Our trip to Iceland was one of the top ones on our retirement bucket list. I am an amateur photographer and enjoy wildlife and landscape photography. We were considering a self drive tour around Iceland to afford me the opportunity to take pictures whenever the opportunity presented itself. When I thought of the prospect of driving the winter roads in Iceland and the fact that we didn’t have enough information on where to find the best photo spots we opted for a guided tour. Again, guided tours often don’t offer the time it takes to setup and take landscapes so, we opted for a Guided Photography Tour. Guide to Iceland offered a number of choices in terms of length of trip and photo opportunities and we finally settled on an 11 day guided photo safari from Iceland Photo Tours. It included a small group tour via comfortable van, private room lodging, breakfasts and a knowledgeable photographer to inform and guide us around the island. The company also provided rubber boots for some wet photo locations and crampons for walking when it was icy outside, which was quite a bit of the time. Our guide Vincenzo Maaza was originally from Italy but has a many years long residency in Iceland and extensive experience guiding glacier, mountain, and photography tours. His prime concerns were for our group’s happiness with our photography experience in Iceland and our personal comfort. He went the extra mile in many cases to get us to the best and sometimes secret locations for photographs. He helped us in setup and showed us techniques for taking advantage of the unique landscape’s photo opportunities. He knew of many great locations but was also always on the lookout for new ones as weather changes affected the agenda for the day’s shooting. I remember one incident specially where we had been on a long day of shooting over dinner Vincenzo asked each of us, individually, whether we’d like to set up for the Aurora that evening. The weather outside was pretty frightful as it was snowing sideways. Everyone else was ready for a warm relaxing night inside and replied absolutely not. I hesitantly said no and he picked up on my slower answer to the question and repeatedly said he’d be “more than happy” to take just me out for a look. I finally convinced him that I was sincere and that convinced him to stay inside and warm too. We were treated to many excellent locations and afforded plenty of time to get our shots of the beautiful landscape. We had some good weather and some “not quite so good” weather but that is always expected and unavoidable in winter in Iceland. Vincenzo also treated us to some of his post processing knowledge on his computer on couple of evenings, before dinner, after our daily photo shoots. The accommodations were very comfortable and in some cases quaint and historical additionally. Vincenzo’s driving skills were on display a number of times when it was particularly windy and/or snowy and icy. We all felt safe in the company’s modern, comfortable van and when we were out tromping around, fitted with our crampons. We really made to feel as though we were a group of lifelong friends on a road trip together. The trip was as memorable as we had hoped and the photos taken will help us remember the trip the rest of our lives.

This trip was spectacular. I didn’t want it to end! It is really great that the short trips are offered because then those who are cash strapped can still have an amazing adventure! On this 4 day trip even though mid winter we really made the most out of the time and light. The itinerary was perfect. The expertise during shoots was brilliant. Siggy and Brinjur (I’m sorry I forget how to spell his name!) were funny, entertaining, passionate about Iceland. I loved it that brinjur had a real passion for the more experimental and creative aspects of landscape photography because that really resonated with me. The accommodation was top notch. My only negative was that I did not want to leave!

Photography in Iceland

Iceland is a photographer’s paradise, a land of mesmerizing landscapes and infinitely interesting subjects, be they cascading waterfalls, creeping glaciers, jagged canyons, or weatherbeaten coastlines.

With the explosion of photography’s popularity across the world, it is no wonder that Iceland is fast becoming one of the most photographed destinations on earth.

Photographers of all backgrounds, creeds, and caliber visit Iceland each year to capture their experiences, traveling across the country in search of that ultimate shot. Be they Instagrammers, nature photographers, or cultural shutterbugs, all visitors to Iceland will be immediately taken with the urge to document, frame, and shoot their surroundings.

Photo tours and workshops in Iceland allow guests to sharpen their skills behind the camera, acting under the tutelage of an experienced and knowledgeable guide.

Taking you to some of this country’s biggest attractions and providing opportunities to capture phenomena like the northern lights and the midnight sun, your guide will ensure that you return home with a portfolio brimming with new contributions.

Photo tours and workshops can be concentrated to a single day with only a few attractions focused upon, or alternatively, they can extend for up to two weeks, allowing visitors every opportunity to maximize their photography in Iceland.

You may visit Iceland’s most photographed feature, Mt. Kirkjufell, most famously portrayed as “the mountain like an arrowhead” from HBO’s ‘Games of Thrones.’ Alternatively, you could spend time at “the Crown Jewel of Iceland”, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, photographing the hundreds of icebergs that float peacefully on the still surface.

Another option could be spending time in Iceland’s picturesque capital city, Reykjavik, photographing many iconic cultural landmarks, including Hallgrimskirkja church and Harpa Concert Hall.

Whatever you choose, you will collect a wealth of fascinating photographs that will forever bring you back to Iceland.

2024 ICELAND PHOTOGRAPHY TOUR ITINERARY

Our Iceland Photo Tour itinerary is tentative and flexible, as it will be adjusted according to the weather conditions. During the night sessions, we will move to areas with clear skies to increase our chances of seeing the Northern Lights.

September is statistically the best time to see the Aurora in terms of solar activity, so if the weather permits, this will be an Iceland Northern Lights tour .

DAY 1: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

Our Iceland photo tour begins at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), where we will be waiting for you to take you to our first hotel.

