Nickelodeon Cruises for Families

As of 2019, Nickelodeon cruises are not offered. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) used to be the official partner of Nickelodeon, offering Nickelodeon cruise experiences with Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob Squarepants and more. However, the partnership ended in 2015.

If you’re looking for character meet-and-greets and other themed experiences for your next family vacation, check out these fantastic Nickelodeon cruise alternatives—including two all-inclusive Nickelodeon resorts.

Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts Punta Cana

If you’re willing to go the all-inclusive resort route, consider the Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts Punta Cana , which offers a water park with dump buckets that pour out green slime (!), character meet-and-greet experiences, a Spongebob Squarepants-themed suite inside of a pineapple (of course), and more! In 2020, the Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts Riviera Maya will debut, giving families another option for Nickelodeon-themed vacation fun.

MSC Cruises

A European-based cruise line, MSC’s partnership with LEGO means families can find LEGO-themed playrooms and activities on select MSC ships. Bonus: Kids cruise free on MSC !

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line offers a unique opportunity to visit with your favorite characters (minus the crowds of a theme park). Deck parties and awesome waterslides add to the fun, but Disney’s kids’ clubs — which include a life-like version of Andy’s Toy Room ( Toy Story ) — are what make Disney Cruise Line stand out among the rest. Your superhero-obsessed kids (and spouse) will also love Star Wars and Marvel Days at Sea.

Carnival Cruise Line

Parades, story time, character meet-and-greets and even a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast are part of Seuss at Sea on Carnival Cruise Line .

Nickelodeon Family Cruise Trips Launch in Los Angeles

Posted By: LesliPeterson

Next summer is going to offer something great for families; two new Nickelodeon cruise vacations on massive, classy, 4-star Royal Caribbean cruise ships. My children love Nickelodeon, and when I let them watch TV (who am I kidding, this means almost every evening), they usually choose to watch kiddie fare like iCarly, Drake and Josh, and Spongebob Squarepants. A Nickelodeon cruise trip sounds like a perfect way to spend a family vacation at sea.

Mariner of the Seas, Voyager Class Cruise Ship

Mariner of the Seas, Voyager Class Cruise Ship

We have never been on a cruise before, unless kayaking around the Long Island Sound counts (it doesn’t) .  So when Nickelodeon and Royal Caribbean offered a 2-day, one-night mini-vacation, it seemed like an offer we couldn’t refuse.

It’s an easy drive from West LA to the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, and when we pulled into the parking lot, my daughters asked if the massively huge ship we saw docked was ours. No way, I answered, that’s too big a boat.

Turns out I was wrong! The Mariner of the Sea is a Voyager class ship, over 1,000 feet long with 15 passenger decks and a capacity of 3,835 guests and over a thousand crew. Wow. It’s the size of a town!

When it’s not hosting a Nick Cruise, the Mariner of the Seas still has a child-friendly deck with rock-climbing, mini golf, 3 pools, a basketball court, a video arcade and many more fun activities.

My kids were shocked speechless – and I though they were going to pass out when they realized that all-inclusive meant they could have all the food they wanted. We all overindulged.

Kids Meet Spongebob on a Nick Cruise

Kids Meet Spongebob on a Nick Cruise

But the highlight was beyond a doubt the Nickelodeon portion of the cruise. My kids met “Spongebob,” but it was two of the stars of the Nick show iCarly that got them really excited. Jennette McCurdy, who plays Sam on iCarly, was friendly and sociable.

My 9-year old was a little shy, but when Jennette learned that they are both brown belts in karate. She and my daughter had a conversation about the different schools of the martial arts (Jennette McCurdy is a brown belt in Uechi Ryu, and my kid’s a brown belt in Yoshukai karate).

My younger daughter had a long talk with another actor on iCarly, Nathan Kress . What a good sport he was, answering a 7-year old’s questions! (Example: “How do you like having adoring fans?” This, said adoringly.)

Both Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress hung with the group for a couple hours, touring the Mariner of the Seas , trying rock climbing and basketball, and generally being terrific guests.

iCarly Stars Play Mini-Golf

iCarly Stars Play Mini-Golf

After Nathan Kress and Jennette McCurdy left – they’re teens, they have to go to school sometime – the Mariner of the Seas was no longer a Nickelodeon cruise, but more of an adult overnight vacation.

I didn’t see any other children on the ship. My kids had to do a little of everything, so we went on the rock climbing wall, had some (more) to eat, saw an ice show at the ice skating rink, laughed a lot, and acted silly.

We had a wonderful time, and it ended too soon: I had to keep them in our room after dinner, as the other 2,000 or so cruise ship travelers were getting pretty drunk.

That all-inclusive includes drinks! Some people so inebriated, they clearly were past the point of having fun. I thought it would be best to shield my kids from all that.

Suffice it to say, a regular, week-long Nick cruise will not be filled with totally drunk adults. It surely will be full of families with children and young teens, and oriented towards a youthful Nickelodeon-themed vacation.

The Mariner of the Seas, as partnered with Nickelodeon, will leave the Port of Los Angeles on July 26, and round-trip travel to the Mexican Riviera. Another cruise on the Freedom of the Seas leaves Florida for the Eastern Caribbean on August 9.

For children and young teens that enjoy Nick televisions shows – and c’mon, who hasn’t watched Spongebob? – these cruises sound like a terrific way to spend a summer family vacation together.

Right before we disembarked the next morning I asked my kids what they thought of their first cruise travel experience. Did they like it? Their answers speak for themselves.

Pin for later!

Is There A Nickelodeon Cruise?! (Best Family Cruises!)

Remember the amazing character meet-and-greets, live shows, and slime parties offered on Nickelodeon cruises?

These Nickelodeon-themed experiences were incredibly popular among families with small kids.

From the interactive game show to the themed dining events, the entire cruise was an experience.

Unfortunately, the partnership between Norwegian Cruise Line and Nickelodeon ended in 2015, and there are currently no Nickelodeon-themed cruises being offered in 2023 or 2024.

So we only have our nostalgia and the fond memories.

But that doesn’t mean these cruises are gone forever…

Table of Contents

Is There A Nickelodeon Cruise?

Unfortunately, as of now, there isn’t a Nickelodeon cruise for you to embark on in 2023 or 2024. In the past, Nickelodeon partnered with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and even Royal Caribbean to bring families the ultimate themed cruise experience, featuring beloved characters like SpongeBob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer.

The Nickelodeon cruises were truly something special for families and kids alike. These cruises offered a range of unique on-board experiences, such as live performances, meet-and-greets with your favorite characters, and the iconic green slime that often made an appearance.

Although the partnership between Nickelodeon and NCL ended in 2015, there’s always a possibility that Nickelodeon might team up with a cruise line in the future.

This could mean a potential return of the popular family cruise that once made many unforgettable memories.

In the meantime, you can explore other family-friendly cruises that cater to all ages and interests. While they may not have the Nickelodeon theme, they still offer a variety of entertainment options, dining venues, and activities tailored to families with children.

Keep an eye out for any future announcements of a Nickelodeon cruise, but until then, don’t hesitate to explore the numerous other family cruise options that can still provide you and your loved ones with an unforgettable vacation at sea.

Spongebob : Nickelodeon Cruise

What Happened To Nickelodeon Cruises?

Nickelodeon cruises were once a popular family vacation choice, as they provided unique experiences with beloved characters such as Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants.

