A North American tour of ‘Parade’ will launch in January 2025. The musical, which won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, will begin performances at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady, New York. An official tour launch will follow at Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Featuring a Tony-winning score by Jason Robert Brown and a Tony-winning book by Alfred Uhry, this production of ‘Parade’ originally played a week-long engagement at New York City Center in 2022 before transferring to the Main Stem. “Parade” opened on March 16, 2023, at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The limited run closed on Aug. 6, but not before receiving six Tony nominations. In addition to best revival, the production won for Michael Arden’s direction. The production’s cast album was recently nominated for a 2024 Best Musical Theater Album Grammy Award.

“We are honored that we can bring ‘Parade’ to audiences across North America,” said the tour's producers in a joint statement, “so that they too can experience this once in a lifetime production in this moment in history.”

“We’re honored that Minneapolis has been chosen as the official premiere city to tell this important story of the enduring power of human resilience and redemption,” said Hennepin Theatre Trust president and CEO Todd Duesing in a statement. “It’s a testament to our city’s cultural significance and artistic appreciation where diverse audiences come together to experience the magic of Broadway.”

Co-conceived and originally directed on Broadway by Tony-winner Harold Prince, “Parade” dramatizes the real-life experience of Jewish couple Leo and Lucille Frank as they face discrimination and prejudice amidst a murder trial in 1913 Georgia.

“Parade” is co-choreographed by Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant. The tour will feature the Tony-nominated costume and lighting designs of Susan Hilferty and Heather Gilbert, respectively. The design team also includes Tony-nominated scenic designer Dane Laffrey, sound designer Jon Weston, Tony-nominated projection designer Sven Ortel and hair and wig designer Tom Watson. Kimberlee Wertz will serve as music coordinator.

Casting, by Telsey + Co/Craig Burns, and a full tour itinerary will be announced at a later date.

The “Parade” tour is being produced by the same team that led the Broadway production: Seaview and Ambassador Theatre Group.

‘Parade’ Review: Ben Platt Stuns in a Powerful Broadway Production of an Essential American Musical

Parade review

Traveling from the relative calm of the Clinton era to more perilous, contemporary times of mobs, mendacity and political mayhem, the much-admired but short-lived musical “ Parade ” has now found its moment in a brilliant Broadway revival.

A decade after its Broadway bow in 1998 under the direction of Harold Prince, when the show received awards but not a lengthy run, a significant re-do directed by Rob Ashford at London’s Donmar Warehouse in 2007 gave the challenging show and its dark subject matter a stronger structure and new life.

Popular on Variety

There’s a 26-member cast of glorious voices and a fulsome orchestra playing Jason Robert Brown ‘s ambitious and always engaging music. (He was in his 20s when it was written.) The score includes a wide embrace of American music: Southern laments, soaring love ballads, charm songs and anthems of hope, all while tapping into the musical genres of gospel, blues, jazz and yes, even Broadway.

But this time out, will audiences take to a disturbing but captivating musical that deals with racism, antisemitism and injustice — and that ends in a lynching?

Context and theatrical artistry are everything, and here Brown, book writer Alfred Uhry (“Driving Miss Daisy,” “The Last Night at Ballyhoo”) and director Michael Arden (“Spring Awakening,” “Once on This Island”) reshape this tragic story and elevate it with significance and stagecraft.

Despite the unsettling subject matter there are also moments of charm, wit and even a razzmatazz number to act as a respite from the weight of grief, outrage and the ghosts of history.

Frank is not an easily sympathetic character, but the eminently likable Platt commits to the character’s formality, imperiousness and insensitivity, while revealing just a bit of wry humor (“How Can I Call This Home”). He also scores with a show-stopping fantasy number (“Come Up to My Office”). But it’s the vivid portrayal of his character’s emotional transformation in the second act that’s most moving, making him a complex man far more than a simple symbol.

As Frank’s neglected Southern Jewish belle wife Lucille, a terrific Micaela Diamond (“The Cher Show”) also has a compelling arc that grows in power (if not fierceness in “You Don’t Know Him”). The couple’s deepening relationship gives heart to a show whose narrative is relentlessly chilly. Their second act duets — “This Is Not Over Yet” and “All the Wasted Time” — make the production soar and ground it in humans terms.

