Synchrony Bank specializes in co-branded store credit cards, offering a range of options for consumers looking to make purchases, earn rewards and build their credit.

Because store credit cards tend to have lower qualification standards than general purpose cards, many Synchrony Bank credit cards are appealing to borrowers looking to build credit. But generally, store cards feature drawbacks such as low credit limits, high annual percentage rates, limitations on where you can use them and restrictions on how you can redeem rewards.

And Synchrony specifically tends to earn poor ratings from cardholders. For instance, in a 2022 J.D. Power customer satisfaction survey that included around a dozen of the largest credit card issuers, Synchrony was ranked next to last.

Still, Synchrony Bank has a large portfolio of credit cards based on relationships with many retailers, and some of its cards are better and more useful than others. Let’s take a look at a few of the most popular cards from Synchrony’s credit card portfolio.

Synchrony-branded credit cards

Synchrony Premier World Mastercard

Though it's best known for its co-branded credit cards with specific retailers, Synchrony also carries some credit cards directly under the Synchrony name. The most heavily marketed of those include the following $0-annual-fee cards, which can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted:

The Synchrony Premier World Mastercard® , which offers 2% cash back on every purchase to individuals with excellent credit (FICO scores of 720 or higher).

The Synchrony Plus World Mastercard , which is designed for those with at least good credit (scores of 690 or higher) and earns 1% cash back on every purchase.

The Synchrony Preferred World Mastercard , which is the bank’s credit-building card, offering a variable APR and no rewards to individuals with fair credit (scores of at least 630).

Of those cards, the Synchrony Premier World Mastercard® is the standout: The ability to earn 2% back on all purchases puts it among the best flat-rate rewards cards on the market. However, unlike some competitors, you'll need excellent credit to qualify, and there are no upfront incentives, such as a sign-up bonus or 0% intro APR offer.

Synchrony also has branded cards for specific shopping needs. These cards can each be used at specific retailers, and they offer special financing terms like deferred interest:

Synchrony HOME offers promotional financing with a variety of home goods and home improvement retailers.

Synchrony Car Care can be used on certain car repairs and gas purchases.

Synchrony's CareCredit Card is offered in many doctor's and dentist's offices, as a financing vehicle for medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Synchrony Outdoors is designed for purchases of power sports vehicle accessories, parts and service. Power sports vehicles are excluded.

Note that the deferred interest financing available on many Synchrony credit cards doesn't work like a true 0% intro APR offer (in which interest is waived — not deferred — during the promotional period). With a deferred interest offer, if you haven’t fully paid off your balance before the promotional term ends, you’ll owe interest on the full amount of the transaction, retroactive to the purchase date.

Synchrony co-branded credit cards

Some of the following co-branded cards are "closed loop" products, meaning they can be used only on purchases with that co-branded partner. Others, though, are "open loop," meaning they can be used anywhere that accepts credit cards.

Lowe's Advantage Card

MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card

Die-hard DIYers may gravitate to the MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card for one main reason: Cardholders get a 5% discount on purchases when paying with the card in full at checkout. The card also features deferred interest on eligible purchases, but note that these two offers can’t be combined.

Either benefit could help you finance expensive home improvements or repairs.

» MORE: Lowe's vs. Home Depot credit cards

Synchrony Bank Sams Club Mastercard Credit Card

Sam's Club® Mastercard®

With the Sam's Club® Mastercard® , members of the popular warehouse club can earn 3% cash back on dining and an even better 5% at gas and EV charging stations. That makes it one of the best gas credit cards on the market. It’s also a decent pick for those with a Sam’s Club Plus level membership, with less impressive rewards for base-level members.

The card comes with a variety of rules and rewards caps, so maximizing its value can take some work.

» MORE: Sam's Club vs. Costco credit cards

PayPal Cashback Mastercard

PayPal Cashback Mastercard®

The PayPal Cashback Mastercard® is one of just a handful of credit cards on the market today that earns 2% cash back — or more — on every purchase. That rate bumps up to 3% for any purchase made with PayPal. Considering the widespread acceptance of PayPal, especially online, the PayPal Cashback Mastercard® could be a lucrative card indeed for the right shopper.

Note that if you don't already have a PayPal account, you'll need to open one to get the card. Also, the card doesn’t offer much in the way of upfront incentives.

