Your guide to Paris

While Paris' metro and RER trains are more designed to service commuters, they are still efficient and an excellent way to explore the city, which is sprawled so much that exploring every attraction on foot is impractical.

Buses in Paris are slower and much less efficient, owing to Paris' chaotic streets.

As in most European destinations, peak tourist season in Paris is in the summer. Beat the crowds by coming in spring or fall instead. If you want to rub shoulders with locals, August in particular is to be avoided, as there's a mass exodus out of the city at this time, with residents heading off on their own vacations. Christmas in Paris is magical, but is very popular, so prepare to pay more, and remember it will be cold and probably rainy.

Paris is the most cosmopolitan of cosmopolitan destinations, so pack things that will make you feel appropriately sophisticated. Along with your usual travel essentials, you're probably going to want:

  • Comfy (but chic) shoes: Exploring Paris on foot is a delight, and let's be honest, you're probably going to do a lot of walking around the shops too.
  • A sweater: Even in the summer months, there will usually be a chill in the air after dark. In winter, you'll need a fully-fledged thick coat too.
  • A notebook: Nothing gets the creative juices flowing like Paris. Sit in a café and feel like a member of the Euro intelligentsia as you write.

The Gobelins Factory

factory tours paris

The name “Gobelins” comes from Jehan Goblin, who settled in the 15th century in the banks of the Bièvre river to create dyeing workshop. Its activity became very well known in the Faubourg Saint-Marcel, then bought by the king to become “Crown’s Royal Factory of furniture and tapestries”. An original discovery of a very old French institution.

visite

HISTORY In 1602, Henri IV decided to develop the French factory to limit imports of products like carpets and tapestries, which the Royal Court was a big consumer. He rented buildings owned by Gobelin descendants tapestry and settled two Flemish to run it: Marc de Comans and François de la Planche.

In 1662, Colbert (Minister of Louis XIV) bought the buildings for the crown and decided to create the “Crown’s Royal Factory of furniture and tapestries”, where settled upholsterers but also painters, goldsmiths, engravers… Reserved for furnitures fot Royal Houses and diplomatic gifts, it will know a 30 years heyday, before being closed by Louis XIV who ruined the country with wars…

From the 18th century until today, the Gobelins continue to weave contemporary masterpieces, according to the origins of this old institution. Today, the Factory depends on the “Mobilier National” (National Furniture), which reinforced concrete headquarter located rue du Barbier Mets is a major construction of Perret brothers.

Photographie : Jean-Philippe Humbert

VISIT THE FACTORY

Today, the Manufacture Nationale des Gobelins still weaves tapestries to decorate public buildings. 3 days per week ( Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) you can discover the history of places and see the workshops through visits organized by tour guides. The gallery can also be visited freely during temporary exhibitions inside buildings.

During your visits, in addition to the discovery of weavers, do not miss the buildings and courses of the Factory . Some indeed date from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the house of the first director Charles le Brun, or the old chapel built in 1723.

What’s Included:

This  playful Paris chocolate tour  is a unique combination of  history and French sweet tastings  in the elegant district of Saint-Germain-des-Près. During this  two-hour stroll , your “Mary Poppins” guide will share  thrilling anecdotes  while your kids will need to find answers to (easy) riddles about the places you will be visiting for your yummy tastings.

Your starting point is by the  Saint Germain Church  where your kid-friendly guide will offer you a first tasting: a  chouquette . This French specialty, a baked and fluffy pastry, consists of small-sized dough sprinkled with pearl sugar…. simple but delicious!

You will then visit  a 200-year-old chocolate factory  that specializes  in high-quality   chocolates . Taste what Napoleon and Queen Marie-Antoinette savored, as they were loyal clients for this brand formed in 1779!

Let’s now visit the  paradise of   macarons.  This cookie made of almonds was born in Italy and traveled to France with the chef of Catherine de Medicis. Since then, this pastry has become one of the most famous French pastries in the world. You can find it in many flavors, but it always keeps its round form.

A Paris Chocolate Tour yummy and fun at the same time while visiting Saint-Germain des Prés

It’s toffee time! But not just any toffee. Get ready to  taste the award-winning best caramel in France . From there, head to Brittany and its mouth-watering specialty! Can you guess? It is of course a crepe, but not a basic crepe; it is a 100% organic crepe made in front of you! Even the chocolate and jams are homemade.

Your next boutique is one that dates back to 1830 and has kept its delicate recipe of “ calissons ”: a crushed mixture of candied melons and almonds from Provence placed on a sheet of unleavened bread and covered with a thin layer of royal frosting.

