7 Hidden iOS 18 Changes Apple Barely Talked About at WWDC 2024

Don't waste your money on the magic keyboard for ipad when cheaper alternatives exist, how to spot fake chatgpt apps on the apple app store.

Our Apple devices are a pot of gold when it comes to convenient features we may be unaware of. One cool feature on Safari that you may have skipped over is Reader Mode.

Reader View, often referred to as Reading Mode, appears as an icon in the top-left corner of your Safari search bar, and it reworks your webpage into a perfectly organized, ad-free layout to help you focus better on reading the content. You can even make some quick edits to a webpage through this feature.

Want to read a novel or an article without interruption? Reader View is for you. Let's take a look at what it can do and how you can enable it on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

How to Turn on Reader View

Turning on Reader View is extremely easy and only takes a couple of taps. Before you begin, make sure Safari is updated on your device.

Read More: How to Update Safari on a Mac

Then follow these steps to enable the Reader View on an iPhone or iPad:

  • After you open the webpage you'd like to read on Safari, tap on the Reader View icon in the top-left corner of the Search Bar.
  • From the dropdown menu, select Show Reader View . Your webpage will appear ad-free and organized automatically.

If you want to enable Reader View on a Mac, here's how you do it:

  • Load a website in the Safari.
  • Use Command+Shift+R to turn on Reader Mode.
  • Another option would be to click the same icon at the left end of the Smart Search field.

If you don't see the button, it means that webpage doesn't have any articles that can be viewed in Reader View. To stop using Reader View across all devices, just hit the button again. You can also use the Esc key on your Mac to disable Reader View.

How to Make Edits in Reader View

You can also customize a page to your liking. Reader View allows you to choose from nine font styles, four background colors, and various font sizes. Here's how you can make these edits on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac:

  • Tap the Reader View icon again.
  • You should see options for font style in the dropdown menu with the font sizes above it and the background colors below it. Choose whatever you like.

The options to edit a webpage are pretty minimal, but Apple will hopefully expand to a broader range in the future.

A distinct advantage of Reader View is the fact that you can save your webpages as PDFs on iPhone and iPad straight into your Books app using this feature.

How to Make Reader View the Default

Happen to love Reader Mode? There's an option that automatically switches a URL to Reader View every time you open it. It saves up a lot of time and is efficient. Follow these steps to enable this feature on an iPhone or iPad:

  • Tap the Reader View icon in the top left of Safari.
  • Select Website Settings from the dropdown menu.
  • Turn on the toggle for Use Reader Automatically and press Done . The webpage will now automatically switch to Reader View every time you open it.

To do this on a Mac, all you have to do is Control-click on the Reader View icon and select Use Reader View Automatically on [Site Name] .

You can even enable this feature for all websites that you open in Safari. Here are the steps to do so on an iPhone or iPad:

  • Go to Settings and open Safari .
  • Scroll down and select Reader under Settings for Websites .
  • Turn on the toggle for Other Websites .

Follow these steps to allow all websites to open with Reader View on your Mac:

  • Control-click the Reader View button and select Reader Website Preferences from the popup.
  • At the bottom of the popup panel, click the dropdown box for When visiting other websites and choose On.

Enjoy Clutter-Free Reading in Safari

Reader View in Safari is the perfect way to do some reading without any distractions. Only relevant text and images will remain on your screen, and all other ads will be removed.

You can adjust the font size, style, and background color with this feature, too. Even better, you can automatically open specific websites, or all of them, in Reader View when you want to.

How to Turn on Reader Mode on Your Browser and Read without Distraction

Tracey Rosenberger

The Internet is a treasure trove of information and entertainment, but the amount of extra graphics and advertisements on some of the pages can get overwhelming. To reduce the clutter on the pages that distracts from what we want to read, most browsers have an option called “Reader Mode” or “Reader View.” When enabled, this view takes away all of the excess information and shows you only the article and its images.

Here’s how to access Reader Mode in some of the world’s most popular desktop browsers. The directions in this article refer to desktop versions of these browsers. However, many of them do have a reader mode in their mobile version as well.

