It’s located less than 10 miles west of the Shenandoah and Potomac River confluence at Harpers Ferry. That’s a short drive to a town that formed its unique identity with historical sites and a charming main street filled with shops, dining, and more.

A Quick History of Charles Town

visit charles town wv

Did you know that the first President of the United States had siblings? Born in 1738, Charles Washington was George Washington’s youngest brother and would become the founder of Charles Town thanks to substantial land inheritance in present-day Jefferson County.

Charles Washington originally moved to the area in 1780, where he built Happy Retreat to live. Over his remaining years, he donated and sold land near this residence to create the town. Although he died just 12 years after the city of Charles Town was officially established by the Virginia General Assembly, it continued to grow and preserve Mr. Washington’s legacy.

As one of the earliest towns in the United States, it endured several pivotal moments in history that are still evident today. It was the site of military occupancy during the Civil War, with many artifacts preserved in the Jefferson County Museum. It hosted the infamous Virginia v. John Brown trial in the Jefferson County Courthouse. It’s even part of the 136-mile-long Washington Heritage Trail, which includes the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

While visiting Charles Town, note the streets named after Washington’s brothers and wife.

Take a walking tour to see historical markers around town highlighting events like the hanging of abolitionist John Brown for his attempt to raid Harpers Ferry in 1859 and the birthplace of Major Martin Delany, a free African-American who served during the Civil War.

12 Things To Do In Charles Town WV: The Ultimate Seasonal Guide!

Welcome, globetrotters, to Charles Town! Your wandering steps have brought you here, and an adventure is calling your name. Now that you have arrived, you can choose to stay in the comfort of your room and watch the world goes by… or you can go out and embrace this new region. Meet the locals. Wander the streets. Explore its history. Is your hand on the doorknob already?

Charles Town isn’t at the top of many travelers’ bucket list, if it even has a place on those lists at all. But the quaint town is nicknamed the “Holy Town” for a reason, and now is the time to see it in a new light. Let Enjoyfuntrip accompany you on the journey with the list of things to do in Charles Town WV !

But Wait, Is Charles Town The Same As Charleston?

Charles Town WV

First things first, Charles Town is not the same as Charleston. Both of these lovely towns call West Virginia home, but they are 322 miles away from each other. That means around 5 hours of driving if you travel nonstop.

Many people might have heard of Charleston only, and I’m not surprised. After all, it’s West Virginia’s capital and cultural center. The city even played host to many notable events throughout the years and made it to the top 10 travel destinations in 2022 by Lonely Planet.

Well, that doesn’t mean you should overlook Charles Town! Though small, the Holy Town boasts a long and rich history dating back to its founding in 1976. Since it was founded by Charles Washington, George Washington’s youngest brother, Charles Town is intimately tied to the early days of the United States.

With plenty of historical traces, amazing findings , natural vistas, and exciting entertainment, the tiny but mighty town promises you an unforgettable experience all year round. So are you coming in the summer or during the holiday? Scroll down, and we will discover the best things to do in Charles Town WV for each season!

Things To Do In Charles Town WV – Spring

Spring in Charles Town brings warmer temperatures and a sense of optimism in every corner as residents take off their winter jackets. It’s time to enjoy the freshest farm products from the local market, embark on some leisurely outdoor sports, and picnic with your loved ones while surrounded by nature.

Cascade Falls

Cascade Falls West Virginia

Without a doubt, Cascade Falls is one of the most magnificent water attractions in West Virginia (and arguably on the whole East Coast!). The falls, which are 69 feet in height, crash into a vast pool surrounded by huge cliff walls and luscious greenery. What we get is an awe-inspiring vista that embodies both serenity and power.

Aside from the scenery, Cascade also receives a 5-star rating on TripAdvisor because it’s super family-friendly. With platforms and wooden stairs, the majestic falls are easy to access even by wheelchairs, allowing any visitors to get a close look. Meanwhile, youngsters can snap Insta-worthy shots from various angles!

