I loved being in and on the Chobe. The amount of game and birds one gets to see really close up is amazing. I am just a happy snapper who enjoys seeing wildlife but with Guts’ fun instruction in easy to grasp chunks I was surprised how much I learnt and the quality of some of my pics.
This was the most memorable activity of our holiday! What a treat to be able to use such wonderful camera equipment, with tuition and a guide, in such an amazing location.
This was an incredible trip. Pangolin arranged everything and deserves top scores for coordinating the logistics.
Never, and I mean never, was so excellent guided!
These guys know what they are doing! We were with Pangolin for 5 days on a recent two stop photo safari. Pangolin handled the Chobe part of the trip in Kasane and on the Pangolin Voyager houseboat and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.
The photo boats are incredible, well equipped with all the resources you need to create magical wildlife photography. If you come to the Chobe and don’t do a photo tour with Pangolin you’re missing out!
We can’t talk more highly of Pangolin and thank them very warmly for a wonderful holiday.
A wonderful experience, since the photo teachers and guide are very very knowledgable. They bring you in the best position to take your pictures, they know their equipment very well, and by experience, they can almost ‘read’ animal behaviour.
This is truly the way to do a game drive if visiting Chobe National Park. The people of Pangolin are amazing and turned this game drive into one of the most memorable events in my life!

Escape to the Garden Route's Epicentre

George was initially established as a timber hub in the late-eighteenth century – and it’s not hard to see why. Spread across a 10-kilometre plateau at the foot of the verdant Outeniqua Mountains and surrounded by alpine forest and perpetual streams, George is conveniently located halfway between the cities of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth - making it a perfect stopover point when travelling between the two.

George has come a long way from its timber-felling roots. Now a popular tourist destination and golfing mecca, the town boasts world-class golf courses (such as Oubaai, Le Grand George and Fancourt) designed by PGA professionals. Popular annual events include the George Old Car Show, George Cheese Festival, and the George NBM Sevens Premier League.

The town serves as an ideal base from which to explore the nature-lovers paradise of the surrounding Garden Route which is renowned for its lush forests and cliff faces that drop into the sea. The nearby Tsitsikamma National Park is home to the Otter Trail—an intense five-day hike through the Garden Route. Wildlife in the area includes klipspringer, leopard, duiker, and black eagles. Shy elephants are still rumoured to be found in the forests.

George Highlights

  • George is the sixth-oldest town in South Africa and conveniently located halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth
  • In the heart of the Garden Route, framed by the Outeniqua Mountains
  • Nearby attractions include the historic Montagu Pass, the Tsitsikamma National Park, and the Knysna Elephant Park
  • The nearby George Airport services domestic flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban
  • The gateway to the Garden Route, and also an excellent base from which to explore surrounding towns

Best time to go George

Frequently asked questions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting George

As a self-drive destination, there are many routes to choose from, all depending on how much time you have! Our guests often ask us how long the ideal Garden Route trip should be. So, here are our thoughts and suggestions to get the ball rolling!

Two Weeks or More

When guests have as much as two weeks, you have enough time to drive the route in both directions and touch on many of the key towns and attractions. We usually recommend starting in Cape Town, then visiting Robertson or Swellendam, enjoying the Route 62, spending time in Oudtshoorn, and finally joining the Coastal Route at George. From here we recommend a few nights in Plettenberg Bay before visiting a game reserve in the Eastern Cape area. On your return to Cape Town, we’d recommend a stop in the Tsitsikamma, then Knysna or Wilderness and a stay along the Whale Route and then Stellenbosch or Franschhoek before heading back to Cape Town.

One Week or More

If your time is limited to a week, we’d recommend a drive along the Coastal Route, spending time in either Knysna or Plettenberg Bay with a day trip to Oudtshoorn. From here you can venture to Eastern Cape for a safari. We’d recommend leaving the car and flying back to Cape Town or to your next destination from Port Elizabeth to save on time.

Three to Four Nights

If your calendar only allows three to four nights on the Garden Route, then we’d probably recommend a guided tour. Our guided tours take the stress out of driving and enable you to see many things in a short time. (We also like to think that they give you a taster for your next trip!)

Less Than Two Nights

You require at least three or four days to explore the Garden Route. If you’ve only got two nights, our consultants will suggest a two-night stay in Hermanus or perhaps spending some time in the Winelands. The Garden Route needs to be enjoyed at leisure, and the long distances mean that a whistle-stop tour is no fun.

