  • Nanortalik is the southernmost town in Greenland and is surrounded by 5 settlements and several sheep farms. One of its surrounding settlements, Narsarmijit, is the most southerly inhabited location in the entire country.
  • Vertical cliffs and steep peaks characterize the landscape around Nanortalik. Ulamertorsuaq (1,858m) and Ketil Mountain (2,000 m) have one of the world’s highest climbing walls.
  • Qinngua valley is home to Greenland’s only natural forest. Tall mountains protect the 15km long valley floor from the cold winds that blow off the ice sheet allowing arctic tree species to grow straight and reach heights of up to 6m.
  • Although tourism is growing, the main economy of Nanortalik is crab fishing, hunting for hooded seals, and fishing in general.
  • Nanortalik means “the place with polar bears” in the Greenlandic language, as polar bears live and hunt on the sea ice outside of town.

With vertical walls that tower over intricate fjord systems and “sikorsuit” sea ice lurking just outside the harbour during the spring, Nanortalik has more in common with East Greenland than the rest of South Greenland. Rock climbers and mountaineers from around the world are drawn to the granite peaks of the nearby Tasermiut Fjord, while hikers and kayakers mount multi-day expeditions to explore the unparalleled beauty of the harsh rock that rises straight up from reflective waters.

How to get to Nanortalik

Nanortalik is located on a small island of the same name near the mouth of the Tasermiut Fjord. To get there, visitors must first arrive at the airport in Narsarsuaq and then take a helicopter or boat transfer to the town. It is also possible to pitch your tent outside the hostel and pay a fee to just use the amenities. Things to do in Nanortalik

Nanortalik is the gateway to the spectacular Tasermiut Fjord and mountains that offer a wide range of adventures to suit all adrenaline levels. Sailing trips are the most relaxed way to enjoy nature’s masterpiece, gliding past the sheer mountains that tower over Klosterdalen (Monastery Valley) and all the way to glaciers that spill down from the Greenland ice sheet near Nanortalik. It is also possible to enjoy an overnight sailing trip where accommodation is provided in comfortable pre-arranged tents and a dinner made from Greenlandic ingredients is served around a campfire.

Other sailing trips from Nanortalik will take you to visit one of Greenland’s few forests, small settlements hidden between the jagged peaks of the Cape Farewell waterways, and the Uunartoq hot springs, where 38-degree Celsius water relaxes muscles and keeps you warm despite icebergs floating nearby.

For a more active holiday, multi-day kayaking and hiking expeditions offer the chance to explore and take in this spectacular landscape in more detail. Experienced backcountry hikers and kayakers can chart their own adventures but must be equipped with safety equipment, including emergency beacons and defense against the king of arctic wildlife, the polar bear. However, there are also many professionally organised expeditions from Nanortalik that take care of everything for you, cover all the highlights of the area, and typically last between 5 days and two weeks.

Expeditions can also be arranged for experienced climbers and mountaineers who want to tackle some of the tallest climbing walls in the world. Together with Ketil mountain (2,000m), Ulamertorsuaq (1,858m) is the most commonly climbed, there are also unique climbing possibilities in almost all the fjords around Nanortalik.

Exploring Nanortalik Island itself, there are several day-hikes that leave directly from town. Climbing to the top of Qaqqarsuasik (Big Mountain / Storfjeldet) or Quassik (Raven Mountain / Ravnefjeldet) for breathtaking views over the island can be done guided or independently. Or you can visit the ruins at Sissarissoq, where Nanortalik was first established, by walking along the coast. Keep a sharp eye out as you hike because there are usually plenty of whales (especially Minke whales) close to Nanortalik during the warmer months.

Back in town, the area around the old colonial port is almost unchanged from when it was built and presents an authentic and well-preserved experience of a 19th century Greenlandic settlement. Ten of its buildings now operate as showrooms for the Nanortalik museum, with exhibitions ranging from traditional seal fat production, healthcare and medicinal plants, Viking clothing, radio communication, traditional vessels like the kayak and umiaq, and the famous shipwreck Hans Hedtoft that disappeared into thin air. Although you can visit the museum independently, the best overview can be obtained as part of a city walk, which also introduces you to other areas of town and can be extended to include a kaffemik and/or traditional Greenlandic dinner with a local family.

