7 Day Ultimate Atlantic Adventure – Small Group Tour

I had such a blast on this tour! While it was only 4 days, it was an incredible way to see the start of the magic that exists on the West Coast of Ireland. Do go with the expectation that the weather may not be great, and do keep those sea sickness tablets at the ready for your ferry ride to the Aran Islands. Despite both of these things, be prepared for some stunning scenery, and an itinerary that is a good blend of outdoor activities, free time, hearty food, drinks, and wonderful insight to Irish culture.

What a fabulous way to see Ireland! Steve selected wonderful hotels, found interesting "off the beaten path" things to see, as well as the standards (Guinnes Tour, Trinity College, etc.) Our driver, Patrick, was so accommodating. He bent over backwards to make sure we experienced his Ireland! This was a great trip and I highly recommend it!

We had a private tour as a group of 14 people. Finn made it the trip if a lifetime. His knowledge of Ireland, its history, culture and people was amazing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and we all had an amazing time.

8 Day Explorer Tour on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way

What a great experience the 8-Day Tour with Beyond the Glass was! From the beginning of the booking process to the drop-off and e-contact after the tour, I felt that my vacation was in good hands. At all times James, tour guide and owner of the company, was very attentive and showed great flexibility for adapting to our wishes and needs. His Irish spirit and love for the country were apparent and he did a great job in inspiring similar feelings in me. The tour's itinerary is thought through very well and combines the most important spots with calmer areas and hidden gems - giving a chance for an all-around Irish experience. James' knowledge of the regions travelled, as well as their history, flora and fauna was very impressive and I learned loads during the tour. Besides the great hikes, cycles and traveling parts, there was ample opportunity to explore Irish culture and cuisine (with the group and alone). Both the restaurants and accomodations chosen for our group were of excellent quality and made the trip even more enjoyable. To summarise: The tour was a perfect combination of activities along the beautiful Wild Atlantic Way with many interesting insights into Irish history and culture making for a fun and memorable trip. If you want to explore Ireland "beyond the glass" you will be in the right place on one of James' tours! :)

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

This tour was so good! We experienced more of Ireland than the itinerary indicated (because of stops we made along our journey, which I loved!), but never felt rushed. Our guide Diarmuid is such a professional - he provided us with interesting information about the places we stopped and Ireland in general, kept us on schedule with a relaxed demeanor, and is genuinely a very nice person. I've never traveled with a tour group before and this one couldn't have been any better. The Emerald Isle is so beautiful and everyone is so friendly that, even when there was a bit of rain, it was still fun. Many thanks to Mick and Diarmuid (the best!!) for making this a most memorable trip. PS the accommodations were fantastic - especially the breakfasts!

10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour Tour

10 Day Wild Irish Experience - Small Group Tour

Our 10 day Irish Experience Tour was fantastic. We really appreciated the service and extra care our guide/driver Lee gave us throughout the tour. We had a group of 16 people and 2 were on the 7 day itinerary the rest were 10 days. We loved the group dinners that Lee organized for us to get to know the other guests. Lee always made the agenda clear and got us to the places we needed to be on time. His driving was very safe and he was able to tell us about the Irish people and scenery while getting us to the beautiful views and attractions. The accommodations were clean and the breakfast were delicious. Lee always gave us recommendations on restaurants and pubs in each town we stayed. Each town was unique and I was glad we were able to stay in several of them for 2 nights. Lee adjusted the times to maximize the good weather and for the group to get the best experience. I highly recommend the 10 day Irish Experience tour with Lee!

Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

This tour was so much fun. Everything was great- our guide Diarmuid was very engaging and friendly. His relief driver, Michael, was very nice as well. Both were safe drivers and I felt at ease with them behind the wheel. Accomodations were pretty good, except at our last stop our dormitory had 8 people, which may have been a few too many. All in all, I had a wonderful time and created some great memories. I would recommend it to anyone!

Five stars for James and Beyond the Glass. Truly an exceptional tour of Northern Ireland. James went beyond to ensure the trip was well paced and explored areas outside of the usual tourist trail. We enjoyed the special touch of a unique music play list for each day that related to our destination and also the local stories. Cycling and hiking mix was good amount for us, we are keen walkers. Best part, this was a mother and daughter (teenager) trip and we both really enjoyed the small group and active style of this trip.

