1.  Bangalore Palace

What is it?  A palace inspired by Windsor Castle in England, with distinct Tudor style. 

Why go?  The Bangalore Palace is one of Bangalore’s most well-known landmarks. It was built in 1878 by Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar, and looks like something straight out of a fairytale, features stunning Gothic-style stained glass windows, Victorian furniture, tall turrets and towers, and intricate carvings. Inside, you’ll find art from the nineteenth and twentieth century as well as old family portraits. As well as being beautiful to visit all times of year, the palace hosts shows, concerts and more. 

2.  Ulsoor Lake

What is it? Located in the heart of the city, Ulsoor Lake is one of the largest lakes in Bangalore spanning an area of over 120 acres. 

Why go? If you want to relax in peace and quiet, Ulsoor offers just that. With several islands that offer plenty of space to relax and take in the serenity of the lake, it also has boating facilities for those looking to get active. There’s also a walking track around the lake, perfect for a quiet stroll amidst the bustling city life.

3.  Government Museum

What is it? Established in 1865, the Government Museum is one of the oldest museums in India.

Why go? The Government Museum showcases historically significant and rare archaeological and geological artefacts. Whether you're interested in Neolithic pottery, jewellery, coins and paintings from ancient Indian kingdoms or sculptures and inscriptions, something at the museum will likely pique your interest. Situated right along the Government Museum is the Venkatappa Art Gallery, dedicated to showcasing the artwork by the famous artisan of Karnataka, K. Venkatappa.

4.  Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace

What is it? The summer abode of the former ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan.

Why go? The palace is worth visiting for its amazing architecture. The palace as it stands today, in Indo-Islamic architecture, was completed in 1791. Predominantly made of teakwood, the most eye-catching feature is its sturdy pillars and floral motifs adorning the walls and ceilings of the palace.

5.  ISKCON Temple

What is it? Perched on Hare Krishna Hill, this is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Why go? It is said to be one of the largest ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) temples in the world, which makes it worthy of a visit. The temple has four gopurams (towers), each connected to the other by a glazed-glass canopy. The main shrine, called Rajagopuram, is known for its beautifully decorated idols of Sri Radha-Krishna; plus the ceilings are adorned with magnificent paintings that depict Lord Krishna’s pastimes. Prayers and recitals along with spiritual workshops are held regularly, and visitors are welcome to attend. There’s also an ISKCON Vedic theatre, exhibit areas, a Vedic museum, an open-air amphitheatre and beautifully landscaped gardens within the premises.

6.  KR Market

What is it? One of the largest flower markets in Asia.

Why go? To experience the heart of Bangalore, head to the KR Market. Here you’ll find a variety of wares including copper goods, spices, fruits, fresh produces, utensils, flowers and food stalls. The crowds and congestion can make the experience a little overwhelming, so we recommend taking a guided tour, which will not only help you get around and grab great deals but will tell you about the market’s history.

7.  Bull Temple

What is it? A sixteenth-century Hindu temple dedicated to Nandi, the bull.

Why go?  Constructed in Dravidian architectural style, this stunning building (which is also known as Nandi Temple) is the city’s most popular religious sanctuary. Besides the religious significance, the dominant feature of the temple is the immense idol of Nandi. Carved out of a single granite rock, this sculpture is four-and-a-half metres tall and six metres long and is always decorated with flower garlands.

8.  Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum

What is it? A science and technology museum, located just metres away from the Government Museum.

Why go? Spread over five floors, the museum features an array of interactive exhibits that cover everything from mechanical devices and electronics to old-world locomotives, outer space, dinosaurs, the human body and biotechnology. There's also an auditorium, telemedicine facility and a 3D theatre, along with science demonstrations and taramandal shows held here throughout the year.

9.  Janapada Loka

What is it? A folk museum where you’ll learn about Bangalore’s fascinating history.

Why go? If you're interested in the region of Karnataka’s folk art and culture, extend your stay in Bangalore to visit Janapada Loka, located about 35 miles from the city. It is divided into different wings, displaying a collection of more than 5,000 folk objects. Expect to see rural household items, folk instruments, agricultural tools, 500-year old shadow puppets, ancient stone sculptures and a traditional village replica. There’s also an open-air theatre, an artificial lake with a pedal boating facility and a library.

