Why Choose Alaskan Discovery RV Tours?

We limit our caravans to 20 rigs which allows us to make your tour a dream vacation. Our groups form friendship bonds that last a lifetime and we are known for seeing and doing much more than most other caravans as we travel throughout Alaska. Because everything is planned in advance, you know what to expect and so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the sights, adventures and friendships caravan travel brings. Plus, we truly do have more fun than anyone else!

Please Compare

While we believe our tours are the best, you should look around to find the caravan company that best suits your interests and needs.   We are not the most expensive nor the cheapest, but the best with what we offer and the tours we visit.  When you compare us and what we provide; places we visit and tours we take you will see a big difference between us and all other caravans to Alaska.  Most other Caravans have one time hired Wagonmasters and round-trip itineraries.  They lack the experience in Alaska and count going home as part of the tour to make the trips seem longer and more worthwhile.

Meet our past customers at our Florida rally and hear directly from them how wonderful and educational our Caravans to Alaska are.  Our photo section goes back 3 years and covers all tours each summer.  Visit them to see where we go and what we do in photo album style.

Alaska RV Trip: Our Experiences

Embarking on an Alaska RV road trip is an adventure like no other. In this guide, we’ll share our best 14-day Alaska RV itinerary, drawn from our extensive experiences.

Having navigated Alaska’s scenic routes twice in a rented RV and once on a grand 9-month journey from the Lower 48 through Canada via Alaska Highway in our own camper truck, we’re seasoned in the highs and lows of RV life. From unexpected RV repairs to breathtaking vistas, we’ve seen it all.

In this article, Chris and I assume you rent an RV in Alaska, primarily starting in Anchorage . However, beginning in Fairbanks is an excellent alternative for those with better flight connections.

While we have a separate piece on traversing the Alaska Highway, here, we concentrate on the joys and practicalities of an Alaska RV adventure, beginning with a flight into the heart of this wild, stunning state.

Our 14-day Alaskan RV guide takes you through each day, showcasing the must-see destinations and captivating attractions and our handpicked selection of the finest RV campsites to enhance your adventure.

To prepare you fully, our concluding chapter provides an in-depth breakdown of expenses, from rental fees to campsite costs, tailored with the latest 2024 pricing information.

Quick Overview of Alaska RV Itinerary for 14 Days with a Map

Our 14-day Alaska RV itinerary is planned for an enriching camper experience, featuring 13 overnight stays and covering about 1,700 miles across Alaska’s stunning landscapes. To give you a visual guide, we have mapped out the approximate route on Google Maps , available below for reference.

In the following sections, we detail each day’s journey, highlighting the route and our favorite RV campsites.

Importance of Planning Your Alaska RV Trip

Before setting out on your Alaskan adventure, it’s crucial to be well-prepared. We highly recommend checking out our comprehensive packing list for an Alaskan road trip , complete with a handy free PDF checklist. This resource will ensure you don’t miss any essentials for your journey.

Additionally, our article on planning a trip to Alaska offers valuable insights and tips, guiding you through the process of organizing a successful and enjoyable trip.

Planning is paramount for an unforgettable Alaska RV itinerary. Here’s why:

Renting an RV for an Alaska Road Trip

With RV travel in Alaska becoming increasingly popular, early booking is essential. Based on our experiences, we highly recommend reserving your camper several months in advance. Both Anchorage and Fairbanks offer rental options.

We’ve rented an RV from ABC Motorhome Rentals twice and can vouch for their excellent service and reliable vehicles. Timely booking avoids last-minute hassles and ensures a smooth start to your adventure.

While we always provide honest insights, we haven’t personally used these other well-known Alaska RV rental companies, so we can’t offer our own experiences with them:

  • Great Alaskan Holidays Motorhome & Camper Van Rentals
  • River Wild Alaska Campervan Rentals
  • Cruise America
  • Alaska Family Motorhome
  • GoNorth Alaska

Pro Tip: Before booking your RV, carefully review the contract and insurance details. Ensure you understand what is included in the price to avoid any surprises or additional costs.

Booking Campgrounds

Advance campground booking is crucial. With spots filling up quickly, especially in peak seasons, it’s important to secure your overnight locations early. We provide a curated list of our favorite campgrounds in each location, many of which we’ve visited more than once.

Our adventures have taught us the importance of safety. We do not recommend boondocking (dispersed camping) in Alaska. On our travels, we encountered howling wolves in Canada and bears in Alaska next to our campsites. These experiences underscore the unpredictability of wild camping.

It’s not just about finding a spot; it’s about safety, legality, and environmental responsibility. Designated campgrounds offer a secure, hassle-free experience, allowing you to fully enjoy Alaska’s wilderness without the stress of finding a safe place to park.

Booking Activities

For an optimal experience on your Alaska RV trip, we recommend booking any organized guided tours and paid attractions well in advance. Alaska’s popularity means that finding availability for top-quality tours during your stay can be challenging if not planned ahead.

Bear-watching tours , whale-viewing cruises , or scenic flights over Denali , whatever you want to experience, you should book it ahead.

Rest assured, the tours we suggest below are based on our own experiences. We’ve personally participated in and paid for each of these trips, ensuring unbiased recommendations.

Additionally, all photos featured in this article were taken by us during our various journeys across Alaska, offering you a genuine glimpse of what to expect.

What is the best time for an Alaska RV Trip?

The best time for an Alaska RV trip is typically from mid-May to the end of August. This period aligns with the operational season of most RV campgrounds in Alaska, which generally opens in mid-May and closes by the end of the first week of September.

It’s also crucial to be well-prepared for the varied Alaskan climate and activities. We’ve compiled a detailed list of what to pack for a trip to Alaska , including essentials for different activities. This list will help ensure you have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable RV adventure in Alaska.

Day 1 Alaska RV Itinerary: Start Your Journey in Anchorage

  • Overnight: Anchorage
  • Driving Distance: 0

Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, is the perfect starting point for your RV adventure. Here, you’ll find a blend of urban comforts and rugged wilderness. Before hitting the road, explore the city’s attractions, like the Anchorage Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center .

Check out our Anchorage itinerary to see our recommendations for dining and activities.

Stock up on supplies and familiarize yourself with your rented RV. Here, you can stock up on food, snacks, water, and beverages for your trip. Take advantage of Anchorage’s relatively lower prices, as essentials tend to be more expensive in smaller towns.

This city is the ideal place to get acclimated, gather supplies, and begin your Alaskan adventure with everything you need. Anchorage also offers a chance to adjust to the Alaskan climate and time zone.

Anchorage RV Campground

We recommend staying one night in an Anchorage RV campground to settle in. Two campgrounds we’ve had great experiences with are Anchorage Ship Creek RV Park , conveniently located near the city center, and Golden Nugget RV Park . These spots offer comfort and accessibility, allowing you to start your journey refreshed and well-prepared.

Day 2 Alaska RV Itinerary: Anchorage to Homer Road Trip

  • Driving Distance: 225 miles
  • Driving Time: 5 hours without stops, or 6 – 7 hours with some scenic stops
  • Overnight: Homer

Anchorage to Homer Scenic Drive

Begin your road trip post-breakfast, embarking on a lengthy yet visually stunning drive. Remember to fill your RV’s tank early. Typically, the drive from Anchorage to Homer takes around 5 hours without stops. However, the route’s beauty usually extends our journey to about 7-8 hours, thanks to several picturesque stops perfect for photo opportunities.

Key Stops with Approximate Time Needed:

  • Potter Marsh Bird Sanctuary: 15-30 minutes, free entry.
  • Beluga Point: 5-10 minutes, no fee.
  • Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center : 60-90 minutes, with fees of $20 per adult and $16 per youth (5-17 years), free for children under 4.
  • Portage Glacier and Portage Valley: 15 minutes, free entry. Accessible via a short detour, this glacier is a marvel of nature.

Afternoon in Homer

Homer holds a special place in our hearts as a top destination in Alaska. Even a week seems too short to fully immerse in its unique ambiance and the array of attractions it offers. A leisurely afternoon strolling along Homer Spit is a must, where charming souvenir shops and artisan galleries await.

Don’t miss the chance to savor a beer at the famed Salty Dawg Saloon and add your dollar to its famous wall.

Pro Tip : For more ideas and to see our favorite experiences, be sure to check out our article on the best things to do in Homer . It will help you decide and choose activities that suit you most for your next day in Homer.

Smiling, Chris drinks an Alaskan beer in Salty Dwang Saloon with thousands of paper dollars on the walls.

