Expectations During a Boat Tour

Before we begin, we wanted to address the following:

The tour companies cannot control mother nature. You can expect a great experience, but there is no guarantee that wildlife or perfect weather will be encountered daily.

We must remember that turtles, whales, dolphins, etc., are wild animals, and no one can control where and when they will appear. You have to be patient and make the best of the situation.

We have been on many boat tours in Hawaii , and the experience varies depending on many factors. However, the crew will do their best to ensure you have a great time.

Also, we have been lucky enough to experience beautiful weather and sunsets and have spotted more wild animals than we could have imagined.

However, we also had a few tours that failed not because of the crew’s fault but because of unfavorable weather conditions and the unpredictability of nature.

We don’t consider these as a failure because the boat ride was still enjoyable with fantastic views. For example, we went on a sunset cruise, and unfortunately, it was overcast. But the crew tried to find whales to compensate, and luckily we spotted two whales on the tour!

Without further ado, let’s dive into the best boat tours in Oahu!

Two boats on the water in Waikiki during a boat tour with a view of the Waikiki Skyline.

1. Star Casual Sunset and Show Cruise

Operated by : Star of Honolulu Cruises and Events

Duration:  2 hours (approx.)

Meeting Point:   Pier 8, Aloha Tower Marketplace, 1 Aloha Tower Dr, Honolulu, HI 96813

Spend two hours with your loved ones enjoying all that Waikiki offers, including the beautiful sunset.

What’s included:

  • Live  Hawaiian music
  • Polynesian Show

Why we love this tour: From the moment we stepped onto the ship, we were surrounded by pleasant staff and live entertainment. We were in awe of the stunning sunset views highlighting the sparkling Waikiki skyline, complete with the iconic Diamond Head in the background.

We also loved the delicious crab, steak, and chicken dinner. It was a pleasant surprise, given most tours do not offer this option. The ship was also quite nice, allowing us room to spread out and explore different parts of the boat.

My plate of food from the Star Casual Sunset Cruise with crabs, steak mashed potatoes and vegetables.

Cons:  If your group is too small to occupy an entire dining table, you may have to share the experience with other passengers. We shared our table with a family of four since our group was only two. We didn’t mind too much, but it’s worth noting. Outside the dinner setting, the ship had plenty of room to walk around and relax.

Cody and me on the Waikiki Glass Bottom Boat Tour with views of Honolulu in the background.

What’s Included:

  • Bottled water

Why we love this tour:  We love that this tour is very budget friendly but still offers an excellent opportunity to explore the beautiful waters of Oahu. The crew was knowledgeable about the area, giving us detailed information about the island and the marine life we spotted. Their jokes weren’t bad either!

We were lucky enough to spot some turtles, dolphins, and green sea turtles during our visit in February. Also, there were only ten people on our tour, but that’s because we visited in the off-season.

Cons: We used the glass bottom panels less since viewing things from the deck was easier and better. This wasn’t a deal breaker to us since it was only a $40 tour, but it’s worth noting since this is advertised as a glass-bottom boat tour.

9. Oahu Shark Dive

Operated by:  North Shore Shark Adventures

Duration: 2 Hours (approx.)

Meeting Point: 66-101 Haleiwa Rd, Haleiwa, HI 96712

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, why not embark on an exciting  Oahu Shark Dive Tour  from the picturesque North Shore of the island? This tour is definitely one of the best tours on Oahu !

Guests will witness wild sharks up close from the safety of an underwater shark cage accompanied by a professional and experienced crew. The crew’s knowledge of shark behavior and the secure cage ensures safety against all shark species.

Watch for sea turtles, dolphins, and humpback whales in winter as you make your way to the shark-viewing spot.

Once you set out in the cage, the thrill and adrenaline rush upon seeing the ocean’s top predators is an unmatched experience. Galapagos, hammerhead, and sandbar sharks, typically between 5-15 feet, are common sightings in these waters.

If you are diving in a group, the cage has ample room for two adult divers and can carry up to eight individuals during each occasion, subject to the weather and current conditions. Nevertheless, if you’d rather stay on the boat, you can still experience an exciting adventure.

Note: This tour offers a money-back guarantee if you don’t see any sharks.

Why we love this tour: The thrilling adventure and the knowledgeable crew are some of the best features of this tour. The chance to observe wild sharks up close from the safety of an underwater cage is an experience of a lifetime.

Cons: This tour is on the North Shore of Oahu, about an hour’s drive from Honolulu . If you are staying in Waikiki, it can be a far drive.

10. BYOB Sunset Cruise off the Waikiki Coast

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes (approx.)

Meeting Point:   1125 Ala Moana Boulevard Slip B-01, Honolulu, HI 96814

The  BYOB Sunset Cruise  offers an affordable alternative to traditional sunset cruises. This tour takes passengers around the Waikiki coastline, providing picturesque views of the city and the captivating Hawaiian sunset.

We took this tour in February and ventured toward Diamond Head for approximately 20 minutes, and we were lucky enough to see whales in the distance. The captain was gracious to stop the boat for passengers to observe the creatures in their natural habitat.

