Friendly Asia Travel: Reviews

Fantastic experience: Friendly Asia Travel was recommended to me by a seasoned traveller to Asia, and I've used their services for my three trips to China. They've assisted me with flights, hotels, visas, travel medical...and I'm 100% satisfied. And, yes, the folks at Friendly Asia Travel are friendly; easy to deal with and accommodating.

Fantastic experience: Diane was able to do for me in minutes what others said could not be done. Very professional and patient.

Fantastic experience: This would be my go-to if I wanted to find air tickets to Asia. The price is very reasonable and the owners are very nice. They go above and beyond to help me find the air tickets based on my availability dates and budget.

Positive experience: Good service, friendly staff, good prices

Fantastic experience: Trustworthy family business truly mirroring their name. Unpretentious, down to earth with great competitive prices. We've been using their services continually for over a decade now. Highly recommended!

Positive experience: The staf is friendly, honestly and helpful

Fantastic experience: I was booking my ticket to Viet Nam back in June/2022 , with some of the covid rules , they were really helping me to go through all the steps that necessary to go there and back I would strongly recommend their services

Positive experience: Phil is very accomodating as well as informing us whenever there are changes with the flights. It is indeed a friendly travel agency. Thank you for the help.

Fantastic experience: I use Friendly Asia Travel for not just over sea flights but domestic flights for my company and other international locations. They make it easy and hassle free without the big ticket prices you see at other airline companies. I have been using their services for over 10 years now and they always keep an eye out on flights and give me various options. If you are not into online bookings and want someone else to give you free consultation and do the homework for ya call Phil and Diane. :)

Fantastic experience: Diane (owner) has been a travel agent for over 30 something years, and this business is still running, so this has got to speak volumes about this place! She is friendly, honest, and knows her stuff. I have booked trips to Asia (Vietnam/Cambodia) with her almost 3 years ago, and she found me reasonably priced accommodations to stay at with great service. Definitely would definitely this place!

“Bob Chapman & the Wonderful Team at Edmonton Travel! Once again I find myself deeply indebted to you and your excellent team of travel professionals as they make arrangements for our family reunion aboard a cruise to Alaska. Our reunion will include over 36 family members, and the inherent difficulties in trying to satisfy 36 different thoughts and ideas was overcoming. Needless to say, I simply made one call to Donna Krawchuk in your office, and now everything is coming nicely together and we are now looking forward to our upcoming reunion, and most importantly, with no stress.”
“For our London to Paris and French River cruise, Bob did a great job of organizing and bringing together a diverse group. The group jelled by Day 3 and we all enjoyed everyone’s company until the end. The trip was extremely well organized and attention to detail was superb. It was a fabulous time as advertised, particularly in Paris. At the tail end of our trip in Provence, Kristin booked us a sensational & beautiful property. This was a trip of a life time, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Since going on this tour, we have recommended to our friends that they should use Edmonton Travel.”

World of Flavours: Asian Dining in Edmonton

Home » Blog » World of Flavours: Asian Dining in Edmonton

This edition of the blog needs to start with an acknowledgement… we get it, the Asian food scene in Edmonton is VAST.  There are so many amazing restaurants representing a multitude of cultures and styles that we just cannot mention them all.  But we’re making a valiant effort to shine a light on a few of our favourites and hopefully you’ll use it as inspiration to keep exploring.

asian travel edmonton

The Lingnan

The Lingnan is easily Edmonton’s most famous and oldest Chinese restaurant, established in 1947 by the Quon brothers.  The restaurant is still run by the Quon family, headed up by Kinman Quon.  Furnished in all the trappings of a Chinese food restaurant (gold, red, tasseled chandeliers and richly patterned carpet), you’re going to love it, and the food.

Speaking of food, their menu is absolutely massive with every Chinese food favourite you could want.  Snow Peas with Pork or Beef, Fried Rice, Diced Almond Shrimp Ding and the hugely popular Hot and Dry Crispy Chicken are on our shortlist of faves.  Try their weekend/game day buffet for a sampling of their top dishes.

asian travel edmonton

Izakaya Tomo

Authentic.  That’s the one word that best describes the experience at Izakaya Tomo.  A completely traditional sushi bar with subtle lighting, wood varnished wood tables, benches, and a huge selection of sake on display.

Roughly translated, izakaya means stay-drink-place , while tomo is friend and this is certainly a place you’ll want to stick around for drinks and delicious Japanese food.  Owner Tomoya Mutaguchi extends a level of hospitality you won’t experience anywhere else.  Voted Best Sushi in Edmonton for 2022 by Edify Edmonton , choose any item with confidence knowing you’re having the finest Japanese cuisine the city has to offer.

asian travel edmonton

Buok Fresh Korean Kitchen

Korean food is a creative blend of flavours and textures that come together into amazingly tasty and nutritious dishes.  You can hardly feel bad for eating dinner out for the 4 th time this week (or maybe more, we won’t judge!).