After a meet and greet with the rest of the group and a welcome speech, we will do a quick gear review to make sure that you have your camera gear ready for the adventure!

Later, we’ll do a  sunset session around the oldest lighthouse in Iceland;  Reykjanesviti . In this area, you will find some photogenic cliffs and sea stacks where we will capture our first images. If there are favorable conditions at night, our first-Northern Ligths photography session will be in the Reykjanes Peninsula with different locations in the cliffs,  Lake Kleifarvatn, and the photogenic houses of Straumur.

DAY 2: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the second day of our Iceland photography tour, our first stop will be  Seljalandsfoss, one of the most impressive waterfalls on the island. As we get closer, you’ll see its tall elegant shape from the distance. One of the highlights here is walking behind the waterfall. Close to this waterfall, we will visit another secluded waterfall called Gljufrafoss .

We will continue along the Icelandic Ring Road until we reach one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland, Skogafoss. This massive stream of water will take your breath away. It is one of our favorite spots on the trip, and it’ll probably be familiar from popular series such as Vikings or Game of Thrones.

After Skogafoss, we’ll visit the nearby Kvernufoss. This waterfall tends to be overshadowed by the neighboring Skogafoss despite being one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Iceland. Here, we’ll show you different compositions and we’ll also walk behind the waterfall for some unique views.

If conditions are favorable, we will return to Seljalandsfoss to photograph the sunset, and if chances are in favor for seeing the Northern Lights , we will take photographs from Skogafoss .

DAY 3:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the third day of our Iceland photo tour , we’ll explore one of the most photogenic regions in the country— a landscape adorned with glaciers, glacier lagoons, and glacier beaches . Our first glacier of the day will be Svinafellsjokull glacier, one of Iceland’s most striking glaciers, which well meet at eye level after a brief walk.

Later, after checking in to our accommodation, we’ll witness a serene sunset at Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon , renowned for good reason as one of the most photogenic spots in Iceland. Returning at night, we hope to capture the elusive beauty of the Aurora Borealis over this iconic spot.

photo tours of iceland

En route to the glaciers, we’ll make stops at the Fjadragljufur canyon,  a delicately beautiful moss-covered canyon, and the distinctive Lomagnupur rock , shooting almost straight up from the ground. These locations will add diverse elements to our visual journey. This day promises not just photographic opportunities but an authentic encounter with the raw, untamed beauty of Iceland’s icy landscapes.

Iceland summer photography tour

DAY 4:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

As the morning sun breaks on the fourth day of our Iceland guided photo tour, we’ll visit the surreal Diamond Beach for our morning shoot. Diamond Beach is an otherworldly landscape where the sunrise casts an ethereal glow on icebergs scattered along the black sand. These icebergs travel downstream from the nearby Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and wash up in Diamond Beach when the tide is low.

After the morning shoot, we’ll revisit the glacier lagoons of Jokulsarlon and Fjallsarlon, now bathed in the clarity of daylight, offering new perspectives and compositions.

The day takes a thrilling turn as we dive into one of Iceland’s most remarkable adventures—a journey into an ice cave . September marks the reopening of these wonders to the public, and we will visit them with the safety and expertise of a local Icelandic guide. Get ready for an exploration where photography meets the raw, transient allure of the ice caves, creating visually striking abstract images.

If the forecast for the Northern Lights is promising, we’ll be back at the glacier lagoons to photograph them.

DAY 5:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the fifth day of our Iceland photography tour , our journey along the Ring Road leads us to the picturesque village of Hofn. After settling into our hotel, we’ll head over to the breathtaking Stokksnes beach , featuring its striking black sand dunes and the majestic Vestrahorn as the focal point. Amidst this stunning landscape, we’ll explore diverse compositions, experimenting with reflections, framing techniques using the sand dunes, and leveraging the waves as captivating leading lines; there are limitless possibilities!

For our evening shoot, we’ll venture to the easternmost edge of our Iceland expedition—the enchanting Hvalnes Lighthouse . This coastal gem offers a prime vantage point for capturing both the iconic lighthouse and the awe-inspiring silhouette of Eystrahorn , standing tall as one of Iceland’s most captivating mountains.

Should the night sky favor us with a promising forecast for the Northern Lights, we’ll return to Stokksnes to photograph the Aurora.

DAY 6: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the sixth day of our Iceland photography trip, we’ll start our visual journey with a breathtaking sunrise shoot at the iconic Stokksnes . We’ll then hit the road and start driving back to the west.

En route to our final destination, if time permits, we’ll stop to do an optional hike to the beautiful Svartifoss Waterfall , this waterfall is surrounded by basalt columns which makes this setting unique. We’ll then continue heading towards Vik , the southernmost town in Iceland and a significant hub in the region. Nestled against the backdrop of dramatic landscapes, Vik is a true gem for photographers.

At Vik, we’ll do a sunset session at the renowned Dyrholaey Arch , where the interplay of light and shadow paints the coastal cliffs in hues of gold and amber. The black sand beach of Reynisfjara , with its striking basalt columns, offers more stunning compositions for us to explore.

As night falls, we’ll keep our eyes on the sky (and the forecasts), paying attention to the possibility of witnessing the Northern Lights. If the forecast is favorable, Vik Beach or the surrounding tidal pools will serve as our stage, where we’ll capture the celestial dance against the mirrored reflections.