Northern & Southern Ireland Tour

Northern & Southern Ireland

there is a difference between, a tour guide and a tour leader, this i did not know. a leader is the organizer of all events, transportation and accommodations. Zoe far exceeded my expectations in this role, and i would highly recommend her. She was not a tour guide. I was expecting more information about the people, locations and cultures of Ireland.

Shamrocks and Leprechauns (10 Days) Tour

Shamrocks and Leprechauns (10 Days)

Absolutely amazing trip! Shane Creegan was excellent, and we enjoyed his company as much as a friend as his outstanding service and wealth of knowledge. We would never have been able to enjoy Ireland the way we did if we had tried to do it on our own, and certainly would have missed out on a great portion of the history, stories, and legends. Our experience with Brendan Vacations and Trafalgar have motivated us to return, and we can't wait to get back! We appreciate Trafalgar making good on a lodging issue (not the company's fault, but the hotel itself) and taking our tour to Bunratty Folk Park as way of apology. We would glady tour with Shane and Bernard, our driver again. Both were very professional and personable.

What people love about Active Tours in Ireland

We had a terrific time on our tour. Our guide / driver Leah was great with excellent stories and information. (Another group following a similar itinerary was equally complimentary of their guide) The company delivers what they promise and more.
Exceeded my expectations. Culture, landscapes, language, history, activities…so much in just a week. Accommodations were very comfortable, food was delicious and plentiful, people were welcoming and generous. Our guide (Pat O’Mara) made the entir3 experience an absolute joy. He was knowledgeable, told stories and histories in a folksy and humorous tone. He was competent, flexible, and inspired with a clear love of his own country that made us love it too.

Irish pubs are famous throughout the world, and most major cities now have an Irish pub/bar. However, an authentic Irish pub is not full of people with green hats with shamrocks dangling from them!

Who goes to the pub: In the late 17th century, the ‘Public House’ was a place for working men to drink. It's now a hub for the local community and everyone, including children are welcome. It’s common for an Irish family to take a baby baptism party for a drink at the pub after church. The Irish love getting together and having a chat over an informal pint.

The ‘Craic’: Pronounced ‘crack’, this very Irish saying translates to ‘What’s been going on with you, tell me a story about your day’. You go to the pub to hear the craic.

Buying rounds: The landlord of the pub is also normally a friend and will know all the locals. You order at the bar, and no tip is expected. If you’re with a group, you’ll take turns in buying drinks for the table. But you can’t leave before it’s your round!

Guinness: A pint of The Black Stuff. It’s unlikely that you’ll find an Irish pub which doesn’t sell Guinness. First brewed in Dublin in 1759 and is now brewed worldwide – however naturally it always tastes better in it’s homeland!

The music: Small groups of local musicians will often play in the pub. It’s a casual affair with the musicians sitting in the corner drinking pints whilst playing. Impromptu music with a singsong and the tin whistle is less common, but this is the magic of small-town pubs when friends get together.

Food: A few pubs will serve food, but not all. However, you’ll aways be able to get a small pack of salty peanuts and a bag of ‘crisps’…don’t ask for chips as might end up with a portion of fries!

Sláinte: Cheers

Irish Pub Culture

Potato was the staple food of the Irish in the mid 1800’s. The plant disease ‘potato blight’ caused the crops to fail in successive years from 1845-1849. The British rule still forced wheat, cattle, diary and beans to be exported and as a result over 2 million people died of hunger or emigrated from Ireland.

The emigration to the USA was at its peak during this period, and the Irish comprised nearly half of all immigrants in the USA in the 1840s. This flow continued till about 1930. The population of Ireland pre-Famine was over 8 million, and it’s never regained these numbers, with it currently being around 5 million.

The Great Famine and Emigration to the USA (1845-1851)

When thinking about the Dingle Way , a spectacular coast, rugged mountains, and ancient ruins come to mind. But that's not all the peninsula has to offer! The area has a rich cultural heritage; an ancient language, welcoming residents, longstanding traditions, and outstanding food. The Dingle Peninsula is more than an attraction, it is more than a visit, it is a destination. Residents and members of Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance have recognized their responsibility to keep the area protected, to allow future generations to enjoy it as much as we do today.

Here are some simple ways to contribute during your visit!

