After all, you never know when you’ll want to go to an elegant restaurant, be invited to a semi-formal event, or need to make a good impression on a stranger. Perfectly smooth clothing does not magically come out of your luggage — you have to work for it, i.e. iron everything before and after packing it. Garment bags allow your ironed clothes to hang rather than being folded, preventing wrinkles. However, because garment bags do fold in half to be more easily transportable, know that there may be a few creases in your clothes once you arrive at your destination. Those few creases are usually very minimal and should be easily remedied by some of the tips listed further below.

The key to picking a good garment bag is to first look at its size. Garment bags can be used as carry-on luggage or personal items as long as they don’t exceed the maximum dimensions required by airlines. Tips on how to have wrinkle-free travel clothes

If you don’t want to spend money on the tried-and-tested gear listed above, there are some tricks that may help you on your crease-free clothing quest. Few work as well as using a travel steamer, a garment bag, or wrinkle-remover spray, but they will help you look less frumpy than if you did not use anything.

How to pack clothes so they don’t wrinkle?

The best thing you can do to have wrinkle-free travel clothes is to iron your stuff before you pack it. It goes without saying that an ironed shirt will come out of your bag significantly smoother than one that was never ironed. So get out your ironing board and iron, and smooth all the items of clothing you’ll need before you even start to think about how to fold and pack them.

Once your clothes are ironed, use a folding board to fold them neatly and slide tissue paper around the different parts of each garments. Once done, wrap your clothing individually in plastic bags (keep all your dry cleaner’s bags for that purpose.) Limiting friction between parts of the items of clothing and between various items in your luggage will prevent wrinkling.

But all this work will go to waste if you don’t organize your luggage properly. Make sure to pack your shoes, toiletry kit, and other heavy items at the bottom of your luggage, and keep the delicate, ironed clothes on top so they don’t get smushed by the rest of your belongings.

Does rolling clothes prevent wrinkles?

Rolling clothes is not the best way to keep them wrinkle free, but it is a good way to save space in your luggage (especially if you use packing cubes.) That said, if you roll up your clothes correctly, they will be better looking than if you just toss them randomly in your luggage, so it’s still worth taking the time to do it, especially if you travel with a backpack or duffle bag instead of a suitcase.

First, if you want wrinkle-free travel clothes, you need to iron said clothes before you roll them up. It’s a time-consuming activity, but it’s a step you can’t avoid if you want smooth garments. Next, fold the items lengthways and roll them tightly. If the items are not rolled tightly enough, they are more likely to wrinkle.

Note that the rolling technique works best for casual clothing, and pieces made of synthetic fabric that don’t wrinkle very much to begin with. Don’t roll up a linen suit, or a thin cotton dress, and hope it’ll come out smooth — it won’t.

What is bundle wrapping?

Bundle wrapping consists in folding all your previously ironed clothing items together around a soft but sturdy core, in one big bundle. First, you create a somewhat square core by tightly wrapping a simple t-shirt around all your socks and underwear (they don’t need to be crease-free). Then you lay out all of your clothes flat on top of each other, starting with the largest items, and you deposit the core in the middle. Your next step consists of folding each item around the core one after the other, very tightly, to prevent wrinkles.

Bundle wrapping isn’t the most practical way to pack, but to keep your clothes wrinkle-free, it’s a little bit more effective than the rolling technique.

How to get wrinkles out of clothes without an iron?

No matter which of the above folding and packing techniques you use, your clothes will never come out of your luggage perfectly smooth. If you don’t have an iron handy, try out the following tips to remove any remaining creases in your garments:

• Hang up your clothes up as soon as you arrive at your destination. Gravity will help a little.
• Hang up your clothes in the bathroom while you have a hot shower. The steam will help remove some of the wrinkles, granted you only have a few. Using a wrinkle-release spray before hanging your garment in the bathroom works best.
• Use a damp towel to humidify the wrinkled clothes and use a hair dryer while tugging at the wrinkles.

Regardless of your reasoning, we're here to help!

