Atlanta When to Go

Atlanta has four distinct seasons, but the climate is generally mild most of the year. Spring arrives early in Georgia, with short sleeves and sunglasses coming out as soon as March. A fit of blossoms and new foliage erupts in April and May, along with some of the city’s best annual events. The Atlanta Dogwood Festival is the unofficial start of spring, while the Inman Park Festival features one of the most bizarre parades of the year. Expect big crowds at both events.

July and August are perhaps the two least desirable months to visit, unless you like hot, sticky weather. Average highs hover around 89 degrees, and the humidity is infamous, making outdoor activities uncomfortable and leading to longer-than-average lines for indoor attractions. Summer’s warmth lingers well into autumn, though breezy days in October, with highs around 73 and lows in the 50s, are relaxed and pleasant.

Newcomers might be surprised to find temperatures that dip below freezing in December or January, but cold snaps don’t tend to stick. Barring a random extreme winter weather event, Atlanta usually sees snowfall only once or twice a year.

Frequently asked questions

  • Delta - 1,092 flights to Atlanta per month
  • Air Canada - 86 flights to Atlanta per month
  • Virgin Atlantic - 38 flights to Atlanta per month
  • Depending on your departure point, select the ‘Nearby airports’ function (located under the departure and arrival options). In some cases, other departure points offer more value for money.
  • If your travel plans aren’t carved in stone, click on the ‘Show flexible dates’ option to browse flight deals for multiple departure dates. Go with any suitable cheaper fare that pops up.
  • Hit ‘Show options’ to filter your search results. You can choose your preferred seating class and airline here. Under ‘Sort & Filter’ to the left, you can even specify whether you want to fly in the morning, afternoon or evening.
  • The early bird catches the most rewarding deals, so book as soon as you’ve worked out your travel dates. The most affordable fares go like hotcakes and prices normally climb as the departure date gets closer.
  • Combine your flights, hotels and car rental into a money-saving package deal. Save your dollars for things you’re really excited about, like exploring Atlanta.
  • If you can, avoid flying in peak seasons. Airfares significantly increase during school breaks, summer and other vacation periods like Easter and Christmas.
  • New York, NY (LGA-LaGuardia) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Intl. Airport (ATL) - 2 hours and 21 minutes
  • Orlando, FL (MCO-Orlando Intl.) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Intl. Airport (ATL) - 1 hour and 44 minutes
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL-Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood Intl.) to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Intl. Airport (ATL) - 1 hour and 59 minutes
  • Before you take your seat on the plane, you’ll need to present a valid form of government ID, such as a passport. You’ll also need your ticket. If you’re traveling with the kids, check with your airline about which documents they may need.
  • To keep you occupied on the short trip to Atlanta, download some new tunes or stock up the audiobook library on your tablet. Food can also be a good distraction while in the air, so maybe even bring a snack.
  • No matter the weather outside (or how long the flight), plane cabins can get a bit chilly. Take a sweater on board to keep yourself cozy.
  • Be flexible. By being open to various travel dates, you’ll have more chances of landing a great deal on your airfares.
  • Find a low-cost airline that offers seats in business class. They usually come with extra legroom and a glass of Champagne — but at a more affordable price.
  • Bid for an upgrade in online auctions (if available) or upgrade your seat through your loyalty program.
  • Start your sightseeing in the downtown area and walk around some of the city’s best attractions. Centennial Olympic Park and Georgia Aquarium are a couple of tourist favorites.
  • You’ll discover rewarding day trips a short commute from the center. Take in Stone Mountain Park first and then make tracks to Emory University.
  • Want to see the sights of Georgia’s other great cities? Pick up a car rental and drive to Columbus or Athens — or both! With your own wheels, discovering those harder-to-find destinations will also be easy.

Top 5 airlines serving from Los Angeles to Atlanta

I always fly with Delta. My friends tell me their horror stories of flying with other airlines. I just smile and say, “You should fly Delta”

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

It was great I love flying Delta and have never had a bad experience with them

They were 2 hours late departing with no explanation. I missed my connection, was rebooked not in correct seating that I paid for. Over all of was horrible. I now know why I've not flown Delta since 2018

Crew was not helpful. Other passengers in first class were over served blatantly over intoxicated.

We just spent $6000 on our first trip since pre COVID and we were stranded on the runway of our departing airport for 2 hours and 15 minutes while our layover was only an hour and a half. We were told by the pilot we were next for de-icing and then got bumped by 3 other planes. Pilot went on to say they only had one guy working the de-icing where they usually have at least 2. In Rochester. In the heart of winter. Someone missed a step and should be fired. I'm not done.

