An enjoyable tour. Mixture of all age groups and a manageable size. Covered the main sightseeing things and encountered many Japanese experiences along the way. My expectations were met.

Japan One Life Adventures - 10 Days

Our guide Brad was a great guy and he was always helpful whenever we needed anything. But the company's choices in terms of the itinerary and accomodation were questionable for Tokyo, especially for the first hotel since it was the first impression we got.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

I recently booked the 7day Essential tour to Japan. Want to commend 3 tour guides that accompanied my group in those 7 days. First guide MINJI Japanese born but spoke perfect spanish ,english and of course Japenese. She was with us the inicial 6days of the tour. What a fun, knowledgeable, patient, fun, entertaining guide she was. To make our long bus rides less boring, she had us learn to write our name in Japanese , another we had a japanese vocabulary lesson, and last we got to make an origami swan. She was AWESOME. Next David I believe he is from Spain he was with us 1day. Full of energy, humor and music. Last KIKO from Argentina sweet and very patient and helpful. The tour itself was well planned. Loved all the hotels we stayed at. Breakfast was good. All hotels were conviently located across from the train stations except in Osaka. Tours were great wish we had a little more time..but it was really crowded with tourist at most of the places we visited...so understandable. Favorite places for me Mt Fuji,Asakusa, Inari Shrines,Bamboo Forest, Nara. Again it was great thanks Europamundo y TourRadar

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms) Tour

9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)

I'm still unsure as to why this is called a 10 Day Tour. We had a excellent guide for 6 of the 10 days, and we found out we were together with those with a 7 day tour, with free time in Tokyo for the remaining 3 days in which you have to get around yourself with no guide. The excursions to Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo are not included in the tour price - otherwise you have to travel around yourself. The hotels in Osaka and Tokyo are booked out of the city centres and take about 40 - 50 minutes to travel (if you're flying out of Tokyo, I'd suggest organising from Haneda since it's on the direct train line). I would suggest organising an IC card (Suica for arriving in Tokyo or Icoca for Osaka) on arrival, otherwise buying tickets to explore yourself is difficult. If I had the time again, I would have booked the shorter tour of 7 days and organise my own accommodation for the remainder of the trip, seeing as it would be better value. The sites of interest are a bit rushed as well, and are usually tourist hotshots which can get very crowded. You don't get much time in Osaka, which is disappointing, seeing as there are interesting areas such as Sakai (one of three notable places for knives - not Kappabashi Street!) and Tennoji for parks and zoos. It's either going around Osaka or going to Hiroshima on a day excursion. Our guide, Andre, was amazing and knowledgeable about the areas we visited. He was mindful of our group - about 35 people in total (several families with young children, older people). He made sure to introduce the solo travellers so we could make travel companions. He recommended regional food and activities, and made the optional tours worthwhile and comfortable. Overall, I enjoyed the time with the group, but would look at the shorter Stunning Tours instead for better value. The kicker is that this tour went on sale soon after, which was dramatically reduced.

Premium Japan Tour

Premium Japan

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Our guide, Taka was there for us everyday making sure we were all enjoying the local sights and experiences according to our individual interests and those of the group. He was very organized with tickets for trains, buses and the subway, keeping track of all 15 of us and never losing anyone. When we were shopping he helped us find what we were looking for. My granddaughter and I returned home feeling we truly experienced the beauty and life of the country and it’s people.

Japan One Life Adventures - 14 Days Tour

Japan One Life Adventures - 14 Days

This tour was everything I needed it to be ! It was fast paced, itinerary packed, culture conscious and we covered so much in such little time. My highlights would have been: Omoide Yokocho in Tokyo, Takayama temple stay, Fushimi Inari (early 5am start with no crowds was worth it !), Kyoto tea ceremony/kimono hire, Kendo class in Kyoto, Osaka food tour/karaoke and Hiroshima was by far my favourite place we visited !! I want to add in that our local guide in Hiroshima was amazing and I really felt her passion for her home city. This tour is definitely not for the faint hearted. There’s alot of public transport used with multiple station changes so being physically prepared to carry your 15-20kg backpack and walking up stairs is necessary. There’s also not a lot of opportunities to eat at “restaurants” for both lunch and dinner due to the queues in peak season so being adaptable and getting food on the go or being prepared the night before for an early breakfast is also important for planning. Both my partner and I easily adapted but it was evident not everyone in our group was prepared for this kind of travelling. I’ve done multiple tours across multiple countries and multiple tour companies and this is normal for fast paced tours! I hope this knowledge helps future customers with their expectations of this tour. Having Brad as our incredible tour leader made it all possible. He was attentive to everyone’s holiday wishes and structured our days to make sure we weren’t lost in crowds travelling through the Sakura season. We were able to see certain tourist attractions at different times of the day (sunrise vs sunset) and the crowds were tolerable or even at times minimal. Brad was always around to help, always contactable via messaging and provided us with great information about each place we visited. He was able to give great suggestions for things to do in our spare time or places to eat and he never let us down. Without a doubt the best ramen I’ve ever eaten came from one of his suggestions! Brad was very patient with our group as there was a huge age gap between a portion of the group (29 years gap between me and the eldest on the tour) so everyone’s needs were vastly different. The younger group was very easy going and adaptable to the tour structure and accomodating to any changes where as the older side of the group were very stern with their wishes and at times made it quite difficult for Brad by splitting the group apart. He was utterly professional, courteous and truly did an amazing job to make this tour experience the best he could for everyone. Thank you again OneLife for my THIRD amazing tour. I’m so grateful for my time away in Japan. We will be returning customers again. Next stop: INDIA 🇮🇳 or Morocco 🇲🇦

Japan: Tokyo Nights & Kyoto Temples

Tour was great! I had fun. CEO Sho and Tetsu were amazing in guiding us all over the locations and teaching the culture and history of shrines and streets. Catching trains & subways like ninjas, experiencing the bathing ways of japanese or using onsen is one of my favorite. Plus I’m with amazing young groups. I wish I had more time to discover more of places. I’l definitely come back!