  • Say “NO” to plastic – a great way of doing this is limiting the use of straws, plastic drinking bottles, plastic coffee cups and plastic bags.
  • Leave no trace – carry your personal waste such as wrappers from snacks and other items and avoid littering along the route.
  • Stay local, shop local – Support the local communities by eating and shopping locally!
  • Let nature's sounds prevail – enjoy your experience, keep your noise to a minimum and respect farm animals and wildlife around you (with the added bonus of a higher chance of finding them!)
  • Leave what you find – Don’t take home rocks, plants or flowers as souvenirs as some of these can be valuable for the natural habitats.

Sustainable Travel along the Dingle Way

Shellfish - Being an island nation, it’s no wonder seafood especially shellfish is popular. Lobster, crab, shrimps and mussels can be found on most menus in the summer, and in September oysters come into season. Food festivals such as the Galway Oyster Festival (September) and the Dublin Bay prawn festival in Howth (May) are a joy for foodie visitors.

Soda Bread - The basic ingredients are always the same, baking soda, buttermilk and flour. However, every Irish family has a different recipe which can include adding seeds, bran or oats and making it sweet with honey or dried fruits. Always eaten sliced with butter.

Stew - A good plate of hearty Irish stew is a one-pot meal with potatoes, onions and traditionally mutton, but usually lamb these days. Carrots are sometimes added, and it’s left to simmer and reduce for a thick delicious warming meal coming in from a rainy day!

Colcannon and Champ  - Both these dishes are potato based, and it’s unlikely you’d have both on your plate at the same time. Champ is mashed potato with spring onions, butter and milk. Colcannon is the same but also includes cabbage or kale.

Boxty  - Another potato dish, Boxty covers the full range of potato dumplings, potato pancakes and potato bread. Usually, it’s grated potato mixed with mashed potato and then cooked in different ways for the various types. It’s often eaten with eggs and bacon for breakfast or with smoked salmon for lunch.

Irish Food – Top 5

The Dingle Peninsula is one of the main "Gaeltacht" areas of the Emerald Isle, where the Irish language (Gaelic) is widely spoken at home, in schools and even the workplace. Due to its remote location, it was removed from the influences of the modern world for a long time and the local language and traditions have largely remained intact. Staying in "Gaeltacht" villages means you get to really immerse yourself in the Irish cultural heritage.

You can be sure to come across the Gaelic symbols during your Dingle Way adventure - road signs, names, descriptions and even menu items! Learning a few phrases will help you to get a deeper understanding of the people of this beautiful part of the world.

Here are a few sentences to practice:

Good morning - "Maidin Mhaith" (pronounced: mod-jin wot)

Cheers - "Slainte" (pronounced: slawn-cheh)

I speak only a little Irish - "Níl agam ach beagáinín Gaeilge" (pronounced: kneel ah-gum ock byug-aneen gayle-geh)

Thank you - "Tapadh leat" (pronounced: tapah lat)

The weather is beautiful today - "Ta an aimsir go halainn inniu" (pronounced: taw an eyeim-shur guh haul-inn inn-you)

Gaeltacht and local lingo

Storytelling has been a staple of the Irish culture since the dawn of time and the folklore has famous myths and legends. Think of the many songs, limericks and tales that exist. It is safe to say that mythology and Ireland go hand in hand, have you heard of any of these stories?

  • The Leprechauns  (or locally known as " Leath bhrògan"):  The name translates from 'shoemaker' and the leprechaun is the cultural symbol of Ireland. They were said to roam the Emerald Isle before humans did, wearing a unique hat and red hair. Leprechauns leave a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, so be sure to have a look if you see one!
  • The Pooka (or locally known as "púca"): Pooka's are shape-changing creatures that are some of the most feared in Irish folklore. They are said to be evil and bring bad luck to those who have seen them. For this reason, they are most feared by farmers around the times of harvest!
  • The Irish Harp : You may have noticed that the harp is the national symbol of Ireland, think of the company logos of famous Irish brands such as Guinness and Ryanair. The story goes that evil gods stole the first harp from Dagda (an Irish king). This caused a lack of music in Ireland and people turned very sad. The evil gods then gave back the harp and the joy returned to the entire land. This is how the harp became a national icon!
  • The Shamrock : The three-leafed clover is an important Irish legend and crucial in the spread of Christianity across the Emerald Isle. St Patrick saw a clover and decided to use it to explain the three strands of the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit as one, to the Celts. The Celts could previously not understand what St Patrick was trying to say, but with the help of the shamrock, they finally did.