Google Chrome

Although Chrome has been experimenting with its Reader Mode for several years, it is still not publicly available on the browser. Instead, it is in the flags, where you can find and utilize settings and extensions not released with the browser.

To use this flag, you must have version 75 of Chrome. Make sure you have this version by clicking on the three dots in the top-right corner. Hover over “Help,” and select “About Chrome.” Chrome will display the current version and automatically install any updates. Click Relaunch to finish the updates.

To get the Reader Mode on Chrome:

1. Type this into the browser: chrome://flags/#enable-reader-mode.

2. Click on the dropdown box and click on Enable.

Browser Reader Mode Chrome

3. When you relaunch your browser, Reader Mode will be available.

When you are on a webpage that you would like to see in Reader Mode, click on the three dots in the top-right corner of the browser, and select “Distill page.”

Browser Reader Mode Chrome Example

If you want to return to the regular page, all you need to do is press the Back button.

Reader view is built into the Firefox browser. If the page has a Reader View, you will see an icon that looks like a piece of paper at the end of the address bar in the browser.

Browser Reader Mode Firefox

Click on the icon, and the browser will reload the page in Reader View.

Browser Reader Mode Firefox Example

Firefox offers some options for its reader mode that allow you to change font, size, and background color. It also has features that read the text to you and let you save it to Pocket to read later.

Opera does not have a reader view by default, but you can install an extension to give it the option. Install the Reader View extension .

Browser Reader Mode Opera Add Extension

Click on the icon to activate Reader View.

Browser Reader Mode Opera Example

The first time you turn on Reader View, you will see a message that tells you that you can select the content you want to view before you click the icon. Selecting the text ahead of time reduces the chance of the extension displaying the incorrect content from the page.

Microsoft Edge

The Reader View on Edge comes standard on the versions of the browser from Canary forward.

Click on the greyed-out book next to the favorites star.

Browser Reader Mode Edge

When you click it, it will turn blue, and the Reader View of the page will load.

Browser Reader Mode Edge Example

Edge has a unique look for its Reader View. Instead of scrolling down to read as you would with the reader views in other browsers, you scroll sideways using the arrows on the edge of the window.

The Reader mode button is standard in the current version of Safari. Look in the address bar for the word “Reader” in a grey box.

Browser Reader Mode Safari

When you click the button, you will enter Reader Mode, and the button will turn purple.

Browser Reader Mode Safari Example

Beginning with Safari 11 in macOS High Sierra and Sierra, you can set the browser to open most pages with Reader Mode. To do this:

1. Access a webpage with Reader Mode available.

2. Right-click the URL box.

3. Select settings for the website.

In the pop-up box that appears, look for where it says, “When visiting this website.” If you want all websites to load in Reader Mode, check the box that says “Use Reader when available.”

There are more settings for Reader on Safari found under Safari > Preferences. Here you can set Safari to open any website in Reader Mode by default.

No matter which of these browsers you use, you will find it much easier to read and retain information from websites that are not packed with so much extra material.

macOS High Sierra: How to use Reader mode in Safari 11

Roman Loyola

Safari’s Reader mode is a way for users to peruse a webpage without distractions from ads, videos, sponsored content links, and other web elements you may not consider essential to the article you are reading.

In Safari 10 (the version that comes with macOS Sierra), Reader mode has to be enabled manually (View > Show Reader or press Shift-Command-R). With Safari 11 in macOS High Sierra and Sierra, you can set the browser to open most pages in Reader mode. (Some pages, like the homepage of news sites, can’t be opened in Reader mode. But the individual articles can.)

Here’s how to set Reader mode in Safari 11. What this will do is open any pages that are Reader compatible in Reader mode when you visit a particular website.

Editor’s note: This how-to originallly posted using the High Sierra public beta. It was updated using the final released version of Safari 11.

Set Reader mode for a website

1. Go to a website you want to configure for Reader mode. We’ll use macworld.com in this example. Right-click the URL box and select Settings for This Website, or go to Safari > Settings for This Website.

safari 11 reader mode right click url box

2. A large pop-up will appear underneath the URL box. Look for the header that reads, “When visiting this website.” If you want Reader mode to always work on this site, check the box for “Use Reader when available.”

safari 11 reader mode settings

As I mentioned before, some pages, like top homepages, won’t open in Reader. It usually works with article pages.