Cruise the sheltered waters of Tasermiut Fjord and marvel at the extraordinary scenery along this waterway that stretches deep into southwestern Greenland. You will travel into the fjord’s mouth near Nanortalik and continue on into a natural wonderland of steep-walled mountains, snow-capped peaks and gorgeous vistas that seem to go on forever. Thousands of Norse Vikings settled this area in the 10th century and remnants of their stone buildings still stand in the stark treeless landscape. Today, dozen sheep farms blanket much of the suitable terrain.

You will also pass landmarks such as Nuugaarsuk Point on the fjord’s eastern shore and Saputit, an inlet whose name refers to the stone weirs that the indigenous Inuits built to hold fish. If the conditions permit, you will have the opportunity to disembark and walk on the surrounding ice cap. Be sure to keep an eye out for wildlife such as ringed seals, minke whales and white-tailed eagles.

"Life is short and the world is wide" - Simon Raven

Well said, Simon. And where does your next trip goes to? If you are considering going to Greenland. This tour is a great way to get to explore a part of the world's biggest Island.

With no more than 56.000 people - is Greenland the least populated place on earth. What does that say about Greenland? That you can go to so many, many places where you'll be in the middle of nowhere - far away from everything. This will give you the ultimate nature experience. Isn't that what we all dream of?

The keyword of this tour is without a doubt: Tasermiut Fjord.

Tasermiut Fjord is 70 km long and considered as one of the ten wonders of the Arctic by Lonely Planet. You will be paddling through the southwestern part of Greenland to reach the "big walls", Icebergs and sandy beaches.

You will start and end this tour in small villages. This will give you a clearer idea and understanding of the Greenlandic people. The days in between will be well spent in the pure nature. This will give you a clearer idea of what nature is able to create, and why this country is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

In 15 days we promise to show you all the gems in the southwestern part of Greenland.    Click on the Itinerary tab to read more information about each day of the tour, and then reserve your place on this kayaking exploration of Tasermiut by clicking on Book Now .  Just one departure available!

Arriving in Greenland

Your grand fjord kayaking adventure starts by you arriving in South Greenland. On your flight to Greenland, you can enjoy a birds-eye view of the Greenland Ice Sheet and the nunataks peaking up through the white glacial landscape (if the sky is clear).

Your flight brings you to Narsarsuaq, where you will meet your experienced guide at the airport reception. From Narsarsuaq, you will sail Narsaq town on a one-hour zodiac boat tour. We will do an overnight stopover in Narsaq, so you can settle into the time zone and stock up on everything you might have forgotten before leaving your start destination.

Narsaq is a small charming town with approx. 1500 inhabitants, located on the shores of Tunulliarfik Fjord. Stroll through the city, enjoy the picturesque surroundings or head to bed early.

Dinner will take place at Kayak Hostel, where you also will stay overnight.

Fjord & City Sightseeing | Qaqortoq & Nanortalik

Your second day in Greenland brings you to the capital of South Greenland, Qaqortoq, and Greenland’s southern-most town, Nanortalik. On your way to the two destinations, you will be travelling through Erik The Reds Fjord and skerries on the outer coast.

South Greenland is renowned for its diverging climates, from the bare-rock surfaces and towering mountains of Tasermiut Fjord to the vegetated tundra, luscious green hills and agricultural friendly climate in Erik the Red’s Fjord. The journey of the next two days will be like travelling through two different worlds.

On your way to Qaqortoq, you will travel through the same routes as the Norse-Vikings, when they first arrived in the fjord approximately 1000 years ago. Here the Vikings established the first Greenlandic agriculture, that to this day dominates the fjord landscape. While travelling through these impressive landscapes of vegetated tundra, fields, mountains, waterfalls, you will also be travelling among voyaging icebergs, originating from the fjord’s several glaciers.

