Chalkida (Chalcis) on Evia Island, Less Visited Greece

We moved to Athens a few years ago. Soon enough, we were traveling around the islands. Little did we know that Chalkida was one of the nicest places to visit in Greece . What’s more, Chalkida city is just 50 miles (80 km) from Athens. However, it is worlds apart. The area is scarcely populated and packed with gorgeous beaches.

Chalkida is the biggest settlement on Evia Island, the closest to the Attica peninsula. The city is on the peninsula and the island. The area on the peninsula is called Xirovrisi. To go from one to the other, all you have to do is cross Chalkida’s Old Bridge. Both sections are beautiful and worth your time. Take note that some Greeks call Chalkida City Chalcis.

Chalkida Evia Greece

How to Get to Chalkida

Driving to chalkida.

Driving to Chalkida from Athens takes a bit over an hour. All you have to do is exit central Athens and take the road to Thessaloniki . The road is called Pireos-Athinon-Thessalonikis. You can take it directly from Piraeus port. Likewise, you can take it from Athens Airport. After some 45 minutes, you will see the signs to Chalcis Regional.

It’s a safe drive on a modern highway. We believe Greeks drive better on highways than in cities, so you have nothing to worry about. Note that you will have to pay a toll. It’s less than 3.5 euros. The road will take you pretty close to Tatoi Palace, the former residence of the deposed King. The forest around the palace is amazing.

Trains to Chalkida

We went from Athens to Chalkida on the train   and had a great time. We always try to take public transportation anywhere we go. There are trains every other hour, and the journey takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. Trains leave from Athens Central Station . You can take the metro to go to the train station from anywhere in Athens.

The closest metro station to Athens train station is Larissa, on the red line. It’s the line that goes from the Akropoli and stops in Syntagma Square. The earliest train leaves at 4:30 AM, and the latest at 11:30 PM. The same applies to return trains. The ticket costs from 3 to 9 euros each way. Trains arrive pretty close to the center of Chalkida.

Chalkida Railway Station

Buses to Chalkida

There are buses too, but these can take up to 3 hours. However, most take the advertised 1.5 hours. The journey is an attraction in itself, so be sure to grab a window seat. We took a bus once because the trains were on strike. Buses in Greece are pretty safe. Drivers never exceed the speed limit and the units are in good shape.

Buses to Chalkida leave from the KTEL Liosion station on 43 Dagkli Street. The closest metro station is Agios Nikolaos, on the green line that goes to Piraeus. This one stops in Monastiraki and Omonia squares. There are buses almost every hour, starting at 6:30 AM. The last one is at 10 PM. The bus station in Chalkida is across the New Archeological Museum, away from the center.

Where to Stay in Chalkida

Chalkida, like all of Greece, has fantastic hotels. The best hotel near Chalkida is the Amaronda Resort & Spa . It’s a luxurious hotel with a private beach, a gorgeous pool, and a state-of-the-art spa. The hotel is 10 miles (16 km) from Chalkida city. Take an inexpensive taxi, and you’ll be there in 20 minutes.

The best hotel in the city proper is the Almira Mare , on Xirovrisi. That’s the quiet part of town, just 10 minutes by taxi to the center. It’s a beachfront property with a big pool set in lush green gardens. To stay in the city center, book a room at the Paliria Hotel . It offers super comfortable rooms and memorable sea views.

Things to Do in Chalkida (Chalcis)

Climb the karababa castle.

Chalkida’s most famous attraction is the Karababa Castle . The beautiful fortress sits on a hill just 15 minutes walking from Chalkida’s seaside promenade. The Ottomans built it in 1684 to protect Evia Island from the Venetians. However, Venetian architect Gerolimo Galopo designed it. That’s why it looks European. It’s an easy way up. However, if you are tired, hop on a taxi.

The structure is well preserved. Walk along the grounds and search for the two Russian cannons, a bell tower, a defense tower, and a couple of bastions. Be sure to check Prophet Elias Church from 1895 within the compound. There’s also an onsite museum with a couple of interesting sculptures. The views from the castle will take your breath away. Free entrance!

Karababa Castle

Walk along the Sea Promenade

Of all the things to do in Chalkida, a walk along the sea promenade is mandatory. It’s the nicest part of the city. That’s why locals visit all day long. Restaurants, hotels, bars, and shops line the promenade. Note that the promenade begins on Asteria Beach in Xirovrisi and ends on Agios Nikolaos plaza, in Chalkida city.

The section on Xirovrisi is smaller but offers great views of the city proper. We are talking about some 1500 feet (400 m) from Asteria beach to the bridge. Once you cross the bridge, you’ll be in the center. This is the most visited section, where most bars and restaurants are. Pick your favorite tavern and mingle with the locals.

Chalkida City Hall

Visit a Synagogue and a Jewish Cemetery

Though Greece is mostly a Christian Orthodox country, Jews have always been part of its culture. In fact, the Jewish settlement in Chalkida is one of the oldest in Greece. Historic records indicate that Jews lived north of the fortress 2000 years ago! The original synagogue was destroyed in 1854. The one we can see today is from 1855.

