• What do you like to do in different seasons?

I don’t really care about the seasons. To me, weather affects what I do. If it’s hot I will be do outside activities like playing sports or hanging out. If it’s cold I’ll stay inside and probably  take a good nap .

• What are the differences between different seasons?

Well summer it’s hot and winter’s cold. Also, while fall is a bit chilly , spring is often warm. If you live in Saigon or other tropical areas, you won’t even have a chance to experience autumn and spring. How unfortunate!

• What season is good for travelling in your country?

In my opinion, any season is good for travelling. Coastal cities are perfect desitnations during the summer months. Meanwhile , Vietnamese often travel abroad to watch the snow  with their own eyes  since we dont’t have snow in Vietnam

• Where do you like to travel to?

It depends on the weather. If it’s hot I would love to go to the beach but if it’s cold then I prefer going for a picnic in the countryside.Where do you like to travel to?

• Do you prefer to travel alone or in a group?

In a group, definitely. This is because it’s much more fun. I love having my family as my travel partners so I could  have some quality time  with my loved ones. If I ever travel solo, I probably just suffer from a very bad break up.

• Is Vietnam a good destination for tourists?

Yes and No. Vietnam is a beautiful nation with so many historic buildings and  breath-taking  natural landscapes across the country which are definitely worth visiting. However, there are also many  tourist traps  and scams for foreigners.

Feeling crushed by the high cost of travel ? Getting annoyed by the throngs of tourists bringing chaos to what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation? Finding that everything you want to book is already sold out?

Here’s a good way to skirt most of these challenges: Travel during “shoulder season.”

The definition of shoulder season varies by destination, but it typically means the period of time between a region’s peak season and offseason. This timespan can last months or just weeks. For instance, if a place’s peak season is summer and its offseason is winter, then the shoulder season would be spring and fall. Alternatively, a place may experience peak travel during a holiday weekend, but demand will drop off the weekend before or after — these times can also be considered shoulder season.

Here are five reasons why shoulder season is the best time to travel.

1. Expect to pay lower prices than for peak season travel

If you can travel on the days no one else wants to, you'll generally save. For example, the holiday season is typically one of the busiest times of the year to fly .

Flights averaged 57% more expensive when booked for the week of Christmas 2024 versus the last week of August (which is shoulder season in many places as kids return to school). That’s according to a NerdWallet analysis conducted in August 2024 of nearly 600 airfares taken from the most popular routes in the U.S. across nine major airlines.

2. You won't compete as much for coveted reservations

Those higher flight prices typically stem from supply and demand — which means demand is higher during peak season.

Increased interest leads to more competition across the board, whether for a hotel room at the price point you want or the chance to nab tickets to that concert. And that’s only scratching the surface. Restaurants are more likely to get filled, airplanes to fly with fewer empty seats and wait times to get longer, and the likelihood of a complimentary upgrade diminishes.

Book during shoulder season and you’ll vie with fewer folks for your top experiences.

3. You won't see as many offseason closures

While demand is high during peak season, sometimes demand drops so low during offseason that the places you want to visit aren’t even open. Boat tour operators might board up for the winter, and charming ski town cafes could close for the summer.

For example, January in Utah’s Zion National Park averages about 16% of the number of visitors that come during peak season in July, and most tourists will have a rough go. Ice forces certain trails to close, some roads become inaccessible to drivers, and the museum and services like shuttle buses aren’t available.

Instead, consider a trip during the September shoulder season, when crowds are at only about 85% of the park’s peak but most amenities are available. Plus, you’ll benefit from mild weather.

Around the world, hotels often take the offseason to do renovations, so the pool might become off-limits. Airlines typically cut back routes, so you’ll have less flexibility on what day or time you can fly.

But the shoulder season is less likely to entail such challenges. Travel before summer crowds arrive and you might be pleasantly surprised with a newly renovated hotel room. Head to the mountains just after the winter holidays to take advantage of still-snowy slopes without as many skiers on them.

4. Weather is generally pretty good

The shoulder season likely won’t bring the sweltering heat or storms that come with a region’s offseason. And in some cases, the weather during shoulder season is actually better than peak season.

Summer at Florida’s theme parks is often humid and muggy — and that’s before you add in the crowds of out-of-school kids. During shoulder season, you might forgo sunny summer days on the beach, but you’ll typically get temperate weather, not to mention a less sweaty smile in that photo with your favorite character.

Shoulder season in the Rocky Mountains might not entail the romanticism of white powder snow surrounding a cozy cabin. But, you can pack light and leave the parka at home.

5. You could more likely experience unique, local events

Tourist hot spots typically want year-round crowds, so they often host events, concerts and other festivities that don’t occur at times when crowds would be large anyway.

Theme park food festivals are among the most common shoulder season delights. Southern California theme park Knott’s Berry Farm typically hosts its annual boysenberry festival from March to April. Disney hardly has an off-season, but May is basically the shoulder season (filling the gap between spring break and summer). And May is one of the best times to visit Disney , with special events like a Star Wars-themed festival and Pixar Fest to create buzz.

Hawaii comes alive in the fall with festivals spanning multiple islands, including the annual Waikiki Ho‘olaule‘a, which is a giant block party on Oahu, and the Kauai Mokihana Festival, a weeklong celebration of Hawaiian culture.

It's the age-old debate: is summer or winter prime time to travel? Some people probably think that the simple  answer is to say summer when in reality, we don't think that's the case at all. Some people like going away in the summer months and vice versa, and we can understand their reasoning on both sides.

Today, we're looking at the reasons behind wanting to go on holiday during the cold winter season or the hot summer months. As you can probably imagine, there's no one correct answer. But let's face it, we're all going to fall on one side or the other.

10 SUMMER - The Hot Weather

It’s a pretty obvious point to make, and that’s why we’re going to make it straight out of the gate: 99% of the time if you’re going on holiday during the summer, you’re going to be getting some decent weather regardless of where you’re going. Of course, that much is clear.

This is especially pleasant if you end up going when your home country is experiencing some bad weather, giving you a bit of a release from the everyday norm. At the end of the day, being in the sun is super nice.

We’ll counter that last point with the exact opposite: the cold weather. We aren’t here to suggest that either one is better for you in terms of your health, but sometimes, it’s just nice to wrap up all warm and take in the fresh, cold air on any given day or night.

There are a few holidays here and there in the summer, but none that can be deemed "official." In the wintertime, though, you’ve got Fireworks Night, Halloween, New Year’s Eve and, of course, Christmas Day.

Traveling during the holidays always ensures that a themed element will be introduced into the equation, and we absolutely love that. It just cheers you up and makes everything feel more magical – kind of like all those sappy films we enjoy (but you didn’t hear us actually say any of that out loud, obviously).

6 SUMMER - It's More Comfortable

Winter holidays are pretty uncomfortable, due to how many clothes you’ve got on or how much the cold winds can impact your mood. In the summertime, however, you can often ensure a higher level of comfort, if only by doing one thing: chilling by the pool.

That sounds really stereotypical, but the best part is that it doesn’t even need to be that. You could be reading a book, having a drink or just listening to some music, but either way, we can just about guarantee you’re going to feel much more relaxed in the long run.

The peak times in the summer are so expensive, especially when it comes to flights. You can try and get cheaper hotels but they’re almost always going to be pretty unflattering, which is a risk that many of us who like traveling don’t want to take. Like, ever.

In the winter, quite literally everything is a little bit cheaper. Now we know and understand that money doesn’t make the world go round, but that’s not the point we’re trying to make. 4 SUMMER - Beach Sports

Whether it be surfing, volleyball or going out on a jet ski, beach sports are amazing and you almost certainly can’t do half of them during the summertime. You’ll often get discount rates if you book far enough in advance, you’ll feel like you’re on a real adventure, and most importantly, you’ll allow your troubles to drift away.

That sounds like a very cheesy advertisement, but it’s true. Life is pretty tough and can get really serious pretty much all the time, so you need to be able to relax with some mindless fun.

3 WINTER - The Snow

In countries like the United Kingdom, it pretty much becomes a national crisis when the snow falls down, almost as if most of the residents have never seen the substance before. In the grand scheme of things, though, snow is really fun. It makes so many settings look much brighter with a lot more life, and in addition to that, we just absolutely love throwing snowballs.

When it’s super sunny in the summertime you’re not even going to come close to seeing any snow, and that’s a shoot. Mic drop.

2 SUMMER - Summer Cocktails

Open your mouths wide ladies and gents, because summer cocktails are upon us and they are delicious. You don’t need to have any kind of specific alignment in order to enjoy them, but let’s face it, they are definitely better to consume in the winter as opposed to the summer.

My husband would solidly disagree, but I have my reasons as to why autumn is the best season.

You get to wear the comfiest clothing and galavant around sipping on hot cider drinks . All of the solid foods involved with autumn are delicious, too, even that weird canned cranberry sauce. Any overindulging is hidden by all of the oversized sweaters you’ll pull out from underneath the bed.

It’s just the best time, especially if you’re somewhere with excellent fall foliage.

People love autumn because it tends to bring color to the surrounding landscapes. There’s also something rejuvenating about a crispness in the air.

Reasons Why Autumn Is the Best Season

Autumn is the best season because it sets the stage for things many people like to do: get comfy, cuddle up with a good book underneath that favorite plush blanket, and even reflect on the passing time as the leaves float down from the trees.

Too much? It won’t all be that serious. Move over, hot girl summer. Autumn is my favorite season for a reason. Well, there are 16 of them, actually. Here we go!

1. Fall foliage meets all expectations.

Why is fall the best season? Fall is the best season because it’s the perfect time to get cozy and embrace the changing weather. At its best, it’s also the most scenic.

My first New England trip in October met all expectations when it came down to leaf-peeping. Yes, I’m using the phrase “leaf peeping.” It’s cute and it’s fun and it’s a super fun thing to do during autumn, so get over it.

There is just nothing like a real autumn where those leaves start turning colors and the trees are set ablaze with oranges, reds, and yellows. It tops the best things about fall.

I’m not being hyperbolic when I say I felt something akin to a gut punch when I really saw it for the first time.

Vermont is the best state for fall foliage from what I’ve seen so far, in my humble opinion.

Fun fact: Peak leaf peeping varies from year to year, but early to mid-October is likely your best bet for foliage in the Northeast if that’s what you’re after.

2. The sound of crunchy leaves is a delight.

As you’re moseying down your favorite trails or just taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood, you’ll likely hear that signature crunch that’s so delightful in the fall months. Those are the leaves you were peeping at a few days to weeks prior.

If they haven’t formed that signature mulch that happens in Chicago around November , it’s all still a good time. Crunch away.

3. Fall means excellent hiking weather.

Even in San Diego , a mostly dry climate, we would need to wake up pretty early to hit the trails if we wanted to get a hike in during the warmer months.

As long as it’s not pouring rain, fall makes for some excellent hiking weather. It’s one of the top reasons to love fall if you love being outdoors. It’s cooler throughout the day, meaning you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to hit your favorite trails.

You may still want to do that to avoid the humans on said trails, but that’s another thing altogether.

4. Your favorite shows are back.

Maybe you don’t think the summer hiatus is a big deal, but once that cooler weather hits, you’ll be happy that your old favorites are back to get you through to warmer days.

It’s just pretty great to cozy up and turn on that show you’ve been waiting for, just to see your favorite character killed off if it’s Shonda Rhimes.

The return of football is also something many enjoy about the season of autumn. I’m not one of those people but can appreciate it when my husband wins his annual Fantasy Football league. I like money.

5. Fall flavors are delectable.

I’m not trying to trigger anyone here about pumpkin spice. It’s fine, and honestly, nothing people should be getting so angry about every year.

Guys, there are bigger things to get so upset about.

I’m talking about everything else. It’s maple and cider and salted caramel. It’s cranberries and warm apple pies and spiced hot beverages and caramel apples.

