For avid collectors (or mere admirers) of fine china and porcelain looking to brush up on their knowledge of Wedgwood, this month the storied British maker introduces World of Wedgwood, an immersive visitor experience at its impressive 240-acre Barlaston estate, a 2.5 hour train ride from London.

Giving guests unprecedented access to Wedgwood’s production facilities, design studios, and extensive archives, the new program allows visitors to explore the brand’s rich history and craftsmanship through various hands-on activities and tours across the campus.

From a factory tour that invites visitors to observe craftsmen and women in the midst of casting ceramics or hand painting and ornamenting porcelain, to a design-studio visit that offers insights into the design process behind Wedgwood’s newest collections or a visit to the Master Craft Studio, where guests are encouraged to create their own designs, the World of Wedgwood hopes to introduce the brand—arguably the benchmark for British china and porcelain for more than two centuries—to a new generation.

The Wedgwood Museum, which hosts one of the most extensive contemporary ceramics collections in the world, displaying more than 3,000 (of 80,000 total) pieces, is considered the centerpiece of the visitor experience, and presents a comprehensive overview of the brand’s rich history.

Guests looking for an afternoon break can go for high tea at the new Wedgwood Tea Room. For those who would rather replicate the experience at home, all the tableware is, of course, for sale at the new flagship shop, the largest Wedgwood retail space in the U.K.

What better way to celebrate the wonderful ceramic heritage of Stoke-on-Trent than a visit to World of Wedgwood ? The Barlaston -based attraction boasts a museum, factory, flagship store, three eateries and more. We took a closer look at this spectacular place…

What can I see at World of Wedgwood?

Where to begin! The exhibits span 250 years of history, from the design to the production of all the iconic Wedgwood wares. There’s a permanent display of ceramics and more, including more than 80,000 pieces, which is on long-term loan from the V&A Museum in London.

You’ll also find fascinating temporary exhibitions. At the moment, until April 30, there’s a special pop-up about ‘Thomas Allen and his Circle’. This exhibit explores some of the designer’s most important creations, including the Ivanhoe pattern. Visit the World of Wedgwood events page for the latest.

An historic Black “Basaltes” First Day’s Vase made by Wedgwood at the Etruria factory, in 1769.

Can I go on a factory tour?

The fantastic news is that you can still see skilled craftspeople at work at the home of Wedgwood pottery. Witness the entire production process of their Jasper ware, from casting to decorating and gilding.

Depending on your pace, you can go on a self-guided tour (takes around 90 minutes to complete), or opt for an insightful one hour expert-guided tour (these are available throughout the day on a first-come-first-served basis, they can’t be booked). These take place Monday to Friday, from 10am until 4pm, with last entry 2pm or 3pm depending on the tour type.

Tickets for the factory tour cost £10 for adults, or £8 for concessions (including children aged 12 to 16, over 60s and students).

What activities can families do?

Throwing a pot at World of Wedgwood, in Barlaston.

Aside from the factory tour, there are plenty of additional activities families can get stuck into. The little ‘uns can embark on a Pottery Spotters museum trail while you walk around the exhibits. If they complete it all, they could win a prize.

There’s also a decorating studio (£17.50 to £25), and the Master Craft studio where you can all have a go at throwing a pot (£15).

If the weather is fine, let the kids roam on the outdoor play area, with giant interactive willow installations dreamed up by artist Tom Hare. They can run through a huge coffee pot or rope swing from a tea saucer.

What is the shop like?

This is the Wedgwood flagship store , so you’d be hard-pressed not to find what you’re looking for here. It’s the largest store dedicated to Wedgwood anywhere, and new collections are launched here before they are released anywhere else in the UK. There’s also a ‘Made in England’ section, which includes collections not available elsewhere in Europe. All this makes it the perfect stop for a unique gift.

There is also a handy service which allows you to place an order for an item and then have your purchases delivered across the world.

The Wonderlust Tea range by Wedgwood

Where can I eat and drink at World of Wedgwood?

There are three different eateries at World of Wedgwood. There’s a delightful Wedgwood Tea Room as well as the Tea Conservatory, where you can savour afternoon tea, brunches or classic English cuisine. For a Sunday lunch you can’t beat The Dining Hall which is the most family friendly, and inspired by the original Barlaston worker’s canteen.

How accessible is World of Wedgwood?

All parts of the attraction are suitable for wheelchair users, with walkways, lifts and ramps. There are also four wheelchairs on site for visitors to use for free.

Can I bring my dog?

Unless it’s an assistance dog, you can take your pet in the courtyard and grounds but not in the museum, shops, factory tour, Atrium, Conservatory, Tea Room or Dining Hall.

Can I take photos?

You can, apart from during the factory tour.

How much does a ticket cost?

The museum itself is free, but extras like a factory tour of the decorating studio have a fee.

Opening times

World of Wedgwood is open Monday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm.

The Dining Hall opens at 9.30am, the Conservatory at 10am, and the Tea Room at 12pm. The last request for afternoon tea is at 4pm.

World of Wedgwood’s address is: Wedgwood Drive, Barlaston, ST12 9ER.
