How to use Midjourney to generate AI images

Tyler Lacoma

The era of AI-generated artwork is upon us, and the internet is filled with users trying to create the perfect prompts to lead AIs to create just the right images – or sometimes, just the wrong ones. Sound like fun? One of the more common AI tools is Midjourney, which people use to create dreamlike landscapes and subjects with just a few words.

What You Need

Discord account

If you’d like to experiment with Midjourney, we’ve got good news: It’s free to sign up, and you can start trying out the AI generator in just a few minutes. Here’s everything you need to know about using it for the first time.

How to start using Midjourney

Step 1: Make sure you have a Discord login . Though there is a dedicated site now, it is invite only. For the vast majority of us, Midjourney works entirely on Discord, so you’ll need an account there to use it. Signing up for Discord is also free if you haven’t done it yet.

Step 2: Visit the Midjourney website . Here, choose Join the beta . This will automatically take you to a Discord invite.

Step 3: Accept the Discord invite to Midjourney. Choose to Continue to Discord .

Step 4: Your Discord app will automatically open. When it does, select the ship-like Midjourney icon on the left menu.

Step 5: In the Midjourney channels, locate the Newcomer rooms. There will typically be a number of newcomer rooms open, with names like “newbies-108.” You can select any of these to begin.

Step 6: Now you’re ready to begin creating AI art. Before you get started, note that you only have a certain number of prompt options available as part of your free trial. You can create around 25 free images. After that, you’ll have to purchase a full membership to continue. If you would rather not spend any money, it’s a good idea to take some time and think about just what you want to create on Midjourney. If you want, you can type “/help” to get a list of tips to peruse.

Step 7: When ready, type “/imagine” in the Discord chat for your newbies room. This will create a prompt field where you can type the image description. The more precise that you can be with your description, the better the AI will be able to produce good results. Be descriptive, and if there’s a particular style that you are looking for, include it in your description. There are terms of conduct to follow here, but if you keep things clean, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

When finished, select Enter to send your prompt.

Step 8: Give Midjourney a minute to generate your images. Typically, the AI will create several different versions based on your description. You now have a number of options to continue.

Look below the images, and you’ll see a section of U and V buttons labeled 1 through 4. The numbers correspond to the four images that Midjourney produced. Choosing U will upscale that particular image into a larger, more defined version. Choosing V will create an all-new image based on the present image that you choose. You will also see a refresh button to the side to request a new set of images. Keep in mind that each of these choices will use up some of your available free prompts, so only do it if you are sure you want to proceed.

Step 9: Once you look at a single image, you'll still have some more options about how to alter it: * Vary — Creates four more images that will look somewhat like the selected image. * Zoom Out — Will shrink the image and generate more context-based imagery around it. * Arrows — Will "pan" the image and fill in newly exposed areas with context-based imagery. * Heart Symbol — Will favorite an image, to allow you to find the image easily in your Midjourney Gallery . * Web — Allows you to open the image directly in your Midjourney Gallery.

Step 10: If you plan on using a lot of Midjourney, you can use any bot channel in Midjourney’s Discord and type “/subscribe.” This will create a link that you can follow to pay for a subscription. Those who are really serious about using Midjourney in the long term will also want to take a look at the manual , which will provide you with a greater list of commands and some advice about how to create images.

‘An engine for the imagination’: the rise of AI image generators

An interview with midjourney founder david holz.

By James Vincent , a senior reporter who has covered AI, robotics, and more for eight years at The Verge.

An AI-generated image was made with the following prompt: “A robot steam engine, barreling down the tracks at terrific speed, emitting clouds of colorful smoke.”

AI-generated artwork is quietly beginning to reshape culture. Over the last few years, the ability of machine learning systems to generate imagery from text prompts has increased dramatically in quality, accuracy, and expression. Now, these tools are moving out of research labs and into the hands of everyday users, where they’re creating new visual languages of expression and — most likely — new types of trouble.

There are only thought to be a few dozen top-flight image-generating AI in existence right now. They’re tricky and expensive to create, requiring access to millions of images used to train the system (it looks for patterns in the pictures and copies them) and a great deal of computational grunt (for which costs vary, but a million-dollar price tag isn’t out of the question).

Right now, the output of these systems is mostly treated as novelty when it gets splashed on a magazine cover or used to generate memes . But as we speak, artists and designers are integrating this software into their workflow, and in a short amount of time, AI-generated and AI-augmented art will be everywhere. Questions about copyright (who owns the image? Who made it?) and about potential dangers (like biased output or AI-generated misinformation) will have to be dealt with quickly.

As the technology goes mainstream, though, one company will be able to take some credit for its ascendancy: a 10-person research lab named Midjourney, which makes an eponymous AI image generator accessed through a Discord chat server . Although the name might be unfamiliar, you’ve probably seen the output from Midjourney’s system floating about your social media feeds already. To generate your own, you just join Midjourney’s Discord, type a prompt, and the system makes an image for you.

  • An experimental horror ARG is testing the boundaries of AI art

Midjourney exists on Discord because “people want to make things together”

“A lot of people ask us, why don’t you just make an iOS app that makes you a picture?” Midjourney’s founder, David Holz, told The Verge in an interview. “But people want to make things together, and if you do that on iOS, you have to make your own social network. And that’s pretty hard. So if you want your own social experience, Discord is really great.”

Sign up for a free account, and you get 25 credits, with all images generated in public chatrooms. After that, you’ll have to pay — either $10 or $30 a month, depending on the number of images you want to make and whether or not they’re private to you.

This week, though, Midjourney is expanding access to its model, allowing anyone to create their own Discord server with their own AI image generator. “We’re going from a Midjourney universe to a Midjourney multiverse ,” as Holz puts it. And he thinks the results will be incredible: an outpouring of AI-augmented creativity that’s still only the tip of the iceberg.