10.  Lalbagh Botanical Garden

What is it? A pristine, green oasis right in the midst of the city.

Why go? If you want to connect with nature, the Lalbagh Botanical Garden is the place to be. It is dotted with a wide variety of plants from across the globe. The major attraction of the garden, however, is the nineteenth-century glasshouse, built along the lines of London’s Crystal Palace.

11.  Wonderla

What is it? An amusement park worth the drive from the city centre.

Why go? If you’re looking for a day (or more) of family fun, a visit to Wonderla is a must. It has plenty of rides for kids and families, plus high-thrill coasters. There are more than 50 land and water-based rides, along with other attractions, including musical fountains, laser shows and a virtual reality show. If you love the combination of music and rain, don’t miss the Rain Disco – an indoor dance floor with showers of warm water and psychedelic laser lights.

What is it? India's first interactive museum draws its inspiration from Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture.

Why go? Love making music? Then you might want to visit the Indian Music Experience, a one-of-a-kind museum dedicated to the thriving Indian music scene. Stretching four storeys, the museum comprises eight thematic galleries, a sound garden, a café, musical sculptures and a learning centre for music enthusiasts. You can even play instruments, record and create your own music.

13.  Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath

What is it? A fine art gallery and educational institution for budding artists.

Why go? The Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath is a must for lovers of visual art. Opened in 1960, it comprises five galleries and 13 museums, containing an eclectic collection of Indian and international modern, contemporary, traditional, folk and tribal art. Among the exhibits are Mysore-style paintings, Gond tribal paintings, leather puppets of Karnataka and folk paintings of Tamil Nadu. If you have time, you can sign-up for a short-term painting course.

14.  National Gallery of Modern Art

What is it? A treasure trove of modern art in a historic setting.

Why go? You’ll get to enjoy artwork from the eighteenth century to present times, including works by legendary Indian artists like Rabindranath Tagore, Amrita Sher-Gil and Raja Ravi Verma. There are also regular film screenings here and a café.

15.  Cubbon Park

What is it? Nestled in Bangalore’s business district, Cubbon Park is the green lungs of the city.

Why go? With well-cut walkways and pristine natural surroundings, Cubbon Park is the best place to go for jogging, walking and cycling. Also, there are a variety of flowering and ornamental trees, an aquarium and a play area for kids. While you’re here, be sure to check out the city’s two most important buildings surrounding the park – the Attara Kacheri (home of the state’s High Court) and the Vidhana Soudha (the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka).

16.  VV Puram Street Food

What is it? A street food hub renowned for its huge selection of Indian snacks.

Why go? Street food lovers shouldn’t miss this street out. It is dotted with numerous food joints offering everything from south Indian food to north India street delights. The tastiest options include bhajia (fritters), bath masala dosa, jalebi (sweet pretzel) and chaats (savoury snacks).  

17.  Atta Galatta

What is it? A bookstore with a café.

Why go? If you’re a book lover, Atta Galatta is your kind of place. Here, you will find over 10,000 titles in English, Kannada, Bengali and many other languages. In addition to that, book reading sessions, poetry interpretations, book launches and art exhibits are held here regularly (some events are free to attend). To amp your reading experience, there’s a café within the bookstore serving great coffee and munchies.

18.  Bannerghatta National Park

What is it? A sprawling nature park and zoo, home to India’s first butterfly park.

Why go? Covering over 100 square kilometres and home to an incredible array of flora and fauna, the Bannerghatta National Park is a nature-lover’s dream. It features ten forest reserves, a butterfly park, a zoo, a snake park, an aquarium, a children’s park, a museum, a crocodile park, an elephant sanctuary and a safari park. You can explore it all by a guided bus tour or jeep safari.

19.  Nandi Hills

What is it? A detour en-route to the Bangalore airport will lead you to scenic Nandi Hills, an ancient hill fortress.

Why go? If you’re looking to get some Instagram-worthy panoramic views of the city, this is the spot to do it. The journey to the peak is challenging because of the winding roads and sharp bends. But once you reach the summit and see the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, you’ll know that it was worth it. Aim to be there for sunrise or sunset as the views are unbeatable. Don’t miss the Yoga Nandeeshwara temple, located atop the hill and guarded by the statue of Nandi (the bull); the Bhoga Nandeeshwar temple at the base of Nandi hills; and the Tipu’s Drop, a 600-metre cliff. One side note, a stretch of the route to the summit was closed in late summer 2021 following a landslide, so best to check for the latest updates.

