Land program promotions are per person for guests 1 and 2 for one pre- or post-cruise program only, subject to terms .

Explore prominent landmarks and extraordinary cities that define Spain, many of them World Heritage sites, an experience that will leave you with a deeper historical and cultural perspective of the country.

NOTE: this program ends in Madrid therefore departing flights need to be booked out of the Madrid International Airport. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or for those who use a wheelchair, walker or scooter due to the amount of walking, many steps and cobbled surfaces.

After disembarking the cruise ship in Barcelona, you will enjoy a leisurely and immensely scenic drive to the Poblet Monastery. A 12th-century church stands at the center of this sacred World Heritage site, which features a fortified royal residence. While touring, you will learn about the monks’ lifestyle in the Middle Ages and the mountainous route that connects this Cisterian monastery to two others.

Continuing on to the nearby medieval village of Montblanc, you can expect to see its Gothic churches, the royal palace and the city’s 14th-century stone walls, more than half of which still exist. Free time follows, during which you can explore further. The centrally located Plaza Mayor is a great starting point for shopping and people-watching.

Afterwards, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Zaragoza, the capital of the province that lies on the Ebro River. Upon arriving, you will check into the NH Collection Gran Hotel de Zaragoza or similar, where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend the next two hours or so exploring Zaragoza, especially the Old Town. Its star attraction is the multi-domed Basilica of Pilar, an important pilgrimage site. According to local legend, the Virgin Mary gave Saint James a pillar made of jasper here and instructed him to build a church on the site. This last version of El Pilar, as it’s known locally, was constructed beginning in the late 17th century.

You will next visit the ancient town of Medinaceli, which in Arabic and means “City on the Hill.” The Romans founded the city and structures from that time still remain, the most famous being a stone arch built in the 2nd century. Other highlights include a 17th-century palace and a Gothic church built even earlier.

Following lunch, you will settle in for a relaxing drive to Madrid, where you will check into the Eurostar Madrid Tower or similar hotel. The remainder of the day will be at your leisure with dinner on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will depart for Toledo, a city so architecturally rich that Spain has declared it a national monument. UNESCO agreed and designated the historic center a World Heritage site, in part because three religions existed harmoniously here—Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

As you walk through this extraordinary city on the Tagus River, you will get a genuine feel for what life was like here in the Middle Ages. The historic city center is that atmospheric. The Toledo Cathedral is particularly impressive, as it is considered one of Europe’s greatest Gothic buildings. Built over nearly three centuries, starting in 1226, the cathedral contains a spectacular high altar and two painting by El Greco, the famed painter that lived in Toledo.

Another spectacular El Greco painting hangs in the Church of Santo Tomé, while the 13th-century Synagogue of Saint Mary the White is known for its Mudejar-style horseshoe arches. Be sure to notice these elaborately decorated arches as you browse the interior.

Lunch follows, after which you will proceed to Madrid. As an introduction to Spain’s vibrant capital, you will drive past key landmarks before starting an enlightening walking tour in Plaza Mayor. This grand arcaded square in the heart of the city offers wonderful options for shopping and dining nearby, as you may discover during free time.

By late afternoon, you will return to the hotel, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will drive to Segovia, a World Heritage site perhaps best known for its aqueduct that was probably constructed during the reign of Roman emperor Trajan. Until about 100 years ago, the aqueduct still carried water from the Frio River into Segovia 10 miles away.

The Alcazar is another landmark that is impossible to miss. Construction began in the 12th century and its fabulous fairy-tale style supposedly inspired the design of the Walt Disney castle in part. You will also spend time in Segovia’s walled upper town, whose cathedral is the last Gothic one built in Spain. It stands where Isabella I was proclaimed the Queen of Castile in 1474.

Following lunch in Segovia, you will drive to the 16th-century Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial on the outskirts of Madrid. It too is a World Heritage site and celebrated for its austere appearance, which influenced Spanish architecture for the next half century or so. As you wander through the interior, the guide will describe the building’s illustrious history, including how King Philip II conceived El Escorial as a funerary monument for his father.

After visiting, you will return to the hotel in Madrid, where you will spend the evening with dinner on your own.

Following breakfast at the hotel and check out, you will transfer to the Madrid International Airport based on the departure of your flight. Luggage can be stored at the hotel for guests with flights that depart late in the day.

Sitting and chatting with newfound friends over barista-made coffee has long been a favorite pastime for our guests. Aboard Seven Seas Grandeur ™ you can now do so in an expanded outdoor section. Our chic metropolitan café with an elegant interior of muted pastels and crisp whites now seamlessly transitions to trendy al fresco seating, where you can sit and chat with clear views of the shimmering sea.

At the heart of Seven Seas Grandeur ™ is Compass Rose, the largest specialty restaurant across our fleet. This sophisticated venue, exquisite with chandeliers and bold Versace dinnerware, offers a multitude of choices to customize your meal. Savor a favorite like Chateaubriand Beef Tenderloin with a delicious red wine grain mustard sauce or an entirely new dish like the Malaysian-style braised beef short rib with curry sauce and Jasmine rice.