To find out more about Holz’s ambitions with Midjourney — about why he’s building an “engine for the imagination” and why he thinks AI is more like water than a tiger — we rang him up for an interview. And, of course, we got Midjourney to illustrate our conversation.

This interview below has been condensed and lightly edited for clarity.

It’d be great to start with a bit about yourself and Midjourney. What’s your background? How did you get in this scene? And what is Midjourney — a company, a community? How would you describe it?

So, my name is David Holz, and I guess I’m a serial entrepreneur. My brief history would be: I had a design business in high school. I went to college for physics in maths. I was working on a PhD in fluid mechanics while working at NASA and Max Planck. I got overwhelmed at one point and put all those things aside. So I moved to San Francisco and started a technology company called Leap Motion around 2011. And we sold these hardware devices that would do motion capture on your hands , kind of inventing a lot of the gestural interface space.

I founded Leap Motion and ran that for 12 years, [but] eventually, I was looking for a different environment instead of a big venture-backed company, and I left to start Midjourney. Right now, it’s pretty small — we’re like 10 people, we have no investors, and we’re not really financially motivated. We’re not under pressure to sell something or be a public company. It’s just about having a home for the next 10 years to work on cool projects that matter —hopefully not just to me but to the world — and to have fun.

“we see this technology as an engine for the imagination”

We’re working on a lot of different projects. It’s going to be a wide and diverse research lab. But there are themes: things like reflection, imagination, and coordination. And what we’re starting to become well known for is this image creation stuff. And we don’t think it’s really about art or making deepfakes, but — how do we expand the imaginative powers of the human species? And what does that mean? What does it mean when computers are better at visual imagination than 99 percent of humans? That doesn’t mean we will stop imagining. Cars are faster than humans, but that doesn’t mean we stopped walking. When we’re moving huge amounts of stuff over huge distances, we need engines, whether that’s airplanes or boats or cars. And we see this technology as an engine for the imagination. So it’s a very positive and humanistic thing.

Prompt: “A detailed technical drawing illustrating a revolutionary ‘engine for the imagination.’”

Lots of labs and companies are working on similar technologies that turn text into imagery. Google has Imagen , OpenAI has DALL-E , and there are a handful of smaller projects like Craiyon . Where did this tech come from, where do you see it going in the future, and how does Midjourney’s vision differ from others in this space?

“in 10 years, you’ll be able to buy an Xbox with a giant AI processor, and all the games are dreams.”

So, there have been two breakthroughs [in AI that led to image generation tools]. One is understanding language, and the other is the ability to create images. And when you combine those things, you can create images through the understanding of language. We saw those technologies coming up, and we saw the trends — that these will be better at making images than people — and it’ll be really fast. Within the next year or two, you’ll be able to make content in real time: 30 frames a second, high resolution. It’ll be expensive, but it’ll be possible. Then, in 10 years, you’ll be able to buy an Xbox with a giant AI processor, and all the games are dreams.

From a raw technology standpoint, those are just kind of facts, and there’s no way to get around that. But from a human standpoint, what the hell does that mean? “All the games are dreams, and everything is malleable, and we’re going to have AR headsets” — what the hell does that mean? So the humanistic element of that is kind of unfathomable. And the software required to actually make that a thing that we can wield, it’s completely off the map, and I think that’s our focus.

Prompt: “An Xbox with a giant AI processor and all the games are dreams.”

We started off testing the raw technology in September last year, and we were immediately finding really different things. We found very quickly that most people don’t know what they want. You say: “Here’s a machine you can imagine anything with it — what do you want?” And they go: “dog.” And you go “really?” and they go “pink dog.” So you give them a picture of a dog, and they go “okay” and then go do something else.

Whereas if you put them in a group, they’ll go “dog” and someone else will go “space dog” and someone else will go “Aztec space dog,” and then all of a sudden, people understand the possibilities, and you’re creating this augmented imagination — an environment where people can learn and play with this new capacity. So we found that people really like imagining together, and so we made [Midjourney] social. And we have this giant Discord community, like it’s one of the largest Discords, with roughly a million people where they’re co-imagining things in these shared spaces.

Do you see this human collective as parallel to the machine collective? As a sort of counterbalance to these AI systems?

Well, there isn’t really a machine collective. Every time you ask the AI to make a picture, it doesn’t really remember or know anything else it’s ever made. It has no will, it has no goals, it has no intention, no storytelling ability. All the ego and will and stories — that’s us. It’s just like an engine. An engine has nowhere to go, but people have places to go. It’s kind of like a hive mind of people, super-powered with technology.

“They’re new, interesting, human aesthetics that I think will spill out into the world”

Inside the community, you have a million people making images, and they’re all riffing off each other, and by default, everybody can see everybody else’s images. You have to pay extra to pull out the community — and usually, if you do that, it means you’re some type of commercial user. So everyone’s ripping off each other, and there’s all these new aesthetics. It’s almost like aesthetic accelerationism. And they’re all bubbling up and swirling round, and they’re not AI aesthetics. They’re new, interesting, human aesthetics that I think will spill out into the world.

Prompt: “A community of a million humans, their imagination augmented by AI.”

Does this openness help keep things safe as well? Because there’s a lot of discussion about AI image generators being used to generate potentially harmful stuff, whether that’s straightforwardly nasty imagery — gore and violence — or misinformation. How do you stop that from happening?

Yeah, so, it’s amazing. When you put someone’s name on all the pictures they make, they’re much more regimented in how they use it. That helps a lot.

That said, we’ve still had some issues at times where, unfortunately, like, the way that social media works everywhere else, you can make a living by causing outrage, and there’s a motivation for some people to come into the community, pay for privacy, then spend a month trying to create the most outrageous and horrifying shock imagery possible, and then try to publish it on Twitter. Then we have to put our foot on that and say, “That’s not what we’re about; that’s not the type of community we want.”