Time now to travel to Brittany and taste the “ kouign amann,” which means “butter cake” in Breton. The recipe becomes evident at your first bite. For Bretons, this dessert can come head-to-head with crêpes.

How about finishing this yummy tour a refreshing stop to savor the most famous of all the Parisian ice cream makers: Berthillon. While any ice cream is of course delicious, these famous scoops are so creamy and scrumptious, they are sure to delight your taste buds!

If the weather is too cold for ice cream, how about hot chocolate ? We know the best place to drink it in Paris!

And if you look more Paris chocolate tour, we also have a chocolate workshop, have a look at our Chocolate Workshop for kids !

Please note that our stops may vary depending on the days and hours of operation of the shops, but the number and variety of tastings are always respected to ensure the best possible experience.

Is this Paris Chocolate Tour fit for young kids?

This tour is for kids of all ages! Even though it offers the highest standards of sweet tastings, your children will absolutely love this tour!

I have nut or gluten allergies, may I join this yummy tour?

We will do our best to choose testing that are nut free and gluten free. However, be aware that there could be traces of nuts as all products are processed in the same workshop.

Private Paris Porcelain Tour

Of the five great centers of porcelain production in the Île de France (St. Cloud, Sèvres, Chantilly, Mennecy and Vincennes) only Sèvres survives, although it can be argued that Chantilly and Vincennes survive through Sèvres. This unique private Sèvres tour of Paris porcelain can take you to visit the Sèvres museum and factory, where you will see its historic collections, as well as witness actual contemporary production.

The Thousand Flower Vase at the Guimet Museum

In our private Sèvres tour, we can also visit some of the outstanding porcelain collections in Paris: the Dutoit and Tuck collections at the Petit Palais Museum, the Cognac-Jay Museum, the Calmann and Grandidier collections at the Guimet Museum, the Nissim de Camondo Museum and its affiliate, the Museum of Decorative Arts, as well as the Jacquemart André Museum.

If you wish to purchase porcelain in Paris or France, Paris Luxury Tours can research availability, locate candidates, e-mail photos to you prior to your arrival, and design a private tour that efficiently takes you see each of the choices. We have often been able to locate items sought by our clients prior to their arrival in France, so that they have been able to conclude their acquisitions during their trip, a free benefit derived from booking our tour.

Interested In Our Private Paris Porcelain Tour?

One of our recent clients was trying to find a pierced Paris Empire basket, and we found it for her in, of all places, Limoges. It was safely delivered to her home in New York painlessly, and at modest cost. We helped another client locate several pieces of late 18th century and early 19th century hard paste Sèvres coffee cups and saucers by taking him directly to the shop of the only specialist in that type of porcelain at the St. Ouen flea market.

“Shahin, Just a quick note to let you know how much we enjoyed the tour of the Loire Valley [Custom Loire Valley Day Tour from Paris of 2 chateaux and 1 wine estate]. Let me start by saying the best part of the trip was meeting you and listening and learning about the history of France and specifically Chenonceaux. Your comments and guidance throughout the day made the experience far more than just a sight-seeing trip. Lunch was great and so were Amboise and the wine tasting. I can’t thank you enough for putting this tour together for us, we will enjoy the memories for years to come. Merci beaucoup,”

Le Musée du Parfum Paris Fragonard

Perfume creators – noses with genius!

factory tours paris

An olfactory voyage around the world

Aside from their climate and geology, the world’s regions are characterized by their olfactory signature. Conveyed by a tree, flower or root, these fragrances are a voyage of the senses… The Musée du Parfum Fragonard in Paris offers visitors a genuine olfactory voyage of the five continents through 17 interactive maps created using the most emblematic aromatic plants. The voyage ends in Grasse, the world’s perfume capital and cradle of modern perfumery, where raw materials from the world over are used to formulate our perfume products.

The perfumer’s art of formulation

Perfumers undergo lengthy training and enrich their knowledge throughout their career. They must be able to recognize several thousand different scents, know how to combine them to enhance them and create an innovative perfume, and develop their own olfactory signature. A magician-come-artist-come-chemist, the perfumer, like a musician, creates harmonies of olfactory notes using the perfume organ. With passion and a great deal of patience –sometimes months and even years – the “master nose” gives life to our most beloved perfumes.

The Musée du Parfum Fragonard features an ancient perfume organ with over 200 different essences and an old notebook containing Fragonard perfume formulas. In comparison, you will also be able to see a modern-day perfumer’s office , with a computer, test strips and laboratory test samples!

MOLSHEIM EXPERIENCE

Molsheim is the home of the BUGATTI family, the birthplace of the brand and the modern headquarters of the company. Located in France in the heart of Alsace, Molsheim is where BUGATTI’s history of success began in 1909, when Ettore Bugatti bucked the trend and started producing cars that were small, light and easy to handle. This was when the brand’s values of excellence, courage and dedication were born — values which BUGATTI represents to this very day.