Venmo Credit Card

» MORE: PayPal credit card vs. Apple Card

Venmo Credit Card

Holders of the Venmo Credit Card can earn excellent reward rates with very little effort. The card automatically gives you 3% back on your top spending category for the month (from a list of eight), and 2% on the next highest spending area (from one of the remaining seven eligible categories). You'll get 1% back on all other purchases. This feature allows for a customized yet seamless experience.

You'll need to use the card in tandem with the Venmo app, though. So as with the PayPal Cashback Mastercard® , you'll need to have a Venmo account first.

» MORE: PayPal vs. Venmo credit cards

Verizon Visa® Card

If your goal for a credit card is to minimize your cell phone bill, the Verizon Visa® Card is an excellent option. You'll enjoy high reward rates on popular categories, including 4% back at grocery stores and gas stations. But those rates are undercut a bit by limited redemption options: Rewards can only be redeemed toward Verizon purchases such as a new phone, a monthly cell phone bill or on travel booked through Verizon’s travel portal.

Direct cash back isn't an option, nor does the card offer cell phone insurance.

Is a Synchrony credit card right for you?

Synchrony has no shortage of store credit cards, some of which could be useful for you if they align with stores where you frequently shop. And because store credit cards are usually easier to get than other general-purpose cards, they can help you build credit.

Before applying, though, it's crucial to weigh those benefits versus potential drawbacks, like high APRs and limited rewards redemption. For many consumers, a store credit card that can be used at only a handful of merchants is too restrictive. In that case, a general rewards credit card is more versatile. Synchrony offers some of those cards, too, and they can be solid choices depending on your spending habits.

Synchrony Bank credit cards

This giant may be behind your favorite retail credit card – here’s what you need to know

How we Choose

The name “Synchrony Bank” may not be as recognizable as credit card companies like Wells Fargo or Barclays, but the biggest issuer of retail credit cards in the U.S. offers tons of store cards you’ve probably heard of.

The content on this page is accurate as of the posting date; however, some of our partner offers may have expired. Please review our list of best credit cards , or use our CardMatch™ tool to find cards matched to your needs.

With most traditional credit cards, the name of the issuing bank is obvious from the get-go: the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card , the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card , and so on.

But with store credit cards , the issuer name takes a back seat to the store itself. Unless the card is already in your wallet, you probably don’t know which financial institution issues the Victoria’s Secret Angel credit card , for instance. (Spoiler alert: The answer is Comenity Bank .)

Another under-the-radar name in the retail credit card space is Synchrony Bank. Keep reading to learn more about the store cards it issues – and whether one of them could be right for you.

What is Synchrony Bank?

If you’ve ever held a private-label credit card – also known as a retail card – there’s a good chance it was issued by Synchrony Bank, a consumer financial services company and the largest issuer of such cards in the U.S.

Retail credit cards are largely similar to general-purpose credit cards, with one major difference: In most cases, they’re branded for a specific retailer, independent dealer or manufacturer. (That said, some closed-loop retail cards , such as the Old Navy Credit Card, also work at affiliated brands, including Athleta and Banana Republic. There are also open-loop store cards, such as the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Mastercard® , that can be used anywhere the payment network is accepted.)

Store cards like those offered by Synchrony are usually easier to qualify for than general-purpose cards, making them a good choice for people who are either new to credit or recovering from a credit stumble.

What stores partner with Synchrony Bank?

Synchrony partners with stores of all sizes and industries – from national clothing chains to local furniture shops – to offer credit cards or other financing programs to customers.

Most popular Synchrony Bank cards

Synchrony’s diverse list of retail partners means you’re likely to find at least one store credit card worth considering. As with all types of debt, though, think through the potential advantages (purchase discounts and special offers) and drawbacks (such as a new hard inquiry , plus the potential to overspend) before deciding whether to apply for another card.

Below are some of the most popular Synchrony Bank credit cards among the issuer’s current lineup.

If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, the Lowe’s Advantage Credit Card could make a handy addition to your toolbelt. With no annual fee, 20% off your first purchase (for an up to $100 discount) and an automatic 5% discount on all other purchases, you could end up saving some serious cash as you spruce up your abode.

A caveat: The ongoing 5% savings can’t be combined with the card’s special financing offers, so you’ll have to pick one or the other. Unless you’re taking on a pretty big renovation, the immediate discount is your best bet – it eliminates the risk you’ll have to pay a ton of deferred interest if you have a remaining balance at the end of the promo period.

