Star Trek: Picard Season 3: Release Date And Other Things We Know About The Series

Here's what we know about the final season.

Jean-Luc Picard in Picard on Paramount+

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 will be the final season of the Paramount+ series, and a farewell to one of the franchise’s greatest characters. Fans are no doubt excited to see Patrick Stewart ’s curtain call in his series, and while we’re still in the dark on some details about this final season, there are some details we have learned ahead of its release.

Below are a lot of key things Star Trek fans will be interested in if they’re hoping to check out Picard Season 3. The below will likely convince many to hang onto those Paramount+ subscriptions for its premiere, assuming they weren’t planning to already.

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Season 3 Premieres In February And Will Be Ten Episodes Long

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard will arrive on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16, 2023.

Star Trek: Picard Season 1 and 2 were both ten episodes in length, and the series will continue that trend for the final season, with episodes arriving weekly (on Thursday) following the Season 3 premiere. This isn’t anything unusual really, as all modern Trek shows have resorted to the “less is more” strategy when it comes to modern seasons. While this will likely mean the odds of a modern Trek series exceeding one-hundred episodes are slim, more money is spent on visual effects, and serialized stories stay on task when telling their tales.

Jonathan Frakes as Riker in Star Trek: Picard

Many Cast Members Of The Next Generation Are Returning

One of the most exciting things about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 is that Patrick Stewart will finally deliver on his promise of reuniting with most of the cast of The Next Generation . Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes , Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton , Brent Spiner , and Michael Dorn are back together again for an adventure that should be a send-off for the iconic cast. Obviously, this also presents an opportunity for the series to answer some major questions that TNG never did, but it remains to be seen how much of that will be happening.

Evan Evagora as Elnor in Star Trek: Picard

Previous Characters From Seasons 1 And 2 Won’t Return

While Star Trek: Picard will add a lot of stars from The Next Generation to its final season, it’s coming at the cost of much of the cast who appeared in Seasons 1 and 2. Allison Pill, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Orla Brady won’t be around in this new adventure . Even Wil Wheaton, who had a surprise cameo as Wesley Crusher , won’t be around in the final season. It’s a bit of a bummer, but with only so much time to tell the story, it’s understandable why the series cleared the way for the TNG cast.

Amanda Plummer in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

The First Trailer Revealed Amanda Plummer Is Playing The Main Villain

Star Trek: Picard has tapped Amanda Plummer for its main villain for Season 3 and there’s an interesting history there. Before we get into that, check out Plummer below, in a trailer that shows she'll be a formidable foe for Picard and friends:

CINEMABLEND NEWSLETTER

Your Daily Blend of Entertainment News

For those unaware Amanda Plummer’s father, Christopher Plummer played a villain in the final Star Trek movie with the original series cast, The Undiscovered Country . Now, his daughter will play the villain in what’s believed to be the final adventure for The Next Generation crew. Not much is known about her character, Captain Vadic, but the brief footage we’ve seen of her seems to indicate she’s a worthy adversary to Picard and his crew. Hopefully, she’s not too formidable, though, as I’d hate to see this final get-together end on a sour note.

Worf on Star Trek: Picard

Worf Is A Pacifist

During Star Trek: The Next Generation , Worf always sought to honor his Klingon heritage and even instill those values in his son. So then, it was quite a surprise to learn in the above trailer for Picard Season 3 that Worf prefers pacifism to combat. One may use many adjectives to describe Klingons, but pacifist is about the furthest from what anyone would say about them. Hell, even those Klingon monks tried to have Captain Pike killed, so I’m definitely invested in this storyline and what led to Worf’s big decision.

Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+

Seven Of Nine Is Officially In Starfleet, And Could Possibly Link Up With Janeway

Star Trek: Picard has long established that Seven of Nine joined up with the Fenris Rangers, but what we didn’t learn until Season 2 was that she was rejected entry into Starfleet. Despite her years of service on the Voyager with Captain Janeway,  Starfleet didn’t accept the Borg into its ranks, but we’ve since learned that Admiral Picard changed that in Season 3. It’s confirmed that Seven of Nine will be an official Starfleet officer , though not quite a captain, unfortunately. Maybe that’s something that will happen by the end of the season?

Another interesting tidbit is that there's a possibility we might see Kate Mulgrew reprise her role as Janeway in live-action, considering her ties to Seven. While nothing is confirmed, Alex Kurtzman did reveal there were discussions about bringing Mulgrew back as Janeway to live-action, and a recent Picard tie-in comic showed Seven talking with her mentor. We can't say we know for certain whether or not Mulgrew will appear, but there appears to be some compelling evidence suggesting she could cameo.

Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard

Fans Will Get “Emotionally Naked” Scenes Between Jean-Luc And Beverly

Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher are the biggest “what if” couple of Star Trek . The Next Generation flirted with the idea of them getting together throughout its run, but the complicated dynamics of their relationship always got in the way of things. Picard Season 3 presents an opportunity for the two to revisit their relationship. Patrick Stewart mentioned in an interview with Den of Geek that he felt he and co-star Gates McFadden’s characters had some of their most “ emotionally naked ” scenes to date, which seems to indicate there will be some talk about a romance that will be, or even once was.

Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: Picard

Geordi Received A Promotion, And We’ll Meet His Daughters

Geordi LaForge is finally getting his due in Star Trek: Picard Season 3, as we learned in a character reveal trailer ahead of the season that he’ll have the rank of Commodore in Starfleet. Geordi noted in one trailer that his time in Starfleet made him a better father, a better friend, and a better man. Fans will get to see the product of LaForge being a better father as his daughters will appear in Season 3 as well. I, for one, am absolutely thrilled to see the “next generation” of the LaForge family in action, especially since LeVar Burton’s actual daughter Mica will portray his daughter Alandra.

Brent Spiner as Lore in Star Trek: Picard

Classic TNG Villains Will Appear

Star Trek: Picard ’s Season 3 trailer shocked fans with the re-emergence of two very popular villains who will appear in the final adventure with Picard and crew. Actor Daniel Davis will reprise his role as Moriarty who first appeared during The Next Generation . As for Brent Spiner, with Data dead, he’ll don the role of his evil brother Lore, who was also believed to be dead. Personally, I’ve wondered if Lore might find redemption in Picard Season 3 , but we’ll just have to wait and watch the season to see if that ends up happening.

Star Trek: Picard will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16th. Tune in then and on the following Thursdays for what should be a great adventure, and hopefully, a proper farewell to the crew of The Next Generation .

Titan, as well as hints at the central storyline, which appears to involve the old bridge crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D rallying together to support Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), who seems to find herself in mortal peril.

The 10-episode season of “Picard” stars Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on “The Next Generation,” and follows Picard in his next — and likely final — chapter. Along with Stewart and McFadden, LeVar Burton (as Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (as Worf), Jonathan Frakes (as Will Riker), Marina Sirtis (as Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (in an undisclosed role), Jeri Ryan (as Seven of Nine) and Michelle Hurd (as Raffi Musiker) round out the cast.

During a panel conversation with Ryan and Hurd, Stewart pushed back on calling the season as just a “reunion,” saying that the storyline is far more weighty and serious than what that might imply.

Terry Matalas serves as executive producer and showrunner for this season of “Picard,” along with executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Stewart, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoski and Dylan Massin. “Picard” hails from CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”

Oscar-nominated actor Carol Kane (“The Princess Bride,” “Hunters”) is joining “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for its second season, for the recurring role as Pelia. According to an official release from Paramount+, the character is “highly educated and intelligent” and “suffers no fools.” The character is likely meant to replace the Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak), who died giving his life to save his colleagues in Episode 9 of the first season.

“She adds a color to ‘Star Trek’ that no one has never seen before,” Rebecca Romijn said during the announcement. “It is incredible and we are thrilled that she is part of our team.”

