Traveling abroad can be an exciting adventure, but it also brings potential health risks associated with various destinations. Travel clinics in Canada play a vital role in ensuring that individuals embark on safe and healthy journeys. These specialized healthcare facilities are equipped to provide comprehensive travel health services, including vaccinations, disease prevention advice, and essential travel-related medical consultations. Let's explore the significance of travel clinics, the range of services they offer, and how they contribute to safeguarding the health of Canadian travelers as they explore the world.

Understanding Travel Clinics:

Travel clinics are specialized healthcare centers that focus on providing travelers with tailored health advice and preventive measures before embarking on international trips. These clinics are staffed by healthcare professionals with expertise in travel medicine and infectious diseases. Their primary objective is to ensure travelers are well-prepared and protected against health risks specific to their chosen destinations.

The Role of Travel Clinics:

Travel clinics in Kelowna, BC offer a range of essential services that are crucial for international travelers. These include:

  • Destination-Specific Health Advice: Travel clinics provide personalized health advice based on the traveler's itinerary, destination, and individual health history. They assess potential health risks associated with the chosen travel locations and offer guidance on disease prevention and health precautions.
  • Vaccinations and Immunizations: Travel clinics administer necessary vaccinations and immunizations to protect travelers against infectious diseases prevalent in specific regions. Common vaccinations include those for hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever, meningococcal disease, and more.
  • Prescriptions and Medications: Travel clinics may prescribe medications, such as antimalarial drugs or preventive antibiotics, for travelers venturing into regions with a higher risk of specific infections.
  • Traveler's Health Kits: Clinics may provide travelers with health kits containing items like insect repellents, water purification tablets, and basic medical supplies to manage minor health issues during their trip.
  • Post-Travel Consultations: Travel clinics offer post-travel consultations to assess travelers' health upon their return and address any potential health concerns related to their trip.

Preparing for Safe Travel:

Travel clinics play a pivotal role in preparing individuals for safe and healthy international travel. By following these steps, travelers can make the most of their travel clinic visit:

  • Plan Ahead: Schedule a visit to the travel clinic well in advance of the trip, as some vaccinations may require multiple doses over a period of time.
  • Share Travel Details: Provide the travel clinic with detailed information about the travel itinerary, including destinations, travel dates, and planned activities.
  • Review Immunization History: Bring a record of previous vaccinations to help the travel clinic assess any missing or expired immunizations.
  • Seek Additional Advice: Inquire about specific health risks in the destination countries and ask for advice on preventing foodborne illnesses, insect-borne diseases, and other travel-related health concerns.

Special Considerations for High-Risk Travelers:

Certain individuals may require additional considerations when planning international travel. Travel clinics in Kelowna, BC can cater to the needs of high-risk travelers, which may include:

  • Pregnant Women: Pregnant women need careful assessment to ensure their travel plans do not pose any risks to their health or the health of their unborn child.
  • Elderly Travelers: Older adults may have specific health concerns that need to be addressed before embarking on international trips.
  • Immunocompromised Individuals: Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS or undergoing cancer treatment, require special precautions to safeguard their health during travel.
  • Traveling with Children: Parents traveling with young children need advice on vaccinations and measures to ensure their children's well-being during the trip.

Travel Health Precautions during COVID-19 Pandemic:

During the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, travel clinics have adapted their services to address the specific health challenges posed by international travel. Some of the travel health precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic include:

  • COVID-19 Vaccination: Travel clinics provide information on COVID-19 vaccination requirements for international travel. They may offer COVID-19 vaccinations to eligible travelers to protect their health and comply with destination country regulations.
  • Travel Restrictions and Quarantine Guidelines: Travel clinics stay informed about travel restrictions and quarantine guidelines for various countries. They advise travelers on the latest requirements to facilitate smoother travel experiences.
  • Safe Travel Practices: Travel clinics counsel travelers on essential COVID-19 safety measures, such as wearing masks, practicing physical distancing, and frequent handwashing during their journeys.
  • Accessing Travel Clinics in Canada:

Travelers can access travel clinics in Canada through various means:

Practice Philosophy

We strive to provide patient-centered care by offering compassionate, timely, efficient, and accessible services.  Honesty and trust are values that we feel are essential to a fulfilling and satisfying patient-doctor relationship. We endeavor to treat patients as we ourselves would wish to be treated.