If more road trips than flights are in your future, the Sam’s Club Mastercard is perfect for swiping at the pump. The card offers a generous 5% cash back rate on gas purchased at Sam’s Club and most other fuel stations. You’ll also score 3% cash back on dining purchases, which can take some of the sting out of those fast-food visits between stops. (And when you’re ready to return to the skies, 3% cash back on travel isn’t too shabby either.)

Unlike other cash back credit cards , though, rewards earned with the Sam’s Club Mastercard are issued as a check just once a year, in February.

Longtime Verizon customers (or those willing to switch carriers) might want to consider the Verizon Visa Card , which offers strong rewards in several everyday spending categories – a rarity among retail cards. Cardholders get 4% back on grocery store and gas purchases, 3% back on dining purchases, 2% back on Verizon purchases (including devices and monthly bills) and 1% back on all other spending.

The downside is that your rewards are issued as Verizon Dollars, which can only be redeemed for Verizon purchases, such as a new phone or your monthly service bill. If you’d rather trade in your cash back for, well, cash, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Like the Verizon Visa, the PayPal Cashback Mastercard is a “diamond in the rough” among store credit cards. In fact, it rivals one of our highest-rated flat-rate cash back cards – the Citi® Double Cash Card – thanks to unlimited 2% cash back on every purchase (1% when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases), no minimum redemption requirements and no annual fee to eat into your earnings.

Unless you’re a frequent PayPal user, though, the extra steps needed to claim your rewards may be a bit cumbersome – rewards can only be redeemed as statement credits to your PayPal account. And cardholders who are adept at finding the best travel redemptions may be able to earn a higher rewards rate with a more flexible cash back card.

The Rakuten Cash Back Visa Credit Card rewards you with 3% cash back on qualifying purchases made through Rakuten.com, In-Store Cash Back offers, Rakuten Hotels and Rakuten travel. The ability to stack those rewards with cash back offers at Rakuten’s affiliate stores – which regularly feature rates of up to 5% or more – makes this a lucrative card for Rakuten die-hards. As an open-loop card, it also earns 1% cash back on all other purchases.

Despite its inflexible redemption program, the Rakuten card deserves a closer look if you’re an American Express cardholder. Pairing it with an eligible Amex card could earn you 3x Membership Rewards points on top of those earned through a Rakuten cash back offer

How to apply for a Synchrony Bank card

The easiest way to apply for Synchrony Bank credit cards is online. Go to MySynchrony.com , then click “Where to Shop” at the top of the page. You can search for a specific retailer, browse through the bank’s partnering stores or filter cards by shopping category, such as home furnishings or sporting goods. If you find a card you’re interested in, click “Apply” and supply the requested information.

List of Synchrony Bank credit cards

Many of Synchrony’s partner stores also let you apply online or through their own websites. Alternatively, you can visit a merchant in person and request an application from an employee. Some cards offer one-time, same-day discounts upon credit approval, so you may want to wait until you’re ready to make a big purchase in order to maximize your savings.

Should you apply for a Synchrony Bank card?

Admittedly, retail credit cards can be a mixed bag. Between high interest rates and confusing deferred-interest promotions , you could find yourself deep in debt if you’re not careful. That said, if you need to build or rebuild credit – or you’re a particularly loyal shopper who could regularly save money from purchase discounts and special sales – a store-branded Synchrony Bank credit card could work in your favor.

But if you’d rather avoid the temptation to overspend at your favorite retailer, you might be better off with a traditional credit-building credit card. Whichever route you take, remember the cardinal rule of responsible credit use: Never charge more than you can afford to pay in full every month.

While you might not hear of Synchrony as often as Chase , Citi , or American Express , they provide over 100 credit card options to consumers. Many of these cards are linked to popular brands including Amazon, eBay, and PayPal. Some of these cards offer some interesting cash-back opportunities. Synchrony offers a co-branded airline card with Cathay Pacific and their co-branded store cards have been particularly popular as well. Similar to  Comenity Bank , which also offers tons of store-branded credit cards, Synchrony store credit cards are often easier to obtain than some other cards. One big difference between the two banks is that Synchrony does not have a shopping cart trick that allows applicants to open store cards without a hard pull on their credit reports. Let’s take a look at the many cards offered by Synchrony and discuss some of the best and most popular cards they provide. Note: We’ve researched a list of cards that typically offer better rewards than store cards do — and with 0% introductory APR which these cards below do not offer.

Best Synchrony Credit Cards

Synchrony offers a wide range of credit cards, but we’ve narrowed down this big list down to our top 3 cards for travel and everyday spending.