3. Click anywhere else on screen to exit the pop-up. You’re done.

Manage your Reader websites

If you want to see what websites you’ve set for Reader, or you want to adjust your settings, here’s how.

1. Go to Safari > Preferences.

2. In the Preferences window, click on the Websites   icon at the top.

3. Click on Reader in the left column.

4. In the box to the right, you will see a list of websites for which Reader has been set. To turn on/off Reader, click the pop-up menu to the right of each website and select either On or Off.

5. At the bottom of the preference window is an important setting. “When visiting other websites” basically allows you to determine if any website you visit opens in Reader mode. Select On or Off.

6. Close the window when you’re all set.

Reader View Not Working on Safari? 8 Ways To Fix It

Darryl Dsouza

Reader View is a Safari feature that hides ads, navigation menus, and other distracting elements on a website. After you switch to Reader View, the website will only display necessary information (text and images) which enhances the interface and makes text easily readable. Unfortunately, several people are encountering issues with Reader View/Mode not working on their iPhones, iPads, or Macs. If you’re facing similar issues, here’s how to fix Reader View not working in Safari.

How To Fix Reader View Not Working in Safari

1. restart iphone or mac to fix reader view not working in safari.

A temporary bug or glitch might be responsible for Reader View not working in Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. The quickest way to get rid of the temporary bug is to restart the device.

Time needed:  2 minutes

Steps to restart iPhone 8 and above

Restart iPhone

Restart iPhone 7, SE (3rd Gen) and below

  • Press and hold the Side button until the power-off slider appears.
  • Drag the power-off slider to turn off your iPhone.
  • After waiting a few minutes, press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on your screen.

Steps to Restart a Mac.

  • Click the Apple logo at the top right corner of the menu bar.

Restart your Mac

  • Unselect the checkbox to the left of the “Reopen windows when logging back in” option.

Click the Restart button

2. Force Quit and Relaunch Safari To Fix Reader View Not Working

Force Quitting any application stops all its activities right away. Relaunching the application will freshly start all the services from the ground up. Again, this process helps eliminate glitches, and force quitting Safari can help fix Reader View not working.

On iPhone and iPad

  • Open the Safari Browser and swipe up from the bottom or press the Home button .
  • Once on the Home Screen, swipe up and hold from the bottom or double-click the Home button until you see the recently used apps.
  • Swipe up on the Safari Browser to remove it from the recent list and force quit.
  • Restart your iPhone or iPad or ask Siri to restart your iPhone/iPad .
  • After your iPhone restarts, open the Safari Browser and check if the Reader View is working.

Force Quit Safari Browser on iPhone

On Mac

  • Click on the Apple Logo in the Menu Bar at the top left corner.
  • Select the Force Quit option.
  • Select the Safari Browser from the list and click the Force Quit button at the bottom right.
  • Click Force Quit again in the popup window to confirm your selection.
  • Relaunch the Safari Browser and check if the Reader View is working properly.

3. Ensure the Website Supports Reader View

If you aren’t already aware, Reader View is not available on every website you visit. A website needs to have a certain amount of text to qualify for the Reader View option. Safari automatically detects this text and then displays the “Reader Available” message in the address bar.

Just glance through the website, and check if there’s enough text on it for it to qualify for the Reader View. We do not have any information about the minimum requirements for Reader View. However, Safari offers Reader View for most news websites, blogs, etc., and if the website has more text compared to images, tables, or any other elements, it should support Reader View.

4. Request Desktop Website on iPhone or iPad

If the Show Reader/Reader View option is grayed out in Safari, you can try switching to the Desktop website on your iPhone or iPad. It might be able to help resolve the Reader View not working issue on your iPhone or iPad.

  • Open Safari Browser on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the AA icon at the bottom right corner of the Address Bar.
  • Select the Request Desktop Website option from the list.

Request Desktop Website in Safari and then Enable Reader View

After the page reloads and switches to the Desktop Site, you can tap on the AA icon and select the Show Reader option to switch to Reader View. Again, the Show Reader feature will only work if the issue is resolved.