When arriving in Qaqortoq, you can stroll through town. Follow the stone carvings made by several artists of the north or visit the Qajaq club.

The tour continues by boat to Nanortalik. We will navigate along the outer coast through sets of archipelagoes, peninsulas and isthmuses. We will also do a midway stop to refuel in the small settlement, Alliutsup Paa.

Dinner will take place at the hostel in Nanortalik, where you will be sleeping. Dinner on your own.

Entering Tasermiut Fjord | Day 3 to 6

Your kayaking adventure can finally begin.  The next three days will be spent travelling through some the most pristine and unspoiled fjord landscapes, in the only presence of your co-travellers, guide and wildlife.

We leave Nanortalik by Zodiac boat and enter Tasermiut Fjord. The boat will drop us off by our camp near Kuusuaq River – one of the best places in South Greenland to fish for salmon and in some of Tasermiut’s most beautiful surroundings.

The camp is located not far from one of South Greenland’s only forests. From camp, you will set off, for the next few days, by kayak to explore Quingua Forest.  Quingua forest is not of an impressive size, it is a small set of dwarf birch trees living in one of the toughest environments in the world. When we are not kayaking, you can explore the Kuusuaq area in-depth.

Night in tents by Kuusuaq river.

Kayaking adventure

On this day, you are spending your day traveling through some of the most pristine and unspoiled fjord landscapes until day 7!

Mountain Treks & Greenland Ice Sheet | Day 7 to 11

The routes that you will be paddling are flexible and are dependent on the overall strength of the group, stream and weather. Your kayaking voyage through Tasermiut starts on the eastern shores, where we travel along sandy beaches and towering mountain walls. We paddle to our camp by the large unglaciated mountain, Ketil.

Highlights of these four days include the big walls of the south - Mount Ulamertorsuaq, Nalumasortoq and Ketil – and a visit to a glacier branch of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the Tasermiut Glacier.

These mountains tower all the way up, from 1830 meters to 2054 meters. To reach the mountains (not hike to the summit, but hike to a viewpoint) we will do treks. The treks are of an easy to modest difficulty and are each of about a two-hour duration. Each mountain has a characteristic shape. Mount. Ulamertorsuaq is often compared to be the Arctic version of Yosemite’s El Captain ( 1830 meters). Nalumasortoq is 2054 meters high and is shaped like an open book, each side of the book is 900 meters tall. Mount Ketil is shaped like a pyramid.

The treks do not only offer you a fantastic birds-eye view of the area but also an incredible walkthrough of Tasermiuts beautiful and diverging climate and ruins from the Norse Vikings – you will be exploring the ruins of the Norse-Viking’s monastery. Besides trekking, you will also be kayaking to a glacier branch of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the Tasermiut Glacier. It is quite the sight to kayaking towards a massive glacier.

By the 11 th day, we start making our way back to Nanortalik, paddling along the eastern shores.

Your diet these four days consist of Greenlandic commodities, in the form of fish, mussels, mushrooms, blueberries, crowberries and whatever the spectacular land can give.

Exploring adventure

On this day, you are spending your day traveling through glaciers, mountains, and other breathtaking views until day 12!

Returning to civilization

Depending on you and the group's energy and the weather, we start the day either by sailing by boat or paddling by kayak. The first destination on our way back to Nanortalik, is the Settlement Tasiusaq, from where we transfer by boat to Nanortalik.

After arriving in Nanortalik, the day is at your leisure. Enjoy the surroundings, bathe and visit the local museum, Museum of Inuit Culture.

Tonight’s dinner is not included in the tour, but dinner can be cooked at the hostel or enjoyed in Nanortalik’s restaurant. Overnight stay in hostel.

Bathing in the thermal hotspring on Uunartoq Island

On your 13 th day of this kayaking adventure, you will once again be making your way through South Greenland to Qaqortoq by boat.

En route, we will stop by Uunartoq Island to bathe in the soothing, natural hot springs. While soaking in the warm water, you can enjoy a spectacular view of voyaging icebergs and mountains – you won’t get better entertainment.