Romijn announced the casting during a conversation with “Strange New Worlds” costars Celia Rose Gooding, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia and Babs Olusanmokun. They also premiered an exclusive clip from Season 2, which focuses on Navia’s character, Lt. Ortegas ; watch below.

“Star Trek: Discovery”

In anticipation of current flagship series “Star Trek: Discovery’s” fifth season, cast member Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) gave fans a behind the scenes tour of the show’s set. During the tour he ran into other members of the “Discovery” crew, including Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) and Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets). Watch the video below.

In addition, the presenters released a first look photo of the fifth season, which is scheduled to premiere early 2023. Check it out below.

“Star Trek: Lower Decks”

Out of a panel for the animated comedy series “Lower Decks,” Newsome (Beckett Mariner), Noël Wells (D’Vana Tendi) and Thompkins unveiled an exclusive clip from Episode 8 of the ongoing third season, set to air Oct. 13. Watch below.

During the panel, Newsome, Wells and Thompkins spoke about working together on the animated series and bonding with the voice acting cast. Newsome, who will appear in a “Strange New Worlds” live action episode, teased an episode that will follow up on one of the franchise’s films.

“Give us a live-action movie, you cowards!” Newsome said during the panel.

“Star Trek: Prodigy”

The announcement of Campbell’s appearance on “Prodigy” was made during a panel with Kate Mulgrew (Hologram Kathryn Janeway) and Brett Gray (Dal) accompanied by a clip from the series, that also featured the transformation of the beloved character Murf. You can see the clip below.

Along with the main cast of Mulgrew, Gray, Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok), Campbell joins previously announced guest voice actors Robert Beltran (reprising his “Star Trek: Voyager” role as Capt. Chakotay), Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia) and Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum).

Executive producers and showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman developed the series.

Tribute to Nichelle Nichols

Near the close of the livestream, “Star Trek” stars gathered together for a tribute to original series cast member Nichelle Nichols, who passed away in July at 89.

Nichols, who portrayed communications officer Uhura on the first three seasons of the show and in six film sequels to the series, was one of the first major Black actors on a major television series, and one of the first portrayed in a role of authority. Her impact was so notable that Martin Luther King Jr. famously convinced her to stay on board the show, and she has been cited as an inspiration to Black actors like Whoopi Goldberg and astronauts like Mae Jemison. After her groundbreaking role, she spent decades volunteering to recruit women and people of color to NASA.

After a moment of silence, Rose Gooding, who portrays a younger version of the character in “Strange New Worlds,” came on stage to speak about Nichols and introduce a video tribute to the actor.

“I stand on Nichelle Nichols shoulders not only in portraying the character she originated and embodied, but in following a path she blazed for Black women and femmes onscreen and off,” Gooding said. “As I sit on the bridge of the Enterprise, I feel her presence, I see her influence in those who knew her, and I strive to carry the majestic legacy forward into the future she wanted for all of us.”

“Star Trek” Podcasts

During the ceremony, it was confirmed that official “Star Trek” podcast The Pod Directive will return for Season 3, with Newsome and Thompkins returning to host. In addition, “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” screenwriter Nicholas Meyer announced the first “Star Trek” scripted podcast, “Star Trek: Khan – Ceti Alpha V,” which will cover the 15 years between when iconic “Trek” villain Khan Noonien Singh was deposited on the planet Ceti Alpha V by Capt. Kirk (in the episode of the original “Star Trek” series entitled “Space Seed”) and is rediscovered during the events of “The Wrath of Khan.”

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 trailer reveals 2023 release date, plot, and a surprising setting

Wait, which ship is the crew on this time?

The new USS Titan in Picard S3

The last ride of Jean-Luc Picard won’t begin on the starship Enterprise . The new sneak-peek Picard Season 3 trailer, which just dropped for “Star Trek Day,” surprisingly reveals which starship is boldly going somewhere this time — turns out, it’s actually a new version of an old starship.

Here are all the details we now have on the final season of Star Trek: Picard , including hints at the actual story, and how that new ship totally could set up a spin-off.

Picard Season 3 Star Trek Day Trailer

After a few teaser trailers that have only given vague hints about Picard Season 3, this new sneak peek actually shows the beloved Next Generation crew in action. Beginning with a distress call from Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ), the trailer finds Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) and Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in need of a starship. And the revelation of that specific ship is specific and... fascinating.

The new USS Titan in Picard Season 3

The new USS Titan gets ready to boldly go.

The (new) USS Titan in Picard Season 3

Although Riker was the captain of the USS Titan (NCC-80102) from 2379 to at least 2381 (aka the Lower Decks era ), the Titan we see in the Picard Season 3 trailer is clearly not the same ship. Is it an older version of Riker’s ship? Or a newer version? The trailer doesn’t give a clear shot of the registry number so, right now, that detail is a bit unclear. Riker’s Titan was a Luna-Class starship, while this Titan looks like a blend of old-school Excelsior-class, with some basic TNG vibes.

Turns out, the answer comes from showrunner Terry Matalas himself. According to TrekCore , the new Titan in Picard Season 2, is a new version of a Constitution-Class ship and will be the Titan-A , meaning it is the ship that comes after Riker’s first Luna-Class Titan. Longtime fans know that “Constitution-Class” was the class of the TOS version of the Enterprise . However, there can be updated versions of starship classes as the centuries roll on. In Picard Season 2, we got an updated Excelsior-Class II for 2401. Meanwhile, Discovery Season 3 and Season 4 introduced a 32nd Century Constitution-Class.

Matalas has been teasing that the starship setting of Picard Season 3 won’t be the Enterprise for a while. He’s also described this ship as an “underdog.” So, perhaps this new Titan is underdog-ish from the perspective of folks in the year 2401.

Seven of Nine in 'Picard' Season 3

The commanding officer of the new Titan ?

At this point, it’s also unclear who the captain of this Titan will be. In the trailer, we see Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) greet Riker and Picard, and she’s the one who gives the order to “engage!” So, maybe Seven is in command of the ship, and Riker and Jean-Luc are along for the ride? Is this now a mission to save Crusher? How do Geordi, Worf, Raffi ,and Troi fit in? And where’s Brent Spiner? We’ll just have to wait and see!

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 release date

After much speculation, the release date for Picard Season 3 has been confirmed for February 16, 2023. Mark your calendars.

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) in Picard Season 3

Raffi (Michelle Hurd) in Picard Season 3.

Will Picard Season 3 set up a Seven and Raffi spin-off?

With Picard coming to an end in 2023, fans have wondered if the series could lead into another series, this time focused on Seven of Nine and Raffi. Terry Matalas has said that, although he is supportive of a continuation, there are no current plans for a sequel series to Picard . That said, in a long interview with TrekMovie , Matalas made it pretty clear that everything in Picard Season 3 is designed to set up another series. So, if Picard Season 3 goes over well, it seems possible that we could see this Star Trek setting — the beginning of the 25th century — support more stories moving forward.

Picard Season 3 Looks Borg-eous

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Well, this is an Enterprise -ing development: The trailer for season three of Star Trek: Picard was just released, and boy does it have stakes. I mean, “There’s a darkness, an all-consuming darkness” and “Jean-Luc, trust no one” are both said within one minute of the trailer beginning. Some shady stuff is going down. Luckily, we’ve got a crew that can handle it with many of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast joining Patrick Stewart as Picard for the final season of the show. LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner will all be present, plus Ed Speleers ( Outlander ) and Todd Stashwick ( Riches ) will have regular and recurring roles, respectively. LeVar Burton may not be on Jeopardy! , but it sounds like he is “in jeopardy.” Live long enough for the premiere February 16 on Paramount+ with new episodes streaming weekly.

Patrick Stewart got to step back into one of his most iconic roles in 2020, with the release of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access (now Paramount+ ). Now, the second season is complete, and Paramount has already announced the cast, a release date, and even an official trailer for season three. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season three of Picard.