More than a dozen featured players each have their moments in the spotlight, too, making it an embarrassment of riches to savor. Jake Pedersen as Mary’s young suitor is delightful in “The Picture Show” and devastating with “It Don’t Make Sense”; Jay Armstrong Johnson is all oily pizazz in “Real Big News”; and Courtnee Carter and Douglas Lyons give a stinging fact-check perspective in “A Rumbling’ and a Rollin’.” Sean Allan Krill shows smooth command and decency as the questioning Georgia governor, and he aptly sings “Pretty Music”; Howard McGillin as the presiding judge edges toward madness in “The Glory”;  and Alex Joseph Grayson lays it all on the line in “Feel the Rain Fall.”

Key to this retelling is the presentational style of the show, which is common for City Center’s Encores! shows and here becomes an asset as it sharpens the focus and always keeps the musical numbers front and center, enhanced by Heather Gilbert’s lighting, Susan Hilferty’s period costumes and Jon Weston’s sound design.

The tri-level raised stage by Dane Laffrey also keeps it simple, effectively standing in for a wide variety of locales: factory offices, court room, ballroom, gravesites, prison cell and ultimately gallows. Co-choreographers Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Cree Grant make the sweep of history move with grace and flair.

Sven Ortel’s projections of vintage photographs of the actual characters, settings and headlines are a constant reminder of the real world and its actual history. This theatrically thrilling revival of “Parade” teaches lessons that still need to be learned from a wicked past that haunts us still.

About Parade on Broadway

After an acclaimed run at New York City Center, Jason Robert Brown's Parade came to Broadway, winning the Tony Awards for Best Musical Revival and Best Direction of a Musical. Get Parade tickets on New York Theatre Guide, and see Tony Award winner Ben Platt and Tony Award nominee Micaela Diamond in the starring roles.

The current production of Parade first went up off Broadway in 2022, as part of New York City Center's Encores! program presenting rarely revived musicals. The 2023 transfer marks its first Broadway revival since its 1998 premiere, when Parade played for just over two months. It was a short, but lauded, run, with Parade receiving nine Tony Award nominations. The show won two, for Best Book of a Musical (for Alfred Uhry) and Best Original Score (for Jason Robert Brown).

Parade is the only musical the two wrote together. Uhry is best known for writing the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Driving Miss Daisy , which was staged for the first time on Broadway in 2010 with Vanessa Redgrave and James Earl Jones.

Parade was Brown's first Broadway musical, and he has composed four others since: 13 , The Bridges of Madison County , Honeymoon in Vegas , and most recently, Mr. Saturday Night starring Billy Crystal. He is also known for the Off-Broadway musical The Last Five Years , which is regularly revived across the U.S. and the world.

What is the Parade Broadway musical about?

The Parade musical dramatizes the real-life trial, imprisonment, and ultimate lynching of Jewish American factory manager Leo Frank (Platt). In 1913, Frank was accused of raping and killing a 13-year-old female worker at his Georgia factory. The musical explores how local and national press sensationalized the trial, the anti-Semitism the trial and its coverage incited, and how the ordeal — especially since Frank was, likely, falsely accused — affects Frank and his family.

Who is Ben Platt?

Ben Platt is an actor best known originating the title role of Dear Evan Hansen , for which he won a Tony in 2017 at 23 years old. Until 2022, he was the youngest solo actor to ever win the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Myles Frost, who won for MJ at 22, has since claimed the record). Platt is also known for his screen roles in the Pitch Perfect film series and on the Netflix show The Politician ; Parade on Broadway marks his first return to the big stage since Dear Evan Hansen .

His role as Leo Frank earned him a 2023 Tony Award nomination alongside Micaela Diamond as Lucille Frank. The show earned an additional three nominations, including Best Musical Revival and Best Direction of a Musical for Michael Arden.

