New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of State and local tourism boards before traveling.)

Crazy Horse Memorial: Crazy Horse

This larger-than-life mountain monument is dedicated to Crazy Horse (Tasunke Witco in Lakota), who led a band of Lakota warriors against George Custer's battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Crazy Horse monument, which has been under construction since 1948, is located in the heart of the Black Hills and is the world's largest sculptural undertaking. Despite the fact that the monument remains unfinished, it attracts more than 1 million visitors every year.

During your visit, you can also check out the Indian Museum of North America, which houses artwork and artifacts from more than 300 Native Nations, as well as the Native American Educational and Cultural Center, where you can learn about Native American history and culture through hands-on activities and instruction from Native artists.

Throughout the year, the campus also hosts cultural performances, speaker series, art workshops, laser light shows and more. You can also dine at the Laughing Water Restaurant before you leave. Visitors say the memorial is a great place to learn about the Indigenous people of the region and to witness history in the making.

Mount Rushmore: Keystone

Top things to do in South Dakota

Carved into the Six Grandfathers Mountain, as it was known by the Lakota Sioux, Mount Rushmore is a tribute to four presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Located less than 25 miles southwest of Rapid City, the monument was first carved in 1927, and the final drilling took place in 1941. The end result was four faces, each 60 feet tall – the original plans included the presidents' bodies down to their waists, but the project ran out of funds.

Past visitors call Mount Rushmore a bucket list item and recommend taking one of the ranger-guided tours. One of the top attractions in the U.S. , monument is busiest during the summer months, so if you want smaller crowds (without the cold weather), time your visit to Mount Rushmore for May, September or October.

Wind Cave National Park: Hot Springs

Top things to do in South Dakota

Wind Cave, named for the barometric winds coming out of the cave's entrance, is the first cave in the world to be declared a national park. Spanning more than 150 miles, Wind Cave National Park is the sixth-longest cave in the world and is home to the world's largest concentration of boxwork formations – a rare structure of honeycomb calcite on the cave's walls. If you're planning a visit, make sure you reserve a ranger-guided tour early, as they often sell out a few hours in advance.

Above the cave, you can experience the biodiversity of the prairie. There are more than 30 miles of hiking trails, and you'll be able to see free-roaming bison, prairie dogs, elk, various birds and more.

The park has an official campground, but backcountry camping is also an option for more experienced adventurers. Recent visitors say the rangers and visitor center staff are very knowledgeable about the area, and even if you don't get to tour the cave, the park is worth a visit.

More than 400,000 tons of rock were blasted from the side of the mountain in its creation. The Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center on the terrace overlooking the monument is a fun part of any visit. The 0.6-mile Presidential Trail departs from the terrace, allowing visitors to get a closer look at the monument. The monument is illuminated in the evening and accompanied by a patriotic ceremony.

While Mount Rushmore is often a defining feature of a South Dakota vacation, most people only spend about a half day at the monument. A large herd of bison roams freely within the park, adding a unique element to the whole experience. This inhospitable scenery is strangely beautiful and one of South Dakota's most visited destinations.

Parking places and viewpoints line the Badlands Loop Road , which tours the scenic environment from the northwestern Pinnacles Entrance to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center . Changing vistas of rugged rock formations are the real appeal of this scenic route, as well as the Buffalo Gap National Grassland , one of the last remaining intact prairie landscapes in North America.

The Cedar Pass area is home to the park's eight designated trails. Routes like the Door, Window, and Notch Trails offer an easy hike into the challenging environment. The cave contains a unique and delicate cave structure known as "boxwork , " which is found in only a few other places in the world.

The only way to explore Wind Cave is through one of many guided sightseeing tours that take place nearly every day of the year. Different tours are available for different ability levels, with most routes following lighted and cement pathways installed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

For those not interested in an underground tour, the above-ground area of the park is also very beautiful, with rolling hills and roaming bison. 13 Fun Things to Do in South Dakota

2020 was a mix of challenges for many, but for me, it brought epic road trips and unique discoveries, especially in South Dakota. Let me share 13 fun things to do in South Dakota that I loved and think you will too.