Picard season 3: What to expect

The first season of Star Trek: Picard dealt with two events that were actually holdovers from different Star Trek films in the past: Data's death in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (Picard struggles with this throughout the first season), and the destruction of Romulus in 2009's Star Trek (which was used to introduce the synthetic humans that helped prevent the rescue of Romulan refugees and ultimately set the stage for Picard to resign from Star Fleet). The synths are subject to a ban, and Picard is pushed to help them because of two synthetic twins that are related to his old friend Data.

Spoiler alert: This all culminates in Picard finding the home of Data's original creator and himself becoming a synthetic at the end of season one to prevent his own death.

This brings us to where we last left Picard - blasting off on the ship La Sirena with a new makeshift crew, heading toward whatever new adventure awaits. The second season starts with Picard transported to the year 2024 along with some of his old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation series (such as Jerri Ryan’s Seven of Nine and Michelle Hurd’s Raffi Musiker). Picard and friends must discover what the omnipotent Q (John De Lancie) has done to change the timeline that has created a xenophobic version of Starfleet - the Confederation of Earth - which is out to destroy all aliens.

The first teaser for season three sees him rummaging through his old Star Trek: The Next Generation gear, and then we see him and his old partner Riker (Jonathan Frakes), standing side by side, pointing phasers at someone. The teaser also promises more returning characters in season three such as Brent Spinner as Data and Levar Burton as Geordi La Forge. The official trailer for season three is also vague on plot details, but it does show a new ship: The USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker. We also see Dr. Crusher fighting off masked enemies with a rifle, and a Federation building exploding.

Picard season 3: Release date

  • Star Trek: Picard season three release date - 16 February 2023

Keep in mind the production and filming of seasons two and three all began simultaneously in 2020. The second season of Star Trek: Picard premiered in March 2022 - two years after season one ended - while season three is releasing in early 2023.  Jonathan Frakes and Terry Matalas are directing the final season, with 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas stepping in as showrunner for the season.

Picard season 3: Cast and crew

LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner have been announced by Paramount to join Patrick Stewart in the cast of Star Trek: Picard season three.

Picard season 3: Where to stream

The third season isn't yet available. Below is where you'll likely be able to stream it when it does release.

The second season of Picard took Discovery's Thursday timeslot on Paramount+ . It premiered in March 2022 and is still airing. The third season hasn't yet premiered but will obviously be a Paramount+ exclusive.

Amazon Prime Video is Picard's home in the UK, with new episodes airing a day later starting on 4 March 2022. One has to assume season three will also come to Prime Video in the UK, but it's not confirmed.

In Canada, season two is available on Crave. We suspect season three will also be available via Crave once it premieres in early 2023.

Picard season 3: Trailers

One official trailer is available for the new season -- below. It shows Patrick Stewart back for a final adventure, paired with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. We see LeVar Burton's Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirti'’ Deanna Troi. Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd.

Two other teaser trailers have been released for the third season. You can watch them both below, to get a look at a few returning cast members from The Next Generation.

The trailer above debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2022, while the one below came out a little earlier in 2022.

Both confirm that we're going to see some familiar faces in the last season of Picard.

Picard season 3: How to catch up

Boldly going where no one has gone before is... fine. But boldly going where we’ve all been before might not be so bad either. That’s the big gamble of Star Trek: Picard season 3, which not only brings Patrick Stewart’s Trek captain back for a final adventure, but pairs him with his original crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The trailer for the nostalgia-heavy season 3, which will arrive next February, debuted during Paramount Plus’ “Star Trek Day” livestream, and gave us new looks at LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden’s Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi. Next Gen and Picard alum Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner also return to the series, alongside Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd. 12 Monkeys creator Terry Matalas steps in as showrunner for the season, which will also be the series’ last.

The trailer for Picard season 3 is vague on plot details, but does reveal the captain and his crew’s new ride: the USS Titan, commanded by Captain William T. Riker, a starship with serious Enterprise vibes. We also see Dr. Crusher holding off some masked foes with a rifle, and a Federation building imploding — things remain not good in the utopian future!

What’s going on and why Picard needs to call his work fam for help will become clear when Star Trek: Picard season 3 premieres on Paramount Plus on Feb. 16, 2023.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3: Release Date, Cast, And More For The Show's Final Season

Patrick Stewart as Admiral Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard

(Welcome to ...And More , our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

This year's Star Trek Day offered plenty of new teases for what's to come in the beloved franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. Fans were treated to sneak peeks at the future of shows like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and more. However, those with an affinity towards "Star Trek: The Next Generation" are likely the most excited for the upcoming season of "Star Trek: Picard."

Ahead of the series' third and final chapter, Paramount unveiled a brand new trailer touting the next adventure starring the legendary admiral played by Patrick Stewart. But he'll also be joined by a number of old friends for the first time since 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis" in what could be the former Enterprise captain's last mission.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 release date and where to watch it

"Star Trek: Picard" can be found on Paramount+ along with every other "Star Trek" series and film to date. While seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream in their entirety right now, the 10-episode third and final season will premiere on February 16, 2023, with new episodes dropping each Thursday.

What is Star Trek: Picard season 3 about?

"Star Trek: Picard" season 3 will feature a reunion between Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D from "Star Trek: The Next Generation." As indicated in the trailer above, Picard is contacted by Dr. Beverly Crusher to help her with something — presumably something dire, as she is seen wielding a large weapon. In order to do that, Picard needs to find a ship to get him where he needs to go since his last crew is technically displaced across space and time (by their own volition). Naturally, his former first officer Will Riker offers his services, whether the admiral likes it or not.

The pair then end up on the USS Titan, an important vessel in "Star Trek" lore because not only did Riker serve as its captain at one point, but Ensign Bradward Boimler from "Star Trek: Lower Decks" served on the ship as well. Now, when Picard and Riker board the ship, they're welcomed by the first officer, Seven of Nine.

It's unclear just how Deanna Troi, Geordi LaForge, and Worf come into play at this point, but we're all certainly excited to see how they fit into this puzzle. Like Riker says to Picard, "Wherever you go, we go." That's all the reason we need, isn't it?

Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast and crew

The majority of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast will return for "Star Trek: Picard" season 3. In addition to Patrick Stewart as the series' titular hero, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, and Michael Dorn will reprise their roles as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Deanna Troi, Geordi LaForge, William Riker, and Worf, respectively. Brent Spiner, who has appeared on the show as Data, Data's creator Altan Soong, and Altan's 21st century ancestor Adam Soong, is also set to appear in the show's final season in some capacity.

The only original "TNG" cast members that will be missing (as far as we know) will be Wil Wheaton, who appeared in the season 2 finale, and Denise Crosby, who played Security Chief Tasha Yar and the half-Romulan Commander Sela.

Among the series regulars for "Star Trek: Picard," the trio of Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, and Orla Brady return as Seven of Nine, Raffi Musiker, and Laris. However, for obvious reasons in most cases, the rest of the cast members, including Santiago Cabrera, Alison Pill, Evan Evagora, and Isa Briones, will not be a part of this final mission.

Behind the scenes, Terry Matalas has the Conn as the showrunner for the third and final season for "Star Trek: Picard." The co-creator of SyFy's "12 Monkeys" and showrunner for the recent "MacGuyver" reboot joined the team during season 2 to work alongside Akiva Goldsman as co-showrunners when Michael Chabon left to pursue other work under his overall deal with CBS Television Studios. But following the second season, which was shot back-to-back with the third, Matalas was left as the sole showrunner to carry out what he called in SFX Magazine (via Trek Movie ) "some game-changing Star Trek Universe ideas."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Expect to see some familiar faces...

preview for Star Trek: Picard Cast vs IRL

Picard spoilers follow.

