'Journey 3' And '4' Now In Development; Dwayne Johnson To Return

If you were hoping for more family friendly Dwayne Johnson action movies, today is your lucky day. New Line Cinema has hired writers to do not one, but two sequels in the Journey to the Center of the Earth franchise, each of which will be headlined by Johnson.  Chad  and  Carey Hayes , who co-wrote The Conjuring , have been brought on to write Journey 3 and Journey 4 , sequels to the 2008 film  Journey to the Center of the Earth  and its 2012 follow-up  Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. 

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, which isn't the first we've heard of Journey sequels. Director Brad Peyton and screenwriters Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn were previously hired to direct/write Journey 3 with Johnson attached but now the THR reports the Hayes' will "take the project in a different direction than what had been in development before." If things work out, both films will film back to back.

Chad and Carey Hayes are becoming Johnson's guys, which is probably why this change took place. They wrote San Andreas for him as well as a few others things. You have to think if this is becoming another Dwayne Johnson franchise, he's going to want people around him who he trusts. People who know his voice and who he can talk to to drive the story. He's not going to blindly jump into something at this point.

Previously, we'd heard Josh Hutcherson was also planning on coming back for Journey 3 , but that was before The Hunger Games: Catching Fire blew up so huge. You have to think his number went up significantly, and will again after the next two Hunger Games movies. Still, he's kind of the main character so he'd probably have to come back in some capacity.

I haven't seen either of the Journey movies, simply because nothing about them interested me. Families seem to like them though and if making these movies means Johnson can do more risky fare in the future, I'm all for it. But it could also mean the opposite. What do you think?

Why The Rock's Giving Up On Making Journey 3

Between his turns in franchises like G.I. Joe and Fast and Furious (just to name a couple), Dwayne Johnson has earned his Franchise Viagra nickname. That said, not all of his potential projects will ever see the light of day, including a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island . Some fans have wondered why we haven't seen the third installment in the franchise yet, and Johnson has officially taken to social media to explain that he gave up on it because he couldn't creatively make it work. In response to the question of Journey 3 's status, The Rock posted:

So it seems that there was a plan to make a third Journey at one point in time. The Rock wanted to dive further into Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon to push the franchise into trilogy territory. However, as is often the case with franchises such as this, the project ran into creative issues and ended up getting abandoned somewhere in development hell. Now, Dwayne Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his upcoming Luke Hobbs/Deckard Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff , with no intention of journeying back to Journey .

Of course, if you're a fan who wants to see The Rock adventure through a jungle on a blockbuster adventure, then you can always head to your local theater to check out Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . The revival of the board game (now video game) adventure series has made a ton of money and has earned a welcoming response from critics . It's not a Journey movie, but based on his post , it seems that it will have to do for the foreseeable future.

That's not to say that the Journey franchise couldn't conceivably continue without The Rock involved in some capacity. After all, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , despite its status as a sequel, was Dwayne Johnson first installment in the franchise -- which saw him take the reins from Brendan Fraser after 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth . Dropping a box office draw as powerful of The Rock doesn't necessarily seem like the smartest business decision, but if he's not coming back, that could be the only way to get another Journey movie made.

Though it might feel somewhat disheartening for fans to learn that a sequel to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island isn't in the cards at this point, we will bring you more information related to all of Dwayne Johnson's upcoming projects as new details are made available to us. Apparently New Line Cinema is pleased with the team behind the scenes of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island because they’ve decided to keep the same group on board for a potential third installment. If plans for Journey 3 move ahead, director Brad Peyton will carry over, along with writers Brian Gunn, Mark Gunn and Richard Outten , and producers Beau Flynn, Charlotte Huggins and Tripp Vincent. This bodes well for the sequel (which releases on February 10 th ) since we can assume it tested well over the weekend. The film, based on Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” follows Sean Anderson ( Josh Hutcherson ) as he searches for his missing grandfather ( Michael Caine ) on an island crawling with dangerous wildlife. The Wrap reported that though the studio would prefer to reunite cast and crew for a third Journey , it is unclear whether the actors will return or not. Brendan Fraser did not reprise his role from the first movie, Journey to the Center of the Earth , but Hutcherson is back in the lineup. Newcomers to the sequel include Dwayne Johnson as Sean’s new stepfather, who accompanies him to the island. In order to get there, they seek the services of a father/daughter team with access to a helicopter and expert navigational skills, played by Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens.

In this follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” the new 3D family adventure “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” begins when young Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson, reprising his role from the first film) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no island should exist. It’s a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes, and more than one astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Together with a helicopter pilot (Luis Guzman) and his beautiful, strong-willed daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue its lone inhabitant and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever.

When you put Michael Caine on the back of a giant wasp, and get The Rock doing some peck-popping work, you do suspect you’ll get some box office interest. Yet Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , the sequel to the 3D Brendan Fraser vehicle Journey To The Center Of The Earth , was a solid hit back in 2012. In fact, a bigger hit than many were expecting.

So much so, in fact, that the franchise was set to extend by another feature. Director Brad Peyton initially signed up for the third film, having directed the second, and writers Brian and Mark Gunn were hired to pen a script. Dwayne Johnson was expected to return, with Josh Hutcherson, too. But the increasingly busy schedule of Dwayne Johnson seems to have contributed to the death of this project.

