shadow of steep, tree-lined cliffs, this vineyard in Gardiner grows more than 20 different varietals, and you can try all of their sustainably-produced, vegan wines in tasting flights after making a reservation through their website.

City Winery image

City Winery

City Winery’s first location outside of a major city is a 22-acre project in Montgomery that’s centered around a converted mill. Along with a restaurant, barrel room, and event space, about one-third of the property is devoted to growing wine vines for the in-house wine program. Those wines are offered on tap in the tasting room, with flights available at outdoor tables overlooking a river that provides hydropower for the two-century-old industrial space. Check their website for reservations, and information about their live music series.

Rooftop Reds

Ask someone who uses the word terroir about special terroirs around the world, and they might mention Burgundy or the Rhone Valley. After they’ve caught their breath, tell them you know another, and it doesn’t require a plane, much less a car to get to. It’s the Brooklyn Navy Yard. On the roof of a building in the midst of unmarked warehouses, you’ll find rows of grape vines at Rooftop Reds. Make a reservation for up to 15 people, or go on Wednesday evening for a guided tasting and explanation of how to make wine in the middle of Brooklyn.

Sober Travelers Find Something to Savor in Wine Country

Mocktail trails, olive oil tours and elevated dining experiences are among the many ways the renowned wine-producing areas of Sonoma, Mendoza and Tuscany are appealing to sober or sober-curious travelers.

A green, brown and yellow illustration of a woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat and biking through a wine vineyard.

By Christine Chitnis

Amy Snook knows more about wine than your average traveler. Originally from California, she now lives in the Douro Valley of Portugal, her partner works in the wine industry, and she has visited 47 countries, many of which have celebrated viticulture. But seven years ago, on a trip to Mendoza, a winemaking region in the foothills of Argentina’s Andes Mountains, she opted to abstain from drinking alcohol, a decision she would repeat in future travels.

“It’s such a long flight to Argentina, and I was only there for 10 days,” said Ms. Snook, 34, a publishing professional. “I’m aware of how alcohol affects me, and I chose to prioritize feeling amazing every day of the trip over dealing with a hangover.”

During her visit, Ms. Snook bicycled between vineyards, reveled in breathtaking scenery, relaxed with spa treatments and engaged with sommeliers and winemakers, coming away with a new appreciation for sustainable and regenerative agriculture.

“The obvious question when you tell someone that you aren’t drinking is, ‘Out of all the places you could go, why travel to wine country?’” she said. “But to me, it makes perfect sense because these regions offer all the perks of luxury travel — wellness amenities, beautiful landscapes and fine dining.”

With 41 percent of Americans seeking to reduce their alcohol intake, according to a consumer-sentiment study released in January by NCSolutions, Ms. Snook’s experience is part of a larger trend: the rise of sober-curious or mindful drinking. While sober travel is hardly a new concept, its popularity is surging to new heights — particularly among younger generations — and forcing a reckoning in the wine industry. The 2024 State of the U.S. Wine Industry report , an annual forecast of market conditions and trends written by the wine-business analyst Rob McMillan, found that 52 percent of consumers ages 21 to 34 believe that consuming alcohol, even in moderation, is bad for your health.

This trend is reshaping travel to world-class wine destinations like Sonoma County, in California, as well as Mendoza and Tuscany. Blessed with temperate climates, extended growing seasons, fertile soils, rich histories and breathtaking vistas, these renowned wine locales are expanding their offerings to attract drinkers and nondrinkers.

Here are some of the restaurants, tour groups and wineries in those regions that are reinventing the travel experience to be more inclusive of the sober-curious.

Dining in Sonoma

If wine is a true expression of the land, embodying the unique characteristics of its soil, weather and the meticulous craftsmanship of those who cultivate it, can you still forge that connection without drinking?

At Cyrus , a Michelin-starred fine dining destination in Geyserville , Calif., the answer is a resounding yes. Sonoma County, double the size of neighboring Napa, made conscious decisions to protect and diversify its land use, ensuring grapes as well as agricultural crops were grown. Douglas Keane, Cyrus’s owner and chef, highlights the local harvest by working with small farms and purveyors to source his ingredients. Crosnes — a Chinese artichoke — from Alexander Valley Vineyards gardens, yuzu and finger limes from the citrus grower David Levine, and cheesefrom Andante Dairy have all ended up on Cyrus’s menu.