Golden morning light at Reynisfjara beach

DAY 7: ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the seventh day of our Iceland photo tour , we will do a sunrise photo shoot from the Black Sand Beach in Vik. From this location, we’ve experienced some of the most spectacular sunrises on our tours. After breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to the Golden Circle.

Iceland’s Golden Circle is a popular route between some of the most visited  locations on the island. We will start photographing the famous Geysir Strokkur , a fountain-type geyser that erupts every 3 to 4 minutes.

Then, we will drive a short distance to Bruarfoss Waterfall , one of the most special waterfalls in Iceland. This waterfall is part of the Bruar River; this river is melted from one of the Icelandic glaciers having a distinctive blue color, which is why Bruarfoss is also called “Iceland’s bluest waterfall”. The scenery around this waterfall is a feast for the eyes, especially at this time of year when the fall colors turn the foliage into vibrant colors .

During the day, we’ll do some editing classes , where we’ll show you the best techniques to bring the photos you’ve taken during the trip to life. During these classes, we’ll teach some basic postprocessing techniques, as well as more advanced content if you want to dive deeper.

If there were Northern Lights that night, we would be back at Bruarfoss or we would take the chance to visit Gullfoss and enjoy the location for ourselves at night.

Black sand beach in Iceland with sea stacks during a sunrise

DAY 8:  ICELAND PHOTO TOUR

On the eighth day of our Iceland photography adventure , we will drive to the  mighty Gullfoss   Waterfall , where we will photograph this massive “foss” from different vantage points using long exposures to capture the motion of the water.

After sunrise, we’ll head back to the hotel to have breakfast and pack.

After breakfast, we’ll drive west to Reykjavik and the Reykjanes peninsula to spend the last night of our unforgettable Iceland photo tour.

If the forecast is promising and we can see the aurora,  we will go back to either  Lake Kleifarvatn or  Reykjanesviti  for one last night session.

Unforgettable, frequent questions about our iceland photo tours, what level do i need to attend to this photo tour to iceland.

Whether you are experienced or just starting in photography,  you are all welcome, and I am convinced that you will progress very fast. Together, we will get you back home with greater and deeper knowledge in many photography topics.

Also, we can Zoom or Skype beforehand to discuss your skill level, knowledge, and your goals with this tour.

WHAT PHYSICAL CONDITIONS DO I NEED TO BE IN?

All the places we will visit in this Iceland photography tour are very close to the road, and we won’t have to walk more than a mile with the exception of the “Svartifoss” waterfall and “Bruarfoss”, where the hike is around 3-4 miles round trip.

We will be driving, walking, and shooting a lot during the tour, especially at night when there are chances to see the Aurora, so we recommend being in  good physical shape  to be able to enjoy this experience.

AM I TOO YOUNG/OLD FOR THIS ICELAND PHOTO TOUR?

There is no age limit. This trip is perfect for anyone  over 18 years old  who wants to photograph Iceland with us.

CAN MY NON-PHOTOGRAPHER COMPANION JOIN US ON THE TOUR?

Non-photographer companions are welcome to join the tour, and they need to book a spot under the same price and conditions as any other participant. (We don’t allow non-participant companions tagging along with the group). We have had plenty of non-photographer companions over the years and all of them enjoyed an amazing experience. As long as they enjoy nature, beautiful landscapes, and are a bit patient with the schedules of a photo tour, joining the trip can be a great experience regardless of the shooting.

CAN I BRING MY DRONE?

Capture the Atlas is  drone-friendly . Our tour leaders are experienced drone pilots and can help you with your drone photography. However, we are not responsible for accidental damage or fines if you fly it in restricted areas.

Active volcanoes, endless glaciers, lush valleys, black sand beaches, mountains & fjords, skies colored by the Aurora Borealis…Iceland is paradise for photographers for good reason. It’s very easy to feel like in a fantasy world when you see and shoot across all those spectacular locations, and this trip will help you discover all the spectacular things that Iceland has to offer.

Expect excitement like in no other trip when we prepare to go out and chase the Northern Lights. This experience can’t be described in images or words; you have to live through it and, believe me, after that you’ll understand why shooting the “green lady” is so mesmerizing and addictive.

Iceland is one of the first places that I started shooting when I first picked up a camera many years ago. I fell so profoundly in love with everything on the island that I’ve been traveling there every year since that initial trip. Iceland is our signature photo tour for many reasons, and I can’t wait to show you the magic of this place!

Like being on another planet, experience iceland’s surreal beauty..

The summer sun never sets on this breathtakingly lush land of verdant hills, active volcanoes, fumaroles and mud-pots. Experience this land of surreal beauty on our 6-day Iceland Photo Tour and Cultural Adventure. From Þingvellir National Park to nearby world-famous Golden Falls, you’ll journey to Vík, whose huge black sea columns are said to be trolls turned to stone. Beneath the sea cliffs of Skógar, you’ll tour Iceland’s finest folk museum before exploring the glaciers, lava fields and black-sand desert at Skaftafell National Park. Boat through Jökulsárlón Lagoon’s massive blue-tinted ice forms. You’ll photograph at least 5 magnificent waterfalls. Even the cuisine will surprise you, whether it’s butter-grilled langoustine tails or Icelandic delicacies like arctic char, trout, free-range lamb and reindeer. It’s as if this land was created for the photographer, to embrace and capture it’s never ending beauty.