With season two now over, there's only one more chapter left before we bid the series adieu forever – but will the character be put to rest as well or will he appear again in the ever-expanding Star Trek universe?

At least we won't have to wait as long for season two as we did season three. To make up for lost production time mid-pandemic, the Powers That Be at Star Trek decided to film the second and third seasons back-to-back in case of more delays.

Pretty smart thinking right? And now it's just a matter of waiting for the series to be put together and given some A-Star effects treatment to get it perfect for fans.

But what lies ahead in the final instalment?

So join us here at Digital Spy as we boldly go one last time into Picard 's world and look ahead to what's coming next in the third and final season.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 release date: When will it air?

patrick stewart as picard, star trek picard season 2 episode 6

Star Trek: Picard fans can rest easy in the knowledge that the third and final season will be with them on February 12, 2023. The news came accompanied by a brand spanking new teaser trailer (more on that below).

As previously mentioned, season three was filmed immediately after season two, which wasn't exactly easy for anyone involved, least of all Patrick Stewart.

Speaking to Variety following the season-two finale, everyone's favourite captain revealed that filming wrapped for season three in March 2022. Five weeks later, Sir Patrick admitted he was "still recovering from it"... which gives us all kinds of excitement for what's coming up.

"It was very intense," Sir Patrick said. "We filmed the 10 episodes of season two and wrapped it at about seven o'clock in the evening, and began season three at seven o'clock the next morning. And it was like that for about 13 months, I think. Longer than a year, I know that."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 cast: Who's coming back?

jeri ryan as seven of nine, star trek picard

Following the events of season two, we expect the following cast members will return for Picard season three, including: Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, Michelle Hurd as Rafaella "Raffi" Musiker, Evan Evagora as Elnor, and Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine .

One notable exception to this will be Alison Pill after she recently confirmed that Agnes Jurati won't be returning in the final season.

"I know that season three will be the end," Pill told MovieWeb . "I wasn't a part of season three, so I don't have much to say about it in terms of spoilers. I will get to watch along with everybody else."

There's also a question mark around Santiago Cabrera's involvement now that Cristobal "Chris" Rios has decided to stay in the past and live out his life there instead.

Thankfully, some very special cast members have been lined up to take their place. Before season two even finished airing, Picard had already announced that a huge number of classic characters from Next Generation play a key role in season three .

These include: LeVar Burton (Lt Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Gates McFadden (Dr Beverly Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T Riker), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Data).

But don’t expect Spiner to just play Data. According to the actor (via TrekMovie ), "Lore is in it in a very complicated way which I think you’ll find out ultimately when you watch the show. What else can I tell you? Really nothing because we were informed long ago - we signed these NDAs."

When talking about his return to the role, Burton said (via TrekMovike.com ) : "We're all done now and it was an absolute blast. It was so good to be together. I mean, we're all very, very close anyway. We try to get together once a year for Christmas, but during COVID we weren't able to do that, so being able to get together at the end of last year and the beginning of this year was really cool for us."

He went on to say that it was the perfect send-off for the Next Generation cast.

"We all thought the ship had sailed on a conscious goodbye," he shared. "When me made our last movie, Nemesis in 2002, we expected there to be another one, and then things changed. So this was a great gift to us.

"This season of Picard is a love poem to Next Generation and we get to see these people that we grew to know and even love at this new point in their lives."

Picard showrunner Terry Matalas celebrated the news in a joyous statement (via Deadline ). "I remember watching the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation almost 34 years ago with my father like it was yesterday. It was the spark that ignited my love for science-fiction. So, it's most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honouring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the USS Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honour," he said.

"The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can't wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in season three!"

And let's not forget about this season's antagonist . Matalas teased that a major star is set to play the show's next villain, but he wasn't prepared to give fans any hint as to who it may be.

Replying to a fan on Twitter who asked whether the next villain will be a new character, the show boss replied: "It is a new character. Played by someone you've seen a million times before. Someone I've always wanted to work with. And… wow. You're not ready."

After ruling out Star Trek regular Jeffrey Combs, Matalas later confirmed that it will be someone completely new to the Trek universe – so start placing your bets on who it will be (and if you bet Amanda Plummer , you were right!)

Star Trek: Picard season 3 plot: What will happen?

allison pill as jurati, annie wersching as borg queen, star trek picard season 2 episode 6

Speaking to EW following the season two finale, Patrick Stewart hinted at how the Next Generation crew will return in season three:

"We will meet them, but it's not a reassembling at all. It's not just a reunion. Everybody has a function, and that's really all I'm allowed to say, because what's coming up in season three I think is very exciting. And, of course, a lot of it will involve the way that the characters we've known for so long have evolved."

More specific plot points remain elusive for now, although Stewart did tease that season three could be the most interesting of all.

"When I read for the first time the ending of season two, I do remember one of the things that I said was, 'Where the hell are we going to go from here?' Because it almost seemed that there was a conclusion," he said.

"I wondered for a moment, 'Oh dear, are we going to be wrapped early, and the show will disappear?' But we did not. And season three, in many respects, proved to me to be among the most interesting of episodes and moments that we had in the whole show."

But what does the future hold beyond that? Well, comments by Sir Patrick seemingly putting a full stop on the world past the final batch of episodes.

"I think that Picard has said his last sentence and given his last look at his colleagues," he told Variety. "I think the way we close season three is perfect. Perfect. It makes me emotional each time I think of it, but it's great."

Whatever happens, expect season three to feel cinematic.

"Terry Matalas was so in love - in the most beautiful way - with the idea of saying, 'I want to see that last Next Gen movie, that movie that I never got to see,'" showrunner Alex Kurtzman said (via TrekMovie ). "But let’s tell that story over 10 episodes and make it one big blowout. And he really delivered on that.

"Because the truth is, if we had sat down and said let’s do a Next Gen movie and you’ve got two hours to introduce all these characters, then everybody would have been shortchanged. There’s no way it would have worked. And so I think the fact that we got to do it over these 10 hours with this farewell, to me, it’s a love letter to what Picard was. It’s a love letter to all fans of Star Trek and to this to the legacy of this incredible show."

Star Trek: Picard season 3 trailer: When can we expect it?

preview for Star Trek: Picard - Final season sneak peek (Paramount+)

First, we had a teaser - and it was a very good teaser (that you can watch above).

Just short of one and a half minutes, the brief trailer shows admiral Jean-Luc Picard receiving an SOS message before meeting up with his old pal Riker (Jonathan Frakes) in a bar, seeking his help.

Now he swears he's not asking him to put himself in any danger but the sub-context suggests otherwise. We're sure you'll make up your own minds once you've watched and rewatched and (and rewatched) it.

We've since had a full trailer - and it's pretty amazing.

It lays out the plot, stakes, introduces our new villain (played by Amanda Plummer, who seems to be having the time of her life), and finds time for a couple of goosebump moments.

Keep checking in here and we promise to keep you updated with any more news.

Picard season 3 recap: What's happened so far

An image indicating spoilers are ahead.