5. Disable Low Power Mode To Fix Reader View Not Working in Safari

Low Power Mode reduces background activity. While the Reader View feature is not a background activity, Safari might not get access to much needed resources to process the website and offer the Reader View in Low Power Mode. We suggest disabling Low Power Mode to fix the Reader View not working on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Head to the Battery option.
  • Disable the Low Power Mode toggle.

Disable Low Power Mode on iPhone

  • Select the System Settings… option.
  • Click the Battery option in the sidebar.
  • Now, click the drop-down list beside the Low Power Mode.
  • Select the Never option.

6. Update Software To Fix Reader View Not Working in Safari

Another reason for Reader View not working can be a software bug within the Safari browser or the operating system. Moreover, there’s no way to individually update Safari as the browser is a part of the operating system. Therefore, you must update the system software which in turn will update Safari and might help resolve the Reader View not working issue on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Update iOS or iPadOS on iPhone or iPad

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone/iPad and head to the General option.
  • Select the Software Update option.
  • Now, tap the Update Now or Install Now button. Please note that either of these options will only be available when a new version of iOS/iPadOS is available.
  • Enter your device’s passcode to continue.

Update iOS to the latest version To Fix Reader View Not Working in Safari

Update macOS on any Mac

  • Click the General option in the sidebar and then select the Software Update option located on the right side. Alternatively, if an update is available, you’ll see a Software Update Available notification under your Name/Apple ID at the top of the right sidebar.

Click the Update Now button to update macOS to the latest version

  • Then click the Agree button after you’ve read the terms to update macOS to the latest version.
  • Enter your Mac’s password and then click the OK button.

7. Reset All Settings on iPhone or iPad

Sometimes, we misconfigure settings by mistake. We aren’t aware of what we’ve changed, and it might be the reason Reader View isn’t working in the Safari browser. Luckily, you can Reset All Settings to their default configurations and this might help fix Reader View not working in Safari on iPhone or iPad.

  • Here, scroll down and select the Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad option.
  • On the next page, tap the Reset option.
  • Then select the Reset All Settings option.
  • Enter the device passcode to confirm your selection.
  • Tap the Reset All Settings option in the pop-up to confirm your selection.

Reset All Settings on iPhone To Fix Reader View Not Working in Safari

8. Contact Apple Support

One or the other step mentioned in this guide should be able to help fix Reader View/Mode not working on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. However, if the issue hasn’t been resolved yet, you should consider contacting Apple Support . They might know more about the issue and might be able to help fix Reader View not working.

In case you’re aware of any other effective methods to fix Reader View not working in Safari, please let us know in the comments below. It will help others who are facing a similar problem. Lastly, if you have any doubts, leave a comment below, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Not all web pages are created equal. Some web articles contain unnecessary formatting and media. Safari's Reader Mode on iPhone, iPad, and Mac cleans up the article text. You can even set the feature up to automatically open all articles directly in the Reader View.

If you're new to  Reader Mode , here's the rundown. When you open a supported page (most articles on the web are supported) on Safari for iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you will see an "aA" button in the URL bar.

Related: How to Use and Tweak Reader Mode in Safari

On your iPhone or iPad, simply tap and hold this button to enter Reader View. You can also tap on the "aA" button and choose the "Show Reader View" option.

On your Mac, the Reader View icon looks like a web page. You'll find it on the left edge of the URL bar.

Once you enter Reader View, you will only see the article text and images---and nothing else. Mac, Chrome , and Firefox have their own reader modes.

You can improve your reading experience by increasing the font size or changing the font or theme.

Once you start using the Reader View feature, you are bound to wonder, "Why can't all articles look like this?" While you can't change how websites are designed, you can have Safari load up every article automatically in Reader View.

What's cool is that this even works in an app that uses Safari's built-in browser. So, for instance, if you tap a link in the Twitter app , it will open directly in Safari's Reader View.

You can enable this feature from Settings. On your iPhone or iPad, open the "Settings" app to get started.

Choose the "Safari" app.

Now, go to the "Reader" section.