Before we start, it’s essential to understand voltage in the context of travel steamers. Some models are dual voltage and can work for different power grids worldwide; you’ll only need an outlet adapter. However, you may be out of luck if your steamer isn't dual-voltage. Some models will work with a power converter and a travel adapter, but others require higher wattage and won’t. How We Tested It

We cleaned out our closets and brought in some wrinkled cotton shirts to see how well each travel steamer performed. If you’re not familiar with how to use a steamer, here’s a quick tutorial:

First, place the garment on a hanger and place it where it can hang freely without touching anything else; the shower rod in the bathroom works well. Steam the item in sections, using one hand to hold the garment flat and the other to sweep the steamer across the taut section until the wrinkles are released. Pull the steamer away and hold the section for 10-15 seconds to allow the fabric to cool. Don't keep the steamer too long in one spot, or the fabric will get wet, but you may need to go over stubborn wrinkles more than once.

Test 1: Obviously, you have to heat up the appliance before you steam. Some of the best travel steamers heat up in 30 seconds or less, while others take up to 2 minutes to come to a boil. We filled up each one and timed how long it took for steam to come out so you'll be prepared if you oversleep the day of the big event.

Test 2: We got to work steaming our wrinkled shirts. We counted how many passes of the steamer were required to get most wrinkles out so you know how quickly each travel steamer will work.

Finding something smaller is typically the goal when looking for a piece of travel gear. The Hilife Steamer combines features you're used to working with at home and a small package conducive to travel purposes. Whether you need the best travel steamer for your brother's wedding or are crossing the country for work, you can count on this model from Hilife.

As you were probably expecting, for something smaller, there's probably a downside. As it is, it took our tester 20 passes to lessen the wrinkles on a cotton shirt, and she finds it rather weak, as it doesn’t put out enough steam or penetrate far enough into those fabrics to get the wrinkles out. However, for most clothing you'd take on a trip, it works great! Just make sure to give yourself enough time to get ready: this one takes over 2 minutes to heat up.

When it comes to your hunt for a travel steamer for clothing, the Hilife Steamer is a great bet.

• Not powerful enough for thick fabrics

Regardless of the cause of the trip, you want your gear to get the job done while you’re traveling. The Bear Travel Steamer is simple enough to work quickly and effectively while you're away from home. It heats up in less than 30 seconds, and it has a unique style that doesn't look cheap while coming in at a budget-friendly price point.

Even though this travel steamer is so tiny, it works fairly well, getting wrinkles out in about a dozen passes. However, it struggles with heavier fabrics, and can take so long that your clothing may end up a little damp.

That said, it comes at a budget price point, so you don't have to worry if it breaks while crossing the globe and you have to replace it when you return. Plus, we've found it rugged enough to handle most adventures, so !

If you're big on saving space in your back, the Nesugar Steamer was designed with you in mind. It has a broad head so you can get a lot of coverage while steaming your clothing once you arrive, but it rotates to run parallel with the handle so that it doesn't take up more room in your pack, as the straight body fits just about anywhere after you rotate it, no matter what travel backpack or daypack you're using.

It heats up in less than 8 seconds, and works for nearly 10 minutes on a single fill-up. Unfortunately, it has a weak steam output and takes at least 20 passes to start removing wrinkles from clothing. You can go with green or red, which aren't the sleekest colorways, but having the option to choose is nice. Even if you hate those colors, saving space might still be worth it!

Sometimes you want to push a button and go—the iSteam Steamer for Clothes works just like that. It features a simple design that's easy to use no matter where you are so that you can stay stress- and wrinkle-free. Plus, there are four colorways to choose from, which we love to see.

It heats up in about 30 seconds, but wait a few more before putting it near your clothing: it spits a bit of water as soon as it reaches a boil, but stops quickly. In our tester’s experience, it only takes about 12-15 passes to be wrinkle-free, and since you can also use it horizontally, it’s easier to get stubborn creases out as you would with an iron.

It comes with a brush accessory, which is meant to help dust off clothing, but we don't find that very useful, so we'd leave it at home. It may come in handy for specific kinds of clothing, though!

If you’ve ever found it unwieldy to steam a sleeve, the MASTEAM is the best travel steamer for you. It includes a press mitt, and if you don’t know what it is, you may have opened the box and been puzzled to find a tiny oven mitt inside. It works similarly to the one you use for baking: you put the mitt on one hand and insert it up the sleeve to the top of the arm, then steam the section of the sleeve covering the mitt. Slowly draw the mitt and the steamer down the sleeve toward the wrist area, then repeat on the back side of the sleeve. It also works well on stubborn wrinkles or other awkward areas, like suit coat collars, giving you more leverage while preventing burns.