  • Episode 1: The season began on the SS Eleos, in the 25th century, where Dr. Beverly Crusher and her son Jack were attacked, leading Crusher to send a signal for Jean-Luc Picard. When told to not bring Starfleet into this situation, Picard called up Riker, and the two managed to get the USS Titan-A thanks to Seven of Nine. Picard and Riker board the Eleos to find Dr. Crusher in stasis. Meanwhile, on M'talas Prime, a Starfleet facility is destroyed by a portal device.
  • Episode 2: A large ship called the Shrike captures the Eleos, and Seven of Nine convinces Capt. Liam Shaw to help the team. The Shrike is captained by a bounty hunter named Vadic who declares Crusher's son Jack to be a wanted war criminal. Picard realizes that Jack is his son, and while Starfleet intelligence officer Raffi Musiker  is almost killed by the Ferengi criminal Sneed, Worf saves Musiker, and kills Sneed.
  • Episode 3: Crusher reveals she kept Jack's lineage secret to protect him from assassination attempts, while the Shrike and the Titan are engaged in combat. Riker takes over the the Titan, and they find out a Changeling on their ship who was sabotaging their chip. Then, another Changeling is found to be responsible for the M'talas Prime incident. Riker and Picard spend the episode disagreeing on how to deal with the Shrike, and Jean-Luc's insistence they attack leads to the Titan taking serious damage — and Riker ordering him off the bridge.
  • Episode 4: Vadic is revealed to be a Changeling, Riker admits Picard was right all along, Picard and Jack bond and Shaw reveals how his time in Starfleet was effected by that time Picard was assimilated by The Borg. Our heroes manage to to escape and damage the Shrike, and Picard starts to realize he's met Jack before, while Jack starts to experience visions of a post-apocalyptic world and a haunting voice saying "find me."
  • Episode 5: Jack has visions of himself murdering the crew, Shaw regains control and brings in Starfleet ... who have Picard and Riker arrested. Have they confirmed Mary Wisesman is returning? Hoping for more Cronenberg.

Frustratingly, Wiseman has not (yet?) been confirmed, even though she’s the most obvious choice for a continuing character. I’ll be very upset if she ends up not being in the show.

Did they confirm what era? Will it be in discovery’s or New Worlds’ or in its own?

31st century

Wouldn’t this be the fourth live action series? Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds. Did I miss one?

Never mind. Short Treks. Got it

They are counting Short Treks as a series. Even though it is just bonus material for Discovery and Picard.

I’ll check it out but really wish they would have made more episodes of prodigy.

Prodigy just dropped a 20 episode second season on Netflix on July 1st.

I just binge watched the first 10 episodes and it´s GOOD!!!

Season 2 of Prodigy is fantastic, some of the best Trek of the new era. This Stafleet Academy show is going to have a lot of work to do in order to do that concept even half as good as Prodigy is.

The 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2 Finale Has a Special Treat for 'Picard' Fans [Exclusive]

Editor's Note: This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2.

  • Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is now on Netflix, featuring a delightful mix of storylines for fans of all ages.
  • The show includes a special moment for Star Trek: Picard fans, with Wesley Crusher reuniting with his mother and meeting his little brother.
  • The collaboration between the Prodigy and Picard teams made it possible to include the Crusher family reunion.

After nearly getting cast into oblivion when Paramount+ axed the animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 has finally made it to our screens by way of Netflix. Filled with delightful storylines for fans both young and old, Prodigy Season 2 is such a delight, it's even more difficult to understand how Paramount let the series go in the first place. One of the major plot points of the season sees the kids cross paths with the now legendary Wesley Crusher ( Wil Wheaton ) in a timey-wimey adventure for the ages. While that storyline in and of itself is a treat for anyone who watched Wes grow up on The Next Generation , series co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman also managed to slip in an extra special moment for those fans who tuned in for the final season of Star Trek: Picard .

At the end of his adventure with the young Prodigy crew, Wes takes a few precious moments in this reality to pop in and say hello to his dear mother Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ). And, given when the animated series takes place in the greater Star Trek timeline, Wes is able to meet his baby brother Jack before he jets back off to continue protecting the universe through space and time. During a conversation with Collider's Maggie Lovitt , the Hagemans revealed how they were able to pull off that sweet family reunion and what it meant to have Wesley be such a major part of Season 2. Dan Hageman said:

"We were in conversation with Terry [Matalas] and talking about it. We were trying to figure out how old Jack was at that time. We were trying to figure out where we were because we knew we wanted the wrap-up of Wesley to be with his mother. That was the thing, where itd be kind of weird if she didnt say, like, 'Oh, you've got a brother there, Wesley.' So, luckily we were doing it at the right place at the right time, and it all worked out."

Kevin Hageman chimed in to note that there was plenty of synergy going on between the Prodigy and Picard teams as the live-action series made sure to clear their Season 2 Wesley cameo with them too. "Even the team on Picard heard that we were really gonna be using Wesley, and so they very graciously called up and said, 'We were hoping to do a little cameo for him too. What are you guys doing with him?' So, we were in sync," he explained. "And I'm really proud and so happy now that the world can see that we're bringing Wesley back.

Terry Matalas Is "So Grateful" The 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Team Had Wesley and Jack Crusher Meet

Upon watching that emotional reunion in Prodigy 's Season 2 finale, Lovitt reached out to Picard Season 3 showrunner, Terry Matalas , for comment, and he had heaps of praise for what the Hagemans were able to do with these shared characters. He said:

"It was a wonderful bit of collaboration. They reached out originally to get a sense of where Beverly was in her life at that particular moment knowing we were about to feature her heavily. They said they wanted the scene to include Wesley which was such a beautiful idea. And I said, well, you know what's really interesting is you have an opportunity to do what we can't at the moment, which is have Wesley meet his younger brother. I'm so grateful they included that."

Wheaton previously explained why it is so difficult for Wes to visit Beverly and Jack , but we're so glad that Prodigy was able to find a way for all the Crushers to spend a little time together. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is now available to stream on Netflix in the U.S. Stay tuned at Collider for Lovitt's full conversation with the Hageman brothers.

@Anthony and @Laurie, do you think that the Trek prequel movie is really going into production this year, as Anthony suggests it has to if they are going to meet their announced release date? What percent chance do you give that actually happening?

Tony is much more tuned into the business side of things than I am (obviously), so he’s better qualified to guess at this one.

What we have so far are these writing announcements, and one post on Box Office Mojo for a Beyond sequel with no release date. And the cone of silence has (mostly) been in place since then.

There are some very public activities that have to happen when making a movie. Financing needs to be secured. Studio space blocked out. The production design folks are doing their works months in advance of principle photography. The legal guys are TM’ing everything they can. Buy the website domains. Gotta build the damn sets. So far, nothing. It’s not like the talent is getting calls and emails today, that production starts next Tuesday…..

I’m in wait and see mode. And I’m batting 1.000 so far on calling out that what they say and what they’re doing are very different.

I don’t believe I said they would be going into production. That would have to be next year, but by the end of this year they would likely have to at least start doing some things like hiring key people and of course casting if they want to go into pre-production early next year. Some of this can be done under the radar but casting tends to get out there in the trades, especially for major roles. A lot of this depends on if they’re aiming for a summer or a fall release in 2026.

I literally said the same thing a few weeks ago on another thread and something needs to happen by the end of the year. There’s five months to get in gear but per usual we been down this transwarp corridor to many times now.

You would think for a movie that’s supposed to be out in two years time now and supposedly with a writer and director that they would be talking up the movie at this point. Throw out bits and pieces when production could start, hints of the story, casting updates etc etc.

Instead it’s going down the exact same road as the others. They make these announcements they are starting it and then complete silence about anything else until it just withers away completely. So yeah my faith isn’t good but it hasn’t been for literally years now.

It’s mind boggling how they keep doing this over and over again.

Lower. The . Cone of silence!!

Years from now, when it no longer matters, I hope that somebody writes the definitive inside story of this era of Trek movie false alarms, missteps and course changes. I cannot fathom how this has been allowed to go on for so long; talk about illogical!

It took ten years between the end of TOS and the creation of the first movie, so there is precedent for indecision and false starts killing many Trek movie ideas.

What is different now is that the entire movie industry is in turmoil as theatrical films ebb in their importance relative to streaming. Paramount has a robust streaming Trek machine now, so the relative importance of getting a theatrical film together seems much less of a priority than it did in the oughts when Trek was off television. Star Wars seems to be going through the same pattern.

I think it’s a great idea that you aren’t covering all episodes at once. Just because all episodes are out at once doesn’t mean folks are able to watch it all at once. Thankfully my kids got into it and we ended up watching it all in a couple of days.