What people love about Japan Tours in December

Japan was so fun! A looooooot of free time so do you researches about what to do and visit in every city. Would have love more ''organised'' activities (like a dinner every night with the group,...). Compared to other G Adventures tour I did in the past, I felt that this group was less stick together since there was only a few group activities.
Fun, stress free, and organized traveling in Japan.

GUIDE Japan in December

  • Japan in December

The silver season arrives

The end of the calendar year sees such seasonal highlights as wide-spread winter illuminations, the start of the ski season and often the first snowfall. Weather ranges from autumnal cool to proper winter cold. Japan's oshogatsu holiday season comes at the end of the month with Christmas being more of a token event. Crisp, clear winter skies make mountain vistas pop against azure backgrounds with everything seeming that little bit extra special at year's end.

Know Before You Go

  • Early season skiing is possible from mid to late December at some resorts
  • The new year's period is a busy and expensive time to travel with some businesses closing for a few days
  • The Oshogatsu holiday period typically runs from December 29 to January 3 depending on how the days fall
  • Many shrines hold New Year's Eve events on December 31

Turn of the season, turn of the year

The chic, sophisticated Marunouchi district

New Year's Eve and the first few days of the new year are the more important holiday for Japanese. While most visitors don't get to experience it in a family setting, you can visit shrines to see the new year in like a local. Many hold events and prepare warm sake, toshikoshi soba (buckwheat noodles), and pork soup for visitors.

Lighting up the night

As with fireworks, Japan excels at making lavish light displays in the wintertime. Many start in mid-November and continue through the winter adding a certain frisson to chilly city nights.

You'll find major displays all over Tokyo and, if you have time, you can even take the Yamanote Line around the city to see a few of them. A short walk from Shimbashi Station, visitors can see the Caretta Illumination. The Midtown Christmas event near Roppongi Station has a shorter run, until December 25.

Ringing in the ski season

Most popular ski resorts are up and running by mid- to late December. When snowfall is scarce early in the season, resorts use artificial snow to compensate. Hokkaido's big resorts may open as early as the end of November.

Two birds, one stone

Many of Japan's ski resorts double as hot spring resorts, or at least have a selection of onsen bathing spots nearby. Worth a visit for the baths in their own right, they offer pleasurable post-ski relaxation or a viable alternative to skiing and snowboarding.

Culture and customs.

Japan is a multifaceted country made up of many different cultures, rituals, and traditions influenced by Confucianism (introduced in AD285), Buddhism (introduced in AD552), and Shintoism (Japan’s ritualistic native religion). The rise of technology and international trendsetting has also played a part in the culture of Japan today as the younger generation embraces fashion-forwardness, online personas, and high-tech gadgets.

This is in direct contrast to the Confucian-influenced, old-school Japanese culture that the older generations still live by, with a larger emphasis on modesty, respect, and discipline. This can sometimes cause conflict between the two demographics, however, there are still some traditions that are considered sacred regardless of age – tea ceremonies, bowing, kendo, geisha, and sumo.

Visit ancient temples and walk history-laden pilgrim routes on a 8 day Koya-san & Kumano Trek.

History and government

Japan has had an interesting past with its ancient history, pre-modern history, and 20th-century history, all influencing the country we all know and love today.

Ancient history

While there is evidence the archipelago has been occupied by humans for around 35,000 years, what we know now as ‘Japan’ began to take shape about 1700 years ago as disparate tribes started to unify.

Pre-modern history

Over the centuries, Japan has alternated between feudal, empirical, religious, and government rule, with each period birthing different styles of art, architecture, and spirituality. Buddhism and Confucianism, introduced in 552 BC and AD 285, respectively, both proved massively influential on the class structures and governance of pre-modern Japan. You can still visit and stay in many Buddhist temples in Japan today.

20th century

It’s difficult to discuss the emergence of modern Japan without talking about WWII. During the war, the Empire of Japan used aggressive military tactics in an attempt to expand its reach and control in Asia and elsewhere. In response, the US Army instigated a strategic bombing campaign that included the notorious use of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The result of these attacks was mass human and structural devastation.

These bombings, along with depleted armed forces and the looming threat of invasion from the Soviet Union, led the Empire of Japan to surrender unconditionally to the Allies in September 1945.

The ‘Empire of Japan’ became ‘Japan’ as part of the extensive terms of surrender, and the nation faced the prospect of rebuilding and reinventing itself in the second half of the 20th century.

Reflect on the historic and sobering sites of Hiroshima and Nagasaki while on an 24 day Ultimate Japan tour.

After WWII, Japan found its feet operating as a free-market economy based around the manufacture and export of automobiles and electronics, experiencing particularly rapid growth between 1960 and the late 1980s. The late 20th century saw the country emerge as an economic superpower, and with that came the flourishing of several cultural sectors, such as the arts and cuisine.

Experience Japan's historic sites on a 13 day Land of the Rising Sun tour.