Also on the menu: Kally , an alcohol-free wine alternative produced with housemade organic verjuice and sourced from Northern California. Served at more than 15 other Michelin-starred restaurants, Kally’s bottles include Early Chardonnay, which is crisp, bright and changes flavor and aroma as it moves across the palate, similar to a fine wine. A tart, vibrant Golden Sparkler has notes of jasmine and citrus, and a floral, fruity Rosé Sparkler offers hints of strawberry and hibiscus.

“Chefs and sommeliers are interested in having precise nonalcoholic pairings. Their food was created to be prepared with sophisticated drinks, not just sparkling water,” said Scott Mitic, who created the beverage along with his wife, Katie.

Customers, too, appreciate having a choice, he said, noting that many of Kally’s most loyal drinkers are wine enthusiasts. “This is not an abstinence movement; it is a moderation movement.”

Cyrus Schultz, the wine director and sommelier at Cyrus, aims to create drinks that make sober guests feel just as special, if not more, than those indulging in traditional wine pairings. His nonalcoholic creations include the Rosé Champagne, an effervescent blend of coconut, white sesame, cherry blossom and lime, and the Apple Martini, a sweet, herbaceous concoction of pink lady apple, fennel and mint olive oil.

“The intention is never to mimic alcohol products, but to construct the pairings similarly to how a chef looks at a menu — different textures, temperatures and flavor profiles,” Mr. Schultz said.

These efforts are not limited to one restaurant. Chris Vomvolakis, senior manager of consumer public relations at Sonoma County Tourism , said bars, restaurants and wineries across the region are recognizing that it’s not all about wine.

The town of Healdsburg recently created the Mocktail Trail , with eight participating restaurants, and Meadowcroft Wines in the town of Sonoma curated a flight of original zero-proof cocktails. David Messerli, Meadowcroft’s marketing and strategy director, said the winery encourages guests “to discern aromas, flavors and nuances, much like they would with wine.”

“For those opting out of alcohol, we felt there was more we could do,” he said. “People have various reasons for abstaining from alcohol, and no one should feel excluded because of it.”

Women-led luxury in Mendoza

Mendoza, renowned for its malbec wines and stunning Andean landscapes, is no stranger to luxury accouterments, but sober guests? That is a newer phenomenon. “We have definitely noticed an increase in guests seeking nonalcoholic travel options in recent years,” said Victoria Stiles, sales manager at Cavas Wine Lodge , a luxury 18-room hotel set amid a 55-acre vineyard.

At Cavas, wine may be the main attraction, but guests can book spa treatments using vine and grape-seed extracts, join yoga sessions on the private terrace overlooking the Andes and vineyards, and take full-day hiking excursions to Aconcagua Provincial Park, a rugged, mountainous destination that is home to Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak.

Wild Terrains , a certified B-Corp travel company specializing in experiences for women, has planned three days of a 10-day Argentina tour to be sober-inclusive in Mendoza. Built around women-owned businesses, stops include boutique lodging at Entre Cielos , horseback riding in the Andean foothills, home-cooked asado at Estancia Los Chulengos and a private dining experience at Michelin-starred Zonda Cocina de Paisaje . The meal offers special mocktail pairings with distinct flavors like lemon verbena, beets and burro, an herb used to make digestive teas and infusions.

“In Mendoza, our trip centers on talented female winemakers who are pushing boundaries in a historically male-dominated industry,” said Lauren Bates, founder of Wild Terrains. “While these experiences include wine tastings, we want sober travelers to feel intentionally included even if they are skipping the wine tasting.”

Sofia Pescarmona, owner of the Bodega Lagarde vineyard and Zonda Cocina de Paisaje, said that while the restaurant experience aims to showcase their wine, nondrinkers will also appreciate it.

“We truly believe we can offer an elevated experience for those who don’t drink wine by highlighting other seasonal produce grown on our property,” she said.