However, you might have noticed that they are no longer available. The story behind their disappearance involves the dynamics of the cruise industry and how partnerships evolve over time.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) used to be the official partner of Nickelodeon, and together they offered fun-filled cruises featuring activities, parades, and character interactions.

Families like yours would create lifelong memories while enjoying the company of their favorite Nickelodeon heroes.

Unfortunately, the NCL-Nickelodeon partnership came to an end in 2015, leading to the discontinuation of the Nickelodeon cruises.

As cruise lines continually strive to improve and adapt their onboard experiences, some offerings don’t stand the test of time.

While Nickelodeon cruises might have been popular, the market demands change, and cruise lines react accordingly.

The end of the Nickelodeon cruises was yet another result of this ever-changing industry.

Norwegian Cruise Line recognized an opportunity to change course and replaced the Nickelodeon cruises with other family-oriented activities.

Deciding on a new theme or brand replacement can be a challenge for a cruise company.

With the cessation of Nickelodeon-themed cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line has since opted to collaborate with DreamWorks, bringing new characters and experiences on board.

While the Nickelodeon cruises might no longer be available for you and your family, there are still plenty of other cruise options tailored to families and children.

So, even though the beloved characters of Nickelodeon may not be sailing the high seas anymore, rest assured that many memorable family vacations await you with different themes and activities.

Spongebob : Meet-and-Greet

Alternatives To Nickelodeon Cruises

If you’re looking for a family-friendly cruise experience similar to Nickelodeon cruises, there are other options you can explore.

Nickelodeon cruises were offered by Norwegian Cruise Line until 2015 when the partnership ended. But don’t worry! You still have amazing alternatives that will create lasting memories for you and your children.

Disney Cruise Line is an excellent option for a children’s themed cruise. Your kids will love meeting their favorite Disney characters onboard and enjoy fun-filled activities tailored for different age groups.

From magical live shows to themed dining experiences, you’ll find plenty of entertainment for the entire family on a Disney cruise.

Moreover, adults can indulge in their own relaxation with various amenities available, such as spas and lounges.

Another fantastic option is Royal Caribbean’s DreamWorks Experience . On selected ships, you can find delightful DreamWorks characters like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar’s King Julien.

The experience includes meet-and-greets with characters, themed activities, parades, and live shows. It’s an exciting alternative for young guests, making your family vacation truly memorable.

If your children are LEGO lovers, you might consider MSC Cruises . These ships offer an impressive LEGO-themed kids’ club with different areas catering to various age groups.

From building workshops to competitions, your kids will be entertained while you enjoy some well-deserved relaxation time. Plus, MSC is known for their Mediterranean flair, providing a unique experience for the whole family.

These alternatives to Nickelodeon cruises promise a great mix of fun, entertainment, and relaxation for families and kids of all ages.

Nickelodeon Norwegian Cruise Experience

Norwegian Epic

During the partnership between Norwegian Cruise Line and Nickelodeon, you would have had a one-of-a-kind family vacation experience.

It was a special opportunity for young guests to enjoy unforgettable moments with their favorite TV characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, and more.

Imagine getting to sail along with SpongeBob and his friends. You’d find them roaming the ship and you could take photos with them to keep as cherished memories from your trip.

These friendly faces would have greeted you on your voyage, making it an enjoyable journey for the whole family.

In addition to the exciting character interactions and encounters, the Nickelodeon Norwegian Cruise experience offered a variety of engaging shows and events tailored for the younger audience.

You would have enjoyed watching your kids laugh and clap during live performances featuring Dora the Explorer and other beloved characters.

What made the Nickelodeon cruise even more exciting was the special themed water parks available onboard.

Picture your children splashing around with their favorite heroes in a SpongeBob-inspired water play area!

These parks allowed young cruisers to soak up the fun and enjoy themselves while combining their love for Nickelodeon with the thrill of water activities.

But, alas, it’s important to mention that as of 2019, Nickelodeon cruises are no longer offered. The partnership between Norwegian Cruise Line and Nickelodeon had ended in 2015.

That said, you should explore other options for family-friendly cruises that provide entertainment and enjoyment for your little ones.

Nonetheless, the Nickelodeon Norwegian Cruise experience remains a nostalgic and cherished memory for many families who had the chance to sail with their favorite characters.

Nickelodeon Family Cruise with Royal Caribbean

  • May 8, 2008

Nickelodeon has assembled seven days of non-stop fun and activities for its first-ever Nickelodeon Family Cruise with Royal Caribbean, which sets sail August 10-17, on Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas.  Vacationers will be able to participate in a variety of activities, including: a kick-off sail away party; evening shows, a Nick Live Poolside! interactive game show; special screenings of The Naked Brothers Band and SpongeBob SquarePants; Nick Karaoke; and character meet-and-greets with Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob, among others.  Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to attend autograph signings and meet-and-greets with Nick celebrities including SpongeBob SquarePant’s Tom Kenny and iCarly stars Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress.

“It’s only natural that SpongeBob would headline this cruise since he’s most at home at sea,” said Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants.  “What better place for SpongeBob to meet his fans than cruising the beautiful blue ocean waters. He’ll feel right at home!”

Families setting sail on the Nickelodeon Family Cruise by Royal Caribbean will kick off their experience with an evening of live music and dancing at the sail away party, followed by the evening “big show” with live performances and an aerial act that will have kids on the edge of their seats.

The Nickelodeon cruise will offer family-friendly amenities and a packed schedule of fun-filled branded activities like:

Nickelodeon character breakfasts: Families can start off their day with a hearty breakfast and a special visit with their favorite Nick characters like: SpongeBob SquarePants; Dora the Explorer; The Backyardigans; Jimmy Neutron; and Diego.

Slime Time Live!: Both kids and parents can experience Nickelodeon’s trademark green slime at Studio Nick during this interactive game show, with the ultimate goal of getting slimed.

Nick screenings: Each day families can catch a special screening of kids’ favorite Nickelodeon shows like: SpongeBob SquarePants; The Fairly OddParents; The Naked Brothers Band; and more.

Nick Live Poolside!: At the pool each day there will be a Nick-themed interactive game show providing family enjoyment in the sun.

Let’s Just Play Family Beach Day: On the sixth day of the cruise, families will have the option to disembark on the private island of Labadee where they can enjoy a day on the shore as part of Nick’s Let’s Just Play Family Beach Day, featuring freestyle beach games with a Nickelodeon twist.

Throughout the week, cruisers will have the opportunity to interact with Nickelodeon personalities.  Kenny will host a screening of a brand new SpongeBob SquarePants episode as well as a voiceover workshop to teach kids how to sound just like their favorite porous pal: SpongeBob.  McCurdy and Kress will host a special screening of a never-before-seen episode of iCarly and will serve as judges for an iCarly-themed Nick Karaoke contest.

The Nickelodeon Family Cruise on Freedom of the Seas also includes a full range of onboard activities and amenities appealing to adults and children of all ages. During the day, guests can rejuvenate with a session in the Freedom Day Spa and state-of-the-art fitness center, and relax in the cantilevered whirlpools in the adults-only Solarium. In the evenings, guests can enjoy live music and entertainment in several bars and lounges, a Broadway-style performance in the Arcadia Theater, or try their luck in the Casino Royale. In addition, Freedom of the Seas provides its award-winning Adventure Ocean kids programming to entertain toddlers to teens while parents enjoy the on-board activities.