At Buok, the menu is loaded with iconic favourites led by Bibimbap, which is most often rice as a base, piled with veggies, meat, tofu, and a sauce like gochujang (spicy and sweet) or bulgogi (smoky and tangy).  Their Bibimbap is so good, in fact, that it was voted number 22 on the list of best things to eat and drink in Edmonton for 2022 by The Tomato.

asian travel edmonton

Tokiwa Ramen

Ramen is Japanese and although we have one Japanese restaurant already listed, ramen really is its own category, and we simply couldn’t skip Tokiwa.  Open every day between 11am and 3pm, be prepared to line up or show up very early to get a table and get your lunch order in.  Why such demand?  Because this place is fantastic.

Broths of chicken, pork, soy and miso are made fresh daily and serve as the base for your choice of ramen bowl.  Their spicy broth is so good that it charted at number 68 on The Tomato’s Best Things to Eat and Drink In Edmonton 2022 .  Each ramen dish is topped with bbq pork (unless you prefer a vegetarian option), half boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, bean sprouts, bok choi and green onions.  Add more toppings of your choice for an extra charge.

asian travel edmonton

Dang Good Vietnamese Cuisine

The fragrant, fresh flavours of Vietnamese food are perfectly captured at Dang Good.  The Vermicelli Colour Bowls come in various combinations that can include, pork, chicken or beef, crispy spring rolls and a variety of fresh and pickled vegetables.

Feel for something warmer?  Pho and noodle soups with meat, seafood or wontons, piled high with noodles, bean sprouts, cabbage and basil is an easy choice.  If you want something a little different, opt for a soup with a spicy or citrus broth like the Hot and Sour Seafood Soup or Spicy Lemongrass Noodle Soup.

Don’t leave without getting an order of the Fresh Salad Rolls with peanut dipping sauce… our personal favourite!

asian travel edmonton

Filistix was founded in 2008 as a simple food trailer that became established at farmer’s markets, festivals and events around the city.  Now Filistix has one campus location (University of Alberta Students’ Union Building) and a downtown location on 100 Avenue.

Filipino cuisine is a complex blend of sweet, sour, creamy, crispy, salty and spicy delicacies so be sure to try a few different dishes to get the full spectrum.  Try the Pork Adobo, a salty and tangy braised pork dish and the Spamsilog, a breakfast dish that features (you guessed it!) spam with fried egg and rice.  Finally, save room for the South Pacific Coconut Chicken which placed at number 12 on The Tomato’s Top 100 Best Things to Eat and Drink for 2022 .

asian travel edmonton

Kaengthai Bistro

This list wouldn’t be complete without one Thai restaurant, and that restaurant is Kaengthai Bistro.  A small spot located in in Old Strathcona, Kaengthai Bistro boasts a 4.7 on Google reviews.  Their extensive menu has a line up of the dishes you crave, made with fresh ingredients and aromatic spices.

Get adventurous and try out the lesser-known dishes like the Tom Kha Soup, a coconut broth with mushrooms, tomatoes, lemongrass and lime leaves, or the Rad Nah, a noodle and egg stir fry with Thai gravy and vegetables.  You can feel confident trying something new, because at Kaengthai you know it will be great!

They say variety is the spice of life and that applies to more than food!  Get a change of scene and visit Edmonton.  Edmonton’s Best Hotels makes it easy to fit a getaway into your budget with our amazing 1, 2, 3 Pick Your Rewards Deal !!  Get up to $225 in extras that can include prepaid Mastercards, gas cards, and dining cards.  How’s that for spicy?

For example, if a guest books two nights on x and y date and then makes another two-night booking for the same dates at the same hotel or another hotel, EBH considers this a double booking and will honour rewards for only one of those bookings.

Is there a limit on the number of bookings I make on different dates?  Edmonton Best Hotels welcomes repeat business.  Some of our guests visit Edmonton every month.  Please note as stated earlier there must be a minimum of three days between bookings. Please also note stated blackout dates.

Cancelling and date changes to reservations

If a guest wants to cancel or change the dates of their booking.

What if I want to cancel my booking?  Edmonton Best Hotels must cancel your booking (not the hotel).  If you want to cancel, contact [email protected] and let us know.  We will cancel your booking and send you a cancellation number for your records.  Please do not cancel directly with the hotel.

What if I want to change the dates of my booking?  You must contact Edmonton Best Hotels at [email protected] and let us know you want to make a date change.  Your original booking must be cancelled first.  You will receive a cancellation number for your records.  Then, you must rebook for your new dates.  The hotel nor Edmonton’s Best Hotels cannot make date changes to the original booking.  Please note this does not guarantee you will receive the same hotel rate when you rebook for different dates.