Homer RV Parks

We suggest staying 2 nights in Homer. Our top pick for camping in Homer is the Homer Spit Campground , a place we’ve enjoyed multiple times for its stunning beachside location with breathtaking views of mountains and glaciers. Although it’s an open, windy area without trees, its Katchemak Bay beauty is unparalleled.

If the popular Homer Spit Campground is fully booked, consider Anchor River State Recreation Area , located 20 miles before Homer. It’s an excellent spot for watching bald eagles, moose, and marine wildlife.

There are five campgrounds in the Anchor River State Recreation Area: Halibut Campground , Coho Campground , Silverking Campground , Slidehole Campground , and Steelhead Campground .

Other noteworthy options along Anchor Point Road include Anchor River Campground and Kyllonen’s RV Park.

Day 3 Alaska RV Itinerary: Exploring Homer

Choosing activities for a day in Homer can be tough due to the abundance of options. While it’s unlikely to experience everything in a single day, rest assured that whatever you choose will be memorable. And don’t worry, like many travelers, including ourselves, you’ll likely find yourself drawn back to Alaska’s unique charm and beauty for another visit.

In Homer, how you spend your day hinges on your preferences and budget. The picturesque Homer Spit, stretching 4.5 miles, is perfect for leisurely walks while observing bald eagles and marine life. The town’s galleries and harbor offer cultural and scenic delights.

Homer wooden cafes and galleries.

Halibut Fishing

A top activity is a halibut fishing trip , providing both an adventure and a fresh catch for meals. We recommend a morning fishing trip for halibut (take a half-day trip), followed by an afternoon of cooking and enjoying your fresh catch. This not only adds a unique, hands-on experience to your trip but also lets you savor the local flavors while soaking in Homer’s scenic beauty. Don’t forget to purchase your Alaska fishing license online.

You have several companies with which you can go on a fishing trip. Chris caught halibuts with a local company, Rainbow Tours , which has been serving the communities of Kachemak Bay since 1982. And that’s why we recommend it.

Bear Viewing

If you are a bear enthusiast, there are day tours to Katmai and Lake Clark , accessible by plane or boat. These trips, detailed in our article “ The Best Bear Viewing Tours from Homer ,” offer unique experiences, albeit at a higher cost. Plane trips cost about $995+ per person. Advanced booking is a must. Alternatively, a boat trip to Lake Clark can save around $300 per person. Boat trips start from Anchor Point.

Pro Tip : Consider Brooks Falls Bear Experience or this Bear-Viewing Day Trip .

Other Activities

For more budget-friendly activities, consider kayaking tours or wildlife tours by boat in Kachemak Bay, allowing for a more affordable yet still thrilling experience in Homer’s natural beauty.

Day 4 Alaska RV Itinerary: Homer to Seward Road Trip

  • Driving Distance: 175 miles
  • Driving Time: 4 hours without stops or 6 hours with some scenic stops

Scenic Drive from Homer to Seward

Traveling from Homer to Seward, you’ll be treated to stunning coastal views. This route is a showcase of Alaska’s natural beauty. Enhancing your journey from Homer to Seward, consider these picturesque stops:

Afternoon in Seward

Seward, the gateway to Kenai National Park, offers a range of attractions catering to different budgets. After your RV journey, consider a relaxing walk in Seward Harbor. Visit the Old Alaska Railway Depot and the Seward Museum.

A more adventurous option is visiting Exit Glacier, the area’s most renowned glacier. Here, you’ll find several trails of varying difficulty, offering fantastic views. While two trails are easy, one is strenuous for those seeking a physical challenge. These options provide a great way to experience Seward’s natural beauty after a long drive.

  • Exit Glacier Nature Trail : This easy, 1-mile round trip trail offers a leisurely walk with views of the glacier and the surrounding forest.
  • Edge of the Glacier Trail : A moderate 2-mile round trip hike leading you closer to the face of the glacier.
  • Harding Icefield Trail : A challenging, 8-mile round trip trail, it offers stunning views of the icefield. You must have 6-8 hours for this hike, so starting it in the morning is better. You can also consider the Harding Icefield Trail Guided Hiking Tour .

Dusk settles over Seward Harbor, Alaska, with the Safari Lodge overlooking a marina filled with boats, set against a stunning backdrop of snow-capped mountains reflecting the fading light.

Seward’s Best:

  • Seward Harbor : Ideal for a leisurely stroll and enjoying local seafood. Consider this affordable Self-Guided Audio Tour , which will help you enjoy Seward and its main attractions.
  • Kenai Fjords National Park : Renowned for its glaciers and marine wildlife.
  • Exit Glacier : A must-visit for its accessibility and impressive ice views.

Seward RV Campground

We suggest booking two nights in Seward. The best experiences we have with Seward Waterfront Campground.

If it’s booked, check out Nash Bayfront Campground , Stoney Creek RV Park , Moose Pass Campground , or KOA Seward .

Day 5 Alaska RV Itinerary: Exploring Kenai Fjords National Park

For a day in Seward, consider activities that align with your interests, travel style, and budget. Whether it’s exploring the natural wonders of Kenai Fjords National Park, embarking on a wildlife cruise in Resurrection Bay , or enjoying a leisurely stroll in Seward Harbor, there’s something for everyone. Remember to balance adventure with relaxation to make the most of your Seward experience.

Exploring Kenai National Park is best done through a wildlife cruise . This experience offers not only views of fjords and glaciers but also opportunities to observe marine wildlife.

Seward is renowned as one of Alaska’s prime whale-watching spots . Even for budget-conscious travelers, this attraction is worth considering. A 4-hour tour in Resurrection Bay can unveil the natural wonders of the area, making it a highlight of your Seward visit.

Here are the top tours in Seward to consider for your visit.

Day 6 Alaska RV Itinerary: Seward to Palmer

  • Driving Distance: 185 miles
  • Driving Time: 4 hours without stops or 6 hours with some stops
  • Overnight: Palmer

Scenic Drive to Independence Mine State Historical Park

As you’ll be retracing the same highway to reach Palmer—a common occurrence in Alaska, where road options are limited—it’s advisable to focus on the drive itself for a quicker journey. This approach will allow you to efficiently cover the familiar route and dedicate more time to exploring Palmer’s unique attractions.

Your day’s objective is to visit the Independence Mine near Palmer, a well-preserved gold mine and a highlight of Alaska’s mining heritage. Allocate 1 to 3 hours for the mine, immersing yourself in this historic site.

Surrounding the mine are scenic hiking trails and stunning views of Hatcher Pass . However, be aware that Hatcher Pass is not navigable by RV, so focus your exploration on the mine area and nearby trails. This visit offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and outdoor adventure.

Independence Mine and surrounding buildings at Hatcher Pass, Alaska, set against the lush green of a mountain valley.

Afternoon in Palmer

Palmer is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes, including the nearby Matanuska Glacier and the Chugach and Talkeetna Mountains. It’s also known as the “Garden City” due to its rich agricultural heritage, particularly famous for producing giant cabbages. The town’s vibrant arts and culture scene, along with its diverse wildlife and warm community, add to its charm.

Palmer hosts the Alaska State Fair, one of the largest annual events in the state, attracting visitors for its agricultural exhibits, thrilling rides, live performances, and culinary delights.

Exploring the Musk Ox Farm in Palmer is one of our top recommendations. This unique attraction offers a 45-minute tour that provides an intimate look at these extraordinary creatures. To ensure your spot, we advise booking the tour in advance .

The farm is open from 10 am to 6 pm, so planning your day to fit this window will enhance your Palmer experience. It’s a fascinating opportunity to learn about and observe musk oxen, an integral part of Alaska’s wildlife and culture.

Palmer RV Park

We suggest booking one night in Palmer, or it’s area. The best campgrounds near Palmer are Mt. View R.V. Park and The Springer RV and Campground .

Check out also Matanuska River Park, Big Bear RV Park , or Fox Run Lodge & RV Campground .

Day 7 Alaska RV Itinerary: Palmer to Valdez

  • Driving Distance: 260 miles
  • Driving Time: 5 hours without stops or 6 – 8 hours with some scenic stops
  • Overnight: Valdez

Traveling along the scenic Glenn Highway towards Valdez, you’re in for a visually stunning journey. Take your time and savor the breathtaking landscapes. A highlight of this route is the Matanuska Glacier Viewing Overlook, a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.