About Parade on Broadway Starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond

Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) returns to the New York stage as Leo Frank alongside Micaela Diamond (The Cher Show) as Lucille Frank in this starry Gala presentation of the Jason Robert Brown (Songs for a New World) and Alfred Uhry (Driving Miss Daisy) musical. Inspired by historical events, Parade follows the Franks—a Jewish couple living in Marietta, Georgia—as they’re pulled apart and drawn together by Leo’s 1913 murder trial, conviction, appeal, and eventual lynching. Brutal legal drama contrasts with haunting pastoral lyricism as an unlikely love story unfolds—a unique blend of tones that won both Brown and Uhry Tony Awards (for Original Score and Book respectively).

More information about Parade on Broadway Starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond

Big news! Dear Evan Hansen 's Ben Platt and The Cher Show 's Micaela Diamond star in the Tony Award-winning first Broadway revival of Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry's Parade . Get Parade tickets on TodayTix, and see the Best Musical Revival winner before the parade passes by on August 6.

The Parade musical is based on actual historical events: The lead character, Leo Frank (Platt), was a factory manager in 1913 Georgia accused of assaulting and murdering a 13-year-old factory worker. The show follows Frank through his trial, imprisonment, and eventual lynching as a result of the anti-Semitism that Frank's criminalization unleashed. With an emotional script and songs that incorporate folk, gospel, blues, and pop-rock, Parade explores the roles the sensational media, the public, and Frank himself played in the outcome of the event, and the effects it had on Frank's marriage.

Parade was Brown's first Broadway show, and it would lead to a successful career that also produced Broadway musicals like 13 and The Bridges of Madison County . (His other best-known work, The Last Five Years , has never run on Broadway.)

Parade on Broadway only ran for two months between 1998-99, but it won Brown and Uhry the Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book, respectively. The show got seven other nominations, including Best Musical.

In 2022, Parade was included in New York City Center's Encores! season; the program mounts musicals that don't get revived often. Platt also starred in that six-day run, and that production is the one now on Broadway. Out of six 2023 Tony Award nominations, its wins included Best Direction of a Musical for Michael Arden.

What to Watch For

  • Parade bookwriter Alfred Uhry has a personal connection to the story: His great uncle owned the pencil factory Leo Frank oversaw.
  • Uhry achieved his greatest success with the 1988 Pulitzer-winning Driving Miss Daisy.
  • Jason Robert Brown conducted the musical himself for the New York City Center run.
  • In the City Center production, Platt sat on stage for the entire intermission each night, in character as Frank in jail.
  • Director Harold Prince initially asked Stephen Sondheim to write the Parade score, but he declined. Prince's daughter recommended Brown, and the rest is history!
  • Another modern classic musical, Chicago , is also about American media sensationalizing crime. Like Parade , that musical is also based on real events, though more loosely.
  • When Parade passes by...again! Fifty years before this Parade premiered, a 1935 musical/sketch revue with the same name went up on Broadway. There's no relation between the two.

Unfortunately, tickets for this event are no longer available.

Ben Platt to Lead ‘Parade’ Revival on Broadway This Season

The musical’s exploration of antisemitism is timely, with rising concern about the issue in the United States and beyond.

Ben Platt, the Tony-winning star of “Dear Evan Hansen,” will return to Broadway next month to lead the cast in a revival of “Parade,” a musical about an early-20th-century lynching of a Jewish businessman in Georgia.

The revival, directed by Michael Arden (a two-time Tony nominee, for revivals of “Once on This Island” and “Spring Awakening”), had a seven-performance run at New York City Center last fall. Platt plays Leo Frank , a factory boss convicted of killing a young girl in a case tainted by antisemitism; Micaela Diamond, who previously played the youngest version of the title character in “The Cher Show” on Broadway, will co-star as Frank’s wife, Lucille.

The show, with songs by Jason Robert Brown and a book by Alfred Uhry and co-conceived by Hal Prince , had a brief run on Broadway that opened in 1998; it was commercially unsuccessful, but won Tony Awards for both book and score. The history it depicts is real: Frank was convicted in 1913, lynched in 1915 (at age 31), and in 1986 he was posthumously pardoned .