Yes, it’s also pumpkin. Throw it in a pumpkin pie and it’s likely less offensive to you, right?

Fall flavors are my favorite flavors, and they just taste better when the weather’s getting all crispy and you’re inside all warm and tucked in with a hot cider. If you’re nice to me I’ll even share.

6. Hot drinks are in.

I mentioned this a little bit above, but it bears repeating. Fall drinks are delicious.

Tell me about a time you had some hot spiced cider that didn’t end in the comfiest cozy night of your life.

Give me a reason why you don’t like mulled wine that doesn’t include the fact that you’re a monster.

Maybe I’m being too dramatic, but I haven’t even mentioned pumpkin spice. Again, there are better things. There are also worse things. It’ll be all right.

7. Fall fashion is forgiving.

You look beautiful just the way you are, even if the pandemic hit you harder than most. When September hits and you’re living in a place with seasons , it won’t matter soon enough anyway.

Fall fashion is so forgiving.

Throw on an oversized sweater and leggings and all of a sudden you’re some supermodel. Work the room, friend . Work those leaves.

8. Sweater weather is comfy.

On top of hiding all of your favorite lumps, the autumn season just begs for clothes that are all kinds of comfy .

As those cold spells hit the closer you get to winter, nobody will care what you’re wearing anyway. I mean, they likely don’t care anyway, unless you’re trying to enter the local grocery store without shoes or a shirt.

Autumn is about comfort. It’s about staying warm. You don’t need to worry about being too trendy when those teeth are chattering. You just want to warm up. That hot cider will help.

9. Summer tourism is over.

There are some places that you really should visit in the summer months.

Most places, though, are better in the fall. The best national parks are less crowded because the kids are back at school. People are generally traveling less as they feel that chill in the air. You’ll have more goats to yourself .

Throw a scarf on and quit being a baby. Outside of New England during leaf-peeping season, there’s a whole world waiting for you out there at budget-friendly prices.

That’s because you’re traveling in the off-season.

Note: Traveling abroad over the Thanksgiving holiday is one of my favorite things to do. Domestic travel can become terrible, especially air travel, but most Americans stay put come November. That means fewer Americans abroad. Huzzah! Your family will understand when you break the news to them if they’re cool.

Traveling throughout New England in the fall is awesome, by the way. I was in no way disparaging the experience, as it’s the thing bucket lists are made of.

10. You’re not sticky all the time.

Why is autumn better than summer? Autumn is better than summer because summer heat can get pretty unbearable, especially if you’re dealing with humidity where you live. That’s likely most of the country.

I was lucky enough not to deal with that during our time in San Diego , but it really was like a slap in the face when we returned to the Midwest temporarily afterward.

It was a wet, hot, sticky slap in the face.

11. The pumpkins have eyes.

Come October, the pumpkin game gets intense. They come in all different shapes and sizes. They come in all different colors.

Some of these gourds even have eyes.

I’m saying they have eyes painted on by local fall-loving artists, not actual eyes.

Embrace the pumpkin craze. Buy one. Buy another one. Hold them dear until they rot on your porch.

12. Goodbye, bugs.

Can you tell there have been moments in my life where I’ve really liked sending summer on its way?

I love autumn because cooler temperatures mean fewer bugs. A Wisconsin lakehouse weekend sounds like a great time until a mosquito bites you on the face and then comes back for more in an even harder-to-scratch area.

Ticks and fleas are also less prevalent as temperatures go down, but you should still take precautions if you’re out hiking. Bring the bug spray and hose yourself down with that DEET, even in the fall.

Note: DEET is your best protection against preventing tick bites and the worst diseases that can come from them. Brian has had a bout of Lyme disease. He’s fine today, but we didn’t know that then. It’s scary, but mostly preventable if you protect yourselves.

13. October is when things get spooky.

Spooktober is one of my favorite things about fall. I do not like scary movies. I watch them in between my fingers just in case that helps. I’m afraid of the dark for no reason other than it’s dark.

I love Halloween, though. When we’re invited somewhere fun for the holiday, I love dressing up. Tell me my husband and I didn’t nail Hall & Oates.

I love spooky experiences, like haunted forests, haunted houses , and towns like Salem known for their witchy pasts.

I just likely won’t sleep much after, and that’s my cross to bear for my love of Spooktober. If you’re already decorating your hours in September for a little Spooktember, by the way, I salute you.

14. It’s easy to visit snuggle city.

When you’re feeling kind of chilly, it’s only natural to want to snuggle up with the nearest honey.

That can mean your dog , too. Mine is an excellent snuggler who pretends like she’s never been told she isn’t allowed on the furniture.

If you don’t have a loved one around or a furry friend, you really should get a dog .

It’s also fun to curl up with your favorite blanket and dust off that book that’s been on your shelf for way too long. I’m sure there’s something on Netflix you haven’t watched if the idea of that is too painful.

15. Winter is coming.

Now, hear me out. Winter is terrible. We left the Midwest for San Diego for seven years because of things like Chicago’s snowmageddon and the city’s dibs habits when it comes to saving parking spots after big snowstorms.

That makes fall feel all the more urgent. It forces you outside to take in those last breaths of summer if you’re lucky.

There’s always that week of unseasonably warm weather in October, at least there always was when I lived in the Midwest .

Fun fact: The hottest Halloween in Chicago was in 1950, when temperatures hit 84 degrees. I can only imagine the spicy Disney princess costumes that year.

16. There’s no judgment about the weird stuff you do.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to dress up as something real niche for Halloween. As long as you’re not culturally appropriating anyone, you do you.

Maybe you’re sick of all the attention on Movember and want to take the beauty routine down a notch. I promise that your husband won’t care if you miss leg day.

I’m talking about shaving your legs, not working your calves.

If you’re only here because you’re writing an autumn season essay for a teacher lacking imagination in this moment — it’s OK, she’s overworked and underpaid — just remember this: fall is a time for reinvention.

This is certainly not scientific polling, but I side with the autumn enthusiasts.

Why Fall Is My Favorite Season

Fall is my favorite season because it’s when I feel my best. Why is autumn the best season? When I’m experiencing a true fall with its crisp temperatures and the smell of crunchy leaves underfoot, I feel joy. I also don’t care how basic it is to feel a pull toward fall. When it’s done right, fall is the best.

Now, when it’s done wrong, as is often the case in the Midwest and its gloom and rain, I could take or leave it. That’s where fall in New England comes in, though. There’s not much that’s more whimsical than a steaming cup of cider up against a backdrop of those fall leaves.

Fall Is the Best Season for Travel

Your Flight: I use a variety of tools to find cheap airfare, but if you’re looking to book during a particular period of time, especially during busy times (e.g. leaf-peeping season in New England), you should search on Skyscanner .

It’s great for searching when you’re more flexible, too, as it allows you to compare travel based on length of travel, departure date, etc.

For adventurous folks who travel on the reg, I also subscribe to  Going , formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights. You’ll get cheap flight deals from your home base straight to your inbox, especially during the fall season.

Your Accommodations: I generally recommend websites like Booking.com and Hotels.com for your accommodation needs. They both offer loyalty programs and now offer listings that are more of the home or condo rental variety. Vrbo has become my go-to Airbnb alternative.

I guess the autumn is the best time to travel. As it is neither too hot nor too cold, people will feel comfortable to go out. Besides, as the foliage of trees will turn yellow or red, you will find the picturesque views all around you. Wherever you go, you will experience a memorable trip.

When in spring and autumn, the temperature is neither too cold nor too hot, people in China tend to hike in the mountains, or go running. When it comes to summer, people can choose more physical activities like swimming, camping in the forests and playing balls, etc. But in winter, people believe it not suitable for outdoor exercises, so they prefer to stay at home for resting.

I’m afraid there is no apparent unfavourable season in my favourite, but relatively I believe summer is least favourite season because it’s much too hot everywhere which will bring inconvenience to everything, especially for people to fall asleep at night.

There are four distinctive seasons in my country. Basically, summer is the hottest season of the year, while winter is coldest. Autumn and spring are not severe seasons. Moreover, in summers people love to wear light clothes while in winter use of woollen clothes increase. Summer and winter are longer seasons, while autumn and spring are shorter ones.

As for my hometown, I guess the autumn is the best time to travel as in the Huangshan Mountain, it is neither too hot nor too cold, people will feel comfortable to hike. Besides, it will rains a lot which will have the stunning cloud sea in the mountain.

When Is The Best Time To Travel The World?

I’ll never forget stepping off the plane in Cape Town in shorts and a T-shirt in mid-July and watching my breath curl upwards. I’d forgotten winter and summer were reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.

My first shopping stop? Long underwear…

If you’re planning a vacation and trying to decide the best time to travel, you’ve come to the right place. The most critical factor to ensuring the best possible vacation is the weather. So finding the best weather around the world and planning your trip to coincide can help determine when to go. However, weather can be unpredictable in some places, making the best times to travel limited.

From  visiting Madrid  to  experiencing Africa , this post will take you through the best time of year to visit each country and why.

Choosing the best time to visit a destination

It’s a sad fact: weather and climate don’t come with guarantees, especially when global warming makes temperatures even more unreliable.

Like this day in Istanbul, when I’d planned to take a lot of photographs… and so much fog rolled in I ended up sipping coffee half the day instead.

One recent Easter holiday, British tourists accustomed to cold and rain packed their suntan lotions and bathing suits and headed off to Spain – only to find cold and rain! Had they stayed home, the heatwave in England would have kept them hot and tanned. So how do we know when is the best time to visit each destination is? 

The following color key explains what season is the best to visit your country and why:

So yes, as we know, the weather is impossible to predict and can affect the best months to visit.

To make your trip (a bit) more predictable I’ve prepared these little charts to help you decide the best time to go travel and where. But please – if you land down under in winter in your shorts, just don’t blame me! (The white squares mean “no opinion” on when to visit – it’s sometimes good, sometimes not, usually an unpredictable mixture).

Best time to travel to North America

North America is so vast it’s almost impossible to categorize its weather. My favorite traveling season is fall foliage in the northeast US and Quebec. My worst? It’s a toss-up between mid-winter in the windswept prairies and high summer in the Southeast US. 

May can be beautiful anywhere on the West Coast, as can September, making them the overall best time to visit America’s Northern regions.

Best time to travel to Central America, including Mexico

The climate for most of Central America is hot and humid – especially near the coast. To escape the heat, go upwards, into the mountains. So when’s the best time to  go to Mexico  and the Central USA? The dry season between December and April is the best time to go to Central America.

For the rest of the year, brace yourself for heavy rains and tropical storms, maybe not the best time to visit Latin America.

 Best time to travel to the Caribbean

Despite variations, weather throughout the Caribbean is relatively similar. The best time in the world to visit is sometime between November and April, although the seasons on some islands are shorter. Here, the weather abroad in April can be temperamental, but don’t let that get in your way.

The rainy season takes up the rest of the time, but of particular note is September-October, the hurricane season. Stay away if you can!

Best time to travel to South America

The best time of the year to visit South America varies. The climate for this region is incredibly diverse and the Equator cuts right across the continent. Depending on which side you’re standing, winter and summer are reversed.

In the North, when  visiting Colombia  and Venezuela, the dry season (and best time to visit) is usually winter, sometime between Christmas and Easter. In Ecuador, visit Quito between June and August.

In the Amazon, humidity is just about 100% most of the time with violent storms in the afternoon, usually timed to coincide with the one daily incoming flight. The best time to visit the Amazon is June to October. If you’re  visiting Rio , the June to September summer is pleasant, although the water can be a bit cold.

Along the western coast of the continent, the dry season tends to be around June to October, with the season slightly longer or shorter depending on the country. The best time to travel to Machu Picchu is in winter, between May and mid-September.

Chile, more than 4000km long, has several types of climate, as does  Argentina . They range from desert through tropical to nearly Antarctic, or from bikini to parka in a single country.

