The Trip episode 3 review: Holbeck Ghyll

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s post-modern, understated comedy, The Trip, continues to impress. Here’s Mark’s review of episode three, Holbeck Ghyll…

3. Holbeck Ghyll

While there were fewer overt moments to chortle at this week, The Trip continues to deliver. Whether it’s Coogan’s self-doubt, Brydon’s unbridled joy or pitch-perfect impressions, this is a series that has got into its stride quickly.

This week more than any other, the little things – a facial expression here, a seemingly off-the-cuff remark there – provided viewers with everything they need to know about the general thrust of the show. And what that meant this week was a deeper look at Coogan’s public persona.

He’s set himself up here as the man who longs for more, as a man consistently fed up with a world he feels owes him more for the hard work and successes of his past. He feels a pressure of living up to his past success with his post-Partridge work, and that everything is bound to be compared with that character.

Ad – content continues below

It’s great, then – not to say brave – that Coogan is quite prepared to play on that persona to its fullest here. In this episode in particular, Coogan’s mass of neuroses comes to the fore as it is wonderfully woven throughout the show, building towards a poignant finale.

Things start just as before, with the pair travelling towards Samuel Coleridge’s home, Greta Hall, before they move on to eat at Holbeck Ghyll. Throughout the course of this episode, however, the format changed slightly as the focus was less on the conversations during the meal and more on the Brydon-Coogan relationship on the road.

This helped the flow of the episode, and the series in general, and also brought Brydon to the fore. Anthony Hopkins impression? Check. Small man in a box? Check. Dreadful Liverpudlian impression? Absolutely. Delivering all the laughs while Coogan took on the drama, he demonstrated what a true comedic master he is – charming, intelligent and always funny.

He also grabbed many of the best lines of the week. “Top Up? Yes, I like drinking wine!” would, in almost any other format, hold no humour whatsoever, so why is it that when offered up here, it’s laugh-out loud funny? That’s down to the general understated nature of the show, obviously, which helps give otherwise throwaway lines so much more gravitas.

Another example was the look he gave Coogan when he suggested how life would be were he to live with him for six months. The disdain and genuine displeasure was encapsulated superbly in one long stare and it’s moments like this which keep me coming back for more.

It’s also worth noting at this stage how important Winterbottom’s use of music for the show is. At certain moments, he interjects the scenery and pacing of the show with some lovely musical choices which lift the landscapes and palpable tension between the pair to a level almost worthy of Hollywood.

He is an astute director, and every week I can’t help but wonder how poor this could have been in a lesser man’s hands.

Which brings me nicely on to the treatment of Coogan throughout the episode. There was a brief conversation last night which was clearly intended to sum up not only the episode, but also the series to date. During one of their frequent arguments/banter, Brydon notes that they will have essentially the same conversation in every restaurant, with Coogan then stating that they will invariably end up arguing in some fashion.

This is, of course, is exactly what happens, as comparisons with Coleridge’s own life are made with Coogan’s, leading him to get very aggravated as it dawns on him that since he hit 40, his life hasn’t been as much fun.

Apparently weighing on his mind during the rest of the episode, we see various moments of him trying to get back what he feels he has apparently lost – shouting out “Aha!” among the hills was an obvious reference to a bygone era, but other moments of self-reflection were also apparent. I particularly liked, as I have done every episode, the final scene of the episode.

As Brydon’s popularity and impression of a man in a box succeeds in diffusing a very awkward situation at a country home (“Old people seek out aggravation”, cries Coogan) the shot of Coogan trying to do the impression himself behind closed doors, followed by a soulful look in the mirror tells all you needed to know about this episode and the drama underneath the surface. It was, quite simply, brilliant.

Next week, a photoshoot promises to bring yet more tensions to the surface but I’ll be looking out for the little looks and little chats. They make this series the gem it is.

Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon star in this improvised comedy about two actors on a culinary tour of the north of England. Steve is commissioned to review half a dozen restaurants for a Sunday newspaper and plans the trip with his American girlfriend - only to face the prospect of a week of meals-for-one after they separate. So Steve calls old friend Rob to accompany him, and the pair find themselves debating the big questions of life over a series of delightful dishes. They begin their Trip at the Inn at Whitewell, in the beautiful Trough of Bowland, where a mix-up on the booking means they have to share a room.

Steve and Rob enjoy a taster menu at L'enclume in the Cumbrian village of Cartmel as they continue their culinary tour of the north of England, reviewing restaurants for a Sunday newspaper.

Continuing their journey of the north of England, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon travel to Holbeck Ghyll; a luxury country house hotel in the lake district, where they once again sit down to eat together and ponder their place in the world.

Next stop is Hipping Hall, a 17th century house, steeped in history and now host to Steve and Rob. We learn more about the pair as they dine together for the fourth time on their culinary tour of the north.

As their journey nears its end, Steve and Rob again reflect on their lives, careers and relationships over the dinner table - this time at The Yorke Arms in Yorkshire's Nidderdale valley.

The last stop on Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon's tour of northern restaurants is The Angel Inn at Hetton, where they once again mull over life’s big questions and draw the trip to a poignant close.

Adam Scott as Ben Wyatt and Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope in Parks and Recreation

Fall in Love With These Ben and Leslie Episodes of ‘Parks and Recreation’

Image of Rachel Leishman

There is no love quite like that of Ben Wyatt and Leslie Knope. The couple from Parks and Recreation captured hearts with their slow appreciation and deep love for each other, cementing them as one of the best TV couples ever.

Leslie (Amy Poehler) was a government employee who struggled in her love life until Ben Wyatt (Adam Scott) arrived at the end of season 2. At first, Leslie hated him because he was trying to cut the budget in Pawnee. But these two nerds quickly bonded over their love of history and public service, and watching that love grow is one of my favorite things in this world.

Have you watched Parks and Recreation and just not gotten it? Or specifically, glazed over Ben and Leslie? Or maybe you’ve never seen the show at all! Well, I am here to give you a crash course of episodes to watch that highlight the love story between Ben Wyatt and Leslie Knope!

“Road Trip” Season 3, Episode 14

ben, leslie, and chris all in a car together in parks and rec

The lead-up to “Road Trip” sees Ben and Leslie in a real “will they, won’t they” moment. But Chris Traeger (Rob Lowe) has a policy about relationships between his employees, and Ben and Leslie care about their jobs almost as much as they care for each other. When they’re forced to drive to Indianapolis together, the two have an honest conversation about the town’s hair (Ben is talking about Leslie, obviously). Meanwhile, Leslie keeps trying to tone down the romance with a podcast about the history of ladders.

The kiss at the end of this episode is still one of my all-time favorite TV kisses.

“Smallest Park” Season 4, Episode 8

ben and leslie kissing by a bench

Ben wants to be done working with Leslie on projects because it is too hard to work together after their break-up. Leslie doesn’t want to lose their connection and thus a battle over the smallest park ensues.

Did I cut out all the Ben and Leslie fighting episodes on this list? Obviously. But their brief break-up leads to “Smallest Park” and a brilliant moment between them. I would recommend watching “The Treaty” just to hear Leslie scream “What are you gonna do without tides, Peru?” but “Smallest Park” is still an episode that hits.

“Bowling for Votes” Season 4, Episode 13

ben and leslie looking shocked while standing in a bowling alley

Is there anything hotter than your very sweet and often shy boyfriend punching a man in the face for disrespecting you? Leslie Knope was campaigning for a seat on city council and was confronted by a jerk who just plain didn’t like her. So of course, she planned a bowling event to prove him wrong.

Ben was the good boyfriend who told her multiple times to let it go, but when the man disrespected her, all bets were off. And Leslie made out with him for punching that guy in the face.

“Win, Lose, or Draw” Season 4, Episode 22

ben and leslie with their foreheads touching

One of Ben and Leslie’s best qualities as a couple is their ability to let the other one shine. Ben was Leslie’s campaign manager, but when Jennifer Barkley (Kathryn Hahn) offers Ben a job in Washington D.C., Leslie realizes they will both succeed despite going long distance. Those little moments of selflessness that they share make their love something you yearn for.