Toggle on the "All Websites" option.

Now, when you open any web article in Safari, it will open directly in Reader View.

Safari also lets you exclude particular websites from the automatic Reader View feature. To do this, open the website that you want to exclude, and then tap the "aA" button. Here, choose the "Website Settings" option.

Now, tap the toggle next to the "Use Reader Automatically" option to disable the feature for the website.

You can view a list of all the websites that are excluded from Reader View by going to Settings > Safari > Reader. Here, you can reenable websites if you want.

The process for enabling Reader View for all articles is different on Mac. On your Mac, open the Safari app. Then, click the "Safari" button from the top menu bar and choose the "Preferences" option.

Go to the "Websites" tab and select the "Reader" option from the sidebar.

From the bottom of the window, click the dropdown next to the "When Visiting Other Websites" button and choose the "On" option.

Now, all supported articles will automatically open in Reader View.

If you want to disable this feature for a particular website, open the website in Safari, right-click the Reader View button from the URL bar, and then uncheck the "Use Reader View Automatically on (Website Name)" option.

If you want to see a list of all websites where you have disabled this feature, you can go to Safari Preferences > Websites > Reader. From here, you can reenable the feature for particular websites.

How does Safari's Reader work and when does it show up?

Safari's Reader feature is a cool little app that displays a web page as a newspaper article --- without all the distracting sidebars, comments, and ads. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and I'm wondering how "it knows when to show up." On my personal website, one of the pages has this option. You can click the Reader button in the URL bar and it is displayed beautifully like a page in an iBook. However, none of my other web pages (on the same site) do this. I thought it had something to do with the <article> tag, but I removed that and it still works. Anyone know how this app works?

Also, does anyone know of any Chrome extensions that are just like this? Google Reader is not the same thing.

PS: From the cited Apple website:

Safari Reader As you browse the web, Safari detects if you are on a web page with an article. Click the Reader button that appears in the Smart Address Field and an elegant view of the article appears — without any distracting content.

Not much help, is it?

Safari's Reader makes use of Readability .

Readability turns any web page into a clean view for reading now or later on your computer, smartphone, or tablet.

There's this nice article about how Safari's Reader detects the text, you should consider reading.

It looks like that Safari Reader will detect a <div> or block level element that contains a header element ( <h1> to <h6> ), followed by a certain amount of text. The reader badge will appear when the content text (not including the header) is more than 2,000 characters.

There's a Readability extension for Chrome which you can get from here .

  • 1 Safari uses Readability? I think it uses its own implementation. –  Fish Monitor Commented Dec 22, 2015 at 10:37
  • 1 I don't think safari uses this exactly, as I have used reader on articles that were definitely less than 2000 words –  Sdarb Commented Apr 26, 2018 at 18:03
  • 1 This answer was from 6 years ago and as far as I can tell from current usage Safari definitely has its own implementations and it's not restricted to <div>, <h1>, etc or the the 2000 character minimum size. –  CodeBrew Commented May 20, 2018 at 16:39

Evernote offers a similar plugin for Chrome called Clearly that also integrates with an Evernote Notebook if you use that system.

https://evernote.com/clearly/

There is also a Clearly plugin for Firefox .

Installing the plugin gives you a toolbar button next to the address bar that you click to view a "clean" version of the page and which includes a few GUI tweaks for low light or background color change if beige offends your sensibilities, as well as a button to copy the cleared page to an Evernote Notebook.

Privacy is built in.

Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect. That’s why Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. Upgrading to iCloud+ gives you even more privacy protections, including the ability to sign up for websites and services without having to share your personal email address.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

safari browser reader

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Customization

Putting the you in url..

Safari is more customizable than ever. Organize your tabs into Tab Groups so it’s easy to go from one interest to the next. Set a custom background image and fine-tune your browser window with your favorite features — like Reading List, Favorites, iCloud Tabs, and Siri Suggestions. And third-party extensions for iPhone, iPad, and Mac let you do even more with Safari, so you can browse the way you want across all your devices.

Safari Profiles allow you to separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, favorites, cookies, and more. Quickly switch between profiles for topics you create, like Personal and Work.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

safari browser reader

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

safari browser reader

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

safari browser reader

Designed for developers.