The MASTEAM isn't the smallest model on this list; however, it'll fit in a travel backpack or rolling luggage bag. You can use it with a travel converter up to 700W, and it heats up in one minute, 13 seconds.

This steamer has no special features or bells and whistles, but it’s one of the most powerful models we tested, flattening out wrinkles in just seven passes. The simple design gets the job done when it matters, and if you're bringing a steamer on vacation, you'll need it.

The Conair Travel Smart Handheld Steamer was recommended to us by Pack Hacker Pro Members . It's lightweight and takes up less space thanks to a foldable handle, plus it’s fairly durable and won't break the bank. This one checks a lot of boxes.

It’s the best travel steamer for travel to Europe because it includes a dual-voltage switch. It only takes a minute and a quarter to heat up and gets the job done in 8-10 passes, though it can be hard to use for extended periods because of its size, especially if you have large hands. That said, we’d rather have a smaller steamer that doesn't take up as much room in our pack than one that's more comfortable and makes it so we can't bring as many stroopwafels home.

• The handle can feel too small for those with larger hands
• The water tank isn’t detachable

The best travel steamer is a lot like the best travel hair dryer: it needs to be compact and maybe even fold up to be easier to slide into your travel backpack or rolling carry on luggage. The BEAUTURAL Steamer fits the bill with a removable water reservoir and a nozzle that folds down to lay against the handle.

It begins heating up as soon as you plug it in and is ready to use when the indicator light on the top turns red. Unfortunately, that light is very dim, and our tester had to cup her hand and press her eye to the top to see the red light. On the other hand, it was ready in just 30 seconds. To use it, just press the little button on the handle. There are no worries about setting it down on the counter because steam doesn’t come out until you want it to. It works well, too, eliminating wrinkles in just 10 passes.

• BEAUTURAL says you can’t use it on higher voltage outlets, even with an adapter or portable converter, so it’s not good for European vacations

Fans of clean lines and modern design may dig the Nesugar Travel Steamer, which looks like a minimalist’s dream appliance. A clear reservoir unscrews from the bottom so you can fill it up like the squirt gun of your childhood, and the 1-pound steamer heats up in just 15 seconds. We like that you can use it horizontally as well as vertically because it’s sometimes easier to get wrinkles out when you can press the clothing out flat after passing the steam over instead of just holding it taut on the hanger.

We had no issue eliminating wrinkles from a cotton dress shirt in 8-10 passes, depending on the depth of the crease. You’ll get about 8 minutes of steam from the appliance before needing to refill, and the 6-foot cord gives you enough room for maneuverability in most situations.

If you need to steam clothing for your entire travel party, you'll want to check out the steamer from OGHom. It has a large 240 ml reservoir that lasts up to 15 minutes and a handle comfortable enough to use that long. Plus, the cord reaches more than 9 feet, which is handy when the outlet is inconveniently far from where you need to hang your garment.

It’s not the fastest steamer to heat up; it took nearly 2 minutes for the water to boil (1 minute, 47 seconds, to be exact), and it takes about a dozen passes for wrinkles to come out. However, it’s easy to use and pretty small, so you can probably find room for it in your luggage. The cap locks into place, and there’s a power switch, too, so you don’t have to worry about steam emanating when you’re not ready to use it. Plus, the wide base makes it easy to set down as you rearrange what you’re steaming or switch to another item.

Others We Considered

We love the throwback vibes of the Conair Power Steam Travel Garment Steamer , especially in the Mint Green colorway, and were excited to find that it heats up in less than 40 seconds. Unfortunately, it spits out water right away and continues to do so intermittently. Even when it doesn’t, it puts out so much steam that our shirt was visibly damp in spots, though wrinkle-free, so we can’t recommend it for anything that may show water spots or stains. However, it does have a dual-voltage switch on the bottom for European travel, which we were pleased to see since that’s not very common.

While the easing of lockdown is welcome news for some, it may have left you feeling more conscious about COVID-19, especially if you haven’t been vaccinated yet. By now, a mask and hand sanitiser will be permanent features in your bag – but there are other precautions you may wish to take. The World Health Organisation outlines that, right now, we know COVID-19 spreads when droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth. Choose Fabrics That Don’t Wrinkle Easily

Where should you start when determining how to pack clothes without wrinkles? Choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily. You can find a full guide on the best travel fabrics here. Generally speaking, clothes that have a bit of stretch and knits don’t wrinkle as much.