Whenever we see that, we stomp it out. We ban words if we have to. We’ve collected words for things like photorealistic ultragore, and we’ve banned every word within a mile of that.

What about realistic faces — because that’s another vector for creating misinformation. Does the model generate realistic faces?

It will generate celebrity faces and stuff like that. But we don’t generally — we have a default style and look, and it’s artistic and beautiful, and it’s hard to push [the model] away from that, meaning you can’t really force it to make a deepfake right now. Maybe if you spend 100 hours trying, you can find some right combination of words that makes it look really realistic, but you have to really work hard to make it look like a photo. And personally, I don’t think the world needs more deepfakes, but it does need more beautiful things, so we’re focused toward making everything beautiful and artistic looking.

Prompt: “Soviet-era propaganda poster warning about the dangers of rogue AI.”

Where did you get the training data from the model from?

Our training data is pretty much from the same place as everybody else’s — which is pretty much the internet. Pretty much every big AI model just pulls off all the data it can, all the text it can, all the images it can. Scientifically speaking, we’re at an early point in the space, where everyone grabs everything they can, they dump it in a huge file, and they kind of set it on fire to train some huge thing, and no one really knows yet what data in the pile actually matters.

“The entire space has maybe only trained two dozen models like this. So it’s experimental science.”

So, for example, our most recent update made everything look much, much better, and you might think we did that by throwing in a lot of paintings [into the training data]. But we didn’t; we just used the user data based off what people liked making [with the model]. There was no human art put into it. But scientifically speaking, we’re very, very early. The entire space has maybe only trained two dozen models like this. So it’s experimental science.

How much did it cost to train yours?

I would say, training models in this space, I can’t speak about our specific costs, but I can say general things. Training image models is probably around $50,000 every time you do it right now. And you never get it right in one try, so you have to use three tries or 10 tries or 20 tries — and you do need a lot — so it adds up. It is expensive. It’s more than what most universities could spend, but it’s not so expensive that you need a billion dollars or a supercomputer.

The costs will, I’m sure, come down for both training and running. But the cost to run it is actually quite high. Every image costs money. Every image is generated on a $20,000 server, and we have to rent those servers by the minute. I think there’s never been a service for consumers where they’re using thousands of trillions of operations in the course of 15 minutes without thinking about it. Probably by a factor of 10, I’d say it’s more compute than anything your average consumer has touched. It’s actually kind of crazy.

Speaking of training data, one contentious aspect here is the issue of ownership. Current US law says you can’t copyright AI-generated art , but we don’t quite know whether people can assert copyright over images used in training data. Artists and designers work hard to develop a particular style, but what happens if their work can now be copied by AI bots? Have you had many discussions about this?

We do have a lot of artists in the community, and I’d say they’re universally positive about the tool, and they think it’s gonna make them much more productive and improve their lives a lot. And we are constantly talking to them and asking, “Are you okay? Do you feel good about this?” We also do these office hours where I’ll sit on voice for four hours with like 1,000 people and just answer questions.

A lot of the famous artists who use the platform, they’re all saying the same thing, and it’s really interesting. They say, “I feel like Midjourney is an art student, and it has its own style, and when you invoke my name to create an image, it’s like asking an art student to make something inspired by my art. And generally, as an artist, I want people to be inspired by the things that I make.”

But there’s surely a huge self-selection bias at work there because the artists who are active in the Midjourney Discord are bound to be the ones who will be excited by it. What about the people who say, “It’s bullshit; I don’t want my art to be eaten up by these huge machines.” Would you allow these people to remove themselves from your system?

We don’t have a process for that yet, but we’re open to it. So far, I would say it doesn’t have that many artists in it. It’s not that deep of a dataset. And the ones who have made it in have been giving us like “we don’t really feel intimidated by this” answers. Right now, it’s so new; I think it makes sense to play it by ear and be dynamic. So we’re constantly talking to people. And actually, the number one request we get right now from artists is they want it to be better at stealing their styles, so they can use it as part of their art flow even better. And that’s been surprising to me.

It might be different for other [AI image] generators because they try to make something look like the exact thing. But we have more of a default style, so it really does look like an art student being inspired by something else. And the reason we do that is because you always have defaults, so if you say “dog,” we could give you a photo of a dog, but that’s boring. From a human standpoint, why would you want that? Just go to Google image search. So we try to make things look artistic.

That’s something you’ve mentioned a few times in our conversation — the default art style of Midjourney — and I’m really fascinated by this idea that each AI image generator is its own microcosm of culture, with its own preferences and expressions. How would you describe Midjourney’s particular style, and how have you consciously developed it?

[Laughing] It’s a little ad hoc! We try lots of things, and every time we try a new thing, we render out a thousand images. And there’s not really an intention to it. It should look generally beautiful. It should respond to specific things and vague things. We definitely want it to not look like photos. We might make a realistic version at one point, but we wouldn’t want it to be the default. Perfect photos make me a little uncomfortable right now, though I could see legitimate reasons why you might want something more realistic.

I think the style would be a bit whimsical and abstract and weird, and it tends to blend things in ways you might not ask, in ways that are surprising and beautiful. It tends to use a lot of blues and oranges. It has some favorite colors and some favorite faces. If you give it a really vague instruction, it has to go to its favorites. So, we don’t know why it happens, but there’s a particular woman’s face it likes to draw — we don’t know where it comes from, from one of our 12 training datasets — but people just call it “Miss Journey.” And there’s one dude’s face, which is kind of square and imposing, and he also shows up some time, but he doesn’t have a name yet. But it’s like an artist who has their own faces and colors.

Prompt: “An oil painting portrait of Miss Journey.”

Speaking of these sorts of defaults, one big challenge within the image-generation space is dealing with bias. There’s research that shows that if you ask an AI image model to draw a CEO, the CEO is always a white man, and when you ask it to output a nurse, the nurse is always a woman and often a person of color. How have you dealt with that challenge? Is it a big problem for Midjourney or of more concern for corporate companies who want to monetize these systems?

