Cruise to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de janeiro shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in rio de janeiro.

Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Pick a Beach, Any Beach

Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Disembark your ship, then hop in a taxi to famous Rio beaches like Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon, which make up a long stretch of golden sand (broken up only by the dramatic Arpoador rock, a popular sunset spot) between Copacabana and Ipanema. Or, if you don't want to sip a caipirinha cocktail on any of these people-watching party beaches, head a bit more off the beaten path to suburban Barra da Tijuca, where many events during the 2016 Olympics took place.

Gain Some Perspective

Aerial view of Rio de Janeiro with Christ Redeemer and Corcovado Mountain

Head for the hills — or mountains, to be precise — that surround Rio's picturesque waterfront neighborhoods. Get a bus to the base station of the Corcovado funicular railway, which takes you to the base of Rio's "world wonder" Christ the Redeemer statue. Enjoy that sweeping panorama, then take a taxi to Urca and catch a cable car up the Pão de Açucar (Sugar Loaf) mountain, which offers a view that's slightly more constricted, but every bit as ... well, marvelous.

Escadaria Selaron famous public steps of artist Jorge Selaron in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Trace Overlooked History

Enjoy your time at the beach and in the mountains, but appreciate Rio's history if you can. Ride a taxi or bus to the Lapa Arches, an ancient aqueduct then walk up the colorful Lapa Stairs into Santa Teresa, where you can ride a cable car through this postcard-perfect historical neighborhood. Have sunset cocktails on the rooftop of the Santa Teresa hotel, or walk back down the stairs to Rio's overlooked downtown, where the Theatro Municipal (built in the early 20th century to mimic the Paris Opera) injects a bit of yesterday's Europe into today's South America.

Picanha. Brazilian traditional steak in barbecue.

LOCAL CUISINE

Sit down at a Churrascaria and enjoy succulent cuts of Brazilian beef, pork and lamb sliced tableside by gaucho servers. Or, sit down for a more understated Brazilian meal at Garota de Ipanema, a beach-adjacent cafe where the famous "Girl from Ipanema" song is said to have been written. Enjoy a bite on the beach if you see a beach seller slinging sticks of salty, grilled queijo coalho cheese, which pairs perfectly with caipirinha cocktails made with Brazilian cachaça rum.

Beach vendor selling brightly colored kanga sarongs

Employ one of two shopping strategies in Rio de Janeiro. Head to luxury malls like Shopping Leblon for big-name clothing brands. Otherwise, stop souvenir and sundry sellers who roam the sandy shores of Copacabana and Ipanema, whether for kitschy Christ the Redeemer keychains and paperweights or beach towels emblazoned with the yellow, blue and green Brazilian flag.

Award-Winning Brazil Cruises

On a cruise to Brazil, you’ll find warm, white-sand beaches, big-city excitement, incredible historic sites, and Amazon adventures, all with the style and comfort that Celebrity is known for. Be dazzled by the brilliantly colored costumes of traditional Samba dancers. Get up close to some of the most abundant, and awe-inspiring nature that Brazil is famous for. Sail to bustling, vibrant ports where you’ll be greeted with a welcoming embrace by the hospitable Brazilian people.

Brazil cruises will take you to famous landmarks like Rio’s Christ the Redeemer statue, or the massive São Paulo Cathedral. Enjoy an afternoon on the unspoiled beaches of Ilhabela, or a windsurfing adventure on Armação Beach in Buzios. Learn the secrets of the Samba dance while exploring the cultural treasures of the world’s most famous Carnaval. Find your vacation rhythm and embrace the moment as you embark on a luxury cruise to South America with Celebrity.

Brazil Cruise Highlights

On a cruise to Brazil, you’ll encounter famous beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema. You can also visit Jabaquara Beach in Ilhabela via a schooner, walk along the white sand beaches of Ferradura in Buzios, and lounge on urban Gonzaga Beach, São Paulo, against a backdrop of ultra-modern skyscrapers.

Scenic Lookout Points

Mountainous Brazil is all about jaw-droppingly beautiful views. Two of the most famous are Corcovado and Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro; head up either of these dramatic, conical peaks for vistas of the city and its necklace of golden beaches stretching away below. You can also find picture-perfect views of Santos and its coastline from the top of Monte Serrat Hill, accessed via funicular railway.

Cultural Experiences

Brazil has one of the most unique cultures on earth, and each port in these itineraries is full of opportunities to learn about it and embrace it. From Samba dancing to Afro-Brazilian capoeira shows, a robust cuisine, and big city glamor, you’ll find it all in every Brazil cruise with Celebrity.

Featured Brazil Cruise Ports

Rio de janeiro.