Leslie wins her election, and Ben decides to go to D.C., but the two are there for each other no matter what.

“Halloween Surprise” Season 5, Episode 5

ben wyatt proposing to leslie knope in an empty house

If you’re not proposing to me when you’re not even supposed to be in the same state as me AND in the living room of our new home, what are you doing ? Ben was up for another campaign job which would keep him away from Pawnee. But my baby boy is a romantic at heart and changed his mind.

Leslie sees him in their new home, and says “What are you doing?” and then starts sobbing as he gets down on one knee. She also asks him to stop so that she can commit the moment to memory. This tear-jerking proposal is definitely one of the best television proposals ever.

“Leslie and Ben” Season 5, Episode 14

ben and leslie getting married in front of all of their friends on parks and recreation

There’s no “Best of Ben and Leslie” list without the wedding episode. Ben is sick of waiting to plan their perfect wedding, and the couple decide to marry on the spot during a fundraising gala. When Jeremy Jamm ruins their plans, the duo decide to get married in the Parks and Rec offices instead.

Through the love of their friends and everyone working together (I especially love Anne’s memo dress), Ben and Leslie have that perfect wedding. Their vows included the most important thing they have ever said to each other: “I love you and I like you.” FUN FACT: TMS Editor Chelsea used those same vows at her wedding!

“Partridge” Season 5, Episode 17

Adam Scott as Ben Wyatt crying over the Price is Right

Is this on the list because it is one of my all-time favorite Parks and Recreation episodes? Yes, it is. Ben returns to his hometown, Partridge, to accept the key to the city after he thinks they’ve forgiven him for Ice Town. The trip ends up being a mess because he gets kidney stones and it turns out that the new mayor just wanted to make fun of him. Luckily, Leslie is there to defend Ben and protect him.

These two are always each other’s biggest supporters and this episode is no different. Pretty amazing.

“Second Chunce” Season 6, Episode 10

ben and leslie at the lock bridge in paris

This episode sees Ben trying to support Leslie after she loses the recall vote. But it’s the final moments of “Second Chunce” that make this such a special episode. It is, after all, where my Parks and Recreation tattoo comes from. Ben takes Leslie to Paris to help distract her from losing her seat on the City Council. The love and support she gets from her friends brings some well-earned happiness and a reminder that there’s a big world outside of Pawnee.

Leslie ends the episode in voice-over, saying “It times of stress or moments of transition, sometimes it can feel like the whole world is closing in on you. When that happens, you should close your eyes, take a deep breath, listen to the people who love you when they give you advice, and remember what really matters. And if you have the ability to go to Paris, by all means, go to Paris.”

“One in 8,000” Season 6, Episode 20

ben with his head in his hands and leslie looking excited in a hospital

Ben and Leslie as parents are my dream! When it was revealed that Leslie was pregnant, I was so happy to see the series reference season 2, episode 13, “The Set Up,” where Leslie goes on a blind date with an MRI technician (played by Poehler’s then-husband Will Arnett) who quips that Leslie’s hips are built for birthing multiples. That mention comes into play here, when it’s revealed that Leslie is pregnant with triplets! This episode is less about their joy of being parents and more about Leslie recognizing what Ben needs from her and vice versa.

A stressed-out Ben screaming about money and Leslie laughing at him is ingrained in my mind because it proves how well these two know each other. I just really love this episode.

“One Last Ride” Season 7, Episode 12-13

ben and leslie walking arm in arm down the hallway in parks and recreation

Ben Wyatt did the most romantic thing he could ever do in “One Last Ride” when he told all their friends that Leslie was the one running for governor. I remember watching the finale of Parks and Recreation for the first time and thinking, “Oh, I’m not crying. This is weird.” I immediately became a wreck when it got to Ben and Leslie’s story.

Watching Ben realize that Leslie would give up her dream for him and turning around to give her the shot is the perfect note to end the series.