Many of the clothes you already own will probably work well for travel without the need to buy new clothing. Give the fabric a scrunch and do a practice packing run to see how they hold up to wrinkles.

One of the biggest benefits of using travel brands is that they tend to use wrinkle-resistant fabrics. The downside is that many of these fabrics can’t be steamed or ironed should if they do get wrinkled. An 18-inch packing folder can fit 8 to 12 garments, helping you fit many of your items in one organizer. You can use packing cubes for underwear and clothes that don’t wrinkle easily.

The briefcase-like design keeps everything concealed and stored neatly. To make sure your clothes are packed tidily, button up all tops and pants and lay them face down on a flat surface to smooth away wrinkles before packing. Packing folders tend to include a folding board and pictures so you know what you’ve packed.

Similar to packing folders, garment bags allow you to pack all your clothing together and then fold it once. I used to travel with these for business conferences and trade shows. I’d plan my outfits and hang them together in my closet. All I had to do was grab them all together, place them in the garment bag, zip it up, and fold the bag once it was in my suitcase.

Because you only fold once or twice and keep everything in place securely within the garment bag, you avoid creases and wrinkles. As a bonus, it is super easy to unpack! Since most of the clothing is already on a hanger, it was easy to hang up everything in the hotel room. If anything gets wrinkled, it will be easier and less time-consuming to iron or steam.

There are suitcases with built-in removable garment bags (like these ), but they are rare nowadays. However, you can buy them individually. You can also buy self-contained garment bags like these .

The downside of garment bags is that I haven’t been able to find a carryon-sized garment bag. The smallest width seems to be 22 inches, which is a bit too long for a carry-on suitcase. So if you’re wondering how to pack clothes without wrinkles in a carryon, you may want to use packing folders instead of garment bags.

For problematic clothes, consider paying to have your delicate items pressed at the hotel. Paying for one or two pieces saves you time and stress.

Tip: Pack these delicate items last so other items don’t squish them. Also, double-up clothes on hangers to save space and weight.

The bundle wrap method is another popular tip for how to pack clothes without wrinkles. The concept is the same as the packing folder and garment bags but you place the clothes directly inside a suitcase. This method works particularly work for bulkier items that may take up too much space for packing organizers.

The downside is that you have to unpack all your clothes every time so this is not ideal if you’re on a fast paced trip and will only be staying in hotels one or two nights.

The quickest way to instantly freshen your clothes is with a travel-sized handheld steamer . You can also buy a travel iron/steamer duo . They’re a must if you’re traveling for business, as you can use them on suits, blouses, shirts, or delicate dresses.

With steamers, you can use the continuous steam function, which smooths even the toughest of wrinkles in a matter of seconds. Hang up your clothes and steam them without worrying about burning or damaging any of your items. If you’re ever wondering how to avoid wrinkled clothes when traveling, a handheld steamer is a sure bet!

You might also be able to hold the hotel’s iron upright and press the steam button to make it work like a clothing steamer. However, the quality of irons varies in hotel rooms so you may not want to depend on this if you want zero wrinkles.

Alternatively, a reader suggests to buy a pressing cloth, and carry that with you. If you have any stubborn  wrinkles , you can use the pressing cloth between your clothes and the iron to press them out without burning your clothes. A magazine or newspaper rolled into a tube makes a great “sleeve board” if your jacket sleeves wrinkle.

Likewise, if traveling to a tropical, humid destination, hang up your clothes once you arrive and the humidity will help “iron” them and loosen wrinkles.

Similar to using a wrinkle release spray, this DIY method is perfect for when you’re in a pinch. Just use a spray bottle or a damp towel and lay your wrinkled clothes on a flat surface.

Take a warm damp towel and press it on top of your outfit. Spritz water on your clothes and hang it before you head to bed. The wrinkles will be long gone by the time you wake up!

I do a combo of roll and fold. I would love to try the clothes folders for those shirts that wrinkle. I always travel with a small bottle of downey wrinkle release as well.

Do the packing folders work for linen? I wear dresses mostly in the summer and love bringing linen but don’t love tge wrinkles!