Matanuska Glacier

Should you decide to venture onto the glacier, it’s an adventurous addition to your itinerary, though it may mean a later arrival in Valdez. We found hiking the Matanuska Glacier to be an exhilarating experience and highly recommend it. Remember to book this popular tour in advance due to its easy accessibility.

The journey to the glacier begins at Mile 102 on the Glenn Highway Scenic Byway, where you’ll turn onto South Glacier Park Road. The road’s rustic nature warrants careful driving. After crossing a charming bridge about a mile down, you’ll reach the privately operated Matanuska Glacier Park Resort.

The Glacier Park Lodge here marks the starting point of your thrilling glacier adventure. The hike is approximately 2 hours, so allocate about 3 hours for this entire experience, as first, you will drive to the glacier base with your tour.

Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site

For budget-conscious travelers, a great alternative is stopping at the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site . While direct access to the glacier isn’t available here, it offers one of the best vantage points for viewing it.

This site allows you to appreciate the glacier’s majesty without the cost of a guided tour, making it a practical option for those looking to enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty while managing expenses.

Afternoon in Valdez

Valdez, acclaimed as one of Alaska’s most picturesque ports, offers a blend of tranquil and adventurous experiences. Spend an afternoon wandering around the harbor, observing fishermen return with their catch.

Relax in a cafe or restaurant with stunning views of the sea and mountains, embracing the peaceful ambiance. Additionally, consider exploring the area on your own or join one of the organized tours we suggest for the following day.

How to spend a day in Valdez? Here are our top tour recommendations to choose from:

Kayaking Tour

Based on our personal experiences, we highly recommend a kayak trip in Valdez, especially with Anadyr Adventures. This particular tour stands out as one of the best glacier kayaking experiences in Alaska . Our adventure with them was memorable, offering close encounters with the stunning Alaskan scenery.

For a deeper insight into our experience and to view more photos from the trip, please refer to our detailed review of kayaking with Anadyr Adventures . This tour is a must-try for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Alaska fully.

If you haven’t embarked on a sea cruise in Seward, Valdez offers a fantastic alternative with its proximity to some of Alaska’s most stunning and expansive glaciers, like the renowned Columbia Glacier. Opting for the 6-Hour Columbia Glacier Cruise in Valdez, you’ll have the opportunity to see an array of wildlife, including otters, seals, whales, and sea otters.

This cruise not only lets you witness the dramatic retreat of Columbia Glacier but also the beauty of the ice in the bay. Additionally, you’ll enjoy cruising along Prince William Sound’s shoreline, adorned with cascading waterfalls.

The Columbia Glacier Cruise includes a light lunch with soup, a bagel, cream cheese, and cookies, complemented by complimentary beverages like coffee, tea, lemonade, and water. This experience blends natural beauty, wildlife observation, and comfortable amenities, making it a memorable part of your Alaska journey.

Day 9 Alaska RV Itinerary: Scenic Drive to Chena Hot Springs

  • Driving Distance: 410 miles
  • Driving Time: 8 hours without stops or 9-10 hours with some scenic stops
  • Overnight: Chena Hot Springs

On this day of your Alaska RV itinerary, you’ll embark on the most demanding yet rewarding drive via Richardson Highway, Alaska’s oldest highway. It’s essential that you’re well-rested from your time in Valdez, as you’ll be journeying 410 miles into the heart of Alaska, a route that takes about 8 hours of driving without stops.

With necessary breaks for lunch, refueling, and stretching, plan for approximately 10 hours on the road. We suggest you go on this trip in the morning, at least around 8 am.

We recommend taking the Richardson Highway for this leg of the trip. This route is not only fully paved and camper-friendly but also incredibly scenic, offering stunning views of Alaska’s wilderness.

Your destination for the day is Chena Hot Springs , a serene resort nestled deep in the Alaskan forest. This magical location is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate after a long day’s drive, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and comfort.

Key stops along Richardson Highway

As you travel along the Richardson Highway, there are several key stops that offer a glimpse into the diverse landscapes and unique towns of Alaska. You need 10 – 30 minutes for each stop to stretch your legs; the North Pole may be longer.

  • Glennallen : This town serves as a gateway to the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, with the famous Kennecott Copper Mine and McCarthy Town , offers breathtaking views and a chance to experience Alaska’s rugged wilderness. We skipped Wrangell-St. Elias in this RV itinerary due to its challenging gravel roads, which are not suitable for most rental RVs. Rental companies have restrictions against driving on such roads.
  • Tok Cut-off Highway : This scenic route diverges from the Richardson Highway and leads to Tok, often considered the “Sled Dog Capital of Alaska.”
  • Delta Junction : This area marks the official end of the Alaska Highway and is rich in history.
  • North Pole Alaska : A charming town with a Christmas-themed allure, known for its festive decorations and unique attractions like the Santa Claus House . It’s open daily : 10 am – 6 pm. If you arrive later – leave this attraction for the following day on your way to Fairbanks.

Afternoon Soaking in Chena Hot Springs

After the long drive, rejuvenation at Chena Hot Springs is a delightful reward. The springs operate from 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., offering flexibility for late arrivals.

Even if you reach in the late afternoon, there’s still plenty of time to unwind in the therapeutic waters. Daily pass is $20 per adult. You can book your pass online or after arriving.

Chena Hot Springs provides the perfect setting to relax and restore, ensuring that your body and mind are well-rested for the next day’s adventures. This relaxation experience is an essential part of your visit, allowing you to enjoy the natural warmth and serenity of the Alaskan wilderness.

Chena Hot Springs Camping & RV’s

Book one night in Chena. Booking your spot at Chena Hot Springs Camping well ahead of time is crucial due to its limited capacity of only 20 spots. In case it’s fully booked for your desired dates, a great alternative is the Chena River State Recreation Area .

This area offers three developed campgrounds for a comfortable stay: Rosehip Campground at milepost 27 on Chena Hot Springs Road, Tors Trail Campground at milepost 39, and Red Squirrel Campground and Picnic Area at milepost 43. Each campground provides a unique experience of Alaska’s natural beauty, ensuring a memorable stay in the Chena area.

Day 10 Alaska RV Itinerary: Exploring Fairbanks

  • Driving Distance: 75 miles
  • Driving Time: 2 hours
  • Overnight: Fairbanks

Choosing what to explore in Fairbanks and its vicinity in a single day can be challenging, given the abundance of attractions.

While we have detailed a comprehensive 3-day Fairbanks itinerary and listed 25 top things to do in the Fairbanks area , your limited time means focusing on the highlights.

Our itinerary pinpoints our personal favorite spots and attractions, the ones that truly capture the essence of Alaska’s Last Frontier and leave you yearning to return for more.

Key Highlights in Fairbanks for Your Alaska RV Trip

Below are some of our favorite attractions you can see in one day.

  • Pioneer Park . This historical theme park offers a glimpse into Alaska’s past with various attractions and museums, perfect for a family-friendly experience.
  • The Museum of the North . Located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, this museum showcases the state’s natural and cultural history through fascinating exhibits.
  • Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center . It is a great starting point to learn about Alaska’s indigenous cultures and the region’s history, with informative displays and local art.
  • Riverboat Discovery Cruise . Experience Fairbanks from the water on this popular cruise, providing unique landscape views and insight into the area’s history and ecology.

You have only one night in Fairbanks. We suggest booking your spot ahead. We had a problem with finding a place without reservation. Check out Fairbanks / Chena River KOA , River’s Edge Resort RV Park , or Pioneer Park RV Parking (dry camping only, no hookups).

Day 11 Alaska RV Itinerary: Denali National Park

  • Driving Distance: 125 miles
  • Driving Time: 2.5 hours without stops or 4-5 hours with some scenic stops along the way
  • Overnight: Denali National Park

Your journey along Parks Highway is set to be another visually stunning Alaskan experience. The drive without stops should take about 2.5 hours, but there are two noteworthy stops along the way:

  • Nenana . This hidden gem is worth a stop. Allocate at least an hour to explore and walk around this charming town, capturing the essence of Alaska’s small-town vibe.
  • Healy and the Replica of Magic Bus 142 . Famous for its association with “Into the Wild,” Healy offers a quick 30-minute stop to see the iconic Magic Bus 142 replica. It’s an interesting spot for a brief visit and a photo opportunity.

While it’s tempting to spend more time in these locations, today’s primary goal is reaching Denali National Park , the crown jewel of Alaska’s national parks. Therefore, we suggest these stops as short breaks for leg stretching and photography, keeping you on schedule for your arrival in Denali.

