pga tour leaderboard honda classic 2023

The 2023 The Honda Classic final leaderboard is headed by winner Chris Kirk , who earns the PGA Tour win at PGA National's Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

In the final round, Chris Kirk and Eric Cole wound up tied together at 14-under 266 after Kirk's second shot found the water on the par-5 18th and Cole was unable to get up-and-down from off the green for a winning birdie.

In the playoff, Kirk was forced to lay up after his tee shot, then hitting his 100-yard third shot to 6 inches for a tap-in birdie that turned out to be the winner after Cole lipped out his birdie putt that would have forced another extra hole.

Kirk won the $1,512,000 winner's share of the $8,400,000 purse.

2024 RBC Heritage fantasy golf rankings, picks, strategy: Back Will Zalatoris, fade Ludvig Aberg

W hen creating Fantasy golf lineups for the 2024 RBC Heritage, one shouldn't overlook players that struggled last week at the Masters. Yes, Scottie Scheffler is the +400 favorite after winning another green jacket, but Scheffler also didn't even notch a top-10 in his lone start at Hilton Head. Meanwhile, golfers like Jordan Spieth and Emiliano Grillo missed the cut at Augusta but have two top 10s over their last three starts at the RBC Heritage. Balancing recent results versus course history is one of the key components to forming a winning RBC Heritage Fantasy golf strategy.

Spieth has three top-2 finishes over the last two calendar years, and two of those have come at this tournament. He won in a playoff versus Patrick Cantlay in 2022 and lost in a playoff to Matt Fitzpatrick at last year's tournament. However, coming off the worst Masters score of his career (+9), can Spieth bounce back to make a positive impact in Fantasy golf lineups? Before making any 2024 RBC Heritage fantasy golf picks, you have to see the RBC Heritage fantasy golf rankings from SportsLine handicapper Eric Cohen .

Cohen is an avid golf bettor who correctly predicted the pre-tournament outright winner of the 2024 Masters (Scottie Scheffler, +350), Players Championship (Scheffler +550), 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic (Rickie Fowler +1400), 2023 PGA Championship (Brooks Koepka +2000), 2023 Honda Classic (Chris Kirk +3500), 2022 Open Championship (Cameron Smith +2200), 2022 U.S. Open (Matt Fitzpatrick +2500), and 2022 Phoenix Open (Scheffler's first career victory at +2800).

Cohen is a contributor to SportsLine's YouTube shows including "Early Edge" and is the host of "The Early Wedge" golf show. Anyone who has followed Cohen's predictions has made positive gains on their golf picks.

Now, Cohen has ranked his top golfers for the 2024 RBC Heritage.  Cohen's picks are only available at SportsLine .

2024 RBC Heritage expert picks

One player Cohen is getting behind for his fantasy picks is Will Zalatoris as a serious contender at +2500. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon returns to the Carolinas fresh off a ninth place at Augusta. It was his third top 10 of the season -- all at signature events or majors -- so he performs his best against the toughest fields. He played Harbour Town Golf Links once before and was near the top 10 heading into Round 3 before a tough weekend knocked him down the leaderboard.

This course is laden with water hazards, and it also features some of the smallest greens of any PGA Tour course. Thus, accuracy is essential, and Zalatoris ranks 10th in driving accuracy percentage. He also has top 25 rankings in both strokes gained: tee-to-green and strokes gained: approach the green, so those tiny greens shouldn't pose much of a problem to him. If his putter is on, as it has been in his recent top 10 finishes, then Zalatoris could be a Fantasy golf sleeper pick for the 2024 RBC Heritage.

On the other hand, the golf expert is fading Aberg, who finished second at the Masters, at +1400 odds this week. He was impressive in his debut at Augusta and will now compete at Harbour Town Golf Links for the first time. However, Aberg struggled at a comparable course of TPC River Highlands at the Travelers Championship. Like Harbour Town, TPC River Highlands is a Pete Dye design, and Aberg finished 24th at the Travelers and was 10 shots back of the winner.

Aberg also hasn't yet displayed the consistency on tour as other top-ranked golfers. Before his runner-up at the Masters, he had four top 5 finishes in official tour events. However, he failed to even place in the top 10 in the four PGA tournaments following those top 5s. Aberg's still in his first calendar year as a professional and has lots to learn in terms of navigating a PGA Tour schedule, and with no prior experience at a tricky course, Cohen doesn't see the Swede as warranting a spot in Fantasy golf lineups.  See all of Cohen's RBC Heritage picks at SportsLine .

How to set 2024 RBC Heritage Fantasy golf lineups

For this week, Cohen is backing several underdogs in his 2024 RBC Heritage fantasy golf picks, including a triple-digit longshot whose odds "don't make a ton of sense" and could help spice up your Fantasy golf lineups.  See who it is, and get all of Cohen's fantasy golf picks, at SportsLine .

Who wins RBC Heritage 2024, and who are the top players to target for your PGA fantasy golf picks?  Visit SportsLine now to get Eric Cohen's fantasy golf rankings , all from the fantasy expert who has called seven outright winners since 2022, and find out.

