NU travel moves to Fox Feb. 1

n&u travel

Beginning Feb. 1, all University of Nebraska employees will arrange their business travel through the NU system’s new travel partner, Fox World Travel.

Fox World Travel was chosen as the university’s official travel management partner following a competitive bid process. A 13-member, systemwide committee representing faculty and staff from all four universities evaluated the proposals, and recommended Fox World Travel based on scores in areas including best practices, cost savings and pricing. Fox World Travel also is experienced in working with major universities including the University of Wisconsin and the University of Chicago. The committee announced the decision Oct. 17.

Fox World Travel can be reached via phone at 855-694-4287 or 402-206-2112, and by email at [email protected] .

As part of the transition, online travel booking through Concur will be temporarily disabled Jan. 30-31. Travelers should schedule their travel arrangements before Jan. 30 or wait until 7 a.m. Feb. 1, when online booking will again be available.

Travel and Transport, the university’s current travel partner, will be able to assist with current reservations during the downtime. Employees will still be able to access Concur travel requests, expenses and approvals through Firefly.

Frequently asked questions about the transition are available here , and the university’s updated travel policies are available here . Additional questions can be forwarded to the University of Nebraska Travel Office at 402-554-3456 or by email at [email protected] .

LSU Women’s Basketball to travel to Bossier City to play Grambling State Dec. 8

The LSU Tigers will face off against the Grambling State University Tigers on Sunday, Dec. 8.

BOSSIER CITY, La. (WAFB) - The LSU Tigers will face off against the Grambling State University Tigers in Bossier City on Sunday, Dec. 8.

LSU Athletics announced the women’s basketball match-up on Tuesday, May 7.

LSU finalized an agreement for the teams to play at Brookshire Grocery Arena in conjunction with Russ Potts Productions Inc. and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.

The game will allow Mikaylah Williams to play in her hometown.

Tickets for the game will go on sale later in the summer. LSU and Grambling St. last played over a decade ago, a 90-59 win by LSU in Baton Rouge during the 2012-13 season. LSU owns a 4-0 all-time record against Grambling State.

Information provided by LSU Athletics:

LSU’s game in Bossier City against Grambling St. will continue a trend in which the Tigers have played in multiple cities across Louisiana outside of Baton Rouge in each of Coach Kim Mulkey’s three seasons leading the program. LSU played at Louisiana-Lafayette during Coach Mulkey’s first season leading the Tigers and then at Tulane in New Orleans and at Southeastern in Hammond in the following two seasons.

“We could not be more excited to bring LSU to Mikaylah’s hometown of Bossier City in December to play Grambling State,” Coach Mulkey said. “Mikaylah grew up there and it is always special to be able to bring one of our players back to play in their hometown. She has a lot of fans in North Louisiana that have been following her for a long time and will want to come and see her along with the rest of our team. Furthermore, it is always great to be able to bring LSU to different parts of the state because there are people that bleed purple and gold all across Louisiana.”

LSU returns for Coach Mulkey’s fourth season in Baton Rouge after reaching the Elite Eight last season. Bossier City, Louisiana native and Parkway High School graduate Mikaylah Williams is the reigning SEC Freshman of the Year as she will make her return to North Louisiana. Williams put together one of the best freshman seasons in LSU history last year, averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, becoming just the fifth LSU player to rank inside the top-10 in points and assists by a freshman in program history. She scored 20+ points in seven games, including a 42-point performance against Kent State, the most ever recorded by a LSU freshman during the NCAA Era. During her time in high school at Parkway, Williams was a two-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year who led Parkway to a State Championship victory as a McDonald’s All-American. She has also represented her country on the world stage and is a two-time defending Team USA 3×3 Player of the Year with multiple Gold Medals to show for.

Coach Mulkey will also be making a return to North Louisiana. The Tangipahoa Parish native played at Louisiana Tech in college, leading the Lady Techsters to two National Championships, including the first ever women’s basketball NCAA Championship that was played. She began her coaching career at LA Tech too where she helped lead the Lady Techsters to four Final Fours and another National Championship as an assistant coach.