Well, Miss Journey is definitely more of a problem than a feature, and we’re working on something now that will try to break up the faces and give you more variety. But there are downsides of that, too. Like, we had a version where it just completely destroyed Miss Journey, but if you really wanted, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Danny DeVito, then it would completely destroy that request [too]. And the tricky thing is getting that to work without wiping out whole genres of expression. Because it’s really easy to have a switch that bumps up diversity, but it’s difficult to have it only turn on when it should.

What I can say is that it’s never been easier to make an image with whatever diversity you want — you just use the word. You’re always one word away from creating, you know — like, I was playing around with “African cyberpunk wizards,” and it looks beautiful, and it’s fucking cool, and all I needed was like one word to tell the model what you want.

So, just to pull back a bit, you’ve talked a lot about how you don’t see the work you’re doing in Midjourney as, shall we say, practical. I mean, it’s obviously very hands-on, but your motivation is more abstract — about the relationship between humans and AI; about how we can use AI in this humanistic way, as you put it. Some people in the AI space tend to think about this technology in the grandest possible terms; they compare it to gods, to sentient life. How do you feel about this?

For a while, I’ve been trying to figure out “what is [Midjourney’s AI image generator]?” Because you can say it’s like an engine for imagination, but there’s something else, too. The first temptation is to look at it through an art lens. To ask: is this like the invention of photography? Because when photograph was invented, paintings got weirder because anybody could take a photo of a face, so why would I paint that picture now?

“people totally misunderstand what AI is”

And is it like that? No, it’s not like that. It’s definitely weirder. Right now, it feels like the invention of an engine: like, you’re making like a bunch of images every minute, and you’re churning along a road of imagination, and it feels good. But if you take one more step into the future, where instead of making four images at a time, you’re making 1,000 or 10,000, it’s different. And one day, I did that: I made 40,000 pictures in a few minutes, and all of a sudden, I had this huge breadth of nature in front of me — all these different creatures and environments — and it took me four hours just to get through it all, and in that process, I felt like I was drowning. I felt like I was a tiny child, looking into the deep end of a pool, like, knowing I couldn’t swim and having this sense of the depth of the water. And all of sudden, [Midjourney] didn’t feel like an engine but like a torrent of water. And it took me a few weeks to process, and I thought about it and thought about it, and I realized that — you know what? — this is actually water.

Right now, people totally misunderstand what AI is. They see it as a tiger. A tiger is dangerous. It might eat me. It’s an adversary. And there’s danger in water, too — you can drown in it — but the danger of a flowing river of water is very different to the danger of a tiger. Water is dangerous, yes, but you can also swim in it, you can make boats, you can dam it and make electricity. Water is dangerous, but it’s also a driver of civilization, and we are better off as humans who know how to live with and work with water. It’s an opportunity. It has no will, it has no spite, and yes, you can drown in it, but that doesn’t mean we should ban water. And when you discover a new source of water, it’s a really good thing.

And Midjourney is a new source of water?

[Laughing] Yeah, that’s a little scary when you say it that way.

I think we, collectively as a species, have discovered a new source of water, and what Midjourney is trying to figure out is, okay, how do we use this for people? How do we teach people to swim? How do we make boats? How do we dam it up? How do we go from people who are scared of drowning to kids in the future who are surfing the wave? We’re making surfboards rather than making water. And I think there’s something profound about that.

Prompt: “An abstract but detailed illustration depicting artificial intelligence as water: a powerful force that can be harnessed for good or evil.”

lance-31.png

Looking for a logo for your business, artwork for a project, or an image for a report? One way to get a helping hand is to turn to an online AI tool . You can choose from an array of sites.

How to use: Craiyon AI   |  Bing Image Creator  |  DALL-E 2  |  Stable Diffusion

But one service that offers truly impressive results is Midjourney. With this AI image creator, you describe the type of image you want to by entering text. In return, the site delivers four high-quality renderings.

How Midjourney works

Initially, Midjourney offered a free trial through which you could test the service by requesting a limited number of images. Unfortunately, the site ended the free trial for now, with the CEO blaming the move on a surge of new users. That leaves you with no option but to sign up for one of the paid subscription plans .

Also: How to use Bing Image Creator (and why it's better than DALL-E 2)

A basic plan will run you $10 a month or $96 a year, a standard plan is $30 a month or $288 a year, and a pro plan is $60 a month or $576 a year. Each tier ups the speed of the responses and offers other benefits. To get a taste of Midjourney, you may want to start with the basic plan to see how it well it works for you.

How to get started using Midjourney

Getting started with Midjourney can be confusing as you have to jump through a couple of hoops. To kick things off, go to the Midjourney website and click the link at the bottom for Join the beta .

You're then taken to the website for Discord, which provides the server on which the responses are generated. If necessary, click the button for Continue to Discord . At the sign in window, click the Register link. Enter your email address, type a username and password, and select your date of birth. Click Continue.

Create an account

2. Join the Midjourney community

You can then log in with your account. Close any initial windows or messages that pop up. Instead, click the button on the left side bar for Explore public servers . Among the featured communities, look for Midjourney or type Midjourney in the search field to find it. Select Midjourney to access it. Then click the button at the top for Join Midjourney .

After you've joined, the left sidebar will display newbie groups under Newcomer rooms. Click one of the rooms to access it. Scroll up and down the page to see the images that the Midjourney AI bot has created for other users.

View the messages in a newbie group.

4. Subscribe to a paid plan

With the free trial no longer available, you'll have to subscribe to a paid plan before you can try out the Midjourney service. In the Message field at the bottom of the screen, type /subscribe and press Enter. Click the button for  Open subscription page .

Click the button to go to the subscription page.