Top places to visit in Japan

One minute you’re walking through a former black-market quarter, the next, you’re paying your respects at a 1400-year-old temple. Eclectic Tokyo is an essential part of any visit to Japan. Wander through the streets of Tokyo on our 12 day Classic Japan tour.

If you’ve ever eaten at a sushi train restaurant, you’ve got the underrated city of Osaka to thank! The motto in this city is 'kuidaore', which roughly translates as ‘eat until you drop’ . You can consider that a (friendly) order. Experience Osaka on our 12 day Japan Family Holiday.

The home of temples, palaces, and the Gion district (where geisha live and work), Kyoto is also where you’ll find the famed Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. Spot Geisha in Kyoto on our 9 day Japan Express tour.

4. Kanazawa

A great place to see a slice of old Japan, with classic sculpted gardens, a restored Old Town, and well-preserved architecture from a variety of eras. Explore Kanazawa on our 11 day Cycle Japan tour or on our 10 day Essential Japan adventure.

5. Hiroshima

Most travelers visit Hiroshima to see the Peace Memorial Park, constructed around the hypocentre of the atomic bomb that destroyed the city in 1945. Follow this up with nearby Miyajima, a tranquil island where tame deer roam the streets.

6. Yudanaka

This quaint resort town is best experienced in the winter, when snow coats the normally evergreen trees and Japanese macaques come down from the mountains to bathe and groom each other in the steaming natural hot springs of Jigokudani (Hell Valley).

Geography and environment

Japan is an archipelago of more than 6000 islands located in the Pacific Ocean in Asia . The main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku. Lying on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is prone to destructive earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity. The most famous volcano, Mount Fuji , is also Japan's highest peak and only 100km from Tokyo.

Japan has plenty of forested, mountainous terrain that is unsuitable for agriculture and development, so much of the population lives in the coastal cities. This has led Japan to become one of the most densely populated countries in the world and the majority of its inhabitants are used to living in very small spaces, with a heavy reliance on public transport.

Although life is fast-paced and crowded in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, rural areas typically feature low-density, traditional housing and a slower pace of life surrounded by greenery such as lush forests and plenty of moss-covered boulders.

Traverse mountains, cycle coastlines, and meander through forests on a 12 day Japan: Hike, Bike and Kayak tour.

Shopping in Japan is fun but expensive, so be sure to have a budget for souvenirs planned in advance! In cities like Tokyo, there are loads of quirky stores and funky galleries showcasing the works of independent fashion designers and gadget creators. From the outlandish to the kitsch, you're guaranteed to find loads of colorful clothing and edgy art that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

If you’re planning to bring back leaf tea or any other perishable or edible items, it's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have strict quarantine laws.

What to buy

  • Kimonos This quintessential Japanese souvenir looks great hung on the wall as an interesting decorative piece. If you plan on wearing one, make sure you do so respectfully and learn the correct way to fold the garment.
  • Paper lanterns, kites and fans Japanese paper goods make great, relatively inexpensive souvenirs. Choose from high-quality, traditionally-made kites or delicate rice paper lanterns.
  • Electronics Shops in Japan are bursting with the latest tech gadgets. Just be sure to check that they are compatible for use at home.
  • Fashion Have fun with the amazing diversity of popular street culture fashion available in Japan. Vibrant, brash and sometimes bizarre – find something that no one back at home will be wearing.
  • Anime and manga paraphernalia Another inexpensive gift option, even for people who can’t read Japanese. Pick up a book, magazine, t-shirt or print from one of Japan’s many anime and manga stores.

Festivals and events

If you want an adventure with a point of difference, consider planning your travels to coincide with these popular festive events in Japan.

Sapporo Winter Festival

Held every February since 1950, this festival features hundreds of statues and ice sculptures, snow slides and mazes, regional food and artistic performances. Winter in Japan is truly amazing, and the Sapporo Winter Festival is a magical way to celebrate.

Hadaka Matsuri

Head to Okayama to watch thousands of men wearing nothing but loincloths vie to touch the chosen 'naked man'. It may look like a bizarre male-bonding exercise but it's actually a historic cleansing ritual dating back thousands of years. Dates change yearly.

Fuji Rock Festival

Held annually in the stunning surroundings of the Naeba Ski Resort, this outdoor music festival is huge and draws in big-name acts and local bands Thousands of music lovers flock to Naeba for three days of camping, music and partying in the summer months.

Is tipping customary in Japan?

Tipping isn't customary in Japan and is not expected – in fact, it will sometimes be considered impolite. Some inns or ryokans may leave a small envelope in your room where a small gratuity can be left for housekeeping staff.

What is the internet access like in Japan?

Internet access is excellent in Japan, with one of the most developed high-speed internet networks in the world. Internet cafes and wi-fi hotspots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell while in Japan?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Japan but be aware that talking loudly on your phone in public places (like in train carriages) is frowned upon. When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travelers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for autumn. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

What is the weather like in Japan?

  • Spring (March to May): temperatures range from 50 to 68°F, with conditions getting sunnier and clearer towards the end of the season.
  • Summer (June to August): temperatures range from 70 to 90°F depending on where you are. It’s warmer in the south than in the north. You can expect some rain in June, and it can get quite humid towards the end of the season.
  • Fall (September to November): temperatures range from 45 to 68°F. The humidity starts to calm down in September, but days stay warm until October. Nights can be chilly.
  • Winter (December to February): break out the coats, temperatures during winter range from 32 to 59°F. The mountains and the north experience snowfall .