After working up your appetite by hiking up the waterfalls, take the whole family to the nearby campground to enjoy lunch while getting your dose of fresh air. With the birds’ songs and the sounds of water gushing over the rocks, an hour-long picnic here will feel like a week. That’s how relaxing and tranquil it is.

Charles Town’s Farmer Market

Farmer Market Charles Town WV

As mentioned, spring is the best time to get your fill of local veggies. If you want to take home fresh fruits, vegetables, and other farm products, head to Charles Town’s Farmer Market!

The market is open every Friday from 9 AM to 12 PM. Visitors can interact with friendly vendors and add delicious, hearty goods to their baskets. All of them come at excellent prices.

The residents also flock here to enjoy breakfasts, grab a coffee, and hang out. By spending the morning at Charles Town’s Farmer Market, you will become a part of their tie-knitted community. More than a place to shop, this has become the heart of Charles Town, connecting both the locals and tourists.

Locust Hills Golf Course

Framed by the splendid Blue Ridge Mountains, Locust Hill owes much of its brilliance to the location. If there weren’t any golf courses in this spot, the acres upon acres of rolling hills, streams, and lovely ponds would still be impressive. With the course here, though, it has become one of the most picturesque layouts in the country.

Locust Hill GC, CharlesTown WV 210501

According to Golf Digest Magazine, “every hole at Locust Hill is defined by its natural landscapes with the style of play determined by the elements.” Perhaps that’s why the course is consistently ranked among the top five courses in West Virginia. Feel the happiness of spring breezes and take in the surrounding beauty while you tee off!

Things To Do In Charles Town WV – Summer

Everywhere you turn during summertime in Charles Town, something exciting is going on. You can partake in the annual Summer Festival at the township park or catch free baseball games at Terry L.Marcus stadium.

However, keep this in mind: The average temperature is around 85°F, which is quite high. When the dazzling sun starts to wear you out, you can cool off with a glass of beer, then find some exciting indoor activities to escape the heat.

Harpers Ferry Brewing

Harpers Ferry Brewing Charles Town

So you think you can only find the best craft beer in Stowe, Vermont ? Think again! Boasting stunning views, rich history, and a unique collective spirit, Harpers Ferry is a delightful place to visit. However, the delectable drinks are what truly make it thrive.

Nestled on the cliffs that overlook the Potomac River, Harpers Ferry is well-loved by the locals and beyond. They craft organic, locally-sourced drinks made with the purest ingredients and classic brewing techniques. Whether alone or with a group of friends, you can stop by to chill with a glass of beer and forget about the outside world for an hour or two.

After all, sipping on a cold brew in the summer is one of the best feelings in the world!

Hollywood Casinos

Hollywood Casinos Charles Town

When night falls, it’s time to explore Charles Town’s vibrant gambling scene! Head to the Hollywood Casinos, roll the dice, and try your luck. Along with poker, slot machines, and table games like roulette or blackjack, the casino also features live horse racing at the nearby track. Will the Goddess of Fortune be on your side tonight?

If you are not into gambling, you can still marvel at world-class performances and endless forms of entertainment. Live music will play at the event center until the wee hours. Oh, and don’t miss out on this chance to grab a bite at one of the on-site restaurants – they are said to be the best places to eat in Charles Town WV !

The Old Opera House

Another way to spend a cozy summer night at Charles Town is to catch a show at the historic Opera House and learn about the landmark’s fascinating history. Aside from the six main stage productions, the Opera House also features a one-act play festival and a ballet every year.

Old Opera House’s 100th Birthday Season Celebrates History And Diversity

When August rolls around, they host summer camps in acting, dance, and voice, promising children and teenagers a wholesome experience.

Things To Do In Charles Town WV – Fall

To me, autumn is all about hot apple cider, crisp air, lovely foliage, and ghost stories. Put on your favorite sweater and enjoy the coziest season in this quaint town!