When arriving in Qaqortoq you can settle into the hostel and explore the town on your own.

Hiking to Tasiusaq Bay

We transfer by helicopter to Narsarsuaq. From Narsarsuaq, we will travel across the fjord by boat to Qassiarsuk. Qassiarsuk is a small agricultural community with roads leading to several sheep farming stations. The beautifully located town was also favoured by the Norse-Vikings, as it was their capital.

From Qassiarsuk, we will hike on a dirt road to Tasiusaq Bay – a place only inhabited by three families who live of their farmland. The hike has a duration of 2 ½ hours at a comfortable pace and takes place in the most amazing surroundings. Arriving in the area, we will hike to a small summit from where we can overlook the iceberg-filled fjord, Sermilik.

It is possible to do an optional kayaking tour among icebergs for an additional fee.  Tasiusaq has a small bay, with ideal conditions for kayaking among icebergs.

We stay overnight at Tasiusaq Hostel.

Before departing for your flight to either Iceland or Denmark, we make our way back to Qassiarsuk by foot and visit the Norse-Viking ruins of Brattahlid. We will do a walk-through of the open-air museum, displaying tales of the past and stories of the Norse-Vikings settlement in Qassiarsuk and South Greenland. The museum holds two reconstructions of a Norse-Viking and Inuit household, that both display the harsh and modest living conditions of the past.

We return to Narsarsuaq by boat and bid you farewell at the airport.

Additional Information

This, together with the stability of our double kayaks, makes the previous experience in kayaking not essential, although desirable. However, skilled kayakers who know how to inuit roll may choose to use a single kayak on this trip.

  • The tour will only be confirmed if there are between 6 and 12 participants.
  • Trips to Greenland are always subject to weather conditions. Delays and flight cancellations can happen. Therefore we strongly recommend you to buy travel insurance in the country of residence that would cover any additional travel expenses, should your flights be delayed or cancelled due to weather.

South Greenland: Exploring the Tasermiut Fjord

Trip Report by : Erik Egir

Adventurers : Erik Egir, Kjell Bäcklund & Oskar Hjertstedt

Everyone should go to Greenland!

Okay, maybe not everyone . But, everyone who wants a truly wild and isolated wilderness experience should go to Greenland. If you’re reading this, you should plan to go, and soon. Even the air up here feels different. If you respect our beautiful planet and all the people and cultures we share it with, you’ll love Greenland.

We just spent a week backpacking and packrafting through Tasermiut Fjord in southern Greenland. Our time in the fjord was even more of an adventure than our journey to the remote village that was our base camp. But, getting to base camp was certainly an adventure, too. And to think people live up here all year round!

South Greenland: Tasermiut Fjord with Erik Egir and Kokopelli Rogue Packraft

It all started with a Facebook post. “Anyone up for a trip to Greenland?” my friend Kjell asked two years ago. That was the day I signed up for the trip of a lifetime.

I had done plenty of adventures before, in the northern parts of Sweden and Norway near my home. I’m no stranger to climbing, kayaking, trekking, and skiing. But, what we were about to experience was on a completely different scale.

Kjell took the lead in planning the trip. With five previous trips to Greenland, he was the obvious leader. He was our Greenland guru. Over the years, Kjell had seen the Tasermuit Fjord from a distance. But, it was just too far away for most hikers to approach. But we were formulating a plan to get to this remote spot.

The climbers out there probably know about Ketil--the Yosemite of Greenland. It towers higher than 100 meters and is a sheer west-facing granite wall. Ketil is considered to be one of the most challenging big walls on Earth.

Ketil would be where we’d start our trip in the Tasermuit Fjord. We bought maps and poured over them. Over several beers in our hometown Pub in Linköping, Sweden, we realized this wasn’t just going to be a hike. Backpacking an inflatable raft in with us would allow us to go farther and experience more.

This is where Kokopelli Packrafts entered the picture.

Exploring Tasermiut Fjord in a Kokopelli Rogue R-Deck packraft

We had seen others use packrafts on backpacking trips, and looking at the maps we saw the potential to add this new dimension to our trip. We scanned the market of inflatable boats and were stoked when we found a video of this cool dude showing off the new Kokopelli Rogue-R Deck while drinking coffee. We were sold.

