A tour to Mount Fuji is not a great option only for those in a rush. With 3 weeks in Japan, I initially thought of visiting Hakone and Mt.Fuji for one night, but the transportation with all the luggage was quite a hassle, and so decided to go on a day trip instead.

I am very glad I did. The day tour packed so much, and I saw more than I probably would have seen on my own in 2 days. Plus, I didn’t have to deal with transportation and a big backpack.

But which tour to choose when there are so many? I’ve listed below the ones I consider to be the best , based on the value they offer and travelers’ reviews, along with the tour I personally took and recommend. Read on and take your pick!

The BEST Mount Fuji Tour from Tokyo

The Mount Fuji, Hakone, Lake Ashi Cruise Bullet Train Day Trip is the tour I chose to visit the famous volcano from Tokyo. This is the most popular tour on Viator , so I figured it was a safe bet – and it was!

This full-day excursion, which lasts close to 10 to 12 hours, started at a meeting point where we were divided into groups. Then we took a scenic drive by deluxe coach to Mount Fuji.

We were so lucky to visit on a clear, sunny day! In fact, it’s quite rare to see Mount Fuji as it’s oven covered by the clouds. Your chances of seeing the mountain are particularly low between April and August, and we visited on a rainy week in May – but somehow we got lucky. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you too!

The first stop on our tour was Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station , which offers spectacular views of the surrounding lakes. Our guide Joe told us about the geology of the place beforehand, and then we had an hour of free time to walk around on our own and take pictures.

Then we stopped for lunch. I definitely recommend adding lunch when buying the tour (or adding it on the day of the tour by paying on-site for it). This Japanese-style meal – a hot pot plus a bento selection of cold bites – was one of the highlights of the day and one of the best meals I’ve ever got on a tour .

Next up: Lake Ashi . Lake Ashi is the most famous lake in Hakone, towered by both Mount Fuji and Mount Komagatake. We enjoyed a relaxing cruise across the lake , taking in the sights and, of course, I had to snap a lot of pictures! You know me 🙂

This comprehensive Mt. Fuji day trip also includes aerial tram tickets to reach the summit of Mt. Komagatake , from where the views of Hakone National Park, Lake Ashi, and Mt. Fuji are unparalleled.

If you’re feeling up to it, you can venture on one of the mountain top’s trails for a little stroll before getting back down and back to Tokyo.

While the tour is jam-packed, you’ll be given a detailed itinerary upfront so you know what to expect and how much time you’ll have for each activity, ensuring a smooth sailing day. Your guide will then bring you to the train station, where you’ll catch the evening bullet train back to Tokyo. 

This is an attraction in itself, as the super-fast bullet trains of Japan are famous all around the world.

Our guide Joe was exceptional ! One of the best guides I’ve ever had for a tour in the world. He was funny and entertained us with fun facts about Japan’s culture and language during the bus rides, and was happy to help in any way. Once we made it back to Tokyo, he even helped people get back to their accommodation – if you’ve been to Tokyo, you know the metro/train system can be quite confusing.

👉 THE VERDICT : The tour we went on is the most popular for a reason and I highly recommend it . It was the perfect introduction to the region without the hassle of moving by public transportation. We had a great time and thought the tour was well-priced for what it was (remember you’re in Japan).

This Mount Fuji Climb tour is a great option to hike on the volcano’s trail. It caters to groups of up to 9 people and includes a knowledgeable guide to lead the way. 

You can certainly visit Mount Fuji from Tokyo on a day trip! My personal recommendation is to join the Mount Fuji Bullet Train Excursion which includes hassle-free transfers from the city (plus all the activities). 

It costs around 100-150 USD with a shared tour , and considerably more if you’re going on a private Tokyo to Mt. Fuji tour .  

Mount Fuji is not only Japan’s tallest mountain, but one of the country’s icons worldwide, and quite an impressive sight to behold. I believe it’s very worth the trip!

My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.

This was our first trip with World Expeditions and also our first trip to Japan. We were very surprised that upon our arrival our (non Japanese) guide announced that he had not done this trip before - or ever lead a group of this size (12)! Although we were a seasoned group of travelers, most had never been to Japan. General disappointment with our guide was evident but we decided to push on. Most places we stayed were great and we really loved the Japanese culture and people we experienced. It would have been an incredible trip if we had a local guide that knew the culture and history. Our guide not only had different trip notes to us, but he had to use google to find his way around and answer most of our questions. His interest in the local Yakuza (Mafia) was outstanding, as were his drug addiction which became apparent much later in the tour. If it were not for the experience of our group, disaster & mishap could have occurred on several occasions. Upon our return we complained to World Expeditions in detail, but it seemed of little concern to them. We were given a 12% refund and told that the guide had been sacked. We will definitely return to Japan, but unfortunately would not recommend World Expeditions to anyone. We will certainly never travel with them again!

What a fun day with Motoyuki! We tried to see Mt Fuji from different vantage points including one of the beautiful lakes on the back of the 1000 yen bill. Too bad the rain made it a limited view. We had a price sake tasting and tour of company that has been around more than 300 years. Delicious and informative. Best sushi lunch ever at a place locals enjoy with conveyer belts! That tuna was like butter! Ended day with Mt Fuji Heritage museum which was very creative and was built as if you were hiking the stations of Mt Fuji and what panoramic view you would see. Moto was knowledgeable fun and approachable. He was also an excellent driver and designed a great itinerary for for we desired!