Tasting olive oil in Tuscany

Wine tastings epitomize indulgence, especially immersed in the heart of Tuscany, when visitors can savor glass after glass of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Salvatore Ferragamo Jr., chief executive of the Il Borro wine estate and grandson of the fashion house’s founder, encourages guests to find other ways to indulge.

“The olive harvests in the autumn produce the region’s spicy, piquant ‘green gold,’” said Mr. Ferragamo.

Il Borro, in Tuscany’s Valdarno, is a meticulously restored medieval village that includes 58 suites, three vacation villas, two restaurants, stables, working vineyards and olive groves. Olive oil production began in 1996, following the recovery of varieties like Frantoio, Moraiolo and Leccino that had long been neglected. Now, after touring some 80 acres of organic groves, guests can engage in a tasting experience of two distinct oils, one full-bodied with floral, fruity and grassy aromas, the other robust, peppery and dark.

Another option, Tuscan Organic Tours , offers immersive daylong experiences that delve into wine and oil but also other rich agricultural offerings. Delicious tours with private transportation highlight tastes and flavors that include Pecorino di Pienza, one of the most renowned Italian cheeses, saffron and fresh pastas. The tours include visits to organic farms, lunches, tastings, and opportunities to participate in cheese-making and saffron harvesting.

Tons of Chocolate and Wine Arrive on World’s Largest Cargo Sailboat

grain de Sail II

At  Pier 17  in the South Street Seaport, New Yorkers can find the world’s largest cargo sailboat, Grain de Sail ll . The wind-powered ship arrived in New York on Wednesday with 350 tons of goods. Everything from Grain de Sail brand fine chocolates and organic coffee to cosmetic products, wine, and French fashion house luxury goods were on board.

The Grain de Sail ll is the largest cargo sailboat.

“The best knowledge of what France is able to do is on this vessel,” said Jacques Barreau, CEO and Founder of Grain de Sail in France. Grain de Sail ll is the newest member of the company’s fleet of cargo sailboats. It stretches 52 meters, more than twice as long as its predecessor. It can travel to New York from Saint-Malo, France in about 18 days.

The Grain de Sail ll in New York City.

Grain de Sail’s cross-Atlantic voyages rely entirely on wind energy. The company’s mission is to empower zero-emission shipping with “retro-innovation,” blending ancestral technology with modern technology. This commitment to low emissions provides sustainable shipment options for Grain de Sail’s coffee, cacao, and wine brands, and other businesses that can now ship their products without contributing to worldwide maritime shipping’s global CO2 and methane emissions.

Compared to traditional cargo shipping, the process of unloading goods from Grain de Sail vessels averages about five days faster. This is because the sailboats have cranes directly on the deck. Thus, they can avoid harbor congestion and the long, strenuous process. Instead of taking 30-35 days to unload, Grain de Sail vessels take about 20 days.

One of the sailboat's mates works on the mast aboard the Grain de Sail ll.

Grain de Sail was founded in 2010 by two twin brothers, Olivier and Jacques Barreau, who are renewable energy experts from France. The company’s inception stemmed from its goal to reduce the carbon footprint of maritime transportation.  Wind  is a reliable, savvy alternative to the high environmental costs of fossil fuels. Grain de Sail also emphasizes its promise to preserve the quality of goods, so you’re introduced to one of the only floating wine cellars. To properly maintain the quality of the bottles, the vessel is fitted with temperature and humidity control features.

“We must shift our focus on the quality rather than quantity,” said Barreau. “We must change our mindset to products that last longer and generate less pressure on the environment.”

Jacques Barreau, CEO and Founder of Grain de Sail, on board the Grain de Sail ll.

In New York City,  several retailers  sell goods delivered from the Grain de Sail. Not only can you support local businesses, but your conscious buying is helping to decarbonize shipping.

After the ship leaves New York City on April 15, 2024, Grain de Sail ll will return to France, loaded with various goods. This is the first load of many for the Grain de Sail ll . In total, this vessel plans to sail the seas five times a year, trekking from France to New York and then down through the Caribbean, where the sailboat will dispatch humanitarian aid, working alongside local NGOs. The sailboat will also restock its coffee and cacao supply on its journey through the Caribbean. That supply is then brought back across the sea to France, where the coffee is roasted, and fine chocolates are produced.