Cool Spring Nature Preserve

With over 30 acres of marshes, meadows, and woods, the Cool Spring Nature Preserve is the best place to get the leafy autumn view in Charles Town. As you feel the leaves crunch beneath your boots on a leisurely stroll, you will be surrounded by beautiful hues of gold, orange, and red. That stunning scenery would make for a perfect postcard!

Cool Spring Nature Preserve Charles Town

Tucked deep in the forest is the 1869 house owned by Susan B. Thornton. The lovely cottage is among the building in Cool Spring Nature Preserves. What’s more, the area is also home to a variety of exotic animals, and they tend to be more active during the cooler months. If you want to see deer, red pandas, and bonobo apes up close, you know where to find them!

Ghost & Vampire Tours

Things to do in Charles Town WV in the fall

When someone brings up “ghost stories”, your mind would probably wander to Galveston or Bartlesville . Surprisingly, with plenty of ghost tours and haunted historical landmarks, you can explore the spooky world right here in the Holy City!

Among the tours, the most sought-after is Charles Town’s Haunted History Walk by Angie and Tim. With a deep knowledge of the area’s history, these phenomenal tour guides will tell you about plagues, real serial killers, and the other-worldly spirits said to haunt the city’s streets still.

Not terrifying enough for you? Go for the “extreme tour”, where the guides will use ghost detectors to find traces of paranormal activities. Watch your back, folks!

Appalachian Trail Conservancy

The Appalachian Trail is a national scenic destination that spans over 2,100 miles. It’s super picturesque during the falls, with vibrant willows, remnants of summer wildflowers, and trees that lend a splash of fall colors to the landscape.

2022 Appalachian Trail Conservancy Annual Meeting

For a fun and relaxing time at the trail, I recommend hiking the boardwalk trail to the stunning viewpoint on the south shore. From there, you can see the lake and watch various bird species. Don’t forget to bring binoculars and a zoom lens to snap some beautiful photos!

Things To Do In Charles Town WV – Winter

From November onward, Charles Town basically turns into a winter wonderland. With Christmas lights lining the snowy streets, you may feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale.

For me, the best way to spend winter in this small town is to slow down, trace back in time, and embrace quiet nostalgia as we wait for the new year to come.

Jefferson County Museum

Jefferson County Museum Charles Town

Established in 1965, the Jefferson County Museum and Library showcase permanent exhibits covering a hundred years of local heritage, such as the daily life of the Shenandoah Valley’s Native Americans in the 20th century. History enthusiasts can also marvel at the artifacts, images, and documents about the Washington families.

Beallair Museum

A more low-key destination is the Beallair Manor, which dates back to the early 1800s. It was once the residence of Washington’s great-great nephew, Colonel Lewis.

Beallair Museum Charles Town

Access to entering the home is relatively limited. However, tourists may still admire the ages-old architecture, feating an exquisite brick exterior and elegant stone columns.

Christmas Market Place

Leave it to the Holy City to throw an incredible Christmas party! Running for decades, the Charles Town Christmas Marketplace is a classic holiday market that honors long-standing traditions and exudes authenticity. More than 40 vendors gather together downtown to promote plenty of goods. These include unique artwork, handcrafted jewelry, ornament, and other artisan-creating holiday treasures for you to decorate your home.

Christmas Market Place

This is a holiday event like no other since it features unique family activities, such as sitting on Santa’s lap and having breakfast with Santa. Come out to support local merchants and get a jump on your holiday shopping by checking out some of the handmade gifts available!

“Country Roads, Take Us Home”

“Almost heaven, West Virginia” – that’s how the legendary singer-songwriter John Denver described the state in his classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Indeed, Mountain State deserves to be one of the most sublime places in the U.S.

But if you only have time for one city, make it Charles Town. This small town perfectly captures West Virginia’s spirit: So wild, yet so elegant. The perfect combination of active recreational opportunities and entertaining excursions here will satisfy your adventurous soul – I can assure you that.