The Amazon Prime Store Card offers 5% cash-back on all purchases on Amazon. That alone makes this card worth it for many frequent Amazon shoppers . You must have an eligible Amazon Prime membership to receive the 5% cash-back on your purchases. If you do not have a Prime membership, you will only be able to use the Amazon.com Store Card, which does not earn 5% cash-back on purchases at Amazon. Amazon is regularly one of the quarterly bonus categories for cards such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited ® . But with the Amazon Prime Store Card, you can get 5% cash-back all year. This card comes with no annual fee.

Cathay Pacific A350

The Cathay Pacific Visa is your best bet for a travel rewards card from Synchrony. The card comes with a larger sign-up bonus than you’ll generally find with any Synchrony credit card, and it has a $95 annual fee that is not waived the first year. It earns 2X miles per dollar on purchases with Cathay Pacific, 1.5X miles per dollar on dining purchases in the U.S. or abroad, 1.5X miles per dollar on other purchases abroad, and 1X miles per dollar on other domestic purchases. This card doesn’t have foreign transaction fees, so the 1.5X miles per dollar could be useful when traveling abroad . You should still use a card such a the  Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card  that earns more valuable points on bonus categories such as dining and travel when abroad. If you’re a more advanced user of miles and points, you can redeem Asia Miles for some awesome trips on Cathay Pacific and their partners.

Synchrony offers both a business and personal version of the Sam’s Club Mastercard . These cards both earn 5% cash-back on purchases at gas stations and 3% cash-back at restaurants. All other purchases earn 1% cash-back. The 5% cash-back at gas stations is limited to your first $6,000 spent. Additionally, a maximum of $5,000 in cash-back may be earned in total per calendar year. Sam’s Club also offers store card versions, but they cannot be used at other merchants. While the Mastercard versions can be used at any merchant that accepts Mastercard, the Sam’s Club Credit Card can only be used at Sam’s Club . Neither version of the Sam’s Club Mastercard has an annual fee , but they do require a Sam’s Club membership.

Offered exclusively to Verizon Wireless customers, the Verizon Visa Rewards card is an excellent no-annual-fee card option for those who have their cell phone through Verizon Wireless. The card earns Verizon Dollars, which can be redeemed for any Verizon products or services. Each Verizon dollar is equivalent to $1 in value, and there are no caps on earning or expiration dates. The rewards rate for the Verizon Visa card is quite strong, offering 4% back on gas and grocery purchases, 3% back on dining purchases, 2% back on Verizon purchases (including your phone bill), and 1% back on all other purchases. Cardholders will receive a few solid perks, too. For starters, cardholders will receive up to $100 in wireless bill credits over 24 consecutive months for monthly bill payments — this breaks down to about $4.16 each month. You’ll also be eligible for an auto-pay discount of $5 to $10 each month when you use your card to pay your Verizon bill, depending on the type of plan you have . This perk alone could be hugely beneficial if you plan to stay with Verizon long term, as you’ll save $60-$120 each year. All in all, the Verizon card is a fantastic option for Verizon customers, that offers great discounts and great bonus categories, all for a no annual fee card!

Synchrony’s Most Popular Cards

There are many other Synchrony cards, but let’s take a look at some of their most popular cards.

American Eagle Outfitters

American Eagle Outfitters is a retail clothing store geared toward college-aged young adults. Additionally, they launched Aerie to compete with brands such as Victoria’s Secret . The  AEO Connected Visa Credit Card earns 15 points per $1 spent at American Eagle or Aerie stores. All other purchases earn 5 points per $1. Once a shopper reaches 2,5000 points, they receive a $10 reward coupon that can be used toward future purchases with either brand. Cardholders will also receive free standard shipping, a 20% off birthday coupon, a personal shopping day coupon, special cardholder events, and more.

The Ashley Furniture HomeStore credit card ( review ) is more of a financing program than a true credit card. It can only be used at Ashley Furniture HomeStores and offers 4 different financing offers upon sign-up. The 6- and 12-month financing plans do not require a minimum purchase, and the purchase may be made online or in-store and combined with discount offers. The 24- and 48-month plans have minimum purchase requirements, but the purchase may still be completed online or in-store. It cannot be combined with discount offers. The 60-month financing plan is only valid for in-store purchases and cannot be used with discount offers.

This card was moved to Barclays as of June 17, 2022.