How safe is Japan?

Japan is generally safe and is rated among the safest countries in the world. Reports of crime such as theft are very low and travelers are often stunned by the fact that locals leave belongings unaccompanied in cafes and bars (though we certainly don’t recommend it!).

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Is Japan accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

The needs of travelers with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, are considered in the infrastructure in major cities. Train stations have lifts (elevators), wide turnstiles and (for the most part) raised platforms so that wheelchair users can glide onto the train without being assisted.  Sidewalks in Japanese cities are sometimes sloped towards the road, which can make traveling a straight line difficult for wheelchair users or people with vision impairment.

It is common practice in Japan to remove shoes when entering a home. Wheelchair users should carry something to wipe down their wheels in respect of this custom. Apply the same logic for other mobility aids such as canes.

Ryokans and other traditional accommodation can be difficult to navigate for people with limited mobility, but accessible hotel options are plentiful in the major cities.

Travelers with vision impairment may find the tactile yellow strips that guide the way to various places in train stations helpful, though please note that there is no barrier between the train tracks and platforms.

If you have a battery-operated hearing aid, it’s a good idea to bring extra batteries or familiarise yourself with the Japanese equivalent of the batteries it takes.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Japan?

Summer months can be incredibly hot and sticky, so loose, lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.

Spring and autumn can be crisp and cold, so you might want to pack thermal layers in addition to your coat and boots.

Outside of Hokkaido and the mountains, the winter temperatures in Japan are manageable as long as you have regular cold-weather clothes like a good coat, pair of gloves, a winter hat and a scarf.

The style of dress common for women in Japan may be a little more covered up than you are used to, particularly outside the major cities.

Packing comfortable trousers is essential as you may find yourself sitting cross-legged on the floor during your stay.

What are some common phrases/words I should learn before my trip to Japan?

Having a basic understanding of the language and culture of the country you're visiting can go a long way when it comes to, not only communicating efficiently but your overall trip experience as well. Some common phrases you need to learn are:

  • 'hello' - Konnichiwa
  • 'good morning' - Ohayō
  • 'thank you' - Arigatou Gozaimasu

Winter in japan.

Why should you visit Japan in winter? Winter in Japan offers must-see sites blanketed in snow, savory seasonal dishes, and a list of winter activities for every traveler. Japan's winter season is vast depending on the region, but each are unique in beauty.

Winter in Japan can range from a generous amount of snowfall, to dry and mild weather conditions depending on certain parts of Japan. Japan enjoys its winter season in a list of ways. There is nothing like bathing in an outdoor onsen (hot springs) on a cold day, attending cheerful snow festivals, or enjoying delicious foods unique to the season. Northern regions of Japan, such as Hokkaido, experience an ample amount of snow that is perfect for its beautiful winter festivals. Kyoto or Tokyo, however, are known for its mostly dry and sunny winters, so you can still enjoy sightseeing.

Although Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, the country is big on night time illuminations, which are a romantic atmosphere to stroll around in. December also marks the first chance to see the famous onsen-bathing snow monkeys in Nagano. Visiting Japan in Januaryr Traveling to Japan in January means visitors have the opportunity to meet the famous Japanese snow monkeys at Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. The red-faced monkeys, or Japanese Macaque, can be found bathing in an outdoor onsen (hot springs) against an icy backdrop in the forest. January is also the perfect time for travelers to unwind in a warm onsen and enjoy savory foods unique to the cold season. Gardens and temples are particularly beautiful too, with delicate specks of snow and few visitors, it really sets the winter scene. December in Japan: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

If you are planning to visit Japan in December, it's best to avoid traveling to the country during the last week of the month and the first week of January, because this period is one of the busiest travel seasons in Japan. Just as they are in Western countries, many people are off work during this time for the holidays, and that can make it difficult to get reservations for transportation and accommodations without a considerable amount of advanced planning. And forget about booking a hotel at the last minute during this time.

Christmas is not a Japanese national holiday , as most people there are not Christian but practitioners of Buddhism, Shintoism, or no religion at all. Accordingly, businesses and schools are open on Christmas unless the holiday falls on a weekend. For this reason, traveling around Christmas Day in Japan isn't as difficult as doing so in Western countries.

While Christmas Day is essentially like any other day in Japan, it's important to note that Christmas Eve is celebrated there. It has become a night for couples to spend a romantic time together at fancy a restaurant or hotel in Japan. So, if you plan to go out on Christmas Eve, consider making your reservations as early as possible.

New Year's Eve and Day in Japan

New Year's holidays are very important for the Japanese, and people usually spend New Year's Eve rather quietly with the family. Because many people travel out of Tokyo to visit their hometowns or go on vacation, Tokyo is quieter than usual on this day. However, temples and shrines are extremely busy, as it has become customary in Japan to spend the New Year focused on one's life and spirituality.

The New Year holidays also coincides with store sales, so it's a great time to get some bargain shopping done if you don't mind large crowds. January 1 is a national holiday in Japan, and people traditionally mark the holiday by eating several foods for certain purposes, such as ebi (shrimp) for longevity and kazunoko (herring roe) for fertility.

Because the New Year is widely considered the most important holiday in Japan , most businesses and establishments in the country, including medical institutions, are closed from about December 29 through January 3 or 4. In recent years, however, many restaurants, convenience stores, supermarkets, and department stores have stayed open during the New Year holidays. So, if you manage to book your trip during this time, you'll have some options for dining and shopping.