Everything You Should Know about Visiting Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain, standing at 3,776 metres. Still considered an active volcano, although it hasn’t erupted since 1707, it’s located 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo.

While Mount Fuji is a treacherous hike in itself, many people venture to the nearby cities of Fujiyoshida and Fujinomiya to see the beautiful landform. I did this. I went to Fujiyoshida and stayed there for the night. The weather wasn’t ideal in December for hiking, but it was still an amazing experience I’ll never forget.

Now, there are some things you need to be aware of before you visit Mount Fuji, like transport, the best viewpoints and some other insider tips, which I’ll give you in this guide. Let’s begin!

Best Time to Visit Mount Fuji

You can visit Mount Fuji at any time of the year when you’re not hiking. I will say that I found it to be particularly special during winter; seeing the snow covering the peak and the mist, which added an intimidating feeling to it, was incredible.

If you want to hike Mount Fuji, the hiking season runs between July and September. July and August are the peak months, so it will be busiest then. It’s not advised to climb outside these months because it gets extremely cold at the top, increasing the chances of accidents much more.

Pro-tip : Consider visiting Mount Fuji during the off-season, especially if you’re not hiking. The cost of accommodation will be much lower than at other times of the year.

How to Get to Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is close to the Pacific Coast of Central Honshu, which is southwest of Tokyo . Before you visit Mount Fuji, you need to decide which city you want to base yourself. I would personally recommend Fujiyoshida. The city itself is extremely beautiful, and the views from the mountain are unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

For this post, I’m going to stick to transport to Fujiyoshida because that’s where I went. The easiest and cheapest way to get there from Tokyo is by taking a bus from Shinjuku Station to Mount Fuji Station in Fujiyoshida. The journey takes between 1 hour and 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the traffic conditions. Tickets cost between $14.10 and $15.19 based on the time you go.

You can also take the train to Fujiyoshida from Shinjuku Station, with a stopover at Otsuki Station, but this takes longer and is more expensive.

Pro-tip : Buy your bus tickets online beforehand to guarantee your seats.

Best Viewpoints for Seeing Mount Fuji

All around Fujiyoshida, you’ll find some great viewpoints to catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji. However, there are some that you can’t afford to miss.

When you touch down in Fujiyoshida, you should go straight to the city’s downtown area, Fuji Michi (Honcho Street), where you’ll get a full view of the mountain. Both sides of the street are usually lit with funky signs, adding a striking setting to the image. Just be careful when you’re down this way, though, because it is an open road, so traffic will be coming past.

In my opinion, the best viewpoint is the one at Chureito Pagoda at Arakura Sengen Shrine. You’ve probably seen photos of this one already, as it’s plastered all over the internet. This bright red pagoda was constructed as a peace memorial in 1963. To get there, you’ll have to take hundreds of steps to the top of a hill, but it will be all worth it when you see how good Mount Fuji looks in the distance.

Pro-tip : If you’re going to take on one of these viewpoints, I think it’s best to do so in the morning: fewer crowds and an unobstructed view; what more could you want?

Other Things to Do in Fujiyoshida

While Mount Fuji is clearly the highlight of Fujiyoshida, it’s not the only thing you can do in the city.

Lake Kawaguchi is only a short drive away from the city centre. It sits at the foothills of Mount Fuji and is a gorgeous place for a little walk when the weather is nice. Some people even camp there, and you’ll often find locals out with their fishing rods.

If you need a hit of adrenaline, well, then Fuji Q Highland should be on your radar. This amusement park is right in front of Mount Fuji itself. There are all kinds of rides you can jump on to release your inner child, from insane rollercoasters to spooky attractions like the Haunted Hospital.

Another brilliant experience at Fujiyoshida was the Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. It’s a cable car that brings people up to the well-known Kawaguchiko Tenjozan Park, which has a wonderful viewing platform at a whopping 1,075 meters. And yes, before you guess, you can see Mount Fuji from it.

There’s no better way to dive into the Japanese culture than by experiencing an onsen. One of the most revered of its type is the Fujiyama Onsen, which has indoor and outdoor baths where you can enjoy relaxing treatments that will make you feel like a brand new person following your adventures around Fujiyoshida.

Pro-tip : Hire a car for a day to see as many attractions in the area as possible.

Where to Eat in Fujiyoshida

Fujiyoshida may not be as big as Tokyo, but it sure does have its fair share of restaurants that are worthy of a splurge on some delicious Japanese cuisine.

If you try one thing in Fujiyoshida, you better make sure it’s the udon noodles at Miykai Udon. From the outside, this place may not look like anything special, but when you have your first mouthful of udon, you’ll understand what I mean: thick and chewy, just how I like them.

Since you’re in Japan, you’re pretty much guaranteed good sushi where you go, and Fujiyoshida is no exception. One restaurant I was mad about was this lovely little family-run spot called Sushi Yoshi. While I ordered a variety of bites here, the scallops were on another level; they had a light brininess to them with a delightful, sweet aftertaste.

Pro-tip : Anyone travelling on a budget should consider eating from 7-Eleven. Some of the microwavable meals there are delicious and very affordable.