Table of Contents

1. see the world’s only corn palace in mitchell, 2. experience wild wonders at custer state park, 3. a momentous gaze at mount rushmore memorial, 4. stop in the legendary full throttle saloon adventure, 5. quintessential small-town bliss in custer, 6. badlands national park: a colorful desert spectacle, 7. sturgis motorcycle rally: revving up the fun, 8. holy terror coffee: the quaintest cuppa in town, 9. the towering crazy horse memorial, 10. wall, south dakota: a glimpse into the old west, 11. dakota brick house: a foodie haven in vermillion, 12. photograph dignity of earth and sky, 13. usd campus: a hub of history and beauty, discover south dakota.

Mitchell, South Dakota, takes pride in the one-of-a-kind Corn Palace. Adorned with colorful corn and husk murals that are reinvented annually, this architectural marvel showcases the creativity and spirit of the region. A fun fact is that the murals are created from 325,000 ears of colored corn, sliced and nailed for decoration.

The world-famous  Corn Palace , resembling a gym, hosts a great museum, snack bar, and souvenir shop. Pick up a popcorn ball, a local favorite made with marshmallows, and browse the historical events celebrated on the palace walls.

Stroll through Mitchell’s friendly streets, visit delightful shops like the  Vault Clothing Co ., and sip gourmet coffee. Don’t miss the delicious treats at  Crazy About Cupcakes , a spot that’s as Instagrammable as indulgent!

Custer State Park  offers 71,000 acres of Black Hills wilderness and four historic lodges. With well-kept roads and scenic routes, such as Needles Highway and the 19-mile Wildlife Loop Road, the park invites nature enthusiasts for a drive they’ll always remember. Hopefully, you’ll get lucky to experience bison and burro (donkey) jams in the streets like I did.

Watch for pronghorn antelope, prairie dogs, and majestic elk as you explore one of South Dakota’s best outdoor havens. You can also fish and camp at this property.

The awe-inspiring  Mount Rushmore , with the monumental faces of Presidents Roosevelt,  Washington , Lincoln, and Jefferson, is a vision that stirs the soul and induces chill bumps. I shed tears when I first saw this amazing slice of Americana I’d wanted to see for more than 40 years.

The celebrated landmark is easily accessible, needing only a parking pass to experience it. Whether you capture incredible photos by day or revel in the star-stuffed evening light show and tribute, Mount Rushmore is a testament to American resilience and creativity you must witness firsthand.

Be sure to check out the Mount Rushmore gift shop before leaving.

In the heart of Sturgis lies the  Full Throttle Saloon , renowned as the world’s biggest biker bar. My friend Sara and I chanced upon this vibrant watering hole during our 9-state, 10 National Park road trip as our online map took us on a short-cut dirt road that ended at the sight of the thousands of bikers parked at this venue. Visitors are also greeted by fantastic motorcycle statues and photo ops.

With live music setting the tone and a welcoming crowd, it’s an electrifying escape where all are invited to enjoy the camaraderie and cold drinks. It feels more like a huge concert venue than a biker bar.

The quaint town of Custer brims with local charm found by way of historical sites, unique boutiques, and tempting eateries. Neighboring monumental attractions like Crazy Horse Monument and Wind Cave National Park, Custer, in the beautiful South Dakota Black Hills, is a hub of comfort and discovery.

Treat your taste buds at places like the Purple Pie Place or unwind amid the cozy ambiance of Calamity Jane’s Coffee Shop . Don’t forget to capture the whimsical painted bison that grace the town, adding an artistic touch to your wanderlust.

For open skies and geological wonders, unleash your inner explorer at  Badlands National Park . Discover striking geologic rock formations painted in colorful hues that tell ancient earth stories. This 244,000-acre park promises encounters with majestic bison, playful prairie dogs, and jaw-dropping dramatic landscapes in every direction.