The city most commonly referred to as simply “Rio” has been a global destination for sun, fun, and exuberant Brazilian culture for years. Take an exhilarating ride on a cable car up to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain, a monolithic granite peak with incredible views that cover the bay and bustling city below. See one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado and ride up in the antique train for the best and most scenic experience. Relax with a stroll along the promenade at Ipanema to take in the never-ending activity on one of the world’s most famous beaches.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Brazilian beach experience away from the buzz of the big cities, then the archipelago of Ilhabela may be the perfect fit. On the main island, visit the remote eastern beach of Castelhanos, only accessible by boat or trail. Head inland to discover the wild and wonderful rainforests areas of Ilhabela State Park, and hike the short trails to reach the beautiful Gato and Água Branca waterfalls. Take a break from nature with a short tour of the famous Nossa Senhora d’Ajuda church, painted in colorful blue and white and an attraction to visitors for over 200 years.

Salvador de Bahia

Salvador de Bahia is the capital of Bahia, one of Brazil’s northern states, famous for its African influences, colonial architecture, and being Portugal’s first capital in the Americas. Take a walking tour through the pastel-colored buildings and streets of Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage Site bursting with life, world-class dining, and fantastic boutique shopping. Visit the Farol de Barra fort and lighthouse for great views of the sea and 19th-century fortifications now protected as a national monument to Brazilian heritage and history.

Brazil Cruise Itineraries

On Brazil cruises, you’ll either depart from Fort Lauderdale, Buenos Aires, or Rio de Janeiro. These cruise itineraries may focus on ports along the South American shoreline, or further afield in the Caribbean, or they could be part of a larger transatlantic cruise. Cruises last for nine, 13, or 14 nights, with either two or, on the longest voyages,  eight days at sea.

Itineraries

Why cruise to brazil with celebrity cruises.

A journey on an MSC Cruise is an experience, a chance to discover the natural beauty offered by environmental sanctuaries straight out of an adventure novel: endless white beaches and crystal clear waters . The main coastal cities are real gems waiting to be discovered, explore these cultural melting pots with an MSC excursion : all to the beat of the music.   This is a truly out of the ordinary journey. Enjoy the glittering expanse of Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro  or Praia do Futuro in Fortaleza , delve into the history of Montevideo  and Punta del Este  in Uruguay, lose yourself amongst the colonial style palaces of the Argentinian quarter of San Telmo in Buenos Aires .    Because South America, a lively land bursting with contradiction, should be experienced to the very maximum.

São Paulo Port Guide

Though Rio de Janeiro gets the credit as the cultural heart of Brazil, a stop in São Paulo on a South American cruise won’t disappoint travelers looking for a buzzy, cosmopolitan, and simultaneously artsy city. São Paulo is more than Brazil’s financial district, though its bustling industries certainly deserve their soaring skyscrapers. It’s also a foodie paradise that offers nearly every kind of cuisine. The romantic, colonial-style historic district and some of the best art and cultural institutions in the world are traveler favorites.

On one of our São Paulo cruises, don’t miss museums like the Pinacoteca or the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, both of which embody the city’s art scene. Stop to peer at Edifício Copan, one of the city’s oldest and most beloved buildings. Sports lovers have to check out the Museu do Futebol, a museum completely devoted to soccer and the way the sport has shaped Brazilian culture. Stand in awe of Brazilian soccer prodigy Pelé at a dedicated exhibit, or take a guided tour to learn more about the sport than ever before. Coffee enthusiasts have to tour the Museu do Cafe, which even includes barista classes and samples of the area’s signature espresso.

It’s a perfect afternoon activity for families and soccer fans alike.

Sampa happens to be one of Brazil’s best cities, known for creative endeavors, museums and the arts, and incredible food.

São Paulo is also known as the financial heart of Brazil, where commerce and big industries are welcomed. São Paulo was settled in the 15th century by Jesuits, and the city has retained much of its colonial and Gothic architecture and influence even in modern day. Today, over 12 million people live in the area, and the city is a melting pot of immigrants and people from all over the world that call São Paulo home.

São Paulo (Santos) Port Facilities & Location

Taxis are very common here, and you shouldn’t have trouble flagging one down, even during peak times. Just be sure to watch the meter, since most taxi drivers swear by their meter. Uber is also available in the city now. Bike rentals are popular for tourists because the city has dedicated bike lanes all the way from the downtown historic district to the beach.

Woman dancing in colourful red and yellow costumes, with headdresses at the Rio carnival in Brazil

Everything in Brazil is bigger, brighter and bolder – from the waterfalls and jungles to the street parties and beaches. It’s no wonder there’s always a festival.