The musical’s exploration of antisemitism has made it more timely now, when there is rising concern about the issue in the United States and beyond. The City Center production garnered uniformly strong reviews : in The New York Times, Juan A. Ramírez called it “the best-sung musical in many a New York season.”

The “Parade” revival will begin previews Feb. 21 and open March 16 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater, where the musical “Almost Famous” closed on Sunday. The “Parade” production is planning a short run, to Aug. 6.

The revival is being produced by Seaview , a company created by Greg Nobile and Jana Shea that previously produced “Slave Play” and “POTUS,” and Ambassador Theater Group, a large British theater company that operates two Broadway houses (the Hudson and the Lyric) and also produces shows.

Michael Paulson is the theater reporter. He previously covered religion, and was part of the Boston Globe team whose coverage of clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. More about Michael Paulson

Inspired by historical events,  Parade  follows the Franks, a Jewish couple living in Marietta, Georgia, as they’re pulled apart and drawn together by Leo’s 1913 murder trial, conviction, appeal, and eventual lynching. Per the synopsis: “Brutal legal drama contrasts with haunting pastoral lyricism as an unlikely love story unfolds—a unique blend of tones that won both Brown and Uhry Tony Awards (for Original Score and Book respectively).”

Director Michael Arden said, “I am delighted that Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown’s musical will be seen by Broadway audiences again after our brief run last fall. Parade has been a seminal piece of theater for me as an artist since it premiered 25 years ago, and to be collaborating with this incredible group of producers, designers, and artists led by the brilliant Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond is truly a dream come true. The story of Leo Frank is more important than ever to re-examine, and it is my hope that audiences are both inspired and activated to reflect on both the past failure and the enduring promise of the complicated tapestry we call America.”

Platt, an Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner ( Dear Evan Hansen ) makes his Broadway return in the lead role of Leo Frank, with Diamond ( The Cher Show ) as wife Lucille Frank.

Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

Among the musical numbers in Parade : “All the Wasted Time,” “Do It Alone,” and “The Old Red Hills of Home.”

Amid religious intolerance, political injustice and racial tension, the stirring Tony Award-winning Parade explores the endurance of love and hope against all the odds. With a book by acclaimed playwright Alfred Uhry ( Driving Miss Daisy ) and a rousing, colorful and haunting score by Jason Robert Brown ( Songs For a New World, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County ), Parade is a moving examination of the darkest corners of America's history.

In 1913, Leo Frank, a Brooklyn-raised Jew living in Georgia, is put on trial for the murder of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, a factory worker under his employ. Already guilty in the eyes of everyone around him, a sensationalist publisher and a janitor's false testimony seal Leo's fate. His only defenders are a governor with a conscience and, eventually, his assimilated Southern wife who finds the strength and love to become his greatest champion.

Daring, innovative and bold, Parade is filled with soaring music and a heart-wrenching story, offering a moral lesson about the dangers of prejudice and ignorance that should not be forgotten. Groups looking for powerful, moving theatrical experiences will need to look no further than this unforgettable show.

‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Stereophonic’ lead Tony Award nominations, shows honoring creativity’s spark

FILE - The stage appears before the start of the 75th annual Tony Awards on June 12, 2022 in...

NEW YORK (AP) — Two Broadway shows celebrating the origins of sonic creativity —  the musical “Hell’s Kitchen”  fueled by Alicia Keys songs, and the play “Stereophonic” about a ‘70s rock band at the edge of stardom — each earned a leading 13  Tony Award  nominations Tuesday, a list that also saw a record number of women nominated for best director.

A total of 28 shows earned a Tony nod or more, with the musical “The Outsiders,” an adaptation of the beloved S. E. Hinton novel and the Francis Ford Coppola film, earning 12 nominations; a starry revival of “Cabaret” starring Eddie Redmayne, nabbing nine; and “Appropriate,” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ searing play about a family reunion in Arkansas where everyone has competing motivations and grievances, grabbing eight.