Best time to travel to the Middle East and North Africa

Climate for most of this region is uniformly torrid, except for the Sahara Desert. The flatter the land the hotter the weather, especially in summer. So if you’re hot, head up to the highlands, where altitude can make winter downright cold. Coastal areas are greener and wetter – and cooler.

Best time to travel to West Africa

West Africa’s climate goes from hot and dry in the Sahel, just south of the Sahara, to hot and humid along the tropical coast. The nearer the coast, the greater the rainfall. Summers are stifling and muggy, winters dryer and cooler. 

When deciding the best time of year to go to Africa, avoid the rainy season; rain makes dirt roads muddy and travel difficult, and you’ll constantly be swatting mosquitoes.

Best time to travel to East and Central Africa

This is the Africa of the tropics, with majestic rainforests and humidity so thick you could cut it with a knife. In the northernmost part of the region, around the Horn of Africa, the weather is hot, with some areas – such as the below-sea-level Danakil Depression in Eritrea – among the hottest on earth.

The region also has some of the highest cities on the planet, with cold nights and cold winters. You might freeze, but you’ll take amazing photographs in the crystal clear light of Ethiopian winters.

Best time to travel to Southern Africa

Don’t forget: the further south you go, the colder it gets in winter. April to October, autumn and winter, are usually the best times to visit Africa’s Southern regions – no rains, warm sunny days, and cool nights. 

The rains, from November to March, are bearable as long as you are well above sea level. Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean, is a huge island with varied climates – to see the entire island, go in September or October. And if you’re there on the right day,  South Africa  will provide you with some of the most spectacular thunderstorms you’ll ever see.

Best time to travel to Europe

What is the best time to  travel to Europe ? Well, Europe’s climate tends to be relatively stable – cold in winter, which lasts from around December to February, becoming warmer as summer (July-August) nears. 

The further North you go the colder it becomes, with the northernmost tips nearly Arctic in winter and the South scorching in summer. Spring can start early and then freeze again. There are distinct rainy seasons in the autumn (October-November) although areas with Atlantic coasts seem to have longer rainy seasons. And even if London tends to be miserable in December, there’s a wonderful Christmas spirit in the city so don’t let weather alone be your judge!

Best time to travel to Central and South Asia

The winters are frigid and snow is frequent, with springtime the best time to visit Central Asia. South Asia, by contrast, is warmer and more humid, with  monsoons  for part of the year and cold winters. 

Climate is also extremely diverse; a country like India ranges from tropical in the South to temperate in the North, near the Himalayas. The best time to visit Asia for a trekking holiday could be either before the monsoons, from February to May, or after them, from October onwards.

Best time to travel to Southeast Asia and East Asia

This region ranges from temperate Japan in the North to tropical Borneo in the South. Southeast Asia has a tropical climate with plenty of rainfall, except in the more northern mountainous areas, where the weather is a bit cooler. 

The northern part of the continent is more diverse. It can be very cold in Japan in winter – with good skiing too! The weather here is not unlike that of Europe or North America’s more temperate regions.

Best time to travel to Oceania

This is the continent that groups Australia, New Zealand, and the islands of the Pacific.  Traveling to New Zealand  and  exploring Australia  are great to visit almost anytime, although Australia’s summer (December to February) can be quite hot – but that’s what beaches are for! 

Island weather differs from island to island, although they do share in common tropical wind systems and even cyclones, so check before you go.

Best time to travel if you’re looking for seasonal events around the world

The world is full of festivals, special events, championships, or cultural high points. Here is a brief sample taken from around the world… just in case this is when you want to go!

Travel season guide: when to visit our favourite destinations

Travel. It’s all in the timing. If you’ve managed to narrow down your ideal destination from the endless possibilities on offer (and if you have, could you please tell us how you did it?), the next question is: when do you go? For some countries it’s easy. Just avoid the monsoon/endless night/sub-zero temperatures/tourist hoards. For other destinations, there really isn’t a bad time.

So how do you narrow it down? Enter our handy travel season guide. These are our favourite times to visit some of our favourite destinations. Good weather, cool local festivals or a blissful lack of crowds: you’ll find them all in the suggestions below.

JAPAN – April

Why April:  Cherry Blossom season, it is the most popular and busiest time to travel to Japan but if you can stand the crowds the beauty of the blossoms trees are well worth it. Even if you’re not big on nature, this is something you’ve got to see. Hanami (花見?, lit. “flower viewing”) is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. Japan is a beautiful country regardless, but during cherry blossom it doubles in beauty, watch cities disappear under canopies of colour and national parks transform into spaces so surreal, you’ll think last night’s  sake got the better of you. Typically, the blossoms bloom somewhere between late March and early May. Part of their magic is that they’re only in bloom for a week or two – less if there are strong winds or heavy rain. For a short magical period the cherry blossoms are everywhere.

You’ll find all sorts of celebrations wrapped up in the blooming of the cherry blossom. The collective shindig is known as Hanami , which translates literally to ‘viewing flowers’. It encompasses all sorts of things: tea ceremonies, picnics, barbeques, sports and performing arts, all under canopies of blossom. Over one thousand years old, this celebration is very much a highlight on the calendar – and one you won’t want to miss. Blossoms vary slightly depending on the tree variety. The most common is a small white flower with five delicate petals. You’ll also find yellow, pink and green blossoms throughout the country. Trees in the south typically bloom before the north.

Don’t miss:   Besides checking out the blossoms, the three ‘must-dos’ are 1) an overnight stay at a traditional Ryokan in Koya San  2) A naked dip in Japan’s traditional Onsen (Hot Bath/Showers)  and 3) our Tokyo After 5 Urban Adventure and eat and drink your way around some local bars and restaurants.

Insider tip: Don’t leave home without slip-on shoes, hole-less socks (you’ll have your shoes off a lot). There’s also no need to tip in Japan.  It’s not really the custom.

BORNEO – August

Why August: Borneo’s climate is typical for a tropical region: generally hot and humid all year-round. Temperatures are usually in the high 20s for most of the year, dropping back to the low 20s at night. Rainfall tends to be in short, heavy bursts followed by glorious sunshine. Generally August and September are considered the best time to visit, with the east coast getting wetter in October, while the lands around Kota Kinabalu get drier. The trees fruit at this time too, which means orangutans can be seen grazing closer to the ground. Always a bonus.

Don’t miss:

• A Mount Kinabalu climb. Mount Kinabalu is special. At the summit, climbers are walking over mostly granite rock that has been shaped over thousands of years by wind, water and glaciers to create sweeping panoramas framed by craggy spires and an impossibly blue sky. You can’t climb Kinabalu without feeling there is something magical about the mountain. The climb up Kinabalu itself is challenging . Although it’s an accessible climb, compared to some other mountain treks around the world, the physical agility and mental strength required to both summit and descend Mt Kinabalu is intense. Because of this, and because you start summiting in complete darkness around 2am, guides become more than guides – they are coaches, mentors, protectors, motivators. They keep you calm and focused, hand you their gloves and coats if you are cold and keep you entertained and energised when you think you will never make it to the top. The challenge is worth it – seeing sunrise from the top of Mount Kinabalu is an unforgettable experience.
• The wildlife. Meeting the gentle orangutans of Sepilok is a must-do for visitors to Borneo. These orange-tinged creatures are captivating, entertaining and cheeky – and watching them play, eat and interact in the jungle of Sepilok is a privilege not to be missed. It’s also worth visiting Turtle Island ,  just north of Sandakan, Turtle Island Park is a haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles. Seeing turtles land onshore at dusk, or baby turtles hatching, is a properly unforgettable moment.
• Community Village stay. Borneo was our second destination ever.  Sapinggi Ladsou has been Intrepid’s main guide on Mt Kinabalu since we started running trips in Borneo twenty-five years ago. Over the years, Sapinggi and his wife, along with their ten children, have also welcomed Intrepid travellers into their home as part of a community village stay in Borneo. The whole family has been overwhelmingly generous with their hospitality, and they are well known and loved by the past travellers and staff who have visited them.

Insider tip:  The Poring Hot Springs are steaming hot pools of water near Mt Kinabalu, and a relaxing place to unwind after trekking the mountain. Sliding into the open-air baths is a therapeutic way to soothe your muscles. A nice outdoor reward for completing the climb.

The via ferrata : Following 2015’s devastating earthquake, the operator of the via ferrata (Mountain Torq) had completely rebuilt the trail and Intrepid now includes guided ascents of Kinabalu on our  Borneo – Hike, Bike and Kayak adventure. The Mt Kinabalu via ferrata (or ‘iron road’ in Italian) is devised to give climbers with little or no climbing experience access to rock faces normally reached by mountaineers and rock climbers. Kinabalua’s via ferrata is the highest via ferrata in the world at 3776M, and the only via ferrata in South East Asia.

CUBA – December

Cuba’s subtropical climate is ideal for travelling, with most places catching the cool trade winds that blow from the coast. This gives Cuba pleasant temperatures year-round. June, July and August are usually the hottest months, the dry season runs from November to April and the wet season from May to October. Even in the rainy season, downpours are short and heavy and shouldn’t hinder travel plans. Tropical storms and hurricanes are more prevalent in September and October but rarely cause problems for travellers.

Why December:  When it comes to Cuba, our advice is simple: go as soon as you can. Cuba has been in a time capsule: when Castro pressed pause on economic progress in the 60s, he also inadvertently pressed pause on Cuba. Visiting Cuba has been like stepping back in time – there’s almost no internet and ancient Chevrolets driving down cobblestone streets. All that is changing quickly with new American travel laws,  and that’s why Cuba it’s best to get there as soon as possible. In December, the weather will be at its very best, too.

• Classic cars and cocktails in Havana. Classic cars and cool cocktails sum up Cuba to a T, so we married them together on this Havana tour straight from the mid-century . Cruise at low altitude through the faded elegance of Havana’s grand, old suburbs, then stop for a sundowner at the swinging Hotel Nacional.   
• Music & Dance.  Cubans love to dance, and trust us, they’ll help even the most uncoordinated traveller find their rhythm. Try some Salsa, Rumba, or Afro-Cuban Conga moves. There are open-air street parties and jazz clubs, so it’s best to embrace it all and just revel in the infectious beats and lively atmosphere of Cuba’s legendary nightlife.
• Trinidad.  Havana may have gotten the reputation for being Cuba’s delightfully colourful city, but it’s Trinidad that’s Cuba’s real star. Located on the south side of the country’s centre with just over 73,000 inhabitants, Trinidad offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The town has a more relaxed energy and the brick roofs, cobblestone, and peeling paint further add to its charm. Getting out and taking a hike is definitely recommended, especially through El Cubano National Park up to the gorgeous Javira waterfall. Jump in and swim up to a cave for some bat-watching, bathe in the shallow waters for the ultimate post-hike cooldown. One of the best beaches in the world, Playa Ancón is just a short drive outside Trinidad. White sand, turquoise water, few people – the winning combo? Sip from a rum-filled coconut courtesy of a man with a horse-drawn cart, then kick things up a few notches with a beach BBQ organized by your guide.

Insider tip: Cuba’s much bigger than it looks, and the public transport is generally slow, complicated and subject to frequent cancellations and delays. We use private transport to get around, but if you’re looking for plenty of beach time you might prefer our Cuba sailing holiday . Or we also have cycling trips in Cuba.

SRI LANKA – January

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s throughout most of the year. The dry seasons are June – August and December – March.

January is the busiest time for our best-selling trip – Circle Sri Lanka . It’s the best time to visit the south and south west beaches as well as the hill country. Dry, sunny, and not too humid. Sri Lanka is a hot destination in more ways than one. Due to rising demand, last year we launched a Real Food Adventure in Sri Lanka , and this year we launched Sensational Sri Lanka , which goes to Jaffna in the north of the country. It’s the first time we’ve visited this area of the country since the civil war.

