Culture shock rating.

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

This is grassroots travel at its most interesting

Traveler Reviews

This city tour hop on off bus had a good speaker audio system in English so you didn't need the hard plastic ear pieces to hear the tour info. We didn't realize that there are three different hop on off tours in Edinbourgh. We booked the city tour in advance only to find it didn't go to our cruise port. For 4 pounds more each, we were able to add another hop on off bus that connected us. It was raining so with only half of the top of the bus was covered, many people were on the lower level. One bus passed me without stopping. I guess they were full. Otherwise, the tour was typical.

A good tour to get a feel for Newcastle. Details are not well publicised at the website. Tours start half-hourly from Bewick Street near Central Station from 1030, and a circuit take 55 minutes. Last tour is at 1500. There are 17 stops. Tours run 7 days a week. Seniors fares were listed as unavailable at the Viator website, so we paid 8 pounds each online through Viator for our one-day Adult tickets. Had we paid at the bus it would have been only 6 pounds each for Seniors tickets. The driver said there is never a problem with seating availability. Good commentary, but only available in English.

Complete bust as I purchased the ticket but the hop on hop off was not running that day due to the Great North race. They should have known that when I booked as it is the biggest half marathon in the world.

Waited for an hour to get on. First bus was full. Second bus had no audio downstairs in bus. We were afraid to hop off as we might not be able to get back on the next one.

Brilliant way to see the sights. Beware that the last departure in Summer is around 2.45pm.

This is a good option to see the must important attractions. Takes between 20 to 30 minutes for the bus to pass by. The only downside is that the bus didn and #39;t have the option for headphones so that makes difficult to hear the explanation. That and #39;s why I give 4 start

We were so pleasantly surprised by how much we liked this city. We walked over the tilting bridge and got to see the tilting bridge in action. Amazing. The hop on/hop off bus was a great way to get an overview of what and #39;s out there. The people are so nice!!

Unfortunately, we were not able to use the vouchers. Reading the tour times from 1030 until three, that was followed by the terms that the voucher was good for 24 hours. I misunderstood and thought that the last tour started at three. However when we try to catch the tour bus at three the driver said they were done for the day. It is unfortunate we did not get to use the Boucher's so I can give no review. Because a review rating is required for me to submit this, I will give it one star but it is not actually an accurate reading

We have used Hop-on Hop-off buses in several European cities as a quick way to get orientated and see sites that you probably would not have bothered with otherwise. There was a stop a short walk from our hotel and easy enough to find. A bus arrived within a minute of the displayed time. The driver was able to quickly check our vouchers then hand us our tickets and maps. The view from the top deck was fine as we were near the front sheltered from any wind. The commentary was informative but I was surprised that no earphones were offered for alternative languages. Newcastle and Gateshead have some quite steep streets so the bus trip proved its worth in taking the strain. We stayed on the bus for the whole tour and did not do the hop-off, hop-on bit as anything we wanted to view proved to be within our walking range. The tour was value for money and we were satisfied that it fulfilled our wishes.

The tour was nice and commentary in English very clear. The stop at the Royal Mile was a bit crowded. The staff we very helpful.

City Sightseeing Newcastle - Hop on Hop off

newcastle bus tours

Discover all the great things to do and see in Newcastle Gateshead with City Sightseeing!

Take a journey around the city and enjoy the view from the top of an open top double-decker bus. Hop off at the Centre for Life to experience the largest planetarium in the North! This award-winning science centre is full of exciting exhibitions, activities and events for all ages.

Learn all about life on Tyneside at the Discovery Museum, from the region's shipbuilding heritage to inventions which changed the world. Visit Blackfriars Monastery, a restored 13th-century friary. Only the cloister buildings remain, which now house a range of craft workshops, a restaurant and an exhibition portraying the history of Blackfriars. Hop off at St Mary’s Cathedral, a gothic revival church built in 1844 designed by Augustus Welby Pugin, who worked on the Houses of Parliament. Admire the architecture, the many stained glass windows and the building’s five pipe organs. Discover the spellbinding history of Newcastle’s Castle Keep and Black Gate, built by Henry II in the twelfth century. The Grade 1 listed building is a heritage visitor attraction open to all.

Let City Sightseeing introduce you to Newcastle-upon-Tyne’s rich history as you take a bus tour of the city. Newcastle’s Town Walls are protected by their Scheduled Ancient Monument classification. This medieval defensive wall was built during the 13th and 14th centuries to help protect the town from attack. Large amounts of the wall were demolished during the 18th and 19th centuries but some still remain, particularly on the western side of the city. The Great North Museum incorporates collections from the Hancock Museum and Newcastle University’s Museum of Antiquities, the Shefton Museum and the Hatton Gallery. See major displays showing the wonder of the animal kingdom, Ancient Egyptian mummies and a life-size T-Rex skeleton. Explore interactive exhibitions incorporating touch screen technology and an interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall. Admire the artworks in the Laing Art Gallery, home to an impressive collection of art and sculpture. The exhibition programme is renowned for bringing the biggest names in historic, modern and contemporary art to the North East. Baltic Square is home to The Centre for Contemporary Art where you will also find Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the world's first and only tilting bridge! The bridge not only serves a practical purpose as the River Tyne's only foot and cycle bridge, but its elegance and fine engineering make it one of the city’s main attractions.