We even saw a pod of spinner dolphins following our boat as we approached Diamond Head.

We headed towards the sunset, but the sky was overcast, so we didn’t see the sunset over the horizon. However, we still witnessed a beautiful pink sky after the sunset. It wasn’t the crew’s fault, so we can’t blame them.

  • Light refreshments

Me taking titanic style photos on the BYOB sunset Cruise Tour in Waikiki, Oahu with views of Diamond Head.

Why we love this tour: We love a good affordable tour option, and this BYOB Sunset Cruise does not disappoint. It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the Waikiki beachfront for an hour or two.

Also, being on this boat experience brought back memories of the thrilling movie Titanic. The scenery was breathtaking, and I loved taking photos with the gorgeous Diamond Head in the background. Additionally, the crew was very nice and hospitable.

Cons: This tour is BYOB, so bring drinks if you prefer an adult beverage.\

Waikiki friday night fireworks.

If you are in Oahu and in Waikiki on Friday, you MUST do the Glass Bottom boat tour to see the Friday night fireworks, it was an amazing place to view this spectacular event and you will not regret it at all. They are not far from Ala Moana and definitely on the TO DO List for Waikiki.

GJScott • TRIPADVISOR

Great experience.

The outing was all you can ask for, history, local stories, whales, dolphins, turtles, fish and spectacular views of Waikiki and Diamond head. We had calm seas, overcast at 74 degrees. It was a great experience.

Relaxing cruise with gorgeous views.

Amazing experience! We went on the sunset tour with my relatives from Japan; the captains - Malako and Ford - were friendly and knowledgable the entire time. I appreciated them offering to take photos for us. They played nice music the whole time, and the views were amazing! Would highly recommend it!

AFTERNOON GLASS BOTTOM BOAT TOUR IN WAIKIKI (TOP SELLER)

Glass Bottom Boat Tour : All aboard the Haleiwa Queen, enjoy the clear view of the Pacific Ocean floor as you cruise over live tropical reefs and one of Hawaii’s shipwrecks. This is by far the cheapest boat tour on Oahu but also one of the most interesting.

The glass-bottom floor of the boat allows you to see sea life as it swims by and also gets a great view of one of the many shipwrecks on the coast of Oahu. A great afternoon adventure for the whole family and a very unique experience.

NORTH SHARK SHARK CAGE DIVE ADVENTURE

North Shark Shark Cage Dive Adventure : Hopefully, you’re ready for this because this may be the most exciting tour you have ever gone on! I did this tour and loved it, you can read my full review here . An Oahu shark dive is one of the best value tours to choose from for your first shark dive experience.

You will travel approximately 3 miles off the coast to an area that is inhabited by a large shark population and you will be jumping in a shark cage behind the vessel to face to face these amazing 5′ to 15′ long sharks.

OAHU WHALE WATCHING EXCURSION

Oahu Whale Watching Excursion : Whale watching is another popular boat excursion in Oahu and this tour operator will allow you to encounter majestic humpback whales from a spacious monohull or Catamaran boat. The boat can fit approximately 40 pax but they limit up to 24 guests so you’ll have plenty of room to view around while cruising off the coast for 2 hours. Snacks and drinks are free onboard and also round-trip transportation from Waikiki or Ko Olina. You’ll probably need to dress appropriately as this tour operates in all weather conditions.

The 2-hour experience of seeing whales will for sure take your breath away. In the event that you don’t spot them, you will be given another tour for free. Definitely a must-do excursion on Oahu!

OAHU ATLANTIS SUBMARINE ADVENTURE

Oahu Atlantis Submarine Adventure : One of the most unique boat tours on Oahu is the Atlantis Submarine, a tour that takes you below the surface to see the beauty of the underwater world. I did this tour with my family and they loved it. The tour departs from the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki and takes you to a submarine dive spot. Atlantis Submarines offers a one-of-a-kind underwater experience giving guests a close-up view of an array of sea creatures, exotic coral reefs, and numerous sunken vessels without getting wet.

We saw sharks, turtles, plane wrecks, and shipwrecks. It’s like swimming in a giant aquarium, but staying dry the whole time!  Descending 100 feet underwater is an adventure in itself.

THE FOUR MOST POPULAR OAHU TOURS

  • Doors-Off Oahu Helicopter Flight Tour : My number one recommendation is to do a heli-flight (doors off) and be blown away when you see Oahu from the air.
  • North Shore Shark Cage Tour : The biggest adrenaline rush you can have in Hawaii is beneath the surface with sharks!
  • Eco-Friendly Dolphin and Snorkel Tour : One of the best experiences I had on Oahu was swimming with the beautiful spinner dolphins on this exact tour.
  • Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise by Catamaran : The number 1 MOST POPULAR snorkel tour on Oahu. GUARANTEED Turtles!