Afternoon Activities

Denali National Park offers enough wonders to keep you captivated for up to a week without feeling repetitive. While we’ve extensively covered this in our article about “ 3 Days in Denali ” and the “ 23 Most Interesting Attractions in Denali “. Check them out to choose what suits your interests, needs, and budget. For a 2-day visit, here are our top recommendations.

  • Begin your exploration of Denali at the Visitor Center , where you can immerse yourself in the Denali exhibit, a perfect introduction to the park’s wonders. It’s also a good idea to check out the ranger-led programs scheduled during your stay for additional insights and experiences.
  • A visit to the Sled Dog Kennels for a demonstration is a must. It’s not only educational but also a unique aspect of Denali’s culture and history.

A musher in sunglasses and a helmet guides a team of sled dogs pulling a wheeled sled down a gravel path. On the right, a crowd of onlookers with cameras and smartphones captures the moment. The lush Alaskan forest surrounds the scene, enhancing the authentic experience of a sled dog demonstration.

  • For hiking in Denali , start with the easier trails near the Visitor Center. We recommend the Taiga Trail, McKinley Station Trail, or Horseshoe Lake Trail, each offering its own scenic beauty and a manageable challenge.
  • If time permits, consider a scenic drive to the Savage River area, located at Mile 15 on Denali Park Road. This spot marks the furthest point you can drive your own vehicle. For more in-depth information on navigating Denali Park Road and the use of park buses, our article on how to visit Denali.

These activities offer a balanced first day in Denali, combining education, recreation, and the awe-inspiring natural beauty of the park.

Denali RV Parks

For a thorough exploration of Denali National Park, we highly recommend a two-night stay. Regarding National Park Service-run campgrounds, you have two primary options: Riley Creek Campground and Savage River Campground .

Both of these campgrounds require reservations well in advance due to their popularity and limited availability. To assist with your planning and to gain detailed insights into each campground, refer to our comprehensive article on Denali campgrounds .

In our separate article about the best lodging options in Denali , we pointed to campgrounds outside the park.

In short, we can recommend Denali Rainbow Village RV Park and Denali RV Park and Motel in Healy .

Day 12 Alaska RV Itinerary: Exploring Denali National Park

Narrated bus tour.

On your second day in Denali, a great start is the Tundra Wilderness Tour . Remember, booking this tour several months in advance is essential due to its popularity. The tour lasts approximately 5.5 hours round-trip, including stops, and takes you to the scenic Murie Cabin near the East Fork River, around Mile 43. This trip is perfect for wildlife watching in Denali .

For this journey, packing water, snacks, comfortable walking shoes, and layered clothing is advisable to ensure your comfort throughout the day.

If you’re looking for a shorter excursion, the Denali Natural History Tour is an excellent alternative. This tour covers up to Mile 17 of the park, offering a condensed yet enriching experience of Denali’s history and landscapes.

A colossal bulk moose was hidden between trees, which we spotted during the narrated tour bus in Denali.

Hiking or Scenic Flight

In the afternoon, consider hiking around the Savage River area. For guidance on the best trails, refer to our guide detailing our favorite hikes in Denali . Alternatively, you could spend a relaxing afternoon in the charming village of Denali, browsing through souvenir shops and enjoying local eateries.

If your budget permits, another exceptional option is a scenic flight over Denali . These flights, available with or without a glacier landing, offer breathtaking aerial views of the landscape. Choose this Peak Sightseeing by Plane or Helicopter Flight with a Glacier Landing .

Our experience with this Denali flight was extraordinary, ranking it as one of the best excursions in Alaska. You can embark on this adventure either from Denali or the following day from Talkeetna. We booked exactly this Flight Tour with Glacier Landing .

Since these flights are heavily weather-dependent, we recommend booking them early in your itinerary. In case of cancellation due to bad weather, most operators offer a full refund or the possibility to reschedule. This flexibility ensures that you can enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience without any hassle.

A bright red bush plane equipped with skis stands on a vast snowy field with dramatic Denali rocky mountains and ice formations in the background. The stark contrast of the plane's color against the white snow and rugged peaks emphasizes the remote and wild landscape of Alaska.

Day 13 Alaska RV Itinerary: Exploring Talkeetna

  • Driving Distance: 155 miles
  • Driving Time: approx 3 hours without stops or 4 hours with some scenic stops
  • Overnight: Talkeetna or Anchorage

As you approach the penultimate day of your Alaska RV trip, choosing where to stay overnight should be based on your departure time from Anchorage and the RV return schedule for the next day. Allocate sufficient time for these activities to avoid any rush.

The drive to Talkeetna is less than three hours along a scenic Parks Highway. While there may be tempting stops along the way, we recommend heading straight to Talkeetna.

A brief pause can be made 25 miles past Cantwell to see the unique, abandoned igloo-shaped hotel structure . Since it’s on private property, your stop here would be just a quick photo opportunity of this unusual and deserted building. This brief detour adds an interesting element to your journey, capturing a quirky piece of Alaska’s roadside architecture.

An abandoned, graffiti-covered building shaped like a large igloo stands beside a dilapidated gas station sign that reads 'IGLOO.' The scene is set in a desolate area with overgrown vegetation, under a cloudy sky.

Exploring Talkeetna

Check out our best things to do in Talkeetna to choose attractions that suit your needs and budget.

In Talkeetna, beyond the unforgettable scenic flight with a glacier landing , here are our top highlights:

  • Strolling Through Historic Downtown . Immerse yourself in the charm of Talkeetna by wandering its historic downtown.
  • Visiting the Talkeetna Historical Society Museum . This museum is a treasure trove of local history, culture, and Denali expeditions.
  • Exploring Local Galleries . Talkeetna’s vibrant art scene is showcased in its galleries. These spaces highlight the work of local artists, offering a glimpse into the region’s creative spirit.
  • Tasting Birch Syrup at Kahiltna Birchworks . Visiting Kahiltna Birchworks allows you to sample and learn about this unique Alaskan birch syrup delicacy.
  • Sampling Alaskan Brews at Denali Brewing Company . A stop at this renowned brewery offers the chance to taste some of Alaska’s finest craft beers.

Talkeetna RV Campgrounds

From Talkeetna to Anchorage, you have 115 miles and about two and a half hours of driving. So, plan your stay accordingly, depending on your flight schedule.

We have had a great experience with Talkeetna Camper Park in Talkeetna, and we can highly recommend it.

We also stayed at Eagle River Campground in Chugach State Park, near Anchorage. It’s a great solution if you have to return your RV to Anchorage the next day in the morning hours.

Day 14 Alaska RV Itinerary: Return to Anchorage

  • Driving Distance: 115 miles
  • Driving Time: approx 2.5 hours without stops

On the final day of your exhilarating 14-day Alaskan RV adventure, align your schedule with your departure. Dedicate a moment to meticulously tidy up your camper before its return—attention to detail can prevent leaving behind cherished belongings, as was the case with Chris’s favored sunglasses once forgotten in a rental car.

Ensure you explore every nook and cranny, from the cupboards to the compartments. If your flight schedule permits, seize the opportunity to immerse yourself in downtown Anchorage one last time. It’s the perfect chance to select a quintessential Alaskan keepsake to commemorate your journey.

Alternatively, for those seeking to make the most of every minute, our Anchorage itinerary offers a wealth of options to enjoy your day to the fullest.

Additionally, Anchorage, as a hub of activity, provides numerous options for exploration. We suggest checking out our guide on day trips from Anchorage to discover more of what this vibrant city and its surroundings have to offer.

What if you have 10 days for your Alaska RV Trip?

For a 10-day RV trip in Alaska, adapting your schedule to fit the shorter timeframe is essential. You can draw inspiration from our 10-day Alaska itinerary designed for regular car travel. This itinerary outlines an excellent plan, pinpointing key attractions and activities.

To tailor it for an RV trip, simply replace the hotel stays with the recommended campsites from our RV itinerary. This approach will allow you to enjoy Alaska’s natural beauty while accommodating the unique aspects of RV travel.

Alaska RV Trip Cost

Our article “ How Much Does It Cost to Visit Alaska ,” has already detailed the expenses for a 10-day itinerary with a regular car and hotel stay.

But what would be the estimated 14-day Alaska RV trip cost for two adults? Assuming RV rental in Anchorage?