LSU also returns 2024 First Team All-SEC Aneesah Morrow, 2024 Second Team All-SEC Flau’Jae Johnson, 2024 SEC All-Freshman Aalyah Del Rosario, 2023 SEC All-Freshman Sa’Myah Smith, Last-Tear Poa, Amani Bartlett and Izzy Besselman. Smith will be back on the floor after missing the majority of the 2023-24 season with a knee injury. Johnson, Smith and Poa were all key pieces on LSU’s 2023 National Championship roster. The Tigers hit the transfer portal to add forward Jersey Wolfenbarger and guards Shayeann Day-Wilson, Kailyn Gilbert and Mjracle Sheppard. LSU’s lone freshman will be Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year Jada Richard from Lafayette Christian Academy.

Grambling St. is led by Courtney Simmons, who is entering her second season leading the Tigers. Simmons quickly made her mark as a head coach, leading GSU to 23-10 overall record and a 15-3 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). It marked the first time GSU eclipsed 20 wins in a season since 2002-03. The Tigers reached the SWAC Semifinals and earned a berth in the 2024 WNIT, defeating Oral Roberts in the opening round. Last season, Grambling State also beat Arizona State 70-67, GSU’s first win over a Power Five opponent since 2017.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Tigers from LSU and Grambling to meet up for an in-state clash at the neutral site of Brookshire Grocery Arena. With an easy drive for fans of both fan bases, we expect a full house and tremendous game atmosphere on December 8th,” said RPPI President, Zach Franz.

“The Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission looks forward to partnering with RPPI and the Brookshire Grocery Arena to host a highly anticipated LSU and Grambling matchup in December. This game will be a great way for our communities and local alumni groups to unite and support women’s sports,” said Sara Nelms, Director of Sports, Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.

Can a Real ID license replace my U.S. Passport?

M ay 6—STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — With millions of Americans in the process of acquiring a Real ID, the new form of identification that will soon be required for domestic air travel, some may be wondering if they can ditch their U.S. passports.

Starting May 7, 2025, the federal government will require those boarding domestic flights to carry a driver's license or other identification card that is Real ID compliant.

While a Real ID will allow travelers to board flights to anywhere within the United States, it will not be valid for international air travel, meaning those flying abroad will still need to bring their U.S. passports with them to the airport.

U.S. passports, which are already Real ID complaint, will also be accepted for boarding domestic flights once the new requirement takes effect, meaning those who don't want to swap out their ID cards can simply travel with their passports.

GETTING A REAL ID IN NEW YORK

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers residents two options: a standard Real ID or an Enhanced ID.

Both the Real ID and Enhanced ID will allow travelers to board domestic flights and enter some federal buildings.

However, Enhanced ID's will also allow residents to cross United States land and sea borders from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries, without the need for a passport.

Enhanced ID's do not authorize air travel between these countries, strictly land and sea travel. Passports are still required for all international flights.

Real ID's are marked with a star logo in the top-right corner, with Enhanced ID's featuring a banner that reads "Enhanced," along with an American flag in the bottom-right corner.

Standard ID cards, which are still valid for all other purposes outside of domestic flights and entering federal buildings, now feature the phrase "Not For Federal Purposes" in the top-right corner.

Those who wish to obtain a Real ID must go to a DMV office. You cannot get a Real ID online, by phone, or through mail.

There is no additional cost to get a Real ID. However, all normal transaction fees still apply. An Enhanced ID will cost an extra $30, in addition to the normal transaction fees.

The DMV lists the following documents needed to obtain a Real ID or Enhanced ID:

—Proof of identity, such as valid license, birth certificate or passport, with your full first, middle (if applicable) and last name. This name will be displayed on your card as required by federal law.

—Proof of Social Security Number or Social Security Number ineligibility. If you have a valid N.Y. license, permit or ID card, you must bring your original Social Security card or W-2 with full SSN. If you do not have a New York State driver license or identification card, you must bring your Social Security Card or a letter from the Social Security Administration proving your ineligibility to have a social security number.

—Proof of your date of birth.

—Proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency or temporary lawful status in the United States.

—Two different proofs of New York state residence, such as utility bill, bank statement or mortgage statement (a P.O. Box not acceptable).

—If the name on your license, permit, or non-driver ID application does not match the name on your proof of identity, lawful status and Social Security, you must bring in court- or government-issued proof documenting the event causing your name change(s), such as a marriage license, divorce decree, adoption, or court-order document.

For more information on obtaining a Real ID or Enhanced ID, visit the DMV website.

U.S. reissues Level 2 travel warning for Germany. Here’s what you need to know before your next trip

The U.S. State Department has reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Germany due to fears of terrorism. AP

  • Katherine Rodriguez | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com

The U.S. State Department has reissued a Level 2 travel advisory for Germany due to fears of terrorism.

The State Department issued the advisory on Wednesday, ranking the travel advisory on a scale of two out of four. This means that those traveling to an area must “exercise increased caution.”

“Terrorists may attack with little or no warning,” the State Department noted.

The agency added that terrorists could target tourism and transportation hubs, as well as shopping destinations, hotels, clubs, restaurants, local government facilities and major events.

The State Department noted on its website that for those who do decide to travel to Germany, travelers should pay attention to their surroundings , follow the instructions of local authorities, be aware of the latest breaking news in the area and adjust your plans, if necessary. The organization also urges travelers to Germany to create a contingency plan for emergency situations as well as sign up for the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive alerts and make it easier for the State Department to locate you in case of an emergency.

The U.S. Department of State has issued several travel warnings this year with those most recently centered around the Caribbean.

One was a Level 4 “do not travel” warning against traveling to the country of Haiti due to kidnappings and gang violence.

Another warning from the State Department cautioned travelers to “reconsider travel” to the country of Jamaica after 65 people were murdered in one month.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — President Joe Biden is expected to travel to North Carolina on Thursday to meet with the family members of four officers killed earlier this week in the deadliest attack on U.S. law enforcement since 2016.

The president is scheduled to visit Wilmington across the state that day and is planning to add a stop in Charlotte to meet with local officials and the families of officers shot Monday while serving a warrant, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The four officers were killed when a task force made up of officers from different agencies arrived in the residential neighborhood in the city of 900,000 to try to capture 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr. on warrants for possession of a firearm by an ex-felon and fleeing to elude in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Hughes was also killed.

Four other officers were wounded in the shootout, and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a 40-caliber handgun and ammunition were found at the scene. Those killed were identified as Sam Poloche and William Elliott of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Joshua Eyer; and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks.

After the attack, Biden expressed his condolences and support for the community, calling the slain officers “heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us.”

“We must do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them – so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. And it means taking additional action to combat the scourge of gun violence. Now,” Biden said in a statement, calling on leaders in Congress to pass a ban on assault weapons, among other gun control measures.

Also on Wednesday, a local police chief said that an officer from his force who was shot Monday underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. David W. Onley, the police chief of Statesville in the Charlotte metropolitan area, expressed condolences Wednesday and “unwavering solidarity with our law enforcement brethren during this difficult time,” according to a statement released by his office.

One of the four officers injured in the attack was Cpl. Casey Hoover of the Statesville Police Department, who served on the task force. He was shot in his upper torso — an area unprotected by his bulletproof vest.

Hoover was taken by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to a Charlotte hospital, where he underwent surgery. Onley said the officer, who has worked for the Statesville police for eight years, is now stable and is expected to make a full recovery and “exemplifies the bravery and resilience of our law enforcement community.”

Law enforcement officers were still investigating Wednesday, attempting to determine a precise timeline of events and whether Hughes acted alone or with a second shooter.

Hughes’ criminal record in North Carolina goes back more than a decade. It includes prison time and convictions for breaking and entering, reckless driving, eluding arrest and illegally possessing a gun as a former felon, according to state records.

The attack was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement in one incident since five officers were killed by a sniper during a protest in Dallas in 2016.