In a destination surrounded by nature reserves, mountains, forests, rivers, lagoons, estuaries and beautiful sandy beaches, most of the action takes place outdoors.

Whale-watching is a popular attraction during mating and calving seasons – July to November – and the cliff walks, and vantage points along the coast are excellent. Dolphin and whale cruises offer some extreme close-ups of these fascinating creatures. Not to mention, that brave guests can partake in Shark Cage diving.

Meerkats, ostriches and crocodiles, and olives, vast caves are championed in the Little Karoo that surrounds Oudtshoorn.

Several nature reserves offer spectacular hikes, mountain bike trails, horse trails and canoeing expeditions. Best of the bunch is the peninsula in Robberg Nature Reserve in Plettenberg Bay for hiking, Harkervile forest for biking, Equitrailing for Horses and more. We are the experts because we have done it all ourselves and speak from first-hand experiences.

For those keen to get the adrenaline pumping, Bloukrans Bungee Jump , at 216m, was at one stage the highest in the world. It presents a unique viewpoint of the spectacular gorge — if you can keep your eyes open, that is! Add to that zip-lining through the Tsitsikamma Forests close to Storms River, also an outing of note and one that raises the heart rate just a tad!

The primates at Monkeyland are a superb example of a successful ecotourism venture and is an experience not to be missed. Many rescued primates species have free reign in 23 hectares of forest, crisscrossed with trails and wobbly footbridges suspended between ancient yellowwoods.

Similarly, its neighbours in the Crags, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, Tenikwa et al. are all fine candidates for a full day of rehabilitated animal adventure.

With such spectacular scenery, conventional sporting activities take on unconventional characteristics. This includes swimming, running, hiking, horse riding, mountain climbing, canoeing, cycling, archery, fishing, diving, surfing... we could go on all day!

In particular, golfers are well catered to as courses are of international calibre, in most cases award-winning and offer spectacular scenery.  These most notably include Fancourt, Pezula, Oubaai, Pinnacle Point, and Simola.

The Whale Route and Overberg region run from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas and inland to Swellendam. Flanked by some of the most spectacular coastlines in Africa, our Whale Route is worth a stop. Each year, between July and November, our shores are chosen by Southern Right and Humpback Whales to calve, and this has afforded Hermanus the title of “best land-based whale watching” in the world. What better way to walk off a big breakfast than by taking a stroll along its gorgeous coastal promenade? Enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and have your camera ready to capture the creatures frolicking nearby in the bay.

The coastline is also famed for being a great white shark country, with the small coastal town of Gansbaai offering world-famous cage diving and boat-based shark viewing.

Inland the area is equally as spectacular and includes pretty villages such as Stanford, Swellendam , and its botanical gardens, Harold Porter, perched beautifully between mountain and sea. If you have time, consider stopping off at the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic oceans converge. Don’t forget that Hermanus has a superb wine route, the Hemel en Aarde valley, home to some award-winning estates.

Route 62 makes for the ideal self-drive destination. Passing through many small rural communities, the Route 62 meanders its way between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn. Winding through impressive mountain passes and many beautifully preserved little ‘dorpies’ (small towns) on its way. Route 62 is the inland alternative to N2 which runs closer to our Southern coastline. The route encompasses dramatic mountains, stunning landscapes, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and fruit orchards as it winds gently through the Breede River Valley and Klein Karoo. Hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and 4x4 trails are found in most of the villages along the way, while others offer fly fishing, canoeing and rock climbing. Then, there are the numerous wine cellars and estates that make Route 62 reputedly the world’s longest wine route.

The perfect base is Oudtshoorn . Celebrating “Afrikaans” culture by offering country and farm-style living, through small and quaint, often quirky properties that allow you the time and vicinity to enjoy the ostriches, crocodiles, caves, meerkats and olives the area is well known for.

Coastal Route, Highlighting Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

Our Garden Route coastal drive portion usually starts in Mossel Bay , with the next stop being George (ever so slightly inland and well-known for its famous Fancourt Golf Course). Wilderness comes next just down the road from George, famed for its wild and impressive stretch of white sandy beach, followed by Sedgefield and then eventually Knysna (pronounced NIZE-na), which nestles on the banks of an estuary, surrounded by forests, lakes and beaches.

A mere 25 minutes ahead, Plettenberg Bay is a seaside destination with spectacular scenery and a bay so beautiful that the Portuguese called it Bahia Formosa, which means “beautiful bay”. Today it’s affectionately known as Plett. Plett offers white beaches and a bay bordered by the protected Robberg peninsula in the south and the Keurbooms estuary in the north, setting the scene for a classic sun-sea-sand holiday destination.