TURTLE CANYON SNORKEL CRUISE BY CATAMARAN

Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise By Catamaran : If you’re keen to further explore Oahu’s warm waters and encounter giant sea turtles, then the Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise by Catamaran may be the right tour for you. Not only do you get the chance to swim with these friendly giants and tons of tropical fish, but you’ll also get to see some of the most beautiful island locations Oahu has to offer.

This is a good quick snorkeling trip if you don’t have heaps of time or don’t feel like a whole day out. You are picked up from your Waikiki hotel and taken to the harbor for a short boat ride. The food is really good too, you’ll love the kalua pork! Something that people about this tour is the staff! They really make sure you are entertained and you will have the best trip to Oahu.

Oahu – from Calm Bays to Wild Waves

Oahu and Waimanalo beach

Sitting majestically at the crossroads of the Pacific, Oahu emerges as a crowning gem amid the Hawaiian archipelago. Beyond its lush terrains and shimmering shores lies a marine realm rich with life and soaked in history. The whispers of the island echo tales of intrepid Polynesian seafarers, fierce naval confrontations, and the seamless fusion of diverse cultures. Yet, it’s only when you venture into Oahu’s embrace of azure that you truly fathom the depths of its maritime allure.

Imagine observing spinner dolphins frolicking in their natural habitat or witnessing the awe-inspiring journey of humpback whales. The underwaters of Oahu are a repository of biodiversity, with radiant coral ecosystems harboring a multitude of marine species. As you set sail, the vast horizon, punctuated occasionally by rainbows or distant isles, beckons invitingly.

An Oahu boat tour isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s about immersing oneself in a maritime narrative. As the gentle sea zephyrs play with your senses, the island unfolds its intricate coastline, from tranquil bays and formidable cliffs to sun-kissed beaches, like chapters of a riveting saga waiting to be discovered.

Why Oahu Reigns Supreme for Marine Expeditions?

The moniker “The Gathering Place,” often ascribed to Oahu, isn’t merely a testament to its vibrant socio-cultural tapestry but resonates deeply with the multifaceted marine experiences it proffers. So, what propels Oahu to the forefront of maritime exploration destinations?

Strategic Maritime Nexus & Coastal Marvels

Oahu’s pivotal position amid the Hawaiian cluster grants it a maritime legacy unparalleled in richness. From the epoch of ancient Polynesian mariners charting untraveled waters to today’s marine enthusiasts, Oahu has consistently been a maritime epicenter.

The island’s allure isn’t confined to its golden beaches. It is a canvas of stark contrasts: rugged cliffs, concealed marine grottoes, protected lagoons, and thriving coral habitats. The boat expeditions around Oahu are a visual and educational odyssey. Be it the hallowed waters of Pearl Harbor with its echoes of history or the untouched marine sanctuaries along its eastern perimeter, the journey is nothing short of transformative.

From Serene Bays to Surfing Titans

Honolulu from above

The dichotomy of Oahu’s waters is poetic. To the south, the tranquil confines of Waikiki and Honolulu provide a sanctuary where gentle ripples kiss the shoreline and sailboats drift languidly under a setting sun. Ideal for leisure cruises and novice marine enthusiasts, this is where memories are crafted.

Conversely, the North Shore, with its towering waves, especially during winter, stands as a testament to the ocean’s raw power. Renowned globally among surf aficionados, the spectacle of waves crashing at spots like the Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay is both humbling and exhilarating.

To encapsulate, Oahu’s maritime offerings are an anthology of experiences, from serene voyages under starlit skies and heart-pounding encounters with marine behemoths to privileged vantage points at iconic surf locales. Embarking on an Oahu boat tour is to set sail into a world where every horizon is a new adventure waiting to unfurl.

Rave Reviews

Traveling at the age of 20 with your friends is a guaranteed fun time but when you do amazingly fun excursions like the Makani Catamaran, it just makes your vacations a thousand times better! My friends and I had such a great time thanks to your amazing staff. They’re very nice and very helpful. I’ve been on the catamaran three times and every time it just seems to get better and better. I highly recommend Makani Catamaran, MAHALO!!! oh and we saw turtles and DOLPHINS on our sail, IT WAS AMAZING!!!

This was by far the best catamaran we have been on! The staff is AMAZING. The crew is so helpful and funny. They make you feel like your part of their crew for sure. We loved spending time on the water and hearing all they had to say about the islands and animals. The captain was great! We will be doing this again!

We saw a sea turtle and a group of dolphins followed us for a while and did some "tricks". No whales on this trip but the crew made the experience fun by telling jokes and talking about the animals.

I can't say enough nice things about our trip on the Makani Catamaran! The staff were warm and friendly, the drinks we're tasty and the views were breathtaking. We had the opportunity to stand in the Captain's Galley and take photos. Captain Jon was so accommodating and thoughtful - he even offered to take our picture. This is one experience you do not want to miss out on! Highly recommend.

The boat was in great shape, staff was very professional and committed to safety. I appreciated that more than anything. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone visiting the Island, the views are well worth it. Great value trip!