Everything would be much better if Kayak stopped nosing into my business with Delta.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

For a 22 minute flight all you expect is for it to be safe and comfortable

Flight was on time. Staff were friendly. I paid for Economy Plus but was required to check my standard carry-on luggage due to lack of space on the aircraft. This cost me 30 minutes, unexpectedly, in waiting at the baggage claim. This experience did not meet my expectations.

No snacks served! Seating in the kast row in uncomfortable.

Wouldn’t let me check in said couldn’t find a ticket had to wait very long Time

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

I got upgraded, so comfort was not an issue. But as always, it is the people from baggage handlers, flight attendants, pilots etc. that make the difference.

Horrible. Delayed on both planes several times. No attempt to fix it

The crew were great. The boarding process was unclear where to line up. Plane was very old. Flew on a new plane flying from LA to Houston. Business class was great. Plane from Houston to Merida was very old. The plane from LA to Houston made me think I should fly United more. The plane from Houston to Merida made me think I should stick with Aero Mexico and Volaris.

The staff was so kind and very helpful. I had to use handicap wheelchair services and was so thankful for how well they treated me during my whole trip. Thank you so much. Jessie took time to explain his service and what part he played and how others was going to be available to help. The flight attendants was so helpful in helping me get to my seat. Made me want to plan my next trip with United Airlines. I usually use Delta.

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Crew were attentive and friendly. Flight was smooth and early! I enjoyed the less crowded plane. Thank you!

My previous flight was late and did not connect properly. The gate was closed and I missed this flight.

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

Nothing, flight was supposed to leave at 758 am. My flight didn’t leave until 430 pm. Spent the whole day at the airport.

1st flight was delayed because of broken radio, missed connection but they got us on very next plane 1 hr later. Return flights were both delayed by 1 hr each. Crews were fine. Planes ok, but had to check carry ons.

It’s never made crystal clear if your flight will have in flight entertainment or not. That should be explicit

Had to rush between flights due to first leg being late, then pulled for additional security screening and attendants were in no hurry, took other people at same time as my husband and I further delaying us and causing additional stress.

No frills, limited comfort, no food, no entertainment, but fine

One hour late taking off. Concerning, very hard landing. Uncomfortable seats with no recline. Extremely slow baggage claim. Very professional, knowledgeable flight attendants. Brand new, very clean plane.

Can’t say there was anything I particularly liked. Seats were very tight, leather wrapped plastic. I followed up a much longer and cheaper trip from Honolulu on southwest, everything was phenomenal, this flight was the exact opposite. Blows my mind they charge for water of all things. One of the attendants seemed very rude, I watched a taller gentleman a couple rows forward with his knees pressed into the back of the seat ahead, while the woman in that seat leaned forward the entire flight, I’m sure because she could feel his knees. I’ll be avoiding spirit like the plague from here forward.

You get what you pay for. At least they spend money on getting a crew with awesome customer service skills. Carousel was horrible. Waited over an hour for luggage. Mothers were there with young babies. Only one baggage handler was working the carousels. The flight could have been good had we not had this horribly long, exhausting wait twice on one trip.

Unnecessary announcements through out flight. WiFi on plane is terrible and overpriced

Enjoyed the experience, on time flights, friendly staff the WiFi was intros d kept cutting out.

Awful experience. Both flights were delayed several times with weather but also crew members being the official cause. The vouchers are unusable and insufficient ($50 voucher to fly the same crappy airline is a joke for putting me on a red-eye that landed at 3:00 am). The aircrafts were old and uncomfortable (have a real pocket on the seat, for crying out loud!).

Cancelled my flight last minute and had to end up driving to Texas from Atlanta last minute. I’m going to miss another day of work, drive back to Atlanta , in my own car and spirit doesn’t want to refund the money. First time I tried flying anyone else but delta and I get ripped off . And I had. To pay for seats for a flight that didn’t happen. Usually you could say you get what you pay for but in this case, didn’t get anything and paid for everything never flying spirit again, or even attempting it or thinking about it.

Arrogant lady acting up at check in using fowl language and no one contacted police or security

I was penalized for a mistake made by your team

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

The truck that was refueling the plane drove away with the hose still connected to the plane and ripped part of the plane off with it

Terrible. Seats are bad and the baggage policy is inconsistent

Better than I expected but I did pay for a seat and carry on bags ahead of time.

I hope to avoid flying with them in the future. First flight got cancelled then got stuck with a 13 hour layover in Denver. The process was long and frustrating to many people.

Flight was delayed on the runway for 40 minutes the crew did not even offer even water to passengers to compensate for the flight delayed. The flight was delayed due to aircraft mechanical issues. Worst customer service ever

The flight was delayed and I had to cancel because I would have missed my connection and there were no other flights for the next two days. They also lost my bag!!

My first time to fly Frontier and loved it! Boarding was super easy as we only had personal items. Crew was helpful and funny and the plane was clean. Pilot was also great at landing the plane smoothly.