Belk offers 3 versions of their store card, but you have to reach spending thresholds to be upgraded from the basic Belk Rewards card. The Belk Rewards card earns 1 point per dollar at Belk and allows returns without a receipt. If you spend $600 in a calendar year, you get these benefits plus special savings offers. With $1,500 in spending in a calendar year, more benefits are added including free shipping, quarterly “Pick Your Own Sales Days” that provide 20% off, and a 20% off coupon for your birthday.

The Chevron and Texaco Visa cards earn 3 cents per gallon in fuel credits on purchases with Chevron and Texaco. Additionally, you can earn 10 cents per gallon in fuel credit when you spend $300 at other merchants each month. If you spend $1,000 at other merchants in a given month, you’ll receive a discount of 20 cents per gallon. These fuel credits must be redeemed at Chevron or Texaco gas stations .

The Discount Tire/America’s Tire credit card provides a no-interest promo for your first purchase . The promotional no-interest timeframe can be 6 months, 9 months, or 12 months. To qualify for 6 months of no interest, your purchase must be between $199 and $999.99. To qualify for 9 months of no interest, your purchase must be between $1,000 and $1,499.99. Finally, purchases of $1,500 or more qualify for a no-interest 12 months. (There are also many credit cards with 0% interest rates for up to 18 months if that’s something you’re specifically looking for in a card.)

Lowe's Store

The Lowe’s Advantage Card provides a 5% discount on all purchases from Lowe’s. You can also choose to receive a 6-month special financing promotion if your purchase is at least $299. If your project will cost over $2,000, you will be eligible for project financing. Additionally, Lowe’s offers 2 business credit cards through Synchrony that provides the 5% discount. American Express also provides a co-branded Lowe’s card that provides a 5% discount at Lowe’s but can be used at other merchants as well.

The Rooms To Go credit card provides a promotional offer of interest-free financing for 60 months on qualifying purchases. Similar to the credit card from Ashley Furniture HomeStore , the Rooms To Go credit card really only provides an option to finance purchases since the card cannot be used anywhere else.

The TJX Rewards card (sometimes called the T.J. Maxx credit card) is part of the Mastercard network, so it can be used at other merchants as well. There is also a store card version that can only be used at stores that are part of TJX Companies. Both cards earn 5X points per dollar at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Sierra Trading Post stores, while the Mastercard also earns 1X points per dollar on purchases at other merchants. For every 1,000 points you earn, you will receive a $10 certificate that can be redeemed at any of the stores in the TJX family.

While Synchrony does not have a “Shopping Cart Trick” like Comenity Bank credit cards to make approvals much easier, they are still considered a bank that is more likely to approve applicants. To give yourself the best chance of approval, make sure you take care of your credit score. If you pay off your credit card bill and never carry a balance, your credit score will be in much better shape. If you’re not paying off your card completely (which you really should be!) as a general rule, make sure that you’re not within 60% of your credit limit usage at the time of statement closing. If you ignore this, you’ll be demonstrating that you’re a consumer who really needs the bulk of their limit, which is a worrying sign to the banks! The goal is to pay off your statement every month. If you can’t, then make sure that the payment you make reduces any balance to less than 60% of your credit limit. For example, if your credit limit is $500, make sure your closing balance (after making a payment) is less than $300. The lower, the better! Also, keep your oldest credit card open since the length of your opened accounts is an important part of building a foundation for your credit score . There are many reports of people being approved for Synchrony store cards with credit scores in the 600s. While there are many factors for approval and this doesn’t make an approval a guarantee, it can give you an idea of what to expect with Synchrony credit cards. If this credit score is still too much of a leap for you, consider starting with a secured credit card .

If you’d like more options, you can read our dedicated article on the easiest credit cards to get approved for.

While there are clearly tons of options for credit cards from Synchrony, what they have in quantity, they seriously lack in quality . The Amazon Store Card , Sam’s Club cards , and Cathay Pacific Visa card might be useful to a small segment of the population, but there’s a reason we don’t hear about Synchrony cards as much as Chase or American Express. When it comes to earning miles and points for travel, Synchrony has almost nothing to offer. The Cathay Pacific Visa has its place, but it’s definitely not for beginners. If you’re just starting out, stick with earning Chase Ultimate Rewards  and follow our express guide for beginners to make the most of your credit card applications. Like many, he started this journey searching for cheap flights to take him around the world. This was fun for a while, but Spencer was intrigued by the idea of flying in business and first class!

Throwing himself into what became an extensive research project, Spencer spent 3-4 hours per night learning everything he could about frequent flyer miles over the course of several months (he thinks this is normal). He runs Straight to the Points, an award-seat alert platform.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