Japan Weather in December

Japan is quite cold during the winter, with snow on the ground in many places across the country, but December is still pleasant in many places, as weather is more reminiscent of late fall than the middle of winter. Temperatures in December vary based on geography, but highs and lows in the middle of the country are generally mild:

  • Sapporo: 37 F/22 F
  • Tokyo: 54 F/39 F
  • Osaka: 53 F/40 F
  • Hiroshima: 52 F/37 F
  • Nagasaki: 55 F/42 F

December is also mostly dry with little rain or snow. The country receives just 1.7 inches (44 mm) of rainfall spread across nine days in December.

What to Pack

You'll want to pack general winter gear, including a coat, sweaters, and other layer-able tops, a scarf, and other winter accessories. It's a good idea to bring a warm hat and earmuffs for windy days. If you're planning to be outdoors in the cold, you can buy disposable kairo heating pads to protect your hands and feet. These handy pads cost around $2 USD for a pack of 10 and will stay warm up to 12 hours.

December Events in Japan

With the year coming to a close, there are plenty of traditional festivals and events that can add authenticity to your Japanese vacation.

  • Chichibu Yomatsuri (December 2): In this famous night festival, floats lit by lanterns are pulled through the town.
  • Sanpoji Daikon Festival (December 9-10): This Kyoto festival celebrates the popular daikon radish, which becomes available in the fall. More than 10,000 people eat the boiled radish during the celebration.
  • Akou Gishisai (December 14): This festival is a memorial to the 47 ronin (or wandering samurai) who committed suicide to avenge their master. The celebration includes traditional dance and warrior parades.

December Travel Tips

  • The New Year period might be a good time to stay in Tokyo. You may get good deals on nice hotels. On the other hand, onsen hot springs and snow resorts tend to be crowded with visitors. Early reservations are recommended if you plan to stay at onsen or snow sports destinations.
  • If you are taking long-distance trains, try to make seat reservations in advance. It's hard to get seats on non-reserved cars during the peak travel season.

December Weather in Japan

Japan has four seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Although the exact dates of each season vary by location, December is generally recognized as the month when  autumn ends   and   winter begins .

☁️ Early December Weather Conditions in Japan

You’ll generally experience cooler, but not frigid, weather during the beginning of the month. Of course, the further north you go up in Japan, the colder it gets.

Here are some averages to know for early December:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 40 °F to 56 °F in the southern regions (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 20 °F to 43 °F in the northern areas (e.g., Hokkaido).
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – December is Japan’s driest month, with an average of five rainy days out of 31. Rain is more common during the first half of the month, but not by much.

Rainy days are characterized by  occasional showers lasting  one to three hours. It’s rare to experience long-lasting downpours.

  • ☀️ Daylight hours – December begins with ten hours   of daylight. The typical sunrise is around 6:30 am, and the sunset is around 4:30 pm.

A view of a modern city with skyscrapers during sunset.

🥶 Late December Weather Conditions in Japan

During the second half of December in Japan, you’ll start experiencing colder and dryer conditions . Here are some averages to know:

  • 🌡️ Average temperature – The average temperature ranges from 38 °F to 53 °F on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto) and 17 °F to 30 °F on the north side (e.g., Sapporo).
  • 🌧️ Rainy days – Late December will continue to see some rainy days (on average, less than four days), but they should lessen as the month progresses.
  • ☀️ Daylight hours – Daylight time drops to 9.5 hours by the end of the month. Sunrise is typically around 7 am, and sunset is around 4:30 pm.

🍀 My Sister’s December Experience in Japan

My sister and her fiance visited Japan during the last ten days of December . They stayed on the south side of the island and went to three different areas: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka .

During their trip, they primarily experienced cold but sunny days . They wore layers, puffer jackets, and some winter accessories (e.g., scarves, warm hats, gloves).

Of the ten days they were there, they experienced rain once in Kyoto for one to two hours.

This 10-day Japan itinerary combines visiting Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo with two epic adventures.

Two couples wearing winter jackets and long pants standing in front a gold gate door.

❄️ Does It Snow in Japan in December?

Whether you’ll get snow in Japan in December varies by region.

Snow is rare on the south side (e.g., Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka). Even if you get a bit of it, it rarely sticks.

In comparison, snow is common on the north side (e.g., Hokkaido). Snowfall can start as early as late October and will stick around until as late as April.

Hokkaido becomes a  winter wonderland  in November. However, the popular Sapporo Snow Festival occurs in early February every year.

Is December a Good Time to Travel to Japan?

Japan is a great place to visit year-round, as every season and month offers something different in terms of activities, special events, and weather.

That said, December is not the most popular time to visit Japan, which means that there are both advantages and disadvantages to visiting during that month.

👍🏻 Upsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in the month of December has a few upsides:

1. Japan lights up in December.

Japan has a tradition of decorating its streets and buildings with lights during the winter months. The major cities are known for their impressive light displays and elaborate winter illuminations.

December is a  particularly festive month with Christmas and New Year’s Eve . While Japan celebrates Christmas, it’s seen as a festive and commercial event, not a religious one like in the United States.

A city decorated with winter lights.

2. December is typically less crowded (with an exception).

Tourist attractions that are generally overcrowded and have long lines during peak season are more manageable in December .

The exception is the week of Christmas and New Year’s Eve when domestic travel and tourism pick up. When my sister visited Osaka around this time, popular places like Dotonbori were packed.

Japan’s  peak tourist seasons  are when the cherry blossoms bloom in late March to early April, and autumn foliage appears from late October to early December.