Vacationers on the Nickelodeon Family Cruise by Royal Caribbean will visit four tropical Western Caribbean destinations including: Cozumel; Mexico; George Town; Grand Cayman; Ocho Rios; Jamaica; and a special stop at Royal Caribbean’s private beach destination, Labadee.  Vacation packages for the cruise are currently on-sale.  Visit www.nickfamilycruise.com for more information.

Enjoy a Nickelodeon Cruise With Your Family

By Space Coast Daily  //  January 5, 2022

nick family cruise

If you’re looking for a fun and memorable vacation with your family, a Nickelodeon Cruise is a perfect choice. These ships leave from Cozumel, Mexico and St. Maarten, and offer cabins decorated with bright colors and entertainment options designed to keep kids entertained for hours.

There are also special games and events hosted by the Nickelodeon Crew, which you’ll love. Whether you’re traveling with kids or parents, there’s something for everyone on the ship.

A Nickelodeon cruise is designed with families in mind, so you can expect to see lots of shows geared toward children. Activities on the ship include games and character breakfasts. During the week, guests can participate in a variety of themed events, including live Nickelodeon-themed games and contests. The kids will be thrilled to participate in activities, such as the karaoke contest and slime time live!

You can also plan to board the ship a day or two before the trip, as there may be changes to the schedule. Arrive a day or so before the departure date to avoid last-minute rushes. If you’re flying in, check the cruise message boards for updates on the schedule. You can always contact the travel agency or make an appointment for a pre-cruise talk or a family reunion.

A Nickelodeon Cruise will give you a chance to see your favorite cartoon characters. The ship’s pool deck will host Nick Live, where contests and challenges will keep the kids busy. There will be Dora sing-alongs and Bikini Bashes, and you can also attend a voiceover workshop to learn how to sound like SpongeBob. During the day, McCurdy and Kress will host special episodes of iCarly, and they will serve as judges for the Nick Karaoke competition.

The Nickelodeon Family Cruise by Royal Caribbean also includes Nick Live on the pool deck. The kids can watch the latest episodes of their favorite shows and participate in a scavenger hunt.

In addition to the shows and events, there are also special activities and entertainment. During the weeklong festivities, the children will enjoy the “big show” every night, which features live performances and a special iCarly episode. The kids will also be able to participate in a fun karaoke competition.

The 2009 Nickelodeon Family Cruises will depart from both the east and west coasts. The Mariner of the Seas will sail to exotic Mexican Rivera, while the Freedom of the Seas will visit the Virgin Islands and CocoCay. In addition, the iCarly cruise will have its own Nick Live stage. The entertainment will be high-quality, with many unique appearances. Throughout the week, the crew will be at the pool deck, as well as on board.

Among the fun activities on a Nickelodeon Cruise are the themed activities for kids. The entertainment will feature the newest episode of the popular cartoon on the ship and the best episodes of the hit series.

During the week, they’ll also have the opportunity to participate in various contests and challenges. In addition to the onboard shows, kids can also enjoy karaoke nights and special episodes. There are even scavenger hunts organized by the Nickelodeon channel.

During the Nickelodeon Week, the cruise line will host a variety of activities for children. There will be a special screening of the SpongeBob SquarePants series with Kenny and Cress.

A special iCarly episode will also be shown. A Nick Karaoke contest will be held for kids to showcase their skills in singing. The cruise will end with a special celebration.

A Nickelodeon cruise is a fun and exciting vacation for children. There are activities for children to enjoy such as slime, special viewings of Nickelodeon TV shows, and a breakfast with the characters of the kids’ favorite shows. Taking your kids on a Nickelodeon Cruise will be an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

However, you need to be sure you can take care of yourself while on the trip. You’ll need extra clothing and motion sickness medication, as well as the appropriate motion sickness medications.

For an exciting morning, make sure you plan ahead. You can always catch an action-packed Nick Live episode on the pool deck. At the pool deck, the Nickelodeon team will host karaoke competitions and game shows for kids, as well as other activities that keep children entertained. The kids will also love the activities organized for adults. If you want to make the most of your cruise, make sure to book early.

Are There Any Nickelodeon Cruises in 2023?

nicolodean cruises

When it comes to iconic entertainment brands for children, Nickelodeon stands out as a trailblazer. From memorable shows like “ SpongeBob SquarePants ” to “ Dora the Explorer ,” Nickelodeon has been a household name for generations.

But did you know that this powerhouse also dipped its toes into the cruise industry? That’s right, Nickelodeon Cruises were a real thing – a sea-bound extravaganza where you could hang out with SpongeBob or share pancakes with Dora.

Now, you might be wondering, ‘Are these cruises still a thing?’ Well, let’s dive into the story of Nickelodeon Cruises. We’re about to unravel the tale of this fascinating journey – its highs, its lows, and everything in between.

How Did Nickelodeon Cruises Begin?

Back in 2010, a groundbreaking collaboration between Nickelodeon and Norwegian Cruise Line set the cruise industry abuzz. This venture promised not just a cruise but a full-fledged Nickelodeon experience at sea. For those of you who fondly remember the days of waking up to “Slime Time Live,” this was the cruise of your dreams.

The inaugural journey of this thrilling partnership paved the way for the Norwegian Breakaway , which was the latest addition to Norwegian’s fleet at that point. This venture was so successful that it soon expanded across multiple NCL ships including the Norwegian Epic , Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jewel , and Norwegian Getaway .

The Norwegian Getaway , another newest ship in the fleet during its time, made headlines in 2014 when it added even more Nickelodeon experiences to its offerings. From shows starring Nickelodeon celebrities to engaging with characters from popular shows like iCarly and True Jackson VP, the Getaway was the fifth ship to make waves with Nickelodeon’s unique brand of entertainment.

Did you ever wish you could attend a character meet and greet with the cast of your favorite Nickelodeon shows? This was a reality on the Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Epic during their special all-access cruises, which offered non-stop daily activities featuring all of Nickelodeon’s popular characters.

Is the Nickelodeon-Themed Cruise Currently Operational?

Unfortunately, these themed voyages have been docked indefinitely as of 2015 . What led to the discontinuation of these incredibly popular trips? Let’s explore this in the next section.

What Happened to Nickelodeon Cruises?

For Nickelodeon lovers, these cruises were more than just a vacation; they were the epitome of childhood dreams come true. But as with all good things, this chapter in cruise line history had to end. The official collaboration between Nickelodeon’s parent company, Viacom, and Norwegian Cruise Line ceased operations after a successful 5-year run. Though the cruise line did experience a 20% increase in guest satisfaction, particularly concerning its youth programming, the deal was not renewed , and Nickelodeon’s unforgettable splash of color soon faded from Norwegian’s ships.

During their time, these cruises offered families a range of exciting activities, including character meet and greets and the famed Slime Time Live , a crowd-pleaser where passengers could get slimed during interactive, high-paced games. Even Pajama Jam Breakfasts were part of the package, adding a special touch to morning dining experiences.

While the reason for the discontinuation has never been publicly disclosed, the end of the cruise line was not due to a lack of interest or customer dissatisfaction . On the contrary, passengers were enamored with the special features, from Dancing with Dora to the numerous Nickelodeon-themed experiences that kept kids and adults alike entertained throughout the voyage.

