Charley Hull holds on for 1-shot victory in Texas, first LPGA Tour win in nearly six years

THE COLONY, Texas -- Charley Hull put a little extra time into putting practice, and it paid off for her in a big way Sunday when she ran off four birdies on the back nine for a 7-under 64 to win The Ascendant LPGA.

Hull won for the first time on the LPGA Tour in nearly six years, and the 26-year-old from England crossed the $1 million mark in season earnings.

She loved the theater of the final hour at Old American Golf Club as much as soaking herself with champagne when she held on for a 1-shot victory.

"I found it exciting," Hull said. "When Janet made eagle on 17, I enjoyed that. It made me want to birdie the last. It was great fun."

Janet is the nickname for Xiyu Lin of China, and she roared into the mix with a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-3 16th and then a 35-foot eagle putt at the par-5 17th. That gave Lin a share of the lead, but only momentarily.

Hull hit a lob wedge from 78 yards to 4 feet on the 17th and made that for her final birdie, taking a 1-shot lead to the final hole.

The pin on the 18th was all the way back, with a huge slope just left of the green. Hull went at the flag, tugged it a little and watched it stay on the collar left of the flag. Lin, who closed with a 65, put her approach on the green, just inside Hull's.

Lin's birdie putt to force a playoff lost speed and missed just to the left. It was her third runner-up finish this year, and second in the past month. She wiped away tears when it was over.

"It's funny, my coach and I had a joke, trying to see how high of a world ranking I can get without a win. I mean, it's not fun, but it's fun," Lin said. "Any other week, I mean there is 140 players out there and I came up second. It sucks, but at the other side, it's good."

Lydia Ko also was in the mix and was tied for the lead until missing a couple of birdie chances from inside 10 feet. She shot 65 and finished third, which moved Ko to the top of the Race to CME Globe standings.

No one could keep up with Hull. She began her run with a wedge to 5 feet for birdie on No. 12, and then hit a superb pitch from behind the green on the par-5 13th to 2 feet. She watched anxiously as her approach to the 14th was in the air, and it settled 12 feet away for yet another birdie.

Hull was so dialed in that she had chances on the next two holes from inside 10 feet and narrowly missed them. But she stayed ahead all the way to the end.

"I've put in some good work this year," said Hull, who now has two LPGA wins to go with three titles on the Ladies European Tour. "I told my coach a few weeks ago, 'This is what we need to work on to get in the winner's circle.'

"I could have made some more birdies," she said. "Hit good putts and just rolled over the edge. I feel very proud of myself."

Atthaya Thitikul, the 19-year-old from Thailand who won last week in Arkansas, needed a win to reach No. 1 in the women's world ranking. She shot 67 and finished alone in fourth, moving to No. 2 ahead of Nelly Korda.

Chevron Championsip: Charley Hull, Lottie Woad and Leona Maguire among British and Irish hopes

England's Charley Hull, Georgia Hall, Jodi Ewart Shadoff and Lottie Woad among 132-strong field; Scotland's Gemma Dryburgh, Northern Ireland's Stephanie Meadow and Ireland's Leona Maguire also feature; watch live on Sky Sports Golf from 3pm, Thursday

Fresh off the back of Scottie Scheffler's win at Augusta National last week, we're now all set for the first women's major of the year with the Chevron Championship in Texas this week.

World No 1 Nelly Korda is chasing fifth-straight win to continue her remarkable 2024, while defending champion Lilia Vu is hoping to add to the two major titles she secured last year.

Vu overcame Angel Yin in a playoff 12 months ago, while fellow major winners in 2023, Allisen Corpuz, China's Ruoning Yin and Celine Boutier figure to again be in the mix come Sunday.

Well, here you go Charley… The first major championship of 2024, go take it!

Georgia Hall

The only member of this field to have already tasted success at a major championship, with Hall's win coming on home soil at the Women's British Open in 2018.

The 27-year-old has struggled to turn that triumph into consistent final-day challenges at major championships since, with just three top-10 finishes across the five tournaments in the five years that have followed.

2023 in particular appeared to promise so much when, heading into last year's Chevron Championship, Hall bagged herself two second-placed finishes on the LPGA Tour.

That form has since deserted her, however, with only one top-10 placing on the tour since and a fifth-placed finish on the Amraco Team Series in London last summer her best showing on the Ladies European Tour. Is this the week when she turns things around?