Brazilians are famous for their zest for life. The country is loaded with incredible natural attractions – the Amazon, roaring Iguazu Falls and jungle-clad mountains where you feel on top of the world (much like Christ the Redeemer). And let’s not forget Brazil’s infectious music – from samba and bossa nova to Afro-Brazilian beats – and a party to be had around every corner. And of course the pumping beaches, where you can play football until the sun dips low behind Corcovado.   Brazil   is your cue to pick up a caipirinha and join the fun.

Best time to visit brazil.

In most parts of Brazil, temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, regardless of the season. The summer months between December and February can be hot and humid, bringing temperatures to the high 30s – perfect weather to enjoy Brazil’s famous beaches. It’s also festival season, so it’s well worth visiting during this time.

Rainfall varies greatly around Brazil so depending on where you’re traveling, you could experience some rain. Around the Pantanal, Manaus and the Amazon basin, expect patches of rain all year round. Rio and the areas around Foz de Iguacu don’t have distinct rainy seasons and are typically drier than some other areas of Brazil.

The south of Brazil experiences extreme seasonal changes, so pack accordingly.

Culture and customs

Brazilians are universally known for their infectious enthusiasm and lust for life. The wild celebratory atmosphere of Carnaval isn’t a one-off —impromptu street parties, heaving nightclubs and busy dance halls all display the same vibrant energy and passion all year round. Travelers will find that music, dance and good times are all passionately pursued by most Brazilians, regardless of income, gender or age. But it doesn’t stop there. Fun is not limited to the dynamic bars and clubs of the big cities - the natural world is also enjoyed by most Brazilians. With so many spectacular beaches, national parks, mountains and forests, there are plenty of places for Brazilians to enjoy their favorite past times – football, surfing, swimming, hiking, volleyball and capoeira (a Brazilian blend of martial arts and dance). Brazilians are also known for being one of the most open, friendly and affectionate nationalities – personal space isn’t regarded as highly in Brazil as in most other countries, so expect to be hugged and kissed by new and old friends when traveling here.

In contrast to the exuberant, modern life that Brazil's city dwellers live, are the humble, traditional ways of the indigenous tribes that live in the Amazon and surrounds. Despite modern advances, many still live off the land – hunting for wild animals and gathering fruit and berries - although sadly this is rapidly changing due to deforestation and urbanization. In the face of this, many tribes still cling to their ancient culture through traditional clothing, dance and song.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Brazil’s major cities feature a wide range of international cuisine, so it’s possible to eat a western-style breakfast, Mexican for lunch and Italian for dinner, with a few traditional Brazilian snacks in between. For an in-depth look at what you can eat in Brazil, visit our   South American food guide .

Things to try in Brazil

1. Churrasco

This traditional Brazilian barbecue is a true pleasure for meat eaters. Beef, pork, chicken, duck, lamb and fish are all skewered and cooked to perfection over hot coals, creating a smoky flavor and tender texture.

Brazil’s coastline is home to a bounty of marine life so when on the coast, be sure to eat seafood while it’s at its freshest. Fried baby octopus, king prawns and fragrant, seafood stew are great options.

3. Feijoada

This stew of beans and beef is Brazil’s national dish, and reflects its rich immigrant history. The flavors and style are a mix of African, Indian and Portuguese food traditions, making it a direct culinary link to Brazil’s past.

4. Caipirinha

This refreshing cocktail made from cachaca (a spirit derived from sugar cane), sugar, crushed ice and lime is the Brazilian national drink, and the perfect accompaniment to a beachside sunset.

Brazil has plenty of tropical fruits and berries – so for a quick snack, head to the markets and buy fresh bananas, limes, oranges, guava, jackfruit and acai berries.

Geography and environment

Being the fifth largest country in the world, Brazil shares land borders with many other countries including   Venezuela , Guyana,   Colombia ,   Peru ,   Bolivia , Paraguay,   Argentina , Uruguay, Suriname and French Guiana. Home to many different landscapes and ecosystems, Brazil’s natural environment is one of the most famous in the world. From the steamy tropical rainforest that surrounds the Amazon River and the swirling torrents of white water at Iguazu Falls, to the stunning beaches, reefs and islands of the coast, Brazil is certainly blessed with the very best of Mother Nature. Home to many of the world's most rare and endangered species, travelers will be able to see the full spectrum of colorful bird life, curious mammals, gigantic snakes and unique marine life.

With such a large population, Brazil’s major cities are busy, crowded and chaotic. It can take some getting used to, but once you’re working with the flow of the Brazilian way of life, you’ll begin to enjoy the pace. With a widening gap between the rich and the poor, housing can vary from large mansions in upscale neighborhoods and modern apartments right in the heart of the city, to humble tin sheds in the sprawling favelas. In some ways, Brazil’s major cities are full of contrasts but the universal appeal of partying, dancing and drinking seems to cross all cultural and social barriers.

History and government

Early history.