So, full disclosure I was pretty skeptical that this would be fun at all. In fact, this was totally my wifes idea. That said, of all the things we did in Hawaii, this ended up being one of my favorites. We had been doing pushing ourselves pretty hard for several days up to this point and it was just really nice to sit back for a couple hours with drinks in hand and hang out as a family. We sat on the netting in the front and our 9,7, and 5 year old kids thought it was awesome to watch the water go by underneath and at one point even had some dolphins following us. 100% would suggest and will definitely do again.

I am so happy that I booked this during our trip to Hawaii. The crew was nice, hospitable, and very engaging. They made the sail super fun for everyone on board. Our captain was even able to show us sea turtles and a whale, even though we were not promised that when booking! Plus there was a full service bar and the drinks were awesome! I would definitely recommend to everyone. It is definitely worth it.

They have this operation dialed in. It is short but very sweet. The open bar and fun, yet competent, staff makes for good times on the water. The views are great, they have good music going, and it is fun meeting other folks on board. Definitely check it out!

What a wonderful experience! The crew was friendly and fun. The drinks were tasty and plentiful. The sunset was gorgeous and the moonrise was a terrific bonus. I highly recommend!

This was a great experience. This sail is very calm and relaxing and a completely different experience from the trade wind sails, where you expect to get tossed around and get wet. The crew was very friendly and attentive. The sunset was gorgeous, even though it was overcast all day. My wife and I now prefer this sail over the trade winds sails we have done in the past. Great sail!

My friend was visiting me on the island and we both loved this experience! The crew is so refreshing and fun! It was a mix of young and old! It was a great time! Would definitely recommend!

This is the best deal in Waikiki. Was there for a week and went on this cruise three times. ~$30 for one hour sail with open bar. So, you can sit in a hotel bar and nurse one drink or be on the ocean enjoying amazing views, listen to lively music and chug down multiple drinks. No brainer. Shout out to Dustin for the amazing sailing experience.

This was a total blast! The guys running the boat were friendly and entertaining. The sites were phenomenal. The sea life is gorgeous. And the drinks were very good. I booked a second trip, can’t wait to sale again!

ENJOY YOUR TRIP.

We went on the 7am whale tour and had such a nice time. As we were leaving the marina we witnessed the most beautiful sunrise, as we got closer to diamond head the sun looked brighter and bigger than ever. We saw so many whales on this tour we even saw one Breech out of the water it was the coolest thing ever! Steve and Tony are fantastic! They are such a good team. Steve knows all things whales, he's so knowledgeable and had none stop facts about whales and the island of Waikiki itself. Tony's commentary add something special to the trip as well and he knows all the spots for whale watching. Cannot recommend this early morning whale watching trip enough!!

My family and I had a great time with Steve (owner) and Cpt Steve. From the beginning we felt very welcomed. He was born in the island and knows a lot of the history which I enjoyed listening while the boat was under way. If you have a question about the island, and even want to ask for tips, Steve is the person to ask. The boat was very clean and beautiful. He explained to me that it took him 5 years to restore it. My daughter wanted to be in the boat when she saw the pictures. He customized the trip to our likes. We anchored in an area near the Waikiki coast where I enjoyed snorkeling. He has other activities which he offered, but was what I wanted. When the time was over, we had a great lunch and came back. Next time I'm back, I will definitely seek them again. My family agreed that it was one of the highlights of our trip.

Booked a private boat charter with Steve of Kona Star for mother in law's 60th birthday. We booked two hours (3-5pm). The boat was very easy to find. We met Steve the owner and Steve the boat driver, both were super friendly and accommodating. The boat itself is very large, spacious, clean - the floors were remodeled in a non-slip material. Steve gave us a very nice tour on the drive out, detailing the history of Honolulu, which my in-laws really really loved. We stopped at a scenic spot out in the ocean with Diamond Head in the background, and got out to swim for a little bit. They had snacks for us after our swim. My kid loved the watermelon and pineapple that they cut up for us. They had all kinds of snacks available - sandwiches, cookies, chips, drinks, fruit, veggies, and cheese and crackers. On a separate note, my son had a brief meltdown after we took him out of the ocean, and Steve offered to hold him, which immediately calmed him down. My MIL is also deathly scared of boats, but she loved every second of this boat trip. Thank you so much to Steve and Steve for making her 60th birthday boat trip extra extra special. Definitely recommend Steve and this boat!!!

I booked a last-minute excursion with Steve and the Kona Star while my family was in Waikiki and it was truly the highlight of our stay. From the moment I called with a capacity question, Steve was beyond personable and helpful with every detail. When I neglected to follow his instructions for arrival and was lost, he cheerfully took the time to come meet us and didn't let that detract from our time on the ocean. Once we stepped foot on the boat, the captain (whose name sadly escapes me at the moment) was very pleasant and generous and Steve for his part, never sat still in order to provide my family with an exceptional experience. He brought out all of the stops including a veggie tray, delicious sandwiches, a charcuterie board, fresh-cut Hawaiian fruit that tastes much better than what you get stateside. I will definitely book Steve and the Kona Star for another voyage the next time I'm in Waikiki and I recommend him to anyone else looking, in the area. I've chartered quite a few boats and yachts in my day, but Steve really set an extremely high standard and I thank him and the captain for such an exceptional voyage. - Phoenix

We took a morning ride with Steve and Steve and it was excellent. They were very gracious and knowledgeable hosts and treated the family great! Definitely recommend these guys and will absolutely come back.

