Are you looking for a challenging  mountain bike tour  in the alpine terrain of  Davos Klosters ? Then this tour is just right for you: the route from Davos to Arosa is considered an absolute must for passionate  mountain bikers . Spend a day exploring the beautiful mountain scenery of the region with one of our experienced  mountain bike guides  from Ride and Smile.

The starting point is in Davos. From there, the Parsennbahn takes you to the Weissfluhjoch. Once there, the descent follows in the direction of Langwies, in order to then continue by train to Arosa. On the tour we only use the traditional mountain railways so that you can enjoy the trails of Arosa Lenzerheide.

Bike Tour : Physical fitness and good bike technique required

The tour is suitable for both e-bikers and traditional bikers. Overall, the route includes only a few meters in altitude, which you have to master on your own (around 250 meters in altitude). There are also no carrying passages on the route. Nevertheless, good driving technique at the S2 and S3 level is a prerequisite, as well as a certain level of physical fitness. The total duration of the tour including the bus ride (1.5 hours) is around 8.5 to 9.5 hours.

Individual bike tour according to your wishes

Depending on your wishes and needs, we will be happy to put together an individual tour for you. For example, if you are interested in a group excursion by  e-bike  or are traveling with a larger group, we naturally also offer customized tours to  Arosa Lenzerheide.  Contact us so that we can elaborate a personal offer for you!

Please note that the price given here only includes the tour guide. Costs for meals during the excursion, transport with the mountain railway and public transport are to be paid separately. The maximum number of participants is six people.

Trust our Ride and Smile bike guides team and look forward to an unforgettable day in Davos Klosters and region!

Trans-alpine adventure: tour itinerary.

lenzerheide mtb tour

This E-MTB tour in Switzerland will take you on a journey across the Swiss Alps, over high Alpine mountain passes and into lush valleys, sampling traditional Swiss and Italian mountain produce as you go. You’ll be riding at over 2,000m / 6,500ft and cross the high alpine border into Italy, and there is an element of exposure on some trails.

You should arrive in Lenzerheide at least one day before your tour start date, to allow for any travel or baggage delays and to give yourself time to relax after your journey.

We recommend staying at Hotel Dieschen in Lenzerheide, since this is where your guide will meet the group tomorrow.

Your guide will meet you at Hotel Dieschen in Lenzerheide in the morning. Over a coffee he will go through the all-important pre-trip briefing, and answer any questions that you may have.

After your guide meeting set up rental bikes, before hitting the trails in and around the world-famous Lenzerheide bike park.

Your guide will build you up progressively to warm up the legs and make sure everyone is confident on their E-MTB, before returning back to your Lenzerheide hotel for your first evening meal as a team.

Today you will leave Lenzerheide behind and start your high-alpine adventure with a gondola ride high above the valley to Rothhorn and the first of many breathtaking vistas that you will encounter during this mountain bike tour Switzerland.

Once you have taken in the view you’ll start a long and famous descent that will take you to the valley floor and the town of Arosa, by which point you’ll be fully awake and appreciating why Switzerland holds such appeal for mountain bikers!

After a break, another gondola ride and perhaps a great local coffee to set you up for 7km and 500m vertical descent of pure flow on a newly-built singletrack flow trail to lunch.

After lunch we’ll embark on a long ride towards the main town of Graubünden – Chur. The door to this beautiful area. On singletrack, gondolas and uphill climb we hit the town.

There the first beer stop is awaiting us while we catch the train to Klosters and our next accommodation where you’ll be welcomed with great food and the typical local hospitality.

Make sure you get plenty of rest because tomorrow you’ll have even more descending to tackle!

You’ll wake to the sound of cow bells this morning, then we’ll leave our mountain accommodation and work our way down to the gondola station where we board our first uplift of the day. We will utilise this seamless infrastructure today and throughout the week to ensure we reach the best trails and see as much of the region as possible.

The trails today will be predominantly flowing, but you can be sure that you will encounter slightly more technical features and sections that will demand thought and consideration, which will include a true highlight – the Chörbschhorn – which is punctuated by an alpine style lunch mid-descent.

