Show Me Mizzou. News from the University of Missouri

What’s new at Mizzou

Here are five things to know as the school year begins.

Aug. 19, 2024 Contact: Janese Heavin, [email protected] Photos by Abbie Lankitus, Sam O'Keefe and Andy Ramirez

The University of Missouri is welcoming students back this fall with some new spaces, places and faces.

Mizzou faculty and staff spent the summer getting campus ready for students, which includes a freshman class of nearly 6,000. From revamping iconic spots to welcoming top-notch faculty, there’s a lot to be excited about this semester.

Here are five things to know as you start the year.

Quad construction and MU sign at Tiger Avenue

1. Construction crews were hard at work. The most notable project of the summer? Francis Quadrangle. The Quad has been regraded, resodded and equipped with a state-of-the-art irrigation system. As part of the project, crews are replacing an 1880s underground utility tunnel outside of Jesse Hall with work set to wrap up by Nov. 1. Once that project is finished, expect to see the sidewalk extended to the north of Jesse, providing more space for events and gatherings.

There’s also a new entryway and large MU logo at Tiger Avenue, and a selfie-perfect M-I-Z statue will be installed next to the Reynolds Alumni Center this fall.

Collage of food and eateries around campus

2. Enjoy a feast of new dining options. Your taste buds are in for a treat. Mizzou is expanding its dining scene. Savor Kitchen, which serves up fresh and flavorful fare made without wheat, eggs, nuts, fish and other top allergens, is now open next to Johnston Hall. You can also get pizza by the slice at Do Mundo’s in the MU Student Center, or pick up sandwiches, salads and other grab-and-go bites at 11 locations across campus. Check out all dining options and menus here.

3. New leadership takes the reins. Meet Mizzou’s provost and executive vice chancellor, Matthew Martens . Though new to the role, Martens is a familiar face at Mizzou, having served as interim provost since February and in senior leadership roles in the office for the past eight years. As provost, he’s all about enhancing the learning experience, ensuring students are prepared for the future and recruiting and retaining top-tier faculty.

Other familiar and new faces at Mizzou this year include:

  • Kara Whatley , vice provost and university librarian.
  • Marisa Chrysochoou , dean of the College of Engineering.
  • Srinand “Sri” Sreevatsan , dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
  • Chris Smith , interim vice chancellor for advancement.
  • Sarah Diem , interim dean of the College of Education and Human Development.

And be sure to welcome the many new faculty members starting this fall, including John Anderson , Mizzou alumnus and former acclaimed Sports Center anchor, who has joined the Missouri School of Journalism.

4. Gear up and mark your calendars. Head over to The Mizzou Store and stock up for Black and Gold Fridays, which return Sept. 6 and College Colors Day, which is Aug. 30. Don’t miss out on new products, including new Mizzou-themed Nike footwear.

A few other note-worthy dates include:

  • Thursday, Aug. 29: Cheer on the Tigers at the first home football game against Murray State. Watch your email for information about faculty staff and student parking on game day.
  • Thursday, Aug. 29: Mizzou will launch a partnership with Lululemon, offering branded apparel, backpacks, belt bags and more.
  • Saturday, Oct. 19: Don’t miss Mizzou Homecoming—Lead the Legacy. Be sure to wear gold.

Collage of people

5. Make the most of your Mizzou experience. At Mizzou, learning extends beyond the classroom. One of the best ways to hone your organizational, communication and leadership skills is by getting involved. Kick things off with the Get Involved Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Kuhlman Court. Meet members of some of Mizzou’s 600+ student organizations, chat with an Involvement Ambassador and discover new interests. Visit the Involvement Week website to view all the events.

Then, plan to show off Mizzou to loved ones during Family Weekend Sept. 13-Sept. 15. Check out the many events and prepare to soak up all that campus and Columbia have to offer.

Curious about Mizzou’s future? Be sure to attend or tune in to the State of the University at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Jesse Auditorium as University of Missouri President Mun Choi outlines the university’s priorities for the coming school year .

University of Missouri won't allow event to be called 'Welcome Black BBQ,' Black student group says

A wide view of the University of Missouri campus, students walk on the lawn

A Black student government at the University of Missouri said the school will not allow it to name its fall event "Welcome Black BBQ."