I take clips used for the office, clamp style, and use the hangars in the room to line dry light weight materials after rinsing or damp wiping. The clips can also be used to hold together curtains in the room or my electronic gear cords.

Its one thing to pare down the items you are bringing; another thing entirely to pack them! I adore the tissue paper tip and wonder if I can use that with my new compression packing cubes…going to try it for sure. Thanks for the idea!

I found this blog most helpful as I was headed for a cruise and really didn’t want to have to worry about wrinkles in my clothing. I am now a huge fan of packing cubes! not only were my clothes not wrinkled but I could just stick the whole cube in the drawer, how easy is that? and what a space saver.

I find the method of first laying my pants inside the suite case with the pant legs hanging over the edge of the case, then rolling the rest of my clothes inside and then folding up the legs over everything at the end really helps get as much in as I possibly can!

I never used to wear polyester, but I have found that not all polyesters are the same. There are some light weight polyesters that breathe, are light weight, roll into small bundles, and never wrinkle. Great ideas!

I iron everything and fold carefully into packing cubes. At my destination, I take an outfit out the night before and sort of “iron” out wrinkles with a wet washcloth then hang to dry. Nice & smooth the next day!

I have become a firm believer in rolling my clothes. It takes a bit longer but clothes come out with minimal wrinkles. Shoes get packed along the sides with soles facing away from clothing.

Kate–I agree on rolling clothes. I’ve started converting my tops to Merino wool and that has really helped reduce wrinkles. Even if a top has a few packing wrinkles, I hang it over a chair overnight and they are gone.

I have found that rolling my clothes takes up less space and helps prevent wrinkles. I just returned from a 10 day trip to Europe (COO) and used both compression bags and rolled clothes to fit everything. Always bring wrinkle spray just in case.

I’ve never used a packing folder. Thanks for the tip. Being allergic to scents, I just use plain water in a spray bottle for wrinkles and let the garment hang. It works well.

I have found that rolling skirts, dresses and tops help decrease wrinkles. I also use a little wrinkle release in spray bottle, spray my clothes turn on hot water in bathroom and let steam help remove wrinkles.

I’m trying the packing cubes for an Italy trip in a few weeks. I also used various sizes if ziplocs to contain odds and ends. Then I have the ziplocs to use throughout the trip. This will be my first COO!

I have found this group so helpful with all things travel. I really like the cubes for packing. We were just commenting about how you don’t see as many garment bags in use as we did 20 years ago. I find rolling wrinkle-prone clothes works best. I roll them with tissue paper and bubble wrap to avoid creases. Then I reuse the tissue and bubble wrap to secure souvenirs for the trip home–such as a good bottle of wine…or olive oil…or bourbon…etc.

I had never heard of a travel garment folder! Brilliant! I will have to look into this and see if it truly works. The garment bag idea is good too, though not sure how that would work for a carry-on bag? I would think it just wouldn’t fit with just one fold. So maybe that method is better for a checked bag.

I have used compression packing cubes most recently so I am curious if this is a better method (using the folder) to compress and keep together? I normally roll my clothes into the compression cube.

I do use the Downy (or Grove) wrinkle spray, not just for travel but at home when I would rather spray than iron or try to place in dryer to get wrinkles out. The benefit of the spray is it has a nice fragrance so you can freshen up clothing too. I never leave a trip without one!

Our first and only cruise—we took a dress shirt for my husband. I carefully packed, with a plastic cleaner bag, but it still had creases. I took a wet washcloth and moistened the wrinkles. Left it hand while it dried and wrinkles were gone. For everything else, hot shower works.

When I cruise I take several cocktail dresses. I put the dress in a dry cleaning bag and then roll. It works great.

These are all great tips. Hanging garment bags are wonderful. Easy peasy to unpack. Great for cruises.. Packing cubes are great if you have the right clothes for them. But packing folders work better for more wrinkly tops.

Great ideas for preparing for a cruise! We will go on our first one in two weeks and I have hopefully absorbed all these great tips. Obviously when packing for an Alaska cruise there are going to be a few more pieces needed for warmth. If you’re going on a long trip, be it a summer in Europe or a cross-country road trip, it can be tempting to bring your whole wardrobe. But between baggage fees and weight restrictions, that’s not always possible or practical. One way to avoid overpacking is to wash your clothes while you travel. That’s often easier said than done: Laundromats can be hard to track down or inconveniently located, laundry services at hotels and on ships can be prohibitively expensive, and if you’re spending time in the backcountry, neither are an option.