For a 14-day Alaska RV trip for two adults, here’s a more tailored cost breakdown (no plane tickets):

Alaska RV Rental Costs

Renting an RV during peak season, especially around a popular holiday period like July 1 to 14, can be costly. With an average nightly rate of $330 before taxes, the cost for 13 nights comes to about $4,290 . Plus, we will drive approximately 1700 miles during our Alaska RV trip. The average rental cost is $0.29 – $0.39 per mile. I used a higher rate for my calculations, so it is $663 per 1700 miles. Additional fees are State Tax, approx. $240 , Rental Tax, approx. $146

So, our Alaska RV trip’s total RV rental cost is approximately $ 5,339 . I assumed renting and returning to Anchorage.

Accommodation (Camping Fees)

The average cost of camping for the 2024 season is around $50 per night. For 13 nights, this totals approximately $ 650 . It will be less if you book NPS campgrounds and state parks campgrounds.

Over the course of our 14-day Alaska RV itinerary, you’ll cover approximately 1,700 miles. Based on this distance, the estimated gasoline cost for the trip would be around $750. This calculation is a rough estimate, and the actual cost may vary depending on the fuel efficiency of your RV, your RV size, and the fluctuating gas prices.

I assumed the cost for commercial campgrounds. Booking NPS campsites or Alaska state parks campgrounds well in advance will be much cheaper.

Food and Beverages

Assuming most meals are prepared in the RV with occasional dining out, a daily budget of $100 seems reasonable. This amounts to around $1,400 for the entire trip.

Attractions and Excursions

The cost of additional attractions and excursions during a 14-day Alaska RV trip can vary widely, ranging from around $500 to as much as $3,000 per person. This variability depends largely on the specific activities and attractions you choose to explore.

A realistic budget for such trips and attractions, based on our recommendations, could be about $1,000 per person. This estimate includes experiences like the Denali bus tour, fishing in Homer, a wildlife cruise in Seward, kayaking in Valdez, and visiting Chena Hot Springs.

Therefore, for two people, you might expect to allocate approximately $2,000 for these additional activities.

Souvenirs and Tips

It’s worth adding to your budget also some amount for tips and souvenirs, at least $200 per person, so it’s $400.

Total Alaska RV Trip Cost

Hence, for a comprehensive 14-day Alaska RV adventure covering about 1,700 miles, the total estimated cost for two adults is approximately $10,540 . This estimate includes accommodation, RV rental, food, additional attractions, and excursions, as well as fuel costs.

It’s important to remember that these figures are approximate, and actual expenses can vary based on individual choices, seasonal variations, and changes in prices.

We suggest budgeting an additional 15% on top of the estimated $10,540 for unforeseen expenses during your 14-day Alaska RV trip is advisable. This fund helps cover unexpected costs, ensuring a smoother and more stress-free travel experience.

RV Trip To Alaska – The Ultimate Planning Guide (2022 Update)

February 9, 2022 January 31, 2022 | Christopher Harvey

Last Updated on February 9, 2022 by Chris and Lindsay

Note: As of this update, travel to Alaska has been restricted due to border control between Canada and the US. It is still possible to plan your RV trip to Alaska. But you should be sure that your plans coincide with what is legally permissible at this point. Be sure to check with each government to determine the exact policies. However, as of January 2022 it appears that you may cross to/from the US/Canadian border with proof of vaccination.

An RV trip to Alaska is one of the best travel adventures you can have in life! From its rugged and raw landscapes to the vast wildlife and the many opportunities to explore the great outdoors, Alaska has much to offer by way of adventure!

For this, and many other reasons, Alaska’s nickname as the “Last Frontier” is quite suitable. But this feeling of wilderness and solitude will ultimately help you appreciate your time in Alaska all the more.

Our Guide to RVing to Alaska is tailored to those of you who own your own RV and will be making the drive to Alaska from the Lower 48 US states. Whether you live in a van , trailer or motorhome, there is so much to see and do in driving the Alaska Highway both to and from Alaska.

But if you plan to fly into Fairbanks or Anchorage and rent an RV there , you are not alone. This Guide will also help you plan your trip too.

Regardless of your experience, planning an RV trip to Alaska can seem overwhelming. Most of the state is nearly two thousand miles from the closest border town in the Lower 48. You will cross an international border. And at times there will be vast stretches of highway where there are little to no signs of civilization.

Embrace this! And use our Guide to RVing to Alaska to help you plan the safest, most comfortable journey as you embark on your drive to Alaska!

Ultimate Guide To Planning Your RV Trip To Alaska

Alaska has only been a US state since 1959. As such, the land is still raw and rugged and ripe for exploration! In fact, there is still a waning generation of original homesteaders who can share stories of their adventures to carve out a small piece of the state for themselves.

People plan RV trips to Alaska for many reasons. So depending on your reasons, this Guide to RVing Alaska will help you determine the best time, driving itinerary and things to see and do.

RV trip to Alaska in Homer

Best Time to Drive to Alaska

If you dream of making an RV trip to Alaska then there is no bad time to go! But as you can imagine, there are definitely better times of the year to visit Alaska.

Because of its northern latitude, Alaska experiences longer periods of daylight and darkness at different times of the year. For this reason, most people take their RV trip to Alaska during the summer months. During this time the sunlight is ample (you can experience 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle when summer begins).

Wildlife is incredibly active during the summer months. And you can expect very mild temperatures for the duration of your journey.

We recommend that you plan your RV trip to Alaska for the time between June and August . This will be the busiest time of year for all travelers.

But Alaska is so large that you will hardly worry about the crowds anywhere you visit during this time. And if you are worried about the crowds, you can hedge your trip on either side of the summer.

Temperatures are still low and warming during the spring. And you are very likely to see snow almost everywhere you travel. In September the daylight hours begin to drastically drop, as do temperatures.

But if you enjoy winter sports and/or want to see the Northern Lights then September is the absolute earliest that you should plan to drive to Alaska. Just know that different highway rules and safety guidelines operate beginning in October.

You will want to be aware of the requirements for snow tires/chains as well as road closures and limited opportunities for fuel and food.

Length of Trip

Alaska is beautiful at any time of year. But due to the distance and time required to drive your RV to Alaska, many people become daunted by the journey.

It’s true, if you only have a two-week vacation in which to complete your drive to Alaska you are not going to fully experience the beauty of the state.

But if two weeks is ALL you have and you have always wanted to drive to Alaska, then use our Guide to RVing to Alaska to make the most of what you have!

In all reality, we would suggest no fewer than 6 weeks for a return trip to/from Alaska. Much of the time will be spent driving. And that’s not a bad thing.

You’re going to see some amazing things and find yourself in moments of profound silence looking out over inspiring landscapes along the way!

But 6 weeks in the minimum we suggest you commit to RV to Alaska, from border to border. Of course, even your starting/final border crossing locations impact the length of your journey.

Long story short: Visit Alaska anyway you can! And stay for as long as you can! Regardless of your circumstances, Alaska has a lot to offer. And seeing the Last Frontier by RV is the best way to go.

Driving Your RV To Alaska

Surprisingly, there are a handful of ways that you can reach Alaska to RV through the Last Frontier. We recommend that you drive your own RV.

And most of the information in our Guide to RVing Alaska is tailored to you driving your own RV from the Lower 48.

However, you also have the option to put your RV on a ferry in several locations, thus bypassing many miles of wear and tear on your RV. Or, alternatively, you could plan to fly to Alaska and rent an RV .

This Guide to RVing Alaska is based upon our experience driving our own truck camper to/from Alaska. But since your circumstances may vary, we did want to make sure that you were aware of other options.

A map of the drive to Alaska

The Cassiar Highway Or Alaska Highway?

When it comes to driving to Alaska in your RV there is really only one way in and one way out. At some point, you will find yourself driving the famous Alaska Highway (also known as the “Alcan Highway”).

The Alaska Highway begins in Dawson Creek, British Columbia and traverses 1,390 miles before terminating in Fairbanks, Alaska. There are a few ways to reach Dawson Creek, depending on your point of origin. We’ll get into these below.

But once you hop on the Alaska Highway it is a straight shot to Alaska.

So What Is The Difference Between The Alaska Highway and Cassiar Highway?

If you are like us, as you plan your RV trip to Alaska you have likely come across mention of the Cassiar Highway and the Alaska Highway. The Alaska Highway begins in the northern part of British Columbia and winds its way through the Yukon Territory and into Alaska.

This is the longest and most common route into Alaska from Canada.