Our physicians are dedicated to providing excellent patient care. In addition to being licensed to practice in British Columbia, we are members of the Canadian College of Family Physicians, and we are in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Services

We are full-service family physicians who provide longitudinal care, chronic disease management, virtual and office-based medical care of acute illness, and palliative care services.  Further, we attend to our patients in residential care facilities.  We offer various office procedures including: injections, laceration repairs, cryotherapy, lesion removal, IUD insertion, wound dressing, and splinting various soft tissue injuries.  Currently, none of our physicians practice obstetrics, and only one of us has active admitting privileges to Kelowna General Hospital—Dr Daniel Van Der Merwe. If you are another doctors’ patient, and you require admission to the hospital, you will be cared for by a hospitalist and/or specialists.

We are a teaching practice affiliated with UBC and you may be seen by medical student and/or resident physicians who work closely with your physician to provide for your medical needs. Frequently Asked Questions What types of appointments do you have, and how does it work?

We aim to provide accessible care to our family practice patients; therefore, we attempt to leave time in our day for urgent visits.  If you call in the morning, we will attempt to offer you an urgent  5-minute fit-in appointment,  where the doctor will focus on addressing the urgent problem.  Please note: this visit will often be by phone or virtual visit initially, and will be booked with the doctor who has the most availability.

Non-urgent concerns should be addressed in a  regular booked appointment . These are usually 10 minutes in length and may also be by phone or virtual care. We believe that the best practice for chronic disease management, routine follow-up visits, and prescription refills is to see your primary care physician, and we recommend regularly booked appts for these reasons.  Consider making your next follow-up appointment immediately after your appointment today to ensure continuity of care.

Complete physical exams, PAP test, driver’s medicals, and skin biopsies are scheduled as  a special appointment and are usually a 30-minute appointment. Some of the information gathering for these appointments may be via phone or virtual care before you are seen in-office for this longer appointment.

How long is the wait?

When booking an appointment, the receptionist will ask you the purpose of your visit to ensure an appropriate amount of time can be reserved.  We try to honour your scheduled appointment time to the best of our ability, but unexpected and urgent problems may delay us. When we give you a time for a phone or virtual appointment, we hope to call you within a 45-minute window of that scheduled time. Will the doctor call in my prescription?

Prescriptions will not be refilled by fax without an appointment.  In extenuating circumstances, exceptions may be made, but we encourage you to plan booking an appointment with us at least 2 weeks before running out of medications. What are uninsured services?

Medical Services Plan (MSP) does not pay for all services provided by the physicians and the clinic.  For example: the time required to complete forms; some driver’s, school, and work medicals; chart transfers and cosmetic procedures.  These will be billed privately, and payment will be required in full at the time the service is provided.  A fee schedule for these services is available upon request. Can I call about my test results?

Results are not provided over the phone by our staff, but they will let you know whether the doctor has reviewed the results.  Many results can be viewed through the Interior Health Portal:

http://myhealthportal.interiorhealth.ca

or Valley Medical Laboratories portal:

https://secure.myehealth.ca/

We encourage you to follow up with us about all results.  If test results are abnormal, we will contact you to request a follow-up visit or direct you to treatment.

Results and patient information is not given to family members without expressed written consent. Can I get virtual or telephone medical advice?

Health link BC ( www.healthlinkbc.ca ) and dialing 811 are good resources for many common problems.

Our initial contact with you may be by telephone or by virtual visit. However, we believe that a proper medical diagnosis may require physical examination, and we can schedule an in-office assessment as needed after our preliminary discussion.

Our Virtual visits are done via a third-party provider,  caprimedical.doxy.me

The link can be accessed via computer, tablet or phone that has a camera. We will send you the link at the time you booked your appointment, and will not usually send a reminder. We recommend you log on and check your device’s compatibility at least 5 minutes before your appointment time. How do I get a referral to a specialist?

Please book an appointment with your family physician to discuss a referral to a specialist or allied health professional.  Your family physician is familiar with your medical history and is in the best position to accurately assess the reason for referral.  As such, he/she can recommend which care provider would appropriately serve your needs.