The Synagogue is two blocks from the Archaeological Museum. The Cemetery is a 15 minute walk to the east. It’s a 17-acre lovely park with tall trees. Actually, there’s a new cemetery and an old one. Some of the tombs in the old section are over 1000 years old! There’s a memorial for the Jews that died in the holocaust.

Jewish Quarter of Chalkida

Learn History in the Archeological Museum

Just like in most cities in Greece, there’s an Archaeological Museum in Chalkida. The museum is a neoclassical building from the early 20th century. It’s a small museum on Venizelou Street, a 5-minute walk from the seaside promenade. It opens from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM every day except Tuesdays. However, the collection inside is pretty interesting.

It’s got three exhibit halls and a lovely courtyard. The first hall exhibits pieces from the Neolithic period. Most of the artifacts were found on the island of Evia. There are also Roman pieces. The coin collection is particularly interesting. The newest pieces are from the 1 st Century AC. That’s how old Greece is! Spend some time in the courtyard admiring the sculptures.

Get Lost in the Old Town

Chalkida’s Old Town is a maze of little streets and aisles. The old town is the area from the sea promenade all the way to the Jewish Cemetery. Orange trees and all kinds of plants line the streets. All you have to do is walkabout. It can get very hot in Chalkida in summer, so don’t forget to wear a hat.

The atmosphere is very relaxed. Local people visit the area to grab a bite, shop and socialize. There are several churches and traditional Greek houses to discover. The Cultural Museum of Chalkida is in the center. It’s a refurbished old industrial plant. Go in and learn about the history of Evia.

Chalkida Old Town

Visit the Saint Paraskevi Church

The Church of Saint Paraskevi is the most relevant medieval building in the city. The original church was built in the 5 th Century AD. The one we can see today is most likely from the 17 th Century. Regardless of its age, the temple will take your breath away. The church in the old town is five minutes walking from the sea promenade.

As important as this Byzantine temple is, it’s simple and elegant. We are talking about a three-nave church with tall white-washed walls. The wooden roof is one of the oldest Venetian roofs in the world. Go inside and prepare to be dazzled. You can see original frescoes and exquisite decorations. There are catacombs beneath the church!

Saint Paraskevi Church Chalkida

Visit the Chalcis Mosque

Locals call the temple Emir Zade Mosque . It’s pretty near to Saint Paraskevi Church. We are talking about a splendid Ottoman Mosque from the 15 th Century. Besides, it’s in great condition. Mohammed the Conqueror built it after taking over Evia. Rumor has it that he destroyed a church that was on the spot. Look out for the archaeological remains outside the mosque.

Today, part of the mosque has been left untouched, and part is a museum. The collection is mostly Byzantine. We liked the maps of the city from the 16 th and 18 th Centuries. You can also see some of the original water channels. The courtyard is beautiful. Look for Mehmed Fountain in the courtyard. There are also ottoman tombs.

Enjoy Delicious Food

In Chalkida, you can enjoy some of the best food in the country. Since most restaurants cater to the local population, the food is traditional and varied. Delicious taverns dot the entire city. Our favorite is Grocery 1922 , near the Mosque. The store/restaurant is 100 years old! You will want to eat and buy everything.

The best grill in the city is Gourounaki , on the sea promenade. Everything is locally sourced and delicious. To eat with views of the city, head to Tsafaki Chalkida8 , two blocks from the bridge in Xirovrisi. The best seafood restaurant is Giannis . The seafront tavern is on Athanathon Square. Our favorite coffee shop is Mostar , by the bridge. Killer views guaranteed.

Mostar cafe Chalkida

Spend Some Time on the Beach

The nicest in the area is Alykes Beach , a 10-minute drive from the center of Chalkida. It’s a splendid sandy beach with crystal blue waters. You can rent umbrellas and lounges or take your own. If you get hungry, you’ve got great restaurants to choose from. We love it because it’s near the city, but there are no big buildings.

Chalkida has a couple of nice urban beaches. Our favorite is Asteria Beach , on Xirovrisi. It’s a sandy beach with tall trees and calm waters. Kourenti Beach is on Evia Island. It’s another sandy beach with blue waters. From there, walk to the Lighthouse Bad Head of Chalkida . The gorgeous park and lighthouse is the best place to enjoy sunsets.

Valopula Drosias Beach

Organize a Day Trip to Eretria

Eretria is on the island of Evia, the second-largest in Greece. The little town is only 12 miles (20 km) from Chalkida. You can take a public bus from the center and be in Eretria in approximately 45 minutes. Ask directly at the train station for directions to the bus stop. You are in Greece: people are super nice and friendly!

A taxi from Chalkida to Eretria takes 20 minutes and should cost no more than 25 eur. Since Eretria was important in ancient Greece, it has an archeological park with a museum and an ancient amphitheater. Today, the town is very atmospheric and authentic. You’ll probably be the only foreigner. The best beaches are the ones at the Amaronta and Negroponte luxury hotels.