The Cassiar Highway is a shorter stretch of highway that branches off of the Alaska Highway near Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. This highway is more direct as it cuts along the western portion of British Columbia and is absorbed into the more numerous roadways that lead back into the United States in the Seattle area.

If you are in a hurry, the Cassiar Highway is the quickest way to/from Alaska. It will cut a few hours from your drive. Plus we can’t say enough about how much you will appreciate a quick side trip to the “friendliest ghost town” of Hyder .

But in our suggested itinerary, we recommend that you take BOTH the Cassiar and Alaska Highways in your RV adventure to Alaska. This route will allow you to visit the incredible beauty of the Canadian Rockies. But it will also bring you along the more isolated Cassiar Highway.

Where you plan to start your drive to Alaska depends on where you are currently located. But for our Alaska road trip itinerary recommendations , we suggest you enter Canada in Montana or Idaho and return through Washington.

We will describe the circular route in more detail in the Itinerary section below.

Additionally, if you do not desire to drive to Alaska there is an option to travel by ferry. Of course, this is a more expensive option. Most ferry options begin in Washington and will take you through the many fjords and canals of the Inside Passage and terminate in Haines, Alaska.

So if you can afford the fares, only have pets that can endure long periods of time between restroom breaks and want to skip half of the driving, a ferry is a great option. We would recommend adding an Alaska cruise to your bucket list for some other time if you want to see the beauty of the Inside Passage.

Truthfully, driving to Alaska is the best part of owning an RV.

Of course, a third option does exist if you want to RV in Alaska but either do not own an RV or do not want to transport your RV to Alaska.

You can opt to rent an RV in Alaska .

In this case, you are looking at higher prices as you must not only account for the RV rental itself, but also for the transportation to/from Alaska. If you do plan to rent an RV in Alaska, be sure to familiarize yourself with how to operate the RV.

Additionally, there are many places (like the Dalton Highway ) where RV rentals are typically not permitted. Be aware of the terms and conditions of your rental agreement.

NOTE: Due to current travel restrictions to Alaska, renting an RV in Alaska is quite possibly the best opportunity for you to be able to fly directly into Alaska and then enjoy RVing around the Last Frontier. We recommend that you look into RV rentals available through Outdoorsy or campervan rentals through Escape Campervans .

Suggested Itinerary

We suggest that you give yourself no less than 6 weeks for your RV trip to Alaska. You could spend half of that time just driving up and back. Additionally, we have created several Alaska itineraries that take you to the same key locations.

The only exception is if you want to (and are prepared for) drive the Dalton Highway. This journey in and of itself requires a bit more planning and preparation.

Plan to visit the following locations:

  • Alaska Highway
  • Denali National Park
  • Palmer/Anchorage
  • Kenai Peninsula (Turnagain Arm, Anchor Point, Homer & Seward )

Our driving itineraries also assume that you will begin your drive in the Lower 48 in the northwestern part of the country. Add additional time to your trip according to your starting location.

We also base our itineraries on “border-to-border” starting/ending locations. So you will see that we guide you from a US/Canada crossing on your way to Alaska back to a Canada/US crossing on your return from Alaska.

Basic Alaska Road Trip Itinerary

Your Alaska road trip will vary depending on how much time you have, where you want to go and what you want to see and do.

Fishermen in Homer

But we suggest that you build your itinerary from the following basic recommendations:

Canadian National Parks (7-10 Days)

Alaska Highway (5-7 Days)

* Dalton Highway (4-5 Days)

Interior Alaska (5-7 Days)

Kenai Peninsula (7-10 Days)

Valdez (3-4 Days)

Haines (5-7 Days)

Hyder (4-5 Days)

To US Border (3-4 Days)

* The Dalton Highway is not for everyone. Check out the story of our drive to the end of the world before you plan to drive the Dalton Highway.

RV Camping In Alaska

The best campgrounds in Alaska are not necessarily campgrounds. Alaska is one of the few places in North America where it is acceptable (and legal) to camp virtually anywhere.

This means that nearly anywhere can offer spectacular views and camping.

Camping in Alaska at Homer SPit

If you are more inclined to reserve campsites in advance, there are plenty of options in each town or village. We’ll provide a few recommendations below.

But do not worry if your itinerary or plans change. You should never worry about finding a safe place to camp in Alaska.

In fact, in 7 weeks in Alaska, we only paid for camping for 7 total days!

We recommend that you consider the following options as the best campgrounds in Alaska:

  • Dalton Highway – Camp just before Deadhorse next to the river that leads to the Arctic Ocean (FREE)
  • Homer Spit – Camp on the beachfront and stack rocks to make your own personal fire pit on the beach ($24/night)
  • Seward – Join the masses and camp along Resurrection Bay in any of the public campgrounds along the beach ($20/night)
  • Valdez – Camp at the foot of Valdez Glacier just outside of town (FREE)
  • Haines – Follow the Lutak Inlet toward Chilkoot Lake and camp at one of the pull-offs along the glacial-blue water (FREE)
  • Hyder – Drive through the ghost town toward Salmon Glacier and park along a pull-off next to the river (FREE)

Budget For RV Trip To Alaska

Your budget for an RV trip to Alaska will vary as much as any budget. Depending on where you want to go, what you want to do and how comfortable you want to be, your budget could vary greatly.

Additionally, if you are traveling with children or other additional people then some of your expenses will also increase.

For instance, you could easily spend:

$50 – $75 per night for a full hookup campground

$100 – $250 per person for daily tours of local areas

$300 – $500 per person on fishing trips in a half dozen places

$50+ per person for daily meals in restaurants

For those of us who don’t have that kind of money sitting around, there are more affordable ways to thoroughly enjoy Alaska without breaking the bank. Here are some guidelines for how we spent less than $1,000 per week on our drive to Alaska.

We based our budget on 2 adults with our truck camper averaging around 10.5 mpg.

  • $25 / day daily meal budget ($175 / wk)
  • $12 / day miscellaneous ($100 / wk)
  • $25 / day spending ($175 / wk)
  • $25 / day camping ($175 / wk)
  • * $4.50 per gallon x 7,000 miles / ___ mpg = ($3,000 total, @10.5 mpg)

* Only twice did we pay $4.50 per gallon. Once in Coldfoot, Alaska on the Dalton Highway on our way to Deadhorse, where we also paid over $4.50 per gallon.

Everywhere else fuel was well below $4.50. But fuel charges are always subject to change at the time of your trip. We suggest you over budget on fuel.

In total, we spent approximately $2,700, which included stretches of road where we averaged less than 10 mpg.

So for 8 weeks, you could safely plan to spend approximately $8,000 in total:

  • Meals: $175 x 8 = $1,400
  • Spending: $175 x 8 = $1,400
  • Camping: $175 x 8 = $1,400
  • Miscellaneous: $100 x 8 = $800
  • Fuel: Total $3,000

We did not take part in high-cost tours or fishing trips. In fact, the only tour we purchased was the mandatory tour to visit the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay. Any other entrance fees or activities were paid out of our daily/weekly spending allocation.

Additionally, we only paid for a total of 14 nights of camping. Each night was under our $25 / night budget. So we saved over $1,000 in camping fees alone!

Top Destinations To RV In Alaska

You can only drive through a small percentage of Alaska. As the Last Frontier, Alaska is raw and rugged and mostly inaccessible by vehicle. So many great places are literally well off the beaten path.

However, these are the Top Destinations to RV in Alaska:

  • Fairbanks – The terminus of the Alaska Highway and a great place to begin. Spend a few days on your own or condense your visit with a quick city tour so you can get on your way to the rest of Alaska!
  • Deadhorse – If you are prepared to drive the Dalton Highway then Deadhorse will be a must on your list. At least let someone else drive you to visit the Arctic Circle !
  • Talkeetna – Situated just outside Denali National Park, Talkeetna is a classic artsy Alaskan town with great views of Mt. Denali (if you are at the right place and time!). This is one of the best places to catch a plane ride to explore the nearby glaciers !
  • Palmer – Take a tour at Williams Reindeer Farm and feed, pet and play with the Reindeer!