At the subscription page, choose either yearly billing or monthly billing. Click the Subscribe button for the plan you want and then fill out the payment form. After the payment goes through, return to the Discord page and the newbie group you had accessed.

Choose the subcription plan you want.

5. Describe the image you need

You can now finally describe the image you want created. In the Message field at the bottom, type "/imagine" or just type "/" and then choose imagine from the menu. A prompt field then appears.

In that field, type the description of the image you need generated. Press enter. Wait at least a few seconds for the images to be fully rendered. By default, Midjourney creates four images for each request, with each one appearing in a small thumbnail.

Describe the image you want, and the AI renders four different ones.

6. Upscale images

Under the images are buttons -- U1, U2, U3, and U4 along with V1, V2, V3, and V4. The U buttons are for upscaling the image. The numbers correspond to the four different images by row. The first image is 1, the image to its right is 2, the first image on the next row is 3, and the image to its right is 4. Click the U button for the image you wish to upscale to see the effect. Scroll down the screen to see the upscaled image.

Ask the AI to upscale one of the images.

7. Alter images

The V buttons are used to make changes to a specific image. Maybe there's a particular image you like among the four but want to see how it can be enhanced or improved. Click the V button for that image. Scroll down the screen until you see another series of four images, each one displaying a slightly different version of the image you selected.

Ask the AI to revise one of the images.

You can also play with an image that's been upscaled. Under the image, click the Make variations button to generate revisions to the image. Click the Light Upscale Redo to upscale the image slightly using the current version of Midjourney. Click the Beta Upscale Redo to upscale the image even higher using the latest beta version. Click the Web button to display the image at a larger size in a separate window.

Use different commands to further revise the image.

8. Choose your image

With the larger image, click the magnifying glass cursor to zoom in on the image. Right-click on the image, and you can use your browser's controls to save it, copy it, or email it.

View the image in a separate window where you can save it.

9. Return to the Discord page and the newbie group

There are a variety of commands you can run at the bottom field to view and manage your interactions. Click in the field and type "/". Scroll down the list to see all the available commands.

View the different commands.

10. (Optional) Cancel your account

Finally, should you decide not to continue with Midjourney, you can cancel your subscription. Sign into your Midjourney account page. Click the Manage link next to Plan details for your plan and then select Cancel Plan. Confirm the cancellation.

What is midjourney, how to use midjourney beta, key takeaways.

Go to the Midjourney web page, click “Join Beta,” and join the Midjourney Discord server. Enter one of the newcomer rooms and type /prompt (your prompt here) to generate an image using AI.

AI-based image generators like DALL-E 2 have boomed in popularity. People love to enter bizarre prompts and see what gets spit out. Midjourney is one of the more advanced tools for this, and you can try it now.

Before we talk about Midjourney, let's start with DALL-E 2, the one you may have heard about. DALL-E 2 sits at the high end of these AI-based image generator tools. It can create completely brand new images from a simple text prompt. You enter "a robot eating a taco," and it creates an image depicting a robot eating a taco.

At the more basic level is Craiyon , formerly known as "DALL-E mini." This is a free web tool that anyone can use, but it's not nearly as sophisticated as DALL-E 2. The results are often strange and somewhat creepy, but it's still very fun to play with.

Related: The Best AI Image Generators You Can Use Right Now

Midjourney sits somewhere in the middle of DALL-E 2 and Craiyon. It also uses AI and machine learning to generate images based on text prompts. The results are usually quite good, but not as mind-blowing as DALL-E 2.

The only thing you need to use the Midjourney Beta is a Discord account. That's where you will give text prompts to the Midjourney bot. You can sign up for a free account on Discord's website . After that, you can use Discord in a web browser or download the app for Windows , Mac , Linux , Android , and iPhone .

UPDATE: 3/30/23

Once you're all set up with Discord, we'll head over to the Midjourney website and select "Join the Beta."

This will take you to Discord, where we can select "Accept Invite."

We're in. There are a couple of things to know about the beta. You start with a free trial that includes around 25 prompts. After that, you can buy a full membership if you'd like.

To get started, go to one of the "Newcomer Rooms" channels in the sidebar. We'll be using "#newbies-42," but there are a number of others.

In the text box, enter

and then type your prompt and submit it.

You can watch the progress as the four images are created.

When the images are finished, they'll be displayed in a new message. Now you have some additional options.

  • U = Upscale: Creates a larger version of the image.
  • V = Variation: Creates a new image based on the one you selected.
  • Refresh: Get four new images from the same prompt.

The results will be delivered in a new message just like before, and you'll have some new options to make more variations or upscale it to the max.

If at any time you'd like to save the images, simply select the image and tap the download icon on mobile or "Open Original" on desktop to see the full-size image to save.

That's pretty much all there is to the Midjourney Beta! Simply type

and you can follow it with a prompt. Keep in mind certain words aren't allowed, but it's mostly fair game, and you can see what others are creating. There's some pretty crazy AI out there these days, go have fun!

Frequently Asked Questions

Bob, our kitten, thinking

Are AI-generated images copyrighted?

Yes and no. According to the U.S. Copyright Office, people can copyright the image result they generated using AI, but they cannot copyright the images used by the computer to create the final image. In other words, you can only copyright artwork that is solely made by a human being, not a computer generator — AI-generated images and the final products of AI tools, although uses existing content and artworks made by other artists, are not protected by copyright.

What are AI-generated images?

In short, AI generated images are images crafted, or put together, by a computer. There are different types of AI approaches like generative AI and machine learning AI, so the way AI tools generate content can be different across the board. Typically, AI generates images by taking the prompt you give it, finding patterns and similarities between past-collected prompts and existing content, then combines multiple pieces of content to produce a unified piece of art.

What is the best AI image generator?

It all depends on how detailed your text description is and the image generator’s specialty. For example, Kapwing’s AI image generator is the best for easily entering a topic and getting generated images back in mere seconds. Whereas, Midjourney does the best with realistic images and Dall-E2 does best with cartoon and illustrated text prompts.