I have spent 8 years in Bangalore, and this post brings back all those memories of visiting most of these places in Bangalore. Though, few I missed visiting from the list, but my favorite were visiting Bull Temple, Ragigudda Temple, MG Road, Cubbon park, Lalbagh, etc.

I visited Bangalore very briefly for a business trip in 2019. And I didn’t get to see much, but I was staying near the St Marks Cathedral, so had a glimpse of that. Then walked around Cubbon Park. Now, all the others are on list, should I ever go again.

Vikasa Soudha Bengaluru

Next to Vidhana Soudha is Vikasa Soudha, standing majestically. Spread over 8 acres of land, this building with more than 360 rooms presents an impressive view, similar to that of Vidhana Soudha. Popularly referred as ‘Sister of Vidhana Soudha’, this magnificent structure of granite was inaugurated in 2004 by the then the Karnataka Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi.

Devanahalli Fort Bangalore

Built by Mallabairegowda of Avati clan in 1501, Devanahalli Fort is located around 35 km away from Bangalore city. This fort saw many reigns over a span of many decades. in 1747, It was conquered by Dalawai, Nanjarajaiah in 1747, then by Marathas and then later came under Hyder Ali which was again transferred to Tipu Sultan. The present structure of this fort was built during Hyder Ali rule. This fort also has many temples, namely Venugopalaswamy temple, Chandramouleshwara Temple, Siddalingeshwara temple and Nanjundeshwara temple. It's amazing structure and historically association is worth exploring.

06 Cubbon Park Bengaluru

Built in the year 1864 by the then viceroy of India, Sir Mark Cubbon, this park enjoys an ideal location with many popular sightseeing places located in its proximity. Initially named as Meade’s Park after John Meade, this park was later renamed as Sri Chamarajendra Park in 1927 in the honor of Mysore King Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar. However, it is popularly known as Cubbon Park. With more than 600 different kinds of flora, mesmerising landscapes and vast open spaces, this park is frequented to experience the serenity of nature.

Bangalore Palace

Located in Palace Gardens, this palace was built in 1887 during the reign of Wodeyar Dynasty. Built in the Tudor-style architecture, this palace mesmerizes everyone with its captivating architecture comprising of intricate wooden carvings, lush green gardens, gothic windows, fortified towers, etc. Bangalore Palace show resembles the palaces of England to an extent. Bull Temple Bangalore

One of the oldest and the most popular temples of Bangalore, Bull temple is dedicated to Nandi, the ride of Lord Shiva. The main attraction of this temple is the magnificent statue of Nandi with a height of 4.5 meter and width of around 6 meters. The statue has been carved out of a single granite rock. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, this temple was built by KempeGowda I, founder of Bangalore. It is also said that this statue grew in size and to stop its further growing a small iron plate has been kept on the head of Nandi.

St. Mary's Basilica Bengaluru

Initially built as small chapel in 1818, St. Mary’s Basilica underwent many changes. Its captivating gothic carvings were added later during renovations while in 1882 stained glass windows were added to it and then again in 1947 it was again renovated. In 1973, the statue of Basilica was brought to this Church. It is known for its architecture as well as religious significance.

Freedom Park Bangalore

Spread over 21 acres of area, Freedom Park was originally a central jail which used for jailing those against British rule. During the period of emergency, many national political leaders had also stayed in this jail. It was later inaugurated as Freedom Park, symbolic of the freedom struggle during the colonial period. Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple Bengaluru

Popularly known as Gavipuram Cave Temple, this temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is being protected under the Karnataka Ancient and Historical Monuments, and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1961. Built in the 6th Century, this temple is known for its beautiful architecture, which has been carved out of a rock which is further enhanced with the granite pillars at its front This rock-cut temple was restored and renovated during 16th century by Kempegowda I, who is known as the founder of Bangalore.

Dodda Ganapathi Temple Bangalore

Situated in Basavanagudi, this temple is one of the most popular temples in Bangalore. It is known for its huge idol of Lord Ganesha which has a height of 18 feet and width of 16 feet. The statue of Lord Ganesha has been carved out of a single stone and is believed to have grown to this size. Constructed by founder of Bangalore, Kempegowda I, this temple is also called Shakthi Ganapathi and Satya Ganapthi.