I’m conscience of overall spoilers but did anyone pick up how much the overall arch of the series had strong parallels with a relatively recent beta canon novel story line. I’d would like to hear Anthony’s and Laurie’s perspective on it in the podcast as it comes up.

I confess I am not up on beta canon! I read the novels as a kid but then stopped for decades, only checking out a few here and there… mostly the autobiography series.

All I’ll say is I enjoyed Dénes House’s review of them on the site ;-)

If its the one I think you’re referring to, I noticed that too. Of course, this one has a much happier ending than the novel trilogy.

Its so weird hearing Tony and Laurie speculate about what will happen next when so many of us have already seen the entire season. I guess there isn’t really a better way to do it though.

Tony/Laurie,

If I could pitch an idea for the next Kelvin-verse film, I’d live to see that cast in an adaptation of Garfield and Judith Reeves-Steven’s Prime Directive novel. It’s one of the best TOS novel and it’s perfect for a final Kelvin-verse mission.

I’m enjoying Prodigy. It feels like classic Star Trek. It’s the post-nemesis show I wanted. It is amazing what these writers can do with 23 minutes. They fit more character development plot, and science fiction concepts than most one hour shows. I’m not a binger, I like to savor the episodes too so I’m glad you two are doing it this way.

Unfortunately, while looking at google news, I saw a spoiler, made me mad, so be careful.

Have a great week!

There are so many parallels this season with Dal/Gwyn and J/C that it actively kills me. I will say more when you get further. Suffice it to say that these writers understand EXACTLY what they are doing.

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Star trek: discovery’s ending beautifully showed saru changed for the better, star trek: discovery’s “calypso” short trek & finale epilogue reveal explained.

  • Star Trek: Short Treks is a series of mini-episodes for fans of modern Star Trek shows.
  • The episodes provide insights into new and established characters and are crucial for understanding the evolving Star Trek timeline.
  • Some episodes are essential for understanding specific storylines in other Star Trek series like Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Picard, and Prodigy.

Star Trek: Short Treks may not have been priority viewing for many Star Trek fans, but these mini-episodes tie into the modern Star Trek shows in essential ways. Initially conceived as a companion to Star Trek: Discovery , the first season of Short Treks consists of four live-action episodes that tie into the adventures of Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery. The second season of Short Treks includes four live-action episodes and two animated episodes, incorporating more characters from other Star Trek series.

Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Picard, and Star Trek: Prodigy all feature vital elements first introduced in Star Trek: Short Treks, and the mini-episodes have now become even more important. Not only are the Short Treks episodes fast, fun, and entertaining, but they also offer fascinating insights into both new and established characters. Whether they tie directly into major plot points or simply reveal more about a particular character, Star Trek: Short Treks has become required viewing if one wants to fully understand the evolving Star Trek timeline .

The Star Trek TV franchise has existed for 57 years and consists of 12 shows (and counting). Here's how to watch them all in timeline order.

6 Tilly’s Short Trek Is Needed To Understand Star Trek: Discovery Season 2’s Ending

Star trek: short treks season 1, episode 1 - "runaway".

In the first episode of Star Trek: Short Treks , Ensign Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) encounters an alien lifeform that snuck onto the USS Discovery. Tilly communicates with the alien, learning that she is a young woman named Po (Yadira Guevara-Prip) from the planet Xahea. Tilly and Po share a love of science, and Po shares that she created a dilithium incubator that could recrystallize dilithium. This discovery made Xahea one of the most politically important planets in the galaxy, which Po found overwhelming.

Even before Po reveals that she is the new queen of her people, Tilly inspires Po to be a good leader, encouraging her to go back to her planet. Tilly's friendship with Po proves incredibly helpful later, in the final episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 2 . Tilly realizes that Po's dilithium incubator could be used to charge the time crystal needed for Michael Burnham's time-traveling Red Angel suit. Po also led the final charge against Control, giving the USS Discovery time to complete their mission and providing important intel to Starfleet.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

5 Saru’s Star Trek: Short Trek Is Vital To Understand Discovery’s Kelpien Hero

Star trek: short treks season 1, episode 3 - "the brightest star".

Throughout Star Trek: Discovery's five seasons , Saru (Doug Jones) underwent quite a transformation. Star Trek: Short Treks ' "The Brightest Star" not only offers more insight into Saru as a character, but also provides a glimpse of his family and his life on Kaminar. Unlike the Kelpians around him, Saru was not content to live in constant fear of the Ba'ul. When a piece of advanced technology falls off of one of the Ba'ul's ships, Saru uses it to send out a message to the stars.

Star Trek: Discovery's final episode beautifully proved that Doug Jones' Saru had undergone a major change for the better since season 1.

Lt. Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) answers Saru's message, offering the curious Kelpien the chance at a new life among the stars. Saru leaves his home planet, believing he will likely never return. Saru's curiosity not only gives him a chance to see the universe, but also ends up saving his people from the Ba'ul. As the first and only Kelpian in Starfleet, Saru became one of Star Trek: Discovery's best characters , and his story is incomplete without Short Treks' "The Brightest Star."

4 Spock’s Star Trek: Short Trek Reveals Why Number One Loves Gilbert & Sullivan

Star trek: short treks season 2, episode 1 - "q&a".

The first episode of Star Trek: Short Treks season 2 features the return of Ethan Peck's Spock and Rebecca Romijn's Number One after their debut in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. During Spock's first day as an Ensign on the USS Enterprise, he and Number One get trapped in a turbolift. To pass the time, Spock rattles off questions which Una answers. The Star Trek mini-episode not only offers insight into Spock's personality and emotional conflict, but also reveals Una's love of Gilbert and Sullivan.

In a 2019 New Yorker article, "Q&A" writer Michael Chabon revealed that he conceived the episode as a way to explain the change in Spock's personality from Star Trek's original pilot, "The Cage," to the rest of Star Trek: The Original Series .

Throughout Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Spock continues to struggle with his emotions and the conflict between his human and Vulcan sides. Number One's love of Victorian comedic opera would come up again in Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2 , "Ad Astra Per Aspera." During Number One's trial, the judge asks the Enterprise crew members if they ever suspected that Una was hiding something. Spock reveals that Una was indeed hiding "an affinity for Gilbert and Sullivan musicals."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a television series that takes place before the events of the original series and follows Captain Christopher Pike as he mans the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show focuses on this previous crew of the Enterprise as they explore the galaxy with returning characters from Discovery.

3 Star Trek: Discovery’s Real Ending Is 2018’s Short Trek

Star trek: short treks season 1, episode 2 - "calypso".

Star Trek: Discovery's final season finally connected the show back to the Star Trek: Short Treks season 1 episode, "Calypso" which takes place on the USS Discovery in the distant future. "Calypso" originally aired between Discovery's first and second seasons, well before the USS Discovery traveled to the 32nd century. Discovery's jump to the far future complicated the timeline a bit, but the show still managed to tie everything together in the end, canonically establishing "Calypso" as the final Star Trek: Discovery tale.

In "Calypso," a soldier named Craft (Aldis Hodge) encounters the derelic USS Discovery, and becomes friends with the ship's sentient computer system, Zora (Annabelle Wallis). Zora and Craft begin to develop feelings for one another, but Zora eventually encourages Craft to attempt the journey home to his family. Star Trek: Discovery's series finale shows the titular ship being returned to its original configuration and sent out on a Red Directive mission to encounter Craft.

Star Trek: Discovery's series finale epilogue puts the pieces in place for Star Trek: Short Treks "Calypso" to happen in the future.

2 Star Trek: Prodigy Fixes Short Treks’ Biggest Tribble Mistake

Star trek: short treks season 2, episode 2 - "the trouble with edward".