3. December is a perfect time to enjoy the onsens.

Japan is famous for its onsens (natural hot springs). December’s cold weather makes it an ideal time to take a dip in the onsens.

In contrast, the weather was still hot when I visited in September, so I sometimes felt  overly warm in an onsen .

See what visiting Japan is like in September .

A tranquil Japanese-style building with some trees.

4. December is a great time for winter sports.

Hokkaido in the north is renowned for its ideal conditions for winter sports . December is a fantastic time to visit the region to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, ice skate, and more.

🍀 My Sister’s Positive Experience With Visiting in December

My sister and her fiance enjoyed the festive light decorations while walking around Japan in December. The streets of Harajuku in Tokyo and Dontobori in Osaka were adorned with lights, giving the cities a cheerful atmosphere.

They also experienced fewer crowds the week before Christmas , and the crowd noticeably increased the last week when more locals were traveling and celebrating. Tokyo’s teamLab, which is usually a zoo, was significantly less crowded.

One of the best things about visiting Japan in December is eating warm winter food , including udon, ramen, and Japanese barbeque. They are incredibly delicious in the cold weather.

A bowl with marbled pork, noodles, and mushrooms.

👎🏻 Downsides of Visiting Japan in December

Visiting Japan in December also has a few downsides:

1. December is not the time for fall foliage or cherry blossoms.

If you are lucky, you might see some orange in early December. But in general, you will  miss the cherry blossoms  and maybe see some fall foliage.

In December, the surrounding trees will mostly be either green or bare , so it’s not the best time for parks and gardens.

A park with yellow grass and some bare trees with a city behind it.

2. The weather is cold.

The weather in December is cold, with nights dipping into the 30s °F . This will make being outside more challenging, especially if you plan to wait in long lines at popular restaurants and attractions.

Hiking Mount Fuji is a bucket list item for some people, but it’s closed during the winter season.

People walking on the streets of Japan wearing winter coats.

3. Some businesses will be closed around New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve is a culturally significant celebration for Japanese people, so more business and service closures will occur during that timeframe.

🍀 My Sister’s Negative Experience With Visiting in December

My sister’s and her fiance’s biggest disappointment with visiting Japan in December was how bare all the trees and surrounding gardens were. Ueno Park in Tokyo, for example, was underwhelming, without any leaves or cherry blossoms .

Also, they ate at some very popular restaurants that required waits of up to two hours, and the cold made standing outside uncomfortable .

They also noticed that none of the winter shopping sales (e.g., big discounts for cashmere and winter coats) were in effect in December. Most winter sales start in January, so you’ll miss out on those.

5 Great Things To Do in December in Japan

Due to the smaller crowds and light displays, December is a great time to explore major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

If you’re looking for activities that are more specific to December, here are five unique and great things to do in Japan during that month:

1. Catch the Chichibu Night Festival

🏮 Why : The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan’s top three festivals, and it takes place annually in December. This winter festival features intricately decorated floats with lanterns, firework displays, and streets filled with festival food.

📍 Location : Chichibu Night Festival takes place in Chichibu , two-and-a-half hours northwest of Tokyo by train.

🎟️ Admission : Free

🗓️ Timing : Chichibu Night Festival takes place December 2 and 3 annually

2. Enjoy a Dip in an Onsen

♨️ Why : December is an amazing time to enjoy Japan’s numerous hot springs as temperatures drop.

A view of a peaceful, Japanese garden with a private bath.

📍 Location : While hot springs can be found virtually anywhere in Japan, the town of  Hakone  is particularly known for them. Hakone is known for its geothermal activity and stunning natural landscapes.

If you want to be further north, Zao Onsen is another famous hot spring area that gets snow. The nearby Mount Zao is known for an interesting weather phenomenon called snow monsters.

🎟️ Admission : The cost of an onsen is determined by several factors. A budget-friendly public onsen can be as cheap as $2, and a luxury private onsen can go for over $100.

🗓️ Timing : Onsens are available year-round. Japanese people enjoy them at almost any time of the day.

Another great way to warm up during winter is by eating  seasonal cuisine  like nabe (hot pot). Nabe is a winter dish with seafood, meat, tofu, and vegetables. Japanese convenience stores also start serving hot snacks and beverages .

3. See a Winter Illumination

✨ Why : The Winter season in Japan is known for its impressive display of winter illuminations. Some of the most impressive illuminations are:

  • Sagamiko Illumillion – one of the largest displays of light.
  • Sendai Pageant of Starlight – showcases hundreds of trees covered in LED lights.
  • Ashikaga Flower Fantasy – includes a music-synchronized light show.
  • Osaka Hikari Renaissance – lights up several of Osaka’s historic buildings.

🎟️ Admission : The illuminations mentioned above range from free admission to $15 USD.

🗓️ Timing : Many illuminations start in October and November and go until the end of the year.

4. Visit Shirakawa-go

⛰️ Why : Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has a village known for its traditional centuries-old farmhouses that look spectacular during the winter months when it snows. It’s the perfect place to see snowy landscapes near Tokyo.

📍 Location : Shirakawa-go is in the remote mountains of Gifu Prefecture in central Japan. One way to see it is with a knowledgeable local guide .

🎟️ Admission : The village has no admission fee, but you may want to take a guided tour.

🗓️ Timing : The Gifu Prefecture typically starts receiving snow in mid-December. The heavy snowfall begins in January.

5. Do a Winter Sport

⛷️ Why : Japan boasts ideal winter conditions for many winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and ice skating.