Follow my list of things to do in Charles Town WV , you will soon understand why people can’t get enough of this tiny but mighty area.

After over 10 years in the field, I've learned enough about the "business" of travel to pass along some precious insights to other globetrotters. You can call me a seasoned-world traveler or an "off-the-grid" pioneer, as I've actually dabbled in both. Traveling is part of my whole life; thus, I go out of town at least once a month for new getaways. Hopefully, all tips and tactics I've picked up along the way can help anyone as enthusiastic about exploring the globe as I am.

Charles town, wv.

Charles Town which includes heritage elements and a monument

Visit Charles Town

Charles Town is known for its associations with the Washington family. It’s also the site where prominent abolitionist John Brown was hanged before the American Civil War began. Get familiar with the town’s past at historical homes and play slot machines at the casino.

The town was founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, George Washington’s younger brother. As you explore, notice that the streets are all named after Washington family members, including his brother Samuel and wife Mildred and a square named after George.

Visit Happy Retreat, the one-time home of Charles Washington. Admire the Greek Revival-style structure from outside. The interior is not generally open to the public.

Another major historical site in town is the Gibson-Todd House, an architecturally eclectic building dating back to the late 19th century. Look for the marker on the grounds, indicating the spot where abolitionist John Brown was hanged for attempting to incite a slave rebellion.

Stroll down Washington Street to see the still-functioning Jefferson County Courthouse where Brown was tried. Learn more about the history of Charles Town and the surrounding region at the Jefferson County Museum.

When you’ve exhausted the town’s heritage attractions, enter the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Watch thoroughbreds racing, hope to get lucky on some of the 2,700 slot machines, play table games or enjoy a meal at an on-site restaurant. Other fun activities in the region include tastings at Bloomery Plantation Distillery, which produces a range of flavored liqueurs.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking the trails and bird-watching at the nearby Shannondale Springs Wildlife Management Area or playing a round of golf at Sleepy HollowCountry Club. For evening entertainment, attend a performance at the intimate Old Opera House theater.

Charles Town is just over an hour’s drive from Washington, D.C. The nearest train station is in Harpers Ferry, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) away. Delve into history of the Civil War era and beyond at this small Appalachian town.

Husband loves Hollywood Casino

The only thing I didn’t like is when we went to the casino they allow smoking. For a non smoking that was terrible. In Maryland your not allow to

Paddy’s Irish Pub in town is a must! Definitely will be back to Charles Town

There's the casino/racetrack, and nothing else. If you're there for a casino, it is a good casino and you will have a good time. Otherwise, there's not much in town.

I went for a concert at the Casino - I always enjoy Harper's Ferry

17 Charming Small Towns in West Virginia You Need to Visit (2024)

It’s a state famed for its beautiful scenery, a place of thickly wooded gorges and mountain peaks that spiral out around the landscape, offering up some of the best hiking and outdoor activities in the country.

Known as The Mountain State, it’s easy to see why people are drawn out into the wild here, away from the city lights of Charleston, and the small towns in West Virginia are the places to be to find the true culture of the state, with access to the best outdoor recreation and small town charm that you could ask for.

1. Lewisburg : quaint towns in West Virginia

visit charles town wv

Lewisburg once received the accolade of ‘Coolest Small Town’, and its charms haven’t dimmed over the years.

It’s a unique place that combines gorgeous nature with a thriving, artsy downtown area.

There’s an eclectic mix of restaurants serving up everything from West Virginia classics to more modern takes, the world-class music of the Carnegie Hall (one of only four in the world), and a bustling community of local artists that keep the place filled with color and life.

And outside the town, there’s all the stunning scenery that you’d expect from one of the best small towns in West Virginia, with the tree-decked peaks of the Allegheny Mountains signposting the way to some of the best fishing, hiking, and, when the snows come, skiing in the state.

2. Charles Town

visit charles town wv

A true community-led place, Charles Town is a perfect slice of quiet West Virginia life.

