China is all about numbers. 8,000 life-sized Terra Cotta Warriors. 3,750 miles of the Great Wall of China. 21 million people in the country’s massive capital, Beijing – a truly 21st century city. A nation with 5,000 years of history still tops lists as one of the most attractive travel destinations in the world. From the rice paddies-turned-modern metropolises, Hong Kong’s neon skyline and Macau’s glitzy Las Vegas vibe to the holy temples of Beijing and beyond, China holds surprises at every turn. Across this vast country ancient traditions and superstitions blur together with today’s business, travel, and cultural establishments. And these closely held traditions shine when you leave the city and venture into vast, rural China where remote villages and ancient temples are scattered throughout the country’s 3.7 million square miles.

Beijing With a population of over 21 million people, China’s capital city of Beijing is a force to be reckoned with. Beijing is located at the northern tip of the triangular-like North China Plain and is surrounded by mountains from the north, northwest, and west, which shield the city quite well. Becoming more urbanized each day, Beijing is modernizing while still maintaining its ancient, old-world charms. That’s what’s so exciting about this incredible city- new technologies and structures can be seen at one moment, and at the very next you can see an ancient temple, wander the narrow hutangs (alleys), and chow down traditional Mongolian lamb and Sichuan-style crayfish! Great Wall of China The Great Wall of China is as impressive as it is long, spanning over 3,750 miles. The wall stretches east from Dandong to the west of Lo Lake. Before the Ming Dynasty when bricks were used to add to the wall, rammed earth, stones, and wood created its foundations. Fully created by the Ming Dynasty, the original goal of the wall was to protect the old northern borders of China from various nomadic groups of the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were built during the 7th Century B.C.E., and eventually, these fragments were joined together to create a stronger, more fortified structure, that today is referred to as the “Great Wall of China” that so many flock to see! Xi’an & the Terra Cotta Army The Xi’an & and the Terra Cotta Army are clay sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China. These sculptures exemplify a form of “funerary art,” representing the life of the late emperor. They were buried with the emperor in order to protect his spirit in the afterlife. Created around the late 3rd Century B.C.E., these figures were discovered by local farmers in Lintong District in 1974. Each soldier sculpture may be a part of a different rank in the army, resulting in various sized likenesses. The tallest are the generals, and other possible ranks are warriors, chariots, and horses. Shanghai Steeped in a curious history full of gangsters and colonial adventurers, Shanghai has blossomed into an incredible hot spot that is a must-see for travelers to China. As the most populous city in the world it stands at a striking 24 million in population—and is on the rise. Glass-and-steel high-rises have created a stunning skyline among the clouds as down below, commerce and culture flourish. Don’t miss a chance to check out the city’s budding arts scene, including music and Chinese Opera, as well as traditional Chinese cuisine. Yangtze River The Yangtze River is not only the longest river in Asia, it is the third largest in the world, behind the Amazon and Nile, respectively. For 3,915 miles, it wanders throughout China’s borders – creating a scenic water way and contributing immensely to China’s economic boom. In fact, the Yangtze River Delta generates around 20% of China’s gross domestic product. The Three Gorges Dam which crosses the river near Sandouping in the Hubei province is the largest power station (hydroelectric) in terms of installed capacity. Those who have the pleasure of cruising the Yangtze River will be treated to incredible views of The Three Gorges (Qutang, Wu and Xiling) which lie between Chongqing and Yueyang and features cliffs that soar thousands of feet above the river. Forbidden City The Forbidden City served as the Imperial Palace of China for almost 500 years, spanning from the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) until the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911). As the political center and stronghold of China, many emperors and their families lived within its fortified walls.  Recorded as the largest collection of reserved wood from the ancient world, this structure is now the residing place for the Palace Museum. The Forbidden City is a rectangular edifice that is located in the center of current day Beijing. The design of the Forbidden City reflects a significant amount of symbolism. For example, yellow symbolizes the imperial power of the emperor, so all of the roofs are glazed yellow. Tiananmen Square Beijing’s city square, better known as Tiananmen Square, is one of the city’s most iconic sights. Tiananmen translates to “Gates of the Heavenly Peace” and is named for a monument placed there to mark the entrance into the Imperial City (where the Forbidden City was located). In 1989 the infamous Tiananmen Square Massacre occurred -- a clash between authorities and college students who were advocating for democracy. This remains one of the most politically-heated topics in China, just as Tiananmen Square remains one of the most visited places by travelers to  the city.