📍 Location : Hokkaido , Nagano , or Niigata are known for excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. They’re some of Japan’s best places to visit during the winter season.

December in Japan’s Majors Cities: Tips and Firsthand Experience

If you’re concerned about the December weather in Japan and how the cold may impact your travel plans, below are my sister’s and her fiance’s first-hand experiences of visiting in December 2023.

The weather didn’t drastically change their itinerary, but it did influence it.

🗓️ December in Tokyo

My sister and her fiance were in Tokyo for five days. It was consistently in the 40s °F , which didn’t stop them from enjoying some of the city’s outdoor spaces.

That said, while Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden still had some orange and red coloring, Ueon Park was mostly bare and underwhelming, so December can be a hit or miss for how nice the gardens and parks will be.

As you’ll likely spend most of the time indoors, make sure to plan for hot food and great indoor experiences. They enjoyed:

  • Amazing warm food like grilled beef cutlets at Gyukatsu Motomura
  • Exploring the beautiful and immersive teamLab Planets , which was not too crowded and had warm water running that warmed up everyone’s feet
  • Staying indoors and shopping around Ginza
  • Seeing all the festive lights at Omoide Yokocho . This street is also known for bars and izakayas .

Their biggest pro tip is to wear layers in Tokyo in December. Many of the city’s indoor areas, including train stations, malls, shops, and restaurants, blast the heat.

A narrow streets decorated with lights.

December Events and Activities in Tokyo

Tokyo also hosts some special winter events in December:

  • Tokyo Christmas Market – an extravagant market that is only held in December.
  • Tokyo Station – a worthwhile light display that happens in December.
  • Oji Fox Parade – a costume-filled parade around Oji Inari Shine that happens at the end of the year.
  • The Hagoita Fair – a traditional event happening in Asakusa’s Sensoji Temple.
  • Ice skating rings – Many ice skating rinks start popping up around Tokyo, with Midtown Ice Rink being one of the most well-known ones.
  • Tokyo Disneyland – puts up festive decorations and hosts Christmas parades.

🗓️ December in Kyoto

My sister and her fiance were in Kyoto for three days, and the weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., comfortable winter weather ).

Visiting Kyoto in December was great because there were  fewer crowds for famous places like the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which they loved.

A view of red shrines overlooking a city.

The most amazing thing about Kyoto in December was the chance to experience an onsen against the cold winter air. They stayed at Ryokan Rangestu, and highly recommend them.

December Events in Kyoto

Kyoto also hosts some exciting events in December:

  • Yamashina Gishi Matsuri – a parade featuring traditional clothing and armor that takes place on December 14th every year.
  • Shimai Kōbō  – a bustling flea market that attracts both foreign visitors and locals. It’s especially festive and exciting in December.
  • Toji Temple & Hogonin Temple – light up in December, along with other temples.

🗓️ December in Osaka

My sister and her fiance were in Osaka for two days. The weather was consistent with Tokyo’s (i.e., mostly in the 40s °F ).

They spent most of their time in the famous Dotonbori and the popular Osaka Aquarium. The weather did not impact their plans ; they would have gone to both places regardless of whether it was summer or winter.

They also rode the Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel . That was one of the only activities they were concerned about being outside in the cold, but it turns out that the individual capsules are enclosed.

A bright, well-lit long circular ferry wheel with Japanese writing on it.

What to Pack for Japan in December

Remember that you will experience mostly sunny but cold days in December in Japan.

Here are some things to remember to pack for a trip to Japan in December:

  • Winter outer layer – Temperatures will be cold, so bring a winter or puff jacket.

It’s important to bring layers when packing for December, as Japanese shops and restaurants tend to turn up the heat indoors when it’s cold outside.

  • Winter accessories – It can get windy and cloudy on some days, so if you run cold, it’s a good idea to pack warm hats, scarves, earmuffs, and gloves.

If you plan to visit open observation decks, like Shibuya Sky in Tokyo , know that winds can get strong, so you’ll want to bundle up.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – Don’t be afraid to pack hiking shoes if necessary (you’ll see many tourists walking around in them).

I’ve also written on what to pack for outdoor activities in their respective guides: see the Mt. Fuji packing list and the Shimanami Kaido packing list .

To make your travel planning easier , download the trip planner below and use it as a starting point. The planner has country-specific travel information, an itinerary, a packing list, and a map with key places pinned.

The trip planner is built on Notion, which I use for all my travel planning (I genuinely love this tool). If you don’t have Notion, creating an account is free .

Three Notion template screenshots are shown: travel information, itinerary, and map + packing list templates.

Things to do in Japan in December

In December, month of annual celebrations, Japan dresses up with many nocturnal lights, pleasing both children and adults. When students finish their second term exams, Japanese companies organize their end-of-the-year party, called bonenkai , which mostly consists of gathering with colleagues in izakaya pubs to drink.

Tourism statistics

The end of the year has one of the lowest tourist attendances. Most tourists during this period are families coming to spend an enchanting and unique Christmas. You can also find groups of young adults coming to celebrate New Year ’s Eve.

Accommodation and transportation are still busy in December as Japanese people book two to three days at the end of the month to visit their families and escape from the cities to visit countryside towns and mountains .

Climate and weather

December is the first month of winter . Temperatures drop in most regions, though they are not as cold as in January or February . On average, temperatures in Tokyo and Kyoto range from 7 to 12°C (44 to 53°F). Depending on the year, the temperature can be warmer; during the day, the temperature can be around 15°C (59°F), though it can be less than 0°C (32°F) in the mornings. It can also snow, and snow has already settled in Hokkaido or the Japanese Alps by this time.