After a tough morning of riding we can have a more relaxed afternoon, with a massage and a bit of shopping, or your guide can take you back out for more after lunch!

Today we start our morning with an easy pedal towards the IMBA Epic Trail and Davos Glaris, and from there we will catch the gondola to whisk us up to Rinerhorn. Once at this high point, we spend the rest of the morning traversing on the Epic Trail all the way to Monstein, when we will be met by a beautiful lunch on the patio.

Suitably fed, watered and rested in this truly awe-inspiring location surrounded on all sides by jagged peaks, you will saddle up again and head further along the IMBA Epic Trail on a moderately technical descent that will see you arriving at Filisur.

We’ll then give our legs a rest and take the train to Bergün, a very picturesque, old mountain village where you’ll get to experience authentic Swiss mountain life!

After another good breakfast, a shuttle will collect us and transfer us to the top of one of the most beautiful passes in the area – the Albula Pass. From there we start our riding with a nice, long single track mountain trail into Engadin. At the trail end our shuttle will be waiting for us to transfer us to the next highlight – the Bernina Pass.

A long and steady climb will bring us closer to the Italian part of Graubünden, passing high alpine forests and enjoying views of glaciers and pristine lakes along the way.

We’ll stop at the top of the pass for lunch, which will give us our first signs of Italian-speaking Switzerland, then after a short rest, we’ll start another downhill section from the Bernina Pass to Poschiavo, in the Italian part of Switzerland.

To finish the day we have a short spin to the beautiful lake of Poschiavo, to our small hotel in Le Prese, where they specialise in local and organic produce in their restaurant.

There we will enjoy dinner with a variety of local tastes, and all products from the valley itself.

We have an early start today, but this is to meet our shuttle. For about 30 minutes we wind our way around many curves higher and higher back towards the Italian border. We’ll stop for a shot of espresso, then start our ride.

We have a challenging, but short, climb and then we see the view to the Bernina region again, with its majestic peaks.

After enjoying this tremendous view we start a trail that very few people can claim to have ridden: 1700m downhill on old Romanian traffic and smuggler routes. It is a challenge, but the experience you’ve built up over the course of the week will prepare you for this long descent.

We’ll arrive back in Poschiavo, where we’ll enjoy perhaps the best lunch of the week with pizza and caffè before boarding the Bernina Express train to take us over the pass for our final flowing descent to Pontresina.

You’ve worked hard this week and for our last day the emphasis is very much on ‘fun’! We’ll aim to hit as many trails as possible from the hotel in Pontresina, using gondolas, trains and cable cars to link up a number of trails that cross the valley around St.Moritz.

We will set out to complete three trails in the morning before visiting a local café half way up the mountain side, where you can settle down to the best burger and coffee in the country…fact! After taking in the astonishing views down the valley you will hop on your last train transfer to a high point of 3053m and your final fling of this mountain biking tour Switzerland.

Starting from 3053m you’ll set off on rocky singletrack trails that will have you pumping and jumping your bike down trails that seem to be made by the gods!

It’s short but sweet! You’ll then have 20 mins of work left, where you will climb up to a mountain hut. This is your last chance to pick up water before we start descending for the next hour on trails that change in style all the way to the valley floor.

When you arrive back at your hotel in Pontresina you can take advantage of spa (and laundry) facilities before our final celebratory dinner together.

Sadly, today you leave Switzerland behind after a magical week of mountain biking across the Alps. Your hotel is just a short walk from Pontresina train station, where you will catch the train back to Zurich airport.

The first day of your mountain bike tour New Zealand starts off bright and early at 8.30am, when your guides will meet you at the designated pre-trip hotel. We’ll transfer to our local base so you can build your bike or get kitted out with a rental.

Once everyone’s geared up, we’ll pack the van and hit the road. Before we set off your guide will go through the all-important pre-trip briefing.