West Iceland – Snæfellsnes Peninsula Extension

Join us as we head west on a mystical tour to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and surroundings on our 3-day extension to West Iceland. Kirkjufell Mountain was a filming location for Game of Thrones (season 7), that included Eldborg, Berserk lava, Grundarfjordur, Djupalonssandur black beach, Arnarstapi fishing village, Londrangar and Snæfellsjökull Glacier. These locations are a testament to the magical beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Join us as we head west on a magical mystical tour to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and surroundings. Countless lunar landscapes and volcanic vistas lie in store for us as we drive west out of Reykjavik and head towards the magnificent Snæfellsjökull glacier.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, utilize and approach your environment, photograph people indigenous to the region and the cultural considerations and challenges of photographing in a foreign country. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the unique landscape of Iceland.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Iceland 6 days, day 1 | reykjavík.

We meet in the morning at our hotel in Reykjavik where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles to Great Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

From here we set out for an amazing afternoon exploring and photographing the quaint yet sophisticated city of Reykjavik. As the capital of Iceland, and home to more than 80% of the population, Reykjavik is really quite impressive and a wonderful photographic opportunity.

In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at one of our favorite restaurants in Reykjavik. (D)

Day 2 | Solheimasandur - Reynisfjara - Dyrhólaey - Höfn

After an early morning breakfast, we depart Reykjavik for our drive along Iceland’s southern coast. The contrasts are breathtaking, with spectacular black sand beaches, a dominating white glacier, spectacular waterfalls, volcanic lava fields, and lush green meadows (during the summer months), all in the same region. Serenity, energy and forces of nature combine to make the region of Vatnajökull a never-to-be-forgotten experience. We will spend the entire day driving, exploring and photographing. (In October and April, if we are fortunate, we will see the northern lights dancing above the glacier.)

Our first stop will be the epic Solheimasandur Plane Wreck on a desolate stretch of black beach. In 1973 a United States Navy DC-3 plane ran out of fuel and crashed here. The abandoned and weathered fuselage can make for some very dramatic images. Next we will explore Reynisfjara Beach* with its enormous basalt stacks, roaring waves and a dramatic view of Dyrhólaey. Reynisfjara is widely considered to be the most beautiful black sand beach in Iceland. In 1991, National Geographic voted Reynisfjara as one of the top 10 non-tropical beaches to visit on the planet.

We’ll have lunch in the small fishing village of Vik. Afterwards we will continue our drive, stopping every so often for a breathtaking panoramic shot as well as Icelandic horses. In the late afternoon we arrive at our hotel in the small fishing village of Höfn. (B)

NOTE: During April and October we may choose to fly from Reykjavik to Höfn on the morning of day two, and then continue on our drive west slightly altering the schedules for days two and three. No locations will be missed, just the schedules adjusted. Weather and the amount of light will play a role in this decision.

Day 3 | Vatnajökull Glacier - Jökulsárlón Lagoon - Svartifoss

After an early breakfast we check out and visit the small village of Höfn, where fishing trawlers depart to fish the Atlantic Ocean. Next we set out to visit many of Vatnajökull’s outlets and outwash areas. We’ll begin by photographing the black sand beach around the inlet to Jökulsárlón. Here we will capture the melting clear icebergs as they lay stranded on the black beach, battered by the force of the ocean’s waves.

After lunch on the beach we make our way to Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon for an unforgettable Zodiac boat ride through a sea of icebergs, each with its own unique shape, color, transparency and personality. This may very well be your most memorable moment in Iceland. The glacial scenery continues with a visit to the stunning Skaftafell, Iceland’s second largest National Park, where the landscape has been formed over thousands of years, from the influences of fire and ice. Skaftafell is a true oasis, after driving through the vast black lava sand plains. We’ll hike the 1 mile trail down to Svartifoss Waterfall, one of Iceland’s most unique waterfalls. This elegant waterfall is framed by black columnar basalt formations measuring 65 feet tall. (B)

Day 4 | Skógafoss - Seljalandsfoss - Gullfoss - Geysir

We are up early for a day of waterfalls. After breakfast, we depart for Skógafoss, but not before stopping at the cliffs at Dyrhólaey, where we will venture out and try to get a glimpse of puffins.

Skógafoss Waterfall is next on our hit list. This massive waterfall can be shot from a distance, from above or right under it. It’s easily accessible. One of the best things about Iceland in the summer are the roaring waterfalls, caused by the melting glaciers. Next we drive to the small but high waterfall Seljalandsfoss, where we can walk a path behind it. But the best vantage point is from high up, off to the right side. Be sure to bring protection for your gear, and plenty of lens wipes to help clean off your lens from the constant spray of water. We’ll have lunch by the falls.

After a two hour drive we arrive at our final waterfall destination. Gullfoss, the Golden waterfall, is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Here you will see thousands of tons of water thunder majestically down in a double-fall into a deep gorge. Along the way we will photograph Icelandic horses, which we are always on the lookout for. By the early evening we check into our hotel in Geysir, followed by dinner. (B)

Day 5 | Þingvellir - Reykjanes Peninsula - Blue Lagoon

After breakfast we view Strokkur Geysir, which spouts up to 100 ft high. Welcome to the world famous Geysir region, where hot springs are in abundance, such as the famous great Geysir which has given name to hot springs all over the world. After checkout we will leave the Geysir area and drive to Þingvellir National Park. Þingvellir is truly a  remarkable geological site, and the most historic place on the island, where the world’s oldest democratic parliament was founded in 930.