What are the best prompts for image generation?

Try these example prompts to get the most accurate images:

  • "A realistic portrait of a family under soft, natural lighting."
  • "Concept art for a tiny magical forest city."
  • "An oil painting of Whitney Houston."

After a couple of examples, try this image generator with your own words and explore the creative possibilities.

What's the easiest text to image website to use?

Among the top AI image generators, we recommend Kapwing's website for text to image AI. From their homepage, dive straight into the Kapwing AI suite and get access to a text to image generator, video generator, image enhancer, and much more. Never wait for downloads and software installations again—Kapwing is consistently improving each tool.

Midjourney vs. DALL·E 3: Which image generator is better? [2024]

Hero image with the Midjourney and OpenAI logos

I've been testing both of these image generators, both professionally and personally, since they were released, and there's a lot to unpack. So let's dive in.

How do DALL·E 3 and Midjourney work?

Both DALL·E 3 and Midjourney were trained on millions or billions of text-image pairs, which allows them to comprehend concepts like dogs, deerstalker hats, and dark moody lighting. This is how they can parse what a prompt like "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees" is asking them to create.

When it comes to actually generating images, they use a process called diffusion . They start with a random field of noise and then, over a number of steps, edit it to better match their interpretation of your prompt. This is why you can get different results every time, even if you try the same prompt a second time: the randomness of the starting seed can totally change the end result. In a previous article comparing DALL·E 3 and Stable Diffusion , I described the process as kind of like looking up at a cloudy sky, finding a cloud that looks kind of like a dog, and then being able to snap your fingers to keep making it more and more dog-like. While there's more to it than that, it's not a bad way to think of things.

Four images of a dog in a cloud looking more and more like a dog each time

Of course, just because both models use the same technique to generate images, doesn't mean you're going to get similar results from both DALL·E and Midjourney. How each model interprets your prompt, the weight it puts on the various parameters, the data they were trained on, and the philosophies of the companies responsible for developing them all massively affect what the output will look like.

Here's DALL·E 3's take on "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees."

DALL-E 3's images based on the prompt

And here's Midjourney's.

Midjourney's images based on the prompt

As you can see, DALL·E 3 has done a much better job of having my Canadian man riding a moose, though for my money, Midjourney's output looks way more like a real impressionist painting.

I'll dive much deeper into these kinds of differences as we go, but don't call these results a win for either AI model just yet.

DALL·E 3 vs. Midjourney at a glance

DALL·E 3 and Midjourney both do similar things, but there are some big differences. Here's a short summary of the major distinctions, but read on for a more detailed breakdown.

DALL·E 3 is easier to use

DALL·E 3 is available through ChatGPT , the Bing Image Creator , Microsoft Paint , and other services using its API. All offer a broadly similar experience, though ChatGPT is the most official option and the nicest to use, so it's what I'll mostly focus on for this comparison. You need to be a ChatGPT Plus subscriber to access it, though, so if you're not, check out one of the other free options.

Even though there are multiple ways to access DALL·E 3, all of them work much the same, and they're all incredibly simple: you just ask DALL·E 3 to create an image for you.

DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT producing two pictures of a wolf running through the woods

Midjourney, on the other hand, is awkward right from the start. It doesn't have a web app. Instead, you have to access it through Discord, a team chat app . It's not hard to sign up for a Discord account and join Midjourney's server, but it's still an odd way to access an AI art generator .

ai image generator journey

So really, if you're looking to just try out an image generator, DALL·E 3 is much simpler to get started with.

Midjourney is a lot more powerful

For all its awkwardness, Midjourney still brings a lot to the table. It's probably the most powerful AI image generator available right now, at least if you aren't prepared to train your own custom model .

Let's start with the parameters. There's a full list here , but by typing -- followed by the relevant command, you can control things like the aspect ratio of your images, how varied they are, what seed to start with, and even whether you want to create repeating tiles for seamless patterns.

Creating tiles in Midjourney

And then there are the tools that allow you to upscale, vary, and edit your images. Once you've run a prompt, you're presented with two sets of four buttons: U1 , U2 , U3 , and U4 , which upscale the corresponding image to 1024px wide, and V1 , V2 , V3, and V4 , which rerun your prompt to create more variations based on the corresponding image.

Upscaling and rerunning options in Midjourney

Once you upscale an image, you can upscale it again to 2048px wide—or even to 4096px wide using the Upscale (2x) or Upscale (4x) buttons. You can create more variations that either closely match the starting image with Vary (Subtle) or are more distinct with Vary (Strong) . You can even change specific parts of the image using Vary (Region) .

Editing just a part of an image in Midjourney

And the Zoom Out and Pan (the arrows) buttons allow you to extend your creation beyond its boundaries. Turn on Remix mode , and you have even more control, as you can change your prompt each time you make variations.

The Zoom Out option in Midjourney

And that's all before we even look at features like image prompts or blend , which allow you to combine the "concepts and aesthetics" of multiple images you upload.

The wolf in the picture is now a dog

DALL·E 3 doesn't come close to matching this feature set. While you have some control over the aspect ratio, everything else relies on just getting ChatGPT to rerun a slightly different prompt. Even the Bing tools that use DALL·E 3 don't give you many more options. The only ones of note are that Image Creator allows you to import your image directly into Microsoft Designer, and Paint allows you to generate images in the app, so you can edit them (or at least paint over the top).

When you use ChatGPT to ask for edits, it just generates new images with a new prompt.

DALL-E 3 changing the image completely when asked to edit

Shockingly, at least for now, DALL·E 2 comes closer to Midjourney. It at least allows you to inpaint (where you vary the internal parts of an image) and outpaint (where you add content beyond the image boundaries). The model is nowhere near as good, but you have more control.