Rachel McAdams, making her Broadway debut in “Mary Jane,” earned a best actress in a play nomination, while “Succession” star Jeremy Strong, got his first ever nomination, for a revival of “An Enemy of the People.” Jessica Lange in “Mother Play,” Sarah Paulson in “Appropriate” and Amy Ryan, who stepped in at the last minute for a revival of  “Doubt,”  also earned nominations in the best actress in a play category.

“The Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons earned a supporting nod for “Mother Play,” and Daniel Radcliffe on his fifth Broadway show, a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along,” won his first nomination.

Redmayne in his second show on Broadway got a nod as best lead actor in a musical, as did Brian d’Arcy James for “Days of Wine and Roses,” Brody Grant in “The Outsiders,” Jonathan Groff in “Merrily We Roll Along” and 73-year-old Dorian Harewood in “The Notebook,” the adaptation of  Nicholas Sparks  romantic tearjerker. Harewood, in his first Broadway show in 46 years, landed his first Tony nomination.

Redmayne’s “Cabaret” co-star Gayle Rankin earned a nomination for best actress in a musical, as did Eden Espinosa in “Lempicka,” Maleah Joi Moon in “Hell’s Kitchen,” Kelli O’Hara in “Days of Wine and Roses” and 71-year-old Maryann Plunkett, who plays the elderly wife at the heart of “The Notebook.”

Steve Carell in his Broadway debut in a poorly received revival of the classic play “Uncle Vanya” failed to secure a nod, but starry producers who earned Tony nods include Keys, Angelina Jolie (for “The Outsiders”) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (for “Suffs”).

The best new musical crown will be a battle between “Hell’s Kitchen,” “The Outsiders,” the dance-heavy, dialogue-less stage adaptation of Sufjan Stevens’s 2005 album “Illinois,”  “Suffs,”  based on the American suffragists of the early 20th century, and “Water for Elephants,” which combines Sara Green’s 2006 bestseller with circus elements.

The best new play Tony will pit “Stereophonic” against “Mother Play,” Paula Vogel’s play about a mother and her kids spanning 1964 to the 21st century; “Mary Jane,” Amy Herzog’s humanistic portrait of a divorced mother of a young boy with health issues; “Prayer for the French Republic,” Joshua Harmon’s sprawling family comedy-drama that deals with Zionism, religious fervency and antisemitism; and “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding,” Jocelyn Bioh’s comedy about the lives of West African women working at a salon.

The nominations marked a smashing of the Tony record for most women named in a single season. The 2022 Tony Awards had held the record for most female directing nominees, with four total across the two races — musical and play. Only 10 women have gone on to win a directing crown.

This year, three women were nominated for best play direction — Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”) and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”) — while four were nominated in the musical category — Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along”), Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”) Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”) and Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”).

A spring barrage of new shows — 14 shows opened in an 11-day span this year — is not unusual these days as producers hope their work will be fresh in the mind of voters ahead of the Tony Awards ceremony on June 16.

There were some firsts this season, including  “Here Lies Love”  with Broadway’s first all-Filipino cast, which earned four nominations, including best original score for David Byrne and Fat Boy Slim. And seven openly autistic actors starred in  “How to Dance in Ohio,”  a first for Broadway but which got no Tony love.

Academy Award winner and Tony Award-nominee  Ariana DeBose,  who hosted both the 2023 and 2022 ceremonies, will be back this year and will produce and choreograph the opening number.

This year’s location — the David H. Koch Theater — is the home of New York City Ballet and in the same sprawling building complex as Lincoln Square Theater, which houses the Broadway venue Beaumont Theater.

Like last year, the three-hour main telecast will air on CBS and stream on Paramount+ from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. EDT/5 p.m.-8 p.m. PDT with a pre-show on Pluto TV, and some Tony Awards handed out there.

This season’s Broadway numbers — about $1.4 billion in grosses and 11.1 million tickets — is running slightly less than the 2022-23 season, off about 4% in grosses and down 1% in tickets.

‘Spider-Man’ Goes on Global Tour as Fourth Movie Stalls Out

Tom Holland as Peter Parker smiling near a wall

Hollywood has never seemed to be able to make a fourth Spider-Man movie in a single franchise, but at least now, you can see the web-slinger in a live concert event in a city near you.