Photo of Candy P.

Steve and Tony were excellent. They showed so much hospitality with food, drinks, and so much history and education about whales and the island. They went the extra mile to make sure we seen whales which we did. I highly recommend them and would definitely use them again. Thanks Steve and Tony

Whitehaven Beach: Whitsunday Island, Australia

Whitehaven beach and Whitsundays, Aerial view, Queensland, East Coast. Australia

Located off the coast of Queensland on the largest of the Whitsunday Islands, Whitehaven Beach mesmerizes visitors with its bright white silica sand and turquoise water. When they're not snapping photos of their surroundings, beachgoers can swim in the clear water or walk to noteworthy spots like Hill Inlet – a shallow inlet on the northern end of the beach – and Chance Bay, which is a quieter area south of the beach that overlooks Pentecost Island. Keep in mind, though, this 4-mile-long stretch of sand is only accessible by boat, helicopter or seaplane from Hamilton Island (the most popular inhabited island in the Whitsundays) and Airlie Beach on the mainland. Consider staying at Hamilton Island's five-star qualia resort for luxurious waterfront accommodations. The hotel staff can assist with booking excursions to Whitehaven Beach, as well as scuba diving tours of the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef .

Cannon Beach: Cannon Beach, Oregon

Aerial shot of Cannon Beach, a wide stretch of sand on the northern Oregon Coast

If your perfect beach vacation spot features postcard-worthy topography and lots of solitude, look no further than Cannon Beach. In this Pacific Northwest town about 80 miles northwest of Portland , you'll discover nearly 4 miles of shore with jaw-dropping rock formations jutting out of the Pacific Ocean. Head to the center of the beach between Ecola Creek and Tolovana Park to gaze at Haystack Rock, a 235-foot-tall sea stack known for its vibrant tide pools and puffin colony. You can even build a fire on the beach to relax beside while watching the sun set. When you need a break from the beach, walk to downtown Cannon Beach to browse its art galleries, boutiques and eateries. Or, retreat to one of the town's inns, lodges or resorts. Two traveler-approved options within steps of the beach include the Stephanie Inn and The Ocean Lodge.

Horseshoe Bay Beach: Bermuda

Horseshoe Bay Beach

Visit Horseshoe Bay Beach to put a unique spin on your next beach getaway. Situated on Bermuda 's South Shore, this pink sand beach – made of a blend of crushed coral – is one of the island's most popular stretches of sand. Families come here to splash in its calm turquoise water and build blush-colored sandcastles. Meanwhile, active travelers love exploring its hidden coves, trekking its trails to Warwick Long Bay , and enjoying water sports like snorkeling and paddleboarding (loaner equipment is available for a fee). Horseshoe Bay Beach's proximity to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse also makes it a prime spot to unwind after you climb the 117-foot-tall structure. Don't forget to save time for a snow cone or rum swizzle (Bermuda's national drink) from the on-site Rum Bum Beach Bar before retiring for the evening at the nearby Hamilton Princess Hotel & Beach Club , one of the area's top beach resorts .

Mohegan Bluffs: New Shoreham, Rhode Island

A beautiful beach after a steep cliff on Block Island at the Mohegan Bluffs

What the beach at Mohegan Bluffs lacks in easy accessibility it more than makes up for in natural beauty. Located at the base of its 200-foot-tall namesake, this Block Island shore offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and – on clear days – New York's Long Island. Upon arrival, pause to admire your surroundings and read about the bluffs' ties to the Indigenous Manissean people. Then, take the 141 steps down to the sand to sunbathe or swim. When you do climb back to the top, you can walk to Southeast Light to get an up-close look at its 19th-century lighthouse, then hop on a bike to explore the island. The lighthouse and beach are both stops on the self-guided Block Island Bicycle Tour. Travelers can end the day with a stay at the Spring House Hotel or the 1661 Inn, two boutique properties with spectacular ocean vistas.

Siesta Beach: Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key Beach at sunset, Sarasota, Florida

Regularly lauded for having one of Florida's best beaches , Siesta Key – which is located less than 7 miles southwest of Sarasota – boasts three gorgeous shorelines, including Siesta Beach. Here, you'll find colorful lifeguard stands sitting on soft sand made almost entirely of quartz, which gives the sand its pure white appearance and keeps it cool to the touch even on the hottest Florida days. Plus, Siesta Beach offers volleyball courts, a playground, concession stands and beach wheelchairs, among other amenities, making it ideal for everyone from families to fitness buffs. When you're ready for a change of scenery, venture a few blocks north to Siesta Key Village to shop, grab a drink or bite to eat, or listen to live music. For lodging, reserve a vacation rental or a room at a boutique hotel like Tropical Beach Resorts .