Indigenous tribes inhabited Brazil for centuries before the arrival of the first European settlers from Portugal in the 1500s. Colonization brought agriculture and crop growing to Brazil, resulting in extensive land clearing which dispossessed much of the indigenous population. The growing of sugar cane resulted in an influx of new residents, mainly slaves who brought rich African traditions with them. Remnants of this can still be seen in much of today’s music, dance and food. By the 19th century, coffee had taken the place of sugar as Brazil’s most valuable crop. The increase in coffee production brought a new wave of migrants to Brazil, mainly from Europe, and Brazil’s economy continued to flourish until the military coup of 1889.

Recent history

Brazil’s more recently history has also been characterized by wide spread immigration – especially during and after World War II - with large numbers of Jewish people choosing to flee persecution to live in Brazil, as well as significant numbers of people from the Middle East and other European countries.

In 1989, Brazil held its first democratic election in almost 30 years after decades of military rule. More recently, a stable government has resulted in increased economic prosperity, although many of Brazil’s residents are still impoverished, living well below the poverty line.

Top 10 beach spots of Brazil

1. praia do rosa.

The big surf and relaxed vibe of this hip holiday haven in Southern Brazil makes it a firm favorite with visitors and locals alike. Praia do Rosa manages to balance development with tradition - elegant small-scale hotels and eco-lodges provide the perfect place to rest after hiking, whale watching or surfing.

The cosmopolitan charms of this world-famous beach make it popular with people from all walks of life. Expect to see enthusiastic travelers, smug millionaires, bohemian artists and indifferent locals all enjoying Ipanema’s magnetic magic.

3. Jericoacoara

Far away from the showy extravagance of Rio lies this secluded spot only accessible by 4x4. Strictly protected from overdevelopment, the slow pace suits the windsurfers and kite surfers who prefer to get their thrills from the ocean's wild tides.

4. Lopes Mendes

This beach, located on the island of Ilha Grande, is considered one of Brazil’s best. The killer combination of fine white sand, great waves and clear, blue water guarantee perfect conditions for swimming, surfing and sun-worshipping.

5. Canoa Quebrada

This mellow hippie haven boasts stunning sand dunes and a deep blue-green sea. Horse riding on the dunes at sunset or cruising the coast on an old fishing boat are great ways to make the most of this picture perfect piece of Brazil.

Put on the world map by Bridget Bardot back in the 1960s, Buzios is the epitome of Brazilian sophistication. The designer boutiques, glam hotels and cool bars attract the celebrity jet set – but it’s the beautiful bays and beaches that are the true superstars of Buzios.

7. Copacabana

One of the world’s most famous urban beaches, Copacabana, is a top spot to indulge in a bit of people watching. Watch an eclectic mix of people play football, work on their tans and strut their stuff on this busy meeting spot that attracts all walks of life.

8. Praia da Mole

Soft white sand for lazing in the sun and a year-round supply of waves for surfing make this beach in Florianopolis a top pick. Paragliding, wakeboarding and other water sports provide more thrills, while the nearby bars and clubs ensure good times when the sun goes down.

9. Maragogi

Found on the Coral Coast of Brazil, Maragogi’s calm waters offer some respite from the big breaks found on many other Brazilian beaches. Colorful offshore reefs make snorkeling or scuba diving a must for visitors looking for aquatic adventures.

10. Tambaba

One for the free spirits of the world, Brazil’s only official nudist beach is flanked by steep, dramatic cliffs and dotted with swaying coconut palms. Choose to get cheeky and take advantage of lying on Brazil’s only sanctioned nudist beach in all your glory, or keep your kit on and stick to the “non-naturist” side.

Brazil’s two largest cities – Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – offer a wide range of shopping opportunities, from high-end designer shops to independent boutiques and everything in between. Every mid-sized city will have at least one ‘shopping’ (what Brazilians call their shopping malls), but as you move to more rural and remote areas, your best bet is the local market.

Shopping tips in Rio

Peddlers roam Rio’s beaches offering an enormous range of items including footballs, bathing suits and jewelry. Be aware that the price might be good but the quality likely isn’t. For better quality bikinis and swim trunks, consider heading to Blue Man, Brazil’s most successful beachwear label. Or visit Barra Shopping, one of the largest malls in South America, which boasts more than 570 stores, a movie theatre, a bowling alley and a range of restaurants and bars. Rio also hosts a number of popular markets including the Hippie Fair in Ipanema, where more than 700 vendors sell one-of-a-kind jewelry, clothing, leather shoes, paintings and gourmet goods each Sunday. Like many markets, bargaining is accepted.

Responsible travel tip

You may come across goods made from the skins of protected species (such as reptiles or wild cats). Keeping with Intrepid’s commitment to responsible travel, please refrain from supporting any business that exploit or abuse endangered animals.