• Sri Lanka is a hot destination because it really does have it all – food, culture, wildlife and beaches. It’s also an easy destination for Australians to explore in 2-3 weeks, and it offers great value for money so you won’t blow the budget.
• The cultural triangle is a major drawcard for our travellers. All of our itineraries visit Kandy, Anuradhapura, spend time in Sigiriya to visit and climb Lion Rock, and in Polonnurawru we ride bikes through the ancient city.
• Sri Lankan food is also a massive drawcard – that’s why we launched our Real Food Aventure which includes flavour-filled curries and sweet desserts, the amazing Sri Lankan seafood on offer at the Negombo seafood market, and the tea plantations of Bandarawela. The elephants of Udawalawe National Park are also a highlight, and our S ri Lanka Family Adventure includes a visit to the Elephant Transit Home to learn about the organisation’s work with orphaned or abandoned baby elephants

Sri Lanka is still an emerging tourism destination, so even the main sites don’t feel too touristy. It’s also relatively small and easy to get around – but packs a punch with a huge variety. The culture of Kandy, hiking and village homestays in the jungle highlands, safaris in Yalla National Park, the southern beaches around Unawatuna, or the Northern town of Jaffna – it’s all pretty special.

When is the best time to travel in the US?

Due to its sheer size and range of landscapes, regional climates across the US vary dramatically from season to season.

Southern California generally enjoys a pleasant year-round climate — mild in winter and hot in summer, making it a great place to visit in any season. Northern California, around San Francisco, is cooler and can be prone to sea mists along the fog belt.

Hawaii enjoys a tropical climate that’s warm and inviting year-round.

The South and Southwest experience hot, humid summers but mild winters and great conditions for outdoor activities in the spring. Hurricanes can affect the Gulf and east coasts most commonly from August to October, while tornadoes can be a common phenomenon in southern and central states in the summer months.

Temperatures in the Rocky Mountains change with altitude, but summers here are generally warm and pleasant, while winters often see heavy snow making travel planning tricky and unpredictable.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in the US

Visiting the US in January - March

Winter is a good time to visit the southern half of the country — including the South , California and the Southwest, with pleasant temperatures and often sunny days. It’s also a better-value and less-busy time to visit. The nights can be cold, particularly in the deserts, but temperatures are ideal during the day for outdoor activities such as hiking and sailing.

Events & Festivals

• Mardi Gras, New Orleans’ biggest festival, culminates on the day before Ash Wednesday, with the largest and liveliest parades and street parties in the preceding few days.
• Saint Patrick's Day (March 17): The Saint Patrick's Day parade is a celebration of all things Irish. Join the party as the city and the river turns green and pints of Guinness can be enjoyed in every bar in Chicago.

Visiting the US in April

If you’re planning to visit the South or Southwest, April is an excellent time to travel, with warm, sunny weather. The national parks, forests and wetlands are lush and vibrant, wildlife is more active, and a variety of events take place in towns and cities as they emerge from winter.

• Baseball season (April to September): The baseball season is long enough to be accessible to many visitors. Catch a game in Chicago, Boston or New York for a quintessential American experience.
• Ski season in Colorado and Utah (April): The peak of the ski season in Colorado and Utah is in April, with more than enough snow covering the ground, coupled with sunny days and pleasant temperatures.

Visiting the US in May

Spring has arrived in most of the country. Sunny days reveal vivid-green vegetation, attractive prairie grasslands and wildlife newly emerged from winter. Mild temperatures mean you can explore in comfort and enjoy outdoor activities.

While Pacific storms can bring Hawaii most of its rainfall in May, the southwestern states are typically warm and dry, making it a good time to explore their natural landscapes. 

• Memorial Day takes place on the last weekend of the month and is recognized with parades and commemoration ceremonies.

Visiting the US in June

June offers the best of both worlds in the northern half of the country, as you can experience warm, sunny days without the crowds of summer. The Rockies are perhaps at their most majestic, national parks are verdant and full of life, while in cities, you can take advantage of the weather at outdoor cafés and restaurants, in parks and gardens, and by following lakeside trails and cycle paths.

It’s also a good time to visit the south, where temperatures are ideal for outdoor and water-based activities like biking, hiking, fishing or sailing. 

• Wildflowers in Colorado (June): The mountains and valleys of Colorado are carpeted in bright wildflowers in full bloom at this time of year.

Visiting the US in July - August

Summer in the northern states is the most comfortable time to explore the outdoors, with many of the region's national parks at their very best. Take a hike into Montana's Glacier National Park , see the steaming geysers of Yellowstone or stay on a ranch in the Rockies. 

In the southern half of the country, the hot summer months are filled with outdoor events, including fourth of July fireworks. The southwest attracts a dry heat and the south eastern states see humidity soar, inviting occasional thunderstorms to break up the heat.

• July 4th celebrations: A day of barbecues, fireworks, carnivals and fun events across the country to recognize the Declaration of Independence.

Visiting the US in September - October

The summer crowds have started to disperse in the southern half of the country by September, making this a quieter, better-value time to visit. However, storms are more prevalent along the eastern and central coast, with the hurricane season producing wet and windy weather. You’ll find less risk of storms further west, where temperatures are still pleasant and it’s a good time to explore the national parks of Utah and California . Meanwhile, Hawaii basks in warm, sunny days and you’ll find fewer visitors than in the summer months.

Visiting the US in November - December

Colder, shorter days mark the arrival of winter, with many areas in the northern half of the country experiencing their first snowfall in November. In southern states, the end of the year is milder and can be inclement in places, with rain showers possible. However, temperatures in the South are still pleasant. 

There’s a noticeable air of anticipation across the country as Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, approaches, when travel becomes much busier.

• New Year’s Eve celebrations: See fireworks filling the sky and enjoy parties across the US.
• Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November): A national holiday giving thanks for the harvest and the preceding year, marked with traditional parades in many cities.

When you think of fall, you probably imagine cosy sweaters, pumpkin-spiced goodies, gorgeous foliage and crunchy leaves. But did you know it’s also the perfect season for travelling? From fewer crowds and lower prices, to incredible festivals and the best seasonal food, here are 7 reasons why you should be thinking about booking a fall vacay in 2021. 

1. Travel is cheaper

Known as the ‘shoulder season’ or the ‘off-season’, fall travel offers up discounts that you just won’t get during summer. It’s one of the cheapest times of year to travel, with lower prices on airfares, hotels, train tickets, activities and even food and drink specials.

Since your cash goes much further in fall, you’ll be able to travel for longer, fit in extra excursions, and maybe even upgrade your flight. More freedom of choice means a happier traveller.

2. Ther e are fewer crowds

As the summer holiday hype begins to fade and the crowds go back to work and school, the savvy traveller is just getting started! 5. There are so many fantastic festivals

Fall brings amazing festivals all over the world. Some of our favourite fall celebrations include Oktoberfest (late September to early October), the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta (October) Dia de los Muertos (31 October to 2 November), and Diwali (October or November).

We also love Guy Fawkes Night on 5 November, with a huge fireworks display to remember the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. And you can’t forget Halloween, celebrated across the world from the United States to Ireland (where they celebrate Samhain). 

There’s also plenty of harvest and wine festivals, with delicious bounties of produce and barrels of grapes pressed for wine. Be sure to head to England’s Harvest Home Festival to see blindfolded participants compete to take down the last corn stalk, or get your buzz on at Budapest’s International Wine Festival in September.

6. You’ll i ndulge in delicious seasonal food

Fall food is in a whole league of its own. Think ripe fruits and vegetables like apples, pears and pumpkin, and some of the best wine you’ve ever had. Get hands-on and go fruit picking, wander around a farmer’s market, or sit down to a farm-to-table restaurant and indulge in delicious seasonal dishes.

You could even head to a food festival, like the Kookeet Food Festival in Bruges and the Portuguese Festival Nacional de Gastronomia in Santarém. If you want to celebrate some of the most beloved fall fare, head to Silakkamarkkinat in Helsinki to celebrate Baltic herring or La Fête de la Crevette in Honfleur for all things shrimp.

There’s also the Csaba Sausage Festival in Békéscsaba and the White Truffle Fair in San Miniato. During the fall, it’s all about letting your stomach guide your travels.

Autumn vs Fall

Autumn is used in British English and sounds a little more formal. Fall is American English, and is more commonly spoken around the world.

ADVENTURERS, BEACH GETAWAY, CITY BREAKS, FAMILY FRIENDLY TRAVEL, FOOD & WINE, NATURE, ROMANTIC

Deciding on when and where to travel next is never an easy feat. Most of us start with a specific travel theme and loosely know what we want to do whilst on vacation. It could be spending days lazing around the pool on a secluded island with a loved one or taking the kids on an action packed adventure through an entire country or region. Yet, knowing where you want to go or what you want to get out of your trip is only part of the travel planning equation. Factors such as the weather, seasonality (how busy a destination is) and prices (how cheap a destination can be) all play a role in us deciding on our final holiday spot. As one the most frequently searched online question starts with something along the lines of ‘Best time to travel to…’., we’ve broken the world down into its six climate zones where we discuss the best times to visit each zone based on specific travelling themes or goals. We hope it helps!

TEMPERATE ZONE

This area covers nearly all the United States, Europe, Southern Canada and parts of South America, South Africa, East Asia and Australia. Here summers can be hot but are usually comfortable. For anything other than snowsports summer and the end of autumn and start of spring are the ideal times to visit as temperatures are warm, rain is less common, but it remains cool enough to participate in physical activities. Beach and coastal destinations in pretty much all the temperate zones experience their low seasons in winter, with the shoulder season occurring in autumn and spring.

Spring and Summer in Europe

Summer is the peak season in all major European countries. Watersports such as surfing can be done in thinner wetsuits, and possibly just swimming costumes in more southern areas. (Bear in mind of course sea temperatures don’t always reflect air temperatures.)  Destinations such as France, Germany, Spain, and Italy can become especially crowded in both the cities (Madrid; Barcelona), countryside (Southern France and Germany) and highland areas as the accommodating temperatures make most urban and rural activities a pleasure. During the summer school holidays (mid July to the end of August), many large inland cities such as Paris, Madrid and Zurich become deserted as swarms of locals travel to coastal destinations for sun, sand and sea. The French, Italian and Swiss Alps attract many mountain bikers and hikers, as do the Pyrenees in Spain. Some care should be taken in more southern, Mediterranean areas of Europe, such as Spain, Greece and Italy, where mid-afternoon summer temperatures can be stiflingly uncomfortable, particularly in cities. Bear in mind though that a late night spent sipping wine in a southern European “plaza” is one of the real attractions of the area, especially considering many of Europe’s wine regions are in these latitudes.

Autumn and Winter in Europe

During winter, certain European towns remain crowded due to their reputations for their festive traditions and atmospheres – German Christmas markets for instance; Paris; London – anywhere that can create a romantic yuletide vibe. Well-known retail areas (again, London) are crowded at this time. Elevated areas such as the Alps become focal points for snow sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Most resorts can rely on snow until the early weeks of Spring. Beach areas experience their shoulder season in Autumn, low season in winter before picking up again usually from May onwards.

Spring and Summer in North America

Outside of heatwaves, the Northern states of the US and South Canada have warm but bearable summers. New York becomes an outdoors city, with its green spaces such as Central Park and urban rooftop bars drawing in the crowds. Many people in these areas head out of the cities to enjoy the countryside, forests, and national parks. On the West Coast San Francisco and the Bay Area becomes very liveable with its fresh Pacific ocean breezes cooling urban areas. The Pacific North-West region of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia in Canada are particularly stunning in summer, with lush, green woodland and parklands running up against beaches and blue waters. Southern California – Los Angeles for instance – can become uncomfortably hot for those not used to it as can many Southern States that border the subtropical zones including Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. 