Deep WebKit integration between Mac hardware and macOS allows Safari to deliver the fastest performance and the longest battery life of any browser on the platform, while supporting modern web standards for rich experiences in the browser. WebKit in macOS Sonoma includes optimizations that enable even richer browsing experiences, and give developers more control over styling and layout — allowing for more engaging content.

iOS 18 Safari — biggest new features for your iPhone

Highlights and a redesigned Reader add some smarts to Safari on your iPhone

iOS 18 logo on an iPhone 15 Pro

Safari, Apple's built-in web browser across its different devices, won't get a radical overhaul as part of iOS 18 . But even just two big changes to the iPhone's default browser hint at Apple's larger strategy of leaning into machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Both major additions to Safari in iOS 18 promise to skim web pages and pull out the details you need. The idea, explains Beth Dakin, Apple's senior manager of Safari software engineering, in Apple's WWDC 2024 video is to offer "easier ways to discover content and streamline your browsing."

Even better, while the new Safari features do turn to machine learning, they're not part of the Apple Intelligence capabilities being introduced across Apple devices later this year. That means Safari's improvements will be available on more phones than just the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max , plus whatever iPhone 16 models come out later this fall.

With that in mind, here's what to expect from iOS 18 Safari once you upgrade to the new iPhone software, whether that's when the full version comes out later this year or Apple makes the iOS 18 public beta available in July.

iOS 18 Safari: Highlights

Highlights feature in iOS 18 Safari

Think of Highlights, the biggest of the two improvements to iOS 18 Safari, as a kind of hyper-focused summary tool. Instead of merely summarizing what's on the page, though, Highlights uses machine intelligence to identify the key bits on information on a particular page and calls them out in a pop-up window as you browse.

An example Apple uses throughout its iOS 18 preview shows a web page for a hotel where Highlights has called up a window showing the hotel's location on a map, plus quick links for driving directions or placing a call to the hotel. Other examples of Highlights include Wikipedia summaries of a person, playback links for songs, or summarized reviews for a movie or TV show.

It's unclear from Apple's demo whether Highlights appear automatically in Safari, or if you need to tap a button to get the Highlights window to pop-up. Footnotes on Apple's iOS 18 summary page indicate that the feature will only work with U.S. English sites, at least initially.

iOS 18 Safari: Reader

Reader in iOS 18

The Reader tool in iOS 18 Safari also picks up some summarization skills, giving you the opportunity to read a quick overview of a web page when you switch to Reader mode. Reader takes things a step further by generating a table of contents for a web article that lets you see how a page is organized. Presumably, you'll also be able to jump to specific sections of the article.

Galaxy AI tools on board the best Samsung phones add summarization features, so it's good to see them get baked into iOS 18 as well. A concise summary of a web page that you've stumbled upon can give you a better idea of what an article is about, while a table of contents can help you more easily drill down to the parts of a topic that interest you.

The summarization tools in Reader appear to be limited to English in the initial iOS 18 release, though regional support is far more extensive. Besides the U.S., Apple promises availability in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the U.K.

Other Safari changes beyond the iPhone

Safari preview at WWDC 2024

Safari is available across Apple's different platforms, and there are some improvements coming to the web browser that are available for Safari on other devices. Specifically, Mac users who upgrade to macOS Sequoia will get a new way of watching web-based videos with a new Video Viewer that automatically detects when there's video on a page. Video Viewer breaks that out into a separate window with its own playback controls; click away, and the viewer becomes a separate picture-in-picture window.

Along with the Highlights and Reader additions, Safari on macOS Sequoia also promises performance improvements. In fact, Apple says the updated Mac version will be the world's fastest browser, with up to four hours more battery life than Google's Chrome browser on streaming video.

iOS 18 Safari outlook

Safari's seen more substantial changes in previous iOS updates, but that's not to dismiss the importance of what Apple's doing in iOS 18. With both Highlights and Reader leaning heavily on machine learning to power their new summary tools, iOS 18 Safari offers a taste of what Apple hopes to deliver throughout the iPhone, only without the stringent system requirements that the Apple Intelligence features demand.