Soon, we’d be drinking coffee in places only our feet and a packraft can take us.

Taking a rest stop on the edge of the Tasermiut Fjord with a cup of coffee

We planned a trip to test our new Kokopelli packraft in a remote location next to Sarek National Park in Sweden. That’s another story altogether. But, we definitely got some experience with portable rafts. We learned how to pack our gear with the packraft, which takes time to figure out. Also, we got some unplanned practice in repairing the inflatable boat in the field after I got a 6in tear on the bottom. Tyvek sheathing tape solved that problem!

Now, we were ready for prime time. We were ready for Greenland.

On a hot autumn morning, we boarded a plane in Copenhagen that took us to Narsusaq airport in Greenland. From Europe, this 4-hour flight is the only direct flight into Greenland. Did you know Greenland is governed by Denmark? Well, now you do.

From Narsusaq, we went south by boat for another 5 hours to the village of Nanortalik , population 1,300. Nanortalik means “ Place of Polar Bears, ” even southern Greenland is pretty far north!

Village of Nanortalik meaning a place of Polar Bears - South Greenland

In Nanortalik, we geared up with food, gas/benzin, and some other miscellaneous supplies. Then, we looked for a local outfitter to take us by boat for the final 2 hours of our approach to Tasermiut Fjord. We met Henrik of Nanortalik boat charter on the docks, Henrik is the man! He gave us a cup of coffee and took us the rest of the way up the fjord. That was one crazy beautiful boat trip.

While he was shuttling us up the fjord, Henrik filled us in on all the info only the locals have. We asked about polar bears, the town is named for them, after all. To our relief, Henrick told us seeing a polar bear “is like winning the lottery.” Okay, we were relieved and a little disappointed. According to Henrik, they don't come this far south much. There hasn’t been an accident in Nanortalik for 50 years.

And with that reassurance, he left us on the shore of Klosterdalen staring up at huge granite peaks. We inflated our packrafts and started the real adventure.

Paddling the Tasermiut Fjord in a Kokpelli Rogue Packraft

The feeling of those first paddle strokes on the glacial water was so sick! I will never, ever, forget that moment. To be on this adventure at that moment was just…special.

We were really into the wild here . I was the captain of a boat, so small on this beautiful planet earth. There were these enormous mountains towering over us, reminding me exactly how small we are. The whole experience was really surreal.

Side note, be sure to read some stories about Erik Röde before you take your trip here. He led the expedition to found the first settlement in Greenland before the Inuits came down from the north. It sure helped me appreciate this place even more. Setting up camp on the shore of the fjord, I felt a little bit of what life could have been like for those Norse Vikings and Inuits when they arrived here almost a century ago

Camping in bivys on the shores of Tasermiut Fjord - South Greenland

We walked and paddled in our Kokopelli backpacking rafts for about 10 hours every day. The terrain was rough most of the time. There are no trails out here, not even animal tracks to follow. It’s just you, the map, and a compass. We would walk until there was nothing walkable left, then inflate our rafts and paddle farther. When we could hike again, we packed away the packrafts and hiked on.

Okay, when we got back to shore we didn’t always immediately pack away our packrafts. They make great portable mattresses, and paddling through the fjord was hard work .

Taking a rest on the shores of Tasermiut Fjord on our Kokopelli packrafts

And we fished, too. The first Arctic Char we caught was from the shores of Aappilattoq . Oh my god, it was delicious! When you come up this way, be sure to bring a fishing rod. You won’t regret carrying the extra gear when you’re looking at a delicious fish like this one for dinner.

Artic Char grilled over an open fire in South Greenland Tasermiut Fjord

Hands down, the Arctic Char was the best dinner of the trip!

It’s impossible to write about this experience in detail, especially with my limited English. But really, no one could do justice in retelling a trip like this with words alone. You have to experience this place for yourself.