Useful information for planning your vacation in China

The official language of China is Mandarin Chinese. Among the enormous number of local dialects, large groups speak Cantonese, Fukienese, and Minnanhua. Inner Mongolia, Tibet, and Xinjiang, which are autonomous regions, have their own languages. In the countryside, strong regional accents, and local dialects (there can be many differences even within a single province) mean that even native Mandarin speakers can struggle to communicate at times.

The currency of China is the renminbi (RMB), more commonly known as the yuan. ATMs can be found in Chinese cities, though only Visa or Mastercard will be accepted in most of them.

While the use of cash is decreasing in China as payment apps like Alipay become more popular, it’s still possible to pay in cash or by card in many places. Your specialist and in-country guide can advise on what will be most suitable for your trip.

Chinese food is known all over the world and while visiting, you should try signature dishes from each region you visit. Ingredients and cooking styles vary across the country creating a complex symphony of dishes that can make eating out in China a highlight of a visit.

There are four major regional cooking styles with northern cuisine featuring dishes such as Peking duck, Mongolian hotpot, and shuijiao (boiled dumplings). Food in the east is rich, sweet, and often pickled, western cuisine such as Sichuan and Hunan food, is spicy, and often sour and peppery, while southern (Cantonese food) is most familiar to Westerners.

One of the best-known national drinks is baijiu, a fiery distilled rice wine. The local beer, Qingdao, is similar to German lager and there are also some good wines.

In general tipping is not expected in China, however, porters, waiters, and room attendants in international hotels will appreciate a small sum. It’s more common to tip guides and drivers and your specialist can advise on appropriate amounts closer to your travel dates.

For the latest travel advice for China, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

In China, you can stay in boutique hotels, historic mansions, simple guesthouses, or international chain hotels. The choice of places to stay in China’s cities is generally varied and includes luxurious urban retreats as well as sleek, modern hotels , while in more rural areas hotels generally have more local character.

For example, you could stay in a beautifully restored Tang Dynasty house in Hangzhou, a private villa in a lush garden in Lijiang, a small boutique hotel in Xiamen, or a simple courtyard house in Dali. Wherever you decide to go, your specialist will help you find the right place for each night’s stay, but for some ideas you can browse our collection of places to stay in China .

To see China’s cultural and scenic highlights including the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Terracotta Army, you should go to Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai. Imperial treasures, historic city streets, and the expansive Olympic Park await in Beijing . Xian is home to a legion of life-size warriors carved to protect an emperor in the afterlife, and Shanghai’s juxtaposition of ancient and modern sees tradition and excess run side by side.

China is a vast country and you may also want to see pandas in Chengdu or the towering karst pinnacles and traditional villages around Guilin , take a hike along the Tiger Leaping Gorge , or follow ancient traders along the Silk Route. Your specialist will help you narrow down the options and plan a trip that covers all your interests.

Imperial cities, sacred mountains, temples, shrine, and markets — China offers a bounty of places to discover and things to do. Its finely tuned balance between age-old tradition and pioneering innovation combined with its rich customs and heritage make it a fascinating country to explore.

You can walk China’s Great Wall or marvel at the impassive Terracotta Warriors, visit incense-filled temples, or wander buzzing markets. You could discover the roots of China’s culinary prowess on a Shanghai food tour , walk the Dragon’s Backbone to the see the Longji rice terraces, or discover local life on a guided countryside bike ride .