Festivals and events in Brazil

Rio carnival.

Colorful, raucous and hedonistic, there’s a reason Rio’s Carnival is one of the best-known parties in the world. The parade of elaborate floats and colorful, bejeweled dancers in barely-there costumes dancing to samba may be the main event, but the revelry begins a whole month before. Each February in the lead up to Lent, the caipirinhas are free-flowing as clubs hold glitzy parties and bandas (street parties also called blocos) take over the streets.

Parintins Folklore Festival (Bumba-mei-boi)

An annual spectacle that commemorates a legend about a pregnant woman’s craving for bull tongue, the murder of a bull to satisfy said craving, and the bull’s magical resurrection. Two teams retell the myth and attempt to outdo each other using flamboyant song and dance routines, colorful costumes and giant floats. Spectators cheer and moo to performances at this three-day June celebration.

Festa Junina

This nationwide festival held each June celebrates saints John the Baptist, Anthony and Peter, but celebrations in the north-east take on a distinctly country flair. People flock to rural fairs wearing straw hats and plaid shirts to feast on corn and sweet treats, play games and dance the quadrilha (similar to a square dance).

Rio New Year’s Eve

Join two million revelers decked in white at Copacabana beach for a unique New Year’s celebration. Before the concerts and massive fireworks display begins, Candomble worshippers (an Afro-Brazilian religion) push boats filled with flowers and other offerings into the sea in exchange for safe sailing in the upcoming year.

Amazon River Cruise during Sunset

Brazil Amazon River Cruises

Brazil Amazon River cruises vary from small expedition style trips that go deep into the rainforest to larger vessels offering short two or three night cruises along the Brazilian Amazon. Brazil boasts the lion’s share of the Amazon Rainforest, and there are many cruise options here. The majority start in Manaus and include a visit to the Meeting of the Waters where the rivers Negro and Solimoes meet, which is where Brazilians consider the river becomes the Amazon. Typically on a Brazil Amazon River cruise, you’ll make regular trips into the forest. Hike through the rainforest, canoe down small tributaries, and visit indigenous villages. See trees draped in orchids and bromeliads. Go out at night in search of caiman. Sip a caipirinha while enjoying the natural beauty and tranquility of the Brazilian Amazon. A cruise is easily combined with other destinations in Brazil such as a tour of Rio de Janeiro , wildlife watching in the Pantanal and a trip to the Iguazu Falls . More River Amazon cruise options can be found in Ecuador and Peru . Update: Brazil Covid-19 Travel – Brazil is open for travel again! Brazil reopened to tourists several months ago and we’re delighted to be operating trips again!

MSC Sets Sail for Success in Brazil, Welcoming Over 670,000 Guests

  • April 12, 2024

MSC Musica

MSC Cruises is celebrating a successful 2023-24 season in Brazil.

During a recent event held onboard the MSC Seaview, the company highlighted its local program in the region, as well as an increase in its sourcing operation in the country.

According to Adrian Ursilli, MSC Cruises Country Manager in Brazil, a total of 670,000 guests boarded the ships during the 2023-24 season.

The figure includes foreign guests who arrived in the country onboard MSC ships, in addition to Brazilian passengers who boarded the company’s vessels in both South America and international destinations.

“It is with great enthusiasm and gratitude that I see these extraordinary achievements. The 2023-24 season was a period of notable growth and, above all, of strengthening our work and partnerships,” said Ursilli.

According to Ursilli, the season was the largest in the company’s history and included a total of seven ships.

While five vessels served the Brazilian market, another two called on the country too.

Departing from Argentina and Uruguay, the MSC Musica sailed to a variety of South American destinations on a regular basis.

One of the highlights of the season, the MSC Poesia visited the country during MSC’s 2024 World Cruise.

The operation marked the company’s debut on the Amazon River , with visits to new destinations in the region.

Among the vessels serving the Brazilian market was the MSC Grandiosa, which became the largest cruise ship ever to sail in South America .

The vessel, along with the MSC Seaview, the MSC Preziosa, the MSC Lirica and the MSC Armonia helped drive high satisfaction from the local guests, Ursilli said.

“We deployed state-of-the-art ships to the country. But also very diverse and varied itineraries, for all types of clients,” he added.

Sailing from six different homeports, MSC offered over 150 cruises to over 20 destinations in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. After starting in late October , the local season runs through mid-April.

MSC also had15 full-ship charters, celebrated 69 marriages onboard and embarked over 670 affinity groups.

INTERNATIONAL AGENDA

Tourism Minister leads talks to attract more cruises to Brazil

Turismo.png

Photo: Lívia Nascimento.

Expanding the presence of cruises along Brazil's almost 8,000 km of coastline all year round. It is with this mission that the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, has landed in Miami, United States, where he will be taking part in Seatrade Cruise Global from Tuesday, April 9. The event is the main exhibition for companies and organizations looking to do business with the international cruise industry.