Knysna occupies a narrow shelf between a large lagoon and the sheer Tsitsikamma Mountains. Knysna Lagoon is protected by two large cliffs – called ‘The Heads’ – through which a boat-sized gap leads out into the Indian Ocean. The western arm is a nature reserve accessed by ferry, and the other is home to many of our most recommended boutique properties since their views are breathtaking.

Enjoy a malaria-free safari at the very end of the Garden Route in the Eastern Cape . Port Elizabeth officially marks the end of the Garden Route and is home to an area where early settlers established themselves, thus rapidly affecting wildlife numbers.

However, in 1930, the Addo Elephant Park was established to protect the last remaining animals in the area. Today, it’s a shining beacon to the region and was an instigator of more private farms in the vicinity being slowly purchased and restocked with wildlife over the years. The area is now home to some of South Africa’s most well-known lodges. The lodges are top-rated as they are the closest ‘authentic safari’ experience to Cape Town and is located in a malaria-free area.

Reserves such as Kwandwe, Shamwari, Lalibela, Kariega and Addo Elephant Park, are situated close to Port Elizabeth at the Garden Route’s eastern end. This provides you with a wealth of options that suit all budgets and is a memorable way to end the most wonderful adventure on the Garden Route.

Getting to and around the Garden Route

Most people fly internationally to South Africa into Cape Town Airport or Johannesburg Airport. From here, there are daily flights to and from Port Elizabeth and George (both along the route) if required.

The most exciting and flexible way to appreciate the Garden Route is by hiring a car. This allows you to explore the area at your own pace, as well as the luxury of spontaneity and being able to stop as much or as little as you fancy to get those snaps! It's also the more wallet-friendly means of exploration within our country as you are not paying for a guide, their transport or accommodation. It's also the best destination for those who enjoy self-driving holidays! The roads are extremely well signposted, in excellent condition in accordance with international standards, offering lots of opportunity for gas/petrol stations and loo breaks along the way. Also, of course, our scenery means the journey itself is part of the fun! Some guests choose to drive one direction and fly back the opposite way if time does not allow for exploration with a return trip.

For those who prefer not to drive or have limited time available to them, there is the option to do the area justice with a guided tour. We have some fantastic and uber-experienced guides on-hand.

The most cost-effective tour option is a scheduled shared tour, where you travel with other guests. These include organised inclusions and follows pre-designated stops along the route. If you prefer a private tour, we can tailor it to suit your time, budget and interests. The latter offers more spontaneity because you don't have others to consider. You also have the luxury of choice, which understandably makes it a pricier option.

The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas in South Africa. Most of the rains occur in the winter months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. The Garden Route's temperate weather falls between two climatic regions of summer and winter rainfall, so it rains mostly at night, keeping the area perennially green.

Spring (Sept): You can feel spring in the air by the end of August and into September. October can be quite mixed because, just when you think summer has arrived, another cold front moves in.

Summer (Nov - Mar): The months of November to March are warmer, with December to February seeing midsummer daily temperatures of about 24-30ºC /75.2- 86ºF.

Autumn (May): Temperatures start cooling down from about April, but it can still be very pleasant until June.

Winter (Jun - Aug): The days may be bright and warm, but it gets cold in the evening and can be rainy overnight (8 -17ºC / 46.4-62.6 ºF).

Yes, a resounding YES! Golfers are spoilt for choice along the Cape and Garden Route. Since we have an abundance of space, so many gorgeous landscapes and varied biomes in our little slice of the world, we have lots to "play with" in terms of creating some of the most wonderful championship courses.

Many of these are top resorts and destinations as a whole too, where one can stay in-house and have access to the leading home courses, as well as the opportunity to explore the experiences that are on offer outside the extensive grounds. Top examples of these and firm favourites for discerning golfers are Pearl Valley, Fancourt and Pezula . Between them, we have Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player designed courses and the most southern golf course in Africa as noteworthy highlights. Just a word of warning that you will get distracted by the beauty of the ocean, vineyards and mountains during the game!

The extraordinary Pearl Valley is located just outside of Paarl, so within our Cape Winelands and ideal as a base here to play and stay. If you stay here as part of a Garden Route itinerary, it will generally be towards the start of your trip — and what a great way to kick things off!