Maybe you’d like to explore Beijing’s hutongs (backstreets), watch the sun set over Shanghai from a rooftop bar, or visit Ming-dynasty walled towns, or the historic markets of Hong Kong. China encompasses it all, and so much more.

It takes around 16 and a half hours to fly from the East Coast of the US to China, and around 14 hours from the West Coast.

The time zone in China is UTC+8 hours across the whole country. Daylight Savings Time isn’t observed.

The best way to get around in China is by rail or air. High-speed trains link all the main cities and are fast, efficient, and comfortable. For longer journeys, we can book internal flights, while for more local travel, a private driver-guide gives you the freedom to enjoy the sights and stay informed as you travel.

Improved infrastructure and increased political freedoms mean it’s also possible to combine a visit to China with overland travel into northern Vietnam. Speak to your specialist for more information.

A visa is required by all visitors to China. US citizens must apply for their visa through the Chinese embassy in Washington DC or the Chinese consulates in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Houston.

You’ll need to book an appointment at least one month before departure but no more than three months before.

At the appointment, all applicants (excluding people under the age of 14 and over the age of 70 years old) will also be asked to submit fingerprints.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for China, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Your passport should be valid for a minimum of six months from the date you arrive in China and have at least two blank pages for your visa.

Upgrade their seats. They’ve got 20-year-old business class seats in their 777s. The food choices. On the way to Manila and the way back I thought we’re lousy compared to other carriers. The staff was fantastic and very happy.

Continual rescheduling of flights, inflight entertainment system did not work, staff not pleasant to interact with.

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

We did booked shorter layovers but flights changed and layovers are too long good thing Philippine Airlines give us a hotel in manila but here Vancouver to Calgary too long layovers and there is enough sets to wait closer to air canada and they will open 4am.we were here 1 am .our flights schedule for air canada 8:10am.we paid expensive flights but not happy of lay over Vancouver to Calgary.

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

Not a pleasant experience from the start of booking first flight all the way through to the actually flight. Only saving grace is the food.

No power on an 11 hour flight? What a joke. Crew did not come by enough to get trash or offer water.

Checking in was okay but boarding a little bit slow

There is a problem with the sound while watching movie or listening to the music ( the sound is static & goes on and off). Aside from the sound, the experience was good & stewardesses are nice.

Not leave 12 hours late. This airline is horrible always late does not refund upgrades for cancelled flights inept counter staff.. needs to be shutdown

The flight was delayed for almost 5 hours, but I understand that it was not up to the company, however how they could handle the situation better, they never apologized for that delay, moreover despite passengers being there for 7 hours only thing they did was to give a bowl of instant noodles, afterwards on the plane tiny snacks, people were there starting from lunch time and we’ve arrived to destination at almost midnight

Flight was delayed for 2 hours for no reason, then we spent almost an hour after boarding because of the weather conditions. If we left on time we could avoid that 😾

Designed with American innovation for beginner stargazers, the Celestron Travel Scope 70DX is a professionally engineered refractor telescope that is perfect for celestial or terrestrial viewing on the go. It’s the perfect telescope for adults and kids to use together with its fully-coated, high-quality glass optics, including a refractor-style 70mm objective lens. Added coating on the large 70mm lens allows more light to enter, providing sharper, crisper viewing of celestial and terrestrial objects during the day or at night. The Celestron telescope for beginners is designed with several operating features that make it exceptionally user-friendly. We’ve included two quality eyepieces (20mm and 10mm), 2x Barlow lens, and a star diagonal for crisp low- and high-power viewing during the day or night, allowing you to enjoy close-ups of wildlife in nature or stargaze. This telescope also comes with a smartphone adapter that allows you to connect any smartphone to any telescope eyepiece with an outside diameter of 45mm or smaller for digiscoping opportunities. To capture the best image, we provided a Bluetooth shutter release that allows you to trigger the camera’s shutter on any Android or iOS smartphone remotely, without disturbing the placement of your phone and telescope.