What we do know is that around the same time as the end of the cruise line, Nickelodeon announced a new partnership with Karisma Hotel and Resorts . This new venture aimed to create modern resorts in the Caribbean, including an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana. It appears that Nickelodeon was eager to sail in a different direction, shifting its focus from the high seas to terra firma.

Comparing Nickelodeon Cruises to Other Themed Cruises

Mickey and Minnie Mouse mascots posing infront of a ship

When it comes to themed cruises, Nickelodeon Cruises had a particular charm that attracted families in droves. Compared to its closest rival, Disney Cruise Line , Nickelodeon offered a unique blend of its TV show characters, such as SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer. Disney Cruises , with prices often starting around $700 per person, brings to life its classic characters like Mickey Mouse and Disney Princesses but can be more expensive than the Nickelodeon Cruises which generally starts at a lower price point, around $500 per person.

Carnival Cruise Line also offers themed cruises like Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.” Carnival’s rates are often cheaper, starting at around $400 per person, but their character interactions are not as frequent as Nickelodeon’s.

Royal Caribbean Cruises is another competitor, offering DreamWorks-themed cruises featuring characters from “Kung Fu Panda” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” Prices vary but can start around $600 per person. However, they don’t offer the same level of interactive game shows and character meet and greets that made Nickelodeon Cruises special.

While each cruise line has its perks, Nickelodeon Cruises excelled in creating a non-stop, immersive world, where the line between TV shows and reality is delightfully blurred.

Does Norwegian Cruise Line Continue to Provide Children’s Activities Onboard?

Absolutely, Norwegian Cruise Line hasn’t slowed down in offering a variety of children’s activities onboard, even though the Nickelodeon cruises have ended. Nowadays, Norwegian offers a variety of youth programs designed for various age brackets, guaranteeing an enjoyable vacation for both young children and teenagers.

From splash parks to interactive games and scavenger hunts, Norwegian keeps the excitement levels high. And it’s not just confined to the Norwegian Getaway or the Norwegian Epic ; the entire fleet is designed to entertain the younger crowd.

They’ve even introduced specialized activities in collaboration with other brands, such as circus workshops  and escape rooms . So while the Nickelodeon-themed experiences are no longer available, the cruise line continues to focus on family-friendly fun.

Alternative Options to Nickelodeon Cruises

Missing the Nickelodeon-themed cruises? Don’t fret; there are still numerous ways to satisfy your craving for Nick entertainment and relish family-friendly vacations at other destinations. These alternatives not only offer a rich experience but also bring a diverse range of themes and characters that can appeal to every member of the family.

Nickelodeon Hotel and Resorts

With luxury resorts in Punta Cana and Riviera Maya, these locations offer more than just beachfront views. Character meet and greets, lavish water parks, and the Club Nick Kids Club provide a haven for families. Adults aren’t overlooked either; they can relax at the spa while their kids are kept entertained.

Nickelodeon Theme Parks

Kids showered in slime in a theme park

Various locations, such as Universal Studios Florida and Nickelodeon Universe in Minnesota and New Jersey, offer immersive Nickelodeon experiences. For those in the UK, there’s Nickelodeon Land at Blackpool Pleasure Beach featuring unique rides and character appearances.

Peppa Pig on Costa Cruises

For those whose homes resonate with Peppa Pig’s laughter, Costa Cruises offers a delightful Peppa Pig-themed experience. The highlight is an on-deck swimming pool modeled after Grandpa Pig’s boat. The cruise also includes engaging activities like coloring, puzzles, and treasure hunts. The nighttime disco transforms into Peppa’s Pirate Party, making for an unforgettable experience for little fans.

Royal Caribbean

One of the most well-known names in cruising, the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line , also packs a punch when it comes to family-friendly activities. The Adventure Ocean Youth Program offers targeted fun for kids aged 3-17. Among the attractions is Splashaway Bay, a water park with water slides, fountains, and pool activities.

Their Aquanauts program melds education with excitement, offering special fun experiments, adventure science, and storytime for kids aged 3-5. Teenagers aren’t left out; the Fuel Teen Club allows them to groove to DJ music, and unique game courts are designed for them to compete and connect.

Disney Cruise Line

If it’s character-themed cruises you’re after, Disney provides a magical sea voyage featuring characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Live shows and themed parties make it a close competitor to the former Nickelodeon Cruises.

Seuss at Sea on Carnival Cruises

The Carnival Cruise Line takes you to the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss. A unique breakfast event called the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast features zany table settings and a fun menu. Families can also partake in a character parade, interactive storytelling, and colorful arts and crafts activities, making for a Seussical journey on the high seas.

P&O Cruises with Aardman Animation

Elevating family entertainment on the high seas, P&O Cruises has partnered with Aardman Animation. Kids are welcomed onboard with dance sessions featuring Wallace and Gromit. Creative souls can tap into their artistic flair during clay workshops, creating their Aardman characters.

Special storytelling sessions and themed arts and crafts activities like making Gromit ears and character masks add extra charm to this cruising experience.

Other Cruise Ships That Don’t Exist Anymore

Over the years, the cruising industry has seen numerous partnerships come and go. Carnival Cruise Line once enhanced the onboard experience with small amenity baskets featuring sample-sized toiletries in bathroom cabins, a luxury phased out in the early 2010s. Hasbro teamed up with Carnival to introduce “ Hasbro, the Game Show ,” a short-lived but captivating onboard entertainment feature. Celebrity Cruises had a wellness-focused collaboration with Canyon Ranch SpaClub, which ended after five years.

Cunard Line broke new ground with a restaurant by celebrity chef Todd English, which was eventually replaced. Holland America Line had culinary ventures with America’s Test Kitchen and even teamed up with Oprah Winfrey for themed voyages. MSC Cruises once staged Cirque du Soleil performances and had an Eataly-branded restaurant lineup. Norwegian Cruise Line once featured ‘Kinky Boots ,’ ‘Legally Blonde,’ and ‘ Rock of Ages’ as part of its onboard entertainment. They even had Nickelodeon characters meet and greet with kids.

From Princess Cruises’ partnership with chocolatier Norman Love to Seabourn Cruise Line’s decade-long collaboration with Charlie Palmer , such arrangements have added a dash of extra allure to sea voyages but were eventually discontinued. These past ventures showcase the cruise industry’s continuous evolution in pursuit of delivering unforgettable experiences to passengers.

In conclusion, the cruise industry has seen a multitude of innovative partnerships over the years, ranging from collaborations with toy companies like Hasbro to luxurious spa experiences with Canyon Ranch. These alliances have not only elevated the cruising experience but have also defined distinct eras for cruise-goers.

One such defining partnership was between Norwegian Cruise Line and Nickelodeon, which transformed family cruises into immersive experiences featuring beloved characters and activities. Though many of these partnerships have been phased out, their impact lives on, leaving an indelible imprint on the cruise industry and the memories of travelers.

Come aboard: My Nickelodeon cruise

Blue, from the Nickelodeon show 'Blue’s Clues', and Carrie’s son Tyler aboard Royal Caribbean’s Nickelodeon themed cruise.