(left to right) Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire variants of Peter Parker/Spider-Man edited with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse background marvel

There has been talk of a Spider-Man 4 for years, first with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire returning after their relatively little-loved third movie together. Apparently, behind-the-scenes conflict and general ennui at Sony Pictures put a stop to that, although there have been more recent rumors that it could finally happen . Unfortunately, Raimi himself has confirmed that he does not have active plans for it, saying:

“Well, I haven’t heard about that yet. I did read that, but I’m not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don’t know that they’re going to go back to me, and say, ‘Well, folks, we can also tell that story!’ I’m not sure, but I love all the new Spider-Man movies. I loved Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). It was really, super powerful seeing Tobey [Maguire] again in it.”

Later, Andrew Garfield took over the role of Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man (2014); while both movies made over $700 million at the box office, they have still been oddly treated as disappointments by fans. However, it was Marvel’s enthusiasm to finally get the character into the MCU that really prevented Garfield from ever getting close to a third movie, let alone a fourth one.

Since Captain America: Civil War (2016), Tom Holland has portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU, quickly becoming a tentpole character for the franchise. No Way Home brought all three Variants of the character together in a hugely acclaimed movie, but right around the same time, a new Spider-Man entered the chat: Miles Morales.

Miles Morales in Into the Spider-Verse

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) introduced Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) in his first feature film to massive acclaim. The character took over the mantle of the web-slinger upon the unexpected death of his universe’s Peter Parker (Chris Pine), only to find himself the center of a nexus of multiple worlds collapsing onto his own. The film co-starred Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Vélez, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber.

The sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), expanded that concept, introducing Miles Morales to an infinite number of heroes called the Spider-Society and grossing nearly double the first movie. It is no surprise that before we get either a Spider-Man 4 or the promised Beyond the Spider-Verse , Sony Pictures and Marvel are continuing to find a way to expand the S pider-Verse .

Daniel Pemberton Headshot and Spider-Verse Orchestra

Following last week’s announcement of the now fast-selling U.K. tour, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse composer Daniel Pemberton is revealing that the film’s live-in-concert experience is now web-swinging across the Atlantic and into the States.

The Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated composer channeled the rave and club scenes of ‘90s London to create the musical identity of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga. And while this experimental approach could be done with relative ease in the recording studio, Pemberton was initially uncertain if the multidimensional scores of Into the Spider-Verse and now Across the Spider-Verse could be re-created for a continuous live-to-picture performance.

“ I always thought it’d be impossible to do live, because they jump between so many different ideas and genres. But a long time ago, I did a couple of cues at a one-off film music festival, and I was really surprised at how effective it worked,” Pemberton tells The Hollywood Reporter . “So that got my brain thinking about trying to do the whole film live, and we did a couple of tests that went down phenomenally.”

Pemberton is quick to credit the Phil Lord- and Chris Miller-produced films for providing him with the leeway that inherently comes with the franchise’s revolutionary approach to animation.

Below, during a recent conversation with THR in support of Across the Spider-Verse ’s U.S. tour announcement, Pemberton also explains how the first cue he ever wrote for Across wound up serving as the film’s thematic bookends involving Gwen Stacy.

So how did you arrive at this point where Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse both have live concerts and tours?

The Spider-Verse films probably have the most complicated scores I’ve ever done, and I always thought it’d be impossible to do live, because they jump between so many different ideas and genres. But a long time ago, I did a couple of cues at a one-off film music festival, and I was really surprised at how effective it worked. So that got my brain thinking about trying to do the whole film live, and we did a couple of tests that went down phenomenally.

So Into the Spider-Verse has now been on a tour, and it’s crazy that it’s become quite a huge thing with a touring band and a whole bunch of musicians driving around America in a truck. But we’ve only done Across the Spider-Verse live once, and that was at the Academy Museum in L.A. That was the first and only time it’s been done so far, but it’s so much work to get the show watertight. Once you’ve done that, then you can start working out how to turn it into a touring show.