Reynisfjara: Iceland

Reynisfjara, a black sand beach in Vik, south coast of Iceland, in winter, at sunset.

Though you may not think of Iceland as a beach vacation destination, its abundance of volcanoes sets the stage for an otherworldly beach experience. The country is home to several black sand beaches made from volcanic ash, but the most striking is Reynisfjara in South Iceland . At this desolate beach, you'll discover jet-black sand, an enormous cave, giant offshore rock formations and a series of stacked basalt columns that will all take your breath away. Plus, the beach offers proximity to Vík, a seaside village known for its Icelandic Lava Show – the world's only opportunity to safely observe molten lava – and outdoor adventures like glacier hikes and ice cave treks. If you time your visit right, Reynisfjara and other black sand beaches can make a great spot to see the northern lights in Iceland . Accommodations by Reynisfjara are limited, so consider making a daytrip from popular hotels like The Retreat or the Silica Hotel, which both overlook Iceland's world-renowned Blue Lagoon and sit about 30 miles southwest of Reykjavik .

Hidden Beach: Marietas Islands, Mexico

Seascape of the Mexican Pacific

This beach on Mexico's Marietas Islands – off the country's western coast – is truly a hidden gem. Only accessible by boat from tourist hot spots like Puerto Vallarta and Punta Mita, Hidden Beach wows visitors with its soft sand, crystal-clear water and one-of-a-kind location. Upon arrival, beachgoers must swim or kayak through a long water tunnel to reach the secluded beach, which sits within an exposed cave reportedly used for bombing drills during World War I. The unique layout makes the beach incredibly photogenic, as well as a haven for all kinds of wildlife. Birders can look for blue-footed boobies from the sand, while snorkelers should keep their eyes peeled for dolphins, turtles and even humpback whales. Following your visit, travelers can unwind back on the mainland at a chic all-inclusive resort like Hotel Mousai or IBEROSTAR Selection Playa Mita .

The Baths: Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands

Beautiful tropical beach with white sand, turquoise ocean water and blue sky at Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands in Caribbean

Head to The Baths in the British Virgin Islands if you crave awe-inspiring vistas everywhere you turn. Located on Virgin Gorda, this stretch of sand is one of the world's most beautiful white sand beaches – and it's easy to see why. Granite boulders tower above the beach and shelter rock pools and caves that you can explore on foot. Follow the path of steps and rope handrails to get to Devil's Bay, a prime place for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. Or, spend the bulk of your time climbing The Baths' massive boulders and cooling off in one of the beach's grottoes. If you're not visiting The Baths on a Caribbean cruise – many of which offer shore excursions to Virgin Gorda when stopping in the British Virgin Islands – choose the luxe Rosewood Little Dix Bay as your on-island home away from home.

Anakena: Easter Island

Easter Island a mystic place in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, maybe the most remote area in the world if we take onto consideration the distance to the mainland, Moais standing facing the elements and remembering and old amazing culture

For a truly unique backdrop while sunbathing and swimming, visit Anakena on remote Easter Island. On the island's main beach, you'll find white coral sand, swaying palm trees, and eight broken and intact moai statues. The archaeological treasures sit atop two ahu (stone altars) set near the Pacific Ocean. Contemplate the statues' mysterious origins from up close – according to oral tradition, they mark the arrival of Polynesian settlers, the island's first inhabitants – then head down to the beach to relax on the beautiful sand and in the calm turquoise water. Once you've worked up an appetite, order a tuna empanada or a bowl of poe (a sweet pumpkin- and flour-based pudding) to enjoy picnic-style before exploring other parts of Rapa Nui National Park, which occupies roughly 40% of the island. Although Easter Island accommodations are limited, you'll have a few traveler-approved options to choose from, including Nayara Hangaroa and explora Rapa Nui.

Navagio Beach: Zakynthos, Greece

Aerial of Shipwreck Beach (Navagio) and boats on vibrant blue water in Zakynthos, Greece.

Nicknamed Shipwreck Beach because of the shipwrecked vessel that washed up onto its shore in the 1980s, Navagio Beach boasts a breathtaking setting on the northwestern coast of the Greek island of Zakynthos (also called Zante). What's left of the boat, which sits in the middle of the pebbly beach, is surrounded by vertical cliffs overlooking the turquoise Ionian Sea. Beach activities are limited to swimming and sunbathing. However, Navagio Beach's isolated location – which is only accessible by boat from Porto Vromi – means you'll likely see other noteworthy sights, such as the mesmerizing Blue Caves, on your way to and from the shore. Most Navagio Beach daytrips include hotel transfers from tourist areas like Planos (or Tsilivi) and Zante Town, so plan on staying in one of these locations. Traveler favorites include the Lesante Classic Luxury Hotel & Spa and TUI BLUE Caravel.

