Installing a 6.0 transmission cooler on a 7.3L Excursion

  • Add to quote

Is there a step by step installation instructions on how to install this cooler? Do you install trans cooler in front of the radiator and condenser? How do you convert from 3/8 to 1/2" tubing? I'm sure its fairly easy and I'm making a big deal about it, I just want to be sure that I am doing it correctly.... Thanks

OK, here it goes: remove front grill remove hood latch thingy loosen a/c bracket(left side) Take out four srews from bracket through front disconnect tranny lines from under passanger side, plug lines get two each, male/female brass hose barbs 3/8 and 1/2".(you'll see when you remove oem cooler) about 6' of tranny rated 3/8 hose about 2' of tranny rated 1/2 hose make proper connections install new cooler in place where oem cooler came out hook up tranny lines reverse some of the above steps add additional fluid test flow check for leaks you should be done about 4 to 6 hours for me(I'm slow) Paul B

I removed my grill and front bumper, made the access to connect the lines easier. Took me about 3hrs start to fiinsh.

Does anyone have the dimensions of the 6.0 coolers? I think there are 2 sizes of 6.0 coolers available. TIA.

Don't have the dimensions but one cooler is 25 tubes and the other is 31 tubes.

Thanks. I was looking for acutual measurements (w x h x d).

It sounded like you weren't sure if their was to coolers and I was just letting you know that their is 2 different coolers.

Thanks for the installation instructions. Where did you get the 1/2" transmission hose? I went to Pep Boys, AutoZone, and Kragen all do not carry 1/2". Does Ford carry it or any other parts store? How do you take off the bumper, what bolts should I remove to make it easy to reinstall. The demensions of my cooler is 23"Wx17"Hx1.5"D, hope this helps.

[ QUOTE ] The demensions of my cooler is 23"Wx17"Hx1.5"D, hope this helps. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks, Is that the 25 tube or 31 tube?

31 tubes. Hey I used to live in Boonton, I think it was mechanics Street, near Dow Chemical. its been a long time since I lived there.

[ QUOTE ] 31 tubes. Hey I used to live in Boonton, I think it was mechanics Street, near Dow Chemical. its been a long time since I lived there. [/ QUOTE ] Thanks. I have a couple SETRAB, 50 Row Coolers, 13" overall width x 15.25" tall x 2" thick - 36,000 BTH/hr I was thinking of using. Dow Chem in Boonton, is now new WalMart. Is there any site on line to get a 6.0 cooler or is it luck of draw on ebay or the Ford Stealership?

I am not sure if any of the sponsors sell the 6.0 trans cooler. I got mine thru ebay.....Good Luck

[/ QUOTE ] Try a hydralic line shop(heavy equipment repair). Don't need to take bumper off, BUT you can if you want. Opps, one thing I forgot is you WILL have to remove the blocker beam mounted under the front end to do the job. Xs are different than the trucks. Paul B

FYI 5C3Z-7A095-CA is the 31 row cooler 5C3Z-7A095-CB is the 25 row cooler After countless hours trying to find out which one was which I resorted to looking at pictures online and calling wrecking yards. The CA is the 31 row and the CB is the 25. If you are looking for a good price for a used part try car-part.com this is a national data base of salvaged parts. Search your vehicle F250 1999 newer Superduty and when it asks for parts select "Auto Trans Cooler". Search all areas and enter your zipcode. Next select 2005 - 2007 and pick F250 and similar vehicles. This will allow you to search F350's as well. It will also list f150's but you are looking for a 6.0 so it will be easy to find. I picked one up this week from Ricks Auto Parts for $85 deliverd. 800-245-5588. The guy there was real patient, he actually went out and searched for the part number on the cooler. When the part # was differnt (it had a 4 instead of the Z) He actually went out and counted the rows for me. I still havent figured out why there is a 4 instead of the Z but it came out of an 05 f250 that was totalled. Maybe the Z is scrathed off and looks like a 4, who knows. Rick said he had 2 of them. Another place that had the 31 row version was Crosstown Auto Parts 204-222-0999 They wanted $125 but still cheaper than ebay. If you don't want to make the conversion lines yourself Brian's Truck Shop has a premade kit 870-422-3673. I ordered a valve body at the same time, I figured if I was draining it I might as well go for the BTS valve body too. I am also doing the 6.0 intercooler and you can find those on ebay pretty easily or car-part.com. Diesel power products has the intercooler hoses you will need. There is a link on dieselpowerproducts.com called the ford intercooler swap that explains it. Hope this helps...AJ

Completed the install of the trans cooler today. Took it for a test drive 5 - 10 minutes then checked the fluid level and the level showed full Hot on dip stick. Should I be concerned that the fluid level didn't drop? Could this mean no fluid is getting to the cooler? I double checked the hoses I installed ..No Kinks were found. What should I check now?