On certain dates, will you be there to pick up a guitar and play various other instruments?

There are moments in the score with opera singing and whistling. Will the live shows actually have designated opera singers and whistlers?

The whistling we normally do live, but the opera singer is probably going to be on track. There are a lot of things in this score that are so complex to balance. So we’re trying to give a live experience, but it’s not like a symphonic orchestra where every single element is all being performed live. We have loads of live stuff backed with electronics and turntables, and that’s the only way we could really make it work. It’s really about how much of an exciting show it is. And if you see the show on two different nights, you are going to get a slightly different experience, but also a very unique live experience.

What percentage of Into the Spider-Verse ’s score did you expand on in Across the Spider-Verse ?

For me, great film music is when you have strong themes and strong identities that are completely recognizable to that film. Great film music is when you can hear something away from the film and it takes you back into that universe. And that can be as simple as a certain noise or a huge melody. And with Spider-Verse , we have created quite a unique melody and sound, so it’s really fun to keep expanding on that. Everything is connected in these two movies. Every sound and motif connects together.

One of the things that’s been interesting is watching the reactions of younger filmgoers who are starting to learn about cinema and film music and how surprised they are at thematic continuity and motifs that can connect characters. It is one of those very iconic and also straightforward parts of film music. But there hasn’t been a consistent approach, especially with the superhero movies over the last couple of decades. Often you have different composers scoring different episodes in different franchises, and if you look at The Lord of the Rings or Star Wars movies, there is a very strong thematic and melodic approach between those. You’ve got one vision, one composer, and with Spider-Verse , that’s what we’re trying to do. So, for a lot of younger people, that’s often quite new to them, which is obviously quite weird to me.

Yeah, it’s really difficult. In the good old days of film music, the composer would get a cut, write their piece of music, and then they’d record it and stick it on the film. And then there’s a round of applause for everyone. In the modern world and the modern way of film composing, everything changes all the time. So you might write something to picture, but then that picture might get slightly tweaked: something gets put in or extended or taken out at the last minute. So the music is always in flux, and while you can make that work for a film, you can’t do that when you have musicians playing it live. You have to make it in a way that is enjoyable and exciting for the musicians to play. If the musicians are only thinking about the technicality of very complicated tempo changes, which you might have when you’re editing a film to move between things, it is going to be a terrible live performance. So, like Ludwig, I had to go back to the beginning and rebuild the score, scene by scene. Some scenes will be slightly different on a very minuscule level. I’m talking tiny, tiny stuff, but you still have to build the whole thing from the ground up again, and that is very time consuming. It’s a bit like pulling a car apart and rebuilding it. You get to learn all the bits in the score again. But I saw Ludwig’s performance. It was brilliant, but I would not want to be a musician during that performance. It never stops. It’s exhausting. It’s a beautiful score, but Oppenheimer feels like the musician equivalent of running two marathons back to back.

I like to think it was the other way around because he saw mine first. ( Laughs .) So he came to my show, and we worked with some of the same people, actually. It was the same production team, so Mike Kasper from Black Ink worked on that with Ludwig. But we like to keep an eye on what each other is doing. We’re good friends, and I’ve got massive respect for his work. It also makes me a bit jealous, so that’s a good sign.

Are composers pretty competitive with one another?

Oh, for sure. The best film music in the world is stuff that makes 50 percent of me incredibly jealous and annoyed, because it’s better than anything I’ve done and it’s everything I aspire to do. And the other 50 percent is like, “This is everything film music should be.” So you’re incredibly excited because it’s everything you care about, and when you hear it done well, it’s very exciting. So it’s the 50-50 rule of excitement and jealousy. If you get that, then it’s a great score.

Ludwig also had tempo changes to account for, so they had to introduce a new click track just one bar before the tempo change happened on the page. Did you run into similar tempo challenges?