Chalkida, greece: the hidden charm of a city with a loyal audience.

A unique and first-hand experience of an amazingly diverse city

BY ANGELIKI KOUROUTZI

Published 06 may 2022.

The greatest charm of the second largest island of Greece may be hidden in the mere 80 kilometres that separate it from the capital. Euboea is so close that we often forget that it’s still an island.

A huge island, indeed, with Chalkida as its capital, a city with an extremely long history and many loyal admirers. Conducting a quick and absolutely unsubstantiated survey among friends and acquaintances, one can easily conclude that there must not be an Athenian who has not visited Chalkida at least once in their life, even for a few hours. It is a destination for all , which is why on weekends it is filled with families, couples of all ages, groups of friends – young and old.

However, although Chalkida is consistently among the first choices of Athenians for an excursion, most of us often overlook the history and the hidden charm of the place and repeat over and over again the same itinerary, i.e., a walk along the seaside promenade to the red house, coffee break by the “crazy waters” of Euripus and then back to the car and off for fresh fish and seafood in the otherwise excellent ouzo taverns in Nea Lampsakos.

The current appearance of the city of Chalkida diligently hides its great architectural past/ Photo: Angeliki Kouroutzi

The truth is that the modern city of Chalkida in no way betrays its architectural past. The entire city until 1885 was surrounded by walls in a medieval castle , while an artificial moat made it look like a small autonomous island in the thin strip of sea that separates Euboea from Central Greece. It was its strategic location that attracted the interest of the city’s first inhabitants, who, sensing correctly that it would bring them power and wealth, settled in the area as early as the Palaeolithic era. The first important prehistoric settlement with elements of early urbanization (houses, roads, open assembly areas such as squares, but also public utilities, such as clay pipes that drained rainwater) dates back to 3000 BC and was found 5 km northwest of Chalkida, at Manika . The city of Chalkida seems to have taken its name from that time thanks to the specialisation of the inhabitants of Manika in metallurgy and copper trade. The city of Chalkida was founded around 800 BC, at the same time as the city of Eretria.

The Venetian Negroponte / D. Gofas – D. Triantafylopoulos, Engravings of Euboea, Collection of Yannis K. Karakosta. Society of Euboean Studies, Athens 1999

Many centuries and countless chapters of history later, around the 6th century AD, Justinian fortified Chalkida, as both the city and the entire island of Euboea were of particular naval importance to the Byzantine Empire. In 1205 AD, the most glorious period for Chalkida began, the Latin period, during which the medieval castle was reconstructed and its walls were strengthened, while the city became known as Negroponte , a powerful Venetian port and headquarters of the Venetian fleet . Although by 1461 AD Negroponte had been significantly fortified, it was unable to repel the attack of the Turks, who had already begun to spread into Greece, and finally in 1470 Mohammed II himself conquered Chalkis .

The city remained under the Turkish rule until 1833. Chalkida retained its impressive walls and its multicultural character even after its liberation. But in 1885 the legendary castle was demolished by the Greeks and the building materials resulting from its demolition were used to cover the moat. This is how Chalkida reached its architectural present day, a city we often think we know quite well, but which itself still holds countless hidden secrets. The following stops in the modern city unfold another map of Chalkida, hidden for years, and reveal the other face of this ancient city, so that we can finally view Chalkida in a different light.

The new Archaeological Museum of Chalkida “Arethoussa” opened its doors to the public at the beginning of 2021/ Photo: Angeliki Kouroutzi

The new archaeological museum “arethoussa”.

It is located near the port of Chalkida during the classical and Roman times, in the district of Agios Stefanos, where the springs of the mythical Arethoussa gush gurgling waters to this day. It is housed in a 20th century industrial building , the old distillery “Arethoussa SA”, which is an exhibit in its own right and has been declared a World Heritage Site . The new Archaeological Museum of Chalkida, “Arethoussa”, opened its doors to the public at the beginning of 2021 and constitutes a valuable orientation medium for visitors to both Chalkida and the whole of Euboea. The museum is thematic and presents four main aspects of Chalkida’s history – urban organization, worship, economy and cultural identities and it also includes sub-theme sections, such as the history of the building that houses it. Short videos and multimedia applications accompany the sections of the museum, which offers a modern, interactive museum experience for visitors. The museum is also accessible to people with disabilities.

The museum is free of admission. Opening hours : Monday – Sunday 08.30 to 15.30, Tuesday closed.

Visit the castle of karababa.

The impenetrable castle of Karababa stands proudly on the site of the ancient city of Kanithos on the mainland coast of Chalkida, overseeing not only the strait of Euripus, but also a large part of the Euboean gulf. The fortress was built in 1684 by the Ottomans, who equipped it with 6 cannons below, 14 on the roof and another 20 on the ramparts, none of which survive. The two that remain in the fort today came from a Russian ship and were placed there by the Germans at a later date. Today, inside the western rampart there is an exhibition area that houses many artefacts from the early Christian, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman periods of the city, starting from the 5th century AD.