My 6-year-old's eyes widened in near disbelief at the news. His favorite talking yellow Porifera, SpongeBob SquarePants, had plans to emerge from his pineapple under the sea and host the first-ever Nickelodeon cruise for kids. What's more, the voyage would take place aboard the biggest ship in the world, Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas ... and Tyler was going to go. Then came the icing on his sponge cake: Little sister Tess would be staying home with Dad and it would just be the two of us. He was about as excited as I've ever seen him, sharing every detail of the cruise with unbridled enthusiasm to friends and neighbors, and as the day grew nearer, eagerly crossing off the days on a hand-made calendar he charted out just for the occasion.

And me? As an active and involved mom with two young kids, I'm as tolerant of goofy antics and in-your-face commercialism as the next parent, but could I really handle an entire week of Dora sing-alongs, endless character shows and fluorescent slime? Images of a thousand misbehaving little urchins threatened to cloud my excitement: tots packing water guns and ducking into corners, armies of bored and brooding pre-teens rolling their eyes at me over the dinner table night after night. A thousand of them? Maybe more? All on one ship?

Relax, I love kids. And I'm also a closet "Backyardigans" fan. Surely, I could handle it. But would I enjoy it?

Preparing for the slime-fest Ty's first order of business, after bouncing off the walls for an hour or so after learning of the trip, was obvious: Google everything related to the ship, the agenda and our ports of call —Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Labadee ( Royal Caribbean's private island) and Jamaica. Together we uncovered a bevy of handy information. We viewed and printed the deck plans for the Freedom of the Seas, and dug up every picture of the ship we could get our hands on, so that we knew it like the back of our hands before we ever treaded onboard. Why waste time getting lost for the first two days? We found the ingredients for the coveted slime, and made an ill-fated and messy attempt at reproducing it. We even researched our ports of call. Did you know that the Cayman Islands were named after a marine crocodile (otherwise known as a turtle) which was found there, and that they were accidentally discovered after Columbus' final voyage to the new world veered off track? Or that Ocho Rios is really a misnomer, as it is home only to the famous Dunn's River chorreos, or rapids — not "eight rivers," from which the name is mistakenly derived? Heck, I didn't. It was a fun and educational experience for us both.

Getting gone Aside from arriving at the Atlantic City airport at the ungodly hour of 4:30 a.m. on departure day, our travel to Miami proved miraculously painless. Flights and transfers cooperated with us; and even though I hate the darn thing, we packed the Nintendo DS for times when we were forced to wait. Upon arrival at Port of Miami, things went just as well. Despite the massive volume of passengers ( Freedom of the Seas holds 3,634 passengers and the cruise was sold out), and mind-boggling number of children, strollers and all the fixin's in tow, the embarkation process went surprisingly smoothly. We arrived to the terminal around 10:30 a.m. and while we were told embarkation would begin at 1 p.m., they managed to get us moving well before that. We stepped onto the ship around noon. Everyone was in good spirits, despite a few stray showers, as a genuinely excited Nickelodeon staff had entertained the kids in the terminal with games and chit-chat, getting everyone psyched for the trip. Just before boarding, we noticed some last-minute scrambling to get things finished, as the giant Nickelodeon slime decal was being adhered to the side of the ship while we looked on. If stepping aboard the Freedom makes a grown-up feel tiny, imagine what it feels like to a 6-year-old.

"Did this use to be an aircraft carrier?" Tyler asked, in all sincerity.

No, but it cost about as much to build.

Talking 'bout freedom Few would argue that Royal Caribbean's Freedom-class ships are some of the most family-friendly vessels afloat. And so, Nickelodeon made a wise choice coming aboard here. After boarding and grabbing a quick snack from the Cafe Promenade, a quaint coffeehouse with snacks, pastries, and sandwiches, we gave ourselves a quick "highlights tour." We first shot up to Deck 11, as Ty was visibly bursting to see the pool area and famous H2O Zone he had heard so much about. With a colorful array of soakers, sprayers and geysers, along with a lazy river and kids' pool, this area was a big hit with his age group. In fact, my son would have spent all day there if I let him. However, had I brought my youngest child, I might have been a tad disappointed. Children who are not potty-trained are not allowed anywhere in the H2O zone, not even with swimmy diapers, save for a tiny square wading pool to the side. And throughout most of the cruise they were monitoring this pretty closely. This upset some of the parents who were not aware of this fact beforehand, as the zero-depth entry spray area is otherwise ideal for these youngest cruisers.

We also checked out the much-anticipated Deck 13, where we stopped to stand in awe of the enormous 43-foot rock wall, and took in a quick round of mini-golf, which we found to be surprisingly uncrowded then — and for most of the cruise. Then, the big Kahuna: We went to check out the FlowRider, which is a 40-ft long wave-simulator that allows you to test your skills at boogie boarding or surfing. Picture 30,000 gallons of water flying at your body while you try to remain upright, either on your belly, or even less likely, on your feet. It was a shame, but Ty missed out on that experience, as he didn't reach the 52-inch requirement for the boogie board or the 58-inch requirement for surfing. Still, several times during the trip we sat on the bleachers adjacent to this ingenious contraption, and watched the hilarious antics of many of our fellow passengers — from young kids to grandparents — as they attempted to ride the wave. We also paused to check out the arcade, where my son was delighted to see they had all of his favorite games from the boardwalk near our New Jersey home. His mother, however, was less-delighted to see that they cost about 10 times the price. Well, nearly. The ones he was interested in were close to $2 a pop, and when I realized that we'd have to walk through this arcade repeatedly to get to the Adventure Ocean Explorer's room, I put the kibosh on that right away. Another must-see was the ice rink in Studio B. Tyler was all fired up when he saw this awesome frozen playground, complete with mini-zambonis, which he quickly dubbed "the little cleaning robots."

Our stateroom was ready well before 1 p.m. and I was pleasantly surprised by how cheery and tasteful the balcony cabin was. It being a newish ship, the decor was very tasteful with pale tans, creams, peaches and teals, and felt larger than I had expected. Our queen bed, which we were very happy to see was not configured into two twins, was very comfortable, with deluxe bedding and large green throw pillows. While the pillows initially felt like a nice touch, they did become a tad cumbersome by the end of the trip, taking up coveted space on the couch when the bed was unmade. The couch and glass table in the sitting area were an indulgence, and provided the perfect spot to go through the day's purchases, as was the large balcony with its metal loungers and end table. There was more than ample storage in the pale oak-colored built-ins.

Let the wild rumpus start The sailaway party as we left Miami provided our first official introduction to the Nickelodeon entertainers, and it was a rip-roaring time, if unbelievably crowded. What appeared to be every family onboard gathered on Deck 11 for a show featuring songs, antics, games and the first sliming of the cruise. It was a big hit, and a harbinger of more great amusement to come.

Nickelodeon entertainment highlights I thought the folks at Nickelodeon did a terrific job with the entertainment, particularly given that it was their first-ever venture. Beloved Nick host Ruben emceed most of their events and, when not working the crowd onstage, could be seen mingling with the kids and posing for pictures. We spent one tender ride from Labadee, our final port of call, sitting next to him, and he's just as he appears on TV: charming and gregarious, and wonderful with children. The Slime Time Live shows were, as you might expect, the highlight of the cruise for many of the kids, including my own. We caught the show on day two of the cruise, before we had a chance to overhear any hints about what to expect.