There’s a neighborly feel to the place that comes from generation after generation living here, knowing each other, caring about this beautiful place that has raised them.

Its historic downtown (watched over by the beautiful Jefferson County Courthouse) is a charming mix of quirky architecture and independent businesses that comes to life with the regular festivals and events that are hosted throughout the year.

The picks of the bunch are the Charles Town Heritage Festival, a celebration of the town’s long history, and the West Virginia Wine and Arts Festival, a riot of color and festivities that shows the state’s thriving present.

With all of this going on and one of the lowest crime rates in the state, it’s one of the best small towns in West Virginia to live in.

3. Thomas

Thomas is a tiny little town of around 600 people that flourished with the arrival of coal mining in the area.

Its thickly wooded, rugged surroundings meant it took a while to first be settled but once people put down roots here the town began to grow and grow, booming as industry carved out its space in the mountains.

Today, the coal has gone, and a flourishing little town has been left in its place.

The historic buildings that were left behind have become a beautiful variety of local businesses that give the town a vivid, community-based feeling.

Case in point, the great beer and regular live music that bring the historic building of the Purple Fiddle to life every night down by the riverside.

There are beautiful trails that wind along that riverfront and more that head out into the mountains to satisfy any need to explore or to walk off any lingering effects of the previous night spent dancing along to the bluegrass rhythm.

All in all, it’s one of the best little towns in West Virginia.

4. Fayetteville

visit charles town wv

This charming small town is located in the heart of the New River Gorge and is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, including rock climbing, white water rafting, and hiking.

Visitors can also explore the town’s historic downtown, which features a variety of shops and restaurants.

If you want to bring some adrenaline to your time in the great outdoors of West Virginia, you need to be in Fayetteville.

It is perched at the edge of the beautiful, wild space of the New River Gorge, immediately recognizable for the stunning bridge that spans across it.

It’s the state’s best location for white water rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, and any kind of outdoor activity that gets the pulse racing.

Of course, not everything has to be full throttle, and the region is also home to some of the best fishing and meandering hikes in the state.

5. Marlinton

Marlinton excels at being a small town.

It has everything that you would think of, from the stunning mounting backdrop to the cozy eateries, the feeling of wide open space to breathe, and that close-knit community that is always there for you.

It has an old-school charm about it, there in the historic buildings like the restored Pocahontas County Opera House , the place to bring some high culture into your small town getaway.

And when you want to head out into the wild, it is perfectly located to access multiple state parks ad the unique ecosystem of the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area.

6. Romney : West Virginia small towns

visit charles town wv

Romney is one of the oldest towns in the state, a place where deep history mixes with stunning scenery and quirky small-town living.

It’s up in the Potomac highlands with panoramic views of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains, offering all the opportunities for hiking, fishing, and outdoor exhilaration that you can expect from West Virginia.

It’s particularly special in fall, when canyons and mountainsides turn every shade of amber, red, and gold, a whole landscape turned to color.

The best way to experience all of this is the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad .

A historic train takes you on a beautiful route through the mountains, letting you watch out for bald eagles flying around the peaks, and providing delicious meals in the dining car.

It’s a perfect piece of old-world luxury and an unmissable experience if you’re in the area.

7. Helvetia

Helvetia Creamery

Helvetia is the smallest place on this list by some distance, a tiny settlement of fewer than 100 people.

But it is a special place.

It was settled by a mixture of German and Swiss immigrants and its remote location has meant that the culture and traditional ways of life that these settlers brought with them still flourish here.

Whether it’s traditional alpine-style cheese from Helvetia Creamery, or authentic holiday celebrations like Fasnacht, there are so many parts of this unique place that make it stand out among even the best-known of the other quaint towns in West Virginia

8. White Sulphur Springs : small towns or cities in West Virginia

White Sulphur Springs

You’re likely able to tell what the big draw is here, the rich mineral springs that you can find throughout the area and that have made it a destination town for centuries.