  • La Veranda Begin your day with breakfast at La Veranda and you’ll forever believe it really is the most important meal of the day. Take in gorgeous ocean views from quiet alcoves jutting out over an iridescent sea while savoring made-to-order omelets and other specialties. Price of US First-Class Mail Stamp to Rise to 73 Cents

Reuters

By David Shepardson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The price of first-class U.S. mail stamps will rise on Sunday to 73 cents from 68 cents, the latest in a series of price hikes.

The plan, announced in April and approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission in late May, raises overall mailing services product prices by 7.8%. So-called Forever first-class stamps can be used at any time - even after prices rise.

The U.S. Postal Service in November reported a $6.5 billion yearly net loss as first-class mail fell to the lowest volume since 1968. On Sunday, stamp prices will have risen 46% over 2019 when they were 50 cents.

USPS has been aggressively hiking stamp prices as it has lost over $100 billion since 2007. It is in the middle of a 10-year restructuring plan announced in 2021 that aims to eliminate $160 billion in projected losses over the next decade.

USPS is the world’s largest delivery operation, handling 123 billion pieces of mail and packages annually. It says it accounts for 44% of the world’s mail.

The agency has said it expects its "new pricing policy to generate $44 billion in additional revenue" by 2031.

First-class mail volume, which fell 6.1% in the 12 months ending Sept. 30, 2023, to 46 billion pieces, is down 53% since 2006 - to the lowest volume since 1968. It is used by most people to send letters and pay bills and is the highest revenue-generating mail class, accounting for $24.5 billion, or 31% of USPS 2023 revenue.

In April 2022, U.S. President Joe Bidensigned legislation providing USPS with about $50 billion in financial relief over a decade.

In May, U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy agreed to pause further planned consolidation of the Postal Service's processing network until at least January after a bipartisan group of senators raised concerns about the impact on mail deliveries.

Prime Day Deals For Cruisers July 2024

by Prof. Cruise · July 16, 2024

hillsdale college cruise 2024 prices

*As a member of Amazon’s affiliate program, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you on purchases made through links within this post. All funds go to support the work of the site. Thank you for the support!

After well over 50 cruises under my buffet pants ranging in length from one to twenty-one nights to locations all over the world from Alaska to Antarctica, I’ve found that most items you’ll find on popular cruise packing lists are totally unnecessary and just lead to clutter, additional stress, and extra expense. Same goes for the majority of items I see on widely circulating Amazon Prime Day lists. Now, of course, everyone is different and we all have our own unique needs and circumstances, so I encourage you to browse those other lists of discounted cruise essentials too. But here are five items I bring on every cruise, offered at deep discounts during Amazon Prime Days on July 16 and 17:

1. Sea Sickness Patches

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Sea Sick Patches

Sadly, I found out on my honeymoon cruise that I’m prone to sea sickness, so I always bring a pack of these motion sickness patches on every sailing. They are natural and can be placed behind your ear or on your stomach. Coupled with some ginger chews or lozenges (should I feel any queasiness coming on), they work great for me. During Prime Days (July 16 and 17), you can score a 24 count pack for $11.99, saving $20%.

2. Portable Phone Charger

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Portable Phone Charger

The last thing you want is for your phone to die right before an orca breaches feet in front of you on your Alaska cruise (consider that autobiographical). You’ll also want to keep your phone charged in airports, on long flights, etc. There are a number of great Prime Day deals on different models of portable chargers (depending on what kind of phone you have) HERE . The model pictured above is what I have and is 25% off during Prime Days.

Depending on the age of your cruise ship (newer ships tend to have more USB outlets), you may also want to pack a extra cruise ship approved (meaning it does NOT have a surge protector) outlets like:

A cruise approved device with extra outlets and USB chargers.

That one is 46% off during Prime Days.

3. Water Shoes

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Water Shoes

I’ve used water shoes on most of my cruises and the few times I’ve forgotten to pack them, I’ve regretted it (trust me, a visit to the medical center to retrieve a shard of glass from your heal is not anyone’s idea of cruise entertainment). Those pictured above are over 60% off during Prime Days.

4. Travel Clock

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Travel Clock

There are no clocks in cruise ship cabins and you do NOT want to be that person who shows up to the dining room 15 minutes after breakfast hours are over begging for some decent coffee and eggs benedict. Sure, you could just look at your phone, but it might be plugged in far away from you or hard to find in the dark. That’s why I always pack a travel clock. The one pictured above is priced at $11.99 during Prime Days ( 15% off ).

5. Clip Fan

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Clip Fan

Whether to keep cool at the gym (I clip mine to my iPad so I can watch Netflix while I peddle slower than a drunk sloth on a recumbent bike to justify constant cruise binging), for white noise to help you sleep, for air circulation in your cabin, or to keep you cool on your balcony or at the beach, I strongly recommend packing a small rechargeable clip fan like the one I have pictured above , on sale during Prime Days for $19.94 (45% off) .

Bonus Items

I don’t personally use packing cubes , over the door organizers , magnetic hooks , or luggage tag holders , but I know many who swear by one or all of these items. If interested, here are some deals on those too:

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Packing Cubes

You’ll also find some fabulous deals on luggage if you’re in the market for a new piece or set.

2024 Prime Day Deal for Cruisers: Prime Day Luggage Deals

Happy shopping and cruising! And with that…

Class Dismissed!