Like most everyone onboard, especially those parents who grew up watching “You Can't Do That on Television” every afternoon like I did, I pretty much knew the deal. Families compete in a game show, in which they answer questions and compete in contests that require hapless participants to do ridiculous and hilarious things like don chicken costumes, jump through plastic hoops and sit in chairs that gyrate. Volunteers are brought in from the live audience to join in the antics; ultimately, somehow, some family wins. The loser family gets doused with fluorescent green slime, while seated in a plastic pool and everyone howls in approval. Any way you look at it, even if you've seen it before, it's just plain funny, whether you're 6 or 60. Still, many of the families onboard had visited the Nick Suites in Orlando, and were hoping they'd mix the show up a bit more for the cruise.

A huge hit with the 'tween crowd was a meet and greet with two of the stars from the Nickelodeon series "iCarly," Jeannette McCurdy and Nathan Kress. These kids are big stars, and the demand to see them was so great that not everyone got a chance to do so on the first go. To the credit of both actors and staff, they put together an impromptu second event later in the week to accommodate those who were unable to get into the first one. Another big night for this age group was the premiere of Nathan Kress' new movie, "Gym Teacher." He is a truly delightful and sweet kid, and many slightly older kids really seemed to enjoy the movie, but I think my son was a little young.

Another somewhat unexpectedly (from my perspective) great performance was by Tom Kenny, the voice behind SpongeBob. My son, tuckered from a long day three in Cozumel, wasn't eager to attend, but the show also promised a sneak peak of a never-before-seen episode of the show, which proved enough to get his weary body into a seat. He was positively glued to the screen during the short premiere. And when Tom Kenny came on afterwards to entertain the kids with his band (who knew he had a band?) it was much more fun than we both expected. He can't really sing of course, but he's SpongeBob, so who cares? At first my son didn't even believe this guy was the real voice, distracted by his appearance as, well, a person. So we played a game where we covered our eyes and listened, without looking at him. "It really IS HIM!" he finally declared. For about an hour after the show kids could be heard all over the ship humming his most catchy tune, "It's the Best Day Ever," which I found oddly touching.

Throughout the cruise, Nickelodeon hosted Nick Live on the pool deck with games, contests and challenges, as well as Bikini Bashes (named after Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob's hometown, and not because you are required to wear one, thankfully) and slimings. There were also, as suspected, Dora sing-alongs, as well as character breakfasts, Nickelodeon family improv and karaoke nights, series premieres, and one massive scavenger hunt, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed.

Highlights onboard With the exception of a few late-night events like the Love & Marriage game show and a comedy performance, the entertainment on Freedom of the Seas was not just kid-friendly, but also genuinely amusing for them. Our personal favorite was day five's Now You See It, which featured the magic of Drew Thomas and his lovely assistant in a dizzying array of dexterous feats. Kids were enthralled with everything from the old standby act of cutting the assistant in two, to the downright breathtaking: a grand finale of snow falling in the theater. Extraordinary. The Freedom-Ice show was also very enjoyable, a high-energy performance with a cast of extremely talented skaters, bright costumes and props that the kids loved. I'll be honest, I'm not really one for this kind of thing normally, but in this environment it was perfect. Guests can also use the ice rink during off hours to skate, which I was dying to do but never did find the time for. Skates are gratis.

Also memorable was day two's comedian Steve Shaffer, who entertained with some tame jokes, and performed with the crazy-talented visual comedian Kirk Marsh. Mr. Marsh was a huge hit with the kids, taking to the stage via the audience while climbing over seats, he performed a series of hilarious and silly stunts, embarrassing the heck out of one unexpecting dad who was called on stage to the utter delight of his kids.

Hurry up and wait, kids While we're on the topic of entertainment, a word about the lines: Let's face it, when you have Freedom's haul of passengers, some lines are a given, no question. Throw in the extra Nickelodeon events planned for this cruise, and they are pretty much unavoidable. At several times throughout the cruise, but particularly on the second day, lines snaked the length of the promenade, as patient parents (and less-patient tykes) waited for tickets to the character breakfast, Slime Time Live and Freedom-Ice shows, all of which had multiple showings. We opted to wait for the Slime Time and Freedom-Ice tickets, but take our chances with the character breakfast, figuring since it was in the dining room we might get away with sneaking in at the last minute. A decision which, given the 25-minute wait, seemed worth the risk, and paid off.

Dining: Anything goes, almost Providing top-notch grub for 3,600 passengers at every meal is a triumph on any cruise, but throw in the finicky eating habits of kids of every possible age, and the inevitable disruption of little ones' bed and nap times (if there are such things on a cruise), and you're talking about the potential for major disaster. Thankfully, disaster was not even close to the case, but there certainly were a few hiccups. According to three different waiters we talked to during our trip, the dining experience on the Nickelodeon cruise was very different than you would expect on a "normal" Freedom of the Seas voyage. It was decidedly unstructured, super-casual, and borderline chaotic at times, particularly at the character breakfasts. But really, no one seemed to mind very much. Families were given either early seating (6:30 p.m.) or late seating (8:30 p.m.) but there were no table assignments. Most people I spoke to appreciated the lack of designated tables, while a few missed what can often be your best excuse to get to know other families aboard. For us, the lack of formality worked fine, and because we were only two, we often got placed with another group instead of dining alone.

We were given second seating dining, which meant an early show and a late dinner each night. But we didn't always abide by it, since 8:30 p.m. is pretty late for my son to eat dinner, and 9 p.m. is even later for him to be sitting down to a show. We opted not to bother to request a change in seating, and just kind of wing it. On some nights, no matter how exciting or kid-friendly the show, after a day of exhausting activities, a late show would have ended in a snooze fest for my son every time. I think earlier dining room seatings (in addition to the present ones), and earlier show options (likewise) would be great for this type of cruise.

On some nights, it just made more sense for us to grab a sandwich at 6:30, head to the show, and stop in at the Cafe Promenade afterward to grab a snack and dessert, though I might have preferred to eat in the dining room instead. In any case, we were never questioned about our dining habits. I get the feeling that folks were put on standby, in an effort to see how things would go in terms of meals for this first cruise. Maybe next time around it will be slightly more structured.

Incidentally, the dining room itself is stunning. Freedom has a three-tiered dining room, which houses three separate restaurants: Leonardo's, Isaac's and Galileo's, on Decks 3, 4 and 5 respectively. While we enjoyed all three dining rooms, and even though I know the same menu is offered in all, Galileo's turned out to be my favorite on account of the scrumptious shrimp ravioli with leeks I had there. In fact, we enjoyed every meal in the dining room, even if the timing was not always ideal. Tyler's favorite was Leonardo's, not because of the food but because a bar waiter trekked 10 decks up to fetch him a shake from Johnny Rockets one day -- so nice! Dress in all of the dining rooms was very casual every night, with most moms opting for casual pants or skirts, or sundresses. There were no formal nights on this cruise. I saw a few stray dads in tuxedos on the first night (cursing their wives), after which I never saw one again.

Throughout the cruise, the buffets at the Windjammer Cafe and Jade were crowded, much more so than usual, with many families opting to grab a quick dinner there (or a pizza from Sorrento's, or a burger from Johnny Rockets) instead of hauling the whole gang to the dining room. But fewer parents than I had expected opted for a quiet dinner entirely without kids, judging from less-than-capacity crowds at the two adults-only specialty restaurants: Chops and Portofino. Invited by some new friends, I opted to try Chops one evening, despite being a vegetarian. Sounds like an odd choice, I realize, but I do eat fish and the seared diver scallops were magnificent -- and my companions thoroughly enjoyed their choice of steaks. It actually turned out to be the most restful night of the cruise, having full support from Tyler, who was happy being left to his own devices in the Adventure Ocean program with his friends.