Keeping warm in the Tasermiut Fjord - South Greenland with a roaring campfire

On the boat back to Nanortalik, they told us that a Polar Bear had been spotted two weeks before at the place we just were the day before. We didn’t end up winning the lottery with a Polar Bear sighting, but we came pretty close, apparently!

And as the ice melts from climate change, the bears may start showing up in southern Greenland more often. They’re going to need to find food somewhere. Odds are they come down this way more often looking for it.

If you’ve read this far, you should go to Greenland. You will not regret this trip.

Thanks for reading. And feel free to contact me with questions about this trip or if you have questions about other adventures in Sweden and Norway.

Now go out and explore, and bring your packraft !

Yours, Erik

From this viewing point we can see the south face of the Ketil and the north face of the Ulamertorssuaq. In the evening we have time for fishing and picking mussels. The camp also offers a fantastic view to the west face of the Ulamertorssuaq as the sun set strokes the rock with the last rays of sun. Accommodation in tents.

Day 10. Nanortalik

Navigation back to the picturesque Nanortalik, the southernmost town of the country, which has some 2,300 inhabitants. Visit to the Museum of Inuit Culture and Traditions, probably the best museum in the whole country. Free time to visit the town, go shopping, explore the hunters market or have a drink in a town “where there are polar bears” –at least that is the meaning of its name–. Hostel accommodation.

Day 11. Alluitsup Paa and Qaqortoq, capital of South Greenland

Transfer by boat to Alluitsup Paa, a small hunting and fishing village located in front to the open sea. Time to take a stroll around the city, while you enjoy the beauty of its colourful buildings and the awe-inspiring landscapes. Explore on your own the museum, the fur shops, the traditional kayak club, the church or the only fountain in the whole country. Hostel accommodation.

Day 12. Igaliku & Qassiarsuk UNESCO World Heritage . Qoorooq glacier

Our first goal is the pontoon of Itilleq, where an easy hike to cross the Path of the Kings begins. Our destination is the idyllic Igaliku, a small Inuit settlement inhabited by no more than 40 people. Igaliku, home of the ruins of Gardar (religious capital of Viking Greenland), is famous for being the most beautiful settlement in Greenland. The area is recently declared part of the Unesco World Heritage List.

In the afternoon, on our way to Qassiarsuk, we will visit the Qooroq Fjord, one of the most active glaciers in southern Greenland, navigating to the area where iceberg density will make it impossible to carry on… one of Greenland’s unforgettables. Night at the Leif Eriksson Hostel in Qassiarsuk.

Day 13. Tasiusaq, the kayaking among icebergs spot

Hiking to Tasiusaq farms, next to Sermilik fjord which is almost always blocked by the icebergs coming from Eqaloruutsit glacier. After lunch, we could go fishing arctic salmon or for a walk in the region.

Optional: Kayak excursion in the “Iceberg Bay”, a 2 hour kayaking trip for beginners among icebergs in one of the safest and nicest spots in southern Greenland (85€ , minimum 2 participants).

As we get back to Qassiarsuk, old Brattahlid, guided tour of the Viking ruins of Brattahlid, learning the history of the arrival of Eric the Red from Iceland at this small settlement in 985. Of particular interest are the reconstructions of a Viking house (spacious but cold) and an inuit dwelling (small but warmer), transporting us back in time to the harsh conditions in which these people lived and it definitely shows us how the Inuit knew how to adapt better to the progressive cooling of the climate.

This Norse and Greenlandic core farming area were in 2017 inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List under the title Kujataa Greenland: A Norse and Inuit farming landscape on the Edge of the Ice Cap.

Accommodation at the Leif Eriksson Hostel.

Then, after a short transfer by car, we will walk through Flower Valley until we can see the Kiattut glacier and the landscape around it, with superb panoramic view of the Polar Ice Cap and its Nunataks (floating landmarks on the ice sheet). Flower Valley is one of the most renowned excursion in all Greenland. Farewell dinner will be greenlandic dinner with traditional Inuit products: fish, whale, seal, caribou, etc. Night at the Leif Eriksson Hostel.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