And now, to nobody’s surprise, Mr. Johnson  has officially crossed a project off his to-do list. The planned third  Journey  film, the untitled  Journey 3 , has now died a death, as he revealed via his Twitter account…

Johnson has worked with the director of  Journey 2 , Brad Peyton, on  San Andreas  and the upcoming  Rampage  since. The pair were both set to make  Journey 3  together, but have found themselves not short of other projects…

'journey 3' release date, plot spoilers and cast news: movie remains unfinished.

'Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon', the latest in the New Line Cinema 'Journey' franchise, starring The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), was originally slated to premiere August 15 of this year. However, new reports state that the film is not yet ready and remains in its development stage, as no new release date has been officially announced.

The new film is supposedly the second sequel to the 2008 original movie, 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' by Warner Bros. The first sequel, entitled 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island', was released in 2012.

Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes of 'The Conjuring' are set to pen the third installment to the action-adventure fantasy movie, contrary to early reports that said writers Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn will be heading the film's storyline. The plot to the new sequel is currently in its development stage, but 'Journey 3' will still be directed by Brad Peyton of 'Cats & Dogs'.

Both Charlotte Huggins and Beau Flynn, with Sam Turner as executive producer, will produce the upcoming movie. Apart from Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson as Sean, and Selack Demir, whose role remains undisclosed up to this day, will also join the forthcoming 'Journey 3' film.

Additionally, The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson has already been confirmed to return to the franchise in the future film 'Journey 4'. Despite the delays in the forthcoming movie's production, the producers of 'Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon' promise the best film in the franchise so far.

Science fantasy films are loved by everyone and specifically when they feature action and adventure. That is what the ‘ Journey’ franchise proved to be and they were loved for adapting Jules Verne’s worlds mentioned in his books which were beyond anyone’s imagination.

The first film, ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ , was released in 2008 followed by ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ in 2012. Both films were successful at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. However, a third film has been in discussion for a long time but it has not happened yet. A confirmation has not come out so far so let’s check what has been the progress so far.

The Problem With ‘Journey 3: From The Earth To The Moon’                           

Following the release of ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ , there were reports that the makers were planning two more sequels. Dwayne Johnson played the lead role in the second film but if he had to reprise his role in a sequel, it was important for him to get out of his busy schedule which was impossible considering the projects he was working on.

He later responded to a fan through Twitter and stated that ‘ Journey 3 ‘ was not happening as the writers failed in creating a perfect script. He even appeared in ‘Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle’ and the film’s premise was similar to ‘ Journey ‘. The franchise would have worked even without Johnson but possibly the producers did not want to take any risk.

Will Dwayne Johnson Return If ‘Journey 3’ Is Made?

The producers of ‘ Journey ‘ have not given any update on a sequel in all these years because the second film was a bigger success compared to the first film, it is impossible to confirm a third film without Dwayne Johnson. Moreover, he has appeared in similar movies. This includes ‘Jungle Cruise’ , which was released in 2021 and a sequel is also being developed for the same. He was also featured in Rampage which was a box-office success and a sequel is being planned.

Johnson was seen in ‘Black Adam’ , which was released in 2022 and marked his debut as a superhero. He has a few other projects in hand but his hands are full for now and so, audiences should possibly stop expecting ‘ Journey 3 ‘ at least for the next 3-4 years.

Skowhegan Craft Brew Festival set for Saturday

SKOWHEGAN — Beer lovers from around the country are expected to head to Skowhegan on Saturday for the town’s annual Labor Day weekend brew festival.

The Skowhegan Craft Brew Festival is set to feature more than 100 Maine-made craft beers, wines, ciders and spirits from 24 beverage producers, along with local food vendors and four musical acts, according to an announcement from the event’s organizer, the nonprofit organization Main Street Skowhegan.

The festival, which began in 2016, is expected to draw people from Maine, 13 other states and Canada, according to the announcement. So far, people from as far away from Texas, Arizona and Nevada have bought tickets, the organization said.

“We’re thrilled to draw people from near and far to Skowhegan for our annual brew festival,” Kristina Cannon, president and CEO of Main Street Skowhegan, said in the statement. “Not only do events showcase our growing community and all that we have to offer visitors, but they also bring people to town who spend money at our locally owned businesses. Brew fest, in particular, brings people back again and again to our community.”

Tickets are required to attend the brew festival, and can be purchased online at skowhegancraftbrewfest.com . A $50 general admission ticket includes unlimited beverage samples from 3 to 7 p.m. and a souvenir tasting glass. “Designated driver” tickets for those who do not wish to drink alcohol are $10.

Ticket prices increase by $5 the day of the festival, so organizers suggest buying tickets by 6 p.m. Friday. Advertisement

A “VIP hour” at 2 p.m., featuring free food samples, other goodies and live entertainment, is sold out.

The brew festival is to be held along the Kennebec River in downtown Skowhegan, where the event moved last year from its previous location on Water Street .

Skowhegan Craft Brew Festival draws hundreds of beer drinkers to new location

Organizers said last year that the move was intended to help promote ongoing economic revitalization efforts along the town’s waterfront, including the planned River Park. Other events, such as the annual River Fest in August , are intended to achieve that goal, too.

With a contractor on board and the permitting process in its final stages, construction of the in-river whitewater park portion of the overall development is expected to begin in spring 2025 , Cannon said recently.

Main Street Skowhegan uses proceeds from the brew festival to support its ongoing economic development efforts, according to organizers. The event is sponsored by more than a dozen local businesses and organizations.

The festival is expected to take place no matter the weather. As of Thursday, the National Weather Service was predicting mostly cloudy skies in Skowhegan on Saturday, with high temperatures in the mid-70s, and a 50% chance of rain showers after 2 p.m.