Caught on camera: Edmonton police release video connected to ‘Project Gaslight’ investigation

Social sharing.

A rash of extortion incidents targeting South Asian home builders in Edmonton has dropped off, but police are continuing to investigate the string of arsons that have destroyed new or under-construction homes.

On Wednesday, the Edmonton Police Service provided an update on Project Gaslight — a probe into 34 incidents alleged to have been carried out by a group of local suspects who are being directed by someone in India.

Investigators have said the houses went up in flames after local South Asian business owners received WhatsApp messages demanding large amounts of money. In January, police said most of the people being targeted are of Indian origin.

There have been no new instances of extortion or arson since the last EPS update in January, Staff Sgt. Dave Paton said Wednesday.

  • More than 250 people attend police town hall about Edmonton extortion series
  • Extortions targeting South Asian home builders in Edmonton orchestrated from India, police say

"Some of our police offensive tactics that we used against some of these individuals, I think were very successful," Paton told reporters.

"And you can't leave out the fact that the community engagement that we had made a huge difference as well. We suspect some of that pressure came from the community itself in order to kind of put some of these people at bay."

Earlier this year, EPS arrested and charged six young men and a youth in connection with the extortion series in January. One of the suspects was believed to have since fled the country.

On Wednesday, police released a series of surveillance videos showing a number of individuals and vehicles believed to be connected to the extortion spree who investigators are still trying to track down.

One of the videos shows two people with a jerry can of gas break into a Beaumont house on Dec. 14, 2023. The video appears to show them lighting a fire. Flames burst out of the open door as they flee the scene.

Paton said investigators don't know exactly how the young suspects are being recruited, but said it could be financial incentives or that they were beholden to the person directing the operation in some way.

  • Torched homes, threats have Edmonton's South Asian business community on edge

Ten investigators and two analysts have been working on the extortion investigations, and Paton says they've made good progress.

He said EPS is not directly working with police in India, but that RCMP have been in contact with investigators in that country.

Paton also said the recent killing of Edmonton businessman Buta Singh Gill at one of his south Edmonton construction sites is not related to the extortion incidents.

Gill, 57, was shot by a man who also shot another person at the scene, and then shot and killed himself. The second shooting victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

What is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and why is it in May?

A sian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month is observed from May 1 to May 31. It celebrates AAPI culture, history and the stories of more than 20.6 million Americans per the U.S Census.

The AAPI population encompasses people from a wide swath of the world, including cultures from East, Southeast and South Asia, the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, MassLive will highlight AAPI leaders across the state.

But what is AAPI Heritage Month? Why is it celebrated and how was it established?

Rep. Frank Horton, R-NY, and Senator Daniel Inouye, D-HI, introduced two separate bills into Congress in 1977 that would designate the first 10 days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week, according to History.com .

The reason for choosing May was to commemorate two historical days for the AAPI community, according to the bills drafted by Horton and Inouye. The first was to celebrate May 7, 1843, the date when a 14-year-old Japanese boy named Nakahama Manjirō and his shipwrecked crew came to the United States after they were found by Capt. William Whitfield. Whitfield adopted the boy and brought him to his home state of Massachusetts — making Manjiro the first Japanese person to immigrate to the United States.

The second day commemorated in the bills was May 10, 1869 — the completion of the transcontinental railroad. A total of 12,000 Chinese immigrants made up the majority of those working on the railroad, and helped lay down tracks to connect the western part of the railroad to the eastern half.

Both these bills failed, but Horton introduced an identical bill the following year, which was approved by both the House and Senate and then signed into law by President Jimmy Carter. In 1979, the first Heritage Week was celebrated with an official proclamation by Carter.

In 1992, Congress voted to expand Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week into a month-wide observance, which President George H.W. Bush signed into law that year. In 2009, the name Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was rebranded as AAPI Heritage Month after President Barack Obama expanded the month to include the recognition of Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians.

The AAPI community is comprised of people who are from or have family that have come from several different countries, including China, Japan, Cambodia, India, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Polynesia, Laos, the Hawaiian Islands, the Marshall Islands and more.

According to the 2020 U.S. census, the AAPI population in Massachusetts is 504,900, with Boston and Quincy having the highest and second-highest AAPI populations in the state, respectively. Throughout May, Boston will be home to several events celebrating AAPI Heritage Month, such as an AAPI 5k race on May 18 and an AAPI comedy festival at the Rozzie Square Theater from May 24 to May 25 .

Edmonton police seek more tips in arson extortion scheme targeting South Asian community

Edmonton police seek more tips in arson extortion scheme targeting south asian community back to video.

Edmonton police on Wednesday released video of the Dec. 14, 2023, arson in Beaumont — one of 34 suspected extortion incidents targeting the Edmonton region’s South Asian community.

Six other surveillance clips were released in hopes tips from the public will help bring charges against around a dozen suspects.