Irish Myths & Legends

Reading a book can give you a really good taste of the culture, history and landscapes of a destination. Whether you are planning a trip to Ireland or have recently booked a trip, here are some classic books that are set in Ireland!

Dubliners by James Joyce - This famous collection includes 15 short stories about the lives of ordinary people living in Dublin in the early 1900s. The book has a variety of characters and is an easy read with varied outlooks on life.

The Sea by John Banville - This novel is about love, loss, and the power of memory. A middle-aged Irishman called Max returns to the seaside town where he spent his summer holidays as a child to cope with the loss of his dear wife. Max comes to understand the past and this is the center of this beautifully written novel.

The Wild Irish Girl by Sydney Owensen - This book quickly reached bestseller status after it was published in 1806. In this story, a badly behaved boy is banished to his father's estate in Ireland to mend his ways. He then falls in love with the land and with a girl that he meets, but there are some complicated family affairs.

The Green Road by Anne Enright - This is the 6th novel by Anne Enright concerning the lives of the Madigan family on Ireland's Atlantic coast. This book is about family, selfishness and compassion when a family returns to the west coast of Ireland for a final family Christmas before their mother's home is about to sell. After a big conflict, the family is confronted with their ties and the road that brought them home.

Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly - This story takes place in a hidden corner of Ireland where fisherman and farmers find hope and courage in their songs, faith and celebrations. This novel describes the life of a young couple starting a family and selling their crops and catch to pay rent. Potatoes have become the bread and butter of their existence and when three harvests are destroyed, the natural disaster turns into The Great Starvation.

The Yellow House by Patricia Falvey - This novel delves into the politics of Northern Ireland at the beginning of the 20th-century where main character Eileen is torn between two men, each drawing her to one extreme. As war is declared, Eileen begins working at a local mill and tries to save money to hold onto her dreams. This story describes her struggles in trying to separate politics from her personal life.

Britain & Ireland Tours

Why not add England and Scotland to your Irish tour experience? A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compare and contrast these unique but interconnected cultures. Experience a rich and overlapping history, told from three singular perspectives. Three distinct outlooks, three separate national identities — one friendly welcome. Compare the royalty and pageantry of London with the very different majesty you will find in the rolling glens, lochs and highlands of Scotland. Of course, we think that Ireland holds the crown, with a landscape, a culture and a heritage that puts the Emerald Isle among the jewels of all European travel.

Our small groups guarantee Never more than 26 guests per tour

We always keep our tour group sizes small. That's because we want every guest to get the comfort, space and service they deserve. Although many other companies squeeze in groups of up to 50, even the largest of our tour packages are strictly limited to just 26 guests. That leaves empty seats on the coaches. So why do we limit our tours to such small group sizes? Here are six reasons.

Superior Service

Guests consistently list our small group sizes as a top reason why they would book with us again. See our reviews...

More focus on you

With a smaller group, our tour guides have more time to get to know you and your interests.

We deliberately leave empty seats on our coaches, so you can relax and spread out.

Experience each attraction up-close and personal, with more time to ask questions and see what interests you.

Speedier Check-Ins

Compared with many of our rivals, our smaller group sizes make checking in and out of the hotels a breeze.

More Relaxed Pace

Experience Ireland at your own pace. No rushing to keep up and no waiting around for large groups to assemble.

Excellent tour for tourists and locals. Comfortable bikes on a scenic route which suited our varied peddling ability. Informative and entertaining guide by James. Great to have a Cork city bike tour which matches and surpasses experiences abroad.

Philip - Google Review

The bike tour led by James was really well managed: I am usually a little worried about travelling by bike on roads, and I felt really safe. James’ knowledge of Cork and personal stories make the stops really interesting. This is a fantastic way to see and understand the city that you’d be hard pressed to match by any other means.

Helen - TripAdvisor Review

We did the cork city bike tour this morning with Daibhi , our guide. Have to say it was a very pleasant and relaxing and informative way to spend the morning. Highly recommend. Enjoyable and a great way to see the sights of cork city and learn about the history.

Elaine - TripAdvisor Review

We had a great tour, organised by James and led by Alan. We toured the city. Alan has an amazing knowledge of his city and he was just great. So much history in the city that we never would have heard about if we just walked around ourselves. Cycling was a perfect way to get around the city. Thanks James and Alan!