In Star Trek: Short Treks' "The Trouble with Edward," Lt. Edward Larkin (H. Jon Benjamin) decides that Tribbles would make a good food source if he could figure out a way to make them reproduce more quickly. The new commander of the USS Cabot, Captain Lynne Lucero (Rosa Salazar), orders Larkin to abandon his Tribble project , troubled by the ethical problems with eating a species of unknown intelligence. Larkin, however, disobeys this order and continues his experiments anyway, with disastrous consequences.

Larkin's Tribbles begin multiplying rapidly, eventually taking over the entire ship. Captain Lucero orders an evacuation and every crew member except Larkin manages to escape. In the Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 premiere, Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui) reveals that she figured out a way to keep Tribbles from reproducing so rapidly, much to the amazement of many more experienced Starfleet officers. By the far future of Star Trek: Discovery , neutered Tribbles can even safely be kept as pets .

Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

1 Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2’s Ending Ties Into Star Trek: Picard’s Tragic Mars Backstory

Star trek: short treks season 2, episode 6 - "children of mars".

A prequel to Star Trek: Picard , Star Trek: Short Treks ' "Children of Mars" introduces Kima (Ilamaria Ebrahim) and Lil (Sadie Munroe), two elementary school girls who both have parents working on Mars. The rival girls get into a fight, but before their Vulcan principal can discipline them, an alert announces rogue synthetics have attacked Mars. All the screens in the building begin broadcasting news footage of the attack, as rogue synths turn Mars' own defensive weapons against itself.

In the wake of the Mars attack, Starfleet Command suspends their Romulan evacuation mission, a decision with which neither Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) nor Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) agrees.

After the events of Star Trek: Prodigy season 2, Dal R'El (Brett Gray) and his friends are finally accepted into Starfleet Academy. In the Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 finale , the young cadets learn about the attack on Mars, as the news is broadcast across the Academy. Starfleet Command says that missions of exploration will be put on hold as Starfleet rebuilds, but Admiral Janeway secures the newly constructed Protostar class ship, the USS Prodigy, so her cadets can continue Star Trek's ultimate mission to explore strange new worlds.

Star Trek: Picard

After starring in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons and various other Star Trek projects, Patrick Stewart is back as Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: Picard focuses on a retired Picard who is living on his family vineyard as he struggles to cope with the death of Data and the destruction of Romulus. But before too long, Picard is pulled back into the action. The series also brings back fan-favorite characters from the Star Trek franchise, such as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

  • Wesley Crusher returns in Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, offering a connection to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard .
  • Showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman plan to use Crusher as a mentor with a scatterbrained and untrustworthy side.
  • Star Trek: Prodigy aims for a long-lasting impact like the 90s Star Trek series, with hopes for a future similar to The Original Series.

WARNING! This article contains Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 spoilers.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 thrilled fans with the brief return of Wesley Crusher, portrayed by Will Wheaton . Recently, the series showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman revealed why they chose to bring back Crusher and how they plan to use his character in the show.

The inclusion of Wesley Crusher in Prodigy provided delight to long-time fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Furthermore, the showrunners have incorporated special elements for Star Trek: Picard viewers. Crusher will be playing a crucial role in a major crisis that threatens every Star Trek timeline.

During the interview with Screen Rant , Kevin Hageman remarked on the character's legacy, stating,

"He's the original Prodigy! It felt like such a perfect fit. Seeing how he just walked off the screen in 'Next Generation,' we wondered why no one had utilized him since. Everyone seemed hesitant to touch the character, but we wanted to bring him back and do something great with him. Make him a wonderful mentor, but also a little scatterbrained and untrustworthy."

Dan Hageman added, "A little Doctor Who, a little Willy Wonka..."

Matalas reached out to the Hagemans, knowing they were incorporating Wesley into "Prodigy," and coordinated Wesley's cameo in the "Picard" season 2 finale to align with the character's deeper involvement in "Prodigy."

"We had talked to Terry Matalas about what they were doing with Picard.," Dan Hageman explained. "He had contacted us because he knew we were playing with Wesley, and they were going to have Wesley in Picard. And so, we just kind of lined it up. He's got a brother and that's something that we can put into the show. So it was all Kismet."

Kevin Hageman further noted,

I think they were trying to be respectful because they knew that we were already down the line. We had written a whole season with him in it. And so they're like, 'let us have a little bit of him too.'

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 Review | Set Phasers to Awesome on Netflix

The Protostar cadets join Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) on a dangerous mission to rescue Chakotay (Robert Beltran) in the future.

Star Trek: Prodigy Aspires to be Like the 90s Star Trek Series

Star Trek: Prodigy has charted a course for an ambitious future, aiming to mirror the longevity and impact of the Star Trek shows from the 90s. The revival of Star Trek: Prodigy was a triumph for fans, who rallied to save the series from being shelved by Paramount. In an interview with Collider , Dan Hageman voiced his hopes for the series' extended lifespan, saying,

"There’s threads of what's next. If we're lucky enough to go to Season 3, I'm really excited about where the show can go. We wrote this thing to go seven seasons at least."

Kevin Hageman sees Prodigy's fate similar to Star Trek: The Original Series, which also faced cancellation before being revived and eventually spawning a successful film franchise. The showrunner aspires the same future for Star Trek: Prodigy , hoping it will follow the same path.

"I hope people will look back at our show and be like, 'Oh my god, they followed the footsteps of The Original Series. It got canceled, they got brought back to life. Oh, here comes Star Trek the motion picture.' Why not?" Kevin remarked.

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is a thrilling and heartwarming continuation of the series, featuring time travel and strong character development.
  • The animation and storytelling are top-notch, with themes that resonate with both children and adults.
  • The series deserves more recognition and attention for successfully capturing the essence of Star Trek and its endless potential.

A year after Star Trek: Prodigy was cancelled at Paramount+ , the series has delivered one of the best 20-episode runs of television in recent memory with its long-awaited Season 2 premiere. It’s hard to believe that the home of Star Trek would let Season 2 — which is, by all rights, a love letter to the entire franchise, past and present — go to another streamer. Now Netflix will reap the rewards of the flawless, exhilarating storytelling it delivers, which will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. With its second season, Star Trek: Prodigy has taken the very best parts of a nearly sixty-year-old franchise and infused them with vibrant joy, hope-punk optimism, and fresh perspectives. Whether you’re a seven-year-old experiencing Star Trek for the very first time, a millennial who was raised on Star Trek: Voyager , or a die-hard Star Trek: The Next Generation fan, there’s something for everyone spread out across this season, and it will be a crying shame if these characters’ stories end here.

Season 2 picks up shortly after the close of Season 1, with Dal ( Brett Gray ), Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantzoukas ), Rok-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ), Zero ( Angus Imrie ), and Murf ( Dee Bradley Baker ) adjusting to their new lives in San Francisco as official Starfleet cadets. Some of them (namely, Rok-Tahk) are thriving within the structured educational system, while others (unsurprisingly, Dal) are struggling to find their strengths. Dal is also still reeling from the loss of Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ) as she embarks on her quest to prevent Solum’s future civil war. Dal and Gwyn remain the heart and soul of Star Trek: Prodigy and neither distance nor time travel chaos nor promotions bring an end to their sweet flirtations.

Admiral Janeway’s ( Kate Mulgrew ) quest to find Chakotay ( Robert Beltran ) continues throughout the season, and it honestly delivers one of the most satisfying storylines for these characters by paying off seven seasons of their dynamic from Voyager . Whether you wanted Janeway and Chakotay together romantically or preferred for them to remain just friends, you’ll be happy with how their reunion and the preceding antics are handled. With Hologram Janeway in Season 1, Star Trek: Prodigy felt like a spiritual successor to Voyager , but Season 2 is closer to a true continuation of that series, as Dal and his team are assigned aboard USS Voyager-A with Admiral Janeway at the helm and the Doctor ( Robert Picardo ) in sickbay.