A Word about the Adventure Ocean Program Led by an absolutely delightful, funny, warm and diligent group of counselors, the Adventure Ocean Program is a terrific example of how to run a children's program on a ship. The kids are kept busy for hours with educational activities and games. They are brought to meals at the Windjammer, where they dine in a separate, supervised area which is roped off, and return to their respective rooms accordingly. The staff went to great lengths to ensure that each child was only not only entertained, but safe and comfortable. One afternoon when I picked up my son, who was in the 6 to 8 group and one of the youngest in his room, I learned he had been pestered quite a bit by an older boy. The counselor assured me that the boy's parents had been spoken to already, and that if he showed a continued inability to get along, he would be asked not to return. Each time I stopped by they were having a great time, once busy with a science experiment, another time playing ball and the last listening to a story.

I did notice, though, that although they brought in additional staff to the Adventure Ocean program for the Nick cruise, there was sometimes a bit of a wait at night. One evening, upon returning to the Explorer's room to pick up my son around 10 p.m., I stood in line for about 15 minutes with about 25 other parents, anxiously waiting to collect our kids. After that time there is a fee of $5 per hour for each child, so parents were racing to beat the clock. Despite the delay, they charged us nothing.

Beyond the character breakfasts and all-you-can eat buffet As any seasoned cruiser knows, there is far more to be gleaned from the experience than the endless stream of food and parade of entertainment. Indeed, countless memories are made on those days ashore, whether on an organized excursion or by meandering the streets at your own pace. And with kids in tow, the opportunities for adventure are endless. We managed to get off and explore each port on our Western Caribbean itinerary. It was during these few forays that I really had a chance to bond with my eldest child over a few virgin daiquiris, and more than a few laughs.

For whatever reason, my son is fascinated with Mexico. Perhaps it's the Dora and Diego connection, could be his penchant for chimichangas, or the opportunity to show off his kindergarten Spanish; but in any case, he was all about getting off the ship in Cozumel. We opted to hire a car with some new friends, an outgoing couple from Texas with two small boys around my son's age, and headed to Playa Paradiso, a beach just 10 minutes, and a $12 car fare, from the port. It's a small stretch, but for our purposes, and a 93-degree day, it proved perfect. For $10 we got lounge chairs and access to all the activities on the beach, including water trampolines, a floating rock wall, kayaks, snorkel equipment, and use of lifejackets. Exhausted, we finished up with two virgin pina coladas at the bar for another $10, which Tyler ordered himself ("dos of those blanco drinks por favor"). Bliss!

And then there was the day-five shore excursion to Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios ,which was enormously fun, despite being equally humiliating. We decided to go it alone for a little mother-son bonding. No problem, mon. I'd been to Jamaica before, and Dunn's is on the tame side for a waterfall, to be sure. What could possibly go wrong? We casually breezed by all the poor saps waiting in line for their guided tours, and headed straight for the action. My son noticed all the folks lining up to rent water shoes at the entrance, but I quickly urged him onward. Half the guides were barefoot, we'd be fine. And indeed, he was fine. But about halfway through our water-wading trek, a big current came and stole one of my flip-flops straight off my foot, sweeping it quickly down the falls and out of sight. Oh, the laughs, as I forged a valiant last-minute attempt to save them, flopping wildly in shin-deep water like some sorry salmon swimming upstream. I didn't get much pity, either, as I hopped my way back to the parking lot at the end of the day, burning asphalt scorching my one naked sole.

In Grand Cayman we fared better, enjoying a morning spent floating carelessly in the clearest water imaginable at Seven Mile Beach, ducking beneath gentle waves and building sand castles with a plastic cup. Sometime around noon, a man I recognized from our cruise screamed "sand shark!" and, true or not, we thought it time for a stroll up the beach. We stopped and chatted with some vendors just off the beach, and it was there we were told that the beach is only actually 5.5 miles long, an interesting little tidbit that Tyler took to sharing with strangers for the remainder of the day.

Our ventures ashore in Labadee were equally as entertaining, if a bit more orchestrated. There were Nickelodeon activities on the beach, as well as a blow-up replica of none other than SpongeBob's pineapple house, which the younger kids adored. We did some shopping for souvenirs at the market, bargaining them down to reasonable price for a wooden saber, which became the envy of many young boys aboard.

The inevitable comparison: Nick vs. Disney How did the first-ever Nickelodeon cruise stack up to a Disney cruise? As you might expect, many families aboard had done Disney sailings, and the comparisons between the two could be heard everywhere, oftentimes during casual conversations in the elevator, other times in outright arguments at the dinner table. In terms of atmosphere, and camaraderie amongst passengers, there are also many similarities between the two. Expect your children to be welcomed and catered to on both Nick and Disney cruises. And during mid-afternoon meltdowns at the pool, expect fellow parents to nod apologetically at you, rather than scowl condescendingly. Stewards will often stop to tousle a child's head in the hallways, rather than smile through his teeth at the extra mess.

"Nothing could compare to Disney's entertainment" was a common theme among avid Disney fans, as was "We've done the Disney thing, and their ships just cannot compare to this" among Nick supporters. I can't really argue with either. It's true, while the entertainment on the Nickelodeon cruise was really good, in terms of effects, and overall wow factor, it was not on par with something you would experience with Disney. However, my son is at an age where he isn't quite as enamored with Mickey and Minnie as he once was, so for him a whole new set of familiar characters was a good thing.

As far as the ship goes, in my mind, no Disney ship can hold a candle to the Freedom. With no ship of its own, Nickelodeon made a wise move by teaming up with Royal Caribbean. As famously kid-friendly as it is, Freedom of the Seas also provides an impressive array of grown-up fun, with options on a level not comparable to a Disney ship. Dining was a little unorganized, as I mentioned, and the Freedom's dining room staff, while truly kind and accommodating, seemed a little shell-shocked with all the kids around. As well, Disney offers slightly earlier, and more dining options, which to me makes more sense.

Still, each and all of the many little Nick touches on this cruise were well-thought out, and welcomed by all, especially the kids. Every night a note and a small trinket were left at turndown for them: a toy fish, a Nickelodeon beach bag, a VIP movie pass lanyard. All provided ways to bring the experience home. The fact is, Nick, which has already announced it will host more cruises, and Disney are simply different options, and many families who love to cruise are welcoming new options from an industry that hasn't exactly catered to children in the past. Each brings something different to the table.

Arriving home with smiles intact: Priceless As it turned out, I never did get stuck dining with a brooding teenager, and in fact didn't see a single one. I never got sprayed with a water gun — at least not uninvited — and the Dora sing-alongs were not so terrible after all. But more importantly, my son and I really wound up having a fantastic and magical time on our cruise, and we bonded in a way that will stay with us for a long time. We were fortunate to meet some of the most kid-friendly staff around, both on the Royal Caribbean and Nickelodeon sides, and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip. But since a Nickelodeon cruise is all about the kids, it's only fitting that he should get the last words, which he uttered just a few minutes after we lugged our suitcases through the front door:

"So, dad, it's your turn to take me next year, right?"

Carrie Calzaretta, Family Travel Editor for The Independent Traveler, Inc., is a mother of two who has traveled extensively with her children, Tess, 1, and Tyler, 6, and lives to tell about it.