In addition to its exhibits, the castle also offers stunning panoramic views . Stand on the eastern rampart, admire the view of the city and try to imagine what it might have looked like before the fall of the medieval walls. The best way to get up to the fort is to follow the path around the fort . It’s a beautiful walk of 600 metres in total, through pine trees, prickly pears and flowers, quite passable and with breathtaking views .

The fortress can be visited daily from 08.00 a.m. to 15.00 p.m., except Mondays, and entrance is free of charge.

Take a walk in Chalkida’s oldest neighbourhood

The heart of the old city still beats behind the Athanaton square, located just opposite the old bridge. It is a small district that used to be within the walls. The castle district , as they call it, managed to escape the modernization of the city. Thus, today it still exudes something of Chalkida’s old charm and long history. Explore the small alleys , admire the traditional two-storey houses with their cornices and iron balconies, many of which are unfortunately in decay today.

The remarkable thing is that in this tiny neighbourhood the places of worship of three different religions managed to coexist peacefully during the Ottoman period. The Church of Agia Paraskevi, the Jewish synagogue and the Emir Zade Mosque still stand just a block from each other to this day.

The Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi , which is a historical monument, dates back to the 5th century AD and was traditionally founded on the ruins of an ancient Greek temple, as evidenced by the columns and pillars of the church which bear Ionic and Corinthian capitals . Directly opposite the church of Agia Paraskevi is the house of Vailos , Chalkida’s Venetian governor, who was gruesomely sawed to death by the Ottomans when they occupied the city. It is a rare architectural example that combines Venetian and Ottoman architecture and is well worth a visit.

The mosque of Emir Zade, just a few metres from Agia Paraskevi: Angeliki Kouroutzi

The synagogue of Chalkida is one of the oldest in Greece, while its Jewish community is the only one in Europe that has lived continuously for 2,500 years in the same city. The synagogue has been destroyed six times over the years, but each time it was rebuilt in the exact same spot. That is why the exact date of the first one’s construction remains unknown. A stone’s throw away, in the Fallen Soldiers’ Square, stands the Emir Zade mosque , which now serves as an exhibition hall. Built in the 15th century by the Turks, the mosque is in very good condition, although the minaret has been removed.

Agia Paraskevi is a parish church and is operating normally. It is open daily from 07.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. and from 17.00 to 19.00 p.m.

The house of Vailos is open every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm and admission is free.

The Emir Zade mosque hosts the amazing collection of engravings by Ioannis Karakostas and is open every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. with free admission.

Chalkida town Evia Karababa Castle

  • Upon your arrival, hike up to Karababa fortress , to take Chalkis’ best panoramic shots. There is a free-entry museum, which holds sculptures from ecclesiastical, secular, and funerary monuments, that date from the first Christian times to the 19th century. The fortress is situated approximately 500 meters uphill by Chalkida train station. When you reach the top of the hill, you will get a bird-eye view of the city of Chalkida!
  • Near the fortress sits Xenia urban food cocktail cafe, where you may have a delicious brunch, take your coffee or enjoy a tasty lunch. The area of the cafe is superb, the prices are affordable, and the service is good too.

chalkida Greece sea view

Chalkida has two beautiful bridges. The Euripus High Bridge (commonly referred to as New Chalkida Bridge) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Euripus strait in Evia, which sits near Chalkida.

One of the best things to do when you visit the city of Chalkida is to take a stroll along Chalkida Old Bridge , walk by the cozy cafes and cool bars and look at the stunning sea views. The 2,500-year-old Chalkida Bridge on the Euripus strait is the most vibrant and well-known meeting point of the city of Chalkida. The Euripus Tide is a unique phenomenon, due to the tidal forces that are observed in the Euripus Strait. The best time to walk on the Chalkida promenade is during the evening to admire the colors of the sea and the sunset.

Avanton Street

Avanton street is the most commercial street of Chalkida, where are based well-known brands and famous shop branches. Most of the amenities, such as museums, restaurants, and shopping are in proximity to the city. It is convenient to do your shopping, and on a 10-minute foot walk, visit a cozy cafe or fish restaurant.

Red House of Maliou family Chalkida

The Red House of the Malliou family is the most spacious mansion of Chalkida of the previous century, the mansion of the family of merchants Ioannis and Dimitrios Malliou. The house sits in a stunning spot at the edge of the beach of Chalkida. It’s a short walk from the city and is worth visiting when an exhibition takes place. It is also close to Chalkida city center and near to many eateries. The unique architectural mansion sits near the beach. After you visit to the Red House, head down the stairs to enjoy a coffee in Stavento, a must-visit cocktail bar, which offers magnificent sea views.

Archaeological Museum of Chalkida

A must-do activity on a day trip in Chalkida, Greece is a visit to the Archaeological Museum. The Archaeological Museum of Chalkida is located in a building, which dates from the 20th century. It is the oldest and most well-known Museum in the city of Chalkida. It collects finds from all over Evia. The exhibits of the Museum are arranged chronologically from the Paleolithic to the Late Roman Era and come from excavations in Evia.