Majella - Google Review

James was our guide for the Galtymore Hike. From the outset James made the group of six very comfortable. He walked at a nice pace, never a problem if we needed a rest. He kindly took loads of photos which are lovely to have. A 5 star experience overall and would highly recommend James.

Siobhan - Google Review

Great mountain hiking day with James! He was cheery, knew his stuff and happy to work within our limits. These are NOT universal to all guides, believe me! Recommended!

7-day Trip to Ireland Itinerary

The-Ultimate-Tour-of-Ireland-Unique-Experiences-Off-the-Beaten-Path

Day 1: Cork, the Rebel County

Total driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Your Ireland adventure tour begins as we depart Dublin for County Cork, nestled in the stunning southwest corner of Ireland.

En route, we make our first stop at the famous Rock of Cashel. Here, you can explore its well-preserved medieval round tower, cathedral, and chapel.

Then it’s back on the road to Cork, which Lonely Planet describes as “at the top of its game, sophisticated, vibrant and diverse”.

We’re here for one of Ireland’s most quintessential experiences — kissing the Blarney Stone!

According to legend, if you kiss this ancient stone, you may get “the gift of the gab“. There’s only one way to find out!

The Blarney Stone is in Blarney Castle, a striking medieval stronghold set in beautiful grounds. We explore the picturesque gardens and the mysterious Rock Close.

The Rock Close is a special, mystical spot with waterfalls, a fairy glade, and rocks names for druids and witches.

Your Cork experience continues with a guided walking tour through one of southwest Ireland’s most picturesque places — the historic port and fishing town of Kinsale.

Kinsale is home to castles, forts, shops, galleries, and an array of arts and crafts. It’s also where you can find the recently launched Kinsale Gourmet Academy.

We spend the first night in this stunning harbour town. The good news is that Kinsale is also renowned for having award-winning restaurants, not to mention dramatic scenery.

There’s no better place to enjoy a delicious meal (consider the fresh seafood!) and take an evening stroll.

Day 2: Killarney National Park

We say a fond farewell to Kinsale and get back on the road, this time towards Killarney National Park.

This part of the journey is filled with spectacular sights and hidden gems, with highlights including Ladies’ View and Moll’s Gap.

When we arrive in Killarney National Park, you can hop on a bike and enjoy a two-hour ride around the wonderful surroundings.

Some of the sights to take in include Muckross House and Gardens, Torc Waterfall, and Ross Castle!

Cycling through the park is a joy, especially for nature lovers. You have a choice of trails to follow, but each one is fantastic and offers its own splendor.

We then head to the celebrated, cozy coastal town of Dingle, where we stay overnight.

The evening is yours to sample the atmosphere in the town’s famous quirky pubs and to enjoy dinner in one of its fantastic restaurants.

You may even stumble across an unforgettable traditional music session!

And if you’re looking to enjoy that perfect pint of Guinness, this just might be the place!

Day 3: Dingle

Total driving time: 2 Hours, excluding stops

Choose your activity this morning by either kayaking amongst the marine life in Dingle Bay with our friends at Irish Adventures or e-biking around Dingle Peninsula!

The e-bike tour is self-guided and takes you around the Slea Head Loop. Riding these bikes is a breeze — you can cover plenty of ground with only minimal effort!

If you can’t say no to kayaking, you can still enjoy the Slea Head Drive experience on our bus in the afternoon.

Those who cycled the route in the morning have an afternoon of visiting Dingle’s great cafes, quirky craft shops, inviting pubs and more to look forward to!

Day 4: Cliffs of Moher & Lahinch

Our grand adventure continues as we travel north. While we have to leave Dingle behind, you can marvel at the incredible views of Castlegregory as we go.

But that’s not the only treat in store this morning!

One of our local farmer friends will astound you with a sheepdog show! Watching the border collies work in tandem with their master is truly fascinating and a taste of Irish heritage.

We then take the ferry across the River Shannon, landing in County Clare, home to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, on the other side.

The cliffs are one of Ireland’s most iconic attractions, and we explore them on foot during a two-and-a-half-hour hike!

The dramatic coastline and fresh sea air will reinvigorate you!

Our guides will take you off the beaten path, showing you secret passages away from the main tourist hot spots.

The cliff views are steeped in myth and wonder. If you listen carefully, the Wild Atlantic Ocean’s roar may echo your name on the waves of bliss.