Lottie Woad

The only amateur among the British contingent, with the English 20-year-old earning her spot in stunning style by becoming the first European to win the Augusta National Women's Amateur in early April.

Anwa highlights

Woad, a student at Florida State University and huge Leeds United fan, birdied her final two holes, and three of her last four, to finish one stroke ahead of American Bailey Shoemaker in the final round - though a 2-1 defeat for her beloved Leeds United to Coventry City "ruined my day a little bit", she joked following her stunning victory.

Woad's victory at Augusta comes one on from Rose Zhang's, who has since won on her professional debut, recorded three top-10 finishes in majors and featured for Team USA in the Solheim Cup last September.

Lottie Woad win reaction

Woad told Sky Sports that "there is no rush" for her to follow in Zhang's footsteps and turn pro, though a strong showing at the first major of 2024 - with appearances to follow at the Women's British Open and US Women's Open - will only see calls for her to do so grow louder.

Jodi Ewart Shadoff

The English 36-year-old played in her maiden major championship way back when in 2012, going on to card impressive top-10 finishes at both the Chevron Championship and US Women's Open the following year.

Her career-best return came when finishing runner-up by two strokes to In-Kyung Kim at the 2017 Women's British Open but, despite being a regular challenger on tour and a three-time Solheim Cup selection, a first LPGA Tour success eluded her until two years ago at the Mediheal Championship.

A somewhat surprising omission from Europe's victorious Solheim squad last year, Ewart Shadoff will be extra keen not to miss out on their defence Stateside later this year… Currently ranked 69th in the world, a strong showing at the majors, starting this week, will certainly aid her cause.

Leona Maguire

leona maguire

Arguably the form player of the bunch, the 29-year-old from County Cavan in Ireland was edged out by Korda in the latest of her LPGA triumphs in the championship match of the T-Mobile Match Play in Las Vegas in early April.

Maguire had earned the top seed in the match-play bracket by going six under through 54 holes of stroke play. She then defeated Thailand's Moriya Jutanugarn 4&3 and South Korea's Sei Young Kim 3&2 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively, before faltering against Korda.

KORDA WINS LPGA

Her match play prowess will be of no great surprise to followers of the Solheim Cup who have watched her tear it up to the tune of 4.5 points from five matches in 2021 and three in 2023 - both successes for Team Europe.

So far the majors have proven hard to conquer for Maguire, with a tied-fourth finish at the 2022 Women's British Open her best yet, but she's certainly got the game to change all that.

Stephanie Meadow

SPRINGFIELD, NJ - JUNE 25: Stephanie Meadow of Northern Ireland tees off at the 6th tee during the final round of the LPGA KPMG Women's PGA Championship on June 25, 2023 at Baltusrol Golf Club (Lower Course) in Springfield, New Jersey. The 32-year-old from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland turned professional 10 years ago shortly after qualifying for the 2014 US Women's Open where she'd secure a hugely-impressive third-placed finish.

Meadow failed to kick on from such impressive beginnings, making the cut only twice over the next six years but since 2021 she has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes, carding top-10 finishes for the last two years running at the Women's PGA Championship - with her tied-third in 2023 matching her career best.

She also placed eighth at the Blue Bay LPGA last month that points to her game being in good order coming into the first major of the year.

Gemma Dryburgh

Gemma Dryburgh (Associated Press)

The 30-year-old Scot enjoyed quite the rise when, off the back of a first LPGA Tour win at the Toto Japan Classic in November 2022, she catapulted herself into the world's top 100.

Dryburgh showed it was far from a flash in the pan as she kicked on to a career-high ranking of 50 last year, earning herself a maiden Solheim Cup spot as one of the four captain's picks in Suzann Pettersen's victorious squad.

Her best-yet finish at a major also came last year as she finished eighth at the Evian Championship in France which was ultimately claimed by home favourite Boutier.

Can she improve on that this week? Two top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour already this year point to her game being in a strong enough state to see her in the mix come Sunday.

The Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Tampa is set to rock the Ladies European Tour (LET) this weekend in its primary stateside tournament, before the much-anticipated Solheim Cup later in 2024.

Kicking off for the very first time in Tampa on Friday 8 March, the Feather Sound Country Club in Clearwater is set to host a prestigious tournament featuring some of the most prominent figures in women's golf as they compete for a coveted title on the LET.