Fancourt is located in the heart of George, towards the middle of the Garden Route. It is home to three championship courses, yet its crowning glory is The Links. We recommend staying on-premises at The Manor. If you are an avid golfer, we recommend a minimum of three nights, especially if you wish to play two of the three courses.

At the very least, you should visit Pezula , meaning "high up with the gods". This course is aptly named as it is perched right on the edge of the Indian Ocean, on Knysna's Eastern Head, the peninsula that divides the town's sleepy lagoon from the wildest of oceans.

Other notable courses along the route worthy of attention are Oubaai (stay in George, Mosselbay or Wilderness), Simola (stay in Knysna or Plett), Pinnacle Point (stay in Mosselbay), or Arabella (stay in Hermanus).

George Russell wins Austrian GP in last-minute upset after Max Verstappen, Lando Norris collision

SPIELBERG, AUSTRIA - JUNE 30: George Russell of Great Britain driving the (63) Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team W15 on track during the F1 Grand Prix of Austria at Red Bull Ring on June 30, 2024 in Spielberg, Austria. (Photo by Rudy Carezzevoli/Getty Images)

George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided while battling for the lead.

This marks Mercedes’ first victory since the 2022 season. Norris was forced to retire the car after suffering too much damage, but Verstappen continued, finishing fifth after switching to soft tires. It had been a leisurely drive for the Red Bull driver until what seemed to be the final pit stops with 20 or so laps to go, but a lengthy pit stop (just over six seconds) put the lead in jeopardy.

Norris closed in on Verstappen, and the two kept tangling.

At one point, Norris received a five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits, the final infringement coming when he tried to take the lead but went out off the track. Verstappen got a 10-second penalty for causing a collision.

Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz round out the podium.

“Boomshakalaka! Yabadabadoo,” Russell calls over the radio. “Well done. We had to pick up the pieces, well done.”

An upset win for Mercedes

It has been a long time since the Silver Arrows have won a race, the last being at Brazil in 2022. It’s no secret that Mercedes’ performance hasn’t been as strong when the current regulations took effect, compared to its dominant reign from 2014 to 2021 as the constructors’ champions. But over the last three races, it has taken a step forward, Russell noted.

“I feel that Montreal was probably a victory that we missed out on, and we ended up finishing P3. Today was a deserving P3, and we got the victory,” he said. “So it’s funny how this sport turns around, and just credit to all the team for the hard work they’ve done such huge progress since the start of the year.”

Three laps before the Norris-Verstappen collision happened, Russell’s race engineer told him over the radio that the two were battling hard and, as the Briton recalled, “We can win this.”

“And I said, ‘Look, we need to sort of secure P3 first, let me drive.’ And I knew Oscar was fast behind. And then when I got into the lead, I knew it was going to be a challenging last six laps. My tires were difficult. That VSC helped marginally because my tires were overheating and that just allowed me to cool them down. But it’s a bit of a strange one to win a race like this, for sure. But as I said, it’s racing.

“Sometimes it goes against you.”

'Inevitable': Max Verstappen and Lando Norris’s first true F1 fight ends in tears

The Norris-Verstappen battle

As Sainz said in the cooldown room, “Ah, it was going to happen at some point.”

The incident that changed the race may have occurred on Lap 64, but the battle was brewing long before. Verstappen may have dominated in 2023, but Norris became his closest competitor this season, closing the gap bit by bit in recent races. The McLaren driver won his first F1 race in Miami last month and gave F1 a taste of a fight brewing at Imola (though Verstappen still won despite Norris’ late charge). In Canada and Spain, Verstappen emerged victorious while Norris took P2.

Come Sunday in Austria, they battled for the lead once again. Verstappen and Norris pitted on the same lap, but Red Bull’s stop was roughly four seconds slower than McLaren’s, putting Norris hot on Verstappen’s tail. As the battle wore on, both drivers complained about each other over the radio, like Norris claiming Verstappen made an illegal move under braking with 15 or so laps to go.

F1 Austrian GP takeaways: A familiar Verstappen returns, Haas hits it big

Norris finally passed Verstappen a few laps later but ran off the track. He had already been shown a black-and-white flag for track limit infringements, and this one led to a five-second penalty. But they remained close to each other.

Several laps later, the two cars approached Turn 3, and Norris made a move on the left of Verstappen. The Dutchman moved to the left before turning in, and the two collided, leaving Norris and Verstappen with punctures. The Red Bull’s tire stayed intact, unlike the McLaren’s. Norris had to retire the car, and Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty for the incident, which he said, “I’ll look back at it but 10 seconds seems a bit severe for me. I didn’t feel like it was anything kind of aggressive, going on in that move.”