They were first reported as being able to help heal and calm back in 1778 and have been bathed and soaked in ever since.

The area around the town is a soft, green landscape of undulating hills that rise into tree-covered mountains, and there are some brilliant hiking routes to explore.

You can understand why people would come here to relax, unwind, and soak in the space and the springs.

For a truly gourmet experience, book yourself into the Greenbrier Resort, a world-class facility that continues the town’s spa tradition in a glitzier setting, with some great golf, beautiful food, and a real feeling of luxury.

9. Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry

This charming town is where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers come together to form The Point which looks out to Maryland and Virginia.

It has a long history, having played a part in the abolition movement, seeing the first actually functioning American railroad, and being the site of pivotal events in the Civil War.

You can learn all about these events at the museums of the town, like the unique John Brown Wax Museum, or the numerous really well-preserved historic buildings that make up the town.

10.  Berkeley Springs : best small towns in West Virginia to visit

Berkeley Springs

Another town famous for its natural springs, Berkeley lays claim to being America’s first spa.

It’s the perfect place to combine small-town living with some natural luxury, the ultimate stop-off if you’re looking for a few days of rest and recuperation.

The water that bubbles up to the surface is a steady 74 degrees, warmed by molten lava deep, deep below the surface, and anybody can book a half-hour slot at the Roman Bath House in town to kick back and soak it all, breathing in some lush mountain air and letting the mineral water work its magic.

11.  Snowshoe

Snowshoe

If you’re looking for mile after mile of pristine slopes, beautifully maintained runs, and some of the best facilities in the country, snowshoe is the place to be.

It is the perfect West Virginian ski town and it comes to life over the winter, offering unparalleled access to some of the best runs in the state.

But despite its name, it’s a treat all year round, when the snow melts to reveal over 100 hiking and cycling trails, feeding the rivers and lakes that become perfect opportunities for tubing and swimming.

If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, not many of the other cute towns in West Virginia can compete.

12.  Seebert : charming towns in West Virginia

Seebert

Seebert is an oasis of calm along the banks of the tranquil Greenbrier River.

It’s the perfect place to get away for awhile, living a rural life, eating good food, and watching the sunset over the river banks.

To really immerse yourself in nature, try out the Greenbrier River Cabins.

It can be a serene place, but if you want to add some adrenaline into the mix there are water sports to choose from as well, whether it’s a leisurely kayak or some tubing.

13.  Elkins

soda shop

Nestled at the border of the Monongahela National Forest is the charming town of Elkins.

It’s a heady combination of a lovely town and gorgeous scenery that offers up some of the best restaurants and recreational activities in the area.

If you’re looking to grab something to eat you can’t miss out on the seasonal menu at the vintage restaurant and Wine Bar, a cozy spot that serves up some of the best food in town made with local ingredients.

And once you’ve eaten your fill, either meander around the historic downtown or take a trip on one of the historic trains that chart their way out of the town and into the lush landscape that surround it, taking in the sites of the forest or heading to Seneca Rocks for some world-class hiking and rock climbing.

14.  Shepherdstown : cute towns in West Virginia

Shepherdstown

Shepherdstown is perched on the banks of the Potomac River and is within easy distance of major cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C., making it the perfect small town to head to for a weekend break.

Life moves at the leisurely pace of the river here, people drifting through the charming stores and independent restaurants that make up the old-school downtown area, soaking in a quieter pace of life than you’ll find in the hustle and bustle of the cities that are only an hour and a half away.

15.  Philippi

West Virginia

There are historic buildings, like its famous covered bridge and the lovely Barbour County Courthouse, scattered throughout the town.

And once you’ve settled into the steady rhythms of rural life here, head out into the surrounding hills to hike, hunt, and fish, relishing the wide open space of this remote corner of the state.

16.  Sutton

Nestled deep in the Monongahela National Forest, spending time in this tiny town of fewer than 1,000 people is a complete immersion in nature.