This is the perfect place to take jaw-dropping photos to show everyone at home!

Doolin welcomes us after our experience at the Cliffs of Moher.

We spend the evening in this colourful, welcoming village, the home of traditional Irish music.

Day 5: Galway, The City of the Tribes

Total driving time: 2 hours, excluding stops

In the morning, we leave Doolin and head for Galway, via the Burren National Park.

Along the way, we will have a quick break and photo-op at the 16th-century Dunguaire Castle, located in the quaint, charming fishing village of Kinvara.

Galway is known around the world as a city of festivals and culture. In fact, the city was the European Capital of Culture in 2020, a year-long celebration of all that Galway is famous for.

Galway is a medieval city with true living history. Many of its buildings date back hundreds of years, now serving as fabulous restaurants with locally sourced produce, lively bars, and craft shops.

Pubs painted in bright colours heave with live music, while cafés provide front-row seats for watching street performers, musicians, and a whole host of local characters.

Enjoy a walking tour through this historical and cultural city. And after discovering Galway’s hidden gems, you have a free afternoon.

This is the perfect time for shopping in the city’s many wonderful shops. And when you’ve had your fix of retail therapy, you can explore Galway’s great food, entertainment, and craic.

You may just find yourself watching Irish street dancing while tapping your feet to the pulse of pure Celtic music.

Day 6: The Aran Islands

On the morning of day six, we make for the Galway docklands, where we sail across the bay to Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands.

On arrival, we do what we do best — explore!

This spectacular island has awe-inspiring landscapes and friendly locals who will teach you a few words in “Gaelic”.

We cycle the island’s rugged coastline, heading toward Dún Aonghasa, a ruined stone fort standing on a clifftop 100m above the ocean.

When we return to the mainland, the stunning views continue. This time, it’s those of Connemara National Park.

Our ultimate destination is Ireland’s favourite town — Westport.

This the perfect base to explore nearby Killary Harbour, the only natural fjord in Ireland, and other hidden gems in the area.

It’s then time to ease into an unforgettable night in County Mayo. Unwind in Westport with some local craft beers and mouthwatering food.

And no trip to Westport is complete without a visit to Matt Molloy’s bar where you can enjoy a traditional Irish music session and some good old craic.

Note: Ferry crossings to the Aran Islands are weather permitting. If it is unsafe to travel, we provide wonderful alternative plans for the day!

Day 7: Westport - Dublin

The final morning of this grand adventure tour comes with one last challenge: climbing Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holiest mountain.

This is a rewarding hike for novices and experienced hikers alike. It’s also one of the best places to learn about St Patrick himself.

At the summit, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the 365 islands in Clew Bay. What a perfect way to finish your Zest tour!

Before you head back to Dublin, our expert guides will give you their favourite recommendations of things to see and do if you’re staying in Ireland for a while longer.

Due to our tours’ off-the-beaten-path locations, the size of our vehicles, and the fact that we cannot guarantee that all accommodation partners have ramps/elevators, unfortunately, our tours are not wheelchair accessible .

Note: To confirm your booking, you are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 per person for Small-Group tours .

Celtic pride, natural glory

A land of rolling emerald plains dotted with castles and ringed by rocky mountains, Ireland looks like something out of a fairytale. But believe us – it is very, very real. The true magic of this place presents itself in the lived-in details: the characteristic taste of a pint of dark stout poured by a wizened bartender in a small-town pub; the crisp, clean air that fills your lungs as you wander a Stone Age cemetery; the spongy feel of the impossibly lush turf beneath your boots as you hike into the hills. Ireland is where fiction becomes fact, and myth is more real than anything you’ve lived before. Turn the page and see where the story takes you next.

Dún Aonghasa, County Galway

Bring your coffee and sandwiches to the ancient fort of Dún Aonghasa , which clings tenaciously to the cliffs of Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands  in County Galway. The fort is a 15-minute walk from the visitor centre located on the edge of the Kilmurvey Craft Village. The short hike across the rocky, moon-like terrain is a small price to pay for lunch with incredible views 87 metres above the Atlantic waves.