"We have a coastline with some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world and our aim is to boost the cruise industry. The Brazilian delegation's participation in this event is precisely with a view to publicizing new route possibilities in Brazil, as well as identifying existing bottlenecks so that we can stimulate this market, both internally and externally," explained Tourism Minister Celso Sabino.

The 2023/2024 Brazilian cruise season, which ends this month, is expected to be the best of the last decade. The segment is expected to inject BRL 5.1 billion into the country's economy and generate 80,000 jobs. There are a total of 203 itineraries involving dozens of national destinations, as well as more than 840,000 beds for passengers.

"The effort we have made to attract investment in the sector, including the cruise segment, contributes strongly to increasing the number of jobs in our country, promoting social inclusion through tourism, which is good for everyone," concluded Sabino.

During the agenda, the minister met with the CEOs of MSC Cruises, Gianni Onorato, and Costa Cruises, Mario Zanetti, to present new itinerary possibilities to be developed in Brazil and explain the measures being promoted by the government to increase the competitiveness of the segment.

"Minister Celso Sabino is the first tourism minister to come to this event, which shows that cruises are a priority for the federal government, which recognizes the full potential of our segment for the Brazilian economy and how we can contribute to job creation," said the president of Clia Brasil.

STAND - Brazil is present at the event with a 111 square meter stand and the presence of 15 co-exhibitors, including Píer Mauá and the states of Ceará, São Paulo, Bahia, Alagoas and Amazonas.

Spain to deport dozens of cruise passengers after removing them from ship

Spain will on Thursday deport more than 60 Bolivians who arrived last week by cruise ship in the northeastern port of Barcelona but were not allowed to disembark because their visas were false.

The Spanish government’s office in Barcelona said 65 of the 69 Bolivians who arrived will be flown to the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz. The plane will be paid for by MSC Cruises , which owns the ship in which they arrived from Brazil .

Four members of a family with Spanish relatives will be allowed to enter Spain.

Spanish authorities said the Bolivian passengers had false visas to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries.

The Bolivians’ visa problems meant that the cruise ship with more than 1,000 passengers was stuck for two days in Barcelona and unable to continue on its route in the Mediterranean Sea until the situation was resolved.

The cruise ship set sail after the Bolivians were temporarily accommodated in another boat while police interviewed them.

MSC Cruises said last week the Bolivian passengers’ documentation appeared correct upon boarding in Brazil.

MSC Armonia, with more than 1,000 passengers reportedly on board, plans to sail to Italy on Thursday, the cruise company said.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press on Wednesday she had received reports that some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said.

Spain ’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil ” but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.

Green Bay Packers to face Philadelphia Eagles in first NFL game in Brazil

Game in são paulo will take place friday night of week 1, marking green bay’s second international appearance.

Green-Bay-Packers-Brazil-Announcement-Graphic-16x9.2

The NFL announced today that the Green Bay Packers will face the Philadelphia Eagles this season in a Week 1 matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, in the first-ever regular season game in South America.

The game, which will take place on Friday, Sept. 6, will kick off the season for the Packers and marks Green Bay's second international regular-season appearance, following the team's game in 2022 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

"We're looking forward to being a part of this historic matchup against the Eagles in São Paulo," said Packers President/CEO Mark Murphy. "We're excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers. We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we're proud to be part of the league's continued global growth."

First announced in December, the matchup will take place at the Corinthians Arena. The venue is home to Brazilian soccer team the SC Corinthians and hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The game will also be the first time the NFL has played a game on Friday night of opening weekend in over 50 years (Cardinals at Rams, Sept. 18, 1970).

"As global growth continues to be a critical and strategic priority for the NFL and its 32 clubs, we are thrilled to have the Green Bay Packers playing against the Philadelphia Eagles in our first-ever game in South America," said Gerrit Meier, NFL managing director and head of international. "With over 35 million passionate fans in Brazil, the Friday night 2024 regular season opener in São Paulo will bring an incredible energy – marking a historic moment for our sport internationally."

As the Eagles were designated to host the game, the matchup will be considered a road game for the Packers. Because visiting teams typically do not receive a ticket allotment for Season Ticket Holders, tickets to the game are not currently available to purchase through the Packers . Ticket packages will be available through On Location, the Official Hospitality Partner of the NFL, at https://onlocationexp.com/packersbrazil . If an opportunity becomes available for Packers Season Ticket Holders to purchase tickets through the team, the Packers will share details as they become available. For news about the 2024 São Paulo game and to receive ticket information from the NFL, sign up here .