It’s a feast of scenery and wildlife, sometimes literally, with some of the state’s best hunting going on in the surrounding area.

The town itself has a rich culture that comes to life in the events that are scattered throughout the year, such as the Sutton Heritage festival, a celebration of the people, landscape, and rich history that make this quaint town so special.

17.  Buckhannon

Buckhannon West Virginia

Buckhannon is one of the lesser-known jewels of the Allegheny Mountains, a place of pristine nature and famous hospitality.

It’s the perfect base to explore the landscape, spending your days out tracing the hiking trails that wind by river and mountain before heading back into town to the classic Southern hospitality of the town.

It’s a real community-focused place, with families flourishing here over generations, revelling in the mix of charming small town and glorious wide open landscapes, and makes the perfect small town to head out to for the weekend and soak in some serenity.

2024 solar eclipse map: Where to see the eclipse on April 8

These 2024 solar eclipse maps will help you make the best decision about where and how to watch the total solar eclipse on Monday (April 8).

map of north america showing the path of the april 8 solar eclipse

It's finally here: Today, (April 8) a total solar eclipse will pass across the skies North America, giving more than 33 million people living in 15 U.S. states a rare view of the totally-obstructed sun, and — weather permitting — a taste of some seriously strange eclipse phenomena .

If you’re wondering where the total and partial phases of the eclipse will be visible, the good news is that almost everyone in the contiguous U.S. will be able to see the celestial spectacle to some extent. But for a more detailed view of the eclipse’s path, take a look at these handy eclipse maps, courtesy of GreatAmericanEclipse.com.

Solar eclipse 2024 path of totality map

Totality is the moment that every eclipse-chaser lives for: The moment when the moon completely covers the sun’s face, resulting in a brief but eerie darkness in the daytime. The path of totality , shown in the map above, is the path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface.

On Monday (April 8), totality will begin in Sinaloa, Mexico, then move northeast up to Texas, ultimately crossing 15 states before moving on to Canada. The states where totality will be visible are: Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine — although Tennessee and Michigan will only be glanced by the moon's shadow.

Related: April 8 solar eclipse: What time does totality start in every state?

Viewers MUST be within the path of totality to witness the total phase of the eclipse; if you are off the path by even a mile, you will only see a partial eclipse, and miss out on the spooky daytime darkness. Furthermore, the closer you are to the center of the path of totality, the longer totality will last for you — up to a maximum duration of 4 minutes, 27 seconds in Torreón, Mexico.

Note: Totality is the ONLY TIME when it is safe to view the sun without protective eyewear like certified solar eclipse glasses . You must protect your eyes during the entire partial phase of the eclipse, no matter where you are.

Solar eclipse 2024 partial eclipse map

A map of total and partial eclipse coverage across North America on April 8, 2024.

If you live in the U.S. and can’t make it to the path of totality, a partial eclipse still awaits you on April 8. The entire contiguous U.S. will have some view of the partial eclipse, ranging from 99% coverage of the sun just off the path of totality to about 15% coverage far to the northwest of the path.

The map above shows how much of the sun’s disk will be blocked from your location. Watching the partial phases of the eclipse — which last about an hour and 20 minutes before and after totality — means wearing protective eyewear at all times. Failure to do so could result in permanent eye damage, according to NASA .

If you want to experience the celestial spectacle but don’t have a pair of eclipse glasses handy, there are many other ways to safely enjoy the partial eclipse . These include making a homemade pinhole projector , using a pasta strainer to project the shadow of the moon onto the ground or watching one of the various eclipse live streams available.

If you want to see totality but don’t live within the path, driving or taking public transit to a city within the path may be possible. The map above shows how far the drive is to the path of totality, based on where you’re coming from. Meanwhile, the map below shows the most populated cities within the path of totality — many of which are expected to be flooded with millions of eclipse tourists on April 8.

The biggest cities within the path of totality include: San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton and Montreal in Canada; and Torreón and Mazatlan in Mexico.