Fall and Winter in North America

The fall in the New England region of Northeast United States is a kaleidoscope of rich autumnal colours and attracts many visitors looking to enjoy the famous fall foliage. Many areas can experience cold but manageable winters with heavy snow and temperatures many people from the southern European areas of this climate zone would find punishingly cold – think the Northern states of the US New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois and all Southern Canada. Snow sports become central to much of people’s recreational plans for many states minus those Southern US states which fall into the sub-tropical zone such as Florid, with The American and Canadian Rockies attracting hundreds of thousands of skiers and snowboarders. Similar to Europe, many urban centres attract visitors looking for that Yuletide festive glow, with the shopping areas of New York being particularly popular, as well as the prettier parts of Chicago, Boston and other areas of New England.

And the Southern Hemisphere…

Large parts of Chile also experience temperate climates, as does South Africa, Southern Australia and New Zealand. Notice how all these locations are wine producing regions, making any of them worthwhile places to visit in that regard. Japan too is neither punishingly hot or cold, making Tokyo and its other fascinating cities ripe for exploration for much of the year.  

SUBTROPICAL ZONE

This area covers northern and central Mexico, the southerly states of the United States, large parts of north, east and southern Africa, the northeast of Australia and nearly all the Middle East. Parts of India and Northern Vietnam and Thailand are also in this band. This zone often experiences hot and humid summers and mild, often wet winters with large parts subject to heavy rain or monsoons.

The United States and Mexico

Florida is the state most associated with the tropical monsoon climate common to the subtropics. Here expect a daily downpour or thunderstorm from about May until October. Be prepared for high levels of humidity. Visitors heading to Miami should aim for mid to late Spring when the temperatures remain warm but not oppressively hot and the humidity eases. In high-altitude Mexico City a highland subtropical temperature prevails, meaning warm but not uncomfortable highs peaking in May or June and mild winters. While its western coast of Baja California enjoys a Mediterranean climate Mexico’s east coast is more subtropical, humid, and prone to aggressive thunderstorms and hurricanes. Plan accordingly. Hurricane season in the Gulf of Mexico is roughly June until November.

Monsoon season in North Vietnam, including capital Hanoi and popular destinations Halong Bay and Sapa is May to October. Summer temperatures are high as is the humidity. Winter is mild with lows not often below 13C (55F) in the day but dropping to single figures at night. The best months to visit North Vietnam are outside of high summer or winter, but also avoiding the monsoon season – spring or early autumn are probably your best options. Northern Thailand also lies within the subtropical zones. The hot season (March to May) is most pronounced in the north, in places like Chiang Mai for instance, with temperatures in the 30’s C (high 80s and even 100F). Between November and February both the temperature and humidity drop making this time the most apt for travellers visiting North Thailand.

Australia and South Africa

Australia’s subtropical zone comprises most of the north-eastern coast, including most notably Queensland, home of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Brisbane is the state capital in this region. There are distinctive wet and dry seasons. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures usually peaking in January at an average of 29C (84F). Temperatures never drop dramatically, with a July average of about 21C (70F). Its wettest period is the summer months with heavy, thundering downpours. Being both drier and cooler, winter and spring are the best time for visiting Queensland, particularly the northern peaks of the zone. Take care though; tropical cyclones do occasionally hit this area and can be potentially dangerous. Much like Australia, South Africa’s climate is something of a patchwork of variations. The subtropical area is located mainly in the east comprising large areas of grassland and bushland. Both Johannesburg and Durban are in this band and experience mild, dry winters and hot, wet summers. Johannesburg, with its higher altitude is technically a highland subtropical climate but rarely gets uncomfortably cold. Kruger National Park is also in this zone, and hosts some of the best safari tours in the country. The best time for safaris in this area is the dry season between May and October when vegetation is less dense and wildlife spotting is easier. Temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, but nights can get cold. Perhaps most importantly, the beginning of this season is when elephants begin to migrate back to Kruger Park to their winter grazing spots.

South America

Large parts of Brazil and Argentina lie in the subtropical band. Notable destinations in this area include São Paulo and Buenos Aires. São Paulo, situated as it is on a plateau, has hot, not uncomfortable temperatures with highs on of about 30C (86F). It can get muggy and humid though given summer is also the wettest season. The winter is cool – but rarely cold – and dry. Day to day temperatures can vary due to São Paulo receiving both cold air from the Atlantic Ocean and warm air from inland. Air even reaches here from Antarctica, meaning some winter days can fall as far as the 15C (60F) in the region. The best times to visit are the shoulder season of spring and autumn – when the temperatures are still warm or warming up but the decreased rainfall reduces humidity. Buenos Aires in Argentina on the other hand experiences hot and humid summers, with most of the rain falling in the colder winter period. Like São Paulo the best times to visit are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) when temperatures are less oppressive than high summer and rain is less likely. One notable South American destination that also experiences a subtropical climate is Easter Island. Here it’s hot and humid in the summer with mild winters. There is no distinctive rainy season though, with rainfall distributed throughout the year. Be aware that oceanic winds can vastly reduce real temperatures here.

TROPICAL ZONE

Tropical zones are hot all year, rarely dropping below an average low of 25C (77F), and have little seasonal temperature variations due to their proximity to the equator. Rainfall and thus humidity is usually high, with monthly variations standing in for what might normally constitute seasons. Places in the tropical climate belt include all Central America, large parts of Brazil, large parts of Africa, swathes of India, and areas of south and south-eastern Asia.

Thailand has a distinct monsoon season, the Indian Ocean bringing rain from the southwest consistently between June and October. These are not the hottest months, but the high humidity can make them uncomfortable, and the rain can be torrential and potentially dangerous in some parts. The hot season is between April and June and can be oppressive, particularly in cities and inland. The average temperature in Bangkok reaches highs of 30C (86F). Between November and February both the temperature and humidity drop making this arguably the best time for visiting Thailand, particularly the Western coastal areas and islands. Bear in mind though, it gets both expensive and crowded. It should also be noted that during the cool season the eastern coast has its own monsoon season, with rains arriving from the northeast, hitting places such as the island of Koh Chang. In South Vietnam – think Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta – temperatures are high year-round, with the rainy season running from June to November and the dry season December to May. March to May can be particularly hot to the point of being uncomfortable for many. This leaves December to February as perhaps the best time to visit South Vietnam, however the monsoons in this area shouldn’t disrupt plans too much, so the rainy season shouldn’t be completely excluded as a possibility. Given India’s size it’s no wonder the country experiences a swath of differing climates. Areas in the tropical latitudes include almost all the west coast – Mumbai, Goa and Kerala experience a tropical monsoon climate. The best time to visit these areas is outside both the monsoon season and the hotter months between April and July. That leaves the winter period between October and March.

Large areas of Brazil lie in the tropical latitudes, including predictably the Amazon rainforest. Rio de Janeiro is humid and hot all year but temperatures peak in December, January and February. Meanwhile, June and July are the city’s rainiest months. Given Rio is all about the sun and famous beaches, the best time to visit would be the summer months however the spring and autumn months, (late March until May and August to October) are also excellent times to visit to avoid the peak ‘Carnival’ period. Speaking of which, Brazil’s famous carnival happens in February so if you’re keen to participate you’ll have to sweat it out in the summer heat! As for the Amazon Rainforest, it has two distinct seasons: low-water season (July – December) and high-water season (January – June). The latter is slightly cooler with temperatures of between about 22 to 30C (73 – 86F) but bear in mind the forest’s general all-year climate is very hot and very humid. The two seasons dictate the viability of certain activities. For instance, low-water season sees lower river levels to the point where some are not navigable, but hiking trails are, allowing more exploration by foot. High-water season things are of course reversed. It’s worth checking what specific activities are best in which season.

Temperatures in Bali don’t vary radically, ranging between highs of 35C and lows of 27C (80 – 95F) but the amount of rainfall certainly does. Between November and March the area receives a significant amount of rainfall, often falling for a few hours at a time before clearing. Rain generally falls in the afternoons and as the sun rises before 6am, be sure to set your alarm early to enjoy a few hours tanning by the pool. Between April and October, the rains lessens and temperatures drop slightly, making these months the most popular for visiting Bali. To avoid the crowds, visit Bali during the shoulder seasons outside of the July and August rush, think March to May and late September to late October.

Costa Rica is another destination where the purpose of your trip might dictate the best time to go. For beach based and outdoor activity themed holidays the dry season from mid-December to April is the best time to visit Costa Rica. To avoid large crowds, try later in the season, April or May for instance. Bear in mind that even in the wet season (May to November) mornings are usually sunny and bright and Pacific storms in this period bring satisfying and surfable swells to Costa Rica’s Western coast. The foliage and forests are also particularly spectacular in the rainy season. 

POLAR/SUBPOLAR ZONES

Although large parts remain inaccessible and unattractive to many there are areas towards the Arctic and Antarctic that are reachable and offer a worthwhile travel experience. Northern Canada and Scandinavia fall into these zones, as well as the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of Argentina. Tierra del Fuego, for instance, offers hiking on Martial Glacier as well as kayaking, climbing, and fishing. The most popular time to visit Tierra del Fuego is summer (December to February), although it can become busy at this time. The shoulder seasons in spring and autumn offer less crowds but manageable temperatures. In fact, despite its polar location, Tierra de Fuego can be enjoyed even during winter as temperatures don’t plummet quite as low as in, for instance, the central mainland of Patagonia. Snow sports are available during the winter but be prepared for potentially chilly winds and blizzards. 

Northern Scandinavia remains the best place to view The Northern Lights, with Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Greenland, Canada and Alaska all providing great locations to gaze on the Aurora Borealis. In terms of season the best time to see the Northern lights in Scandinavia is between September and April, when skies are darkest and clear. Various websites offer a KP Index forecast (the units used to measure disturbances in the earth’s magnetic field; the higher the KP value the more spectacular the show) to make planning a trip easier.

Speaking of Norway, the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is an ideal place to see polar bears and other Arctic wildlife. The best time to see polar bears in Svalbard is between April and September with temperatures in July reaching a balmy 10C (50F). In the Western hemisphere Arctic Greenland and Canada is ideal for wildlife spotting, in particular Baffin Bay between the two countries. The Northwest Passage is only accessible by boat in the summer months between July and September when the sea ice has melted sufficiently. Luckily, this is also peak season for wildlife in places such as Beechy and Devon Island, when polar bears spend the long summer daylight hours hunting for whales and seals. 

EQUATORIAL ZONE

Hot, wet, humid and seasonless; countries lying on the equator might seem inhospitable, but many are still well worth a visit provided one travels to the right area at the correct time. The Maldives, for instance, has consistently warm temperatures throughout the year but is best outside the monsoon periods i.e., November to April. The shoulder season after Easter is perhaps the best time overall, when the crowds are less, prices are moderate but the rains haven’t yet set in. For surfers, the season stretches from late February to November, with conditions peaking from March until May, then again from September to November depending on location and swell direction.

The equator also bisects part of the Amazon within Colombia’s, Peru’s and Brazil’s borders and represents some of the best nature and wildlife tourism in the world. The Natural Cahuinarí National Park and the Amacayacu National Park are extraordinarily rich in wildlife, plant species and riverways. The former is also not far from La Isla Los Micos, or Monkey Island, home to various species of primate. As with the Brazilian Amazon in Colombia temperatures are consistent throughout the year, ranging from about 77F to 86F. The best time to go to the Amazon depends on the type of activities visitors would like to participate in; low water season gives better hiking trail access, but some rivers dry up, whereas high water season sees those same rivers swell, giving access to more areas. Low water season is between July and December, the latter January to June.

With so many different countries and climates, it’s not always easy to know the best times to visit a particular destination. Here is some advice on how to get the most of your European vacation.

When to Visit Italy

The time of your perfect Italian holiday depends on what you plan to do there. In any case, it’s wise to avoid August – this is the month of Ferragosto . What does that mean? It’s a summer holiday that marks the beginning of vacation season for many business owners, so a lot of businesses are closed.

If you are expecting to take a dip in the sea, September is a good bet to escape the hordes of tourists on popular beaches.