When (and How) to Enable Safari Reader View

By J. D. Biersdorfer

  • Feb. 14, 2017

Q. Apple’s Safari browser used to have a Reader button on the right side of the address bar that made the webpage show just the text so you could read without videos, ads, animation and other stuff getting in the way. I recently got a new Mac and don’t see this button anymore. Is it gone?

A. Apple’s Safari Reader feature for distraction-free text consumption was introduced in 2010 and is still part of the browser for the Mac . The feature is also available on the iOS version of Safari and other browsers (like Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge ) have their own reader-friendly variations or add-ons. Safari’s design has evolved over time, and in the current version of the program, the Reader button is now on the left side of the address bar and represented by a small icon depicting horizontal lines of text.

Not every site on the web supports Safari Reader, so if you do not see the icon, the page most likely does not support Apple’s decluttering function. However, if the site is compatible and you click the Reader button, you now have more options than before for customizing the look of your temporarily simplified page.

After you click the icon to switch into Reader mode, the other side of Safari’s address bar shows a pair of capital “A” letters. Click this icon to personalize your view.

From the menu, you can change the text size by clicking the small or large “A” on the screen. If you do not like black text on a bright white background, change the color scheme to sepia — or switch to white text on a dark gray or black background. You can also choose between eight different fonts for your Reader text. Click back into the address bar to close the menu and click the Reader icon again to switch back to the standard webpage view.

7 Best Fixes for Reader Mode Not Working in Safari

safari browser reader

Paurush dabbles around iOS and Mac while his close encounters are with Android and Windows. Before becoming a writer, he produced videos for brands like Mr. Phone and Digit. On weekends, he is a full-time cinephile trying to reduce his never-ending watchlist, often making it longer.

The Safari browser offers a built-in Reader Mode option for a better reading experience. If you like reading articles saved in your Reading List, you can enable Reader Mode to remove all distractions like ads, popups, video playback windows, and more.

N_Best_Fixes_for_Reader_Mode_Not_Working_in_Safari

But some users complain that the Reading Mode option doesn’t work as desired or gets grayed out in Safari. If this is happening with you as well, we will share the best solutions to fix the Reader Mode not working in Safari on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

1. Check if the Website Supports Reader Mode

The Reader Mode works for websites that have a lot of text. This applies to web pages with articles, news, blogs, newsletters, etc. If the feature is not working, your current web page may not have too much text.

2. Check Reader Mode Settings

If your web page has ample text but you still can’t use the Reader Mode in Safari, we suggest checking the Reader Mode settings on your Apple device.

On iPhone and iPad

Step 1: Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and visit the website for which Reader Mode is not working.

Step 2: Tap the Reader View icon at the bottom and select Website Settings.

website options safari iphone

Step 3: You can enable automatic Reader Mode for the website if you visit it frequently.

You can also try enabling the Desktop version of the website and see if you can now use Reader Mode.

Step 1: Press Command + Spacebar keyboard shortcut to open Spotlight Search, type Safari, and press Return.

open safari on mac

Step 2: Visit the website for which you want to use the Reader Mode. Then click the Safari option at the top-left corner and select Settings.

Step 3: Click the Website tab and select Reader from the left menu.

Step 4: Ensure that you have not disabled the Reader View option for the website.

You can also enable Reader View for other websites that you visit using Safari.

3. Disable Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode helps in saving the battery life of your Apple device. But if the Reader Mode is not working in Safari and you want to keep using the feature for longer time, there is no harm in turning off Low Power Mode. This feature won’t require too much battery power.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on Battery.

Step 2: Tap the toggle next to Low Power Mode to disable it.

4. Force Quit and Relaunch Safari

Force quitting and relaunching Safari will give the app a fresh start and should help fix the issue if you are still facing it.

Step 1: Swipe up from the home to reveal the background app windows.

Step 2: Swipe right to look for Safari and swipe up to close the app window.

Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on General

Step 1: Open the Settings app and tap on General.

Step 2: Tap on Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad.

Step 4: Follow the on-screen instructions to check if the problem is solved.