We call these next few the “Alaska finger towns” as each one is a down-and-back route stretching from the central “palm” of Alaska:

  • Homer – Drive out on the spit and enjoy the views of Kachemak Bay
  • Seward – Spend time exploring Resurrection Bay and all of the wildlife in the area. Be sure to visit Kenai Fjords National Park !
  • Valdez – Visit the old town destroyed by a tsunami in 1964 and then head out to Solomon Gulch to watch sea lions, otters, bald eagles and grizzly bears feast on salmon
  • Haines – Head toward Chilkoot Lake to look for momma grizzly bears teaching her cubs to hunt for salmon. Then take the ferry to the historic mining town of Skagway to pan for gold !
  • Hyder – Eat at “The Bus,” drive out to Salmon Glacier and stop to watch bears catch salmon in the river

Driving The Alaska Highway

The best part of driving your RV to Alaska is… well, driving your RV to Alaska! For most people, driving the Alaska Highway is near the top of their bucket lists.

This is important because the 1,390 miles of the Alaska Highway is technically the only way to drive into Alaska.

NOTE: It is possible to cut a few of those miles off by taking the Cassiar Highway in the south. Or, the more adventurous can add a few miles more by taking the “Top Of The World Highway” out of Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory and approaching Alaska from the north.

If you follow one of our suggested Itineraries, your journey to Alaska will actually begin when you cross the Canadian border (if you are not already in Canada!).

The Alaska Highway sign

At this point, we suggest you take a week to enjoy the Canadian National Parks of Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay.

Not only are these spectacular views of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. But also driving through these parks will put you within a 6 hour drive (~300 miles) of reaching Dawson Creek, British Columbia.

It is in Dawson Creek where the Alaska Highway begins. For the next 1,390 miles, you will pass through beautiful portions of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory, often meandering back and forth between the two.

You could spend only a handful of days and make the drive quickly (not recommended, by the way!). Or take up to a week or more to enjoy the scenery, wildlife and various points of interest along the way.

These are a few of our favorite places to stop along the Alaska Highway

  • Mile 0 Visitor Center (Dawson Creek) – Snap a photo of your vehicle in front of the famous Alaska Highway sign.
  • Mile 477 Liard River Hot Springs – A nice hot spring modernized with a boardwalk and changing rooms.
  • Mile 603 Entering the Yukon Territory
  • Mile 612 Watson Lake – Host of the famous “Sign Forest.” You could spend hours looking for the sign closest to your hometown. Or make a sign and leave it for someone else to find.
  • Mile 626 Cassiar Highway junction – Take this back from Alaska to enjoy a more rustic and less crowded drive back to the Lower 48
  • Mile 888 Whitehorse – Lots to see and do in Whitehorse, including loading up on fuel and food and dumping tanks if necessary
  • Mile 894 Junction for Dawson City – This will take you to the “Top of the World Highway” and bring you into Alaska from the north
  • Mile 1024 Kluane Lake turnout – Spend a few hours stretching your legs, cooking a meal or swimming in the lake. Very few opportunities to enjoy scenery like this along the Yukon Territory’s largest lake
  • Mile 1186 US Customs and Border Protection – You made it to Alaska! The station is open 24-hours a day so no rush to arrive.
  • Fairbanks is approximately 5 hours from the Alaska border. Follow the mountains on your left all the way into the city.

A great supplementary resource to our information is the Milepost . We used this in our planning for our trip!

Choosing the Right Company for Your Adventure

When selecting which company to go with, ensure you question several crucial aspects. The focus should be on ensuring that you have a safe and comfortable journey as you explore stunning Alaska destinations.

Evaluate how many days you'll need to pack up and move during the 63-day journey. With our caravan, you'll only move 22 times, offering a more relaxed pace. In contrast, other companies may require you to move 29 or more times, resulting in fewer days at each stop.

How do you choose which great trip to take? Let’s start with some of what makes each different.

More babies and much smaller (cuter), think baby bear, baby moose, baby otters, baby goats, baby eagles….

Historically (but not always) this is the dry season

Snow-capped mountains

Lots of daylight, even when it is not full daylight it will still be bright enough to see without a headlamp for the majority of your trip and will have full daylight for 20+ hrs most of your trip. That is more time to explore and do fun things

Celebrations-we will have a Summer Solstice Party and the 4th of July in Valdez

A bit less wildlife on the roads but we will still see plenty during the trip

It is a bit wetter but that also gets the berries to finish ripening up so we can pick them

Farmers' markets are loaded with fresh produce and homemade items

State Fair-an amazing experience

Northern Lights-seen every year so far

Fall colors in Denali and through the Northern Canadian Rockies

Moose have their antlers back on

We get asked a lot about bugs and which trip to avoid. We built our routes to avoid getting bitten as much as possible, that is why we go in different directions in Alaska for each of the trips. This allows us to avoid where the bugs are the heaviest, stay where the breezes are when they are out, and then visit the areas known for the swarms after they have ended.

Together, let’s explore the beauty of Alaska.

Our chosen destinations.

Homer for seven nights

Seward for six nights

Fairbanks for five nights

Valdez for 4 nights

Haines for four nights

Skagway for three nights

Talkeetna for 3 to 4 nights, depending on the tour

Cooper Landing for four nights

Palmer for 5 to 6 nights, depending on the tour

Tolsona/Glennallen for three nights

Denali for three nights

Getting Ready for Your Tour

When will i receive the detailed itinerary.

You will receive a pre-rally information packet approximately 90 days before the tour begins, which includes the detailed itinerary, a vehicle preparation checklist, travel tips, medical forms and the contact information for your WagonMasters.

How should I prepare my RV before the tour starts?

Make sure your vehicle(s) is in top condition before you leave home. Have in your possession the warranty packet and information that came with your motorhome, fifth-wheel, or travel trailer. Know the name of the dealer and location of the original purchase, factory telephone numbers, warranty numbers, as well as year, make, and model in order to get parts delivered quickly, if necessary. Use the Vehicle Preparation Checklist (provided in the pre-rally information packet) to assure your equipment is ready for the tour. Most people travel without ever having a breakdown. In fact, you will probably complete your tour and never have any kind of mechanical problem. Your Travel Ambassadors will do a basic vehicle inspection before the tour begins and advise you of any potential problems or recommended things to do to help preclude any damage to your vehicle.

Should I bring a tow vehicle?

On traveling caravans, we recommend a tow vehicle to maximize your freedom. Most caravans have free days to explore but ultimately, it is an individual preference to tow.

Do I need a passport?

Passports are required for Canada, Mexico and Overseas tours. Please note: Some USA tours require passports if they travel into Canada.

What documents do I need for Mexico and Overseas tours?

You are required to have a Travelers Visa, but we’ll take care of obtaining and paying for the visa once we receive a copy of your passport. We’ll send this information to you a few months before the tour begins.

Is extra vehicle insurance needed in Mexico?

Yes. You must have a Mexico Liability policy for each motorized vehicle and we’ll provide you with information regarding purchasing the liability policy.

Are pets welcome?

YES! We are a pet friendly company. However, it is your responsibility to care for your pet. During Polar Bear tours – you will be away from your pet 3 nights. Canadian Atlantic Province tours with an overnight ferry crossing – you will be away from your pet 1 night. There are pet accommodations available for those tours. Pet care fees are your responsibility. Canada and Mexico require proof of rabies vaccination.

Will I get to speak with my WagonMaster before we depart?

On caravans with less than 25 rigs, your WagonMaster will make an introductory call to each guest on the tour after you receive your customer packet. On all other caravans and rallies, you will be contacted by email which will include direct contact information for your WagonMaster.

Are flights included on Overseas tours?

No. Many of our guests enjoy arriving early or extending their trip once the Caravan is over, so we want to give you the freedom to do so. We’ve also found that guests prefer traveling on specific airlines, flying at certain times of the day or booking their flights with frequent traveler miles. We want to give you the ultimate freedom to fully maximize your vacation. Any in-country flights that are listed on the itinerary are included in the price of the tour.

While on Tour

Do you provide driving directions.

Before the tour begins, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive, up-to-date, field-researched Trip Log with turn-by-turn directions and popular landmarks.

Are gratuities included?

Tips for meals, bus drivers and special guides are included in the tour price. Customers should feel free to tip any service providers they feel go ‘the extra mile’. Gratuities are certainly welcome, but not required for your WagonMaster and TailGunner – they strive to provide exemplary service, above and beyond the call of duty during your entire tour.

Are ferry fees included?

Typically, ferry fees are included unless stated otherwise on the itinerary.

Can I get special meals for my dietary restrictions?

If you have special dietary needs, notify your WagonMaster before the tour begins. Some of the vendors we use will be able to accommodate and some do not have the ability to do so. Be prepared with your own food substitution for situations in which your special food need cannot be accommodated.

What are the physical demands of your tours?