When it comes to sightseeing, there is absolutely no time of the year when Italian cities aren’t crowded. The summer months get so crazy that you can’t even come near the main attractions because of all the tourists gathered there.

Late autumn and early spring still have the acceptable weather, but see a little dip in the number of visitors.

When to Visit Norway

Norway, with its remote northern position and its climate extremes can be a tricky country to visit. As it is a large and sparsely populated place, distances in Norway can be greater than you imagine.

Getting from one place to the next is easiest by car, however, driving is not recommended to visitors from November to March due to extreme winter conditions.

While summers are mild, they tend to be rainy. September and May are the prettiest months in most of Norway, apart from the frozen North. May is particularly beautiful in the fjords, when everything is melting.

The winter and summer both have an ace up their sleeve, though: winter is the time of Aurora Borealis , and with summer comes the midnight sun.

When to Visit Cyprus

This gorgeous island in the Mediterranean is the perfect spot for a summer trip – but in May !

Summers in Cyprus tend to get insanely hot inland, while the heat is mixed with high humidity on the coast. With mild winters, it never gets truly cold there.

May is the perfect time to grab a flight to one of the resorts because the sea is already pleasantly warm for swimming. Every day passes without a cloud in the sky, and the temperatures hover in the pleasant range of 25 to 30 degrees. Miles and miles of deserted beaches seem to stretch on forever, with barely a person in sight.

In the summer, Cyprus is strictly a place where you drive from the beach to the comfort of A/C, but May has the perfect weather for walking and sightseeing.

When to Visit The Netherlands

With a temperate climate, the weather in the Netherlands can be a bit unpredictable. It is cool and rainy most of the time, so no matter the season, make sure you bring an umbrella and a coat.

The famous tulips are in bloom in the spring – the end of March through mid-May is the period to go if you are aiming to visit the tulip gardens .

Pleasantly warm summers are the most crowded time of the year, and every landmark and museum is swarmed with visitors. The tourist craze dies down a little in the autumn, and the weather is still not too cold, which makes October a great time to visit.

When to Visit Germany

While  Germany  is a fantastic year-round destination, both the summer months and December are two favorite times to travel.  

The benefit of traveling in Germany during the summer is that you’re likely to enjoy beautiful sunny weather, as well as nice long days. During the summer the sun rises early (5am) and sets late (around 10pm), so you have plenty of time for enjoying all that Germany has to offer. 

But be warned: air conditioning isn’t as ubiquitous in Germany as it is in the US, and popular cities and tourist sites are likely to be crowded. Still, summer is a great time to enjoy Germany’s beaches, lakes, forests, mountains, castles, and many outdoor restaurants, cafes, and bars.

December is another favorite time to travel to Germany. Sure, it’s cold and days are short with the sun rising at 8am and setting by 5pm. But twinkling holiday lights, outdoor Christmas markets, and a festive atmosphere make this time of year absolutely magical. 

When to Visit Switzerland

Switzerland is a very popular and expensive destination to visit in Europe. In order to make the most of your trip, consider visiting Switzerland in the Spring or Fall. These are the shoulder seasons in Switzerland.

Between April and June , and September to October , the weather in various places in Switzerland is mild and pleasant for sightseeing. There are not a lot of crowds during this time, so you can score a good deal on accommodation, rail passes, and guided tours. In order to explore major attractions and festivals, set aside at least  5 days in Switzerland .

Other than museums and cruises, ski resorts in various high altitude destinations (like Zermatt) are open for Spring skiing.

When to Visit Spain

While many people only think of Spain as a summer destination, it is a wonderful country that can be visited all year round.

Spain does have amazing beaches and resort towns, but summer can be unbearably hot, humid, and crowded, so typical Spanish summer destinations like Costa Brava or Mallorca are much more pleasant to visit in late Spring or early Fall. 

For a summer vacation without the crowds and excessive heat, northern Spain is the perfect place to enjoy quiet beaches, coastal cities and villages, and natural landscapes. Alternatively, one can also spend summer in Spain exploring its non-touristy regions like Extremadura and Aragon.

Spring and Fall offer the ideal weather for taking  a road trip through Andalucia  (usually the hottest region), which also hosts spring festivals like Feria de Abril and Patios de Cordoba. They’re also great seasons for city breaks across the country, including Madrid, Valencia (that hosts the spring festival of Las Fallas), Salamanca, Zaragoza, and others.

Winter in Spain can be wonderful for winter sports enthusiasts, as it is home to about 30 ski resorts. Alternatively, those who look for warm winter destinations should head to the Canary Islands, which are great to visit all year round.

When to Visit Greece

If you’d rather avoid overwhelming hordes of tourists in popular spots like Santorini, high prices, and scorching heat, the best time to visit will be in spring and early summer in mid-April to mid-June and in autumn in September . These seasons are considered the sweet spots if you’d rather have a more peaceful and  mindful vacation  away from the buzzing crowds.

Meanwhile, if you don’t mind the crowds and would rather have vibrant night parties, July and August are considered the busiest and might be your target months. The islands, especially Mykonos, come alive as daytime comes to a close. DJs play loud music as people enjoy their drinks while dancing the night away.

One thing to note about Greece is that Easter, which runs from late April to early May , is a major festival and this might be a great time to witness beautiful religious ceremonies and experience local celebrations. Since it will be busy for locals and tourists, it’s a good idea to book your visit ahead.

When to Visit France

The Cannes Film Festival is in May so think twice about booking a stay in the town, which will be taken over by the film crowd. But if you’re in the South, then do pop over for a day and mix with everyone.

After Spring and Autumn, the best season is Winter because, again, there are fewer crowds. In December, you can enjoy some of Europe’s best Christmas markets and if you like winter sports, know that France’s slopes are world-class (not to mention all that snow-friendly food, like cheese fondue!). 

Or, you can visit southern France where you won’t have heat, but you’ll have a lot more sunshine than you’ll find in the rest of the country.

There are two periods to be avoided when possible. The first is the month of November, when the weather tends to be grey and rainy and, in northern France, often cold.

When to Visit Czech Republic

The perfect time to visit the Czech Republic is during the Spring season, as the days tend to warm quickly. This is equally the blossom period when the fruit trees lined up in most Czech roads are in full flower – and the colors are usually a beauty to behold.

The  winter weather  in Czechia can get really chilly, and during this time, most smaller places of accommodation in the country will close for the season; however, the Christmas markets in Czech Republic are a sight to see during these months.

When to Visit Scotland

Scotland’s weather is generally moderate but can be changeable. The landscape varies greatly and you’ll notice differences between highland and lowland weather if you  road trip Scotland.

July and August are the worst months for the infamous biting midges, especially if you’re planning on visiting the west coast, where they are generally at their worst.

Autumn is a fantastic time for a holiday in Scotland. The autumn colours are some of the most dramatic in the world and most of the summer visitors will be long gone.

The Best Time to Travel? The Off Season

In 2021, I spent a blissful year traveling solo across Italy. Not just because I didn’t have a companion, but because, with international travel still largely blocked due to COVID, my country felt empty. Can you imagine Venice without the crowds? I don’t have to. I lived it. So exhilarating was my time training through the boot that when travel opened back up, and the hot spots became flooded with travelers, I said to myself: never again. From now on, I would rearrange my travels to avoid the crowds—and the headaches that come with them. I will be an off-season traveler, for life.

The benefits of off-season travel can feel endless. Yes, of course there are fewer crowds to interrupt your flow, and steal your tables at the restaurants you want to eat at. I went to the Amalfi in April—April!—and found it heavenly. The weather was glorious—not too hot, but warm enough to swim. The staff at the then-new Borgo Santandrea were friendlier and upgrades more likely due to the time of year. And my room was spectacular. I still remember the scent of lemon flowers and fresh herbs in the terraced gardens. The views over the sky-merging sea were pure, with no yacht or boat to interrupt them. I even enjoyed a walk through the Amalfi’s narrow streets, devoid of the hundreds of clueless tourists, especially from cruise ships which populate the sea in High Summer.

Local engagement is always higher outside peak season, and for me, that is why we travel. Last year, I chose June for Patmos in Greece, which is never as crowded as it is in July or August. The island was greener and the heat more bearable. The crowds? Still tolerable. I arrived with a last-minute booked cabin on the BlueStar from Athens , all much more relaxing. I met with some of the home owners of the Chora, there to ‘open’ the houses, after long cold months, piling cushions and mattresses outside on the terraces to let them breathe in the sun. I swam every morning, and had lovely conversations with restaurant owners and locals. I loved the place so much I went back in August. Guess what? I regretted it.

Traveling in lesser expected times of year also help you to see a place in an entirely different way. Is it weird that I didn’t realize that St Moritz is not just a winter destination? With a major heat wave hitting central Europe and the UK I made my way to the Engadin Valley at the beginning of August. I checked in at the old-fashioned Suvretta House , at a reasonable price, where I was welcomed by name. Long walks through the valley, skinny dips in the clear waters of the alpine lakes, visits to interesting museums and art galleries kept me very busy. And I wore cashmere in the evenings, for the outdoor cinema. For the rest of August I was in London . And it wasn't that bad. I found it fairly easy to book my favorite restaurants , I went to see ballets at the Royal Opera House and a couple of plays at the theater. And reconnected with some good friends. A trick about cities and seasons? They are amazing in the summer, when the people who live there or normally visit, flock to the outdoors.

But of course, that means that the sea is best outside of summer, too. I went to one of my lifelong loves, Capri , in September, because, yes, July and August are just too popular, too expensive, too hot. And I fell in love with it again. I stayed at La Palma, the new hotel, chic in every single detail, and I did all the things I love: early morning hikes, swimming by the Faraglioni, with no fear of being decapitated by the hundred of speed boats of High Summer, sunset spritzes at Bar Tiberio in the piazzetta, without having to queue (or beg) for a table. One October, I did St Barts . I stayed at the wonderful Eden Rock (upgraded again) and loved it. The island was not full, a paradise. One day I found myself swimming alone at Colombier Beach, with the whitest sand and the most intense turquoise sea.

As I write this in tail end of winter, I am sitting in my hotel room in Venice , the newly opened Violino d’Oro . Out of the window, the cold and misty lagoon meets my gaze. It’s marvelous. Venice in winter is magical: the fresh air, the cozy small restaurants with dimmed lights, the noise of the boats crossing. With not so many tourists, you really own the city. The joy of the off season.

The 3 Seasons of Travel | When It’s Best and NOT Best To Go!

There are are typically “three seasons” in the travel industry. here’s the ins and outs of the “when and how to” go and travel., by simon vaughan | outpost travel media .

In the world of travel there are three distinct seasons—high, low and shoulder season. And though they’re all rather self-explanatory, it might be productive to shed more light on each. The cost of a trip in high season is (as you might imagine) high. The cost of a trip in low season is (as you might’ve guessed) low. And the cost of a trip in shoulder season can be shouldered by most travellers. But what does this really mean?

For bargain-seeking sun worshipers, it goes without saying that you avoid summer, Christmas, March Break/Spring Break, lest you pay big bucks for exactly the experience that was half the price just a few weeks earlier. But if wiggling your toes in sun-baked sand while slurping an umbrella’d concoction isn’t your wanderlust, how does seasonality work?

In the most simple terms, three main factors affect the seasonality of travel: supply/demand, weather and events.

A lot of people can only travel during regular holiday periods . Anyone in university or working in education or with a child in school is limited to travelling during summer or key holiday periods. Since this encompasses a swath of the population, travel during these times is categorized as in the high season, and is often accompanied by a premium.

That’s supply and demand, and it generally affects price whether you’re looking to travel down south, up north or any popular destination in between. If you have any control at all, try to be flexible, and avoid the high traffic season of travel!

Then there are events . Unless you’re actually attending the Olympics or World Cup, it’s usually best to avoid cities or countries hosting big events because airfares and hotel rates become so astronomical they can toss up the GDP of a few fair-sized nations! The same applies for annual celebrations like Rio’s Carnival, New Orleans’ Mardi Gras or Toronto’s film festival. If you like to drink in the atmosphere during a great event, then absolutely go for it—otherwise, stay away.