The NFL also announced recently that Peacock (NBCUniversal) has secured the rights to exclusively stream the game. In keeping with a long-standing NFL policy, the game will be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing teams as well as on mobile devices with NFL+.

With the game in South America, the NFL will have played a game (preseason or regular season) in five of the seven continents around the world. Prior to the Packers' trip to London in 2022, the team previously played internationally during the preseason on three occasions: in Toronto in 1997, Tokyo in 1998 and Winnipeg in 2019. The game in Brazil is part of the 2024 NFL International Games, with four previously announced games taking place in Europe. For more on NFL International, visit nfl.com/international/ .

The rest of the Packers 2024 schedule will be announced later this spring and will feature nine regular-season home games and one preseason home game hosted at Lambeau Field.

As previously announced, the Gold package will receive the ninth regular-season game this year, the first year the ninth game will be hosted at Lambeau Field. Green package Season Ticket Holders will receive their typical allotment of regular-season games (six) and will also receive this year's preseason game. The next time Lambeau Field hosts the ninth game, the Green package will receive the ninth game and the Gold package will receive the preseason game. More information about how the 17-game NFL schedule and international game schedule impacts Season Ticket Holders is available at packers.com/tickets .

What to know about packers' international game in brazil in 2024, share this article.

The Green Bay Packers will open the 2024 regular season with an international game in Brazil.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Packers’ Week 1 trip:

Where is the game?

Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil. This will be the first-ever regular season NFL game in South America. São Paulo is the most populous city in Brazil, the most populous country in South America. The stadium is home of Sport Club Corinthians, a professional soccer team in the highest tier of Brazilian soccer. It hosted six games in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 10 games in 2016 Olympic Games. The arena has a seating capacity of roughly 47,000 but can be expanded to over 60,000.

Who will the Packers play?

The Philadelphia Eagles, who finished 11-6 and made the playoffs in the NFC last season. Nick Sirianni’s team has made the playoffs each of the last three seasons, including as the NFC East champion in 2022. The Eagles started 10-1 last season but lost six of their final seven games, including a wild card round loss to the Buccaneers. Center Jason Kelce retired, running back DeAndre Swift left for the Bears and edge rusher Hasson Reddick was traded to the Jets, but the Eagles added running back Saquan Barkley and edge rusher Bryce Huff in free agency.

When is the game?

Friday, Sept. 6, or one day after the NFL regular season opens. The time of kickoff is TBD, but it is expected to be a primetime night game. More details will be known when the full schedule is released in the coming weeks.

Who will broadcast the game?

The game will be shown normally in local markets in Green Bay and Philadelphia. For everyone else, the game will be streamed exclusively on Peacock via NBC. Plans start at $5.99/month.

Is this a home or road game for the Packers?

This is a designated road game for the Packers. The Eagles are the home team. As a result, the Packers will play nine home games, seven true road games and one neutral site game in 2024. Green Bay will also avoid playing the Eagles in Philadelphia.

Why in Brazil?

The NFL is attempting to expand the game of Amercian football internationally. The league believes Brazil has 35 million or more NFL fans, and the Packers are one of the most popular teams in the country. The NFL will also hold games in the United Kingdom and Germany in 2024.

Why in Week 1?

Having an international game to open the season might be easier on teams than during the middle of the season. Teams get a week off between the final preseason game and the start of the regular season, and the Week 1 showdown in Brazil will be played on a Friday night. Both the Packers and Eagles will have ample time for travel and adjustment on both sides of the trip. Expect the Packers and Eagles to have home games in Week 2.

When is the last time the Packers opened at home?

It’s been a while! In fact, Matt LaFleur has never opened a season at home as the Packers coach. The last time the Packers played at Lambeau Field in Week 1 was 2018 (24-23 win over Bears).

Is this the Packers’ first international game?

No, the Packers played in London during the 2022 regular season, marking the team’s first international regular season game. Matt LaFleur’s team lost to the New York Giants at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Green Bay also previously played preseason games in Winnipeg, Tokyo and Toronto.

Green Bay Packers fans in Brazil thrilled to have game in São Paulo, saying: 'We will be WILD'

cruises of brazil

Marcus Rovere of the Packers Brasil fan site gives fair warning about the Green Bay Packers playing the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo: "Prepare yourself, we will be WILD in this game."

The Packers and Eagles will play Sept. 6 at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo. It is the first NFL game in South America and the season opener for both teams, who will each play their second regular-season international game.

Rovere, who lives in Porto Alegre, estimates there are 5 million Packers fans in Brazil, with more than 23,000 following their @PackersBR account on Twitter, now called X. The NFL estimates there are more than 35 million football fans in the country. The Packers and New England Patriots are thought to be the most popular teams.