Taking matters into your own hands isn't as much of a chore as you might think, though: There are plenty of tools that make doing laundry while traveling cheap and simple (and we're not just talking about Tide to Go pens ), without adding too much extra bulk to your luggage. Below, six on-the-road laundry hacks.

Scrubba Portable Wash Bag

The Scrubba is basically a dry bag with a ribbed interior that functions like a washboard. You put your clothes, some clean water, and detergent in, and rub the garments against the bumps for a few minutes before rinsing everything out. When browsing options, think about the size and length you need, if you want it to fold up, and what storage features you might use.

To help you find the right one for your needs, we tried 22 garment bags in our testing lab. After packing them up, we evaluated each one for ease of use, capacity, performance, quality, and overall value, and we continued to test them in the real world for another six months to see how the fared during plane rides and road trips.

Monos garment sleeve.

This slim yet spacious sleeve has room for multiple dresses or suits and can be placed in a larger suitcase or carried by hand.

We wish the pocket was longer so it could fit different shoe styles.

The Monos Garment Sleeve also fared well during our tests. Once folded, it's much flatter than most other garment bags, so you can easily fit it into a larger suitcase or tote it around by hand. Despite how slim it is, the inside is very spacious with room for multiple dresses or suits. We were even able to fit a pair of flats in the zippered pocket, though we wish it was slightly longer to accommodate other shoe styles and sizes.

The materials felt durable yet soft, and the zippers appeared sturdy, giving us peace of mind that our garments would be protected en route. All things considered, we think the price is fair and would recommend this garment bag for short getaways, destination weddings, and any other trip that calls for formal attire.

This high-end, smooth-rolling bag fits 15 hung items, plus multiple pairs of shoes and various accessories.

You may want to invest in shoe bags when packing those inside this case as there’s no designated separate section. 

Our favorite carry-on with two wheels is the Travelpro Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag. This carrier effortlessly fit everything on our packing list and then some: two suits, dress pants, a button-down top, two dresses, a belt, a pair of loafers, dress shoes, stilettos, a laptop, a water bottle, and a lunch box. It fit roughly 15 items on the built-in hanger and secured them in place when we zipped everything up. There are also mesh compartments on the corners and various zippered pockets for stashing accessories and other small items, plus a TSA-approved lock if you plan on checking the bag.

The Platinum Elite Rolling Garment Bag was a breeze to roll around on carpet, hard floors, and concrete — and it's not too heavy to lift, even when packed full. Throughout our six-month test, we used this bag a handful of times including on a trip to London and we found that it's even easy to roll alongside larger, checked luggage. It also passed our durability assessments, showing no signs of wear and tear after using it on a trip and dragging a stiletto heel across the exterior. This garment bag is more expensive than most, but the high-quality design, spacious capacity, and organizational features still stand out.

Best Four-wheeled Carry-on

It's on the heavier side for both a carry-on and a garment bag.

You can use this garment bag in place of a traditional carry-on suitcase if you’re flying with dressy clothing. It fits into an overhead bin and has four spinner wheels that live up to their shock-absorbing claims. The wide design sits pretty low to the ground, but the telescoping handle makes it easy to maneuver. And while it's on the heavier side compared to other carry-ons and garment bags we’ve tested, it feels weightless when pushing and pulling it around.

We found the capacity unexpectedly large, with a massive main compartment (for a carry-on, that is), along with corner pouches, zippered pockets, and a designated shoe section. There's even a tech pocket where you can place a power bank for one-the-go charging. We also found this bag exceptionally sturdy — the ballistic nylon exterior resists damage and seems like it'll hold up for many years.

We’ve traveled with this bag on about seven different occasions, including four destination weddings in Austin, Montreal, Mexico City, and Block Island.

Weighing just over two pounds when empty, we found it comfortable to carry over one shoulder with the padded strap or by the grab handles. One thing to note is that the zippers aren't meant to hold a security lock, so keep that in mind if you plan on checking this bag. The sophisticated design flaunts a quilted exterior with leather trim, and it seems durable enough to protect the contents and last many years.