Authorities did not confirm whether Drake was at home at the time of the shooting, but said his team is cooperating. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Tuesday in the affluent Bridle Path neighborhood of Toronto. Toronto Police Inspector Paul Krawczyk said video of the shooting had been recovered but it was too early in the investigation to talk about a possible motive for the shooting. Krawczyk said the guard who was wounded remains hospitalized.

Porn actor Stormy Daniels has testified at Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial about a sexual encounter she says they had in 2006 that resulted in her being paid off to keep silent during the presidential election a decade later. Daniels’ testimony Tuesday included a detailed and at times graphic accounting of an encounter Trump has denied. Daniels’ testimony is central to the case because in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 Republican presidential campaign, his lawyer Michael Cohen paid her $130,000 to keep quiet. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with the hush money payments. The former president has pleaded not guilty.

After 3 Tourists Go Missing, Bodies Are Found in Baja California

Mexican authorities recovered the three bodies as a search went on for two Australian tourists and a U.S. citizen who disappeared while on vacation.

By Emiliano Rodríguez Mega

Reporting from Mexico City

A dayslong search for three missing tourists who disappeared near a surfing town close to the U.S.-Mexico border ended tragically on Friday as the authorities said that they had located three bodies in a water hole.

Two Australian brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson, and their friend, Jack Carter Rhoad, a U.S. citizen, had been on vacation surfing and camping along the coast near the Mexican city of Ensenada when they disappeared on Saturday.

Debra Robinson, the mother of the brothers, said in a social media post on Wednesday that they had booked an Airbnb in another coastal town north of Ensenada but never showed up there.

“Reaching out to anyone who has seen my two sons. They have not contacted us,” she pleaded to the more than 120,000 members of a community Facebook page created for people interested in touring Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

She added that Callum was a Type 1 diabetic.

The state’s attorney general, María Elena Andrade Ramírez, said in a news conference on Thursday that prosecutors were investigating three people related to the case but that crucial time had passed since the disappearance of the three men.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the last few days that they were reported missing,” Ms. Andrade Ramírez told reporters. “So, that meant that important hours or time was lost.”

In an interview, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said that after close examination of a 50-foot-deep water hole in La Bocana beach, near the town of Santo Tomás, Mexican authorities found three male bodies early on Friday. The already decomposed remains, she added, “meet the characteristics to assume with a high degree of probability” that they are the Robinson siblings and Mr. Rhoad.

Researchers will perform DNA tests to confirm the findings.

Prosecutors also believe that the three people tied to the deaths tried to seize the victims’ vehicle. When they resisted, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said, one man took out a gun, opened fire and then tried to dispose of their bodies. That person has been arrested.

“This aggression seems to have occurred in an unforeseen, circumstantial manner,” she added. “We pledge that this crime will not go unpunished.”

Human remains of a fourth male body, which has not yet been identified and is not connected to this case, was also found at the same site.

In 2022, 192 American citizens died in Mexico, State Department figures show , but most of those deaths were accidents or suicides. Only 46 were ruled as homicides.

The big waves in Baja California have long attracted throngs of surfers and travelers, many of whom have dealt with rising crime rates for nearly two decades.

But record levels of violence have hit the state in recent years. Government data shows that Baja California currently holds first place in vehicle theft and second place in homicides, most of which are related to drug dealing or organized crime, Mexico’s secretary of defense, Luis Cresencio Sandoval, said this year.

An official familiar with the investigation, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said a white pickup truck that the missing tourists had been traveling in was found charred near La Bocana beach. Other belongings and pieces of evidence were also being analyzed, the official added.

The swift effort to find the tourists was a rare exception in a country where nearly 100,000 people remain missing, according to the latest count provided by Mexican officials in March.

A majority of cases remain unsolved. Family members and volunteers are left on their own to follow up on leads, but the presence of cartels and a lack of support from the authorities make searching a dangerous mission .

The recent case in Ensenada recalled an episode in 2015 in which two Australian surfers, Adam Coleman and Dean Lucas, were killed as they drove across Sinaloa, another state in northern Mexico. Local authorities arrested three people who said they shot the two friends after they resisted a robbery. Their bodies were found inside their van, which had been doused in gasoline and set on fire.