While there, pop into the  Ben Reifel Visitor Center  to snag a keepsake and unearth the park’s past. I found excellent posters, postcards, and t-shirts.

Want more National Parks? You can read about Medora, ND for Theodore Roosevelt National Park here.

Whether on two wheels or two feet, the  Sturgis Motorcycle Rally  is a sight to behold. Nearly half a million motor enthusiasts gather here for a thrilling blend of rides, bites, and rhythm over ten fun-filled days. You might not catch me on a Harley, but admiring the camaraderie and festival atmosphere undoubtedly fuels the spirit.

What’s a road trip without cozy coffee breaks? Holy Terror Coffee in Keystone, South Dakota, strikes a chord with its charming decor, both stylish and whimsical, and inventive brews. Indulge in their iced mocha frappe and the tastiest pastries – trust me, the carrot cake fudge is a little slice of heaven.

Take note; they’re seasonal, opening from Mother’s Day through Labor Day.

Driven by tributes from fellow travel buffs, the Crazy Horse Memorial commands attention. Carved into a mountainside, this grand unfinished statue honors Native American culture and history. Although it was a drive-by visit this time, this masterpiece’s scale and vision captivated us from afar.

Are you seeking a taste of Wild West nostalgia? The town of Wall, South Dakota, is your ticket back in time. With roots as a humble railroad outpost for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, today it beckons travelers with eclectic shops and local eats.

Don’t miss Wall Drug Store’s famed five-cent coffee and juicy hot beef sandwiches – a true step into the frontier life. It’s the world’s largest drugstore. Remember that during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, thousands of motorcycles will be amidst the parking lots.

Food lovers, meet your match at Dakota Brick House . Their Artichoke Skillet Dip is not just another appetizer; it’s a mouthwatering experience. Savor the perfect medley of spinach, garlic, and gruyère – it’s heartwarming comfort food that’s etched in my memory for all the right reasons. They also have tantalizing wings, poutine, wood-fired pizzas, and tacos.

Suddenly, there she was, “ Dignity of Earth and Sky ,” a 50-foot stainless steel symbol of Lakota and Dakota Native American pride. Overlooking the  Missouri  River, this poignant statue elegantly captures the spirit inherent in South Dakota’s cultural tapestry.

One hundred twenty-eight fluttering blue diamond shapes on her quilt tell a story of resilience and beauty. Visible between exits 263 and 265 on I-90 – Dignity, in her native 1850s dress, a sight that calls for pause and admiration.

Stroll through the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for architectural splendor and verdant landscapes. The flagship location is more than just educational grounds; it’s a scenic haven teaming with ‘Yote (pronounced like goat) pride. Go to Old Main, the campus star, for the best photo ops.

Captivating and brimming with personality, South Dakota offers an eclectic mix of sights and experiences. Whether seeking a serene natural retreat or an up-close encounter with Americana, this beloved state promises every traveler a story worth telling.

If we were blown away with all of the cool things to see in South Dakota we know you will be too.

Table of Contents

What to do in South Dakota

Did you know that South Dakota is home to one of America’s greatest monuments? And the landscape is also a lot more than just prairies and farmland. It’s a shame it doesn’t get more recognition. We’ve been to more famous destinations that have a lot less to offer.

But I have a feeling that is about to change and once you see all there is to see and do, I hope you are tempted to visit South Dakota too!

South Dakota Attractions Route

Starting from flying into Rapid City, we took a road trip around South Dakota to explore all the historic monuments and amazing landscapes.

1. Mount Rushmore National Historic Site

What to do in south Dakota | Mount Rushmore

Have you ever wondered where exactly Mount Rushmore was? I knew there was a monument dedicated to four American presidents but I never knew where it was. Well, now I know. It is definitely the king of the South Dakota attractions. And it is just as impressive in real life as it is in the movies .