Editor's note: There are two more Nickelodeon cruises scheduled for next year. The first will be on Mariner of the Seas, which will sail to the Mexican Rivera. It will depart from Los Angeles on July 26, 2009, with ports yet to be determined. The other will be aboard the Freedom of the Seas, and will have an Eastern Caribbean itinerary, departing on August 9, 2009, from Port Canaveral, with stops in St. Thomas, St. Maarten and CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. Having completed its maiden voyage this August, Nickelodeon is teaming up with Royal Caribbean yet again for some more kid-themed cruises .

It seems Nick is trying to give Disney a run for its money by dabbling into the family travel market with a hotel , resort , theme park , and now cruise. Rather than custom build their own cruise ship, Nickelodeon is dipping a toe into the waters by chartering the biggest boat out there – Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas . This ship already boasts an impressive array of “wow” with an onboard rock wall, wave simulator, ice rink, mini-golf and water park. Add Sponge Bob, Blue, Dora and Diego to the mix, and the kids are in cartoon heaven.

The recent week-long cruise around the western Caribbean was a huge hit. There were character breakfasts, sing-a-longs, interactive games, contests, ice shows, magicians, comedians and Nickelodeon celebrities on hand to host special events and premier screening. Of course, silly antics like Slime Time Live were a prominent draw, where the signature florescent green goo was deployed at regular intervals to the hilarity of the younger passengers. Favorite characters accompanied guests on shore excursions as well.

Naturally, on a ship with over 3,500 passengers, you have to prepare yourself for crowds and long line-ups. Waiting around for activities, shows and meals is tough for even the most patient kids (do they even exist?), not to mention parents. But that’s the price you pay for these kinds of themed extravaganzas. They may complain at the time, but most preschoolers to 12-year-olds will only remember the fun stuff at the end of the day.

Next year’s Nickelodeon 7-day family cruises are already booking up . There’s a cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas sailing from Los Angeles on July 26, 2009 to the Mexican Riviera, and an Eastern Caribbean itinerary on the Freedom of the Seas sailing from Port Canaveral on August 9, 2009. Prices start at around $2700 for a family of two, $4000 for a family of four sharing a cabin.

We booked! We were able to get a GS. DS will be 5, dh & I are going. I'm getting frustrated not being able to book anything with the cruise line, though! They won't give us booking #'s until Nick turns over the res to RCCL in ?June.

Welcome to Cruise Critic mommybot! Have a great time on the Freedom! :D

I can't get signed up for m&m until RCCL takes over Nick's res, and Nick's res # isn't RCCL's and they don't recognize the #, so I'm assuming I can't sign up for m&m until then. BTW, this is our second RCCL cruise. How do I put this in our posts, like yours, with the counter?

Scroll up to the top of this page and click “user cp” then on the left hand side click “edit signature” and you can post stuff in there like what cruises you’ve been on and stuff. To get a countdown clock scroll again to the top of the page and click “countdown clocks” create one and copy your code in to your signature. I hope you got all that! :D

Nicole Kidman's Family Guide: Meet Her Kids With Keith Urban, Tom Cruise

Nicole Kidman 's greatest role isn't on the big or small screen. Instead, it's being the best mom possible to her four children.

"I just always wanted a child," Nicole, 56, told Vogue Australia in December 2017. "I think from a very early age, I wanted a child. I knew that I was going to have a child and that it didn't matter [how], I actually didn't know if I was ever going to give birth to a child. So that was the least of it for me. And what I did first was adopt."

In 1993, the Big Little Lies actress became a mom for the first time when she and her first husband Tom Cruise adopted their daughter, Bella. A few years later, the pair adopted son Connor into their family.

After the couple divorced in 2001, Kidman went on to find love with country singer and fellow Australian Keith Urban . The pair married in 2016 and welcomed daughters Sunday and Faith.

Tom Cruise's Dating History: A Look Back at His A-List Romances

"If it were the choice between my family and Keith, and my career, I wouldn't even bat an eyelid," she told The Australia Women's Weekly in June 2014. "The most important things to me are the love of our relationship and my children. At this stage of my life, and with time being so precious, the joy I get from us as a family outweighs any joy in any other area of my life, by far."

Keep scrolling to learn more about the members of Kidman's family:

Bella Kidman Cruise, 31

Tom, 61, and Nicole adopted daughter Bella shortly after her birth in December 1992.

"From the minute Tom and I were married, I wanted to have babies," Nicole told Vanity Fair in 2007. "And we lost a baby early on, so that was really very traumatic. And that's when we would adopt [our daughter] Bella."

While she was raised outside of the spotlight, Bella graduated from West London's Delmar Academy of Make-up and Hair, before transitioning to a career in fashion.

Although Bella has an active Instagram , followers shouldn't expect her to share family moments. Instead, it's primarily dedicated to her art.

"Her go-to medium was pen and paper for most of her life," her website states . "However, she is now venturing into other formats and mediums. Including digital. Which has been a bit of a game changer in her opinion. We hope you dig it."

Connor Cruise, 29

Nicole and Tom, who wed in 1990, adopted their second child just after his birth in January 1995. In 2008, Connor got a glimpse of the Hollywood spotlight when he starred alongside Will Smith in the drama Seven Pounds . As a teenager, he briefly explored DJ gigs and released a single before making Florida his home.

Although Nicole and Tom divorced six years after their wedding, the actress expressed gratitude for the relationship and the family they created. "I got married really fast and really young," she told Who Magazine in 2012. "But I don't regret that because it got me Bella and Connor and I did have a fantastic marriage for a long period."

According to People , Connor currently resides in the Sunshine State where he fishes and focuses on his barbecuing business, Connor's Meatshack. "Connor has a pretty simple life in Clearwater," a source told the publication. "He lives in his own home in a Scientology community. His life is deep-sea fishing. He has a lot of friends and seems very well-liked."

Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, 15

Named in honor of the Australian patron of the arts, Sunday Reed, Sunday was born in July 2008 and spent much of her childhood with parents Nicole and Keith, 56, in Tennessee. "My daughters are Nashvillians! They have a southern drawl," Nicole told People in 2016. "They have some Aussie. They have an unusual mix. They're hybrids."

Nicole has dropped hints that Sunday is interested in following in mom's footsteps. In addition to showing an interest in directing, she's also participated in theater.

"My daughter just got cast in her school play," Nicole told E! News in January 2017. "So, that's been the main priority, learning lines with her."

Celebrities Who Secretly Welcomed Children

And for those who wanted a season 3 of Big Little Lies , Sunday may be responsible for making it possible.

"She has a very good understanding of things and life, so she was hand-held through it," Nicole revealed to Vogue Australia in January 2024. "She was like, ‘No. There's no more discussion. The third series has to happen … I'm sick of the talk. Sick of circling it. Just get it done.'"

Faith Margaret Kidman Urban, 13

In December 2010, Nicole and Keith surprised fans when they welcomed Faith via gestational surrogate.

It wasn't until April 2024, however, when Faith and her older sister made their red carpet debut at the AFI Life Achievement Award Gala, where their mom was the evening's honoree.

In an interview with Today , Nicole expressed hopes that she was raising her daughters to be outspoken and strong. "So much is stepping aside and letting them become who they are," she explained. "I don't know if I'm teaching that as much as giving them their voices. I let them negotiate so they get a sense of who they are and what they can achieve and accomplish."