Viewing platform at the RSPB West Light Seabird Centre on Rathlin Island, County Antrim

The RSPB West Light Seabird Centre on Rathlin Island is home to Northern Ireland’s largest colony of seabirds. Species such as puffins, razorbills and guillemots come to nest in this area every year, attracted by the rocky cliffs, lakes, and grassy fields. One of the best ways to observe them is from the centre’s main viewing platform on the craggy cliffside. After your visit to the seabird centre, explore some of the island’s scenic walking routes and pay a visit to the famous upside down lighthouse.

10-island-experiences-garinish-island-county-cork

The gardens of Garnish Island, County Cork

The gardens of Garnish Island in Bantry Bay, County Cork are renowned in the horticultural world for their great beauty and the large collection of plants that thrive there. Brought to life by the island’s previous owners Annan and Violet Bryce and architect and garden designer Harold Ainsworth Peto, this 37-acre garden is a glorious collage of colour that changes with the seasons and perfectly balances formal and wild elements. Explore the sunken Italian Garden, the Grecian Temple with sea and mountain views and the Martello Tower, which dates from 1805.

On Boa Island – one of 154 islands in County Fermanagh’s Lough Erne there is an intriguing statue considered to be one of the most remarkable stone figures on the island of Ireland. Believed to represent a Celtic deity, the ancient two-headed statue has been named the Janus figure, due to its similarities with the Roman two-headed god, Janus. You’ll find this mysterious pagan statue in the Caldragh Cemetery, one of the stops on the island’s walking trail .

Bray Head on Valentia Island, County Kerry

Tetrapod tracks dating back to the Devonian period over 300 million years ago can be seen on Valentia Island in County Kerry, one of Ireland’s most westerly land masses. Around 20 trackways have been preserved on the rocky coastline of the island, and they’re possibly some of the oldest evidence of the evolution of creatures from the water. Add this stop to your adventure on the Ring of Kerry!

island-experiences-devenish-fermanagh

The monastic settlement on Devenish Island, County Fermanagh

Of the many lake islands in Lough Erne, County Fermanagh, Devenish stands out. It was here in the 6th-century that Saint Molaise founded his monastery and at one point almost 1,000 monks lived and worked here in splendid isolation. You can still see the ruins of its Augustinian Abbey, intricately carved stone crosses and perfectly intact round tower. Not bad, considering the site was raided by Vikings in 837AD and burned centuries later.

10-island-experiences-deserted-village-achill-island-county-mayo

The deserted village on Achill Island, County Mayo

At the foot of Slievemore Mountain on County Mayo’s Achill Island lies an eerie village of between 80 and 100 tumbledown stone cottages, abandoned from the mid-1800s. As you walk among those long empty ruins, you might wonder, what happened here? Achill’s famous Deserted Village came about due to a few factors including evictions due to the inability to pay rent to greedy landlords, famine and emigration. Explore the site and imagine what life was once like here...

10-island-experiences-great-blasket-sland-seal-colony

Grey seal colony on the Great Blasket Island, County Kerry © Shutterstock

The Blasket Islands in County Kerry have been described as the grey seal capital of Ireland. During the winter, up to 1,000 seals can be seen lounging on the shore of Great Blasket Island’s White Strand, and late September-October is a great time to see fuzzy seal pups. Several tours can get you that little bit closer to seals in their natural habitat – while still maintaining a safe distance to avoid disturbing them. The Great Blasket Island Premium Tour includes a landing on the island, cave and cove explorations, marine and birdlife sightings and of course, a chance to see the thriving grey seal colony.

10-island-experiences-skellig-michael-county-kerry

Stone steps on Skellig Michael, County Kerry

You may recognise these rocky steps from Star Wars: The Force Awakens… but Skellig Michael  is much more than a dramatic film location. In the 6th century, monks settled on this island off the County Kerry coast, climbing to the top of its tallest summit and creating an extraordinary monastic village there, 218 metres (714 ft) above the churning ocean. Although some have deemed it vertigo-inducing, climbing the steps to the village is an incredible, spiritual experience.

10-island-experiences-dursey-island-county-cork

Even the postman takes the cable car over to Dursey Island  in County Cork to deliver to the five native island residents! This cable car has been in operation since 1969 and carries you 250 metres across the Atlantic Ocean to the tranquil island. Once there, you can follow the Dursey Island Loop which takes you past rugged cliffs and rustic stone walls, as you listen to a soundtrack of birdsong and the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

Where do you want to go?

Do you feel like tasting wild Atlantic sea spray on your lips? Strolling through vibrant city streets? Exploring ancient ruins? Right this way…