But if you like to take advantage of improved infrastructure, brand new hotels and the buzz that accompanies such big events, try travelling just before it starts or as soon as it ends when great deals are to be had. A bit of research with the local tourism board or chamber of commerce can tell you what events are happening, including large conventions that can occupy thousands of hotel rooms, which can help avoid higher prices.

The third factor is weather. With the tumultuous and unpredictable climate patterns of recent years, it can be difficult to determine precisely when the weather will be good, and when it will be bad, but some seasons are still fairly solid.

Monsoon season in parts of Asia can really put a damper on your trip; northern Europe in November and December is generally cool and wet with short days; and deserts should be avoided during the summer unless you are seeking sunstroke and dehydration. But beyond that, lower prices due to weather are often worth a gamble.

Hurricane season in the Caribbean and Central America usually means lower prices but odds are pretty good that you won’t get a massive funnel cloud and 200 kph winds messing with your shuffleboard game—although the chances of overcast days and some rain are definitely greater. Much of Africa’s safari destinations have two rainy seasons: short rains and long rains.

Short rains usually start in the late afternoon and continue through the night. If you’re staying in a lodge or hotel your biggest inconvenience will likely be muddy tracks during game drives but if camping, you’ll definitely need a seriously water-proof tent. Rates are always lower during the short rains but as the long rains are very wet, many safari companies don’t even operate as roads are often impassable.

Always bear in mind that summer in the northern hemisphere is winter in the southern and that although somewhere like Australia may always look sunny and hot in the brochures, their winters—especially in places like Melbourne or Tasmania—can be quite chilly and damp.

Of course, sometimes destinations that should be low season because of one factor are impacted by another factor and become high season. Las Vegas should be cheaper in the summer when the heat is stifling, but because of its popularity with families, discounted rates aren’t as good as should be expected. Likewise, while most children are back at school in early September, Europe’s high season often continues through October because the weather is usually still good and traditional tourist spots are less crowded and therefore more appealing.

Here are 5 tips to being a “seasoned” traveller |

1) Be open to a little rain. Do you really mind a bit of cloud and rain if it cuts your bill in half? Find out exactly what rainy season means in your destination. It might only be a few hours in evenings and overnight when you’re safely tucked-up in your room or sleeping bag.

2) Double-check local events and holidays. Chinese New Year might not be a big deal at home, but if half of Asia is travelling and staying in hotels at that time, you might find the cost of accommodation and domestic flights doubled.

3) Don’t be hemispherically-centric. Summer in the north is winter in the south…and if it’s winter in the south, local rates are likely cheaper despite it being high season at home. Travel based on the seasonality of the destination, not of your home.

4) Travel in the shoulder-season . Seasons are created based on experience and what’s normal , but like international borders, they’re often a bit arbitrary. The sun doesn’t start shining on the very day that high season starts despite the fancy price grids. In fact, chances are good that the weather just before or after high season will be just as good as high season itself but considerably less expensive.

5) Consider what’s most important. If your main purpose for visiting east Africa is a once-in-a-lifetime ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro you might want to splurge for the high season rates or else you could find yourself stranded at the base gazing skyward at a raging storm that’s just deprived you of your dream. Sometimes a high season premium can provide a bit of insurance against disappointment. *

’Tis the season for vacations, so let me make my pitch that the best travel is not lounging at a beach resort but rather journeying into a different world. We all need relaxation at times, but nothing beats the thrill of a trip of discovery and the education that comes with it.

Mark Twain once observed that “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.” In that spirit, I’ve long urged young Americans to take gap years before college or junior years abroad . (One high school reader of such an essay, Spencer Cohen , ended up taking a gap year partly in Japan, became an Asia hand and is now a colleague at The Times.)

Still, there are risks, less of violence (the U.S. has more guns than other countries) than of having your passport and credit cards stolen. So I preach both travel and prudence, and on a recent book tour , I found myself often asked about travel advice I had mentioned in my memoir. So let me share a few tips for the vacation season:

1. The most memorable travel often involves encountering something unfamiliar, so consider escaping the herds parading through Paris. Indonesia, Ghana, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Morocco and Bolivia are generally safe, far cheaper than Europe and offer indelible experiences. I’ll never forget venturing deep into the Potosí silver mines in Bolivia, exploring a grim slave castle in Ghana that dispatched prisoners to slavery in America, learning how to use a blowgun while staying with families in their longhouse in Indonesia’s Borneo rainforest. The world awaits us!

2. Some of the places that you find most culturally distant may be right here in the United States. A teenager from an affluent family in the New York or Boston areas would step into a different world by taking a ranch job in Wyoming. And this is the kind of travel that is not only affordable but actually pays for the experience.

3. Be spontaneous. As a law student in 1982, I spent five weeks backpacking through the Middle East and met a couple of Palestinian students on a West Bank bus; I jumped off at their stop and spent a memorable day with them in their refugee camp hearing about their frustrations and dreams (I wrote about reuniting with them last fall). And while on a bus in the Sahara, I accepted an Algerian man’s invitation to visit his village — which turned out to be a warren of underground burrows to protect families from the extreme heat, the most unusual residential architecture I’ve ever seen. In each case, I was with a couple of friends, which made it seem safer to put myself in the company of people I’d just met, and obviously one should be as judicious as one is spontaneous.

4. One occasionally hears that adventurous travel is just for men, but some of the most accomplished foreign correspondents and overseas photographers are women, as are a majority of Peace Corps volunteers. As a man, I don’t face the same risks that women face, but I have seen female travelers — disproportionately from Australia and New Zealand — thriving as they backpack through the most remote places. Some have suggested the purchase of a cheap wedding ring; a $20 band and a fabricated husband can help keep pests away.

5. Carry a decoy wallet. If pickpockets grab it, let them run off — only to discover that it contains just a bit of cash for street purchases, a day pass for the subway and an expired credit card. But do remember to let the pickpockets escape. Years ago, in Lima, Peru, I instinctively jumped a pickpocket who was trying to grab my friend’s decoy wallet, forgetting that he had nothing much in it; next thing I knew we had a melee and a gun was being fired.

6. Carry your passport and valid credit cards and cash in a pouch that loops on your belt and is tucked inside your pants. Travelers often carry travel pouches round their necks under their shirts, but these are visible and sometimes get stolen. While I’ve had bandits make me take off my shoes and socks while searching for cash, nobody has found my pouch in my pants (I dare mention this only because I assume robbers are not big readers of my column).

7. Carry a small cable lock (those for skis are perfect) to lock your bags together so one doesn’t run off while you’re sleeping in a train or on a bench at the train station.

8. Never check a bag for a flight because then it will get lost. That means packing light and taking quick-dry clothes suitable for washing in a hotel sink. I’m fond of travel clothing from a company called Clothing Arts , and I also rely on ultralight backpacking gear such as a tiny Black Diamond or Petzl headlamp that is invaluable when the power goes out.

9. If you’re getting into a taxi or other car in a location that seems at all dubious, use your phone to photograph the license plate before you get in. The driver may wonder if you’ve texted it to a friend. And women can look for female drivers if they exist.

10. My editor doesn’t want me to say anything that might encourage readers to try something dangerous, so I won’t suggest that there is nothing like the view while riding on the top of a train in Sudan . (That was in my dissolute youth, and today I definitely disapprove of riding on top of trains.)

11. People worry about terrorists, but the most likely serious risk is probably a vehicle accident. Motorcycle taxis common in low-income countries can be perilous, while buses and trains are safer (inside trains only!).

12. Now forget all the fears this article has conjured. Go have fun. Travel should be as enjoyable as it is eye-opening. If you take precautions it will be.

This Lesser-known Fall Foliage Destination Is the 'Cherry Capital of the World' — How to Plan Your Visit

Traverse City, Michigan, is a popular summer destination, but the fun continues into fall.

Traverse City, Michigan, has already made its mark as an exceptional summer destination , with sandy beaches , rolling vineyards, and lakefront views. Plus, it’s long been considered the “Cherry Capital of the World,” with roadside stands selling the summer harvest and blossoming cherry trees announcing the arrival of spring.

But come autumn, Traverse City tends to fall off travelers’ radar, which is a shame since summer is really only the start of the fun. 

When the weather starts to cool, the orchards, vineyards, and forest surrounding the city begin their colorful shift and the fall apple harvest begins. Bushels of apples replace cherries at local farm stands and the area’s U-Pick orchards prepare for apple pickers. (Plus, the arrival of apples means cider donuts, apple cider, and hard cider aren’t far behind.)

Here’s how to plan an idyllic fall visit to Traverse City, the land of cherries and apples:

What to Do (and Eat)

Taking a scenic drive from your home base in Traverse City will get you oriented and set the tone for the entire trip. The tourism board has put together five fall drives that all start and end in Traverse City and are known for their fall colors.

We recommend starting your journey driving along the Old Mission Peninsula, which juts into Grand Traverse Bay north of the city. Along the way, you’ll pass several orchards and wineries, which tend to be fully decked out in fall foliage by mid-October. 

You’ll spot several orchards, farms, and wineries if you decide to explore the region by car, but a few are not to be missed. At Rennie Orchards you’ll find 19 varieties of apples that you can pick yourself, while the neighboring Myrtle & Maudes expands the fall celebration to include a pumpkin patch, apple cider slushies, and special events like bonfires and football games displayed on an outdoor big screen. 

To the west of Traverse City sprawls the family-owned Jacob’s Farm , which is known for its elaborate corn maze, along with U-Pick orchards and an on-site restaurant. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for fall baked goods and fresh cider, head to Gallagher’s Farms , another family-owned farm that has a market and bakery.

What to Drink

Fall is cider season in Traverse City, so do as the locals do and embrace it. In addition to fresh-pressed apple cider at the area’s farms and orchards, you’ll find several cideries that turn local apples into delicious hard cider. 

Townline Ciderworks between Elk Rapids and Traverse City is a longtime favorite. They’ve been growing apples for 60 years and making hard ciders for a solid 20. Across the bay, you’ll find Souls Squeeze Cellars and Suttons Bay Ciders , the latter of which has lakefront views from its tasting room. 

If you’re not a cider fan, you’ll find a hearty handful of breweries scattered throughout downtown Traverse City and there’s the Traverse City Beer Week running from Nov. 8–16.

Where to Stay

There are plenty of quaint, boutique properties scattered throughout the Traverse City area. Favorites include the new Alexandra Inn , which has a rooftop terrace overlooking the bay and 32 luxury guest rooms — each with a view over the water.

Vacations ... aren't they great? There's nothing like heading to a beautiful tropical island in the Caribbean, Florida or the Gulf Coast in the summer or fall. "Travel insurance has become an essential part of travel planning for travelers vacationing in the Caribbean or Southeast seaboard during the Atlantic hurricane season [June through November]," says Stan Sandberg, co-founder of TravelInsurance.com.

But even if you've bought coverage or thought a credit card travel insurance policy covered you, a lot can still go wrong.

Thinking that hurricane season wraps up in the early fall

"Some people don't realize that hurricane season isn't confined to the summer months," says Beth Godlin, president of Aon Affinity Travel Practice.

In reality, hurricane season runs through Nov. 30, according to Godlin. So, you'll want to keep an eye on the weather and your travel insurance all the way through to the start of December.

Not buying travel insurance before a storm is named

If there's one thing you should remember about protecting your vacation investment during hurricane season, it's this: Once a storm is named, it's too late to buy travel insurance.

There's an important reason behind this.

"Insurance covers the unexpected," says Jenna Hummer, public relations director of Squaremouth (a company that provides comparisons of travel insurance from major U.S. providers, "so once something is considered 'foreseen' — in this case, when a tropical storm or hurricane has been named — you can no longer get coverage for that storm."