Staff Sgt. David Paton said investigators believe a person in India is co-ordinating the arsons and shootings, many of which have targeted homebuilders and resulted in $10 million in property damage. A dozen investigators and analysts are assigned to the probe — dubbed Project Gaslight — and have spent months combing through surveillance video from homes, stores and fuelling stations where suspects allegedly bought jerry cans and gasoline, Paton said.

“This investigation is heating up. We are making excellent progress and anticipate having more video and updates for you in the coming days and weeks.”

There has not been another arson linked to the case since January. No one has been killed or injured, though Paton said several shootings have been “close calls.” A firefighter was injured while responding to one of the blazes.

The videos released Wednesday cover incidents between Nov. 6, 2023, and Jan. 28, 2024.

“In some of the videos, we are looking for the public’s help in identifying suspects,” Paton said. “In others, we know who they are, and we are looking for more information on their activities on the dates in question.”

One clip shows three unidentified suspects approaching a home on Meadowview Way in Leduc on Nov. 24 with a gas can.

Another from Dec. 31 shows an SUV arriving at a home in a new subdivision at 16 Avenue and 12 Street, driving away as smoke rises from the structure. Police are also looking for a white Mercedes sedan seen circling the area prior to the blaze.

In January, police said extortion victims reported receiving WhatsApp calls or messages demanding large sums of money. In some cases, the sender had personal information about the victim, including their family members, vehicles and lifestyle details.

“Failure to pay the extorted sum results in arson or other property damage to new home buildings, show homes and related property,” police said. “The suspects have also been known to make follow-up demands for higher sums of money, leading to an escalation of violence and driveby shootings.”

Patson said he did not know if anyone had paid the sums.

As of January, five young men and a youth have been charged in connection with the extortions.

Parminder Singh, who was 20 at the time of his arrest in October, was charged with 12 firearms offences after a shooting in the Laurel neighbourhood.

Hassan Dembil, Manav Heer and Ravinder Sandu — all 18 and 19 at the time of their arrests — were charged with arson for a Dec. 19, 2023, house fire in Cy Becker. A youth was also charged in the incident.

Arjun Sahnan, 19, is also facing five firearms-related charges after a Dec. 30, 2023, traffic stop near 17 Street and 49 Avenue.

Paton said city police are liaising with police in India through the RCMP. He ruled out any connection between the Edmonton extortions and similar crimes targeting South Asian communities in British Columbia and Ontario.

“I think these type of things are quite common in India, and I think maybe it’s a tactic they’re exploiting,” he said.

The deadly shooting of homebuilder Buta Singh Gill April 8 is not connected to the extortions, Paton said. That shooting was carried out by a 49-year-old man who is believed to have worked for Gill. The shooter wounded another man before turning the gun on himself.

China travel surges for May holiday but consumers remain wary

asian travel edmonton

BEIJING – Travel by rail and car across China surged on May 1, the first day of a major public holiday, as consumers remained focused on keeping expenses down in a challenged economy.

In the run-up to the five-day holiday that began with May Day, domestic airline fares were falling, and forecasts suggested more travellers were opting to drive rather than fly, or had booked early to save.

Travel of all kinds has rebounded since China lifted strict Covid-19 control measures at the end of 2022. But consumer spending on those trips has failed to keep up, limiting the boost to the broader economy.

China has set an economic growth target for 2024 of around 5 per cent , which many analysts say will be a challenge to achieve without much more stimulus.

China’s manufacturing and services activity both expanded at a slower pace in April, official surveys showed on April 30, suggesting some loss of momentum.

“There is indeed significant pressure,” Mr Lin Yu, 38, who was visiting Beijing from Hangzhou. “Every family’s situation is different, and it clearly also depends on the industry you work in.”

By the fourth week of April, the average price for an economy flight in China had dropped 38 per cent from the first week of the month to the equivalent of just under US$97 (S$132), according to VariFlight, an aviation data service provider.

“Chinese airlines must adapt to these changes,” said Mr Zheng Hongfeng, co-founder of VariFlight, who said the fare declines showed travellers were booking early in a highly competitive market.

About 58 million cars are expected to be on roads every day during the holiday, while railways carried more than 20 million passengers on May 1 alone, state media reported.

The number of trips taken during the first quarter was up almost 17 per cent from a year earlier, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

A three-day public holiday during April was the first time average spending per trip rose beyond 2019 levels. By that measure, spending was up then just over 1 per cent.

Some companies have shifted to try to appeal to consumers watching their spending as they watch the road.

Yum China, the operator of KFC in China, said this week that 30 per cent of its new stores would be in lower-tier cities or roadside locations like highway rest stops.

Same-store sales at those locations were up 20 per cent during Chinese New Year in February, Yum China CEO Joey Wat said.

“They’re key to capturing the spike in travel volume during holidays,” she said. REUTERS