Papakōlea Beach: Big Island, Hawaii

most beautiful beaches in the world

Prepare to be wowed by the rare sands that cover this Big Island beauty. One of only four green sand beaches known to exist, Papakōlea Beach is a treat for the eyes. To reach the beach, which sits south of the Mauna Loa volcano on Mahana Bay, you'll have to hike nearly 3 miles down from its parking lot. Though the trek can be challenging, the unique setting is well worth the effort. You'll discover vivid green sand made from olivine deposited during volcanic eruptions, plus impressive gray cliffs and clear blue water. (Note, however, that there are no on-site amenities available at the beach.) After a few hours of lounging – swimming is discouraged due to the strong undertow – check out nearby attractions like the black sand Punalu'u Beach and Kula Kai Caverns. There are limited lodging options nearby, but the towns of Waimea, Kailua-Kona and Hilo are home to dozens of top-notch properties. If you're looking for luxury, base yourself in Waimea at a high-end hotel like the Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii .

Tulum Ruins Beach: Tulum, Mexico

The beach and ruins of the Mayan civilization in Tulum, Mexico, on a sunny day.

This beach situated beneath the ruins of Tulum's famed archaeological site provides jaw-dropping views of El Castillo (a cliffside Mayan castle) and the Caribbean Sea. Descend the steps by the castle to get to the stunning white sand beach of Playa Ruinas and swim in its aquamarine waters. To rub elbows with fewer tourists, arrive right when the attraction opens in the morning. Keep in mind that an entrance fee of 85 Mexican pesos (about $4) per person applies. Once you've gotten your fill of the beach and its famous ruins, head to El Gran Cenote to snorkel or peruse the shops, restaurants and bars scattered throughout downtown Tulum . Then, hang your hat at a luxurious waterfront property like Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa or Jashita Hotel . Both sit around 10 miles northeast of the beach.

South Dune Beach: House Harbour Island, Quebec

"Sandstone Cliffs and the Coastline of Magdalen Islands, Quebec. The Magdalen Islands (les de la Madeleine) form a small archipelago in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Though closer to Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia, the islands form part of the Canadian province of Quebec."

Canada may not seem like an obvious choice for a beach vacation , but South Dune (Dune du Sud) Beach will sway you to think otherwise. Located on House Harbour Island (also called Île du Havre aux Maisons), one of 12 islands that make up the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, this beach stands out for its towering red cliffs. Not only do the cliffs provide a gorgeous contrast to the gulf's blue water and the shore's white sand, but they also help shelter beachgoers from the wind, making the beach ideal for a stroll. Plus, you'll have access to picnic tables, should you wish to bring some food to enjoy by the water. Be sure to arrive during low tide so you can explore the cliffs' caves, and don't forget to visit the nearby Cape Alright lighthouse. For lodging, consider Domaine du Vieux Couvent, a charming former convent with around a dozen cozy rooms.

Mayflower Beach: Dennis, Massachusetts

Mayflower Beach in Dennis on Cape Cod. Cape Cod is famous, worldwide, as a coastal vacation destination with some of New England's premier beach destinations

The New England haven of Cape Cod is home to dozens of beautiful beaches, but few impress visitors like Mayflower Beach. At this Mid-Cape beach in the small town of Dennis, beachgoers will find amenities like a picnic area and a boardwalk, as well as plenty of space for beach games. But what sets this shore apart from others is what's exposed at low tide. When the water level drops, tide pools are available for kids to play in. Additionally, tidal flats appear, enabling visitors to walk for miles in ankle-deep water. Those who need a break from the sun can catch a performance at The Cape Playhouse – also in Dennis – or tour the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port. Two top properties located within 15 miles of the beach include The Mansion at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club and Wequassett Resort and Golf Club .

Railay Beach: Thailand

Thai traditional wooden longtail boat and beautiful sand Railay Beach in Krabi province. Ao Nang, Thailand.

Travel to Thailand's Railay Beach area for incredible scenery and plenty of amenities. Overlooking the Andaman Sea from its perch on this peninsula in southern Thailand , this beach destination's four shores feature massive limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water and clean white sand. Head to Railay Beach's northern stretch of sand (known as Ton Sai Beach) to rock climb, or venture to Railay East for a quiet spot to catch a colorful sunrise. If your main objective is to get in the water, you can check out Phra Nang Beach, a southern shore with shallow, calm water ideal for swimming and snorkeling. For those who crave a little bit of everything, there's Railay West. This beach provides countless opportunities for sunbathing, swimming and rock climbing, plus it sits close to restaurants, shops, bars and accommodations. Stay at Railay West's Rayavadee for five-star digs by the sea.

Marinha Beach: Portugal

Landscape with beautiful Praia da Marinha, one of the most famous beaches of Portugal, located on the Atlantic coast in Lagoa, Algarve

Your jaw will instantly drop the moment you arrive here. Situated within southern Portugal 's Algarve region, Marinha Beach (or Praia de Marinha) boasts a hard-to-reach location alongside limestone cliffs. Getting to the beach requires traversing staircases and steep slopes down to the shore. Though this means Marinha Beach isn't suitable for travelers with mobility limitations, its remote location helps prevent overcrowding, meaning you can snap plenty of unobstructed photos. Soak up some sun on the sand, then go snorkeling in the clear water (but remember to bring your own gear, since rentals are not available on-site). If you visit during low tide, you can also walk to additional beaches, sea caves and the famed M-shaped rock formation. After exploring the beach, travelers can sign up for a boat tour to see more sights from the water or unwind at the upscale Vila Alba Resort, which sits about a mile northeast.