Product Description

Heavy loads are no match for a 1999-2003 7.3L Powerstroke equipped with the Mishimoto 7.3L Transmission Cooler. The stock 7.3L Powerstrock transmission cooler can come up short of providing sufficient cooling, and with more weight in the truck bed, transmission temperatures tend to rise. Avoid those high temperatures and complement your cooling system with the latest addition to Mishimoto's 7.3L Powerstroke performance parts, the all-new 7.3L transmission cooler. With the Mishimoto 7.3L Transmission Cooler, high transmission fluid temperatures will be the least of your worries. The 37-row Mishimoto stacked plate cooler provides a larger surface area over both of the stock coolers. Core volume is increased by a whopping 265%, and fluid capacity is increased by 1.0 qt. The increased size of this 7.3L transmission cooler provides a proven 10+ DegreeF drop in transmission fluid temperature. No modifications are necessary for installation, and, just like all Mishimoto 7.3L powerstroke parts, this cooler comes with the Mishimoto lifetime warranty.

Transmission cooler for Excursion

  • Add to quote

Looking at buying 7.3 Excursion for towing boat and boatload of people here in Las Vegas. I know the factory oil cooler sucks. so looking into cost to upgrade if I buy it. The 6.0 cooler needs mods, but the Mishimoto cooler does not. Will the Mishimoto cooler for 7.3 super duty's fit in the Excursion?

Also, should I put larger pan on the transmission? AFE with the port for trans temp sensor or Mag Hytec with larger capacity?

2002 ford excursion trans cooler

A derale transmission pan is cheaper, and would cool much better but I never saw the need for a larger transmission pan after the 6.0L cooler upgrade. it was a game changer for towing. I lived in CA and regularly went to Reno and towing a 30+ft 5th wheel in 100 degrees never got over 176.

I would think so and 99.9% sure it would. The only mods needed are: two 3/8-1/2in hose adapters few feet of hose I think 8 hose clamps I would high encourage you to look at the oem 6.0l cooler OR myself and few others have had great luck with the dorman brand. I got the price quote from rockauto and called xdp diesel performance a vendor on here and they have the $5 price beat. been 2+years running strong. the dorman unit knocked my temps 25+ degrees lower and I have towed regualry 30+ft 5th wheels for a good spout before changing hobbies etc.

2002 ford excursion trans cooler

Mishimoto says their oil cooler does fit the Excursion as well. I just picked up the Mishimoto oil cooler plus the Derale pan that is mentioned above. Together those should handle anything I throw at the trans, I hope! Planning to install them soon and see how much of a difference it makes. Currently my trans temps max around ~190 depending on load, hauling my 22ft enclosed race car trailer. Also, I tried ordering the Mishimoto oil cooler from XDP only to see it was backordered for over a month. Oddly Amazon had it with prime shipping direct from Mishimoto....Got my Derale oil pan from there as well...would post the links but guess I can't yet.

I would not recommend getting a larger capacity transmission pan. It will not help with cooling. It will only increase the time that the transmission takes to come to running temperature, and decrease the cooling capabilities by creating a larger volume of oil to cool. The best location for the temperature sensor is on the transmission and not on the pan. I doubt you will even need a transmission cooler upgrade if you are only towing a boat unless it weighs over 10k. But the cooler upgrade is needed if you are planning on towing heavy, and is overall a great modification to increase transmission life.

TRU-COOL 4739-1 TRANSMISSION COOLER

Product description.

  • Transmission coolers help extend the life of your transmission fluid and can prevent transmission failure from overheating.
  • At 240° varnishes form and transmission life expectancy is cut in half.
  • At 260° the transmissions internal seals and rubber parts harden and major damage starts.
  • Above 295° your transmission starts slipping, clutches burn out and carbon forms.
  • With each 20° drop in operating temperature, your fluid and equipment life doubles.
  • Installing a cooler before damage starts and by reducing the transmission fluid temperature by as much as 60° can greatly extend the life of your transmission.
  • Installing a transmission cooler can prevent transmission burnout.
  • The 99-03 stock 7.3L cooler is a 28k GVW model. This Tru-Cool Max 4739 unit is a 40K model.
  • This cooler is a "stand-alone" cooler designed to handle the heat load by itself, but in the 99-03 Ford trucks it can be used as an add-on cooler in addition to your OEM cooler.
  • *In the 94-97 Ford trucks, remove your factory cooler.
  • 2 styles of Mounting Hardware - Quick connect nylon straps & steel mounting
  • Installation instructions - nonspecific to application. (NO special tools required)*

*Additional Hose and Mounting bolts may be needed for your application. 1999-2003 Ford F250 & F350 owners can purchase our Ford Superduty specific installation kit with special instructions, extra bolts and extra hose specific to your vehicle.