Archaeological Museum of Chalkida – Arethousa

The New Archaeological Museum of Chalkida, “Arethousa ” stands out for its well-organized premises. The museum is housed in a restored factory setting. In the thematic exhibition of the new museum, exhibits of the state organization, economy, cultural identities, and worship are presented, as model exhibitions from the prefecture of Evia and Skyros. The rich series of exhibitions, and the history the museum displays need longer than an hour to explore in depth.

12 Top Things to do in Chalkida, Greece

Dimitrios Fanourios Pischinas Filed Under: Evia Island Travel Blog 1 Comment

Chalkida (or Chalkis) is the capital city of Evia: Greece’s second-largest island. With about 60,000 inhabitants, it comprises nearly a third of the prefecture’s population. It is located on the spot where Evia reaches the closest to the mainland, hence hosting both the connecting bridges and serving as the gateway to the entire island.

Chalkida is far from a popular tourist destination. Even keener-than-the-average travelers who go off the beaten path to explore Evia’s wild beauty tend to omit it, passing through it briefly on their way to the island’s interior. In my opinion, they miss out.

Chalkida happens to be my own beloved hometown, which, after having traveled to about half of the world’s countries, I still regard as my favorite place on Earth. And that’s why I wrote this article: to persuade you, traveler of Greece, to give this charming city its due attention.

Whether you intend to discover Evia broadly or simply seek a brief escapade from the hustle and bustle of Athens, Chalkida city makes for a superb and unique destination. And if you decide to visit, the following are some nice ideas for how to spend your time there pleasantly.

Watch the “crazy waters” shift and the Old Bridge open at Euripus Strait

The Old Bridge of Chalkida spanning the Euripus Strait

The one thing Chalkida is world-famous for is the peculiar tidal currents that flow interchangeably north-to-south and south-to-north through the Euripus Strait between the island and the mainland. It is this phenomenon that has given the city the nickname crazy waters .

Reversing tidal currents are caused by the moon’s gravity and occur in all straits worldwide, but they are mostly imperceptible by the human senses. It is the distinct geography of Chalkida’s strait—its double-funnel shape among other factors—that make the local currents particularly strong.

The flow peaks at an astounding speed of 12 km per hour, which, for context, is comparable to torrents during floods. For most of the month, the current changes direction about every six hours with a clock’s regularity. But for a few days around the half-moons, it loses its pattern altogether, moving back and forth in chaotic ways.

The 38-meters-wide strait is spanned by an 8-meter-tall bridge, which, constructed in 1963, is the latest of a long succession of bridges dating back to antiquity. The bridge is withdrawn usually once every evening to allow for large vessels to traverse the strait. Given the powerful stream with its notorious vortexes, it requires skillful maneuvering to sail through. It is quite an impressive spectacle to behold. Due to the unpredictability of the currents, the bridge’s opening times are not standard. Estimations are stated on a screen on the spot and live views of the bridge can be seen here .

If you’re now thinking that it’d be great fun to jump from the bridge, you are totally right. But it is unfortunately illegal. However, this detail wouldn’t stop us when we were kids… Free-falling for a short distance, we’d then be engulfed and drifted around by the currents, losing every sense of direction within this dark whirlpool of pressing liquid, for up to half a minute. By the time we’d reach the surface, we could be more than 50 meters away from the bridge, laughing and waving at the coastguards who were always a little too late to stop us.

Stroll along the lively promenades

The promenade of Chalkida at night

Starting from the bridge, a broad pedestrian road runs along the coast for nearly 1 km, which constitutes Chalkida’s main social hub. On summer weekends, when Athenian day-trippers in addition to the locals flood it, the promenade may be crammed with people to the point of congestion. Its entire length is clustered with consecutive fancy cafes, bars, restaurants, fast food places, and dessert shops whose literally hundreds of tables are constantly occupied by vivid companies. In the narrow bystreets, you find plenty of more (less fancy and expensive), quirky bars and traditional seafood taverns.

A bit further up, behind the church of Saint Nicolaos, there is another pedestrian street called Avanton (which was Homer’s name for Evia’s inhabitants). That is Chalkida’s principal shopping street, featuring a steady flow of folks, buskers, and cute cafeterias.

Marvel at the impressive New Bridge

The New Bridge of Chalkida drone photo

When, at the end of the 20th century, Evia’s logistical needs exceeded the Old Bridge’s capacity, a vitalizing project was undertaken to construct a new, larger bridge to further link the island to the mainland. Its construction was completed in 1993, spanning the second-narrowest stretch of the strait, about a km south of the small bridge.

With a length of nearly 700 meters and a height of 35 meters, it remained Greece’s largest cable bridge until it got surpassed by the bridge of Rio-Antirrio. In combination with the beautiful surrounding landscape and the gigantic, now-abandoned cement factory that lies below, it composes an alluring, picture-worthy scenery.

You may walk across it, along the pedestrian lanes on either side of its deck, or go under it. To do that, just follow the coast south from the Old Bridge for some 3 km. The last part of the walk will take you along a lovely path squeezed between the rocky coast and a lovely pine forest.