Did Jubal Get Closure on ‘International’ Trip? ‘FBI’ Star Jeremy Sisto Explains Why He Couldn’t

Jeremy Sisto as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine — 'FBI: International' Season 3 Episode 8

Spoiler Alert

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for  FBI: International Season 3 Episode 8 “Remove the Compromise.”]

After going after the cartel responsible for his girlfriend Rina’s death on FBI , does Jubal ( Jeremy Sisto ) have any sense of closure with the latest International episode? Not necessarily.

Upon hearing there’s an ongoing investigation into the Vargas family—Antonio ( David Zayas ) is behind bars —Jubal hops a flight to Budapest. Once there, he’s tested with the CIA planning to just take out the nephew about to take over (and anyone else at a weapons sale) with a missile. When it becomes clear that the CIA doesn’t care about collateral damage, however, Scott ( Luke Kleintank ) insists on putting himself in the line of fire and Jubal eventually joins him, resulting in a shootout—yes, Jubal in the field, in the middle of the action, something we don’t usually see!

In the end, the nephew survives (and will be locked up in Manhattan), the drugs and weapons are secured, and a corrupt agent dies. They put a dent in the cartel’s operations. Jubal admits to Scott that he wanted revenge, not justice, and had been hoping the CIA would do the dirty work for him. He was tempted to let the nephew die until he thought of what Rina stood for. Jubal also still hasn’t been able to wrap his head around Rina’s death. But does he have any sense of closure now?

Luke Kleintank as Special Agent Scott Forrester and Jeremy Sisto as Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine — 'FBI: International' Season 3 Episode 8

Nelly Kiss/CBS

“I don’t know, closure is an interesting thing. I don’t think closure actually is going to come from any kind of vengeance,” Sisto tells TV Insider. “I think to some degree he’s already achieved closure. As awful as it was and as much as he really loved Rina. She represented a very specific time in his life. They saw each other through the end of their marriages. They got together when he was still in the throes of his alcoholism and then only reconnected fairly recently and started to get into this relationship. And it was getting serious and real, but it wasn’t like they were married for 10 years. It wasn’t like their lives were so ingrained.”

Rather, her death “cut short something, a life together that was still to be written, and it’s so extremely tragic,” explains Sisto. He calls that loss “a pain that will always be there. I don’t think there’s much closure to get. Closure seems to be something that has to come when your life has changed in such a way that you’re really having to evolve into a new person in order to move on.”

For the most part on  FBI , Jubal stays in the JOC, but he’s right in the thick of it in this  International episode. Getting in on the action was fun for Sisto. “I was able to bring my son, who’s 12, over and we had night shoots every night and we were out in an abandoned Russian military base and there were 30 stunt guys all getting shot and I’m running around with a gun,” he recalls. “That stuff is really fun to watch and it takes a long time to shoot and I like it. It’s cool. It feels like I’m a ride at Universal or something.”

'FBI' Scores Major Renewal, 'International' & 'Most Wanted' Also Returning

'FBI' Scores Major Renewal, 'International' & 'Most Wanted' Also Returning

Jubal has been in the field before—and was for years—and so “I think it comes naturally to him to some degree,” says Sisto. “And to some degree, I think he misses it. There’s definitely excitement there, but at the same time, it’s more complicated.” Because he’s an addict, being in the position that being in the field puts a person in—”Your life is on the line, you’re going through moments that could it all”—it can “bring up certain personal vulnerabilities,” he notes. “And so it definitely takes a toll.”

“If I, Jeremy, were actually in the situation, I would be a wreck for a long time, but Jubal’s got a strong constitution,” he continues. “So his main emotional challenge that comes from this is seeing him act in a way that doesn’t go with his values, his integrity. He has a really strong sense of integrity, and it does not fit well with him when he operates outside of that.”

In that last conversation with Scott, Jubal mentions that Rina used to say to sing in the show, to start the day off on a good note, and he still does it every morning. So what’s Jubal’s go-to song? “It’s gotta be ‘Careless Whisper,'” Sisto says with a laugh. “I like ‘Careless Whisper.’ Let’s go with that. It’s gotta be something ‘80s.”