Norris didn’t mince his words when discussing the fight.

“I expect a tough battle against Max, I know what to expect. I expect aggression and pushing the limits and that kind of thing, but all three times he’s doing stuff that can easily cause an incident, and in the way it’s just a bit reckless, it seemed like a little bit desperate from his side,” Norris said. “Doesn’t need to be. He’s got plenty of wins but a bit desperate to do what he could to not let me past. I know he’s going to be aggressive so I’m in a way not surprise … I just expected a tough, fair, respectful on the edge bit of racing, and I don’t feel like that’s what I got.”

George Patton’s Impact On Modern Tank Warfare Is A Strong Argument For His Status As America’s Top General

Few American generals have attained the legendary status of George Patton. Known as "Old Blood and Guts," he made a significant mark during World War II. As a bold commander who inspired steadfast loyalty, he was the epitome of the principle of leading from the front. His lasting legacy still fascinates countless military history enthusiasts.

What, then, draws Americans to Patton? Let's explore further to uncover the answer to this question.

George Patton never considered a career outside of the US military. (Photo Credit: CORBIS / Getty Images)

George Patton was destined for the military

Before we can go into why George Patton is such a large part of US military legend and folklore, an overview of his service is required. From a young age, he was interested in serving his country, attending both the Virginia Military Institute and the US Military Academy West Point , from which he graduated 46 out of 103 cadets.

His first taste of combat was during the Pancho Villa Expedition - now known as the Mexican Expedition - of 1916, and he later fought for the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I . Not only did he help build the newly-formed US Tank Corps, he commanded troops, most notably during the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive .

When the US entered World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , Patton was given command of the 2nd Armored Division. He was then placed in control of the US Seventh Army in the Mediterranean Theater. He was involved in the invasion of Casablanca during Operation Torch and, later, the invasion of Sicily . It was during these two missions that he established himself as one of the Allied forces' best commanders.

In the lead up to the D-Day landings , Patton was given a key role in Operation Fortitude , the Allied deception plan to mislead the German High Command. He was also given command of the US Third Army, which he led through the Allied invasion of France. During the Battle of the Bulge , his men relieved American troops at Bastogne , and embarked on a charge across the Rhine and into Germany, capturing 10,000 square miles.

Patton passed away on December 21, 1945, after suffering injuries from a car accident while stationed in Germany.

He led by example... From the front!

One of George Patton's primarily philosophies when it came to leadership was to lead by example - and that's exactly what he did while serving in Europe during WWII. He always led his men into battle, exemplifying the values and determination he expected from them.

As author Alan Axelrod once wrote, "[Patton's] message was never we must succeed but always  we will succeed ." This inspired many military officers who came after him and influenced US strategy following his death.

Martin Blumenson, historian and author of Patton: The Man Behind the Legend, 1885-1945 , said it best :

"Patton epitomized the fighting soldier in World War II. He exercised unique leadership by his ability to obtain the utmost - some would say more than the maximum - response from American combat troops. Through his charisma, exemplified by a flamboyant and well-publicized image, he stimulated, better than any other high-ranking U.S. army commander, American troops to an aggressive desire to close with and destroy the enemy.

"He personified the offensive spirit, the ruthless drive, and the will for victory in battle."

George Patton had an incredible ability to inspire his men

General George Patton was a controversial figure, no question about it. His love for bold, hard-hitting speeches fired up his soldiers but left a sour taste in the mouths of some higher-ups in the Allied chain of command. But Patton, the American general, couldn't have cared less. He knew what mattered most: getting his men pumped for battle, and that's where he truly shone.

Patton's troops didn't just dig his loyalty over brains mantra; they lived by his philosophy of battle : "We shall attack and attack until we are exhausted, and then we shall attack again."

Throughout World War II, Patton delivered a string of rousing speeches, the most famous being the one he gave to the Third Army before the D-Day invasion. Deemed by many historians as one of the most potent motivational speeches ever, Patton's words ignited a fire in his men, urging them to face their duty head-on and charge into the face of danger.

George Patton purchased a number of supplies for his men from the Sears Roebuck catalog, as the US military was ill-prepared for the country's entry into World War II. (Photo Credit: Annie Wells / <a>Los Angeles Times</a> / Getty Images)

He personally purchased supplies for his men

George Patton was born into a wealthy family with a distinguished lineage. In addition to an indirect connection to George Washington , his heritage included Welsh aristocrats and links to the British monarchy . This background afforded him considerable financial resources for both leisure and professional pursuits.