The tournament boasts an impressive lineup of 84 competitors, including 39 LET champions, nine LPGA victors, and three major champions. The star golfers will also be competing in the event's team component where each group of four will be enhanced by the addition of an amateur player, all contributing to the team's overall score.

GolfMagic is out at the Aramco Team Series Tampa this week, so keep your eyes peeled to our Instagram page for some cool content with a number of LPGA Tour stars

Charley Hull and Lexi Thompson headline star names at Aramco Team Series Tampa

Team USA star Lexi Thompson, alongside her Solheim Cup 2023 teammate Megan Khang and newly announced assistant captain Brittany Lincicome, will battle Team Europe’s shining lights Charley Hull and Carlota Ciganda, this time for the total $1m prize fund split across the team and individual events.

Ciganda, Spain’s Solheim Cup superstar, took it to the final hole to win the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF - Florida in 2023 and she will be looking to replicate her performance from West Palm Beach to pip the competition to the individual for a second year running.

Discussing the weekend ahead, Ciganda said: “This is a fun course, I feel like it’s pretty wide open, and one that you can go low with if you bring it all together out there.”

“With the win last year, it's a special event for me, and I would love to win again this year. I am excited to play the course and get going on Friday.

“I really enjoy team events, they are a lot of fun. Having played in Riyadh and winning there, hopefully I can have another fun team and we can do the same this week.”

Team Roussin, last year’s triumphant group in Florida consisted of captain Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, Spaniard Nuria Iturrioz and Solheim Cup celestial Trish Johnson, all of whom find themselves returning to the Sunshine State in 2024 to compete for glory.

Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Tampa is the fourth stop for the LET elite and Briton Bronte Law will be arriving at Feather Sound Country Club as the most recent champion following a win at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco just a week ago.

Shannon Tan of Singapore, a competing amateur at last year’s Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF - Singapore, will be full to the brim with confidence after her first professional win at the LET’s first event of 2024, the Magical Kenya Ladies Open, which made her the first Singaporean to win on the LET.

One of three major winners in the field this week is Sophia Popov, making her first professional golf appearance since the birth of her first child in June of 2023. The 2020 AIG Women’s Open Champion is looking to hit the ground running, as she captains a team on her first ever Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF event.

Having finished runner-up in the team event at Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF - New York in 2021, the German national will be looking to go one step further in Tampa and seal the win.

Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Tampa is one of the five team events on the LET teeing off at 8:30am (ET) on Friday 8 March. Future stops stretch across the globe, including destinations in Asia, the Middle East and the United Kingdom. With International Women’s Day on the first day of competition here in Tampa, the showcase of women’s excellence in golf will not be one to miss.

Learning to cope with ADHD helps Charley Hull on the golf course

lpga tour hull

SEOUL – Learning to manage her attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has translated into results on the golf course for Charley Hull, who moved to a career-high seventh in the world rankings in March.

The current world No. 8 revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with “severe” ADHD, a realisation that came after a casual round of golf with a doctor.

Over the past year, she has learnt more about her condition and how to deal with the symptoms.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Aramco Team Series – Korea, Hull said: “I feel like knowing my routines and sticking to my routine (helps). I know how to manage it and that’s the best thing.”

The Briton will be in action at the New Korea Country Club this week, alongside six-time LPGA winners Danielle Kang and Kim Hyo-joo.

Singaporean professional Shannon Tan will also feature in the US$1 million (S$1.36 million) event, which will be held from May 10 to 12.

Living with ADHD can make things challenging, with Hull saying previously that she sometimes feels restless and has difficulty sleeping.

But she feels that it has also had a positive impact on her game, allowing her to get in the zone and grasp certain things quickly.

She said: “It kind of helps with my golf because I can get hyperfocused on stuff and I get to work on swing changes very quickly.

“I get bored very quickly with stuff so I find concentrating on the golf course quite hard to do but I now know what to do, I manage it loads better.”

It is an experience that is shared by other professional athletes with ADHD. Among them are 23-gold Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps and gymnastics’ four-gold Olympic champion Simone Biles, who were both diagnosed with the disorder as children.

Former National Basketball Association star Kevin Garnett discovered that he had ADHD only in the later part of his career.

To cope, Hull has found certain practices that help her combat her boredom. On the course, this includes taking in the views and drinking a lot of water.

When she is not on tour, she likes to keep active by taking walks and hikes, driving and practising her sport.

After taking a four-week break due to mental struggles in early 2023, Hull returned in impressive form, tying for second at the US Women’s Open in July.