Baker Beach: San Francisco

Classic panoramic view of famous Golden Gate Bridge seen from scenic Baker Beach in beautiful golden evening light on a sunny day with blue sky and clouds in summer, San Francisco, California, USA

Within San Francisco 's protected Presidio area, Baker Beach offers easy access to some of the city's best views. From the mile-long shore, visitors will enjoy panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Lands End , the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate Bridge . Head to the beach to sunbathe on the clean golden sand (keep in mind that the northern end is clothing-optional), or bring bait and tackle for a day of fishing. Baker Beach's position beneath towering serpentine cliffs also makes the shore a prime spot for hiking, so be sure to save time for a trek on the California Coastal Trail, one of several trails in the Presidio. Although most of the city's top hotels are located in the downtown area, a few noteworthy lodging options sit within 5 miles of Baker Beach, including the sophisticated Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights .

Grace Bay Beach: Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands

Turks & Caicos

Grace Bay Beach , a 3-mile-long white sand beach in Turks and Caicos , is incredibly picturesque thanks to its lack of seaweed and rocks. Plus, its position by Grace Bay makes it a terrific option for water activities. Venture a mile offshore to look for parrot fish, reef sharks and more while snorkeling around the barrier reef. Or, stay close to shore to swim in the calm, shallow water. Travelers can enjoy additional water sports (think: paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing) in the surrounding Princess Alexandra National Park by renting equipment via local outfitter Big Blue Collective. Resorts at Grace Bay Beach are easy to find, so plan on staying at a property with direct beach access, such as Seven Stars Resort & Spa or Point Grace .

Anse Source d'Argent: La Digue, Seychelles

Anse Sous d'Argent beach with granite boulders and turquoise sea

Featuring massive rocks, soft white sand, clear blue water and lush tropical vegetation, Anse Source d'Argent is a feast for the eyes. It sits on the island of La Digue in the Seychelles , off the eastern coast of Africa. In either direction, you'll notice gigantic granite boulders perfectly positioned between the water and swaying palm trees. Follow the lead of countless filmmakers and photographers by capturing the beauty of this beach on camera before stretching out on the sand or dipping your toes in the calm water. Aim to arrive during low tide when the water is below your knees and more sand is exposed. Reaching the beach requires passing through L'Union Estate, a former coconut and vanilla plantation that charges an entrance fee of 100 Seychellois rupee (about $7) per nonresident. Lodging is limited on La Digue, so consider taking the ferry from the larger island of Mahé, where the highly regarded Four Seasons Resort Seychelles is located.

South Beach: Miami Beach, Florida

High angle view of world famous South Beach at Miami Ocean drive with beach guard house and blue ocean, Florida, USA. Drone high view of the lonely idyllic beach in Miami at the southern spot of South Beach. Aerial view of this iconic spot in south Florida.

This tropical district on Florida's Atlantic Coast is world-renowned for its glamourous clientele, vibrant nightlife and powdery white sand. Although it is technically part of the greater Miami Beach area, South Beach is set apart by its Art Deco architecture evident in everything from the beachfront lifeguard towers to the high-rise buildings along the famed Ocean Drive . Lummus Park – equipped with sand volleyball courts, children's playgrounds and restroom facilities – flanks the crystalline shores. Situated on the northernmost corner of the park, The Betsy South Beach hotel offers luxury accommodations just a few blocks from the Lincoln Road pedestrian mall , where travelers will find opportunities for top-notch shopping, dining and people-watching.

Carmel Beach: Carmel, California

Sand beach by the Pacific Ocean coastline in Carmel California near Monterey

This laid-back beach town nestled along California's Central Coast harbors a dog-friendly swath of sand lined with trails and perfect for a beach fire. Carmel Beach is also known for its strong swell patterns ideal for surfing – but not so much for swimming, as riptides are common. Visitors who venture inland are treated to a charming village lined with boutiques, eateries and European-style architecture, plus a vibrant artist colony showcasing an array of work from local painters, sculptors and artisans. The historic La Playa Carmel hotel is located within walking distance to both the beach and the downtown district.

Clearwater Beach: Florida

Clearwater beach with beautiful white sand in Florida

Families flock to this beautiful coastline – located on a barrier island about 25 miles west of Tampa – for its plethora of aquatic activities, waterfront restaurants and spacious sunbathing spots on sugar-white sands. Must-see attractions like the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and dolphin watching cruises keep travelers of all ages entertained for days on end. No matter how you choose to spend your time in Clearwater Beach , make sure you end the day by watching a picture-perfect sunset at Pier 60 . Beach parking can be a pesky (and pricey) problem that a resort with direct beach access – such as the SandPearl Resort – can help guests avoid (although resort and parking fees apply).