The Chessboard Killer: Story of Russian Serial Killer Alexander Pichushkin

THe chessboard killer

Alexander Yuryevich Pichushkin, also known as The Chessboard Killer, is a Russian serial killer who is responsible for the deaths of 48 people. In order to eventually surpass his idol, Andrei Chikatilo, he set a goal of killing at least 64 people, which corresponded to the squares on a chessboard.

Alexander Pichushkin, The Chessboard killer

For me, life without murder is like a life without food. I was the father of these people, since it was I who opened the door for them to another world.

Early Life of Pichushkin, The Chessboard Killer

Pichushkin was born on April 9, 1974, in Mytishchi, Moscow. Pichushkin was initially remembered as a highly social child. This changed after Pichushkin fell backward off a swing, which then swung back and hit him in the forehead.

Pichushkin became incredibly aggressive and rash after the accident. His mother made the quick decision to transfer him from a regular school to one for children with learning disabilities.

Children from the mainstream school were known to have physically and verbally bullied Pichushkin prior to his transfer, referring to him as “that retard.” As a result of the abuse, Pichushkin’s rage and hostility grew.

Pichushkin’s maternal grandfather acknowledged that Pichushkin was highly intelligent when he reached early adolescence and felt that his innate talents were being wasted because he wasn’t involved in any activities at home, and the school he was enrolled in focused more on overcoming disability than on promoting achievement.

So his grandfather took him in and encouraged him to pursue intellectual interests outside of school. Chess was the most intense of these interests. Pichushkin was taught how to play, and after demonstrating his ability, he was introduced to exhibition games in Bitsa Park against elderly men.

Pichushkin turned out to be an excellent chess player, and for the first time in his life, he found a way to express his rage by dominating the chessboard in all of his games.

Pichushkin began to develop a more sinister hobby at this time, which was unknown to anyone at the time: whenever he knew he was going to come into contact with children, he would bring a video camera with him and threaten them.

He held a young child by one leg, upside down, and said to the camera on one occasion that has since been made public: “You are now under my command… I’m going to throw you out the window… and you’re going to die 15 meters down…” He then repeatedly watched these videos to reaffirm his dominance. However, by 1992, this practice was no longer enough to satisfy his desires.

Becoming a serial killer

Pichushkin, then 18 years old, committed his first murder on July 27, 1992. He planned to murder people with the help of a friend, Mikhail Odichuk, who thought he was joking. Odichuk attempted to back out of the situation when he realized his classmate was serious.

Pichushkin was enraged and struck his friend with a hammer before throwing him into a well. Pichushkin was questioned by police three days later about Odichuk’s death. Although there was some evidence pointing to his guilt, the investigation never yielded any results.

Later in 1992, Pichushkin claimed to have committed another murder. Olga, his girlfriend, had broken up with him and began dating Sergei, a mutual friend. Sergei’s death was ruled a suicide by Pichushkin, who disposed of his romantic rival by throwing him out a window.

As the killings progressed, his attacks grew more brutal

Pichushkin’s attacks became more ruthless as the killings progressed. He seemed unbothered about disposing of the bodies, leaving them out in the open to be discovered, with a broken vodka bottle protruding from some victims’ skulls.

By 2003, residents of Moscow, particularly those living near the park were concerned that a serial killer was on the loose. Pichushkin was dubbed the “Bittsevsky Maniac” and “The Bittsa Beast” by the press.

Konstantin Polikarpov, a neighbor, was invited to Bitsa Park for a drink on November 15, 2003. Pichushkin thrashed him three times with a hammer before tossing him into the well. He walked away once more, assuming his victim was dead. Polikarpov was able to climb out, but he suffered head trauma and has no recollection of the attack.

When a former cop named Nikolai Zakharchenko was found dead, the police began to take the murders more seriously. Murdered on November 16, 2005, his body was left out in the open rather than disposed of in the well, presumably as a challenge to the police. Pichushkin had grown cocky by leaving bodies in plain sight, but he was still cautious enough to avoid capture.

The arrest of Chessboard killer

Pichushkin was apprehended by authorities in June 2006 after he killed a woman he worked with at a supermarket. She had written her son a note informing him that she was going for a walk with Pichushkin. Despite knowing the dangers of murdering his coworker, he went ahead and did it anyway.

The police discovered a chessboard with dates on 61 or 62 of the 64 squares after his arrest. Pichushkin was a game fan who tried to kill as many people as there were squares on the board. Despite the dates, Pichushkin was only charged with 51 counts of murder and attempted murder by the police (three of his victims survived).

The confession of Pichushkin was broadcast on Russian television. He talked about his need to kill for a long time in it. “A life without a murder for me is like a life without food for you,” Pichushkin is said to have said. He later argued, without remorse, that he should be charged with more murders, based on his claim of killing 61 or 63 people (his story varied). During his 2007 trial, Pichushkin reportedly said, “I thought it would be unfair to forget about the other 11 people.”