The group, the Legion of Black Collegians, said that it was "heartbroken" after it spent months fighting to keep the original name but that the public university in Columbia decided it needed to be modified to "Welcome Black and Gold BBQ," after the school colors.

"When presented with the idea, we initially wanted to keep the original name or not have the event at all," the group wrote on Instagram .

It said it decided to move forward with the event because it did not want to "override the hard work our government and other black student leaders put into this nor face consequences that could lead to massive losses for our government so early into the year."

Christopher Ave, a university spokesperson, said that the event is sponsored by the school and that the name was modified "to reflect that our campus is open and welcoming to all."

"Achieving excellence for all is at the core of the University of Missouri’s mission," he said in a statement. "And clearly, in striving for an inclusive university, we must not exclude (or give impressions that we are excluding) individuals with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives."

The barbecue will be held Friday at the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center. It gives new and returning students a chance to meet one another.

"The event itself is not changing," the group said in its Instagram post. "Although this is not the desired outcome, we still want the barbecue to remain a staple for incoming and returning Black students to make connections and find their space at Mizzou."

The Legion of Black Collegians started in 1968 to protest the song "Dixie's" being played at a football game while students waved the Confederate flag, the group's website says . "Dixie" is associated with the pre-Civil War South, and some people say it is racially insensitive.

It describes itself as the only Black student government in the country, writing on its website that other schools have either a Black Student Union or a Black Student Alliance.

"We are looking into all avenues to NEVER allow this to happen again," the group said on Instagram. "If it does, rest assured the Legion will have nothing to do with it. The erasure of the names and visibility of our events will continue to erode our presence on this campus, and we plan to do everything we can to divest from that."

Mu, mdc offer free testing for oak diseases.

university of missouri columbia campus tour

COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension’s Plant Diagnostic Clinic, in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), will offer free testing for all common oak tree diseases in 2024.

“With this service, we hope to collect information on the location and host species of oak diseases across the state,” says Peng Tian, director of the Plant Diagnostic Clinic on the MU campus. “We are also actively scouting for new or invasive diseases of oaks to better assist MDC and the Missouri Department of Agriculture with controlling forest pest problems.”

Oaks are the most abundant trees in yards and forests across Missouri. Two common oak diseases are bacterial leaf scorch and oak wilt. Oak wilt weakens white oak trees and kills red oaks within weeks of infection. Bacterial leaf scorch is a chronic disease that worsens over several years. Both diseases spread to nearby oaks.

Oak wilt symptoms first appear in late spring or early summer in red oak. Leaves discolor, wilt and fall, first at the top of the tree and later at the tips of lateral branches. Leaves turn a dull, bronzed brown at the tips and along the outer margins. Similar symptoms appear in white oak trees in mid-to-late summer. Trees infected for two or more years commonly develop isolated dead branches in the crown.

Bacterial leaf scorch infects the xylem of susceptible trees and prevents water and nutrients from being transported. There is no cure for bacterial leaf scorch on oak, and trees die within five to eight years. Symptoms are similar to drought stress and can only be diagnosed by laboratory analysis.

If you suspect either disease in your trees, Tian recommends sending samples to the clinic for testing and confirmation.

You may first send three to five photos to the clinic. Go to https://mizzou.us/PDC-DSF for instructions on submitting photos online. Tian suggests submitting both close-up photos and photos from a distance. MU Plant Diagnostic Clinic staff will contact you about submitting physical samples, depending on the tree health problems observed in the photos.

For bacterial leaf scorch testing on oaks, select leaves that are still green but show leaf scorch symptoms, says Tian. Collect 20-30 leaves with the petiole (leaf stem) attached and pack them in a sealed plastic storage bag with a damp paper towel. Keep the leaves cool. Contact the lab about shipping recommendations.

For oak wilt testing, collect four to six branch sections that are about 8-12 inches long, roughly 0.5-1.5-inch in diameter and alive but showing symptoms of leaf wilt.

Keep the samples cool, but do not freeze them, says Tian. Samples that get hot during transit to the lab may not test positive for the fungus. Contact the lab about shipping recommendations and timing.

For more information on sample submission, visit the MU Plant Diagnostic Clinic website at http://muext.us/PlantClinic The clinic is at 28 Mumford Hall, 1100 University Ave., Columbia, and is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday to Friday.