She followed that up with another runner-up finish at the Women’s Open a month later before coming in second again at the Kroger Queen City Championship.

In 2024, she has had two top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour, and came in second and third at the Aramco Team Series in Tampa and the Aramco Ladies International respectively.

In South Korea, Hull is hoping to maintain her impressive track record in the Aramco Team Series, which is sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour. She won the New York event in 2021 and has had three more runner-up finishes.

“I’ve been playing well, with my game in good shape and having a positive season so far. I just need to keep at it, working on my swing and getting to know the course better here,” said the two-time LPGA Tour winner, whose team comprises professionals Michele Thomson and Felicity Johnson, and amateur Yang Hyo-jin.

“The greens are lightning fast, so patience will be key. But I’m buzzing for the challenge ahead – there are loads of chances to make birdies this week, as long as I keep it accurate.”

Dutchwoman Anne van Dam, who has five wins on the LET, is looking forward to competing in the tour’s first event in Korea.

She said: “One of the enjoyable aspects of the LET is the opportunity to compete globally, experiencing diverse cultures along the way.

“It’s fantastic to be here in Korea, a new stop for us on the Tour. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying my time here so far.”

How Far LPGA Tour Players Hit Every Club In The Bag

The latest Trackman data reveals the average distances and speeds from shots hit on the LPGA Tour in 2023

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Celine Boutier driving

LPGA Tour players have embraced new equipment, new technology and become physically stronger, allowing them to carry greater distances and hit longer shots with each club in the bag.

Back in the 1990s, power-hitters like Dame Laura Davies stood out from the crowd and in 1992 when the LPGA first started collecting driving distance stats, Davies’ 258.87 yards was 20 yards longer than the next longest hitter, Juli Inkster . To put this into context, in today’s modern era, Germany’s Polly Mack claimed the 2023 LPGA average driving-distance crown with 281.75 yards.

Other big-name players such as Lexi Thompson , Nelly Korda and Emily Pedersen have the ability to consistently bomb their drives around 280 yards. Of course, there have been so many advancements in technology, but Davies’ driving distance in her heyday would have ranked her 63rd on the list.

Over the past five to 10 years, most LPGA Tour players have seen their distances creep up. For example, in 2013, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda was driving the ball an average distance of 255 yards, but fast forward to 2023 and she’s gained over 10 yards with an average of 267 yards.

Six-time LPGA winner Celine Boutier is not one of the longest hitters, but compared to when she joined the LPGA Tour in 2017 and drove the ball on average 235 yards, she’s upped that distance to 253 yards.

Carlota Ciganda

In 10 years, Carlota Ciganda has gained over 10 yards in driving distance

The latest Trackman data shows that LPGA Tour players carry their drives 223 yards with a club-head speed of 96 mph, which encourages a ball speed of 143 mph and a maximum height of 26 yards off the ground.

By comparison, PGA Tour players carry the ball 282 yards off the tee with a club-head speed of around 115 mph, a ball speed of 171 mph, which flies to a height of 35 yards.

As for female amateur golfers, and according to the latest Arccos data , they drive the ball 177 yards on average, which almost equates to the same carry distance of a female tour player’s hybrid, which is 178 yards.

In terms of 3-wood and 5-wood, female tour players averaged 200 yards and 189 yards, respectively, in 2023. A 4-iron is Charley Hull's favourite club, and while the LPGA Tour average for that club was 175 yards, the English woman is likely to send it way past that number with her equivalent.

There is minimal difference in the carry distance between a hybrid at 178 yards and 4-iron at 175 yards, but then the data shows consistent gapping of between 10-12 yards from a 5-iron at 166 yards down through the rest of the set to a PW, which these women carry around 111 yards.

Ladies European Tour stops in Korea for three-day Aramco Team Series

K im Hyo-joo hits her shot from the second tee during the second round of the JM Eagle LA Championship presented by Plastpro at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles, California on on April 26. [AFP/YONHAP]

The Aramco Team Series presented by Public Investment Fund will make its debut in Korea on Friday at the New Korea Country Club in Goyang, Gyeonggi with LPGA golfer Kim Hyo-joo joining the 144-field.

Ryu hae-ran finishes third at jm eagle in los angeles, korea's lpga pros vie for a win at $7.9 million chevron championship, lee mi-hyang nabs tied third at first ford classic.