Your warm-up ride and first taste of singletrack here in New Zealand, will be a traverse of the volcanic crater rim that separates Christchurch from the impressive Lyttelton harbour. You’ll have the chance to shake-down your bikes and legs after your travels before we drop in to the fantastic Christchurch Adventure Park. You’ll enjoy a mix of flow trails and pedalling, and you’ll get spectacular views out to the Southern Alps which will be our destination later in the tour.

lenzerheide mtb tour

After a couple of laps we’ll chill out on the deck at the Park with a cold drink and lunch, before we head off in the direction of the Southern Alps to check in to our mountain lodge for the night.

If time allows we’ll saddle up for another ride before our welcome dinner, this time with more of a ‘big mountain’ feel.

Not wanting to miss a minute of this stunning landscape, we’ll enjoy drinks as the sun disappears behind the hills. When we’ve had our fill of stargazing we’ll bunk up in our shared accommodation and get ready for the start of something truly epic tomorrow.

Eat well and muster up all your strength over breakfast, because today we hit Craigieburn – world-renowned for its flowing singletrack trails that weave and wind through the area’s beautiful beech forests.

The mountainous terrain of the Craigieburn Range has spectacular views that rival the grand majesty of the American Rockies, so we’ll spend most of the day riding through and enjoying the varied trails Craigieburn has to offer. Mountain biking with these incredible views will take your breath away.

Once we’ve had our fill of this epic riding, we’ll drive through the mountains to the historic Gold Mining town of Reefton.

Over a hearty dinner we’ll share stories and prepare ourselves for tomorrow’s ride on the legendary Ghost Road.

Today, there are more than a billion bicycles in the world and each year the number of bicycles produced is double the number of cars. The U.S. is home to the second highest number of bikes on the planet (after China) which begs the question: Why aren’t more of us building our vacations around our beloved bikes?

The pandemic prompted an increase in bicycle tourism interest and the number of travellers looking to take their next trip on two wheels is steadily increasing. According to Coherent Marketing Insights, cycle tourism is projected to grow 9.5% each year over the next six years , becoming a $241.27 billion market by 2030. Still, it’s Europeans who are leading the pack on the tourism cycle track. They make up 30% of bike tourism revenue.

However, with the incorporation of tech-forward travel tools and travel providers offering on-the-ground support in a wider variety of destinations, bike tourism (including the solo, self-guided variety) is becoming more accessible and more appealing.

“As technology changes and travel behavior changes, people are realizing they don’t need to go in a group or don’t want to go in a group,” says Maria Elena Malpezzi-Price, co-owner of ExperiencePlus! bicycle tours . The company has just reintroduced self-guided cycling trips in Italy in response to these evolving travel trends, and they’re seeing travellers embrace the option for several reasons.

Clients, she says, appreciate the ability to customize their days around their own interests while remaining flexible. “People's sense of exploration and satisfaction are heightened when they do it on their own. You realize you're capable of doing that and it gives you a better understanding of how another part of the world works,” she explains.

“That's one of the goals for us—to truly share [the experience of] other countries, all of the ins and outs, like going into the grocery store and being able to make a sandwich to have your picnic. And then you realize, ‘I just had what would be considered a gourmet lunch in the US for $25 for like €5.’ Those are the kinds of things we encourage people to do.”

Price is yet another reason to choose the self-guided route. Without the added cost of a full-time guide, tourism providers can offer trips that maintain a high standard of quality at a lower price.

Malpezzi-Price says that the key to her company's success with self-guided tours comes from having a strong team on the ground in every destination and a good knowledge of the local hospitality providers and cycling infrastructure. “You really have to know your local resources well. You need to trust your taxi drivers. You need to trust your hotels. You need people to show up and deliver the bikes because there isn't a tour leader there to help curate and solve problems. So it has to be planned very well,” she says.

Each self-guided trip kicks off with a bike fitting and a thorough briefing so that travellers set off equipped with the knowledge and safety skills they need to enjoy their trip. Like many cycle tour providers, ExperiencePlus! also offers a luggage transfer service, meaning that cyclists need only bring their day pack for each ride. A daily itinerary sets you up with a route and the details about your accommodations for the evening.

“It's just enough structure to take away the hard decisions, but not too much that you don't feel like you can have your own day,” says Malpezzi-Price. “This is what I love about biking in general—the fact that you are having your own unique experience.”