The idea was to create a sculpture that would lure tourists to the black hills of South Dakota and four pivotal American presidents would do the trick. Construction began in 1927 on the four head of presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. It was completed in 1941 and has been attracting millions of tourists each year ever since. Read all about Mount Rushmore here.

  • Plan your visit at Mount Rushmore National Park Service

2. Badlands National Park

South Dakota attractions | Badlands National Park

We had been to Alberta’s badlands and were mesmerized by its beauty. So we couldn’t wait to see the South Dakota Badlands because we heard they were outstanding.

Our morning started off with a 4:00 am wake up call to be out to the badlands for sunrise. It was worth the early rising for spectacular photographs. The rest of the day followed the loop road around the badlands looking at it from all different angles. There are easy pull-offs and spots to go for a hike throughout the park so take your time. • Make sure to stop for a bite to eat at Wall Drug – America’s Favorite Roadside attraction .

3. Buffalo at Custer State Park

things to do South Dakota | See buffalo in Custer State Park

At Custer State Park you can go on a buffalo safari to witness these magnificent creatures up close and personal. This is just something you must see in South Dakota. At sunset, we loaded into our safari jeeps in search of a herd and within minutes were surrounded by majestic buffalo.  Read more: Best Things to do in Custer State Park

There are approximately 1500 free-roaming buffalo (more accurately named bison). You can drive the loop on your own, but the safari jeeps will take you off-road for a closer view.

  • Check out the Buffalo State Park Jeep Tour for more information.

4. Needles Highway

fun places to visit in south dakota

The Needles Highway is located within Custer State Park and it is a beautiful drive. Constructed in 1922, it was designed to be one of America’s great drives. It was designed to drive directly into the enormous granite spires. At 14 miles long you can take your time to stop at every lookout to take in the mountain vistas and rocky outcrops.

5. Wild Mustangs

south dakota attractions mustangs

Don’t you love horses? I especially love seeing horses roam free. They were meant to run and The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary l ets them do just that.

Situated on 11,000 acres, the sanctuary is home to 600 mustangs. There are other horses roaming free as well. Many are rescued from abusive situations and are living out their days in complete freedom and happiness. You can take a bus tour through the sanctuary where you can get out and actually meet the horses face to face.

  • See the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary for details on how to visit.

6. Crazy Horse Memorial

south dakota attractions crazy horse

Did you know that South Dakota has another famous face carved into the Black Hills? Construction on Crazy Horse began in 1947 and it’s not scheduled to finish anytime soon.

The Lakota people wanted a monument to show that they too had heroes and Crazy Horse was one of them. He was one of the last of his people to give into the Americans and even though he had no intention of going to the reserves himself, he knew that his people wouldn’t survive unless they did.

So he finally negotiated a peace treaty to allow his people to come in and he would leave in peace. Instead he was double-crossed and stabbed in the back. The reason Crazy Horse is taking so long to complete is that sculpture Korczak Ziolkowski promised the Lakota people that no government funding would be involved.

It has been depending on public funding for more than half a century and his children and grandchildren have now taken over the project. Find out more history at the Crazy Horse Memorial.

7. Deadwood

fun places to visit in south dakota

It’s a kitschy gambling town, but visiting Deadwood is probably one of the most fun things to do in South Dakota. It’s where you can visit the graves of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane and get an idea of what is was like back in the old west.

There’s a lot of history in this old gold rush town. It was truly the Wild West. A lawless town filled with gunslingers, gold seekers, and gamblers. Wild Bill was gunned down here while playing poker and many moments in history are re-enacted each evening on the streets. See more at Step into the Wild West of Deadwood .

8. Spearfish Canyon

south dakota attractions spearfish canyon

If you thought South Dakota was just all prairies and farmland, thing again. There are many parks located around the state and Spearfish Canyon is a highlight. There are waterfalls and high limestone cliffs making for a beautiful drive.

Be sure to get out of the car though and take one of the many hikes, a highlight for us was going up to community cave for a bird’s eye view of the park.

9. Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave South Dakota

Take a guided tour through Wind Cave with a park ranger to see one of the largest karst cave systems in the world. What makes Wind Cave unique is boxwork formations can be found here which is rare throughout the world. Outside the cave, you’ll see more bison (buffalo), elk and rolling hills.

10. Mammoth Site

south dakota attractions mammoth

We’ve been to dinosaur provincial park and we’ve witnessed many dinosaur bones, but Mammoth to tour an actual mammoth site is something different. Archeological digs are still going on and you can take guided tours through the active dig site or go on a self-guided tour.

South Dakota surprised and delighted us. We were blown away with all the things to do in South Dakota from its outdoor adventures to its national historic sites. This state is filled with rugged beauty complete with striking landscapes, quirky encounters, and unrivaled wildlife. If you are planning a trip to America’s west, make sure to add South Dakota to the top of your list.

You missed northern South Dakota.

We are planning a trip for next month and any tips will be very helpful. Thanks

We are planning something like this with our kids. Thank you for all of the great information. Can you say if it is worth us taking our trailer with ATV’s? Are there much opportunities for us to get out and use them? Thanks.

A friend and I are planning a similar route. Just curious how long you spent? At this point we are planning 3-4 Days.

3-4 days should be fine. I believe we were there four days.

I have a good experience of Spearfish Canyon because I have been there many of the times in my whole life to enjoy my holidays and have a spent spectacular time with my family and friends. In my point of view it is a best way to have great fun in this fabulous state.

Didn’t know about the Spearfish area we were just there in the area. Looks like a great place to stop.

The only thing that I knew about it was Mount Rushmore. It was the lead photo you had for this post showing sunrise in the badlands that attracted me to this post. That scene was so beautiful.

Wow superb places, I enjoyed by seeing pictures, thanks for share………

Wow! I had no idea South Dakota has so much to see and do. Your photos are fantastic!

The Badlands of South Dakota is just the best for me. I like The Badlands of South Dakota too… I take a gander at about the states makes me need to visit much more. I didn’t understand there was such a great amount to find in South Dakota! The wild horses sound astonishin

South Dakota seems like an amazing place to connect with nature! I love your photo of Spearfish Canyon and the beautiful contrast of colors in the photo of the Badlands. Thanks for all the cool quick facts and ideas.

Thanks Mary, glad we could give you a few good facts! The badlands are extraordinary. Certainly a photographers dream. Spearfish Canyon was a fabulous place to hike and enjoy nature.

South Dakota is stubtle in its beauty, but one needs only look at the high plains and canyons to see the sweeping vistas, wonderful grasslands and hills, gorgeous sky and sunsets. It’s a place most folks don’t even know their is a “south” dakota. It is peaceful and grand. The cities are far and few inbetween and often not much is happening but Rapid City has grown greatly and the Black Hills has many surprises. I think everyone needs to go to SD at least once to see a true America. Of course, visit the The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, my bias 🙂

Well said Tilly, it’s true, South Dakota felt like a true American destination. I wish we spent more time in Rapid City, we had such an early flight out the next morning, we just went for a quick dinner and then straight to bed. But it looks like a cool town. 25 Best Things to Do in South Dakota — Fun Activities & Stuff to Do!

Global Grasshopper – travel inspiration for the road less travelled

Top 18 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in South Dakota

Sparsely populated and home to colossal granite sculptures, rolling prairies, some of the most unique geologic landscapes in the US, and a characterful former gold rush town that inspired an HBO series (Deadwood!) South Dakota is an endlessly fascinating state.

It’s also endlessly attractive, with some seriously gorgeous landscapes and natural attractions. From vast protected areas where wild bison roam to some of the most famous memorials in the country, here are my favorite places…

1. Custer State Park

Custer State Park South Dakota

Named after Lt. Colonel Custer, this unique area is South Dakota’s largest and first state park. Located in the Black Hills and originating way back in 1919, it’s a haven for both nature lovers and wildlife spotters.