Swim and sunbathe at the numerous beaches

Papathanasiou Beach chalkida evia island

With more than three-quarters of its periphery bordered by the sea, Chalkida has literally tens of different beaches within the city itself. You may choose among several smaller, out-of-the-way ones for some more-or-less private beach time. Or you may prefer one of the more popular beaches to enjoy a drink on a shaded deck chair and perhaps socialize with other bathers. Chalkida has four beaches with food-and-drink serving facilities:

  • Asteria , situated right across the main promenade on the mainland side (coordinates: 38.5663, 23.5881); the most popular and sumptuous one.
  • Kourenti , along the coast north of the center (coordinates: 38.4716, 23.6024); a mostly family-oriented beach with a seasonal canteen serving drinks and nice food.
  • Papathanasiou , further along the coast from the previous one, right east of the lighthouse (coordinates: 38.4743, 23.6057); my personal favorite one, as it is my neighborhood, where some friends of mine maintain the coolest catering establishment in the city that you should definitely check out.
  • Sykies , adjacent to the previous one (coordinates: 38.4731, 23.6079); a nice quiet beach with a small cafe up on the road bringing a few tables and deck chairs to the strand, good for children, having an open basketball court and a playground.

Although not technically in Chalkida, 10 km away, near Drosia village, lies the beach of Alykes. This is a long, sandy one with crystal-clear waters and extensive installations where many Chalkideans and Athenians flock on the weekends.

It is also worth paying a visit to Liani Ammos beach, by the northern part of the city proper. As it is very shallow and located beside the main road, it’s not good for swimming. But its broad sandy shoal is frequented by various peculiar birds and interesting to see.

Hike up to the Karababa Castle

Karababa Castle overlooking Chalkida

Atop the hill across the Old Bridge, stands an old fortification by the name of Karababa Castle. It was built in 1684, during the Ottoman Era. Only its six-meter-tall wall survives in the present day. It encloses an area of roughly 10 km² wherein you find a chapel, a few abandoned cannons, and a small exhibition. You can climb up to the wall or walk the path around it to wonder at some pretty stunning views of Chalkida and the embracing Euboic Gulf.

Visit the historic mosque and walk the narrow streets of the Turkish old town

Emir Zade Mosque chalkida greece

Chalkida was under the control of the Ottoman Empire from 1470 until the last Turkish forces finally departed in 1833, three years after the official foundation of the modern Greek state. The most salient trace of its Turkish past is the Emir Zade Mosque: an elegant structure built sometime in the late 15th century. It is situated a few minutes’ walk from the Old Bridge and is surrounded by a complex of narrow, cobbled streets where you can see samples of residential Ottoman architecture.

Check out the Red House: Chalkida’s most famous building

The Red House of Chalkida evia greece

The Red House of Chalkida, so dubbed for an obvious reason, is the city’s most iconic and renowned building. It stands atop a bluff by the northern edge of the promenade and overlooks the sea on three sides.

It was constructed in 1884 in the place of an older Turkish hookah lounge and originally functioned as the private estate of wealthy merchant Vasilios Mallios. It has ever since been employed for various purposes, most notable of which were hosting the exiled King Peter I of Serbia during his kingdom’s occupation by the Central Powers in WWI and housing the Nazi administration during the island’s occupation in WW2. Nowadays, it serves as the headquarters of an educational organization. Unfortunately, the public cannot access its interior save for special occasions like exhibitions.

See the Bad Head Lighthouse and stroll in the surrounding pine forest

The Bad Head Lighthouse chalkida evia greece

If you take a look at the map of Chalkida, you cannot miss the elongated promontory that sticks out off its northern side. That is called the bad head promontory and on the tip of it stands a picturesque lighthouse overlooking the Northern Euboic Gulf. The rest of the little peninsula is a public park, covered by a graceful pine forest, paths, and viewpoints. When the tide is low, you can also walk around the peninsula, reach below the lighthouse, and enjoy a panoramic view of the gulf and the encompassing mountains.

Visit the Archeological Museums

The new Archeological Museum of Chalkida arethousa factory

Chalkida has two archeological museums, exhibiting quite an interesting collection of artifacts from antiquity. The old one is located in the city center (coordinates: 38.4629, 23.5940). The new one is housed in a neat, recently-renovated 19th-century factory beside the city’s bus terminal (coordinates: 38.4578, 23.6102).

Check out the medieval church of Saint Paraskevi

This is the oldest church in Chalkida. Parts of it date back to as early as the 5th century AD. Most of the current structure was erected during the period of the Francocracy, between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its facade was reconstructed after collapsing from an earthquake in the mid-19th century. The church is surrounded by a nice park, and a few hidden traditional taverns can be found in the adjacent bystreets.

Take a trip to the nearby medieval Castle of Fylla

Fylla Castle near chalkida evia greece

Although not technically located in Chalkida, if you stay here for some time you shouldn’t omit to visit the medieval castle in the nearby village of Fylla. It is a mere 10 km away from the city center, which means you can easily reach it by cycling or even jogging. Dating to the 13th century, it is built atop a conspicuous rock overlooking Chalkida and all its surrounding area. It is characterized by the word ΟΧΙ ( no in Greek)—which was the symbol of the Greek Resistance against the Nazi occupation—that still today remains prominently written on the castle’s city-facing wall since that time.