St. Mark's Cathedral Bengaluru

Built in 1812, St. Mark's Cathedral has been named after St. Mark who is believed to be one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ. The architecture of this church is similar to that of St. Paul’s Cathedral which was constructed in 17th Century. Ulsoor Lake/ Halasuru Lake

Dating back to the 16th century, Ulsoor Lake/ Halasuru Lake is spread over an area of 50 hectares. Located quite close to the M.G Road, it lies on the eastern part of Bangalore. This lake is often visited by locals for spending some time away from the city’s hustle bustle.It is said that this lake was once a favourite recreational spot for Mysore Wadiyars and even Britishers. The serene waters of the lake, still presents a break from buildings and traffic of the city. It is also popular for morning and evening walks. There is also a gurudwara nearby.

HAL Aerospace Museum

India’s first aerospace museum, HAL Aerospace Museum is a must visit on a Bangalore tour. A part of the HAL Heritage Centre and AeroSpace, this museum was built in 2001 by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. This museum boasts a rare collection of helicopters, aircraft models and fighter planes. The most popular displays are MIG-21, Kiran, AJeet, Lakshya, etc. It also has a library, aircraft simulators, an aeromodelling club and a mock Air Traffic Control Tower. Within the museum complex, there is also a separate children’s play area, a herb garden and a rose garden. Located on the old airport road, it is open from 9 AM to 5 PM every day.

ISKCON Temple

One of the largest Krishna temples in the world, ISKCON Temple of Bangalore was built to honour the birth anniversary of Sri Prabhupada who was the founder of ISKCON. Dedicated to Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha, this temple displays Neoclassical style of architecture with 4 gopurams and a hall with 10,000 sq. ft of area. The ceilings of the temple showcase intricate paintings showcasing the life of Lord Krishna. ISKCON temple premises also house the Iskcon Vedic Theatre, an open-air amphitheatre, a Vedic museum, and a lush green garden. Although adorned with traditional art forms and crafts, this temple also has all the modern facilities for the convenience of devotees.

Dodda Alada Mara/ The Big Banyan Tree

At a distance of 28 km from the city centre, Dodda Alada Mara is situated on Bangalore-Mysore Highway. It stands majestically in Kethohalli village. It is a massive banyan tree, which is more than 400 years old. It is considered as the second largest banyan tree in India. Its main trunk has several aerial prop roots, which have turned into thick trunks, resembling the main trunk of the tree.

This big banyan tree has expanded over an area of 7.4 acres. Its aerial roots have now interlaced into each other, creating a grove-like appearance. Not only among nature enthusiasts, it is also popular among Hindu devotees. You can visit this magnificent piece of nature from 8 AM to 5.30 PM.

Ragigudda Temple

Ragigudda Temple, also known as Ragigudda Anjaneya Temple is a popular shrine to visit in Bangalore. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this temple was built in 1972. Although primarily a Lord Hanuman temple, it also has equally captivating shrines of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, and Lord Lakshman. There is also a Shivalinga in the temple complex. On the side of the temple, you will also find engraved rocks with the Holy Trinity of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

Spread over 5 acres of land, this temple is located in the Jayanagar 9th Block and is easily accessible via roadways. It is open for devotees from 8 AM to 11.30 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM on weekdays and from 8 AM to 12.30 PM and 5 PM to 8.30 PM on weekends.

National Gallery of Modern Art

Inaugurated in 2009, National Gallery of Modern Art is built within the complex of Manikyavelu Mansion, which was once a private residence. It is now a part of this museum which is spread over 3.5 acres of land. NGMA Bengaluru displays modern Indian art, starting from the early 18th century. The paintings by Raja Ravi Verma, Amrita Sher-Gil, Jamini Roy and Rabindranath Tagore are the highlights here.

NGMA also houses a public art reference library, a cafeteria, an auditorium, and a museum shop cum facilitation block. A prime cultural centre, NGMA also conducts events, seminars, film screenings and workshops on art and culture. It is open from 11 AM to 6 PM on weekdays except Mondays. On weekends, it is open till 7.30 PM.