To ensure you have a safe and enjoyable vacation, each tour has an Activity Rating, which is indicated in the tour information. Most tours include walking tours and guided excursions aboard buses, boats, trains, subways and planes. This scale will help you decide if you can participate in all activities included with each tour. Guests with mobility challenges and walking limitations may not be able to participate in all activities. Activity Ratings are intended to provide information for those who do not use mobility devices. If you require a mobility device, please be aware that guests are responsible for loading, unloading and securing their device on all excursions. Some of our tours prohibit the use of Scooters, which is indicated in the tour information.

Can I bring my mobility device?

Certain tours are not scooter or wheelchair accessible, which is indicated in the tour information. On tours where all mobility devices are allowed, guests relying on the aid of walkers, crutches or other mobility devices must travel with a companion capable of assisting. Guests with mobility challenges may not be able to actively participate in all activities included in the tour itinerary.

What amp service will be available at campgrounds?

We always strive to reserve as many 50 amp spaces as possible. However, some campgrounds will not have enough 50 amp spaces for everyone. At most campgrounds, 30/50 amp power is standard. Please note that some campgrounds in Alaska, Canada and Mexico may be more primitive than in the Lower 48. Be prepared to use limited power or dry camp on a few occasions.

How will I know where and when to meet for activities?

On most days, WagonMasters hold nightly travel meetings to brief you on the next day’s activity schedule. In addition, the WagonMasters will have a whiteboard in the front window of their RV that has the daily schedule and any changes that may have occurred.

How do I keep in touch with the WagonMasters and TailGunners?

We use family radios and cell phones. Your WagonMaster will explain the best means of communication for the next day’s travel at the nightly travel meeting.

Can I book optional activities on tour?

There may be opportunities in which you may want to enjoy side trips and optional tours that are not included in the price of the Caravan. Our WagonMasters & Tailgunners are available to assist you with suggestions of popular activities in the area to make the most of your vacation.

What if I have medical emergency or mechanical breakdown?

Our Travel Ambassadors are ready to help when a mechanical problem or medical emergency arises. However, if this prevents you from continuing the tour, you may receive a credit toward a future tour less any non-refundable expenses incurred by Fantasy RV Tours on your behalf.

How to plan a memorable first-time alaska cruise.

The remarkable scenery of Glacier Bay is a highlight on many Alaskan cruise itineraries.

Embark on a journey through Alaska's pristine wilderness aboard a cruise ship, where you can experience the awe-inspiring nature of the last American frontier in comfort.

As you glide past icy fjords and into secluded bays, seize the chance to witness magnificent glaciers up close, and keep your eyes peeled for the mighty bears, whales and eagles that call this rugged landscape home.

However, don't make the mistake of thinking you’ll have peace and quiet. Remote it may be, but Alaska is one of the world’s most popular cruise destinations.

Ports such as Skagway can accommodate up to four large cruise ships at once. Smaller ports can easily become overwhelmed with visitors, while popular shore excursions sell out well in advance. As such, there’s a lot to understand about Alaska cruises before booking.

Cruise Lines In Alaska

Most major cruise lines sail in Alaska, ranging from large, modern ships full of amenities, down to smaller, older ships with more outside space and a relaxed vibe. Expedition cruises on even smaller ships focus more on wildlife and geology.

When picking a line and ship, consider your choice of cabin carefully. Although inside cabins offer a cheaper deal, the value of a balcony cabin shouldn't be underestimated. On scenic cruising days, you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape—and potentially wildlife—without jostling for position.

Alaska Cruise Itineraries Explained

There are two main types of Alaskan cruise itinerary: the Inside Passage roundtrip, and a one-way Gulf voyage. Each route offers unique opportunities to see both glaciers and wildlife, with specifics depending on the season.

Samsung Issues Critical Update For Millions Of Galaxy Users

How to watch real martha baby reindeer interview with piers morgan, a ukrainian sport plane drone just flew 800 miles into russia to blow up an oil refinery.

Alaska is a popular cruise destination in the summer.

Seven-night Inside Passage cruises typically depart from hubs like Seattle or Vancouver, calling at popular stops like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Many feature a scenic cruising tour of the breathtaking Glacier Bay National Park.

For example, this 7-night itinerary on Norwegian Encore including all those highlights is available between April and October in both 2024 and 2025.

For those seeking deeper exploration, one-way Gulf voyages include the highlights of the Inside Passage route, but also venture closer to the Arctic Circle. Typically, such itineraries start or end at Whittier or Seward near Anchorage.

This 7-night itinerary from Celebrity Cruises includes port calls at Sitka, the historic Icy Strait Point, and scenic cruising of the Hubbard Glacier on the way from Vancouver to Seward.

Some cruise lines combine Gulf voyages with curated tours before or after the cruise for a comprehensive Alaska experience. Such tour packages include famous rail journeys, visits to Denali National Park, and optional overnight stays in Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Longer Alaskan cruise itineraries, especially those on smaller ships or expedition lines, may include remote locales like Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands.

Port Excursions In Alaska

Exploring ashore on guided excursions is a highlight of any Alaskan cruise. Each port offers unique opportunities to engage with the natural environment and local culture, but the popularity of cruising in the region means advance booking is essential.

Some of the most popular tours may fill up just days after they go on sale, in some cases months before the actual cruise. Consider independent tour options, but read the terms and conditions carefully and check for reviews from previous cruisers.

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular cruise excursion from Juneau on Alaska cruises.

Alaskan capital Juneau is renowned for its glacier tours and wildlife viewing opportunities. The hike through backcountry to the Mendenhall glacier requires a good level of physical fitness, while whale watching boat trips are just as popular.

The historic Skagway train tour along the Klondike route in a vintage coach, featuring stunning vistas and rich gold rush era history, is a must-do.

Cultural tours in Ketchikan often include visits to the Saxman Native Village, where totem poles and traditional dance performances offer insight into the local Tlingit culture.

When To Cruise Alaska

Alaska is not a year-round cruising spot, and the season is shorter than most leading cruise destinations. Alaska’s cruising season ranges from late April to late September.

April : Expect relatively dry days, though not completely devoid of light showers and fog. Bears are only just emerging from their winter slumber so sightings are unlikely, but you may see eagles and humpback whales.

May : With more ship options, relatively dry weather, long hours of daylight, and good value fares, May is a popular time to cruise Alaska before the peak. Wildlife, including migrating shorebirds, whales, and bears, are more visible.

June : Mild temperatures and long daylight hours—up to 19 per day—provide optimal cruising conditions. Enjoy vibrant greenery and more wildlife sightings, but prepare for the possibility of mosquitoes (especially on trips inland) and variable weather.

July : July brings mild temperatures, often reaching the 70s, but it's also the start of the wetter period. Expect long hours of daylight ideal for wildlife sightings, including salmon runs and bear activity. However, peak cruise season means high fares, busier ships, and busier ports. Local produce starts to feature heavily on menus shoreside.

Juneau, Alaska, has a spectacular natural setting and is a gateway to many exciting outdoor ... [+] experiences.

August : Expect rain, with daytime temperatures in the low to mid-60s and nights cooling to the upper 40s, and ample wildlife viewing opportunities, as bears and bald eagles are active near salmon streams. Fares, along with the number of daylight hours, fall later in the month.

September : Expect cooler temperatures and frequent rain, which may risk the success of outdoor excursions. Despite less demand, wildlife viewing remains good with bears still active near salmon streams and whales still present in coastal waters. September also offers a chance to see the northern lights .

What To Pack For Alaska Cruises

Packing smart for an Alaska cruise means being prepared for both adventure in the great outdoors and the comforts of cruise life.

An Alaskan journey demands attire for cooler climates. Essentials include a fleece jacket, thermal socks, and a warm hat to combat the cold, along with sweaters and thermal underwear for effective layering. Waterproof gear such as a reliable rain jacket and waterproof pants are crucial for unexpected rain or snow showers.

You should also consider waterproof bags to protect your electronics and important documents during shore excursions.

Sun protection is vital due to the deceptive Alaskan sun. High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat are necessary to guard against UV rays and snow glare.

Footwear should include waterproof hiking boots for rugged terrain and slip-proof sandals for the deck, accompanied by thermal or wool socks for additional warmth.

For shore excursions, a collapsible backpack and a thermal water bottle will keep you organized and hydrated, while binoculars can greatly enhance wildlife tours. A simple first aid kit, sea-sickness bands, and insect repellent are other wise packing choices.