On Oppenheimer , there’s loads and loads of crazy tempo changes, and I remember Ludwig telling me about that when we were having a beer in London. And what’s interesting about that is you’ll get smudge and imperfection. Sometimes, this can be really interesting because players are not all going to play together, and we have something similar to that with Spot, the baddie in Across the Spider-Verse . I recorded multiple de-tuned cello parts that weren’t all in tune, and if you keep tracking stuff that’s de-tuned, it’s like drawing a line many times. If you draw a straight line once, and then you badly draw a line 60 times, you will start to get a feeling of where the central line is, making it very unstable and interesting. So we have something similar with the cellos. They’re detuned, but they all align around one melody. That’s more of a melodic idea than a tempo idea, but putting multiple tempo changes in is something I try to avoid. It’s a nightmare when it comes to editing, so if you don’t have to do it, don’t do it.

Yeah, it’s different, and I like working that way. It allows you to experiment and not be dictated to by the picture. So I will go through a very long process, which I call research and development, where I’ll try out loads of ideas and come up with sounds, themes, motifs. So I do write that way, but to do a film like Spider-Verse , the music is so reactive to the picture. You can’t just slap a track on and then go to the pub. You have to work at it so much to make it in sync with the visuals and in sync with the story, because the movie moves at an incredible pace and you have to hit so many different emotions and beats within seconds of each other. So I need to write themes that you recognize within two seconds because we are going to move somewhere else afterwards, and that’s a very complicated task. If you’re doing an indie film where you might have one tone or one mood, it’s easier to do that, but this has the movement of a big blockbuster. So you need music that’s incredibly nimble, and over the years, the only thing that’s been able to deal with that kind of nimbleness has been the symphony orchestra. So I was always like, “How do I create a sound and a palette and an approach that has the speed and nimbleness of a full orchestra but isn’t a full orchestra? Something new, something different.” And with Spider-Verse , we created all these techniques through scratching, turntables, weird electronic sound design, live orchestra drums, and we built a language that allowed me to write a score that could be that reactive to picture. But you try to do it in a way that hopefully feels elegant and simplistic enough that you don’t notice the movement.

The cue that bookends Across is probably my favorite, as Gwen’s ( Hailee Steinfeld ) heavy drum parts are right in my wheelhouse.

So I reworked it for that, and then much later, for the ending of the film, we didn’t know what to do and we tried different approaches. And then a great [supervising] music editor on Spider-Verse called Katie Greathouse, who’s a very important part of the team, just said, “Oh, why don’t we try that track over this?” So she just pulled it out and put it on, and we were like, “Fuck, this really works. Wow.” So I was like, “OK, the idea works, but I need to go away and rework it.” So I ran to this other office, because I was working in the same offices as all of them, and then I just wrote like crazy. And suddenly, we had the ending. So that was one of the most exciting moments for me; I felt we had something that was really special. By the way, that bit is great live. It’s such a fun ending to end a concert on.

Every live set list has a song or a cue that every musician anticipates, usually because it’s the most challenging piece. Is there one in particular that will allow your musicians to breathe easier once they nail it live?

So it’s a very unique and unusual way to experience cinema. I don’t know of anything else that’s like this communal experience with an audience. I know Americans like to make a lot more noise, but people are generally quite restrained in cinema. And I like that. I am not a big fan of lots of noise in the cinema, but when you see a film live with an orchestra and a band and a scratch DJ, make as much noise as you want. It’s a whole different way of seeing a film. So that’s why I’m excited for people to experience this on tour. You can’t have this cool and unique experience anywhere else.

If you were handed these exact movies in live-action or you went into them with the foreknowledge that they were live-action, how different would both scores be in your estimation?

I enjoyed it.

Cathy [Yan], the director, had a very strong and unusually different vision for how that film should feel and look, and I got very excited by that. So I felt that it was a way to be a bit more creative, and that score is probably close to what Spider-Verse sounds like. It’s more trashy guitar-based, but if you look at King Arthur: Legend of the Sword that I did with Guy Ritchie, that’s got a similar sort of aesthetic where I got to do something a bit more creative. So it always depends on the film and the filmmakers and the approach, really, but I like things where you can push at the edges a bit more.

From Aaron Sorkin and Danny Boyle to Spider-Verse , is there an underlying principle to working on opposite ends of the spectrum? Do these projects have more in common than people might realize?