We continue on to the Nesjavellir geothermal area and on to the striking lava fields of Reykjanes Peninsula. More than half of the peninsula is covered with lava flows and you will see lava cones and craters of different sizes and shapes. We’ll arrive in the small fishing village of Grindavík where we will have lunch, followed by an exploration of the peninsula.

By late afternoon we arrive at the Blue Lagoon for a relaxing (2 hour) dip in 101°F / 38°C therapeutic geothermal water. The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by a moss-covered lava field dating back to 1226. Be sure to bring your bathing suit. You’ll have access to a locker, showers, a restaurant, and a lagoon bar for drinks. It’s a wonderful way to end our adventure. In the evening we enjoy a wonderful “Farewell Dinner” with great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of our adventure. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Reykjavík

During breakfast, we review our past week’s photos, trade contact information and bid you farewell before heading to the airport for our return home. For guests who are staying on for our 3-day extension to West Iceland’s Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we will depart our hotel at 11 AM. See below for extension details. (B)

WEST ICELAND   3- DAY EXTENSION

Day 1 | snæfellsnes peninsula - kirkjufell mountain - stykkisholmur.

We depart Reykjavik for our adventure to Snæfellsnes Peninsula located in West Iceland. Our journey will take us through the town of Borgarnes and the beach in Ytri Tunga, which is a well known seal colony. The seals are friendly and curious and will climb up on the rocks near the sandy beach. We’ll stop at the fishing hamlets of Arnarstapi and Hellnar, and then walk along the cliffs where the view of the sea is breathtaking. In Djúpalónssandur you will discover incredible rock formations. The beaches are covered with small black stones, which are unique to Iceland. If you like, we will hike to one of the most impressive formations called Lóndrangar, which are a pair of rock pinnacles made of basalt (approx. 230 ft high). We’ll also stop in Saxhóll, which is a 330 ft high volcanic crater. From the top of the crater you can enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the area.

At the end of the day we will drive through three small fishing villages on the way to the atmospheric village of Stykkisholmur. But not before ending on a high with a sunset shoot of the majestic Kirkjufell Mountain, which is one of the most popular photo stops in Iceland. In Stykkisholmur we’ll be staying at the unique Hotel Fransiskus, a beautiful hotel located in a former monastery. (B)

Day 2 | Kirkjufell Mountain - Gerðuberg - Hraunfossar

After breakfast we return to Kirkjufell Mountain for shots using the morning light. Later we’ll visit the Bjarnarhöfn Shark Museum, where you can taste some traditional Icelandic shark with local schnapps while viewing hundreds of fishing and boating artifacts. Driving across the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, our next stop is at Gerðuberg, a big wall of huge Basalt columns. The cliff is 1650 ft long and 40 to 50 ft high, one of the highest in Iceland. This is one of the marvels of nature that just makes you stop and wonder about the architectural brilliance of mother earth.

Next we depart Snæfellsnes Peninsula and head east to the historic Borgarfjordur area where you will see the great Hraunfossar, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 300 ft across the Hallmundarhraun lava field. Another treat is the waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, “the waterfall of the children,” comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in a previous century. After exploring the wild west of Iceland for two unforgettable days, we return to Reykjavík, settle in, and enjoy a late-night dinner. (B)

Day 3 | Reykjavík

While enjoying an early breakfast we conduct our final group discussion, review our past week’s photos, trade contact information and sadly bid you farewell before checking out of our hotel. (B)

Iceland Photography Tours

This trip includes everything except your flights and food. Once you arrive, I’ll look after you, airport transfers, transport during the tour, accommodation, guiding, and all tuition.

This Iceland Photography Tour has been planned with the photographer right in the center, we’ll go where the light is at it’s best or getting you to where you’ll have clear skies to watch and photograph the Aurora Borealis. Although we are working from a fixed itinerary, do not despair, it won’t be a case of getting 15 minutes to photograph each location, we’ll have plenty of time to explore the areas and if we’re driving down the road and you spot something you like, if safe to do so, I will stop!

Each day we will be on location before sunrise and shooting all day until after sunset.

As with all my Iceland Photography Tours & Workshops I like to keep the numbers small, and this photo tour is limited to only five people! This allows me to spend more one on one time with you, helping you with any questions you may have.

The South Coast & Snæfellsnes / North tour we will use a 9-seater minibus or a similar vehicle. The Highlands camping adventure, on the other hand, will involve a Land Rover Defender for transportation.

Don’t just take my word for it…

Trip Highlights

  • Seljalandsfoss
  • Reynisfjara
  • Vik Black Sand Beach
  • Skaftafell (1 hour hike)
  • Jokulsarlon & Diamond Beach
  • Vestrahorn & Eystrahorn

From my experience of running over 30 photography tours, having a fixed daily itinerary is limiting your chances of going home with the best possible images.

I work with the weather as much as possible and visit locations based on the best forecasted weather conditions. This ensures that I’m putting you in the right place at the right time.

Each morning will be on location 1 hour or so before sunrise, and each sunset we’ll be there until 1 hour after sunset.