See the latest blockbuster, spend time in the casino or kick back and relax in one of the many restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars and at the city’s entertainment complex, The Gate. For more restaurants and bars visit China Town, Market Street and Mosley Street. For shopping opportunities, hop off at Grainger Market, Northumberland Street, Eldon Square Shopping Centre or Monument Mall Shopping Centre. Football fans will be in their element when they hop off at St. James’ Park for Newcastle United Football Club, Shearer’s Bar, Stadium Tours, and Leazes Park. Take the bus tour to Quayside which has it all including the Historic Quayside Area and Bessie Surtees House, a rare example of 18th century domestic architecture. The magnificent Sage Gateshead Music Centre is the venue to head for of you look for a range of musical performances. The Quayside is also home to Newcastle’s vibrant nightlife including a range of restaurants, more than thirty pubs and a choice of clubs.

newcastle bus tours

Hello and Welcome to 2024 Hello and Welcome to 2024

We have tried to offer many new destinations for 2024 as well as tried-and-true favorites.  We were able to send two buses to our beachfront trip to Myrtle Beach in August of 2023, and the first bus for the coming year is almost full, so if you are thinking of that one, please call to get your name on the list.  Both the Mystery Day Trip and the Overnight were full, with waiting lists, so, again, get in early for those.  Our overnight was to the Poconos last year and was successful and will be offered in the brochure.  The day trip was to Bucyrus, Ohio for some flower arranging and much more so look for that one as well.

Well, folks, it looks as though we are back!!!  This year was back to pre-pandemic levels, although the travel landscape has changed! Many dining and gaming venues that actively pursued our business in the past have stopped welcoming groups.  Also, we have seen many venues that did not survive the pandemic, and, of course, we are all familiar with the problem of getting good people to work.  Despite the challenges, however, we were able to provide numerous opportunities for delightful travel experiences.  As is expected, you will see prices going up, although we strive to keep things as affordable as possible. Thanks to your continuing trust in us and we hope to see you on the bus in 2024!!

We strongly suggest that you purchase cancellation protection, to cover you up until departure day and boarding will be refused if you have symptoms. If you have a nagging cough, we ask that you mask on board. Please note the following policy changes; overnight tour balances are now due in full 45 days prior to departure and overnight cancellation protection will be $12 per day and due no later than 45 days prior to departure. Free cancellations for overnight tours are due 45 days prior to departure. All day trip policies have stayed the same.

CASTLES, GARDENS & FILM LOCATIONS

The North East is home to more castles & fortified buildings than any other region in England. Explore medieval strongholds such as Barnard Castle or Raby Castle, discover Pele towers built during the times of the Border Reivers or experience romantic ruins such as Dunstanburgh or Tynemouth Castle.

Our gardens are hidden wonders… From the highly contemporary at The Alnwick Garden to the ultimate luxury (in Victorian times) at Cragside Estate. Find your favourite in hidden corners such as Lindisfarne, Durham or along Hadrian’s Wall…

And then there are great locations seen in movies & TV! Discover the coastal might of Bamburgh Castle, used in part of the Transformers franchise or immerse yourself in history, intrigue & magic at Alnwick Castle, home to a famous wizard and also the set for Brancaster Castle in Downton Abbey (plus home to the Percy family of Alnwick!) . Take a look at our half-day Alnwick Castle tour.

There is so much to be discovered – our guided tours of Newcastle & North East England will take you to the highlights but will always find time for the hidden secrets… Take a look at one of our regions in more depth, such as Northumberland and the tours we offer that include grand castles, magnificent gardens & blockbuster locations!

EXPERIENCE THE WILD SIDE

Whether you are in the wild landscapes of the Durham Dales or Northumberland National Park, you can easily spot black grouse, falcons, adders or lizards.

Bird enthusiasts will fall in love during a tour of our very own Galapagos Islands, the Farne Islands – 50,000 puffins, 20,000 guillemots and countless others… The mudflats along the coast are great places to spot migrating wading birds and wild fowl such as pale-bellied Brent geese or peregrines during the autumn and winter seasons.

Along the Northumberland coast you’ll come across several colonies of seals, orcas, smaller whales & porpoise…

On a tour of Kielder Forest & Reservoir you’ll discover the homes of the endangered native red squirrel, roe deer, otters, bats or ospreys. You’ll also find the largest salmon hatchery in England and Wales.