Both make great AI-generated images

For all that, both DALL·E 3 and Midjourney are capable of creating incredible images. DALL·E 3 is quicker and easier to use, but you have less control over the results. Midjourney is a bit obtuse at times, but you have a lot more control over what things look like.

Still, there are a handful of differences worth noting. DALL·E 3, since it integrates with ChatGPT, does a really great job at interpreting prompts. It feels better able to handle both shorter prompts and longer, more complicated prompts.

It's not that Midjourney messes up very often, but it takes a lot more steering. I found that instead of writing long descriptions, it was more effective to give it a series of key words.

Using lists of key words to prompt in Midjourney

Also, because it has decent editing tools, I was much more willing to accept a less-than-ideal first image and then use remixing, variations, and the other tools to create a final image I was happy with.

Pricing depends on your needs

DALL·E 3's pricing is super simple: it costs $20/month as part of ChatGPT Plus, or it's available for free as part of different Microsoft tools, though some of them will watermark your images. As of now, there are no limits published on how many images you can generate each day or month with DALL·E 3, but presumably those limits exist to prevent people from creating images non-stop.

Midjourney has no free option, but the Basic Plan starts at $10/month and entitles you to 200 minutes of GPU time. Which, of course, is where things get complicated. Midjourney says that's good for roughly 200 generations a month, but it totally depends on what you're getting it to do. If you create lots of variations and upscale them all to the maximum amount, you'll burn through those GPU hours faster than if you create lots of low-res images.

Midjourney pricing

And to make things more complicated, starting with the $30/month Standard plan, you get more fast GPU hours, but you can generate unlimited images in Relax mode—which only runs when there's free GPU power.

Given all the extra features both apps bring, I'm incredibly reluctant to make any judgments between DALL·E 3 and Midjourney based on price. If it meets your needs, the $10/month Midjourney plan is probably the best balance of features and price, but you can use DALL·E 3 for free through the Bing Image Creator, or for $20/month as part of ChatGPT Plus—which also has all of ChatGPT's language generation features.

Commercial use is complicated

If you're planning to use DALL·E 3 or Midjourney for commercial use, things get a bit complicated. Both models allow commercial use (although not if you use DALL·E 3 through Microsoft ), but the full legal implications haven't really been explored.

In a ruling in February 2023 , the U.S. Copyright Office decided that images created by Midjourney, and by extension, other generative AIs, can't be copyrighted. This means you have limited protections if someone takes your images and uses them in ways you don't want them to. Technically, using someone else's image goes against Midjourney's terms of service , but that's not exactly a very strong legal shield if you're trying to build a brand or create character designs using the app. The worst that Midjourney is likely to be able to do is ban whoever takes your images.

From a technical standpoint, I'd probably recommend Midjourney if you want to somehow monetize your AI creations, simply because its model gives you more freedom. DALL·E 3 will flat-out block you from creating a huge amount of content , including images of public figures.

Midjourney is weird

Because I've been trying to compare DALL·E 3 and Midjourney as closely and sensibly as possible, there are other weird and awkward bits with Midjourney that I haven't been able to touch on. Three of the bigger things to note are:

Unless you're on the $60/month Pro plan and activate Stealth Mode, all your images are automatically published to Midjourney's member gallery, where anyone can see them, download them, and copy your prompts.

Every setting and feature is handled through commands to the Discord bot. It will never not be strange.

In addition to its standard models, Midjourney has an anime-specific model called Niji that you can enable by adding --niji 5 to the end of a prompt or by typing /settings and selecting it.

The help docs are really good , and I've never run into real difficulties with Midjourney, but I can't stress how strange using it feels if you're expecting a more typical app. They're apparently developing a regular web app, so I'm excitedly waiting for that to launch.

You can automate DALL·E

DALL·E connects to Zapier , which means you can use DALL·E directly from the apps you spend the most time in. DALL·E vs. Midjourney: Which should you use?

The choice between DALL·E 3 and Midjourney should be relatively straightforward for most people:

If you want the best AI image generator currently available, want to be able to tweak and edit your images, and are happy to work through its many quirks, Midjourney is a great choice.

If you want the easy option that reliably produces great results, DALL·E 3 is what you need.

Alternatively, you could also check out Stable Diffusion . It's less quirky than Midjourney but more powerful than DALL·E 3.

5 of the best free AI image generators

T he use of AI image generators is becoming more and more prevalent as workers and creatives alike seek for more inspiration and a streamlined way of generating high-quality content for a multitude of purposes.

From website images to social media feeds, AI-generated images are becoming a mainstream fixture, and as more generators enter the market, it's also becoming a very cost-effective way for people to assist with their creative tasks, compliment their social media presence and help them boost their businesses' marketing efforts.

As a result, we've taken a look at the five best free AI image generators on the market right now. All of them have different purposes and quirks, but all have free plans that make them accessible to everyone looking to use AI image generation as part of their daily workflow.

To showcase their capability, quality and accuracy, we have created images using the following prompt on all platforms…

A black cat with white paws sitting next to Buckingham Palace in London on a sunny summer's day. There are people walking by in the background. There is red London double-decker bus and traditional black taxi driving by.

Ideogram is free to use for up to 25 prompts a day, but with that you are limited to the "slow queue" and every image you generate is viewable by all other Ideogram members. It is essentially a social media network for AI image generation, with the homepage acting as a feed of other images generated by the public, which you can ‘love', similar to Instagram.

A single prompt will generate four different image iterations, and it will also provide a ‘magic' prompt, which is essentially a more detailed prompt example it gives you for one of its images, that might give you inspiration for the wording of future prompts.

In terms of quality, it's hugely impressive, although it can often struggle with human faces, especially if there isn't much detailed information given about looks, etc. But it can accurately generate all types of images, including real-life, 3D, cartoon and CGI.

