YEAH YEAH YEAHS

July 20 - july 24.

Legendary trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs, makers of iconic indie hits like Heads Will Roll, Date with the Night, Maps, Sacrilege, and recent tune Burning, are ready to make their long-awaited Australian comeback. With huge shows in Melbourne and Sydney, you won’t want to miss the band’s epic live performance on stage.

This news comes off the back of the latest addition to their incredible canon, Cool it Down, their fifth studio album and first since 2013’s Mosquito. The eight-track collection, a landmark in their catalogue, is an expert distillation of their best gifts that impels you to move, and cry, and listen closely.

They never expected it to be so long between albums, and they certainly stayed busy. There was a tour for their 2003 debut album, Fever to Tell that was re-issued in 2017; Karen released an album with Danger Mouse (Lux Prima, 2019) and co-composed the score for the animated film Where Is Anne Frank?; Nick made an album with his hardcore side-project Head Wound City, scored films, and collaborated with artists including Phoebe Bridgers, Amen Dunes and Songhoy Blues; drummer Brian Chase started his own label Chaiken Records.  Karen and Brian both became parents in recent years.

With their sparkling hooks and high energy performances, Yeah Yeah Yeahs are front-runners for the title of best live band in the world. Be front and centre to experience the alchemy, the transformative magic that will happen when the Yeah Yeah Yeahs hit the stage.

More Yeah Yeah Yeahs

LA girl group Automatic get the Thursday night started with a selection of electro-pop confection that kind of jumps to quirky rock and roll beats instead of the usual 808 stutters. Vocalist Izzy Glaudini exudes a sort of femme fatale person as she sings and plays keys trying hard to look a little bored by everything. Bass player Halle Saxon looks lost in the groove. Drummer Lola Dompé has an enthusiastic demeanour, and she takes our attention when dealing with the beats on an electronic drum kit and singing with vocoder effects on her voice. Her father played the drums for Bauhaus, but there is nothing remotely gothic about Automatic, who deal with somewhat bleak no-wave vibes that reflect the times.

Intriguingly, setting up the stage for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs involved white sage smudging. It had been a long nine years between releases for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Last year’s Cool It Down seemed to come from out of nowhere but brought with it a swathe of instantly likeable tunes. Health issues forced them to cancel this tour last year, but when they finally make it on stage, Karen O is clearly happy to be back down under.

Pre-show chit-chat with fans, aging hipsters who were flying their freak flag high, told us about the time the Yeah Yeah Yeahs brought their special brand of chaos and mayhem to Max Watts nee the HiFi Bar and Ballroom when they were here to showcase Fever To Tell . Hard to believe that was twenty years ago. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are not Sgt Peppers’ band, and tonight Karen O and her bandmates sucker punched the crowd with their music till they were KOed into submission.

Spitting Off The Edge Of The World made for a thrilling start on a set list plucked from firm favourites across the band’s five albums. There definitely was glitter on the wet streets of Melbourne this wintry evening. Karen O pushing her quirky glamour, took to the stage looking like a cheerleader for Team Glitter; sparkling at her very best, she indulged photographers and struck several poses just for them. Moving back in time, Cheated Hearts is followed by the guitar grind of Rich . A highly versatile band, they seamlessly flex between heavy indie/alternative guitar noise, punk attitude and feel-good disco rock, which pops.

It’s hard not to think of Blondie, who, also from New York, wanted to dance as much as they rocked. This kind of rock just never gets old. The ironic Art Star with apocalyptic screaming is hilarious. Burning , Zero, and Wolf delivered in quick succession to deliver precisely the kind of Yeah Yeah Yeahs kicks fans were after. Huge beach balls with eyeballs printed on them bounced about the arena. Nick Zinner took the obligatory photos of the crowd. He’s been doing that for years and must have quite a collection of these photos by now. Interestingly, Wolf brought to mind Crystal Castles. Much of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ newer material finds the band moving with the times to craft their sound for the 2020s.

It was a good time until the band stopped playing, and security were heard shouting, “You threw up; it’s your vomit. You are sick. Let’s go,” to which a fan who was perhaps having too good a time wailed, “Love you Karen” repeatedly. It was one of those situations where five or ten minutes felt like an eternity. The vibe the band had worked so hard to create felt a little broken.

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

Karen O gazed upon the fan with empathy. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the rest of the crowd assembled at MCA waited patiently. Getting back to business but looking a little choked up, Karen O graciously said, “I’m sensitive. Love to you all”. While Lovebomb and Soft Shock would have been a mid-set slowdown, they served to build the vibe ahead of the thrills Maps and Heads Will Roll delivered.

Somewhere in there were killer versions of Sacrilege and Gold Lion too. As if the music wasn’t enough to satisfy, the wild strobe lights and pink ticker tape blasted across the arena and took fans to next-level ecstatic revelry.