Halasuru Someshwara Temple

One of the oldest temples in Bangalore, Halasuru Someshwara Temple dates back to Chola Dynasty. It was later renovated during the reigns of Vijayanagara Kingdom and Kempe Gowda II. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are also shrines for other Hindu deities like Arunachaleswara, Nanjundeshwara, Kamakshamma, Panchalingeshwara and Bhimeswara.

Displaying the Vijayanagar style of architecture, this temple is also visited by those interested in ancient architecture. It has several admirable parts like intricate carvings on its walls, narrow passageways, square garbhagriha, grand mandapas, regal pillars and gopuram. The temple opens at 6 AM to 12.30 PM. It again opens for evening prayers from 5.30 PM to 9 PM.

Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM)

Built in the memory of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum was inaugurated in the year of 1962 by the then PM of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It was opened to the public in 1965. Its first exhibition was ‘Electricity’. VITM presents a peek into the technological history of India. It displays electronics and other scientific models, industrial products, engines, etc.

The major attraction at this museum is the Dinosaur Enclave, Science on a sphere and a replica of the Wright Brothers’ Flyer. The visiting timings are from 9.30 AM to 8 PM. VITM is located near Cubbon Park and is easily accessible by city buses and metro trains.

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium

Established in 1989, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is located on the T. Chowdiah Road. Maintained by the Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE), this planetarium is a must visit if you are travelling with kids or family. It provides information about space, Earth and other celestial bodies in an engaging and fun way.

JNP boasts of a state of the art hybrid projection system and a 15 M Dome. Sky Theatre, Mirror Dome shows, Science park, exhibition hall, know your stars are a few highlights of this museum. It also houses a science centre and a science park. Various activities like star gazing, sky theatre shows, screening of science movies, etc., are also conducted here.

Hebbal Lake

Created in 1537, by Kempe Gowda I, founder of Bengaluru, Hebbal Lake is a must visit if you are seeking sometime in nature. Now maintained by the Lake Development Authority, an NGO, this lake offers a peaceful natural setting, away from the chaos of city life. Home to many migratory birds, this lake is ideal for birdwatching. It is also a popular spot for morning and evening walks and is often frequented by photographers. Visit this lake for a mesmerising view of sunset and sunrise over its serene waters.

Government Museum

Another museum to visit when in Bangalore is the Government Museum. Designed by Colonel Sankey, the museum was opened to the public in 1886. It has an enviable collection of ancient pottery, paintings, inscriptions, stone carvings, coins, etc. Sculptures dating back to Hoysala, Nolamba and Gandhara era; terracotta items from Mathura; excavated items from Halebeedu, Chandravalli, Mohenjodaro, and Hampi; Begur inscription (890 AD), Halmidi Shasana slabs (450 AD), and Atakur inscription slabs ( 949 AD) are the major attractions here.

It is located on the Kasturba Gandhi Road, quite close to Cubbon Park. Its timings are from 10 AM to 5 PM on every day of the week, except Monday. It also remains closed on public holidays.

Apart from sightseeing, Bangalore also offers an amazing range of shopping opportunities. Visit the famed UB City. Spread over 13 acres of land, it is one of the largest shopping hubs in the country. Mr John Cameron of Lalbagh was assigned the task of landscaping Palace along with its surroundings. Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar added a few portions like the twin external staircase, the platform for musicians etc. outside the Durbar Hall. In 1970, HH Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar transferred ownership of the property to two companies, Chamundi Hotels and Shree Venkateshwara Real Estate Enterprises. However, this transaction was later shown to be fraudulent. A legal battle followed between this deal and Jayachamarajendra's son, Srikanta Datta. The five sisters of Srikanta Datta are now in possession of sections of the 28 acres of the Palace. In the year 1990 Srikant Datta finally compromised with the Chamaraju group and got back his part of the property including the main Palace except for 45 acres that the Chamaraju group still retains. Architecture:The Palace showcases exquisite wooden interiors surrounded by pristine walls. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. The exterior walls are of a blushing cinnabar shade that gives the building a quaint Victorian vibe. The floor of the open courtyard of the Palace is adorned with granite seats covered with azure ceramic tiles. The ground floor also contains a beautifully decorated ballroom.The first floor of the Palace has a distinct chamber known as the Durbar Hall attached to an ornate staircase.This hall is famous for the enormous elephant head that is mounted in it and its gothic style tinted glass windows.