The tour will start and end at Keflavik, Iceland (KEF). When looking at flights, please arrive no later than midday on arrival day. If you need to travel the day before, please let me know and I can collect you from your accommodation in the Reykjavik area.

Please note the itinerary below is a sample for the Iceland South Coast Photography Tour, it will be adjusted for the Highlands & Snæfellsnes & North Tour.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

You will fly to Keflavik (KEF) airport. I will collect everyone from the airport in our nine seater minibus, timings will be arranged in our private WhatsApp group leading up to the tour. We’ll start making our way to our first accommodation in the Vik area with a stop on the way at the supermarket to gather some groceries for a few days. Once we’ve all settled in, we’ll run over the plan for the week and if time allows we’ll squeeze in a sunset shoot or if clear skies allow we’ll head out on a thrilling aurora chase.

Day 2 to 3 – Vik Adventures

This is where the real adventure begins.

Over the next few days in the Vik area we will be photographing at every opportunity we can get. We’ll be getting up early every morning (regardless of weather) to be on location 1 hour before sunrise, after each sunrise shoot we’ll head for breakfast before heading to our next location.

Each sunset location, we’ll be there roughly 2 hours before so that we can each scope out our sunset composition.

Day 4 to 5 – Jökulsárlón/Höfn Exploration

Our journey then pivots to the enchanting Jökulsárlón/Höfn area. We’ll be focusing on Diamond Beach, Vestrahorn & Eystrahorn! Maintaining our dedication to capturing the best shots, the early mornings and pre-sunset hours will remain our prime focus, with each locale promising unique photographic treasures.

Again, if clear skies allow, we’ll be out chasing the Aurora again.

Day 6 – Vik Return & Keflavík Transition

As the day concludes, we’ll head to our final accommodation in the Keflavík area to be positioned optimally for those with early departures the next day. We’ll finish off with a sunset shoot at Reykjanestá .

As most people will have early flights the next morning, aurora chasing on this night will be optional.

Day 7 – Departure Day

Goodbyes are forever, I’ll be saying see you later as I hope you’ll join me on another adventure. We’ll head to the airport where everyone can catch their flights home.

Composition :  Composition is everything in landscape photography. Learn how to compose a landscape photograph.

Long Exposures:  Learn how to use long exposures so you can create dramatic and interesting photographs.

Histogram:  Learn how to read your histogram so that you’re exposing correctly and capturing maximum data with no clipping.

Low Light:  Learn how to photograph the night sky and if luck is on our side, we’ll also shoot the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

Editing:  Learn how I edit my photographs using Adobe Lightroom Classic with final touches in Photoshop.

Good to Know

Flights November  – Fly to Keflavik (KEF) airport. Most major European airports will have direct flights to Iceland.

Accommodation: Due to constraints in availability and the shift of many houses to dorm-style accommodation, we’ll be transitioning to multiple stay locations. This actually works in our favour as we’ll be able to stay closer to locations and maximise shooting time and reduce driving time! On the final night, we’ll be staying in twin rooms in the Keflavík area, optimally located for those with early morning departures.

Self Catering / Meals  – All my tours are self catering. We will visit the supermarket (Bonus) on the day we arrive and gather what’s needed for a few days so that we can bring packed lunches with us each day. We will revisit the supermarket a couple of times throughout the trip too. There will be opportunities throughout the trip to visit cafes and the odd restaurant if we have time. But primarily, we will be eating as we go.

Hiking  – Many of the locations are easy access from the car. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.

Spending Money  – I average between £200-300 for the week. Card is accepted everywhere, cash isn’t needed.

UK Mobile Network  – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.

photo tours of iceland

Experience first hand the reason why Iceland is a world renowned paradise for landscape photographers!

Iceland is a unique jewel thanks to the variety of its landscape heritage. Majestic waterfalls, geysers, floating icebergs, surreal blue ice sculptures, epic seascapes and picturesque coastal roads with stunning views onto the deep blue ocean. From sunrise to sunset you will not miss a chance to capture the unique magic of the fascinating winter light at the edge of the Arctic Circle.

This tour offers the ultimate chance to improve your photographic skills and expand your portfolio with unique landscape shots.

Day 1 : Arrival in Reykjavik

The journey to Reykjavik is individual.  We greet you at 2pm at Keflavík International Airport before we make our way to our first accommodation in Snæfellsnes National Park, which we will reach in the late afternoon.  With an introduction to landscape photography and a short get-to-know-you round, we prepare for the next few days.  If the weather conditions allow it, after dinner together we will focus on the first spots near our hotel and practice taking night shots.

photo tours of iceland

Day 2 : Snaefellsness National Par

Our photographic journey of discovery begins in a comfortable minibus from Reykjavik to the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula. The sparsely populated peninsula reproduces all the charms of the big island in a very small area, which is why it has been called “Island in Miniature”, Snaefellsness is known for its rugged basaltic south coast with sea stacks that rise from the waves of the Atlantic Ocean, but on top of it it’s known for one of the most epic landmarks of the entire island, the Mount Kirkufell with its iconic waterfalls. “A mountain shaped like an arrowhead”, that’s how it was described in the world famous TV series “Game of Thrones”. We will look for the best angles to frame the Mountain according to the conditions of the winter landscape, and hopefully enjoy the northern lights dancing above us at night.