The encores were all about the glory days of Fever To Tell . A collage of band photos from back in the day were projected behind them. Karen O, Brian Chase , and Nick Zinner delivered blistering versions of Y Control and Dare With The Night that saw older fans defying their age and getting down to pogo and bouncing their way through these tunes. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs delivered a gig with all the passion and intensity they could provide. The entire arena was wholly immersed in the joy of their music. It just feels so good to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs doing what they do best.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Announce Side Shows in Sydney and Melbourne

By Toby Smith

NYC’s excellent YEAH YEAH YEAHS will return to Australia over the New Year period, with a notoriously deadly live experience and universally adored new record, It’s Blitz! in tow. The newly crowned proprietors of the finest zombie rock this side of the century haven’t seen Australia since 2006, and their return comes not a moment too soon.

Already headlining a bunch of Festival bills this summer, finally and deservedly the YEAH YEAH YEAHS announce two of their very own headline shows – one each for Sydney and Melbourne.

So if you’ve missed out on tickets to the Falls Festivals, or you just weren’t allowed because society calls you underage, then don’t miss out on these two limited ALL AGES shows:

Tuesday December 29 Festival Hall, Melbourne ALL AGES www.ticketmaster.com.au or Festival Hall Box Office

Friday January 8 Hordern Pavilion ALL AGES www.ticketek.com.au TICKETS ON SALE TUESDAY 17th NOVEMBER

Karen O and co. will be joined onstage by special guests soon to be announced.

It’s Blitz! has been another quantum leap forward for the band, with tracks like Zero and Heads Will Roll taking them into the kind of sub-goth new wave pop space that one would never have predicted having heard their debut EP back in 2001. It’s Blitz! sees them effortlessly disregard genre schmenre like nobodies business and continue to be that band of good surprises from one move to the next.

The next single from It’s Blitz, Skeletons, goes to radio Mid-November.

As anyone that has seen them in the past will attest, life’s too short to second-guess this band.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Karen O

Early 21 st century New York rockers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs — singer Karen O , guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase — have announced new music and tour dates in the summer and fall. The group, which recently signed with indie powerhouse Secretly Canadian, say they will have new music in the fall.

The group will play a brace of dates in Europe and Australia in the summer before hitting North America, with dates at New York’s Forest Hills Stadium and the Hollywood Bowl in October, where they will be joined by high school punk rockers the Linda Lindas on both dates and (in Los Angeles) by Japanese Breakfast. It seems likely more dates will be added.

YYY US DATES!  It's with true life affirming pleasure to announce our two headline shows in our two hometowns NYC AND LA! pic.twitter.com/PQehIatfdV — Yeah Yeah Yeahs (@YYYs) May 2, 2022

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 6 at 10 a.m. local time.

“It’s with true life affirming pleasure to announce our two headline shows in our two hometowns NYC AND LA supported by two wildly gifted bands Japanese Breakfast and The Linda Lindas at the Hollywood Bowl, with The Linda Lindas supporting in Forest Hills and our other support TBA soon! Representin’ a few generations yo! Cannot wait to see you there!  New music! New Era! And New Home with Secretly Canadian ! Much to celebrate!“ says Karen O.

The group teased the appearances on social media hours on Sunday, before the announcement was made Monday morning.

Formed in 2000, the group was one of the leading lights of the turn-of-the-century New York City rock scene that also included the Strokes, Interpol, LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio, the National, Liars, the Rapture and many others. Their unusually spare lineup created a very full sound, dominated by O’s shape-shifting vocals and wild stage presence, Zinner’s effects-laden guitar and Chase’s propulsive drumming; their self-titled debut EP displayed an unexpectedly versatile sound and, in “Our Time,” an anthem for the burgeoning NYC rock scene of the era, which has since been documented in the Lizzy Goodman’s “Meet Me in the Bathroom” memoir and film.

The group signed with the formidable major label Interscope in 2002 and released their debut full-length, “Fever to Tell,” the following year, which spawned the alternative hit “Maps” and launched Karen as a major media figure. An equally strong sophomore effort, “Show Your Bones,” followed three years later and the more electronic-based “It’s Blitz!” three years after that, and the group finished out the decade as a major festival headliner and one of the biggest alternative groups in the business, outlasting the impact of most of their contemporaries. However, they embarked on solo projects and reunited for a final Interscope album, “Mosquito,” in 2011, which finished out their contract with the label. All three were musically active throughout the 2010s, Zinner with production work most prominently with Karen’s 2019 excellent “Lux Prima” collaboration with songwriter-producer Danger Mouse, which sonically recalled ’60s artists like John Barry and Serge Gainsbourg and showed yet another side of her musical talent.