Star Trek: Prodigy

A group of enslaved teenagers steal a derelict Starfleet vessel to escape and explore the galaxy.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Turns Wesley Crusher Into the Doctor

Across the first handful of episodes, Dal and the team face some pretty dire time-travel mayhem that sees Gwyn nearly erased from existence and the terrifying Loom threatening to eat up a host of timelines. For a series that is aimed at seven year olds, Star Trek: Prodigy is incredibly smart about how it introduces the concepts of quantum realities, temporal mechanics, and everything else that comes with jumping across timelines, jettisoning through wormholes, and coming face-to-face with the evil versions of Janeway and Chakotay in the Mirror Universe. But perhaps the most exciting wibbly-wobbly thing that Season 2 does is finally turn Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) into a roguish time traveler , following through on that Star Trek: Picard Season 2 tag that felt like it was going to get lost to time itself.

About halfway through the season, Wesley is revealed to be “the entity” that has been guiding Dal and the team (but specifically Murf) through their time travel antics. He's like Star Trek’s answer to Doctor Who , complete with a world-weary attitude that comes from being burdened with the knowledge of every timeline’s triumphs and tragedies, an upbeat sense of humor to combat that emotional baggage, and a healthy dose of mommy issues. This may actually be the best version of Wesley Crusher we’ve encountered thus far, and it’s made even better by how incredibly realistic the animation is. His character feels real in ways that the series has yet to successfully render Janeway and Chakotay; almost as though Wesley Crusher has jumped between not only timelines but the lines between live-action and animation.

Following her introduction in the back half of Season 1, Asencia ( Jameela Jamil ) proves to be a rather formidable foe for Gwyn. Not only does she ensure that Gwyn barely exists by toying with the timelines, but she also capitalizes on her own knowledge of how things will play out to gain insurmountable power and control on Solum, which threatens to destroy not just Gwyn and the Voyager’s new crew, but the whole of the Federation and their timeline. It’s quite fun to see a villain, who is remarkably similar to one of the young heroes, prove to be such a true threat . The fact that she is able to best even a Traveler like Wesley really underscores just how difficult she is to defeat this season. This plotline also allows for some really beautiful followthrough on Gwyn’s dynamic with her father ( John Noble ) that was first introduced in Season 1, and it heals the wounds left by how terribly he treated her.

Characters Remain At the Forefront of the Storytelling in 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2

Star Trek: Prodigy ’s overarching plot for Season 2 is fixing the broken timelines and ensuring that everyone returns to their rightful place in time, but it also ensures that each character’s individual subplots are given ample time to develop and evolve as the cast grows up before us. At the end of the day, the series is about a ragtag bunch of teenagers who have been thrust into political turmoil and the daily dangers of Starfleet and the Federation, but it’s still a teen drama with all of the dressings of one.

Zero’s subplot is one of the most compelling arcs in Season 2 . From the first episode, Prodigy introduces the Medusan’s desire to be like those around them: able to feel and experience all of life’s little pleasures. There are a lot of throwaway lines about wishing they could know what touch feels like, some of which are met with empathizing from the Doctor, while other moments are just pining for those connections. Early on in the season, Zero forms an unexpected connection with the newcomer Maj’el ( Michaela Dietz ), a young Vulcan aboard Voyager-A who becomes a quick ally to the former crew of the Protostar. By Episode 8, Zero gets their chance to experience life as a caporal being when the crew arrives on a mysterious planet occupied by fellow Medusans. Zero gets a few episodes to fully enjoy all of life’s little pleasures within this body before tragedy strikes, forcing them back into their metallic container. Fortunately, they receive a much-needed upgrade that allows them to still feel touch (including Maj’el’s). The entire plotline feels so very Trek, as it grapples with themes of existence and what makes for a fulfilled one. It’s heartening to have a series aimed at a younger demographic that is so unafraid to tackle such larger-than-life themes with so much heart.

Another notable subplot is Chakotay’s. When Dal and co. finally come to his rescue, he’s been marooned for roughly a decade, in a very “New Earth”-style situation, and he’s very closed off and hardened by what he’s faced. As with everyone who encounters the former crew of the Protostar, Dal and his friends inject a much-needed dose of hope into Chakotay’s life, which pushes him to reflect on things. This plotline also allows Prodigy to explore grief through the loss of Chakotay’s first officer, Adreek ( Tommie Earl Jenkins ), which further forces him to face the situation head-on and process how it might affect the relationships around him. And because Season 2 relies heavily on bouncing around through different timelines , it also means we get to enjoy storylines where Chakotay doesn’t make it off Solum and how that affects Janeway; how Dal and co. are processing the loss of Hologram Janeway; and what it might be like for Chakotay to face off against a truly evil version of himself (courtesy of the one and only Mirror Universe).

How Does ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Season 2 End?

There is no guarantee that Star Trek: Prodigy will receive a much-deserved third season ( or a seventh season ), which doesn’t make sense considering how incredible Season 2 is. Despite ending with a tease about what might lie ahead for these characters, the final episode feels like a bittersweet goodbye . It features a beautiful montage of some of the best and brightest scenes from across the two seasons, as the timeline is knit back together, and crisis is averted, and it’s a tear-jerker, despite being a joy-filled moment.

With the time travel chaos in the rearview mirror, Admiral Janeway has new plans for her band of proteges . She, alongside Chakotay and the Doctor, summons the newly minted Starfleet ensigns to the shipyard to see the brand-new U.S.S. Protostar that has been deemed “only suitable for exploration.” Luckily, she’ll fly in a new pilot program that Janeway is putting together, and we’re looking at the crew who will become a “beacon of light” wherever they travel, much as they have been a beacon of light to this franchise for the last three years. While Dal has spent forty episodes envisioning himself as the captain of his own ship—just as he was aboard the Protostar—he comes to realize that his true place is as the first officer to Captain Gwyndala. It’s a natural progression from the dynamics first laid out in the premiere, and a perfect reflection of an era of Star Trek first established by Voyager .

Star Trek: Prodigy begs the question: what is Paramount doing with the Star Trek IP, if they aren’t going to wholeheartedly embrace the series that are doing Star Trek best? It may be a series aimed at children, but aren’t they the future of all franchises? Shouldn’t we be investing in them, capturing their interests, and leading them into the storied halls of a franchise that has so much to offer? Prodigy isn’t the only Star Trek property that’s been left with a giant question mark above its future. It’s unclear if Paramount+ ever intends to follow up the masterpiece that was the final season of Star Trek: Picard , but at least Star Trek: Prodigy delivers a moment that fans were desperately hoping to see. As the final episode of Season 2 draws to a close, Wesley takes Janeway’s advice and drops in to see his mother, Beverly Crusher ( Gates McFadden ), who introduces him to his baby brother, Jack Crusher. It’s a beautiful moment that really underscores how well Prodigy has striven to connect all the various Star Trek series in unexpected ways.

This may not be goodbye for good, but Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 certainly feels like a goodbye for now. However, we part ways knowing that these kids are out there spreading the joy they’ve brought for two seasons, and at the end of the day, this franchise has always had endless potential. Whether it returns for Season 3, in a novel or comic, or ten years down the line in live-action, Star Trek: Prodigy has delivered top-tier storytelling that deserves to be remembered as some of the best this franchise has to offer.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 sees Dal and co. face off against timeline-eating monsters and reunite with beloved characters from Star Trek: Voyager.

  • Season 2 balances the nostalgia of bringing in more Star Trek: Voyager and The Next Generation characters with the cast of Prodigy.
  • The animation feels even more elevated compared to Season 1.
  • The plot comes to a natural conclusion while leaving the door open for future adventures.
  • The storylines deliver so much: heartbreak, grief, love, friendship, and the core themes that make this series one of the best.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming now on Netflix.