Ettore Bugatti was a perfectionist. He desired nothing but the best for his cars, his customers, his company and himself, following the maxim: “If comparable, it is no longer Bugatti”. Today, we are proud to continue the BUGATTI tradition in the place where it all began, here at Molsheim.

Bugatti image

ARRIVAL - HISTORIC GATE

The value of the BUGATTI brand does not only lie in its technical and stylistic finesse, but also in its tradition and rich heritage. This is why in 1998 it was a natural choice to revive the BUGATTI brand in Molsheim — the original location of Ettore’s legendary manufacture. Every BUGATTI customer journey begins at Molsheim, where visitors experience our founder’s spirit alongside the fascinating interplay of art, forme and technique..

Just like then, the Molsheim Experience follows a suspense-building sequence in which the best is saved for last.

Bugatti image

RECEPTION AND INTRODUCTION - CHÂTEAU ST. JEAN

Château St. Jean is the place where Ettore fittingly received his customers to celebrate their purchase in unique style. BUGATTI has restored the Château and revived this tradition, welcoming its guests with an exhibition of the brand’s history that includes invaluable artefacts and memorabilia. The middle floor lies on a central oval that is not completely joined to the exterior walls and thus appears to float, seeming to catapult everything into a new era.

Visitors dive into the lives of talented BUGATTI family members Carlo, Rembrandt, Ettore and Jean, who shaped and inspired the marque throughout the last century and up to this present day.

CLASSIC CARS AND VINTAGE TREASURES - REMISE NORD

The Remise Nord was built in 1853. Initially used for stables, it later served as a shelter for pilgrims of the Order of Malta on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Despite their very special aesthetic characteristics, these buildings meet their intended purpose and are functionally designed. “They are not just pure works of art, even if they give that appearance,” said architects who worked on their refurbishments.

Today, the Remise Nord is the home to some ground-breaking examples of the brand’s past, like the Type 35 – the most successful race car of all time – and the Type 51, which is considered the pinnacle of BUGATTI’s most celebrated race car design. At 6.4 meters in length, the Type 41 Royale Coupé de Ville Binder is one of just six Royales in existence, all of them highly luxurious and powered by a 12.8 liter in-line 8-cylinder engine. Sitting next to the Royale, the 1931 Type 56 is an electrically powered two-seater that Ettore designed and built to be easily driven on BUGATTI grounds.

Bugatti image

EXCLUSIVE TEA BREAK - ORANGERIE

The Orangerie is the only building that Ettore Bugatti added to the complex during his lifetime. Originally built to house tropical plants, the Orangerie was renovated for the 100th anniversary of the brand in 2009. The 1920s steel structure was carefully restored to keep up with the authenticity of other buildings in the initial section of the BUGATTI compound. The Orangerie is now a popular retreat area for visitors to relax following the adrenaline rush of a BUGATTI test drive.

Bugatti image

HANDMADE - THE ATELI ER

The factory, known as the Atelier, was added to the premises in the early 2000s. Created in the shape of BUGATTI’s signature feature, the macaron, it is the place where our craftspeople assemble each BUGATTI by hand. Every year, around 70 units of the Chiron variants, the Divo, the Centodieci and other models are produced to the highest quality.

While the Château and the remises represent the long tradition of the brand, the Atelier stands for modern-day technology and an innovative future. The view towards the Atelier and through the windows towards the south provides a contrasting feeling of spaciousness: open, luminous, and technical.

Bugatti image

PURE ADRENALINE - TEST DRIVE

Pierre Henry Raphanel, one of BUGATTI’s official test drivers, once said:

“I have never met anyone who was prepared for the rush of emotions a test drive in a BUGATTI unleashes. It is pure passion and adrenaline. Everyone who had seriously been considering buying a BUGATTI beforehand actually did so afterwards. I am merely the one introducing them to something they had probably never felt before in their life and that makes our hyper sports cars so unique: true BUGATTI passion!”

Bugatti image

CAR CONFIGURATION - REMISE SUD

The Remise Sud, built in 1788, is where future BUGATTI owners configure their ultimate vision. Assisted by one of our designers, each customer can tailor their future hyper sports car according to their preferences. Thanks to an endless range of customization options, they can choose from a huge variety of color and material combinations, unique design splits and individual emblems. A process which Hendrik Malinowski, Director of Sales and Operation, summarizes with the following words: “It is our highest goal to offer our customers the extraordinary: an unforgettable experience and a dream that BUGATTI will make a reality.”