Day 3 :The Golden Circle route

We leave the Snaefellsness peninsula for the famous “Golden Circle” route, winding through three equally breathtaking locations in southwest Iceland: the Þingvellir National Park, the Geyser Geothermal Area and the Gullfoss Waterfall. We’ll dwell on the classic views of the partly frozen waterfall, which in winter it has something magical due to the contrasty bluish water with the pale tones of the snowy surrounding landscape.  At sunrise we’ll walk around the vapours rising from the surreal vivid coloured ground made of hot pools, mud pots and fumaroles, where we will have the chance to photograph the famous geyser Strokkur, which “erupts” about every ten minutes and sprays vapor and hot water as high as 20m towards the sky.

Day 4 : Southern waterfalls and Vik ì Myrdal

We make out drive to famous waterfalls that make Iceland one of the world’s most popular destinations for landscape photography: Seljalandfoss, Skógafoss and the hidden waterfall of Gljufrabui.

Although they’re far from having the maximum water flow in winter, the surrounding Christmassy landscape, with snow-covered frozen ground and crystalline icicles, makes the waterfalls a true winter highlight.

We reach Vík í Mýrdal in time to catch the best light from the cliffs above the black beach of Reynisfjara. With fantastic surf at sunset, we let ourselves be inspired by the beautiful view of the Reynisdrangar basalt columns. These iconic rocks are of volcanic origin and are said to be petrified trolls.

Day 5 : Vatnajökull National Park

We catch the sunrise vibe of the coastal landscape of Vík before enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel and leave to one of the most idyllic locations of the trip: the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Due to its breathtaking beauty it has become one of the country’s most popular attractions and is one of Iceland’s natural crown jewels. Huge icebergs break off the glacier and lie scattered in the bay, while tiny blocks of ice glisten in the sun like diamonds along the black sand beach. This is how the beach got its nickname: Diamond Beach. The glacier is the Breiðamerkurjökull at the foot of the Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Iceland. The area itself – together with the other smaller glacier bays nearby – offers endless creative possibilities for photography at any time of day, with long and short shutter speeds.

Next day we will enjoy a private tour to explore a true Icelandic winter highlight, the bluish ice caves that form along the southern front of the Vatnajökull glacier.

Day 6 : Vestrahorn and Stokksnes bay

After the last sunrise in the idyllic bay of Jökulsárlón, we now drive to the easternmost point of our journey, to the lively small town of Höfn on the edge of the East Fjords. Höfn lies at the foot of Vatnajökull next to a harbour which once gave the idyllic place its importance as a fishing village. Late afternoon and sunset are spent in the bay of Stokksnes in front of the mighty mountain Vestrahorn, which is considered another absolute top address and one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland. Vestrahorn is one of the numerous rocky peaks of the extinct volcano Klifatindur on the Stokksnes headland, which protrudes particularly strikingly from the mountain massif. There are great motives in this dreamlike scenery – especially in winter when the Vestrahorn rises majestically from the pitch-black dune plain. The headland itself is littered with small and large sand dunes, which together with the pitch-black sand and withered blades of grass form an intense contrast to the snow-covered mountain slopes. We will explore the most beautiful views around the bay of Skokksnes, playing with reflections in front of the panorama of the 756 meters high Vestrahorn, which is reflected in the calm sea water. If conditions are favourable we will return here at night to capture the northern lights.

Day 7 : RETURN TO REYKJAVÍK

Unfortunately, our photo tour is already coming to an end – so this morning we have to make our way back towards Reykjavík.  Along our route we will take photos at lesser-known, epic locations close to our route and maybe we’ll have another chance to see dancing Northern Lights – in a wonderful place – far away from the annoying artificial lights of the city, before we finish the last one Spend the night in our comfortable hotel near Keflavik Airport.  At the end of our photo tour, we enjoy Iceland over dinner and review our photographic experiences.

TESTIMONIALS

photo tours of iceland

I would definitely recommend Pall to my friends who like photography and want to see all the aspects about the stunning nature of Iceland! Thanks Pall for organizing us such a wonderful trip!

photo tours of iceland

Pall knew the best spots to shoot that perfect photo and the perfect time of day so he planned our trip around the limited daylight hours. One of the positive features of a private tour is that we never felt rushed and the whole 3 days was a very pleasant at your own pace journey. Pall made sure we were comfortable and safe at all times and we do appreciate that very much.

The icing on the cake is that Páll is also a great, very well known photographer and I am a photographer and a blogger, writing about my travels around the world. Not only I had a great trip, but I also learned a lot thanks to him! Should we go back to Iceland, we won't hesitate contacting Páll Jökull Pétursson again, and we definitely recommend his impeccable service to everyone.

Attractions

Seljalandsfoss

Daily itinerary

Black sands, white snow and golden sunset at Reynisfjara black sand beach.