Q: "I plan on a 27-30 TT next spring and with moving it in and out of camp grounds and my storage area on the military base, I'm worried the tru-cool won't keep the temp down."

A:  "I had the same concerns you do. I felt I had to have a cooler with a fan for stop and go traffic and times when I was not moving much air over the cooler. However, I did order the Tru-Cool Max and came out of my OEM tranny cooler and into the Tru-Cool and out to the tranny. Boy was I wrong in my assumption. Since I have installed the Tru-cool, I have yet to see temps over 165. I was seeing 195 - 200 unloaded in stop and go traffic. Just recently I went to Florida on vacation. I was pulling a camper right at 30 foot long. Everything with all gear and truck and passengers weighed in at 17,300 pounds. Tranny temps never exceeded 165 and it was between around 96-98 degrees outside. The Tru-cool works...period." --- James in Tenn

The previous question was pulled from a public Forum concerning this cooler

---------------------------------------------------------

Q: What makes the Tru-Cool different or better than anything else?

A:  To answer this, you have to understand what different cooler designs there are in use.

The most common type is the "tube and fin". This style has small tubes that the fluid passes through and the tubes are surrounded by thin aluminum fins that cause passing air to turbulate or tumble over the tubes to pull heat away from them.

The next kind and far more efficient is the "stacked plate". This type uses flat hollow plates for the fluid to pass through. This increases surface air and the thinner area of oil increases the amount of heat transfer.

The third kind- that of the Tru-Cool Max - Is the "fin and plate". As the name implies, it uses the plates in the stacked plate design and the air fins of the tube and fin design and combines them for the most efficient type of air to liquid cooling transfer possible.

Q: I have added an additional cooler to my Powerstroke truck and I still see higher than expected temps. How do I check to see what is wrong?

A:IMPORTANT! The temps should be measured in the pressure port in the driver side of the transmission body. If you are measuring temps from a tee in the output line, temps will read about 30 degrees hotter than temps read from the pressure port.

TESTING:

  • Bring the transmission up to temperature. It needs to be at least 100 degrees for this test.
  • Turn the truck off.
  • Remove the rear line from the transmission and place it into a bucket or similar container so that you can measure volume of your flow.
  • Have someone turn the truck on.
  • At idle (in park), you should measure 32 ounces of fluid in your bucket - in 15 seconds or less. This is an absolute minimum number. A properly working transmission will flow that amount in about 10 seconds or less. You should not see ANY fluid pumping out of the rear transmission port.

TEST RESULTS:

  • If you have the proper amount of flow, your transmission pump and coolers are working fine. SO, if you are running hot and have the proper flow (with no fluid coming out of the rear transmission port), you most likely have a mechanical problem causing high heat.  This could be torque converter slippage or one of many other internal problems. You may have to see a professional at this point to help diagnose the problem.
  • If you do not have proper flow, OR you have fluid coming out of the transmission rear port, you either have a cooler blockage, OR a faulty cooler bypass valve. Here's how to tell.
  • Trace the forward transmission line to the front of the truck.
  • Remove the line from the 1st place it enters a cooler or the radiator (if so equipped).
  • Now, do the same flow test checking flow at this point.
  • There are two outcomes.
  • The first is that you now have enough fluid flow- this means your cooler /coolers are partially blocked. To determine which cooler is plugged you would perform the same flow test through one cooler at a time.
  • The second outcome will be that you don't have enough flow even with all coolers disconnected. This means you have an internal pump problem.

IMPORTANT! The outcome of this test assumes that you have NO fluid exiting the rear port of the transmission. If you perform a flow test with the coolers disconnected and you get fluid from the rear port on the transmission, your cooler bypass valve is bad.

I purchased a Tru-Cool Trans cooler a couple of weeks ago. Went on easily.  It's nice to finally have something advertised and work as well as such. The trans temp with a large, approx. 14800# of tractors and trailer + truck, load, the temp was 40 degrees cooler than normal.

Thanks again. Tim H.

  1. Recommendations for trans cooler?

Excursion - King of SUVs - Recommendations for trans cooler? - I've got a 2002 Excursion, 7.3 PSD, that I use frequently for towing a 9,000 lbs loaded toyhauler.