After the First World War, Patton advocated for the US military to increase its investment in armored warfare, correctly predicting its future importance in combat. However, his efforts were thwarted by a lack of interest from officials and budget limitations, preventing bigger advancements in equipping the American Armed Forces for this inevitable shift.

When the US entered the Second World War following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the country was underprepared. Assigned to the 2nd Armored Division, Patton took it upon himself to purchase tools, supplies, and other necessities for his troops—from the Sears Roebuck catalog , no less!

George Patton helped develop modern tank warfare

As aforementioned, George Patton played a role in the development of the US Army's Tank Corps during the First World War. He spoke with experts about design, repair and operation, and even observed the British Army's first large-scale use of tanks during the Battle of Cambrai in late 1917.

All this led him to establish the American Expeditionary Forces' Light Tank School in Langres, France. Following this, he led America's first use of tanks in combat at the Battle of Saint-Miheil, which resulted in a victory over the German forces.

Following the war, Patton was given command of a cavalry squadron. During this time, he advocated for the continued switch from horses to tanks, and urged the US Army to adapt cavalry shock tactics. He even went so far as to write his own manual on tank operations, to make the transition process even more smooth.

Throughout WWII, Patton was often found leading his men from a tank, and his involvement in the development of modern tank warfare is arguably his most enduring legacy. In fact, he had such an impact on US military strategy when it came to tanks that a number were named for him following his death.

The first tank to be given the Patton name was the M46, an M26 Pershing equipped with an improved transmission and engine, as well as a new gun. It saw action during the Korean War , where it held its own against the North Korean-manned T-34 . This was followed by the M47, which was essentially an M46 with a new turret. Classified as a main battle tank (MBT), it saw service with the US Army, the US Marine Corps, NATO and SEATO.

The M48 was the first Patton tank to be built from the ground up, improving upon the M47's defense capabilities, fuel efficiency and mobility. It served with the US during the Vietnam War, acting in an infantry support role, before being replaced by the M60. Never officially given the Patton name, the tank featured explosive reactive armor, which helped its success during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Operation Urgent Fury and the Gulf War.

Hurricane Beryl brings 'worst-case scenario' for Caribbean islands: Updates

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Grenada's Carriacou island on Monday, roaring through the Windward Islands hours after strengthening to a fierce Category 4 storm driving devastating sustained winds of 150 mph.

Power was out throughout Grenada and residents were advised to shelter in place as Beryl brought down power lines and tore away roofs. The last major hurricane to reach the country's shores was Ivan, which caused widespread devastation with winds of more than 135 mph in 2004.

“This was essentially a worst-case scenario for the southern Grenadines,'' AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Alex DaSilva said, referring to several islands that are part of Grenada. "The wind field expanded, and wind speeds intensified before Beryl made landfall.”

Nourished by warm waters, Beryl is expected to remain an "extremely dangerous major hurricane" as its core slams through the eastern Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 p.m. ET advisory. The storm's top sustained winds still approached 150 mph, just seven below Category 5 status. Despite some expected variation by midweek, Beryl is predicted to remain a hurricane.

As Beryl continues on a northwestern trajectory, its center is likely to pass close to Jamaica on Wednesday, triggering a hurricane watch in the island.

The storm, centered 60 miles west-northwest of Carriacou Island on Monday afternoon, became the strongest hurricane this early in the season in this area of the Atlantic and may be the strongest ever to cross Grenada, AccuWeather says.

The historic Beryl reached tropical storm status Friday before becoming a major hurricane Sunday as it raced toward the Caribbean with winds of 130 mph − a gain of 95 mph in just 42½ hours. Record-warm ocean temperatures led to rapid intensification, a phenomenon that occurs when a storm strengthens by at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period.

The storm became the earliest Category 4 hurricane on record and the first June major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles. Beryl hit Category 4 status Sunday, but its winds decreased slightly overnight, making it a Category 3 storm Monday. It strengthened again early Monday.

Hurricane Beryl storm tracker: See latest details, projected path of Category 3 storm

Developments:

∎ Storm surge in the Windward Islands could reach 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels and bring "large, destructive waves" to the coast, the National Hurricane Center said .

∎ Rainfall could cause flooding and is expected to dump 3 to 6 inches in Barbados and the Windward Islands. Up to 10 inches are possible in isolated locations, especially in the Grenadines.