Day 1 - South Coast to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon

On your first morning, you will be picked up from Reykjavík and taken to the South Coast. The drive towards your accommodation on the other side of the island will take approximately 5 hours but throughout the journey, you will make plenty of stops where you will have the opportunity to practice your landscape photography. Your first stop will be at Seljalandsfoss, an amazing waterfall that tumbles forth from a 60-metre tall cliff. Then it is off to Skógafoss waterfall, where you’ll be able to walk right up to the wall of water for stunning compositions. This waterfall is wider and more powerful than Seljalandsfoss but it is hard to decide which one is more beautiful. You’ll then continue along the coastline towards the small fishing village of Vík. En route, you’ll photograph the windswept Dyrhólaey cliffs, where a volcanic rock arch rises from the tumultuous waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Here, you’ll have the chance to admire the famous Reynisdrangar sea stacks, standing steadfast in the ocean which comes crashing onto the black sands of Reynisfjara beach. The scene makes for a hauntingly beautiful composition, no matter the weather conditions. You will then continue on your journey along the South Coast until you reach the Vatnajökull National Park in the evening. If the conditions are favourable, then there may be the chance to photograph the Northern Lights, dancing over the glistening icebergs as they float on the still waters of the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. You’ll spend the night at accommodation nearby.

Spectacular colours inside and ice cave in Vatnajökull National Park.

Day 2 - Ice Caves in Vatnajokull National Park

The itinerary on days 2 and 3 will remain flexible due to the unpredictable nature of the weather in Iceland. Our guides will continually monitor the conditions to ensure that you will be in the right places at all the right times to capture the beauty of the landscpes. Among some of the highlights will be a sunrise shoot at one of Iceland’s most iconic and beloved sites, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The sky-blue water is filled with icebergs that have broken off from a nearby glacier and now drift slowly through a small inlet towards the ocean. Next to the lagoon is a stretch of coastline that has been nicknamed the Diamond Beach. Here, icebergs from the lagoon wash up onto the black sandy shores where they resemble glistening jewels in the low sunlight. The scene makes for fantastic long exposure photography. Another highlight will surely be when you enter an ice cave. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the natural shapes that make up the ice cave as you make the most of the light bouncing off the crystal blue walls. Depending on the conditions, your photo guides may take you off the beaten track, to the lesser known Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon on the southern end of the Vatnajökull glacier. This majestic lagoon is filled with icebergs, just like its larger neighbour Jökulsárlón, though much more tranquil. If the Northern Lights make an appearance in the evening, then you will be in the right place at the right moment to capture them reflected upon the glassy surface of the lagoon. You will shoot the Northern Lights until it is finally time to return to your accommodation for the night.

Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon is a great place for long exposure photography.

Day 3 - Vatnajokull National Park In Depth

On this day, you will have the opportunity to further hone your long exposure photography skills at the Diamond Ice Beach and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, before heading into the Vatnajökull National Park to photograph other areas – weather and time permitting. Your trusty guides will review the conditions and take you to the best places to shoot as you slowly make your way towards the fishing village of Vík. Some of the options for the day include the wild and wonderful Skaftafell Nature Reserve, a rugged region known for its awe-inspiring panoramic view, home to the breathtaking Svínafellsjökull glacier. You could also visit the mighty Vestrahorn mountain with its undulating landscape cloaked in the delicate colours of winter or the massive ancient canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur that was created by glacial melt millions of years ago. Eventually, you’ll arrive in Vík, where you will spend the evening hunting for the Northern Lights before retiring to your accommodation for the night.

Timing is crucial when photographing the geyser Strokkur on the Golden Circle route.

Day 4 - Golden Circle

This will be your final day of shooting and you will make the most out of every single second! The day will begin with a sunrise shoot at the haunting Reynisfjara black sand beach, where the black basalt columnar cliffs contrast with the violent waves of the North Atlantic Ocean as they crash around the Reynisdrangar sea-stacks. On your return journey to Reykjavík, you will make your way through Iceland’s famous Golden Circle to photograph the volcanic landscapes and geothermal features that give this country the nickname of the “Land of Fire and Ice”. It is made up of three iconic sites: Þingvellir, Gullfoss and Geysir. At Þingvellir, you will be able to see the continental drift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, as well as photograph the impressive cracks and faults that traverse the region. Here, you will also find a small but charming waterfall named Öxarárfoss, which makes for a strikingly beautiful scene in winter when the majestic cliffs that surround it are swathed in ice and snow. Next, you will visit the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall that can be photographed from various points of view. It produces a massive amount of spray that encapsulates its thundering power as it flows over cliffs of ice, plunging into the snowy canyon below. Your final stop will be at Geysir, where the earth seethes with geothermal activity. Your photography skills will be tested by the exploding fountain geyser, Strokkur, as it spouts hot water into the air up to 20 metres high! Finally, you will reach Reykjavík, no doubt with a plethora of new landscape photography skills, amazing friends to keep in touch with, and a landscape photography portfolio of Iceland in winter that you can be proud of.

Siggi the Viking

Siggi the Viking

Siggi was born in Iceland and has spent most of his photography career in this paradise.During his time as a photographer, he early on found that his passion lies with photographing the beautiful landscapes and nightscapes of Iceland. One of his favorite activities is being out, chasing the northern lights and thinking of new ways to top his shots.

He has won multiple awards for his work, both locally and internationally, especially for his photos of the Aurora Borealis. Sigurdur has also written a book on the subject to aid everyone in getting the perfect shots of Lady Aurora and held nightscape photography workshops in Iceland since the beginning of 2012 with great success.

When the days get longer and the northern lights fade into the daylight, he turns his eyes towards the sun and the amazing midnight sun that Iceland has to offer with the golden hours that seem to stretch on forever.