Karen O on returning to Australia and making new music with Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Three members of Yeah Yeah Yeahs hold up lit sparklers

  • X (formerly Twitter)

"All I can say is that I feel ready to make some music."

New York indie-rock trio Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one of the big drawcards for this year's Splendour In The Grass festival.

Their appearance is big news for fans of the band as it will be the first time the trio, who were once regular Australian visitors, have played in Australia since their Big Day Out appearance in 2013 .

The band went on hiatus later that year, and have played just 18 shows since re-emerging at the end of 2017.

"A couple of years previous to that I had my first kid and I didn't work for like a year," frontwoman Karen O tells Double J about Yeah Yeah Yeahs' return to the live stage.

"I think I felt completely ready to just get on the stage at that point.

"I was a little bit nervous, 'Are these shows just gonna just destroy me completely, now that I'm not like a kid anymore?' But actually was it did the opposite."

Those shows were a celebration of the band's classic 2003 debut album Fever To Tell , which the played in full. Given those songs were written when they were in their early-20s, Karen O had some reservations as to whether they could match their younger selves.

Playing the old songs proved energising rather than exhausting.

"Out of our back catalogue, the Fever To Tell songs felt the most energised and fun to play," she says. "They just gave us energy. And the crowds were so receptive and were going kind of crazy.

"I feel like it was nostalgic to a certain extent, but the energy felt sort of unbridled and freeing, [just] as it did back in the day."

The J Files: Yeah Yeah Yeahs

When the band return to Australia this July, Karen O hopes they can bring some of that same fire they found for those return shows.

"It felt like a kind of triumphant return and I really hope that we can offer that to you guys," she says. "The kind of live show that we put on is really cathartic and there's a sort of raw, unbridled energy to it. Even though it's changed over the years, it's still at its core, that.

"I can promise that people who haven't seen us for a while, who have been waiting to see us or people haven't seen us yet, they'll enjoy that aspect of it."

Revisiting old work can stir up heady emotions and bring back long-forgotten memories. Karen O finds it easy to channel her younger self when performing their early material, but says the relative lack of emotional heft in those songs means that going back to them is more fun than anything.

"The majority of those songs on Fever To Tell , they weren't like super thoughtful songs, with the exception of 'Maps', which was like a pure like feeling song," Karen O says.

"They were just fun. They were posturing to a certain degree; sort of like how you emulate your idols when you're young, they were just kind of swaggery and sort of wild, but [didn't have] a ton of depth to them.

"Playing them, I can just tap into how I felt when I played them back in the day. It's not like the way I perceive them is that different; it feels like wearing that funky coat that makes you feel like a funky person again or something.

"It feels like putting on an old flashy pair of shoes for me when I play those songs. There's not a whole lot else to it."

The Karen O who made Fever To Tell certainly wasn't expecting to be touring with the same band in 2020.

"I remember swearing to myself, probably around that first trip to Australia [in 2002], that there's no way that we were going to be a band for more than like 12 years," she laughs.

"That's like the tops that we're going to be a band. Here we are, 20 years later, coming back to Australia."

While she doesn't know whether Yeah Yeah Yeahs will have new material ready to air at Splendour In The Grass, Karen O feels like new music is in the band's very near future.

"I do not know the answer to that question," she says of airing new material in Australia. "All I can say is that I feel ready to make some music. That's pretty much all I could say to that.

"It feels like time to have something new out there. But that's yet to happen, so we'll see how this year goes."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs play Splendour In The Grass on Friday 24 July. More details, including the full line-up, available here .

Yeah Yeah Yeahs announce 2023 tour

The news comes with a video for their cool it down cut “blacktop.”.

yeah yeah yeahs tour australia

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have announce their 2023 performance dates. They’ll tour the United States in the spring, playing 13 shows in May and early June with alternating support from The Faint and Perfume Genius , and play four European shows in late August, with a set at Yuzawa, Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival the final weekend of July.

Alongside today’s news, the band has released visuals for “Blacktop,” a track from 2022’s Cool It Down , their first new album in nearly a decade. Directed by David Black , the video is a simple concept, overlaying grainy footage of YYY frontwoman Karen O to create a pleasant, retrofuturist effect.

“Each record has one of these diamonds in the rough that just feels like flying to me,” O explains in a press release. “It felt right to keep the video as stripped down and dare I say beautiful in its naïveté. David Black put us in front of his 70s analog video camera with the intention to pull stills for band shots. He had me sing to ‘Blacktop’ before I had even memorized the lyrics. I thought I knew the song by heart but it felt like an introduction, like meeting it for the first time. It wasn’t intended to end up as a video, and as a return to the earliest visuals from the record, it completes a circle. We’re so happy we have it, a simple layered performance for a deceptively simple song. We hope you enjoy.”