∎ After Beryl's center moves across the Windward Islands on Monday, the storm will cross the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday.

How Beryl grew: Hurricane Beryl, super-charged by warm seas, stuns experts

Hurricane Beryl's quick emergence a 'massive warning sign'

An explosive increase in wind speeds. A record for the strongest hurricane this early in the season. Those are ominous signs of what weather experts see as danger ahead in what is expected to be a hyperactive season for major storms.

Hurricane Beryl's stunning transformation from tropical depression to major hurricane in less than 42 hours has meteorologists reaching out for superlatives and issuing warnings. This is only the seventh time such a quick rise in category has occurred with an Atlantic storm, and never before had it happened before Sept. 1, the heart of the hurricane season.

"Buckle up. It could be a challenging few months ahead," said chief science officer Steve Bowen of Gallagher Re, a reinsurance firm. "This is a massive warning sign for the rest of the season."

Will Hurricane Beryl hit Florida, US?

The hurricane center expects Beryl to remain a hurricane as it reaches Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Friday.  AccuWeather hurricane experts expect the U.S. to avoid any major impact from the storm. Still, residents should not let their guard down.

"The most likely scenario is for the storm to move westward into Mexico," AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Alex DaSilva said. "However, it is very important to note that if the high pressure across the Southeast weakens, that can allow the storm to move farther north and potentially directly impact the Gulf Coast."

The storm is likely to have some impact on Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory that is home to more than 3 million American citizens. The hurricane center said the island can expect large swells that cause "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions'' in the next day.

'Full panic mode' in Barbados

Abe and Kristin Homan woke up Monday to the crash of waves on barrier islands just a short walk from their hotel on the southwestern coast of Barbados. From their window, they watched as fierce winds uprooted trees and sent debris flying.

“It’s pretty intense,” Abe Homan, 46, told USA TODAY.

The Homans arrived on the island Tuesday. What started “as a beautiful vacation,” made a dramatic turn over the weekend when the couple realized the severity of the storm, and people “went into full panic mode,” Homan said. They searched for a way back to South Carolina on Sunday, but it was too late. The planes were fully booked and the airport was soon shut down. Back at the Sandals resort, stranded vacationers and some of the staff were distraught.

“They were just so confused, and almost crying,” said Abe Homan, who runs a technology company based in his home state.

Later Monday, the Barbados government discontinued the hurricane warning. Now, the Homans are hoping to return to their four children in South Carolina by the Fourth of July.

Grenada authorities warn residents to stay indoors

Dr. Terence Walters, the national disaster coordinator for Grenada, urged residents to gather documents and put them and other necessities in plastic bags. Walters, speaking at a briefing early Monday, warned residents not to go outside but said Beryl could damage or destroy some homes. Even if a house suffers damage, residents might be safer hiding in a bathroom rather than making a run for a government shelter, Walters said. About 3,000 people were in shelters awaiting the storm, he said.

"If your house is damaged or destroyed, you have to use good judgment before you make a decision to get to safety," he said.

Barbados weather worsens: 'Do not go anywhere'

In Barbados, about 160 miles northeast of Carriacou, Home Affairs and Information Minister Wilfred Abrahams told residents “do not go anywhere until the all clear is given." Abrahams said some power lines were down and some of the island's 280,000 people were in the dark. More than 35,000 homes and businesses − about a quarter of Barbados Light & Power customers − were without power, the company said.

The worst of the storm has passed, but more damage was expected, Abrahams said. A "drone team" was ready to survey the island and help determine where work crews will be sent, he said.

Abrahams said the sun was coming out and he could see from comments on social media that many people were anxious about what has happened.

“I know in the day of social media, everybody wants to be first to get something out," he told Barbados Today . "You want to be the first to have a video. You want to be the first to show something, you want to be first to show house damage. Don’t do that in a way that might cost you your life."

Riding out Hurricane Beryl in St. Lucia: 'We'll just kind of wing it'

Among those hunkering down for the storm was Linda Dancer, a travel agent from Charlotte, North Carolina, who arrived in St. Lucia on Saturday for an award ceremony. Over the last two days, she's watched as staff at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian resort installed plywood over windows, laid out sandbags and removed chandeliers. Dancer, 63, planned on staying in her room as the hurricane lashed the island.

“It was really sunny this morning, but we have outer bands coming in so it’s getting gray and darker out now,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m not taking my eyes off the weather app.”