Here, you can immerse yourself in seventy-one thousand acres of wonderful wilderness and go on scenic drives, explore the lakes, or camp out overnight.

The landscapes here are beautiful, but in my opinion, it’s the wildlife that’s the biggest draw. Here, you’ll find wild roaming herds of bison, antelope, mountain goats, elk, coyotes, bighorn sheep, wild turkeys, and super-cute prairie dogs, so I would highly recommend bringing your camera!

2. Pinnacles, the Badlands National Park

Pinnacles South Dakota

Badlands National Park is a unique beauty spot and I love this place! The Pinnacles Overlook offers sweeping beautiful views and faces south, so it’s a great destination to visit at sunset.

I recommend gazing wonderfully at the magnificent natural formations and trying to spot wildlife simultaneously!

3. Deadwood!

Deadwood - best places to visit in South Dakota

Located in the Black Hills near Mt. Rushmore, this former Gold Rush town originated in 1874. It’s famous for inspiring the popular HBO series of the same name starring Ian McShane.

It’s a very interesting place to visit where history comes alive. Here, you can walk in the footsteps of Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock and visit concerts, casinos, museums, and historic sites.

4. Canyon Lake Park, Rapid City

Canyon Lake Park

Located right in the middle of Rapid City, this park consists of 29 acres and truly offers something for everyone. You can bring food and feed the ducks once the sun sets, picnic near the lake with your family, or sit by the lake’s edge and get your feet wet.

I recommend taking a stroll in the area, including four pavilions. You can also enjoy a playground, sand volleyball court, and paddle boats that you can rent if you decide to get in the water for a close-up view.

5. Crazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial

The funny thing about this memorial is that its creation has been in the works for decades, yet it is still not complete. That being said, the memorial offers a beauty unlike any other in many ways.

It’s a majestic memorial set against the Black Hills, and its beauty is eye-catching between the mountainous terrain and the acres of green trees! In my opinion, it’s the perfect attraction for people who love natural beauty and history.

6. Falls Park, Sioux Falls

Falls Park, Sioux Falls

If you love waterfalls, in my opinion, this is the place to be! Although Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city, it doesn’t need skyscrapers or bright lights because even those things couldn’t compete with these gorgeous waterfalls, which all gravitate toward the Big Sioux River.

The park offers biking trails, observation towers, sculptures, playgrounds, a farmer’s market, and historic displays. If you love state parks, this place is a gem!

7. Hill City, Black Hills National Forest

Black Hills National Forest

Hill City is right in the middle of the Black Hills National Forest, and I think it’s adorable! There, you can do many fun things that will keep you busy for hours.

There are restaurants, museums, a winery, and a fun train ride.

While you’re out and about doing these things, you can enjoy the natural beauty all around you. Even if you’re sitting in a diner having something cool to drink, you’ll be able to enjoy your time there thoroughly.

8. Lake Herman

Lake Herman - South Dakota

Located about an hour north of Sioux Falls, Lake Herman consists of a lake and a park. It is the perfect place to stop and have a picnic or relax by the waterside.

It is actually a small peninsula that extends out to the lake itself. Things to see and do include wildflowers, trails, old cabins, boating and kayaking, and some of the most amazing sunsets you’ve ever seen.

This is a great place to take your family for the day, and it even includes campsites you can use for those overnight camping trips you love.

9. Lewis and Clark Expedition Area

Lewis and Clark Expedition Area

When you think of a recreation area, you often think of beautiful waters that you can boat and sail on, hilly terrains to enjoy and maybe hike on, and participation in many other outdoor activities, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition Area offers all that and more.

Located close to Yankton, the area is beautiful and is by far one of the most popular attractions in the entire state. This is the perfect place to visit to get away from it all and enjoy gorgeous surroundings and some physical activity.

10. Mount Rushmore National Monument

Mount Rushmore

This is South Dakota’s most iconic tourist attraction, visited by millions yearly. The 60-foot-tall granite statues of President George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln are some of the most recognized statues on the planet.