"Soccer is very popular here, and our teams are just like the Packers. We don't have an owner; the team belongs to the fans! Of course, being a winning team is a fact, too. People here are crazy about the NFL and even without playing in a Super Bowl in last 13 seasons, we still have a lot of new (Packers) fans every year," Rovere wrote Wednesday morning to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, after the announcement was made.

Arena Corinthians, also known as NeoQuimica Arena, is home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians and hosted both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The stadium has a capacity of about 47,000.

"The expectation is a crowded arena for the game," said João Storer of Florianópolis. "São Paulo is the best city for this event, and for sure NeoQuimica Arena is the best Brazilian stadium. I’ve visited the stadium three times; it has a huge outside space for other events and tailgating."

Because of the stadium's size — Lambeau Field's capacity is 81,000 — tickets are expected to be at a premium.

"The only concern that we have are the ticket prices," said Storer, who hopes to find a Packers watch party near home if he can't secure a ticket.

Visiting teams — which the Packers are for this contest — typically do not receive a ticket allotment for season ticket holders, so tickets are not available through the Packers. Ticket packages will be available through On Location, an official partner of the NFL, at onlocationexp.com/packersbrazil .

Event USA in Ashwaubenon also is taking deposits for travel packages to the game, which company President Dennis Garrity said are in limited supply. The company provided packages to about 800 Packers fans for the game in London in 2022.

"Regrettably, we're not going to be able to offer that much space this year, so we believe we will have a sellout quite quickly," Garrity said.

The flight to São Paulo is longer than to London, but the time zones are more forgiving. All of South America is east of Michigan, but São Paulo is only two hours ahead of Green Bay when daylight savings time is active in the United States.

With a population of 12.3 million, São Paulo is 1.5 times larger than New York or London, as populous as all of Illinois, and more than twice the size of Wisconsin. It has 50 times more residents than Brown County, and Metro São Paulo is 3,000 square miles, compared to Brown County's 530.

"São Paulo is a New York-stylish city," Rovere said. Like New York, São Paulo is a financial hub. It is the most important city in South America because of that, he said.

"It has some incredible museums, huge parks, one of the best restaurants in world and many nice people," he said.

As with any large tourist city, visitors need to be aware of their surroundings. "Don't trust everyone, keep things in a pocket, don't walk alone and do some research about where you will be and the best transport options," he said.

Rovere expects attendance at the game will heavily favor the Packers.

"We know that is gonna feel like a home game for the Packers," Rovere said.

A cruise ship stuck in Barcelona resumes sailing after passengers accused of having fake visas were removed and investigated by authorities

  • A cruise ship carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck in Barcelona because of a visa dispute.
  • Spanish authorities suspected that the visas of 69 Bolivian passengers were fake.
  • The passengers are being held on another boat while authorities investigate.

Insider Today

A cruise ship carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck in port in Barcelona after Spanish authorities investigated 69 Bolivian passengers.

The police believed that the Bolivian passengers' visas were fake and are investigating, Spanish police authorities told news agency Efe .

The MSC Armonia cruise ship set off from Brazil and was due to continue through the Mediterranean, with some passengers switching over in Barcelona, Efe reported.

The delay has meant that planned stops in France, Greece, and Croatia have been canceled which has caused some disgruntled passengers to leave the boat early, Reuters reported.

Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers. However, the ship had to stay in port until the situation was resolved.

In a statement shared with Business Insider, MSC Cruises confirmed that the cruise would resume sailing on Thursday.

"Thanks to the cooperation with the Spanish authorities, the group of Bolivian guests has been disembarked and will now follow the immigration process as required by law. We are fully assisting with this process," they said.

The spokesperson confirmed that the passengers' visas were found to be not valid for entry and that the Spanish authorities are investigating.

The passengers' will be held on another boat while Spanish authorities decide whether they will be deported or granted asylum, Reuters reported, citing the government's regional delegation in Catalonia.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told the AP that she had received reports that some of the Bolivian passengers had been duped into obtaining fake visas.

MSC Cruises is one of the world's largest cruise lines, known for its long luxury trips that can set sail for months at a time.

Its new four-month-long world cruise, which will set off in 2026, is expected to cost passengers between $15,800 and $38,210 per person, depending on their cabin.

A cruise ship carrying hundreds of passengers is stuck in the port of Barcelona after a group of Bolivian passengers were found to have visa issues, according to officials.

Authorities said 69 Bolivians are not being allowed to leave the liner as they do not have valid documents to enter the EU's border-free Schengen area.

There are some 1,500 passengers on board the luxury MSC Armonia, which had set sail from Brazil and was to continue through the Mediterranean Sea to Croatia.

Spanish government officials in Barcelona said they were in contact with Bolivian authorities and MSC Cruises to resolve the situation.

The Bolivians on board included families and children, MSC Cruises said in a statement.

It said: "The passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil.

"We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination."