In October 2007, Pichushkin was found guilty. After only three hours of deliberation, the jury found him guilty of 48 counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Pichushkin was sentenced to life in prison shortly after the trial. The heinous nature of his crimes has reignited calls for Russia’s death penalty to be reinstated.

Chessboard killer now

The serial killer claimed that his killings were “not murder,” but rather “the hand of God,” and that he did not deserve the death penalty, which is no longer used in Russia.

pga tour leaderboard honda classic 2023

“Repentance is not only unnecessary in my case; it is wrongful,” he added, speaking from a cage in the prison psychologist’s office.

“I killed because I didn’t know what else to do.” There was no other option in such a situation.”

Pichushkin is incarcerated in the Arctic penal colony “Polar Owl” and spends his days in solitary confinement.

Scheffler picks up fourth win of last five starts

Lillard leads bucks in game 1; wild finish at talladega, nelly korda ties record with fifth straight lpga win, pga tour holding last honda classic as a new sponsor awaits.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Someone will be getting a big check this week at the Honda Classic.

And then someone will be writing a big check to take over the Honda Classic.

It's expected that there will be a tournament at PGA National in 2024 and beyond, but this weekend will mark the last time someone wins the Honda. The automaker's 42-year sponsorship — the longest-running continuous deal on the PGA Tour — ends with this event, and potential successors will be in Palm Beach Gardens to decide if they want to buy the naming rights.

"It's disappointing on many aspects of it," Florida native Billy Horschel said. "I'm sort of disappointed in the PGA Tour in the sense that — I'm not going to say they didn't prioritize the Honda Classic, they prioritize every sponsor that we have. ... But, you know, when I was out on tour early in my career, this was this was a hot event. I mean, you had all-top 20 players in the world playing here."

This week's event has three top-20 players — No. 18 Sungjae Im, Horschel is ranked 19th and No. 20 Shane Lowry. Scheduling has been a challenge for Honda for years; it was preceded by the Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational, and gets followed by Bay Hill and The Players Championship.

Those events all have $20 million purses, except for $25 million at The Players. Honda's purse is $8.4 million.

"This was an event to play at, and then unfortunately over the years, it's sort of been relegated to not as strong a field anymore," Horschel said.

Changes are almost certainly coming, in more than just the name. The PGA Tour is trying to find a way for Honda to attract bigger names, and a schedule tweak is expected for next year.

"You've got 30 to 40 PGA Tour pros that live within a couple miles of this place, and I think you've only got a handful of them playing this week, and that's disappointing," Horschel said. "It really is."

There is much to like. The Honda traditionally draws plenty of fans to PGA National, with a total attendance in recent years — except for the pandemic-limited tournament — going just over 200,000.

Fans show up. The world's highest-ranked golfers, not so much.

"Do I worry for it? I don't know," Lowry said. "Next year, I think hopefully the schedule is going to be a little bit different. It is going to be a little bit different. I don't know what it is going to be like yet. But hopefully it can be in a nice date because look, I think this is a proper test. It's a proper championship golf course, and it deserves a good field."

First, though, comes the finding of a new sponsor. There's no timetable to get that done, with the tour aiming for something to be finalized in the next few weeks.

"It's a combination of sponsors and potential sponsors that we've talked to over a period of time, trying to find a good fit for them," said Andy Pazder, chief competitions and tournaments officer for the PGA Tour. "And then in other instances, it's companies that know that this sponsorship opportunity exists and they come to us and they say, 'We'd like to learn more.' We have several active conversations going on. We're hosting, I'll just say, a few of those prospects this week."

When Honda took over as title sponsor in 1982, the purse was $400,000, with $72,000 going to the winner. That's a $1.2 million purse in today's dollars, with a winner's take of about $225,000.

Much has changed.

Sunday's winner gets $1.512 million. The Honda — since it's been called the Honda — has been played on six different courses, with 39 different winners in the 41 years of that sponsorship. Padraig Harrington and Mark Calcavecchia each won the Honda twice; Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller have won the tournament twice but not in the Honda era.

Sepp Straka is the last person to have a chance to win multiple Hondas. He's the defending champion, tapping in for birdie on the 72nd hole after getting to tee off on the par-5 18th just before a downpour came. Lowry rushed his tee shot into the deluge and finished a shot back.

"It was pretty fun to kind of relive some of those shots and just kind of be back here where it all happened," Straka said. "It was a great time."

DIVOTS: Harrington will play the first two rounds at PGA National — site of the 1983 Ryder Cup — with Luke Donald and Zach Johnson. Harrington was Europe's Ryder Cup captain in 2021; Donald and Johnson will be captains for Europe and the U.S. this year. ... Twin brothers Pierceson Coody and Parker Coody are in the field, Pierceson on a sponsor exemption, Parker after getting through a Monday qualifier (that ended on Tuesday). They're the grandsons of 1971 Masters champion Charles Coody, and their dad will caddie for Parker this week.