Rent a car and further explore the majestic beauty of Evia Island

Mountainous beauty of Evia island

The city of Chalkida is a very fine place to spend a few days. But ultimately, your primary reason to visit it ought to be to broadly discover the fascinating beauty of Evia. From its high mountains to its paradisal beaches and historic towns, this enormous island offers virtually unlimited possibilities for exploration.

Sadly, public transport on Evia is scarce and can only help you to scratch the surface of the island’s secluded beauty. Your best go for properly traveling around the region would be to rent a car. Although a couple of car rental agencies exist in Chalkida, you’d be much better off to rent from Athens where choice is greater and hence prices lower. Rentalcars is a site I personally use often to conveniently search across different providers.

How to get to Chalkida from Athens

Chalkida is a bit less than 80 km away from Athens and you can reach it in just about an hour by either driving or public transport.

If you drive yourself, take the E75 motorway, direction Lamia, and follow the signs to Chalkida once you see them. Keep in mind that—very frustratingly so—you will have to pay €4.20 on tolls each way.

Many buses and trains travel from Athens to Chalkida regularly. Buses are slightly more expensive than trains but a bit quicker and more reliable.

Buses depart every 30 to 60 minutes from Liossion Bus Terminal . A one-way ticket costs €7 and a return ticket is discounted to €12.50.

Trains depart approximately every hour from Larissa Station . The ticket costs €6.50.

For more details and alternative ways to reach Evia by ferries, check out this post: How to get to Evia Island (Euboea) in Greece

Despite its relative popularity among Athenians, Chalkida couldn’t be said to offer a profusion of accommodation options. There are but a handful of hotels in the city. The oldest and best-known ones, that overlook the promenade and the Old Bridge, are:

Daytrip: chalkida (evia) with kids.

Chalkida's waterside promenade

The nondescript capital of Evia is hardly an obvious destination for tourists and Athenians alike, but holds a special appeal for families. It’s also just an hour’s drive from Athens.

Last updated 31 Dec 2023

Chalkida is the entrypoint to Evia , connecting the long island slip to the mainland at its center. It’s also just an hour’s drive from Athens. With its ease of access, why isn’t it more popular than it is?

Without the obviously breathtaking to draw souvenir-seeking crowds to these parts, it’s easily overlooked. And while it may not be the first place I’d suggest for a first visit to Greece, it’s a good day trip destination if you’re spending some time in Athens , or stopping over on a longer summer itinerary (travel further north to Mandoudi port and summer ferries will take you to the Sporades ).

Here are five things we always do with the kids in Chalkida:

WATERSIDE PROMENADE WALKS

Built along the Evian Gulf, the city’s waterside promenade is perfect for slow family strolls and kiddie scoots. Start from the iconic 19th century Red House on the northern end, where an assembly of cafes boasting elevated sea views sit beside wide open spaces where giggling children scoot and play tag.

The walk towards the old bridge is lined with trendy cafes and touristy taverns advertising moussaka on stand-up banners at the entrance. The better restaurants, however, are found past the old bridge where it gets quieter on the waterfront. Euvous presents well-executed modern dining that’s big on meats, and an even more impressive appetiser menu. A few doors down, Tsafaki ouzerie is popular for seafood and a taste of the island’s specialty shellfish.

Evous Restaurant in Chalkida

The old drawbridge connects the mainland to the island at the strait’s narrowest point. Linger long enough and you might notice the “crazy waters” that confounded Aristotle with water currents that change directions eight times a day.

Past the bridge, a ten minute walk down, is outdoor beach bar and restaurant Asteria . Here, the young and svelte gather for cocktails and club beats, alongside families that hover around a fenced playground. This is a space for everyone.

THE MINI FUN PARK

Close to the city square is a mini fun park that’s just the right size – not too large so adults are not hounded into spending hours, but with a handful of attractions for a brief fill of fun. A mini bumper car ring and eighties-era amusement park aside, trampolines by the sea are perfectly positioned for a sunset bounce.

A mini fun park by the water in Chalkida City

BISKOTOGLYCO  SWEET BOUTIQUE

By the Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi in the city’s main square (Avantes) is a small heaven of dessert, both traditional and updated. A medley of textures and luscious flavours are the stuff of cake dreams. But it’s the velvety soft serve and artisanal ice cream the girls are jumping for every visit. From this central spot, you’re not far the city’s main pedestrian-only shopping street (Avanton). Put a google pin on Zara and you’ll find where the shopping action surrounds. A restaurant worth mentioning in the vicinity is Piato . Set in soothing Scandanavian styled interiors, a luscious repertoire of modern-Greek flavours stream out from the kitchen. Or just a very tasty burger if that’s more up your kid’s alley.