In the south, Kyushu has a warmer atmosphere that reaches temperatures above 10°C, even during the night, though it also has a higher humidity. Colder weather is usually also drier, meaning a clear blue sky. Even though there isn’t a lot of sun (about 10 hours a day), it is balanced with a stronger intensity, which allows to appreciate beautiful outdoor walks.

National public holidays

In 2019, December 23rd is not a National public holiday anymore. From 2020 on, the Birthday of the Japanese Emperor ( Tenno Tanjobi ) will be celebrated on February 23rd to comply with the new emperor Naruhito’s birthday.

However, note that many stores, restaurants, museums and gardens are closed from December 29th to January 3rd.

Top things to do

Urban tourism offers many attractions. At the beginning of the month, you can still see Japanese maple  🍁 trees, while Christmas lights are already illuminating the city at sunset. Daytime visits can easily continue into the evenings, when end-of-the-year animations cheer up visitors and Japanese people in bars and malls. Note that Christmas in Japan is a commercial celebration, and not a religious one: everything remains open on December 25th.

Here are some activities to plan in December:

Travel packing tips

We recommend bringing typical warm winter clothing to visit Japan in December. Choose a comfortable, warm and flexible coat. Scarves, hats and gloves are essential items for all travelers. You should also bring thick tights, sweaters and warm underwear.

Trains and metros, as well as stores and other indoor shopping centers are largely heated (sometimes too much), while temples remain at outdoor temperatures.

We advise bringing your own usual beauty and skincare products as they are adapted to your skin and guarantee optimal protection against the cold.

He’s been living in Tokyo for about 7 years, and graduated from Temple University, Japan with degrees in economics and international business. He loves traveling of course, but also cooking, snowboarding, some video games as well. His biggest interest is songwriting/music production, more specifically electronic music… (think Skrillex, Marshmello, Daft Punk, etc.) He also has terrible humor as you’ll notice, but he hopes you’ll enjoy it!

Just like it’s a tradition in some countries to decorate your house with lights for Christmas, Japan loves to brighten the night with spectacular winter illuminations , and you can almost be certain to come across some of them if you travel the country during the colder months. There is a plethora of illuminations to choose from – especially in Tokyo – and strolling through a sea of twinkling lights is quite a magical experience.

This incredible feat between architects and electricians lights up the night and attracts millions of visitors every year. The magnificent display is one of the oldest in Japan, and also serves as a memorial for the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. With 100-year-old houses constructed in a distinct style known as “gassho,” the village is steeped in traditional vibes. “Gassho” means “to press one’s hands together in prayer” and refers to the slanted thatched roofs, which are built to withstand the large amount of snow that falls here every winter. There are plenty of restaurants here as well as opportunities to see the interior of the houses, making for a great winter getaway.

Head to Saitama for the Chichibu Night Festival. Featuring huge floats, music, lanterns, and locally made sake , this event is nationally recognized as one of the three great float-centered festivals, also known as hikiyama . Just a few hours from Tokyo, the event takes place every December 2nd and 3rd and is a great chance to kick off the winter in a festive way together with the locals. The large floats, weighing between 10 to 20 tons and carried around by human power, are reason enough to visit this impressive festival!

Christmas in Japan is quite different from the celebrations in western countries, as in Japan it’s a holiday spent with your better half rather than focusing on religion or on opening presents together with your family. Christmas is easily one of the biggest holidays across the world, but it certainly is enjoyed in many different ways, and Tokyo Disney Resort offers one such way to enjoy this festive time. Head to Tokyo Disneyland or Sea between November 8th and December 25th for a heavily Christmas-infused experience.

Dates: November 8 – December 25

new year countdown

New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year where the trains run all night long in Tokyo. There are many different ways to enjoy the countdown to the new year, whether it’s a traditional experience at a shrine, or a nightlife kind of celebration at a club. Either way, there is plenty of fun to be had, and no shortage of positive energy.

Due to its cold climate, Hokkaido is probably one of the most wintery places you can find in Japan. This northernmost prefecture definitely has the most snowfall, so many events are centered around that, making it the perfect place to be immersed in wintery scenery. With its vast amount of stunning nature, it’s a great place to take in breathtaking views of the all-white snowy landscapes. Apart from great skiing and snowboarding opportunities, other ways to enjoy the snow include snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

On a cold winter day, getting warmed up from the inside with a hot meal is simply the best. The cold weather really enhances your appetite, wouldn’t you say? Well, if not, we are sure the sight of Japan’s mouthwatering winter cuisine will do the trick! Dishes such as soups, nabe (hotpot) and sukiyaki are especially popular during this time of the year.

Snow monkeys

Shigakogen is not only an incredible snow sport destination, it’s also home to the Jigokudani Monkey Park . Japanese macaques, an endemic species of monkey, have laid claim to a hot spring tucked away in Nagano ’s mountains, and there is a place where you can observe the monkeys bathing and relaxing in the onsen . There are also a few accomodations quite close to the Jigokudani Monkey Park which offer an outdoor onsen to their guests so you can enjoy a steaming soak surrounded by heaps of snow – just like the monkeys!

We hope one or more of these incredible experiences are up your alley and will help you plan an epic winter trip to Japan. Temperatures can get quite low even in metropolitan areas, especially if it’s windy, so stay warm and enjoy all the great winter fun Japan has to offer!