Waiting to purchase travel insurance during hurricane season

It's no surprise, then, that every travel insurance expert I interviewed had the same advice if you're planning to travel during a period when hurricanes could occur. They recommend buying your coverage as soon as you book your trip.

If you're seeing reports that a hurricane is about to land in your destination or may close your home airport, you've likely already missed the window to cover your trip.

Thinking you can cancel your trip because a hurricane occurred at your destination 

"A common misconception is that if a hurricane occurs near your destination, you can cancel your vacation and be covered," Hummer says.

But the fact that a hurricane made land fall at your intended vacation destination before you did does not necessarily mean that you can cancel and be reimbursed.

According to Hummer, if your hotel is uninhabitable — meaning it's not open or has no electricity or running water — then you would be covered. However, if the surrounding area is dealing with damage but the hotel is still open, "You're on the hook to pay for your vacation."

Not knowing what your travel insurance will cover

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans will include trip cancellation and interruption coverage, trip delay coverage and baggage loss and delay coverage.

"Trip cancellation and trip interruption will reimburse lost or unused prepaid, nonrefundable expenses due to a hurricane making it impossible to get to your destination," Sandberg says. "Many plans will also provide coverage if there is a mandatory evacuation at the destination. A few plans will even provide coverage in the event there is a NOAA hurricane warning at your destination during your trip dates."

Trip delay coverage will reimburse you for unexpected travel costs such as food, transportation, internet service and lodging when your flight is delayed for an extended period of time.

"Keep in mind, though, trip delays are not typically a covered reason for cancellation, and most policies won't reimburse you if you choose to cancel because of a trip delay," Godlin says. "However, your benefits may include reimbursement for the part of your trip you missed. For coverage to kick in, some trip delay terms require a minimum length of delay, which can range anywhere from four to 12 hours. Some terms may also only cover delays caused by specific-named perils, such as a hurricane that hits your destination and forces early departure."

Counting on credit card policies to cover you

According to Hummer, this is a tricky one since many travelers carry credit cards with travel perks, including trip delay insurance, and therefore think they're covered in case of a weather event like a hurricane.

"The problem with credit card coverage is that the coverage is very low, like $5,000 for medical," she says.

That's well below what you might need in a true emergency.

"Remember that your credit card won't cover anything not purchased on that card," Hummer says. "So, if you haven't paid for your whole trip with that card or other people in your group used another payment method, you won't be fully covered."

Not buying a policy with a 24-hour help desk

If there's a policy that costs less but doesn't offer round-the-clock help, skip it.

"Make sure you buy a policy with 24/7 assistance," Hummer says.

She also added that if you're in a situation where a hurricane has closed the airport, "Call your travel insurer first; they can pay for hotels and meals while you're waiting on hold with the airline."

Not getting enough coverage

While you don't have to pay a premium for a travel insurance package during hurricane season, you do need to have enough coverage to get you home and cover any emergencies.

According to Hummer, $50,000 in medical and $100,000 in medical evacuation are the minimums your package should include.

Forgetting that a hurricane can happen at home, too

Travel insurance can still be beneficial, even if you're not going to a tropical area.

"Let's say you live in South Carolina, but you're taking an Alaskan cruise," Godlin says. "As you're getting ready to embark on your dream vacation, a hurricane hits the coast and decimates your home. What can you do? If you purchased travel protection and your home is rendered uninhabitable, that can be a covered reason for trip cancellation."

That's definitely a worst-case scenario, but it's a good reminder that hurricanes can happen at home or while you're away, depending on your origin and destination.

Paying too much for hurricane coverage

"Buy the cheapest policy with the coverage you need," Hummer says.

Use a comparison engine, she suggests, and know that "just because you're paying more doesn't mean you get more coverage."

She explains that different travel insurance agencies have different formulas and take a variety of factors into account, like age and destination — oftentimes, prices vary while coverage doesn't. Instead, make sure you're getting the coverage and assistance outlined above and choose the option that costs the least.

Reports have shown higher numbers of people passing through TSA checkpoints all summer, and that trend isn’t slowing down with cooler temperatures.

Transportation and travel experts say this might be the perfect time to plan your next trip.

Some travelers are already taking advantage of lower airfares. Lucinda Cave is heading to Prague and Budapest for a 10-day trip she describes as the “trip of a lifetime.”

“Yes! Bucket list trip,” Cave said, sharing her excitement.

She’s been planning this trip for three years and has been closely monitoring ticket prices, noting how they have changed over time.

“I think actually since COVID they’ve gone up. And they’ve been high,” Cave said.

But recent reports suggest that now might be a great time to look for lower fares.

“Airfares are looking much better than this time last year,” said Haley Berg, lead economist at Hopper. “Right now, domestic airfare is averaging around $240, down 8% from this time last year.”

The drop in prices can be attributed to several factors. Airlines have added more seats than are needed in the industry, contributing to the decline in fares.

“In addition to that, extreme competition between mainstream carriers and lower-cost carriers is offering lower prices,” said Berg adds.

For some travelers, like Deborah Turner, these price drops mean more opportunities to travel.

“Well, I have Southwest. I have the points. I’ve had the points. They come up with these lower fares. It just works. It cost me $5.60 to go to Baltimore today,” Turner said.

Experts recommend using price monitoring tools like Hopper or Google Flights to track fare changes and find the best deals.

Prices should remain pretty similar throughout the holiday season.

“We expect the averages to peak around $300 for November and December,” Berg says.

Current prices remain high, so it may be best to wait until you buy your holiday tickets. By the end of September, those dates around Christmas and Thanksgiving may drop well below 2019 and 2020 levels.

While airfare is dropping, hotel rates have remained steady following the pandemic. Currently, hotels in the U.S. are averaging around $161 per night, slightly up from last year. For comparison, at the end of summer 2019, before the pandemic, the average was around $131 per night.

If you're flexible, experts suggest waiting until the last minute to book hotel stays.

“If you’re flexible, wait until the very last minute. Prices typically drop about 24 to 48 hours before check-in in those bigger cities where there’s more competition for those last-minute bookings,” Berg explained.

Elections are often hard on many of us. According to a recent survey , over one-third of American adults say the 2024 presidential election is causing them to feel anxious or depressed . I've run into many colleagues who say at the very least they get distracted by election campaigns (or the media coverage of them).

On top of this, a World Economic Forum survey ranked misinformation and disinformation from AI as the top global risk over the next two years, ranking higher than both climate change and war.

With contentious (and sometimes even fake news) stories dominating our feeds and stress levels at a high, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by negative emotions. However, if you take the time to find value in it, entrepreneurs have a lot to learn from this election season.

Look for how people's true opinions change over time

The truth is important in all areas of life, especially in building a successful business. Entrepreneurs should take this election as an opportunity to observe how people's opinions change over time and uncover their underlying motivations.

Instead of getting lost in the turmoil of the election season, use it as a reminder to seek the truth and an opportunity to broaden your understanding of human behavior.

For the majority of this election cycle, Democrats were resigned to the inevitability of having Joe Biden as their party's nominee. While many Democrats were privately stewing over their dissatisfaction with Biden, it wasn't until his poor performance at the presidential debate that some democratic leaders found the courage to speak out about how they really felt .

In this case, it took a critical moment for people to finally express how they were actually feeling. As an entrepreneur, it is important to keep it from getting that far, and to consistently keep a pulse on how your business is performing. An example could be a significant drop in sales or losing a major client before management realizes there are serious issues with product quality or customer service.

The key is often to know what your team, customers and competitors really think, and sometimes it's just as simple as creating an environment where people feel genuinely comfortable voicing their opinions. Asking questions , through one-on-one meetings or employee surveys , keeping an open mind, and showing sincere interest in their responses can go a long way in understanding how people feel and where they are coming from.

Don't take what you read online as a given, go straight to the source

Misleading information and truth-twisting are as old as politics itself. However, with the advent of AI, social media and advanced misinformation and disinformation techniques, finding the truth is more difficult than it has been in the past.

For example, both Democrats and Republicans will say that their parties' policies are better for the middle class. To "prove" this, they will pick and choose statistics that back up their case, or worse, point you to entirely false information .

Instead of relying on the information that's conveniently spoon-fed to you, do your own research to get the bigger picture. In the scenario above, look at the actual numbers on how middle class incomes change under each party. Draw on information from a variety of unbiased sources, and talk to experts with different backgrounds and areas of expertise.

This same logic applies to your business. Everyone has their own interests and may present information in a way that benefits them. Instead of basing your business decisions off of one metric or one opinion, look at the numbers yourself and make sure you understand the full picture.

Ask good questions

Finding good answers starts with good questions . For instance, in my business, I'll ask, "Why did revenue go up 10% this year over last year?" It turns out I made measurable strides in aspects of marketing myself as well as client management, and earned new customers as a result. Continually asking why can lead you to the truth about why things are the way they are.

While it is always a good idea to ask why, sometimes that isn't enough. Ask yourself whether your employees are saying what they mean or telling you what you want to hear. Have opinions shifted since you last checked in? What would it take to get someone to express what they are really thinking?

Equally important as the question is the people you are asking the questions to. While it is important to have trusted sources that you return to over and over again, don't overlook the importance of asking questions to those whose input you don't normally seek.

Look for people's underlying beliefs

Understanding someone's unique perspective and motivations can give you a better understanding of why they feel the way they do and can help you make sense of conflicting ideas.

For example, conservatives as a whole are against universal health care, even though it might personally benefit many Republican voters. Without understanding someone's worldview as a whole, it is impossible to reconcile why someone would be against something that would directly improve their day-to-day life.

It is not until you dig deeper and uncover underlying incentives that you can begin to understand why people behave the way they do. Once you understand that conservatives believe in reigning in government's reach, you can make sense of the Republican voter who is against universal health care even though they are frustrated with rising health care costs. In this case, their perspective on the role of politics in general impacts their opinion on universal health care.

Or, if a rich person is advocating for an anti-tax candidate, you can deduce that their own personal interests may be motivating them to try to convince you what to do. Similarly, if one of your salespersons is saying you don't do enough marketing, don't forget the motives that may be driving them to say this.

As an entrepreneur, politics and deal making are a key part of the job. To reach agreements and make deals, it helps to understand where your counterparts' beliefs stem from. It's not until you understand their core beliefs and motivations that you can begin to move forward.

This election season, remember the importance of understanding people's underlying beliefs, asking questions and doing your own research. The truth is your best preparation for the future and can help you navigate the complexities of running a business. When you are feeling overwhelmed by politics, remember there is a silver lining in the valuable lessons you can learn from it.

It might seem wild to think about, but the holiday season is just around the corner!

Thanksgiving is coming up on November 28th with Christmas and the holidays following shortly after. Now is the time that a lot of people are beginning to make plans for their holiday trips and vacations. If you’re looking at traveling somewhere that requires a flight, you might want to consider some of the best times to book your trip!

While it’s hard to predict flight prices as they change frequently, Google dug into historical data to find when the best time to book flights over the holidays usually occurs. For normal travel, it’s typically cheapest to book domestic flights 21-52 days before the flight and 50 or more days ahead of takeoff for international flights.

If you’re planning on flying over Thanksgiving, you’ll want to to book domestic flights 26-59 days out, with the cheapest time being 45 days before departure, according to Google. That makes the best time to book cheap flights most likely being early October for flights before or after Thanksgiving.

If you’re traveling over Christmas, Google suggests booking flights further in advance such as 36-72 days out for the lowest price range. Historically, 58 days out has had the lowest prices. This makes the second half of October the best time to book those Christmas flights!

With Google Flights you can search a specific destination and dates of travel and it’ll show you the cheapest time to book. This may be a great tool to use if you’re planning on traveling over busy times of the year such as the holiday season.

If you’re traveling to Disney World for the holidays this year, you can book your holiday party tickets now for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Jollywood Nights. It’s never too early to get your park tickets and book those Disney World hotels. Orlando is one of the top two destinations for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, so we suggest being on top of those airline tickets starting in October!