The only problem is that the photographs in magazines and on television never do this attraction justice. I personally think this monument alone is well worth a trip to South Dakota!

11. Needles Highway

Needles Highway South Dakota

Winding through the Black Hills, this highway is stunning and a full 14 miles long. Along the way, you’ll enjoy the Cathedral Spires made of granite that tower above the road. One of those spires looks just like a needle, complete with the eye, hence the highway’s name.

You’ll never be bored driving along this highway between the mountains and the pine trees because it consists of some of the most extraordinary views you’ve ever experienced.

12. Notch Trail, Badlands National Park

South Dakota

A fun attraction for the whole family, Notch Trail is 1.5 miles long and perfect for people of all fitness levels. You can reach a plateau by taking a man-made set of stairs and enjoy the occasional nesting bird that loves to hide in the area.

When you’re done with the hike, you’ll have a spectacular view of the White River Valley. However, if you’re afraid of heights, skip it!

13. Roughlock Falls

Roughlock Falls

One of the things that makes this area a little unique is that it is filled with ADA-accessible sections, which means anyone can enjoy it anytime they like.

With quaint bridges, gorgeous waterfalls, and extraordinary scenery, not to mention forests, rock formations, and meadows, visiting Roughlock Falls should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The area officially begins at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge and has enough streams and greenery that you’ll likely want to stay much longer than you’d planned—and you are certainly welcome to do just that!

14. Sage Creek Wilderness Area, Badlands National Park

Sage Creek Wilderness Area

A very remote area of Badlands National Park, this is an overlooked part, but in my opinion, it’s an area worth visiting. The area includes sunflower fields, lots of hilly green land, camping and hiking opportunities, and opportunities to view bison out in the fields.

Other animals you will likely see include prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, and snakes.

But if you want solitude and a place to go to help you relax and get away from it all, the Sage Creek Wilderness Area is where you want to be.

15. Spirit Mound Historic Prairie

Spirit Mound Historic Prairie

Located in Vermillion, this prairie covers 240 acres and has a fascinating history. For one thing, historians know it is one of the areas that Lewis and Clark visited on their epic journey, giving it a significant place in American history.

The sweeping vistas are nothing short of spectacular, and regardless of which section you visit, you will never get bored.

Interestingly, the Plains Indians were convinced that the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie was inhabited by “little people,” their name for malevolent ghosts or spirits.

16. Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake - South Dakota

This sapphire lake is nothing short of stunning. Its trees, rocky shores, and beautiful scenery will make you want to stay forever.

It is located in Custer State Park and is surrounded by pine trees. It is the perfect place to visit if you wish to hike or enjoy the crystal-clear water.

When the hilly sidelines reflect onto the water, it is spectacular. If you love beautiful views and relaxing activities, visiting Sylvan Lake is something you won’t want to miss while in South Dakota.

17. Keystone

Town of Keystone

Located just a few miles from Hill City, Keystone is tiny but amazing. With mountains and an old-fashioned lineup of stores and restaurants, it is surrounded by the Black Hills National Forest.

The town is tiny, with only 350 residents, even though it offers many things to see and do.

There is even a real steam train that takes you through the area and to the Black Hills, and a half-mile loop called the Presidential Trail allows you to enjoy some fantastic views of Mount Rushmore.

18. Wonderland Cave, Sturgis

Wonderland Cave, Sturgis

This gorgeous cave is 60 million years old and is just as unique as you think it is. Indeed a wonderland, the cave wasn’t available to white settlers until 1929, so many people have never heard of it.

Still, if you’re visiting the great state, you don’t want to miss it because it consists of dozens of rooms filled with various formations to enjoy—each one is more unique than the one before it!

  • Black Elk Peak , Black Hills, SD : As the highest point in South Dakota, Black Elk Peak has some of the best views in the state. It was formerly called Harney Peak after a U.S. Army officer in the 1800s.