Established in 2020, the Aramco Team Series is a Ladies European Tour (LET) event taking place multiple times in different locations around the world every year. Korea is the second stop this year, after Florida in March.

This year marks the first time the tournament has visited Korea and also the first time that any LET event has been held in the country. For this year’s series, Golf Saudi has partnered with Korea's Kolon Group, which has hosted KPGA tournament Kolon Korea Open for 34 years.

The three-day Aramco Series consist of two events: A two-day 36-hole stroke play team event in which each team or four compete for the team title and a three-day 54-hole stroke play individual event in which only pro golfers participate.

The two events are one and the same for the first two days, with the 108 pro golfers playing alongside 36 amateur golfers in the team event, and the pro golfers individual scores simultaneously being counted for the individual pro event.

The team event will see 36 teams, each consisting of three professional golfers and one amateur, compete for the team trophy. Team captains are selected based on the official Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. In a random order, the captains select a golfer to join their teams, before each team randomly receives one more pro and an amateur.

The 36 captains have been selected, but the teams are still to be determined as of press time Wednesday.

The team event will follow the “two-from-four” format, where the two best scores on each hole are combined and used as the team’s score. The team with the fewest stroke wins the team event. This will allow an amateur golfer to impact the team’s score, as her score could be used if it is higher than a pro’s.

At the close of play on Saturday, the team event will end and the pro field will be to cut to 60 and ties based on individual scores up to that point.

The final 18 holes of the individual 54-hole stroke play event will then be played on Sunday to decide the individual title winner.

Kim, No. 12 on the rankings, joins the field after competing on the 2024 LPGA for over two months during which she managed two top-10 finishes. She has yet to win a title, however, having last secured silverware at the Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America in October last year.

“I’ve heard from those on the Tour how special Aramco Team Series events are and how their levels are similar to LPGA majors,” Kim said in a press release. “I decided to compete in the event as soon as I heard that it would take place in Korea for the first time.

“The unique format for the tournament excites me. I’ve never competed in a tournament like this, and I will do my best to show the gallery a high-level performance as I compete alongside fellow LPGA golfers on Korean soil.”

No Korean golfer has won the individual title at an Aramco Team Series event before, but world No. 5 Ko Jin-young finished as runner-up at the 2023 Hong Kong tournament.

She lost the title to Lin Xiyu from China after a playoff. Ko is not competing this year, but fellow LPGA golfers will be in the field, including Danielle Kang from the United States.

“I’m thrilled to be participating in the Aramco Team Series in Korea,” Kang said. “I absolutely love the team aspect of this series and can’t wait to play alongside great field of golfers from both the LPGA and LET. I am very thankful for this opportunity and excited to compete in Korea.”

Kang, 31, is a veteran golfer who has competed on the LPGA Tour since 2012, winning six titles, including a major at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2017.

She has not lifted a trophy on the Tour since winning the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in 2022. She joins the Aramco Series with a relatively unimpressive performance on the Tour this season, having failed to make the cut in three of the seven events.

Her best finish was joint 20th at the Honda LPGA Thailand in February.

Kang has prior experience in the Aramco Series, though, as she competed at the 2023 Singapore event, where she finished as runner-up in the individual event after falling four strokes behind Pauline Roussin from France.

England's Charley Hull, ranked at world No. 7 as of April 29 — when the Aramco Series decided the team captains based on the rankings — is also participating after winning the individual title of the Aramco series in New York in 2021 and managing two runner-up finishes in the team events in July 2023 and March this year.

Hull has yet to win a title on the LPGA Tour this season, but she has managed two top-10 finishes and tied for 13th at the JM Eagle LA Championship last month.

Kim, Kang and Hull will compete against each other in the team series, as were all selected as captains.

The Aramco Series also offers the viewing public a rare glimpse into the New Korea Country Club which has operated as an exclusively and highly sought after members’ club for its 38 years of existence. The course offers some mountain views, which are especially notable on the par-4 10th hole.

The course is located only a half-hour drive from western Seoul, making it relatively accessible for many golf fans from the capital and satellite cities of Seoul in northern Gyeonggi.

As well as the golfers on the course, the gallery can also enjoy a bit of virtual reality golf at the Aramco Energy Zone during the tournament. The fan zone, meanwhile, will have beverages and food for spectators.

Three more Aramco Series tournaments are scheduled this year, with the series heading to England in July, a yet-to-be confirmed location in Asia in October and Saudi Arabia in November.