It's not ideal for shoes, and there's no shoulder strap.

This sleek, high-end garment bag gives off major designer vibes. We proudly toted it around while traveling and felt totally sophisticated. Aesthetics aside, it's incredibly functional, too. We were able to fit a full suit, two dress shirts, a belt, and a few ties in the main sections. It would be nice if there was an additional shoe compartment, but the side pocket holds smaller accessories like cufflinks and socks.

We loved the quilted exterior and leather trim. Overall, the design seems like it'll last a long time while protecting the contents. Although there's no shoulder strap, it's easy to carry by the grab handle and lightweight enough that it doesn't cause a strain.

This no-nonsense garment bag fits multiple outfits and folds in half for easy carrying.

The cheap material isn't very durable, and it lacks organizational features.

On a budget? Go with the Misslo Gusseted Garment Bag. The straightforward design is easy to pack up quickly with no frills. We were able to fit two dresses, a shirt, pants, a suit jacket, and a belt, and the transparent window makes it easy to see what's inside. Beyond the main compartment and hanger slot, it doesn't have much in terms of organizational features. More pockets would be useful, but for under $15, we really can't complain.

You can fold it in half to carry it with the attached handles. Though the straps appear pretty sturdy, this bag is made of a non-woven fabric that may not stand the test of time. That said, if you need something for several trips and aren't too worried about durability, you won't be disappointed.

This resilient bag resists tearing and repels water while protecting the clothes inside, and the main compartment is easy to load up with hangers.

There's no designated shoe compartment, but the mesh pocket works for shoes.

Degeler's SkyHanger Garment Bag really stood out in terms of durability. The ripstop nylon exterior is lightweight yet extremely tough; it didn't tear or even scratch when we ran a stiletto heel across the surface. What's more, the water-resistant material didn't feel damp at all when we repeatedly sprayed it with water. This bag could probably get run over by a car without sustaining any damage — and any clothing inside would be protected, too.

We like how the main compartment opens wide, making it easy to load with hangers. It effortlessly fits several items, and the upper button latch prevents the hangers from falling into the bag. While there's no designated shoe compartment, the interior mesh pocket works well for footwear. We also appreciate that this garment bag is compact enough to fit within a larger suitcase, or you can take it on its own as a carry-on or checked bag. Comfy leather handles are the final cherry on top.

This bag is lightweight but doesn't feel cheap at all, and it's comfy to carry, thanks to the padded straps. You can also slide it over your suitcase handle with the trolley strap. The faux leather did sustain a scratch when we dragged a stiletto heel across the surface, though the material didn't rip. Considering the reliable, protective design and organizational features, the price range is more than reasonable, even for occasional use.

Here are some other honorable mentions that we tested. While we didn't love them enough to place them on our main list, they still may work great for some travelers.

Away The Centerfold Garment Sleeve : Available in three sizes, this garment bag is lightweight without sacrificing durability. We wish it had more pockets and organizational features but were all-around impressed with the design.

Travel Select Amsterdam Business Rolling Garment Bag : This rolling garment bag has a huge capacity, with space for several hung items and multiple pairs of shoes. Ultimately, we preferred the wheels options on our main list, though they are pricier, while this one is a more affordable carry-on.

WallyBags Solutions Rolling Garment Bag : We found this bag generally sturdy and of good quality. The grab handles, narrower shape, and telescoping handle make it easy to lift overhead and pull on the in-line wheels. But it can be hard to zip up once packed and folded, and it'll most likely need to be checked if traveling by plane.

Tips for buying garment bags, pay attention to length.

When buying a garment bag, pay attention to the unfolded length. This will tell you what types of items you can hang inside, like suits, dresses, and coats. Some are too short for longer dresses, in which case you can try folding the dress at the waist. Otherwise, have a plan to iron or steam items upon arrival.

Think about foldability

Many garment bags are meant to fold up and be carried around as a duffel or messenger-style bag. Keep this in mind, as folding can crease the items inside. Folding will also double or triple the thickness of the bag, which might make it harder to zip when packed with several articles of clothing.

Consider storage features

In addition to a main compartment with a hook for hangers, garment bags often have other storage features. This might include zippered pockets, a designated shoe compartment, a mesh pouch, a laptop sleeve, or a water bottle holder.