ALYKES – ROCK POOLS, BEACH BARS & BOUNCY CASTLES

Better than most beaches in Athens, and with less of its crowds (although you will still be hard-pressed for loungers on a summer weekend), Alykes was a frequent escape for a summer splash when we lived in the big city. Its fine, fair coloured sand and turquoise waters are unusual for dark and wild volcanic Evia. An attractive respite for families, a family-friendly line of beach bars line its shores, many with a formidable set-up of bouncy castles and playground equipment.

Daluz beach bar in Alykes, Chalkida

Daluz is our favourite in a quieter corner at the far end, with a shallow seabed that stretches for a distance, and decent-for-a-beach-bar fare they can serve to your beach lounger. Alternatively, kick-back on grassy lawns of Ippokampus under the lush shade of mulberry and fig trees.

Between stretches of sandy shoreline at Alykes are rocky outcrops that only became interesting once we had kids. Easy-access rock pools teem with sea life waiting to be discovered. Endless are the hours they spend watching shrimp and baby fish scuttle up and down flooded cracks, collecting and releasing tiny hermit crabs, and dislodging rocks in search of crabs and slithering baby starfish.

SEASIDE SEAFOOD DINING

Seafood is a highlight in Greece. And in Evia, there’s more to get excited about. Home to varieties of shellfish only available in these parts, Greeks come to Chalkida to feast on exotic, fresh-caught delicacies. Paleologos is a seaside tavern that keeps us eating till no end, in part because the kids have found a good time running in circles in the little garden behind.

Palaiologos Taverna Chalkida

In it’s largeness, Evia doesnt quite feel like an island. But twenty minutes out from Chalkida’s city is Nea Artaki with a distinct island vibe, and more seafood taverns to choose from.

  • Chalkida on Evia

The capital of Evia is Chalkida, or Chalkis, the industrial port which you drive into if crossing from the Greek the mainland over the Evripos Channel, which here is at its narrowest point, a mere 40m (131ft) across.

Chalkida on Evia

The channel is renowned for having inexplicable currents, and it is still not known how they can sometimes change direction over a dozen times a day, and sometimes only once. A legend says that Aristotle was so frustrated at his inability to understand the phenomenon that he threw himself into the waters and died. He did actually die in Chalkida, but whether in this fashion is another matter.

Bridge to the Mainland

The Bridge Linking Evia to the Greek Mainland

The channel has been bridged since 411BC (the present one only dates from the 1960s), and initially the town was one of the independent Greek city-states until it was conquered by Athens in 506BC. Like the rest of the island it was later subject to rule by a range of peoples: Macedonian, Turkish, Franks, Venetian.

The name of the town is thought to derive from the Greek word for copper, chalkos , as this mineral was one of the island’s early major sources of wealth. An indication of the power that the town once had is that it controlled and gave its name to the Halkidiki peninsula (also spelt Chalkidiki in Greek) and it had several Italian colonies too.

For many years the town of Chalkida vied with Eretria for control of the island and especially the fertile Lelantine Plain which feeds much of the island, but it was not until the 7th century B.C. that Chalkida finally proved its superiority and developed as Evia’s capital.

The Chalkida Waterfront

Today, although at first sight not immediately attractive to the visitor, Chalkida is worth a day or two of your time, for its museums, old town, and waterfront areas. The main waterfront area is to the left as you cross the bridge, where you will find restaurants, cafes, ouzeries, and hotels. It makes a good place to sit over a coffee or a full meal, gazing out over the channel back to the mainland.

The fish restaurants are so highly-rated that it is said Athenians will drive out for the evening in order to eat here, a distance of 88km (55 miles). Here too is the market, where you can see the island produce brought in by the farmers. It's busy most days but on Saturday in particular, and Saturday morning is the worst time of the week to consider driving through Chalkida or across the bridge with the mainland.

If you head for the quarter known as Kastro, heading inland and to the right, away from the bridge, you will find much quieter streets and many old houses that testify to the Turkish and Venetian legacy of the town. An unusual element in this is a community of Muslims from Thrace, much further east, bringing a touch of the Orient, added to by a lovely 15th-century mosque, a Turkish aqueduct and the remains of the 17th-century fortress itself. The aqueduct used to bring water to Chalkida from springs on Mt Dirfys some 25km (16 miles) to the northeast.

Our Pick of the Guides to Greece

Rough-Guide-Greece-2022.png

Agia Paraskevi

The Christian element is in the form of the rather bizarre and imposing church of Agia Paraskevi. This vast building was built in the 13th century, but in the 14th century the exterior was converted by the Crusaders into a Gothic cathedral, while inside it is a mixture of all of the island’s historical influences. Note the ornate wooden pulpit and the wooden ceiling.

A two-minute walk from Agia Paraskevi is the Cultural Museum, which has the usual collection of folk costumes and rural artifacts, but better is the town’s Archaeological Museum . This is back in the modern part of Chalkida and has some of the excellent finds from Ancient Eretria, as well as from some of the island’s lesser-known sites, like Karystos. Neither museum is among the best in the country, but they are worth visiting if you plan to have more than just a brief visit to Evia.