While stocking her fridge at a Sandals resort on the west side of the island, Dancer has also been coordinating with clients whose vacations and honeymoons have been interrupted by the hurricane.

“Some of them … they're scared but you can’t leave at this point,” she said. “Some are like, ‘It's not that big a deal, we'll just kind of wing it.’”

What is rapid intensification?

Rapid intensification is a process in which a storm undergoes accelerated growth. The phenomenon is typically defined to be a tropical cyclone (whether a tropical storm or hurricane) intensifying by at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period.

"Rapid intensification occurs when a tropical storm or hurricane encounters an extremely conducive environment," Colorado State University hurricane researcher  Phil Klotzbach said . "Typically, this environment consists of very warm water, low vertical wind shear and high levels of midlevel moisture."

What are the Windward Islands?

The Windward Islands are the group of Caribbean islands in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. They include Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are sometimes included in the group.

They are called "windward"  − which means upward from a given point − because they are more windward to arriving ships than the Leeward Islands.

Downgraded Tropical Storm Chris still a threat in Mexico

Tropical Storm Chris, the third named storm of the season, eased to tropical depression status after crashing across the Mexican coastline near Veracruz overnight. The storm was forecast to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches across parts of eastern Mexico earlier Monday, with maximum rainfall totals around 12 inches in higher terrain of the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi.

"This rainfall will result in areas of flooding, with mudslides possible in areas of higher terrain," the National Weather Service said.

What is the 2024 hurricane season forecast?

Federal forecasters have predicted a hurricane season unlike any other , with as many as 25 named storms possible.

It is the most storms the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has ever predicted in a preseason outlook. "All the ingredients are in place for an active season," National Weather Service director Ken Graham said in May.

NOAA director Rick Spinrad said the Atlantic hurricane season is shaping up to be "extraordinary" − an 85% chance for an above-average year. "The forecast … is the highest NOAA has ever issued for the May outlook," he said.

Here is what your session includes:

Your family can be big or small.  We have no limits to the number in the group.  We also work quickly so you and (most importantly) your kids stay in a good mood.

We regularly do either the kids individually or break the larger family into smaller families.  The best part...it still only takes an hour.

Most people have a hard time choosing what to do.  We have you work with an expert to help make the experience easy.

Do you have family out-of-town or want to share the images online?  You get a online gallery where you can view all your images and share them with those you care about.

OUR MOST LOVED FEATURE!  You do not have to guess if your displays will look good.  Our display professional will help you design why, where and how to display your images.

You can now afford large prints.  Our in-house printing will last over 120 years and our large prints are up to 75% less than our competition.  We also have options where you can get the digital files for free.

We want you to be able to spend your money on the prints and not the frames.  We offer our custom framing at our cost.

One more thing to make it easy.  After everything is done, we will install your display at no charge.

Pricing and Available Options

Our regular session fee is $100 for a family portrait session.  However, since we will be in one location all day, we can be more efficient with our time. We pass on that efficiency to you by waiving the session fee.

a $20 deposit is collected at the time of booking to hold your time, that money is put towards your order after the session.

Your print displays will be the most important part of your family portrait. We strongly suggest that families consider what they want to display in their home first.  Then worry about the digital files. We enjoy large prints and we have tried to keep the price of our large prints as low as possible (i.e. our 24x36 is only $225, compare that to other professional photographers and see it is nearly half of many other photographers) . We typically find most families will spend between $75 and $600 for their print order.

Depending on sizes and quantity

The US Library of Congress has said that the average life of a digital file is only 5 to 10 years.  The best advice for digital files is: "Digital to share - Print to Preserve" With our portraits, once the family has decided what they want for their displays, they almost always have earned a free version of the digital files.

3 Essential Parts Of a Family Portrait

The #1 thing that endears someone to a portrait is the ability to see faces.  We have photographed thousands of families since 1998. We want the portrait to do more than be a cute idea or just a beautiful picture.  We also want those who see the picture to be able to relate to your family and see the personality of your family.

No matter how good your portrait is, if it is not displayed well, it will rarely get looked at.  It depends on where the image is displayed and what size it is.  We work closely with our clients to help make sure they will not only like their portraits but also that they will be able to enjoy them every day.

Your portrait is not only to be enjoyed today but also for future generations.  It used to be that all photography was archival.  But, since digital, the expected life of photographic images has diminished.  Right now the average life of a printed photograph is only 8 to 12 years.  We have a special archival process that is expected to last 120 years.