There are paid features , which essentially give you access to more daily prompts, quicker generation and the ability to make your images private, but if you don't see yourself needing more than 25 prompts a day, the free version works perfectly fine.

NightCafe has an array of free-to-use features that allow users to be as creative and artistic as possible. The free plan uses the SDXL 1.0 model and you also get five free prompts for Dall-E 3 and Stable Video Diffusion.

One of the standout features on NightCafe is the option to train a model to generate your own face, a specific object, or a particular art style, but it's limited to two free fine tunes before you need to purchase credits to keep training.

Before inputting your prompt, you're given a vast list of style presets to choose from, depending on your image needs. We picked ‘Striking' for our prompt, but there are the likes of Anime, Color Painting, CGI, Dark Fantasy, Hyperreal, Epic Origami, Modern Comic, Photo, Oil Painting and many more to choose from.

Users get five free credits a day, with one credit equalling one image generation, as opposed to one prompt. When generating images you can choose how many images it creates, so there is the need to be quite economical with your credits, but the results are accurate, detailed and realistic.

Users can, of course, purchase more credits , with 100 credits costing $5.99 monthly.

Runway AI isn't just a text-to-image generator, but an all-round AI machine that allows users to use its AI creative suite for a multitude of purposes, including text-to-video, video-to-video and generative audio.

The text-to-image tool is perfect for users looking for more control and creativity over their images. You can remix the style and composition of your images, while all images generated are returned in high-resolution.

However, the user interface is quite complex and in some areas requires specific creation methods and coding, which makes it more suited to more advanced or skilled users. It's the ideal generative AI tool for the likes of designers, illustrators and artists.

It is free to use, but the free version is only limited to 510 credits, which gets a little over 100 image generations (each generation costs five credits). You do get the option to edit style, resolution and image ratio with every generation, though.

Beyond that, you have to upgrade , with the cheapest plan coming in at $15 monthly for 625 credits and the use of additional and more advanced features.

DeepAI is a free-to-use AI image generator that allows users to create unlimited images with a wide variety of styles to choose from.

It has a very basic interface and only generates one image per prompt, but it is a great platform for those looking to experiment with AI, such as enthusiasts or creative freelancers looking for a cost-effective way to generate images.

It isn't the fastest generator on the market and as it only generates one image at a time, it might take several prompts before you get the image you're looking for, but the overall quality, accuracy, and capabilities are impressive, especially if you choose to generate your image in HD. That requires you to create an account, whereas the standard image generation doesn't, but the difference in quality between the two is, well, HD.

From there, you can play around with different style presets and image enhancements to help you get the best possible results.

If you're looking for a bit more from DeepAI, their only paid plan is $4.99 a month, or you can pay-as-you-go for $5-per-additional use of a premium feature.

Microsoft Designer

Powered by Dall-E, Microsoft's image generator is completely free to use and can be accessed via Copilot, formerly known as Bing Chat, or directly on the tool's website.

As image generators go, Microsoft Designer is as simple as they come from a user interface and feature point of view (there are no editing options, for example), but it does give you guidance on how to construct the perfect prompt by suggesting you use adjectives, nouns, verbs and styles. The style is particularly important as it will determine the style of your end result.

Overall it's a great free-to-use image generator for creatives, designers, artists, social media professionals, and anyone looking to have a play around with the AI and test its capabilities.

There are no paid plans either, it's completely free to use. All you have to do is login using your Microsoft account.

The bottom line

When it comes to picking a favorite, it’s difficult to look past Microsoft Designer for accuracy and quality. It took my prompt and delivered an image that had all the details I requested.

The others also delivered high-quality images, but most of them omitted key details outlined in the prompt, such as the cat’s white paws, the black taxi or the red double-decker bus. Their accuracy wasn’t quite up to scratch for what it was being asked to do.

Ideogram was the closest to matching Microsoft designer in terms of accuracy but its quality was ever so slightly down and also has daily limitations, which Microsoft’s image generator doesn’t.

Set Creativity in Motion With Leonardo.Ai

Frequently asked questions, what is an ai video generator.

This revolutionary technology simplifies complex animations, lowering the barrier of entry and making both video production and animation accessible to all.

How to use an AI video generator?

To use our dedicated AI video generator, simply select the Motion feature from the side panel and then either choose an image from the generation feed, or upload your own. Adjust the motion settings, click generate, then sit back and watch as the AI animates your video in moments.

How can AI video generation enhance creativity?

AI video generation – particularly through our Motion feature – amplifies creative possibilities by streamlining the labour-intensive aspects of animation. This allows creators to focus on artistic and narrative elements, bringing a new level of control and personalisation to video content.

Will I own the videos I make?

Your video ownership rights differ based on your Leonardo.Ai subscription status:

Paid subscribers : Yes, you retain full ownership, copyright, and other intellectual property rights of videos that you generate. Leonardo.Ai may use your private video only to provide you with our services. Public videos can be used by Leonardo.Ai and other users, only as enabled by a feature of the service.

Free tier users: Leonardo.Ai holds rights to use, reproduce, modify, and distribute any videos you create. However, you’re granted a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to access your creations for commercial use. Other users can also access your publicly available assets and use them only as enabled by a feature of the service.

For more detailed information, please refer to our Terms of Service .

What kinds of videos can I make with Motion?

All sorts! With our dedicated AI video generation tool, your creativity is the only real limit. From engaging social media content and product demos to animated illustrations and storytelling sequences, Motion can bring almost any concept to dynamic life.

Can I use Leonardo for free? What benefits do I get from a paid subscription?

Absolutely! Leonardo offers a free tier that includes a daily quota of tokens. These can be used for your creative projects within our platform. This free offering doesn’t come with an expiry date, so you can use it for as long as you like.

Our paid subscriptions come with extra benefits: an increased token allowance, faster image generation, and access to premium features. To find out more about our subscription plans, click the “Upgrade” button at the top left of the page.
